Teachers’ Notes Working With High Frequency Words - Book 4 is the final book in a series of four resources, which focuses on reading and spelling high frequency words. These resources have been created to complement an early years’ literacy program. The word lists have been specifically designed to meet the needs of students in their early years of schooling, but can also be used to provide additional support for older students. Each resource is a blend of the most frequently used words in the English language, words that often appear in early readers and words that early years students generally use in their personal recounts. These resources provide opportunities for students to learn new words and/or consolidate known words to aid word fluency.

ev

ie

w

Every book in the Working With High Frequency Words series contains worksheets which: • focus on high frequency words that students will be reading and writing in their early years of schooling; • include a set of flash cards that can be used to complement each list of high frequency words; • include Look, Say, Cover, Write pages to revise words learned; • follow a similar structure so that students can complete activities independently; • include two additional pages of varied activities to provide a challenge.

Pr

The activities in the series could be: • completed in a class literacy centre; • completed as part of a daily spelling program; • used to complement a regular spelling program for independent workers; • given as additional support activities to older students; • given as revision or assessment; • used as part of the class homework program; • used for individual tutoring.

Spelling List Flash Cards Below is a list of additional activities and games that could be completed using the flash cards in this book. • Laminate and use as a set of class flash cards. • Copy and staple together to create a flip book. • Reduce to a smaller size, laminate and hole punch. Place words on a curtain ring and hang in the classroom. Each time a list is complete add it to the curtain ring. This way the students can re-read all the lists when they have spare time in the classroom. • Photocopy two sets of words (1 white, 1 colour), students can stick the coloured word onto the page once they have demonstrated that they have learnt it. 4

Teachers’ Notes • Photocopy the alphabet activity onto A3 pieces of paper (List 1 - Activity 4) and instruct students to add words to the list each time they learn a new list. • Laminate the words in white and in another colour. Cut the coloured words out and put some blu tac on the back. Turn them face down. The student picks up a card, reads it and matches it to the word on the card. • Photocopy two or more sets of words to play matching games, snap, bingo or memory games.

Spelling List Activity Pages The first three pages in each list follow a similar structure to promote independence.

w

Say, Trace, Write And Line Them Up Students will read, trace, fill in word shapes and write individual list words. Students will identify, by circling, where individual words start and end.
