Activities for
Relief Teachers and Early Finishers
Activities for
Relief Teachers and Early Finishers The activities in this book are designed to be used as challenges for students between the ages of 11 and 13.
Ages 11-13 years
They can be used by relief teachers called into classes at short notice, by students who finish other sets of work early, or by those who enjoy learning independently.
Stimulating activities for use with students of 11 years +
Alternatively, teachers could use the activities as part of structured lessons in cases where they are relevant to the teaching program. However the range of activities is used, students will find them to be stimulating and challenging, and they will derive a good deal of satisfaction from successfully completing sets of work. The use of a dictionary or atlas will be necessary in many of the activities.

Deserts in the 3rd category are called cold winter deserts. These have a wide range of average temperatures between summer (38°C) and winter (-12°C). The 4th category deserts are called polar deserts. Nearly all their moisture is locked up in the form of ice. The _ _ _ _ _ _ is the world’s largest desert. It is 70% gravel and 30% sand and it

1. They eat cuttlefish and small fish, and can stay underwater for a long time without breathing.
5. This bird is found all over northern and eastern Australia as well as in New Guinea and southern Asia. 6. At times it will leave the water to graze on green plants on the bank of the river or lake where it lives. 8. This bird, which has a much shorter beak than the jabiru, also wades in the shallow water of swamps, lakes or streams hunting for fish, frogs, freshwater snails and insects. It also eats mice and birds. 7. It eats termites. 4. In the spring this bird travels south to nest on one of the islands near the Antarctic Circle. 7. This animal is also known as the banded ant eater. 3. The only place on the mainland where this animal is found is near Pingelly, but it is also found on Garden Island, in the Abrolhos and on islands near Esperance. 4. Its narrow and long wings make this bird a master glider on a fresh wind. 3. It does not need to live near a creek or lake because it can get enough moisture from the grass, leaves and shoots which it eats. 4. The female lays only one egg, which is placed in a grass lined cone of mud.
7. This animal was almost extinct a few years ago but seems to be recovering after assisted breeding programs. 4. It feeds mostly on fish and squid which it takes from just below the surface of the sea. 5. These birds stalk about quietly, seeking prey in shallows of salt water creeks or swamps. 1. They are related to whales. 2. It eats leaves, buds, fruit, flowers and food scraps. 6. These birds live in many parts of the southern two thirds of Australia. They are common in Western Australia but thrive in New Zealand where they were introduced many years ago. 3. This small animal is closely related to the quokka. 5. Mostly it eats fish but also takes crabs, frogs, reptiles, rodents and carrion. It jumps along with great strides and then grasps its prey with a rapid forward thrust of its bill. 1. This animal can often be seen playing gracefully in the sea or a river. 2. It can climb trees by digging its strong claws into the wood or bark. 7. Like the possum, it makes its home in a hollow log but sometimes it digs a burrow to breed.

Understanding What You Read Fat At The Flick Of A Switch
This is a Ready-Ed Publications' book preview. NEW technology is making most Australians fat and lazy, a new study has warned.
No longer do we have to get off the couch to change the channel, get out of the car to open the garage, wash dishes or even leave our chair to communicate with colleagues in the office, thanks to e-mail. It has got to the stage where movement is seen by many as a time wasting inconvenience. And it shows. The average male is 3.6 kg heavier now than 20 years ago and women have stacked on 4.8 kg. About two thirds of men and half of women are over-weight or obese, and diabetes has reached epidemic proportions. While hamburgers and fast food are often seen as the main cause of these problems, some experts believe that the development of computers is a far greater reason. From this study it seems that computers were mostly to blame for Australians expending 800 calories less a day (the equivalent of a ten to twelve kilometre walk) since 1980.
Walk, mow, swim or play your way to health
MODERATE intensity activity is good.
It must be enough to cause a slight but noticeable increase in breathing and heart rate, totalling no less than 30 minutes a day on most days, or doing 30 minutes continuously. Examples include brisk walking, mowing the lawn, digging the garden and medium paced swimming or cycling. The activity should be carried out for a minimum of about ten minutes at a time without stopping.
And the increase in effort-saving technology has coincided with busier lifestyles, compounding the problem.
Making a few changes in the daily routine can help. Examples are parking the car farther away from a destination and walking, walking up stairs instead of using the lift or escalator, or doing things by hand instead of using labour saving machines.
Exercise can be fun too, such as playing outdoor games with the children. Last but not least, think healthy at meal times.
Research, has laid down guidelines for staying healthy. The general thrust is - be active every day in as many ways as you can.
“We not only have less need to be active, but seem to have less time,” said an expert. “Now it is time to get moving again.” The report, prepared by the University of South Australia and the Tasmanian Centre for Health Promotion and

Oceans, Seas And Lakes
The mystery place, which is a man-made waterway, is known as the Panama Canal. Its construction started in the year 1880 and after being abandoned for about ten years was finally completed in the year 1914. The two bodies of water connected by the channel are the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Three sets of locks at either end lift ships to 26 metres above sea level.
The hottest ones are called subtropical. The Sahara is the world’s largest desert. 27.1

& 29.3 Australian Birds and Animals
Dolphin • This animal can often be seen playing gracefully in the sea or a river. • They are related to whales. • They eat cuttlefish and small fish, and can stay underwater for a long time without breathing. Possum • It can climb trees by digging its strong claws into the wood or bark. • It eats leaves, buds, fruit, flowers and food scraps. • This animal, which is active at night, makes its home in a hollow tree.
Go to www.readyed.net 60
Tammar • This small animal is closely related to the quokka. • It does not need to live near a creek or lake because it can get enough moisture from the grass, leaves and shoots which it eats. • The only place on the mainland where this animal is found is near Pingelly, but it is also found on garden island, in the Abrolhos and on islands near Esperance. Albatross • The female lays only one egg, which is placed in a grass lined cone of mud. • Its narrow and long wings make this bird a master glider on a fresh wind. • It feeds mostly on fish and squid which it takes from just below the surface of the sea. • In the spring this bird travels south to nest on one of the islands near the Antarctic Circle. • This bird spends most of its life at sea but they have to come to land to nest. Jabiru • Mostly it eats fish but also takes crabs, frogs, reptiles, rodents and carrion. It jumps along with great strides and then grasps its prey with a rapid forward thrust of its bill. • This bird is sometimes called the black-necked stork or the policeman bird. • These birds stalk about quietly, seeking prey in shallows of salt water creeks or swamps. • This bird is found all over northern and eastern Australia as well as in New Guinea and southern Asia. Black Swan • These birds live in many parts of the southern two thirds of Australia. They are common in Western Australia but thrive in New Zealand where they were introduced many years ago. • This bird feeds mainly below water, upending itself and using its long neck to reach towards the bottom and collect plants which grow there. • When nesting the male and female take turns to sit on the eggs. • At times it will leave the water to graze on green plants on the bank of the river or lake where it lives. Numbat • This animal was almost extinct a few years ago but seems to be recovering after assisted breeding programs. • This animal is also known as the banded ant eater. • Like the possum, it makes its home in a hollow log but sometimes it digs a burrow to breed. • It eats termites. Heron • This bird, which has a much shorter beak than the Jabiru, also wades in the shallow water of swamps, lakes or streams hunting for fish, frogs, freshwater snails and insects. It also eats mice and birds.
