COURSE OVERVIEW

Study interior design with us and you will be exposed to great diversity in the design and production of sustainable, energy-efficient and functionally and aesthetically pleasing environments. You will be taught by a team of practising interior designers and CAD experts, supported by visiting architects and engineers. So if you’re interested in making a difference to the future, by studying sustainable interiors and environments, then this course is definitely for you. Is this the course for you? If you are interested in making a difference for the future, by studying about sustainable interiors and environments, then this course is definitely for you. We welcome applications from students who are returning to education. We offer many opportunities for adults, even if you don’t have conventional entry qualifications. We’re interested in your motivation, your potential, and your ideas about changing careers - many mature students have succeeded in this in the past. The course has strong links with partner colleges in the EU. Students participate in the College’s Group for International Design Education (GIDE) project, and can take part in the Erasmus student exchange.

Grading is by 95% continuous assessment (at the end of each module) and 5% by examination.

HE, three years, full-time, day-time (validated by Open University)

Site visits and competitions are integrated into your first and second year, depending on availability and relevance. There is the opportunity for a one-month work placement at the end of your second year, for which the Personal and Professional Development module prepares you. Our dedicated design studios are well-equipped with networked computers and individual workstations running the latest versions of industry-standard software. Colour scanning, plotting and printing facilities are available, together with a CNC lasercutter for model-making. We offer a residential visit to a major city (usually London) in your first year, and an overseas trip during your second year. Previous destinations have included Milan, Prague, Berlin and New York. Recent graduates have progressed into a variety of careers in interior design: some are now CAD visualisers, or work in film and TV, exhibitions, museums and art installations. Others have gone on to work within design consultancies and architectural practices in the UK and overseas, including Beijing, Dubai and Singapore; some have set up their own design businesses; and some work freelance. A number of students go on to postgraduate study.

04 / 05

The major challenge facing interior designers today, which will only intensify in the future, is to ensure that the design and construction of their concepts are sustainable.

The ‘Seat for Shine’ project was a live competition brief to design seating for a business and community centre in the under-priveleged area of Harehills, Leeds. Greg Austin’s submission was designed to bring an element of play to an otherwise very business-orientated interior. The designs play with peoples’ perceptions of materials and form, suggesting un-balance and encouraging interaction from the user. The competition requested mock-up designs, and here the collection represents designs at differing levels of completion, from the almost finalised light and concrete stool to the under-development seating and low table. Winner of the GIDE (Group for International Design Education) design prize for Leeds College of Art, held in Lugano, Switzerland

CASE STUDY 01

LEEDS COLLEGE OF ART - INTERIOR DESIGN 2008 / 2011

Louise Boreham

“I am now working freelance but along side an architectural company in Latvia, designing an 800 capacity nightclub/venue in the capital city Riga. Riga is a beautiful city with a lot of history and the building that I am working with is in an area that is part of a larger regeneration project, this area is being hailed as being a new cultural centre for the city. The building itself was originally a 19c grain storehouse and is situated right next to the Daugava river that runs though the city. It is beautiful, with thick walls and wooden beams throughout, it seems a little like the architectural equivalent of a tank, definitely built to last. “ “For my brief I was told that the young people of Latvia like extreme sports and so that is the line that I have gone down with my research, I have been very lucky with the building though and so all of my additions are functional but decorative, and simple so they don’t overpower the building itself. I have attached a few images of the building for you to have a look at.” “The rules with this kind of historical building are, that you have to get a red stamp on everything before you even think of making any changes. I would expect the club to be open in June or July 2008 as we are hoping to catch as much of the summer season as possible. “ “As the completion date set by the architects was later than the owner expected, he had me work on a smaller re-decoration job on a bar fairly close to the club. This was completed a couple of months ago and I am pleased to say that everyone seems very happy with what I did to it and it is attracting quite a lot of custom. “

“I also had a nice surprise this year at the 100% design exhibition when I went to the Chair Baltic stand and found that they were using my bar design as an example of how one of their products could be used in a space. The lady on the stand said that she loves it in there and often pops in for a drink, as you can imagine I was very very chuffed with that. I am also attaching a few images of the bar before and after for you to look at.” “Although the club is not open, we do have a website and we have already held a small documentary festival there this summer which went very well, there is a surrounding pedestrian area and an underpass tunnel which leads out to the side of the river so when the weather is good we can hold events there with a capacity of over 2000. The web address is www. speakers.lv , the club is named Speakers as its name is very close to the original Latvian name for the type of warehouse that it is. “ “As you can tell I am very excited about these projects and could not have turned down this opportunity and it will look good on my CV. I was hoping to get a job here in England when I finish though the guy I am working for is already suggesting other projects that I could work on, so my future could hold a few more surprises and you never know what might happen next.”

“I have just enrolled onto the final year of the architecture course at Lincoln University part time.” “When I graduated I went back to the company where I did my year out (Lewis and Hickey, for 6 months before moving on to Cambridge where I worked at RMJM for 12 months! This was a very interesting time with very high profile projects and bids. Since then I have moved back to Newark where I bought a house and started at a firm called RPS burks green where I have been ever since! They’re sending me back to university 1 day a week in the hope I’ll eventually become an architect!!” “I can’t stress enough how much the course helped me start to fulfil my ambitions (and the wages are good too!)

Clare participated in the Erasmus Exchange programme with a three-month placement in Breda, Netherlands. The university at Breda is one of six European centres that make up the GIDE network, where students get involved in a common design project running simultaneously within each of the design courses at the same time in the academic year (Sep-Dec). Students’ work is selected for an international exhibition at one of the universities every year, in February.

“It’s been great out here, been really interesting to see the diverse designs from students that are not all based around Interiors. All the tutors and students have been friendly and had some fantastic experiences from the places we have visited, I will be sad to leave. I feel it’s benefited my work greatly too.”
