Part 1: Guessing Game Design

PART 1: Design Due at the beginning of week 6. You have been asked to create a game as a promotional piece. Your client has given you the description of how the game is played, but would like you to offer creative direction for the rest of it. You are expected to position the game so that it fits in with your client’s overall brand. The game is played by having the user guess a randomly chosen number, given a limited number of guesses and an overall time limit (see the technical part of the assignment for more information on the specifics of the game). The user either wins by guessing the number (you may choose to design a different “winning” screen depending on how quickly the user guessed) or loses by not guessing within the allotted number of guesses. He may also lose by not guessing within the time limit, so your design should have room for a timer to display dymanic information at all times. Other games may be substituted upon instructor approval. It is up to you not only to design the look of your elements (overall screen design, button details, typeface choice) to match your client’s

FINAL

established look and feel, but you should also illustrate the game concept in a way that fits in with the overall brand identity. For example, Old Navy’s current brand is represented by flashy colors, bold graphics, and a 70’s-80’s retro aesthetic. Your game, therefore, might have graphical details that resemble those of “The Dating Game,” with some reference to mysticism or slick disco personalities. If your client is the Army, then you might present the game as part of a covert spy operation in which the viewer’s correct guess will help provide information that can advance the troops towards enemy lines. If you choose buy-arock.com, then the game’s correct answer might correspond to a piece of jewelry that is revealed behind a curtain, TV-game show style. Please choose a client from the list below (if you have a different client in mind, please get instructor approval on it before moving ahead):

· maximumexp.com · goarmy.com · puma.com · nickelodeon.com · buyarock.com · fubu.com · acupuncturefootwear.com

Note: · Your file must be well-designed and include details that guide the user through the interactive elements. · You will be graded on the basis of design, concept, craft (sophistication of overall artwork), and technical success. · You are expected to push the limits of your skills and be ambitious. · You will be asked to present the final product of this project to the class during a critique session.

· altoids.com · espn.com · apple.com · oldnavy.com · orbitz.com · macromedia.com

Part 2: Guessing Game Technical Prototype

PART 2: Technical Due at the beginning of week 8, as a fully functioning prototpye. Game description: the user must guess a number from 1 to 100 by either entering it into a text input field or by clicking on a number presented in some other type of interface. The rules of the game are shown below:

FINAL

· The user can only enter one guess at a time. · The user is limited to 6 guesses before the game ends. · The game must give the user a hint as to whether his guess is too high or two low . · The game must inform the user if his most recent guess is a winning one. · The game must inform the user that he has lost if all the guesses are up. · Bonus: Include an overall time limit in which the number has to be guessed (use getTimer()).

Note: · Your file must work properly; that is, the output window should show no errors. · Clean up your code so that extraneous elements (like trace actions or unused variables) are deleted. · Print out your code for back-up purposes. You will need to submit your code in a digital format via the submissions link and dropbox.

Name your file: yName_tech.fla, yName_design.fla and yName_tech.swf, yName_design.fla with “y” indicating the first letter of your first name and “name” indicating your last name. (In other words, jSmith_tech.fla). The “tech” refers to this as the technical portion of Assignment 2 for ITGM709.

Remember to: · Think about your audience! · Organize information based on a hierarchy of importance. · Keep the style of your graphics and gestures consistent—it should look like one coherent piece. · Keep the file size as small as possible by reusing elements.

Founding Year Guessing Game

Learning about all 37 hospitals when joining Adventist Health System can be overwhelming. Every year interns and residents are thrown into the environment and expected to know all sorts of information about each facility. A quiz game is a fun way to learn and an excellent method to retain information. While the dates each facility were founded are not the most important data on the screen it gives the user a mental link to the rest of the information. Platform: Flash (with AS3) for Mac/PC The Game Module would eventually be added to the Resident Information web page.

Target Audience: Summer interns and Leadership Development residents are the most curious and desperate for the information as they are expected to know all about the system in a short time period. They might also want to use it as a tool to brush up on the company before the interview Media Choices: The AHS website supports Flash which will be placed either in a pop-up window which would allow the dimensions to be larger (960px x 600px), or within the confines of the site which would be 680px x 480px.

Project Goals: To design and develop a guessing game that will assist interns and residents to learn about Adventist Health System’s hospitals.

Personas: Sara is a business major looking for a summer internship. She’s heard from friends about Adventist Health System and is curious to learn more about what it might be like. After applying she is doing her best to be prepared for the recruiter’s interview. Looking through 37 hospital pages is okay the first go round but they all start to mesh together after awhile. The “Founding Year Guessing Game” is just what she needs to quiz herself on the materials. Joseph has joined the leadership program but still has much to learn about Adventist Health System. He attends conferences and sees faces but is having trouble associating them with correct facilities and locations. The leadership development director points Joseph to the website as a challenge to get caught up to speed before the next big conference: confidence is crucial in the first handsshake.
