Teachers’ Notes
This is a Ready-Ed Publications' book preview. Easy Read and Write is the second book in the Easy English Series for students learning English as a Second Language as well as Aboriginal students learning English as a Second Dialect, that is, students who are coming into the school system having little or no experience of English.
ESL/ESD learners need an explicit, methodical and planned language program that can be integrated into their class work in all key learning areas. It is important for the teacher to establish a supportive classroom environment where the student’s first language and culture are valued. This will nurture the student’s selfesteem and encourage him/her to gain confidence in the early stages of learning a new language. Use of cooperative learning strategies and peer tutoring will help the student build social friendships which are an integral part of developing language skills. It is important for the teacher to be aware that using short, positive sentences is best for the learner.
The teacher must provide time for the student to process statements and instructions and always check for the student’s understanding.
The teacher’s gestures and facial expressions plus visual clues (photos, pictures, objects, etc) will help the student make meaning. Regular and positive feedback from the teacher will consolidate the student’s sense of achievement and encourage the self confidence. Easy Read and Write (Book 2) builds on the thematic vocabulary introduced in Easy Words (Book 1). It contains six short stories based on familiar topics and vocabulary introduced in Book 1. Each double page features a story and activities based on the story to provide easy reference for the student and to build the student’s confidence and skills. Other books in the series focus on reading, writing, punctuation and grammar, text types and the skills of editing and proofreading.

When we got to Seacliff National Park we had a snack and a drink. Then we started our bushwalk. Koalas live in the tall gum trees but we didn’t see any for half an hour. We were all looking up to see if we could find one. Sam was walking in front of us on the path. He called out that there was a koala high up in the gum tree. We all looked. It was just a bump on the tree branch. We walked a bit further and then Maya saw two koalas high up in a tree. The big one was sitting up looking at us and eating gum leaves. The little one was sleeping.

Later on we saw a few more koalas. We also saw an echidna walk across the path. Maybe it was looking for some ants for its lunch. On the way back to the picnic area we saw white cockatoos and galahs. We ate lunch then walked back to the car. Maya was in front of everyone on the path. She stopped and yelled, “Snake!� Mr Hills ran to see if she was okay. When he looked for the snake he only saw a little brown branch on the path. We all laughed and Maya laughed too. We had a great day. Love from Lilly XX
