TIM LIN Portfolio
The Power of Light I am deeply fascinated by the magic of light. It is not a tangible object but can provoke our emotions in a most intensive way. With the knowledge of optics and photonics, I am capable of manipulating the lights in mysterious ways. The art between light, shadow, objects and eventually the human mentality is what I am pursuing as my career.

A U R A A lamp that is inspired by the chromotherapy for a depressed mind. Light, in the form of specific colours, can energise one’s body and spirit. In this project, we tried to bring the natural sky lights into everyday life: Sunset glow, Rosy morning and Aurora skies.
Aura shines the environment with a random colour sequence. The gear system rotates birefringence crystal flakes slowly enough to create a soothing light transition. Every Aura lamp will have its own unique colour combination because of the natural orientation of the crystal.
Colouring: polarisation filter by calcite flakes Materials: Brass, Aluminium, Steel, Glass, Acrylic Revolution: <1 rpm

OPTICAL DRUG
(CONCEPTUAL PROTOTYPE)
Optical Drug is a clock using light beam as the indicator. Prisms are the actually moving parts to manipulate the light. The name Optical Drug comes from its hallucinogenic mode in whith the prisms do not deflect the light regularly but randomly disperse the element of light: colours as a artificial hallucinogen.

With some rough calculation based on the Snell’s Law, the light from the hour hand can be guided to any other angles around the clock as a minute hand with a set of 4 prisms.

While the time indication is not in demand, prisms can dance around in a random or preset order to creat the hallucination effect.
motif
A trackless curtain re-difines your space
Build your own compartment and create your own pattern in the same time. A trackless curtain and a ceiling scattered with coloured iron powders made up of motif. The central concept of motif is about free, light and reflection. In such a place we expect people to build their own motif in both senses of graphical and spatial.

SmartWindow SmartWindow consists of solar-powered electrochromic glass, a controller/powerbank on the window, coined as SmartHub and an App. SmartWindow is a product design assignment based on the PowerWindow technology of Physee. This is a course project done in a group of five. I was in charge of all the technical parts and the final prototype including the Arduino coding.

Through SmartWindow, office buildings will be capable of optimising the nature light input of working spaces. Such a solar absorption control would noticeably reduce the energy consumption of air-conditions in some warm countries. In addition, the whole SmartWindow system is self-contained, no further power from the grid is needed and will do no harm if the solar power is insufficient.

Future Plan As I am now building some last bricks of professions to be an industrial and lighting designer, I will take the courses of Lighting Design and other electives of interests in TU Delft in the coming semester. An internship will be the best arena for me to examine myself if I got all the academic knowledge I need. In addition to the knowledge and skills, I will proof myself with the great passion on lighting design.
