My Pulpit Message - notes Is the news worth trending? My Pulpit Message Notes are extracted from the sermon preached at the Nairobi Baptist Church (NBC) Ngong Road on Sunday 24th April 2022. Preacher: Salame Leah, Youth Worship Leader. Topic: Is the news worth trending? Scripture: Matthew 28:18-20
Information is simply knowledge. News is an upgrade of information. News is information that is interesting, important and a recent happening. Trend is news that is high ranking. It is fashionable.
I cannot begin to fathom Someone who could split the sea into two, and instead of using the ferry to school, I walk on dry ground. That is the supremacy of our God. “18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” Here it is us considering who is sending us to go. They say that there are certain aspects of news and information that make it newsworthy. For information to become news, it has to meet certain criteria for example, about a celebrity, or someone of prominence etc. Colossians 1:15 says “15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.” Why should this news trend? Because the One from whom it originates from has superiority in the whole universe. We are talking about the Creator of the heavens and the earth, Who put a boundary to the sea. If you want to check how impossible that is, take a bottle of water, spill that water and try telling it, don’t go past here. Imagine someone who can tell the sea, don’t go past this point. Someone who formed such complexity in the intrinsic fibres of creation. Someone Who formed patterns and designs. Someone Who split the sea into two.
Substance of the message Matthew 28:20
“and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” In my first year of school we touched a little on IT, the basics, and there was a unit called ‘Networks’. I understood a network to be, as when we were young a game we used to play of using a pipe to talk through it with one person on one end and the other person on their ear. Imagine the pipe to be a network / medium that will transfer information. So one of the characteristics of a good network , we said, was one that maintains the integrity of the data. This means the message that is leaving point A should be the same message received at point B. It should be undistorted / unchanged. If we are the network and Jesus is point A and the world / nations to whom we are sent is point B, we are supposed to pass a message that retains its integrity. It should be undistorted. In this world, in these times, in this generation, there are topics that are now considered sensitive. There are topics where someone asks you what is your stand / take and because there is that fear of what if you answer and you are taken to be a judgmental person. It is important for us to maintain the integrity of the data that we are transmitting. Jesus is saying, ‘Teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.’
TT 150 | April 26th - May 2nd| 2022
My Pulpit Message - notes I recently completed my attachment at a certain institute and there was one time when I was asked what is my stand on homosexuality. This is a topic all of us have come to interact with. Either being asked, or watching shows about it and it is such a sensitive topic now, but that and the rest of the topics that we might be asked that are very sensitive. Sexual immorality these days is so easy, the come-we-stays are so normal, but it is important for us to maintain the integrity of the data. Teaching them to obey everything that we have been commanded. It means that when we speak, act, make a decision, when we choose a path, we are still maintaining the integrity of that data. Why? Because as Paul would say, “The gospel is the power of God unto salvation,”. And that is why it is integral for us to maintain the integrity of that data. The gospel is the power of God, it is able to change/transform the listeners, it is able to turn their lives around. Again, what did it do for you? Then it can do for other people. It is vital for us to maintain the integrity of that data. We don’t have to have gone to a theological school, I haven’t. We were simply called to be witnesses. On our dates with Mrs. Mulandi, an amazing company, one of the questions she almost always asks is, have you started discipling someone yet? My answer the first days was, I’m too young , I was around 20, or 21 then, and she asked me, am I being discipled and I answered, yes. And she said it is simply that. What you are being taught, you go and tell others. Just that. That is the substance of the message that we are also taking. It shouldn’t be overwhelming that we should have gone to some theological school and graduated after some six years. It is simply passing on what you have heard. So I feel like we can put more pressure on going for Bible study because then you can have something to share. We can put more weight on going to church and sharing with believers because then you have something to share. We can put more weight on personal studies and quiet time because then, you will have something to share. But remember, the weight of this is to maintain the integrity of that data. Don’t veer off. We shouldn’t trend what is acceptable / fashionable to people. We teach everything He commanded us.
Nobility of the task Matthew 28:20
I love movies, particularly epic movies. Epic movies are those which talk about the period of vikings and warriors and kings. It depicts the period between after Jesus coming and just before technology rose. There is a phrase that they make, ‘someone being on the king’s errand’. That would simply mean, someone has been sent on behalf of the king to represent them somewhere. They will either pass a message, or hold discussions on behalf of the king. They are the king’s hand. It did not really matter who this errand boy was because you are simply the image of the king so if you respected the king, then you would respect this errand boy because he is representing that king. It is interesting because they ride on the best horses, they get robed in red regalia, they eat nicely and are treated very well, but it is not them. It doesn’t matter whether this person came from a poor or rich background, because they are representing the king and were treated as the king would have been treated. It doesn’t matter where you come from, but it is vital that you don’t embarrass the king. So
they are always acting in their best behaviour. We are on the King’s errand and it is not fiction/movie/ movie genre. This is real life. We have been sent by the King who split the sea into two. We are representing the King and so when we talk, we should speak oracles, as people who have been sent by the King. The King chooses to use me, who sometimes is not diligent, sometimes steps on people’s toes etc. But the King has sent me and you to hold this message that is able to change people’s lives and make them better, to give them hope. We have been sent, we are on the King’s errand. The conclusion of the matter is this; that man is in desperate need of a Saviour. Someone who will save us from ourselves, from our selfishness, from our distractive nature,Someone who will help us in our struggles. Man is also completely unable to help himself. We need help, but cannot help ourselves. Even our best efforts really come to nothing. Out attempts at salvation, self preservation are futile. We can look at the environment around us, things degrading and things dyeing and it is really us. There is a disconnect. The good news is that there is a Saviour. Someone who is able to help. Again, what did He do for you? Where would you have been if it wasn’t for God? In this world where things are going astray there is a Saviour, there is a God, who was willing to save this wretched man. So willing, He laid down His life to call me and you, us lawless people us naked, rebellious, poor, weak people, sons. There is a Saviour holding out salvation. There is a Saviour Who’s impact in our lives will make our impact actually matter. Why would anyone miss it? Why would anyone miss that good message? Why would anyone struggle for what will not satisfy? Why would we continue striving and we are not even helping ourselves? Because we have not heard? Far be it from us. That is why we need to trend this news. Because there is a Saviour. It is relevant to people. They need to know that there is a Saviour. So we are the ones who will trend this news. We are the ones who will stand boldly and say / shout on top of our lungs that there is a God. He rescued me and He can rescue you. And we will use whatever tools we have. We may not all have gone to a theological school, but we can sing, so we will sing loudly. We can dance, so we will dance vigorously. We have our professions, we have people under us, people we can impact, so we will make it trend with tools that we have. We will use our voices, and our passion and we will use our knowledge, our testimony and we will make this news trend because it is worth trending. Yes this news is worth trending. So my life and your life should reflect that. I know if all of us decided to send a tweet, it wouldn’t reach six thousand in a second, but we can use what we have and we can make this news to trend. There is forgiveness and help and salvation, and hope and joy and peace like people have not experience before if we will just turn our focus and look at Christ, the supremacy of the Sender, the substance of the Message and the nobility of this Task. We are on the Kings errand.

CONFESSIONS
“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” James 5:16
when my phone alarm clock goes off in the wee hours of the morning, the temptation to silence the alarm and to back to shut-eye is on extremely high red alert. But an even louder alarm goes off in my head that says, “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest— and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.” This one verse that is repeated in twice in Proverbs 6:10-11 and 24:33-34, makes to literally jump out of bed in such a way that sleep completely disappears.
It is one thing to confess your sins to God when you are in a secret place, it is another to confess your sins to another person. To be in a vulnerable place can be quite daunting yet, God’s Word actually commands us to confess our sins one unto another. What’s the benefit? Well, from the simple understanding I have of James 5:16 verse in the Scripture, it I think of times when my Role Model Jemarks the beginning of a healing process when after confession, you pray sus rose early in the morning when it was still dark to go and pray, I am for each other. encouraged to copy Him. My Education The five Ps to consider when choosing a career
By William Mwangi - Career Coach, Crawford international School | image credit: dreamstime.com
Over 800,000 candidates who sat for this year’s KCSE walked out of the exam rooms heads held high, beaming with excitement and ambition as they step into what they believe will be a bright future. Well, the prospects of that future will be determined, largely, by one question: What career path to take? While some may have already had the advantage of receiving career guidance, a possible majority of others will face that question much later. Ideally, that process should begin in the early years of post-primary education, but it is never too late to identify a career that one is suited for.
Passion will make you wake up in the middle of the night to complete a task. Passion will make you say NO to distractions that are not aligned with your vision. Passion is the drive that will unlock your career. It is the fuel that will fire you up past all challenges along the way.
2. Performance
must decide how you will get there. The career-planning process allows you to identify your strengths and interests so that you can discover professional opportunities you are likely to enjoy and excel in. You first need to understand your needs, strengths, personality, skills, talents and interests to make informed academic and career decisions. It is imperative to start planning your career early. How early is too early? I believe that as early as one gets into formal schooling, one is already exposed to career planning.
4. Professional exposure Some students know exactly what they want to do in life as far as careers are concerned. Some have no clue. The reason is that most students are not exposed to professionals in different areas. I always encourage parents and guardians to expose their children to their friends in different careers.
There are as many careers to choose from as there are the disciplines available in tertiary institutions. Individual preferences are even more varied. So how does one go about identifying and choosing how they will spend the rest- or most oftheir active adult life?
Psychologically, children learn through observation and imitation. Exposure to different professions and careers arouses their interest. This can be done through job, or professional shadowing, internships, attending career talks, or just visiting different organizations. At Crawford International School, we regularly invite different professionals to share experiences in their specific fields. This elicits a lot of interest in the students.
I propose five pointers, which I call the five Ps that form a useful compass when navigating the uncharted high seas of making a career choice. These are Passion, performance, professional exposure, planning and personality type.
5. Personality type
Let us explore one by one to see why they are important in choosing a career path.

Why is a personality important in choosing a career? Learning your personality allows you to appreciate your emotions, behaviours, and thought patterns. For example, do you prefer to work alone, or do you prefer to work with others? Would you be content in a career that requires that you are extremely organized and have a set schedule? Or are you the type of person that likes to have an open, flexible schedule that allows you to be spontaneous? This information will assist you in deciding which career matches your personality preferences. That is why Crawford International Schools places a high premium on psychometric tests before students select their subjects. These tests help learners understand themselves more in terms of aligning their personalities with their career options.
My Inspiration Patience with great expectations
By William King | Email: kingwilliam189@gmail.com | image courtesy: christianity.com
We all go through waiting times that can be difficult. Perhaps we’re waiting for a doctor’s report about our condition or for responses to job applications. We need to know that God is not making us wait to make it hard on us. He’s causing us to develop our character. Patience is an inner strength that we all need to learn. It is what brings forth God’s promises. The writer of Hebrews says, “For you have need of patient endurance, so that you have carried out the will of God, you may receive and enjoy to the full what is promised.”
The farmer waits with great expectation, looking for the rain, watching for sprouts, believing for a harvest, even when he doesn’t see anything happening. He knows it’s just a matter of time and the soil will yield a harvest if he patiently endures the wait.
If we’re going to bring forth the promises of God in our lives, we have to develop the patience that waits with great expectations. When it’s taking longer than we thought, we can’t grow weary and lose our enthusiasm. The prophet Habakkuk said, “You told me to write the vision down, hold it close but it’s taking a long time.”
We need to develop our patience, knowing that at the right time, God is going to get us where we need to be as well as give us what we need. God doesn’t say that we shouldn’t sit around passively. He says we should be actively waiting. The Scripture says, “See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains” (James 5:7).
If we’re going to bring forth the promises of God in our lives, we have to develop the patience that waits with great expectations. When it’s taking longer than we thought, we can’t grow weary and lose our enthusiasm. The prophet Habakkuk said, “You told me to write the vision down, hold it close but it’s taking a long time.” God replied, “I said it was for an appointed time. Though it linger, wait for it. It will certainly come and not delay.” What are you waiting for? Be patient and get prepared. God is more interested in what is being developed in you while you wait than what you’re waiting for.

Learning after sleep may be key for consolidating information
www.medicalnewstoday.com | Written by Corrie Pelc on April 24, 2022 — Fact checked by Anna Guildford, Ph.D
Researchers from Brown University and the RIKEN Center for Brain Science provide further evidence on the correlation between sleep and learning.
Learning-dependent vs use-dependent models
Scientists found that processes specifically related to learning help a person consolidate during sleep what they learn while awake. They believe their findings provide more proof of a learning-dependent model rather than a use-dependent model when it comes to how sleep supports the learning process.
According to lead study author Dr. Yuka Sasaki, professor of cognitive, linguistic, and psychological sciences in the Neuroscience Graduate Program at Brown University, sleep facilitates learning. However, researchers had conflicting models to explain how it does that — the use-dependent model and the learning-dependent model.
Staying up late to cram for tests has become a normal part of the high school and college academic process. Now, researchers from Brown University in the United States and the RIKEN Center for Brain Science in Japan say that this practice hinders rather than helps the learning process.
The use-dependent model states that the amount a person learns while sleeping is the result of how the brain functions when awake. On the other hand, the learning-dependent model states that what a person retains during sleep is directly connected to a neural process specifically related to learning.
Researchers found evidence that suggests sleep helps a person absorb what they learn while awake through a process that is specifically centered on learning. This means that the more sleep a person gets, the more time their brain has to process knowledge and skills learned while they are awake.
For this study, Dr. Sasaki and her team wanted to find out which model was most likely to aid learning. Researchers used two experimental sets of human volunteers, including a mix of both males and females.
The results from this study appear in The Journal of Neuroscience.

My Health During the first experiment, participants learned a visual perceptual learning (VPL) task called a texture discrimination task (TDT). A VPL task helps strengthen the brain’s ability to comprehend what the eyes see. This helps in a variety of visual perception skills, such as visual and sequential memory, being able to differentiate between one object and another, and visual-spatial relations.
On the other hand, if school hours could be modified so that kids’ night sleep could be longer, this may be great.”
Those in the second group were also taught the TDT task and underwent testing both before and after a 90-minute nap. However, researchers structured this experiment differently, causing interference within the learning process.
“When they’re studying for a test, they might stay up late or do an all-nighter thinking that’s going to help, whereas this [study] would suggest that actually going to bed is going to facilitate and help with the learning and consolidation.”
