How does brand identity affect consumerism?
Dissertation Tutor Rationale
Gary Barker
I want to work on a wide range of different projects that would lead to a range print driven outcomes, allowing me to develop my type, layout and producing professional work that I like and enjoy working on. I aim to work on research driven projects for high-end lifestyle, cultural and commercial sectors, developing a range of printed portfolio pieces that explore print processes and typography.
Statement of Intent To achieve my goals, I have written a set of proposed briefs that gives me the opportunity to improve my design skills as well as developing more work towards my portfolio. Rather than just focusing on finished outcomes, I want to develop my design process as a whole, therefore the briefs written all vary in subject matters, time scale, requirements etc which should hopefully challenge my design practice.
I would also aim to continue networking with individual designers, design studios and other creatives, developing my professional practice and taking my portfolio to a few more design studios that I aspire to work experience, hopefully winning myself a placement during the course, which I believe would improve and help shape the direction that I would like to head after the course.
2.
Brief 1 Leeds College of Art Rebrand & Catalogue design
A short and relatively straightforward brief that I hope would kick start my design practice during the first few weeks of this year. I just wanted to start designing, and develop my type & layout skills while incorporating my interest in printed outcomes, therefore have written a brief that has predefined tones, target audience and content for me to experiment with.
3.
Brief 02 Lego
A brief that requires me to develop a campaign to promote Lego, making it one of the top selling toys again. In comparison to the 1st brief, this is a lot more open ended, which should allow me to experiment and develop a range of different concepts and solutions. It also offers the opportunity to develop a range of different solutions that run across both print and digital formats.
4.
Brief 3 Promoting Dimsum
A research driven brief that requires me to develop a brand identity for a restaurant as well as promotional materials that inform people about Dimsum. A relatively open brief in terms of the range of outcomes I can develop, that centres around a serious, sophisticated and realistic subject matter that I am interested in myself. I think the brief itself is good, the aim of promoting something new is something that I want to explore within design, it also gives me the chance to play around with Chinese characters as a form of layout/typography, which should be a challenge
5.
Brief 4 Living Space
Another relatively realistic brief that requires me to rebrand and develop a range of materials for an interior venue. I want to produce work for a range of different ‘clients’, and so far I haven’t produced work for a more high end / luxury sector. My intentions when writing this brief was that I could produce work that wouldn’t have to compromise on print finish/ quality, therefore this brief gives me the chance to develop strong finish, professional looking outcomes. I also want to look into a completely unfamiliar sector – design for interior/ retail, which this brief caters for.
