Pyriet of ijzerkies is een mineraal met als formule FeS2 (scheikundige naam: ijzerdisulfide). Het mineraal is een belangrijk ijzer- en zwavelerts. Het vormt vaak goed gevormde (euhedrische) kristallen in de vorm van een kubus met karakteristieke striaties en met een goudachtige glans. Het wordt ook wel klatergoud of gekkengoud (van het Engelse fool’s gold) genoemd omdat het soms voor goud aangezien werd. De naam kattengoud wordt soms ook ten onrechte gebruikt, dit slaat echter op gele mica of hars. Omdat pyriet in ruime mate voorkomt kan dit de illusie van grote rijkdom wekken. Echter, pyriet is niet zeer veel waard (alhoewel het wel verkocht kan worden). Het wordt gevonden samen met andere zwavelhoudende mineralen, maar ook met oxiden, in kwartsaders, in afzettingsgesteenten in koolbedden en als vervangingsmineraal in fossielen. Pyrite or Iron Pyrite is a mineral with the formula FeS2 (chemical name: iron disulphide). The mineral is an important iron and sulfur ester. It often forms well-formed (euhedric) crystals in the shape of a cube with characteristic striations and with a golden shine. It is also called tinsel or crazy men’s gold (from the English fool's gold) because it sometimes became gold. The name cat's gold is sometimes also used incorrectly, but it is a yellow mica or resin. Because pyrite occurs to a large extent, this can cause the illusion of great wealth. However, pyrite is not worth much (although it can be sold).
