HEALTHY YUMMY RECIPES FOR SPRING WEATHER

KIWI SORBET /GRANITA Sweet and tart kiwis make an ultra-refreshing sorbet or granita. If you want a more brilliant green color and smoother texture, strain pureed kiwis through a finemesh sieve before chilling and freezing to remove brown seeds. However, that the seeds add what many find to be a nice bit of texture to the sorbet.

Ingredients: 1 cup sugar 10 kiwis 2 lemons

Directions: In a small saucepan dissolve sugar in 1 cup water over medium heat. Let it cool.

Peel kiwifruit and roughly chop. Put in a blender or food processor. Zest lemon to yield 1 tsp. finely shredded or minced zest. Add to blender. Roll lemon on a hard surface to loosen juice. Cut the lemon in half and juice to yield 2 Tbsp. juice (reserve any remaining juice for another use).

Add juice to kiwis.

Add cooled syrup to kiwis and whirl until mixture is smooth.

For sorbet: Transfer mixture to a bowl, cover and chill until cold (about 30 minutes). Transfer to an ice cream maker and freeze according to manufacturer's instructions. For granita: Pour mixture into a metal dish and place in the freezer until it just starts to set, about 1 hour. Using a fork, scrape set or frozen sides into the looser middle every 1/2 hour until firm, about 4 hours total. To serve, scrape entire mixture with a fork to lighten texture.

Keep covered and frozen up to 1 day. Ready to serve.

CORN SALAD Ingredients: 5 ears of corn, shucked 2 medium tomatoes chopped 1/2 cup small-diced red onion (1 small onion) 3 tablespoons cider vinegar 3 tablespoons good olive oil 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 cup julienned fresh basil leaves

Directions: In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the corn for 3 minutes until the starchiness is just gone. Drain and immerse it in ice water to stop the cooking and to set the color. When the corn is cool, cut the kernels off the cob, cutting close to the cob.

Toss the kernels in a large bowl with the red onions, vinegar, olive oil, salt, tomatoes and pepper. Just before serving, toss in the fresh basil.

Taste for seasonings and serve cold or at room temperature.

MEANING OF EASTER Easter for me as a child was candy, hiding eggs, all the family gathering, lots of good food, coloring eggs, pickled eggs and opening the front door to see that the Easter Bunny had left me a basket. Wow! Now that was fun times. I also would walk down the railroad track to go to church to learn about Easter in my pretty little dress. It was all fun to me. I was just a young child and only knew what I was taught or what I caught. Easter is about all of this and more.

Our world is a messed up world because of the trends humans try to follow. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to ever die. This old body will die and my spirit will remain because I am going to follow Jesus and what the bible says to do. I will have eternal life. That should be enough in it’s self to leave the world behind and do what’s right. I sometimes feel scared when I think of death, but then I think about who I serve and what I am promised if I serve him. Wow! What a great trade. Instead, Jesus went farther. He turned up to join two of his disciples who were journeying from Jerusalem to a village called Emmaus. However, Jesus did not make himself known to them. Jesus to them came to be known as a stranger who had real mastery over the holy Scriptures. Impressed, they invited Jesus to stay with them and share their meal. Jesus agreed. At the table they recognized Jesus; he disappeared.

In no time the two disciples headed for Jerusalem.

When they met the apostles and told them about everything happened, Jesus made his appearance. And Jesus convinced them all that he was alive and asked them if anything was there to eat. Then he ate in their presence as a living man does. With this everybody there became overwhelmed with joy that their master had returned to life. And life again had become meaningful to the apostles.

Jesus had eaten with them. He talked to them in a familiar manner and reminded them that he had come from heaven, sent by his Father to perform a task.

Now, the task had been done by offering his life for the sins of mankind, it is time for the apostles to follow his suit. Jesus gave the apostles the Holy Spirit: the power over sin. So one whose sins are forgiven by the apostles, would be forgiven by the heaven. After this Jesus left, as suddenly as he came in.

Jesus returned to the same place on the next Sunday, to make the unbelievers believe. Jesus showed himself to teach his apostles the lessons and to teach them to live without him. Jesus did this for a period of forty days.

On the fortieth day of reappearance, when he felt he had given the disciples all that he had to, he went back to the heaven. This same Jesus will come back just the same way He has left. He had left his disciples to carry on his work and to reach his message of love and peace to all.

Wilson's Bird-of-Paradise

The Wilson's Bird-of-Paradise, Cicinnurus Respublica, is a small, up to 21 cm long, passerine bird of the Paradisaeidae family.

In the field, the blue bare skin on the crown of the bird's head is so vivid that it is clearly visible by night; the deep scarlet back and velvet green breast are lush, the curlicue tail gleaming bright silver. An Indonesian endemic, the Wilson's Bird-of-Paradise is distributed to the hill and lowland rainforests of Waigeo and Batanta Islands off West Papua.

The diet consists mainly of fruits and small insects. The controversial scientific name of this species was given

by Charles Lucien Bonaparte, Napoleon's nephew and a republican idealist, who described the bird from a badly damaged trade specimen purchased by British ornithologist Edward Wilson.

The German zoologist Heinrich Agathon Bernstein discovered the home grounds of the Wilson's Bird-ofParadise in Waigeo Island. Due to ongoing habitat loss, limited range and exploitation, the Wilson's Bird-ofParadise is evaluated as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

The year was 1999. I was about to graduate from UNC- Chapel Hill and was ready to save the world! I had just joined the Peace Corps and was set to go! Africa here I come! I was so ready, so willing to give of myself to the world and do what I had always loved mosthelp others and my dream was coming true- to feed the hungry in Africa.

But wait….The phone just rang at my parents’ house in the small town of Randleman, NC. My father had been on the waiting list for a heart transplant for quite some time. He had cardiomyopathy and a transplant was inevitable.

Low and behold, they had a heart for my dad. The date is forever etched in every heart in our family….November 22, 1999. They took him in on November 21, 1999, and shortly after midnight, on 11/22/99, my father received the gift of life. I wasn’t going in the Peace CorpsJ. Something better had happened- my father had been given back his life. I couldn’t leave, not just yet, maybe not ever. I had been given back time with my dad- my dad, a loving husband, a father to 5 daughters, and a lifelong pastor.

To this date, my father is a SURVIVOR. He is a 13 year heart transplant recipient, which is quite the miracle. Every day we celebrate his life and are thankful for one more day with him. The day he received his heart transformed my life. My dad was at my wedding on September 16, 2001, walked me down the aisle, and he even married us! I never thought he would be at my wedwww.timewiselymagazine.com

ding, marry me, or dance with me at my reception, which he did! Two years later, he was at the hospital, and in the next room when I gave birth to my daughter.

I never thought he would see that day either. He has been there to see her grow and to be a part of each of his children’s and grandchildren’s life.

My dad received the gift of life and has been at so many of my life’s events, thanks to the unselfish gift of our donor.

We are really good friends with the donor family, and we treasure the gift that our angel “Paul” gave to my dad. His decision changed our life.

Yeah, I never got to go in the Peace Corps…..I ended up meeting my husband, falling in love, and the rest is history…. Maybe one dayJ. I wouldn’t trade that choice for anything…hearing my dad’s voice on the other line is a dream come true too. ~Anita Dwyer

Circles Without God Do you want to spend your whole life not knowing what God wants you to do? We are supposed to live for Him. When you are working for God you experience peace and joy.

Nobody ever said life was easy. Life is a challenge and full of ups and downs. Who am I kidding, it’s a roller coaster! You are not the only one who may feel this way. Most people only see what’s on the outside. Don’t be fooled by the cover of the book.

If your life is like a roller coaster and you feel like you are going in circles, stop and develop a relationship with God? Would you like for your life to be easier and less stressful? Of course, of course! Who wouldn’t want life to be easier and have some purpose and direction?

So, it goes like this: God has a plan for all of us. The majority of us won’t and don’t develop a strong relationship with God. It takes time and obedience. I would say it’s just like any other relationship, but that’s not true. A relationship with God is unique and He has high expectations. It does not mean you have to be perfect before you can develop a relationship with God. Just be you and seek God. He will help guide you and show you “your purpose.” So, stop going in circles and listen to God. Find your purpose and have peace and joy.

Gain knowledge. It’s all about choices. It’s up to you. Nobody will make you do anything but you. A fresh start would be great depending on were you are in your life. I had a fresh start at age 34. Life is great but not easy. God never said it would be easy. I have made it a point to do what God says.

I ASKED GOD TO PROTECT ME FROM MY ENEMIES AND I STARTED LOSING FRIENDS....

If you pass by your bible and God says open it up and read, then READ. If you are walking and God says, “say Jesus loves you” to the person you just walked by, then go back and say Jesus loves you. If God says go to church there is a message for you, go to church. Be obedient. God is your strength. As you develop your relationship with God, your faith in Him will grow stronger. You will have less worries and learn to lay your burdens upon Him. Your fear will start to disappear. You will have direction. If you don’t have that relationship with Him, it’s never ever too late to start.

It takes practice and obedience.

What are you waiting on? Stop going in circles with no purpose.

Never Give Up At some point in the various journeys we embark on in our lives, we get to a part where we feel like giving up. Sometimes we give up before we even start and other times we give up just before we are about to make that huge break through that we have been putting so much effort in to achieve. I have created this list of 21 reasons why you should never give up and I hope that you will find it before you give up, so that I can inspire you to keep going!

1As Long As You Are Alive Anything Is Possible The only valid excuse you have to give up is if you are dead. As long as you are alive (and healthy and free) you have the choice to keep trying until you finally succeed.

2Be Realistic The chance of mastering something the first time you do it is almost nonexistent. Everything takes time to learn and you will make mistakes. Learn from them.

3Michael Jordan Arguably the best basketball player of all time. He attributes his success to all his failures. He just never gave up even when he knew he had missed over 300 shots and had missed the winning shot of the game many times. Envy/Crab Mentality Envy is best defined as a resentful emotion that "occurs when a person lacks another's (perceived) superior quality, achievement or possession and wishes that the other lacked it."

A great analogy that a former superior taught me was the old crab pot trick. If you have ever put a bunch of crabs in a pot or bucket, you may have noticed that the one crab that would climb to the top would always be pulled back down.

It never fails. Unfortunately, this is reality for humans. Not all, but most. I am not that way. I always want people to be successful and reach their goals...even if they do it better or have more than me. It’s great to set goals according to what you want and need, but keep the envy out of the equation. Envy is sinful and will only bring you down. It will not help you get where and what you need and want.

Often, envy involves a motive to "outdo or undo the rival's advantages". In part, this type of envy may be based on materialistic possessions rather than psychological states. Basically, people find themselves experiencing an overwhelming emotion due to someone else owning or possessing desirable items that they do not.

I have come to realize that the only person that really matters is Jesus. As long as I am pleasing to him, I am good. I want to grow and do the right thing, for the right reasons.

Isaiah 26:11 Lord, when thy hand is lifted up, they will not see: but they shall see, and be ashamed for their envy at the people; yea, the fire of thy enemies shall devour them.

Proverbs 27:4 Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?

Proverbs 14:30 A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.

Job 5:2 For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one.

Don’t Put All Your Eggs In One Basket...

It is an idiomatic phrase meaning that one should not focus all his or her resources on one hope, possibility or avenue of success or just one person. If that one person fails you then you will be "broken" and left with nothing/no eggs. It is a proverb that warns against pinning all your hopes on one course of action. If you put all your eggs in one basket and then drop the basket, you will break all your eggs. Similarly, if you pin all your hopes on one course of action and it fails, then you are left with no recourse.

If you put all of your eggs in one basket when you are ready to sell them, then if anything happens to the basket, all the eggs will be gone. Therefore, it is best to put the eggs into several different baskets for safekeeping - or, best to put your money or time or investment into several different things.

Putting all your eggs in one basket means in most cases: investing all of your resource or money into one thing.

The comparison is that if you put all of your eggs into one basket and something happens to the basket such as you dropping it, all of your eggs break and you have nothing left compared to distributing your eggs into two or more baskets. So if something happens to the one, you still have your others eggs. If you invest all of your money into one company and the company fails, you have lost all of your money.

If you put all your eggs in one basket, you risk everything on a single opportunity which, like eggs breaking, could go wrong.

It means putting all of ones hopes into one outcome.

Example sentences: He tried out for both the football team and the cross country team, that way he didn't have all his eggs in one basket. My heart is set on going to Weslyn college, but I applied to four different schools to avoid having all my eggs in one basket. If Weslyn doesn't work out, I'm sure to attend college someplace else.

If the eggs are in two or more baskets, even if one basket breaks, you can still make it home with eggs or your children.

The idea is to spread your risk across several non-related areas. That way, if one of those areas turns sour , it doesn't result in a you losing everything; you can keep going with your remaining investments.

It means to concentrate your bets, putting yourself in line for either a huge payoff or big losses. If you put "all your money in one wallet," your money is either completely safe from theft, or it's all gone because someone found and stole it.

This also goes for many things beyond money. It could mean a job or even a friend. The only time you should “put all your eggs in one basket” is with Jesus. You will never need a plan B. Plan B is a backup plan. Sometimes, depending on the situation, you can’t always have plan B. For example, when buying a house. That is a big deal and most people only have one without plan B. ATTENTION ALL SALES PEOPLE! Do you have a group of clients that are your most profitable clients? I know a gentleman who used to sell a product to Dicks Sporting Goods. He had other clients like Walmart, Best Buy, Chilis, Kmart, McDonalds and the list goes on.

However, Dicks Sporting Goods was really hot and buying lots of product and this particular sales person decided not to work with the other corporations because his eggs were all in the one basket that was buying. Noticed I said was. The salesperson proceeded to make lots of money from Dicks and forgot about the rest. That’s easy to do.

The owner of the company he worked with always said never put “all your eggs in one basket. Spread it out and chose different companies.”

Unfortunately, that particular sales person did not listen Spread you assets or eggs or anything else of value. Then and Dicks stopped buying. Getting a new client to buy you have a few baskets, if you drop one its not so importakes up to 3 weeks. Because he had all his eggs in one tant. 5Muhammad Ali “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”. Muhammad Ali is one of the best boxers the world has ever known. He suffered only 5 losses while having 56 wins and was the first boxer to win the lineal heavyweight championship three times. This is a guy who literally knows how to get knocked down and get back up.

6The Man Who Created The Marathon Very long ago an Athenian herald was sent to Sparta to get help when the Persians landed in Greece. It was said that he ran 240km in 2 days and after that he ran 40km to announce the victory of the Greeks only to collapse and die on the spot from exhaustion. If you ever feel like things are difficult, imagine what it would be like to run 240km in 2 days.

7Chris Gardner – The Pursuit of Happiness Have you seen the movie “The Pursuit of Happiness”? It is based on the life story of Chris Gardener, a man who went for the lowest of the lows in an environment where most people would give up (no money, no job) to the highest of the highs (A millionaire with his own investment firm). If you ever think about giving up, watch this movie!

8Kanye West I’m pretty sure you have heard of the rapper Kanye West.

Read his story. He is a big inspiration for me and proves that you can go from having very little to being among the most famous and respected people in the world.

9You Are Strong You are stronger than you think. One little setback is not enough to stop you from achieving your goals. Neither are 10 or 100 or 1000 setbacks.

10Prove Yourself You don’t want to be known as someone that is weak and gives up. Go out there and prove yourself to the world and to yourself. You CAN and WILL achieve what you set out to do. The only time you fail is when you give up.

11Has It Been Done Before?

If someone else can do it then so can you. Even if it is only one other person in the world that has achieved what you have set out to achieve, that should be reason enough for you to never give up.

12Believe In Your Dreams Don’t sell yourself short. In life there are going to be many people who will try to bring you down and tell you

what you want to achieve is not possible. Don’t let anyone destroy your dreams.

13Your Family and Friends.

Let the people you love and who mean the world to you be your inspiration to persist and persevere. Maybe you need to try a different angle, study more or practice more but don’t give up!

14Because I Tell You To. Not that I am any sort of guru or Godly figure, but if you want to give up then don’t. Just because I’m telling you not to.

15There Are People Worse-Off Right now there are many people who are in a worse situation and environment than you are right now. Are you thinking about giving up running 5 miles a week?

Think about the people who are unable to even walk and how much they would give to be able to run 5 miles every day.

16Improve Our World When you achieve whatever you set out to achieve you can use your success to make a difference to the world or other peoples lives.

17Get Rich or Die Trying Like Fiddy (50 cent) says, “Get rich or die trying”. 50 Cent is rich, he made it (although he did get shot 9 times).

Face your fears and don’t take the easy way out by giving up.

18Let The Haters Hate There will always be haters. There will always be plenty of naysayers and people who try to tear you down. Don’t pay attention to them and don’t take what they say to heart. Let the haters hate and you keep believing in yourself.

19You Deserve To Be Happy Don’t ever let anybody tell you otherwise. You deserve to be happy and you deserve to have success. Keep that mindset and never give up until you reach your destination!

20Inspire Others Be an inspiration to others by refusing to give up. Who knows what someone else can achieve because you never gave up and in turn inspired them not to give up.

21You Are So Close Often when you feel like you want to give up and you are about to give up: you are so close to making a huge break-thru. Seth Godin has written an awesome book about this called “The Dip” – a riveting read that teaches that at any given time you are always just a heartbeat away from success.

SCARS Once upon a time there was a little boy who was talented, creative, handsome, and extremely bright. A natural leader. The kind of person everyone would normally have wanted on their team or project. But he was also self-centered and had a very bad temper. When he got angry, he usually said, and often did, some very hurtful things. In fact, he seemed to have little regard for those around him. Even friends. So, naturally, he had few.

“But,” he told himself, “that just shows how stupid most people are!”

As he grew, his parents became concerned about this personality flaw, and pondered long and hard about what they should do. Finally, the father had an idea. And he struck a bargain with his son. He gave him a bag of nails, and a BIG hammer. “Whenever you lose your temper,” he told the boy, “I want you to really let it out. Just take a nail and drive it into the oak boards of that old fence out back. Hit that nail as hard as you can!”

Of course, those weathered oak boards in that old fence were almost as tough as iron, and the hammer was mighty heavy, so it wasn’t nearly as easy as it first sounded. Nevertheless, by the end of the first day, the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence (That was one angry young man!). Gradually, over a period of weeks, the number dwindled down. Holding his temper proved to be easier than driving nails into the fence! Finally the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He felt mighty proud as he told his parents about that accomplishment. “As a sign of your success,” his father responded, “you get to PULL OUT one nail. In fact, you can do that each day that you don’t lose your temper even once.”

Well, many weeks passed. Finally one day the young boy was able to report proudly that all the nails were gone.

At that point, the father asked his son to walk out back with him and take one more good look at the fence. “You have done well, my son,” he said. “But I want you to notice the holes that are left. No matter what happens from now on, this fence will never be the same. Saying or doing hurtful things in anger produces the same kind of result. There will always be a scar. It won’t matter how many times you say you’re sorry, or how many years pass, the scar will still be there. And a verbal wound is as bad as a physical one. People are much more valuable than an old fence. They make us smile. They help us succeed. Some will even become friends who share our joys, and support us through bad times. And, if they trust us, they will also open their hearts to us. That means we

REMEMBER TO PRAY Sometimes do you get very angry and fed up with people or the way they do things?

Well, I can say I feel that way sometimes too. I get so caught up in my emotions and being outraged, I forget to do the right thing. PRAY! Bad mouthing the person you are mad at will never help the situation. In the end it doesn’t matter who’s right or wrong in your eyes, only in God’s eyes. Staying angry won’t help either. Sometimes I find it hard to pray when I am upset. It’s really important to let things go that bother you, so you can have more room for the things that make you happy. You are what you dwell on. I am going to chose to trust and have faith in Jesus. Jesus is who I will dwell on and with. It’s all about choices. Will you make the right decision? Pray first,

act second.

WHO PICKS YOUR FRIENDS When I rededicated my life to the Lord I had to cut ties with whole "letting people go" thing. I am sharing this to enmany people who I considered friends. For many of them, courage someone out there to listen to the Lord when He the reasons were obvious. Some key players, the reasons moves you to a different oikos (not the yogurt...it is Greek were not so obvious. I spent many days and nights, weeks for your sphere of influence...your closest peeps!) Let Him and months questioning why God would leave me here on not only change the way you love others, but also to bring this earth without any "friends". I knew He was always the people to you that He has for you to love!!! I promise, with me and was teaching me that many people who I you will be thankful that you did! Thanks again to all of called "friend" were really not. He was teaching me to trust you who shared in my special day...but thanks most of all Him and to depend on Him to be my friend who sticks for your love every day! ~Paula Millsaps closer than a brother. HOW TO SAVE MONEY

Luke 16:13 "No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."

Many

desirable things quickly turn me from You. I admit I willingly fall far from You when worldly toys attract me. Forgive me for placing anything ahead of Your love.

Though deep down I know things can never replace You, when money or goods attract me, I don’t usually ponder the exchange I’d be making. I want to believe I can have it all. Remind me, Lord, that to be faithful to You, even my money must serve you. Spritual things have so much more value than the wealth I desire.

Make me wholeheartedly desire Your will, Jesus, so I cannot serve the wrong master.

ADVERTISEMENTS Don’t let advertisements fool your brain: price compare first.

Did they mark it up before putting it on sale? Good question.

These advertisers want to get you emotionally excited and throw you off your normal buying habits. You get excited and it doesn’t register in your brain that you didn’t do your homework before buying.

Look for coupons and don’t just buy something because you have a coupon. Ask yourself if you need it and is it a really great deal that you may never see again. If the answer is YES; buy it!

I shop at all the grocery stores. I won’t mention the stores, but there are 2 who mark the prices up and then put BOGO on it.

Most of the time Walmart is cheaper. Do your research. You will be surprised at the difference in cost. It’s a smart way to market but it’s not smart for the shoppers. Don’t get me wrong there are some good sales out there. Please be aware.

Bank Saving Method-WITHOUT TRYING Yes! I said without trying. If you have any income (big or little), please listen. First, write down all your bills and the due dates: don’t forget food and gas. Keep it somewhere convenient.

Open a checking account, if you don’t already have one. Set up automatic drafts for all your bills or bill pay. You have to do this online. Take the amount of income and subtract the bills per week or biweekly (depending on when you get paid). Figure out how much you have left over, keep 10% of what’s left over and save the rest.

Now to save without trying...open up a second account. Make sure you have access to it online. Set up an automatic transfer, weekly or bi-weekly for the amount you can save, to the new account you are going to open. When you open the second account, DO NOT get checks or a checkcard. The only way you can get cash is transfer it back or go to the bank.

Fear, Anxiety and Worry…

What does the Bible say?

“An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up” (Proverbs 12:25, NIV) “I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears” (Psalm 34:4) “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7) “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:6-7) (Also see Psalm 55:22-23) “Then Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Fear, Anxiety and Worry What the Bible Says continued..

Also read: Psalm 139:1-23 The possible causes of anxiety and fear are many: Conflict, health problems, dangerous situations, death, unmet needs, spiritual problems, false beliefs, etc.

“According to the Bible, there is nothing wrong with realistically acknowledging and trying to deal with the identifiable problems of life. To ignore danger is fooling and wrong. But it is also wrong, as well as unhealthy, to be immobilized by excessive worry. Such worry must be committed to prayer to God, who can release us from paralyzing fear or anxiety, and free us to deal realistically with the needs and welfare both of others and of ourselves.” (Dr. Gary R. Collins, Christian Counseling, p. 66.)

Some general, common sense suggestions for those weighed down with fear, anxiety or worry…

SIN IN YOUR LIFE - Sometimes fear and anxiety are the result of one’s own sin and guilt. If you have committed a sin or done anything evil, your fear and anxiety is probably God and your own conscience trying to get your attention. You need to repent, confess your sin, seek God’s forgiveness, and set it right.

SLEEP - Humans generally need 8 or 9 hours of sleep per day. Sleep deprivation can increase anxiety. Get enough rest. If you cannot sleep, you may need to seek God’s help and perhaps that of a physician.

TALK to someone. Don’t hold all the anxiety inside. It can be a big relief to share your fears and worries with someone else—a friend, relative, pastor or counselor. If fear and anxiety is an ongoing problem in your life, schedule a regular time each week to talk with someone.

TAKE ACTION - If there is something practical and wise that you can do to alleviate the problem or avoid needless danger, take action. Don’t put it off. Procrastination will generally raise your anxiety level.

EXERCISE - Medical studies show that exercise can help lower anxiety. If you are healthy enough to exercise, try it.

Regular brisk walks, running, swimming or other exercises can be a real stress reducer.

PROFESSIONAL HELP - There are various organizations which provide help for people with anxiety attacks, including the Midwest Center for Stress and Anxiety (stresscenter.com) which provides self-help. You can search for information and assistance on the Web using keywords such as: anxiety, panic attacks, agoraphobia.

You should be able to find local help by consulting you pastor or physician.

Pastor Tracey Troy & the Victory Village Vision Pastor Tracey Troy is the founder and senior pastor of Victory In Jesus Church located in rural southeastern North Carolina, at 132 West Main Street in Whiteville. A native of the same town, she began her sojourn into ministry at age 17, serving in local and state Christian youth groups, speaking and singing, across Columbus and neighboring counties. Her earliest glimpses at what a preaching ministry was all about came via an informal apprenticeship under a then nationallyknown evangelist, Betty Burns.

Evangelist Hudson, currently Pastor Betty Burns, and a full-fledged pastor at Greater Revival Temple in Orlando, Florida, became the guiding force and example that eventually steered Pastor Troy toward what has become her life’s work. Even today, she introduces and speaks of Pastor Burns as her “spiritual mother.”

Though not yet formally licensed or ordained, her pursuit of gospel ministry continued throughout college at North Carolina Central University in Durham. There she was intricately involved in campus ministry organizations until she graduated. Licensed to preach by Friendship Missionary Baptist in Whiteville in 1986, the well respected singer and speaker expanded her evangelism throughout the Eastern Seaboard. However, it was in Trenton, NJ, under the mentorship of Elder Jerome Wilcox of Grace Cathedral that her preaching ministry blossomed. Often she was entrusted with the task of filling engagements for him when his busy schedule would not allow. Those opportunities expanded her career as an evangelist that included preaching, teaching and singing engagements throughout the nation and in the Caribbean. Ordained in 2000 by Christian Outreach of the Piedmont, she went forth in full time evangelism for over 25 years.

Returning to Whiteville in 1996, the talented teacher initiated an interdenominational Bible study at Friendship and later hosted the Bible study in her home. From these groups grew conferences for men, women, and youth as well as frequent 20-car caravan trips to conferences and services throughout the country. Pastor Troy remembers, “Many who came to those meetings and who took those trips were unsaved in the beginning, but as a result of them, became saved. That is what I am most thankful for.”

An architect’s rendering in the hallway of the church’s current building depicts Pastor Troy’s vision in detail. Appropriately named Victory Village, the drawing shows several facilities and amenities that Pastor Troy and her congregation are diligently forging into reality. She speaks excitedly and optimistically about the task she feels that she has been spiritually appointed to oversee.

“We have purchased approximately 40 acres of land where we will develop Victory Village consisting of a gymnatorium, which can be converted into a sanctuary, a site for seminars and workshops, and possibly a day care center,” Pastor Troy shares. She continues, “This facility will also house all types of community activities and will be considered our Victory Works Community Center.”

In April 2013, Victory in Jesus Church will celebrate its 10th anniversary. Along the way, services have been held in several “temporary locations called ‘tents’.”

Pastor Troy convincingly offers her motivation for such an ambitious project stating “a call from God, an assignment, a vision for community and regional empowerment.” The vision directed that such an effort is necessary to “raise the minds of the people economically, financially, physically, emotionally and most importantly spiritually.”

In response to a question about the location coming available by chance, Pastor Troy interrupted with, “I don’t think anything is by chance. I believe everything is orchestrated by a divine move of God. I prayed about land and that was the land the Lord directed us to. …I believe it’s going to be a regional development that through its excellence will draw people from near and far.”

Pastor concluded her comments with an explanation of how Jesus came to save mankind from sin and degradation and how the term “to save” in Greek is “sozo” which means to rescue or to deliver. She is confident that the development of Victory Village will accomplish the holistic vision of the Bible. She further concluded that God came to save mankind not only from spiritual sin but from economic wrongdoing, physical wrongdoing, and emotional wrongdoing; this holistic project will promote empowerment in each of those areas.

According to Pastor Troy, construction on the first phase of Victory Village will hopefully begin by spring 2014.

Robbing the cradle and running away. Sure they're cliche, but if these images leap EN GO to mind when you hear the THROUGH words "midlife crisis," IT TOO... you're not alone. The thing about cliches, though, are most are based on facts. In this case, the facts are staggering. More than half of respondents to a recent poll on Notmuch.com, a website produced by Wisconsin Public Radio, said that the midlife crisis is a "very real, gutwrenchingly depressing experience that we all go through at one time or another." Does this mean that the man in your life is suffering through a crisis of his own?

Not necessarily. For the approximately 10% of middle aged adults who go through an age-related midlife crisis, the condition is most common ranging from the ages of 40-60. Midlife crises last about 3–10 years in men and 2–5 years in women. A midlife crisis could be caused by aging itself, or aging in combination with changes, problems, or regrets over: work or career (or lack thereof), spousal relationships (or lack thereof), maturation of children (or lack thereof), aging or death of parents and physical changes associated with aging.

Midlife crises seem to affect men and women differently. An American cultural stereotype of a man going through a midlife crisis is that he buys a sports car.

Researchers have proposed that the triggers for midlife crisis differ between men and women, with male midlife crises more likely to be caused by work issues and female crises by personal evaluations of their roles.

Even though there are differences between why men and women go through a midlife crisis, the emotions they both encounter can be extremely frightening.

Dealing with a midlife crisis may take time and energy but it is important to understand that there are many coping skills that can help as well as lifestyle changes that can be made earlier in life. It is very important for a person to explore and share their feelings by either trusting a friend or seeing a therapist. A person in midlife needs to re-evaluate and think of what their life goals can be. continued p. 30

The body itself makes vitamin D when it is exposed to the sun. Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble secosteroids responsible for intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate. In humans, vitamin D is unique because it can be ingested as cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) or ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and because the body can also synthesize it (from cholesterol) when sun exposure is adequate (hence its nickname, the "sunshine vitamin").

Although vitamin D is commonly called a vitamin, it is not actually an essential dietary vitamin in the strict sense, as it can be synthesized in adequate amounts by most mammals exposed to sunlight (cats and dogs cannot synthesize vitamin D and must receive it in their diet). An organic chemical compound (or related set of compounds) is only scientifically called a vitamin when it cannot be synthesized in sufficient quantities by an organism, and must be obtained from their diet. However, as with other compounds commonly called vitamins, vitamin D was discovered in an effort to find the dietary substance that was lacking in a disease, namely, rickets, the childhood form of osteomalacia. Additionally, like other compounds called vitamins, in the developed world vitamin D is added to staple foods, such as milk, to avoid disease due to deficiency.

Measures of serum levels reflect endogenous synthesis from exposure to sunlight as well as intake from the diet, and it is believed that synthesis may contribute generally to the maintenance of adequate serum concentrations. The evidence indicates that the synthesis of vitamin D from sun exposure works in a feedback loop that prevents toxicity but, because of uncertainty about the cancer risk from sunlight, no recommendations are issued by the Institute of Medicine, USA, for the amount of sun exposure required to meet vitamin D requirements. Accordingly, the Dietary Reference Intakes for vitamin D assume that no synthesis occurs and that all of a person's vitamin D is from their diet, although that will rarely occur in practice.

In the liver vitamin D is converted to calcidiol, which is also known as calcifediol (INN), 25-hydroxycholecalciferol, or 25-hydroxyvitamin D— abbreviated 25(OH)D; and which is the specific

vitamin D metabolite that is measured in serum to determine a person's vitamin D status. Part of the calcidiol is converted by the kidneys to calcitriol, the biologically active form of vitamin D. Calcitriol circulates as a hormone in the blood, regulating the concentration of calcium and phosphate in the bloodstream and promoting the healthy growth and remodeling of bone. Calcidiol is also converted to calcitriol outside of the kidneys for other purposes, such as the proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis of cells; calcitriol also affects neuromuscular function and inflammation.

Beyond its use to prevent osteomalacia or rickets, the evidence for other health effects of vitamin D supplementation in the general population is inconsistent. The best evidence of benefit is for bone health and a decrease in mortality in elderly women.

Mortality Low blood levels of vitamin D are associated with increased mortality, and giving supplementary vitamin D3 to elderly women in institutional care seems to decrease the risk of death. Vitamin D2, alfacalcidol, and calcitriol do not appear to be effective. However, both an excess and a deficiency in vitamin D appear to cause abnormal functioning and premature aging. The relationship between serum calcidiol level and all-cause mortality is parabolic, Harm from vitamin D appears to occur at a lower vitamin D level in the black population than in the white population.

The pathways to peace are the stars.

The outcome of these moments however, are totally dependent on the choices we make and attitudes we have.

Have you ever noticed that when dark moments come is when you feel like you need God the most? Well you need Him all the time. Not just when in need and there is darkness or stars shinning, but ALL the time.

Darkness (sickness, death of a loved one, loss of a job, heartbreak, financial troubles, etc.) provides us the opportunity to start fresh…to make our stars shine.

“Stars can’t shine without darkness”, reminds me of this bible verse:

When we make an effort to create a better life than before, through conscious choices, then this dark moment (no matter how much it hurt) will be seen as a pivotal point for us…a chance where we can learn to appreciate love, life, health and money even more than we did before.

There’s always going to be dark moments, just hold on because joy will come. It may not be on your time, but God’s time.

Dark moments are stepping stones for a pathway to peace.

Let God Judge Allow God to be the judge and your life will go smoother. It was never my or your place to judge anyone. Find something better to do than sit around and talk about how people are and how they do things or how they look. Might I add, it causes drama. Drama is for the theaters or movies. Who wants trouble if it can be avoided? I prefer peace and joy. I must say it’s easy to get caught up in because most think everyone should think like we do. So, we judge others.

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then please slow down or don’t be selfish and give your child some time. God gave us our precious angels as a gift....and remember he may need his gift back sooner than later. We are never promised another day. None of us. Your child should be one of the most exciting people in your life. Of course we should put God first. Where is your child on the “totem pole”?

Speaking for myself, my child is the sunshine in my day (along with God, and my husband). I am excited to see him, always. Your children won’t stay small forever. Blink your eyes and he or she will be gone to college, on the streets, married, pregnant, having to work, in jail, or dead. Let me think...is there anything I missed. He or she may be at home longer than expected too.

My point is you don’t know what the future holds, but you can certainly give some love and guidance to help build your child’s future. Unfortunately, some children grow up and do the wrong things and make bad decisions in the process to fill the void the parent created.

If a child is not getting attention, love or guidance from his or her parents, he or she will go find it. You never know what they may find. Don’t create a void for your child to fill. What kind of decisions do you want your child to make?

Are you a parent who guides and loves your child or do you create emptiness?

It’s never too late to change. Fill the void now before your child does.

WILL THE REAL YOU PLEASE STAND UP Are you doing what your heart desires. Are you living your dream or the dream God has planned for you? Who do you want to be...really? Do you “just exist”? Most people do.

I have talked to many people who have the same job for the past 20 or 30 years. And to beat it all, many of them are not happy with what they do. In contrast, I have talked to several people who’s had 30 jobs and still don’t know what they want to do.

So, the question is “how many layers of skin does it take to get to the real you?” Well, who is the real you? Some people search for a lifetime and are never content with what they do and who they are. Are you that person?

If your answer is yes, then we need to talk. Or should I say, you and God need to talk. Either way, I feel strong that this message is from God, to me, and then to you.

Exercise and a good diet are also lifestyle decisions that can help. Most of all it is important to embrace midlife, and not fear it. By improving your lifestyle behaviors, many problems in life can be reversed. Physical activity can reduce an extreme amount of tension and reduces a good amount of stress one may be feeling. A balanced, nutritious meal plan is also important along with sleep and rest.

We only live on this earth once. Time is always ticking away. Don’t let fear hold you back from what God wants you to do. First you have to listen to Him. God is perfect! If He is talking to you and it’s really Him, then do it! Have faith! I am 34 and finally doing what I am supposed to do. Every day is not a bed of roses. It’s not going to be no matter what you do.

However, I am content. I lost my job and that door closed. God opened this one for me. I am happy and my family is much happier.

If my faith and relationship with God wasn’t strong, I would be doing the wrong thing again. I want to feel like I have purpose. I love to help people. It makes me feel like I am on cloud nine when I am able to help people in need. Just a few words can change a life. I finally after countless jobs, found the real me. Will you? It could be for a season or forever, but find the real you. WILL THE REAL YOU PLEASE STAND UP?

A psychotherapist can be helpful during a mid-life crisis because it provides an opportunity to enter the next step of your life with a greater awareness of who you were, who you are, and who you want to be. With the help of this therapist, one's issues and problems that have been building up can be worked on. Additionally, they will help you set up a plan to take the next step in your life without bringing up your negativity from the past.

There are also life changes that can be made early in life to prevent a midlife crisis. Susan Krauss Whitbourne found in her research that those who switched jobs earlier in life had a greater sense of generatively.

Dr. Prabha Chandra, a professor of psychiatry, believes that a midlife crisis can be prevented. It is recommended to treat it as a transitional phase. In other words, view it as an opening for new opportunities and positive growth.

Also, it can be beneficial to accept aging early. Mental preparation may reduce overwhelming feelings that lead to crisis. www.timewiselymagazine.com

Vitamin D continued Deficiency If you shun the sun, suffer from milk allergies, or adhere to a strict vegetarian diet, you may be at risk for vitamin D deficiency. Known as the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D is produced by the body in response to sunlight. It is also occurs naturally in a few foods including some fish, fish liver oils, and egg yolks and in fortified dairy and grain products.

Vitamin D is essential for strong bones because it helps the body use calcium from the diet. Traditionally, vitamin D deficiency has been associated with rickets, a disease in which the bone tissue doesn't properly mineralize, leading to soft bones and skeletal deformities. But increasingly, research is revealing the importance of vitamin D in protecting against a host of health problems.

Symptoms of bone pain and muscle weakness can mean you have a vitamin D deficiency. However, for many people, the symptoms are subtle. Yet even without symptoms, too little vitamin D can pose health risks. Low blood levels of the vitamin have been associated with the following: increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment in older adults, severe asthma in children and cancer.

Research suggests that vitamin D could play a role in the prevention and treatment of a number of different conditions, including type1 and type 2 diabetes, hypertension, glucose intolerance, and multiple sclerosis.

Vitamin D deficiency can occur for a number of reasons: you don't consume the recommended levels of the vitamin over time. This is likely if you follow a strict vegetarian diet, because most of the natural sources are animal-based, including fish and fish oils, egg yolks, cheese, fortified milk, and beef liver.

when your skin is exposed to sunlight, you may be at risk of deficiency if you are homebound, live in northern latitudes, wear long robes or head coverings for religious reasons, or have an occupation that prevents sun exposure.

You have dark skin. The pigment melanin reduces the skin's ability to make vitamin D in response to sunlight exposure. Some studies show that older adults with darker skin are at high risk of vitamin D deficiency.

Your kidneys cannot convert vitamin D to its active form. As people age their kidneys are less able to convert vitamin D to its active form, thus increasing their risk of vitamin D deficiency.

Your digestive tract cannot adequately absorb vitamin D. Certain medical problems, including Crohn's disease, cystic fibrosis, and celiac disease, can affect your intestine's ability to absorb vitamin D from the food you eat.

You are obese. Vitamin D is extracted from the blood by fat cells, altering its release into the circulation. People with a body mass index of 30 or greater often have low blood levels of vitamin D. The most accurate way to measure how much vitamin D is in your body is the 25-hydroxy vitamin D blood test. A level of 20 nanograms/milliliter to 50 ng/mL is considered adequate for healthy people. A level less than 12 ng/mL indicates vitamin D deficiency. Treatment for vitamin D deficiency involves getting more vitamin D -- through diet and supplements.
