This chardonnay is rich and layered, with silky notes of peach, nectarine, ripe pear and vanilla. Aromas of lime zest, green apple and quinine are complicated by a subtle gingery nuance. Silky and lithe on the palate, with tangy acidity sharpening the flavors of fresh orchard and citrus fruits. Shows very good energy and lift on the finish, with the lime note echoing. — Josh Raynolds

A cross-Napa Valley blend, the 2012 Merlot is their largest cuvée (15,500 cases), and is composed of 85.2% Merlot blended with other Bordeaux varietals. Only 21% new oak is used, so the fruit component dominates. A dense plum/purple color is followed by notes of chocolate, berries, tobacco leaf, forest floor and mocha. Graphite, pencil shavings, violets, melted road tar, spices, blue/purplish fruit and lavender flesh out in the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon from La Jota. Aromatically striking and totally vivid in the glass, the 2011 stands out for its crystalline purity, finesse and vibrant finish. All the elements are in the right place. The tannins are firm yet also silky. This is a flat-out stunning wine from Chris Carpenter and La Jota.

The first vineyards at Domaine de Fontsainte, in the Corbières appellation, were planted by the Romans, and the original domaine was built around a thermal spring, which was later named for the local, twelfth-century patron saint, Saint Siméon; hence Fontsainte—the saint’s fount. Yves Laboucarié’s family has been making wine here since the seventeenth century, and he has taken the torch and is carrying it expertly. This sustainably farmed blend is boldly flavored red, bottled unfiltered, with an outrageous blaze of dark berries, black currants, and is a super value that is sure to delight any lover of French wine.

Chateau Graville Lacoste Blanc ‘14 $16.99 This fabulous white is a true benchmark and a prime example of what excellent Bordeaux Blanc is all about. Graville Lacoste is from 45-year-old vines that are farmed sustainably and is bottled unfiltered after aging in stainless steel. This wine is the result of a lot of care, soul and meticulous attention to detail. Everything in the vineyards is kept in absolutely perfect condition, and the wines showcase the results of this care.

Domaine D’aupilhac Lou Maset Rouge ‘13 $12.99
Grenache 40%, Cinsault 40%, Carignan 10%, Syrah 5%, Alicante Boucher 5%. Three generations of Fadats have farmed the large, eighteenhectare lieu-dit known as Aupilhac, in the village of Montpeyroux, across the river Hérault from Daumas Gassac and Grange des Pères. The soils are rich in prehistoric oyster fossils, which lend an incredible length and minerality to the wines. Domaine d’Aupilhac’s “Lou Maset” blend finds a terrific balance of ripe fruit and silky tannins, power and grace. When aged, it achieves a complexity rarely found in wines sold for many times the price, while its wildness and intensity makes it equally appealing young. It doesn’t hurt that it’s also certified organic.
Domaine Dupeuble Beaujolais Blanc ‘14 $16.99
At the far Southern end of Burgundy’s Beaujolais region is a tiny patch of sandy vineyard land owned by the Dupeuble family. This terroir isn’t well suited for the red Gamay grape that prefers granite soils, but it turns out that Chardonnay from this vineyard is STELLAR! This is a charming un-oaked Chardonnay with a crisp and vibrant character. There isn’t much of this terrific White Burgundy, so grab it while it’s here!

Domaine Catherine le Goeuil Cotes du Rhone $16.99
The hilltop village of Cairanne on the left bank of the southern Rhône between Orange and Vaison-laRomaine is a picture of Provençal fantasy where fields of lavender paint the landscape purple and proud plain trees line the marketplace in the center of town. Cairanne belongs to the Côtes du Rhône Villages appellation and is widely regarded as the star among the seventeen villages that have the right to use this designation. This certified organic Rhone blend comes from 50-yearold vines and has a ripe and decadent nose, wild thyme, stones, and loads of Grenache fruit. On the palate, it is chewy, concentrated, with great tannins and palate-staining sensations.

This crisp, bright Grolleau (pronounced grow-low) rosé comes from the cool meritime Loire Valley region of the Nantais, and is made by a young rising star named Eric Chevalier. Eric’s family domaine is now in its fourth generation, and is in better hands than ever. This is simply delicious pink wine that is a killer companion with a wide variety of cuisines.

Eric Chevalier Domaine De L’aujardière Chardonnay ‘12 $11.99
Eric Chevalier’s family has owned Domaine de l’Aujardière for four generations, though he was the first to vinify and bottle the wines at the property. The estate is located in the village of Saint-Philbert de Grandlieu, just southwest of Nantes, in the western part of the Loire Valley. About half of the estate’s production is Muscadet, the rest divided between chardonnay, fie gris (also known as sauvignon gris), grolleau and pinot noir. The chardonnay is grown on soil rich with quartz, making this wine extra flinty and clean, with simple, lean fruit, not amplified by oak aging. Try this with a roast chicken with a lemon and mustard rub over roasted potatoes.

The Delaille family who runs Domaine du Salvard produces stellar wines in the Loire Valley region of Cheverny and their 100% Sauvignon Blanc bottling called “Unique” is truly that. This wine boasts an incredibly bright personality with zippy, zingy flavors of gooseberry, grass, kiwi and grapefruit that leave your palate thoroughly refreshed and invigorated.

Old World wine primarily to wine made in Europe but can also include other regions of the Mediterranean basin with long histories of winemaking such as North Africa and the Near East. The phrase is often used in contrast to “New World wine” which refers primarily to wines from New World wine regions such as the United States, Australia, South America and South Africa. The term “Old World wine” does not refer to a homogeneous style with “Old World wine regions” like Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Romania and Spain each making vastly different styles of wine even within their own borders. Rather, the term is used to describe general differences in viticulture and winemaking philosophies between the Old World regions where tradition and the role of terroir lead versus the New World where science and the role of the winemaker are more often emphasized. In recent times, the globalization of wine and advent of flying winemakers have lessened the distinction between the two terms with winemakers in one region being able to produce wines that can display the traits of the other region—i.e. an “Old World style” wine being produced in a New World wine region like California or Chile and vice versa!

55% Grenache, 45% Syrah. The 2011 Prestige is a supple and elegant fruit driven wine with notes of raspberries and truffle as well as lavender and garrigue. Beautiful texture and concentration with a long finish.

Domaine Faillenc Sainte Marie Corbieres Rouge ‘13 Languedoc, France $17.99
Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault. The Corbières Rouge is made from a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault. The harvest is partially destemmed before going into the fermentation tanks. The different cépages are fermented together, benefiting from the long maceration period to extract the maximum of flavors and allow them to harmonize before being pressed and aged. This is a wine with enormous character often showing a rustic, somewhat “animal” aspect married to a vivacious wild berry symphony of aromas and flavors. This wine is aged entirely in tank without exposure to barrel aging. The severe weather conditions that are present restrict yields (often as little as 25 hectoliters per hectare) and produce a highly concentrated wine that has a proven track record for ageability.

100% Montepulciano. Stainless steel fermented with 100% malolactic. Aged in cement tanks. This Sunnae Montepulciano is one of those wines that just screams “drink me!”. Loaded with abundant acidity and fresh fruit flavors, balanced out by smooth tannins, it has an incredibly versatile profile that makes a must-have at any table. This is the perfect “every day” table wine.

La Tradizione, ruby-red in colour with violet reflections when young, and tending towards garnet in the ageing process. Fresh and fleshy with floral hints of rose hip and violet. Harmonious, fullbodied with good structure. Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato, a rare indigenous wine, is produced in a limited area of the Monferrato Astigiano, in only seven localities including and centering on Castagnole Monferrato.

Oddero Langhe Nebbiolo Piemonte, Italy ‘12 $23.99
Since 2001, with the help of young and talented winemaker Luca Vaglio, Oddero winery has become one of the leading producers in Barolo. In the 1990’s, the co-op began making kosher wines for the Jewish population of Barcelona. A custom cuvee made for Eric Solomon, it exhibits notes of rose petals, raspberry jam, crushed rocks, spring flowers and kirsch. Stunningly rich and medium to fullbodied, with wonderful vibrancy, precision and minerality, this beauty could easily pass for a grand cru Burgundy — it’s that complex and interesting.

Conreria D’Scala Dei “Black Slate Escaladei” Priorat, Spain ‘13 $20.99
80% Garnatxa, 20% Cariñena. The Carthusian Monks arrived in the Priorat in the late 12th century one of the first things that they did was plant vines. Their priory, the Cartoixa d’Scala Dei, literally the steps to god, might have referred to the rugged landscape or the terraces required to farm this remote land. Black Slate Escaladei is an energetic, beautifully lifted and elegant Priorat that delivers plenty of jammy black raspberry, licorice, pepper, and underbrush like qualities that flow to a medium to full-bodied, fresh, and focused palate. Turning even more floral and elegant with air, this beautifully balanced and structured 2013 has a core of acidity, layers of fruit, and no shortage of length on the finish.
Casa Castillo “El Molar” Jumilla, Spain ‘13 $16.99
100% Garnacha. El Molar is Jumilla meets Rhone, a luxuriously silky, complex Garnacha that emphasizes the varietals red fruits and Pinot Noir-like texture without any undue alcoholic burn or overripe fruit character. Medium-full bodied with very fine tannins and soft acids, it exudes notes of Kirsch, ripe raspberry and dried Mediterranean herbs. This is a crazy good value to stock up on while you can (there is very little produced, unfortunately) and absolutely sings with grilled summer fair like chorizo, marinated skirt steak or good old cheeseburgers. One of the absolute top producers in Jumilla is Casa Castillo, operated by owner/winemaker Jose Maria Vicente and located high up in the Sierra del Molar mountains.

Grape varieties. Wine is usually
made from one or more varieties of the European
species Vitis vinifera, such as Pinot noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay and Merlot. When one of these varieties is used as the predominant grape (usually defined by law as minimums of 75% to 85%), the result is a “varietal” as opposed to a “blended” wine. Blended wines are not considered inferior to varietal wines, rather they are a different style of winemaking; some of the world’s most highly regarded wines, from regions like Bordeaux and the Rhone Valley, are blended from different grape varieties. grafting.
Most of the world’s vineyards are planted with
European V. vinifera vines that have been grafted onto North American species’ rootstock, a common practice due to their resistance to phylloxera, a root louse that eventually kills the vine. In the late 19th century, most of Europe’s vineyards (excluding some of the driest in the south) were devastated by the infestation, leading to widespread vine deaths and eventual replanting. Grafting is done in every wine-producing region in the world except in Argentina, the Canary Islands and Chile—the only places not yet exposed to the insect. In the context of wine production,
terroir is
a concept that encompasses the varieties of grapes
used, elevation and shape of the vineyard, type and chemistry of soil, climate and seasonal conditions, and the local yeast cultures. The range of possible combinations of these factors can result in great differences among wines, influencing the fermentation, finishing, and aging processes as well.
