Introduction This is a Ready-Ed Publications' book preview. “15 Minute Fillers” is an invaluable multi-purpose resource book containing quick ideas for relief and general classroom teachers. The activities are suited to students of middle and upper primary levels, integrating high interest content across key learning areas such as English, Mathematics, Science, Society and Environment/HSIE, the Arts and Technology. Detailed teachers’ notes and ideas are included, many with accompanying worksheets. Little preparation is necessary to implement the activities. The book can be used in many ways: • As a ready resource of activities for relief teachers; • As fast finisher or learning centre activities; • As rainy day or spare time activities for the classroom teacher; • As quick, fun, get-to-know you activities for the beginning of the year; • As a change of pace in a busy day. The book is not written to be used in any particular order, but rather as a “lucky dip” of ideas, sure to keep the entire class busy and on task in an enjoyable way. 1. Impromptu TTalks alks

Worksheet 1 (Page 22): “Pick-a-Topic” (Cut into pieces and place in container.)

Activity

Group children into pairs. Pull out a topic and announce it to the class. One child in each pair must talk about the topic for two minutes or until the teacher gives a signal. Then another topic is chosen and so on. This can be a noisy activity but a great way to get all children talking and interacting.

Variation •

Ask for volunteers to speak in front of the whole class. Give them time to jot down a few notes first. You may wish to give points or incentives for: ⇒ number of facts introduced on the topic; ⇒ expression; ⇒ eye contact; ⇒ speaking clearly; ⇒ pace and volume of voice; ⇒ standing tall.

Students can be asked to write about the topic instead. This is a great way to introduce note-taking and paragraphing: Give children a few minutes to think, talk about and jot a few notes about the topic. They then share their notes with a partner or small group, before organising their notes in some sort of logical order. E.g. If the topic was about soccer, students could organise their ideas into subheadings such as equipment, how to play, skills, famous players and teams. Set a time limit and insist on silence while the children are writing. Ask volunteers to read their writing or collect and keep as a writing sample.

Activity

Choose four children to secretly take out a small item from their bags or desks and place into the box, e.g. coin, keyring, eraser and so on. The teacher pulls out one of the items and shows it to the class. 6

Teaching Ideas

The four children stand at the front of the room and in turn, try to convince the class that the item in question belongs to him/her. Do the same for each of the four items. The class must then decide to whom each item belongs.

This activity can be done individually, with a partner or in a small group. Children are given the challenge of listing as many things as they can think of in a specific category. This activity is a useful vocabulary building exercise, especially at the beginning of a new unit of work or theme, and can be carried across as a homework task. Activity

This is a Ready-Ed Publications' book preview. Group children into pairs. One child takes a picture and takes care not to show it to the other. (Perhaps sit back to back or with a folder in between.) She/he then describes the picture slowly and in detail so that the partner can draw/copy it simply by listening and following instructions. Compare the finished drawing with the original picture. This is an engaging activity with some hilarious results. It really makes children think about the language they use and how clearly they are coming across.

5. W orld’s Hardest Spelling TTest est World’s Materials •

Activity

Tell the children you are going to give them a spelling test with just one word, however this word is one of the hardest words in the world. Select and write one of the following words on the board. •

sesquipedalian (14 letters) - a person who uses very long words;

•

electroencephalograph (21 letters) - a device which measures and records electrical activity of the brain;

•

antepenultimate (14 letters) - last but two;

•

Muttaburrasaurus (16 letters) - a dinosaur species found in Australia;

•

Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis (45 letters) - a lung disease;

•

floccinaucinihilipilification (29 letters) - an old fashioned word meaning to declare something as worthless;

•

Lake Cadibarrawirracanna (19 letters) - a lake in South Australia;

•

Ornithorhynchus anatinus (23 letters) - scientific name for the platypus.

Pronounce the word, break it up into smaller parts (syllables or words) and give its definition. Ask the children to say it out loud and then give them five minutes or so to learn it. Erase the word and then ask students to write it. You will be amazed at the ability of some children to memorise words of extraordinary lengths.

Activity

Draw lines as for Noughts and Crosses or use the worksheet provided. Ask children to write in any nine numbers from 1 to 50. Call out a variety of number facts, e.g. 5 + 8, 1/2 of 50, 7 x 3, 15 ÷ 5, double 20, 36 - 8. If children have the correct answer marked on their Bingo card, they cross it. First to cross all nine numbers calls out BINGO!

7. Life is a P acket of Jellybeans Packet Materials •

A large packet of jellybeans (or similar), a die, paper and pencil.

Activity

Tell the children that life is like a packet of jellybeans - some days you get your favourites and some days you don’t. Explain that today you’re going to play a game of chance. What happens will depend on the roll of the die. On the board, write the following for children to see: 1. Write the word jellybean ten times. 2. Draw a jellybean monster. 3. All the boys can eat a jellybean. 4. List all the jellybean colours. 5. All the girls can eat a jellybean. 6. List the names of ten types of lollies/desserts/chocolate. Discuss the probability of numbers being thrown and the chance of girls getting a jellybean compared to boys. Throw the die and let the game of chance begin. Students follow the instruction depending on the number that is rolled.

Variation •

Discuss and tally the favourite jellybean flavours of the class. Construct a bar graph to show the results. Pose the questions: “Which colour is most popular/ least popular/equally popular?” 9

Teaching Ideas

Tally the actual number of different coloured jellybeans in the bag and discuss the likelihood of pulling out a particular colour. Ask questions such as “Will I be more likely to pull out a red jellybean than a white one?” “Which colour has the greatest/least chance of being pulled out?” Test students’ predictions.

Here are some well known brainteasers that always prove to be a popular acitivity. Read the scenarios below. Students try to guess the answer. 1.

A man was found dead on an island. How did he die? You may only ask me questions where I can answer yes or no. (Answer - it was a traffic island and he’d been hit by a car.)

There’s a dead frog in the middle of a lilypad. To which side would he jump to get off - left or right? (Neither, the frog is dead.)

You are a pilot. In Brisbane 48 people board the plane. It travels to Sydney where another 24 people board. It continues to Melbourne where 33 people disembark. What colour are the pilot’s eyes? (Whatever colour your eyes are you are the pilot.)

A plane crashes into the left side of a mountain. There is a small town on the right and a lake at the foot of the mountain. Where will the survivors be buried? (Survivors are not buried.)

Everyday a woman who lives on the tenth floor of a building takes the lift down to the ground floor and every evening she takes the lift only to the sixth floor and she walks the rest of the way up. Why does she walk the final four floors? (She is only short and cannot reach the10th floor button.)

An electric train is travelling north-south. The wind is blowing from the north. In which direction will the smoke be trailing? (There is no smoke - the train is electric.)

20. Heads Down, Thumbs Up Activity

Children love this old favourite. Choose four children to stand at the front of the class. Everyone else is seated with their heads resting on their folded arms on the desk, eyes closed and thumbs up. The four at the front creep around the room and each tap a thumb. The four return to the front and those whose thumbs were tapped try to guess who it was that picked them. If they get it right, they swap with the person at the front. If wrong, the front person gets another turn.

21. Missing P erson Person Activity

One child is chosen to stand at the front with their back to the class. Another child is told to sneak outside the room and hide. The remainder of the class swap seats. The child at the front turns around and then tries to guess who is missing. They have three chances or a time limit of three minutes.

22. Memor y Challenge Memory

• 15-20 small items, e.g. odds and ends such as a peg, candle, brooch, shell, small toy, figurine, beads, key, bottle, photo, ticket, school supplies, etc. • Cloth

Activity

Display the items on a table or tray for one minute and then cover with the cloth. Ask children to recall and list as many items as possible. Discuss memory strategies, e.g. visualising the items in a row, visualising a strange creature holding the different items, or making up a story involving yourself using each of the items. As a follow-up creative writing task, ask children to write a story about one or more of the objects displayed. Include the object’s possible history, importance, special qualities and so on. Encourage students to make their story sound very convincing. For example: “This brooch belonged to my great, great grandmother. It was originally a gift from the King of Zukasistan given to her as a thank-you for saving his pet dog from drowning ...”.

One child is asked to leave the room. The remainder of the class make up a sentence around a chosen adjective, e.g. Intelligent - “Dolphins are one of the world’s most intelligent creatures.”

Write the sentence on the board replacing the adjective with boogie-woogie, e.g. “Dolphins are one of the world’s most boogie-woogie creatures.” The child comes back into the room and tries to guess what the adjective is. Alternatively, you may decide to build a sentence around a chosen noun or verb. You may wish to use other words as the replacement such as: gobbledygook, yadda yadda yadda, bread and butter, ping-pong, okey-dokey and so on.

35. Anyone For Pizza? Materials •

Activity

Discuss and list favourite pizza toppings. Children unjumble the letters to discover the pizza toppings and to find the mystery Italian food (macaroni). Other ideas include using the names of Italian pastas to make up an Italian song or advertisement: spaghetti, macaroni, fettuccini, tagliatelle, cannelloni, ravioli, lasagne, minestrone. Children can also design and name their own pizza topping.
