This book, Community munity and Remembrance, Rem mbrance, is written for 8 to 9 year old d h are studying History and fin West Australian students who nding out about some Australian national symbols and things we celebrate. The book is divided into four sections: •

The first section gives you the chance to examine Indigenous Australians and to understand where they came from and why they place so much importance on country and place. You will study a local indigenous language group to help you understand and develop an appreciation of local indigenous culture.

The second section allows you to trace important changes in your local area, dating back to early colonial Australia. You will investigate local changes relating to work, transportation, education, parks and gardens and entertainment.

The third section is called Development and Character of the Local Community. The activity pages in this section have been designed to help you explore the cultural differences in your local area and to judge how different cultures have influenced the communities we live in with regard to religion, beliefs, architecture and festivals.

The fourth and final section of this book will allow you to look at the origins and importance of special days celebrated and recognised by all Australians, and explore local and national symbols and emblems.

The activities in this book are designed to help you learn more about your community and your country - we hope you enjoy finding out about them.
