Local kids take home top awards at fair

The Santiam Canyon kids, backed by strong adult leadership, shone brightly at the Linn County fair last week in Albany. 4-H clubs such as the Diamond Back Clovers, representing young herdsmen, equestrians

and farmers from Mill City, Gates, Lyons Mehama, Scio and Stayton provide a nurturing learning environment that will benefit our kids for a lifetime. Amber Tinney of Lyons is the group leader for the Diamond Back Clovers, with 34 participants in all. “Our kids did Pictured above: Braydon Mizell showing his well bred swine. Fatal crash on McCully Mtn kills one, injures two Alcohol, excessive speed appear to be factors that led to crash down steep embankment, trapping occupants

A single vehicle crash on McCully Mountain in Lyons claimed the life of Jeremy William Pierce and injured two others, officials said. On July 19, a little after 8pm, a caller to 911 reported hearing a loud crash and someone screaming for help on West McCully Mountain Road. When the caller investigated further, he discovered a severely damaged 2001 Chevrolet pickup had crashed into a large tree, about 30 feet down a steep embankment. Three people were trapped inside the pickup. Alcohol, excessive speed and reckless driving appear to be factors in the crash. Pierce, 25, of Lyons (the owner and driver of the pickup) was found deceased and trapped in the driver seat. Skye Maley, 23, of Mill City, was trapped in the right front passenger seat and Samantha Letterman, 20, of Lyons, was trapped in the back seat of the

extra cab portion of the pickup. Rescue crews worked for well over an hour to extricate the injured occupants. Lyons Rural Fire Protection District (LRFPD) responded to the crash, calling in other agencies for help due to the extremely steep embankment. The loosely soiled terrain made it difficult to access the vehicle safely and hampered the removal of the patients, according to LRFPD Captain Bob Bivans. The deceased driver, William Pierce, was not wearing a seat belt and the driver’s side airbag had not deployed. The right front passenger, Skye Maley, was transported by ambulance to Santiam Memorial Hospital in Stayton with serious nonlife threatening injuries. Maley was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash and the front passenger side airbag had deployed. The rear seat passenger, Samantha Letter-

man, was transported by ambulance to the Mari-Linn School, where she was transported by REACH helicopter to Salem Memorial hospital with serious non-life threatening injuries. Letterman was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. Fire and EMS crews from Lyons, Sublimity, Stayton, and Santiam Ambulance responded to the scene. Linn County Sheriff’s deputies were assisted by members of the Albany Police Department working as part of Linn County Major Accident Investigation Team. West McCully Mountain Road was closed for four hours during the investigation. A Shiatsu dog owned by Pierce’s mother was also in the pickup at the time of the crash and was found in the area. Linn County Deputies arranged for the return of the dog to its owner. Pierce’s body was taken to Weddle Funeral Home in Stayton. 1

Volunteers and staff work together at Gates School to get the job done! A HUGE THANK YOU to the over 30 volunteers who came out to help move the contents of classrooms from Gates Elementary campus to the new Santiam Elementary School! Because of all your help, we were able to move about 90% of the contents of 10 classrooms to their new homes in Mill City in less than 5 hours!! Without your help, this is a chore that would easily have taken the custodial staff at least a week to accomplish. We know how valuable your time is, and we appreciate it SO MUCH! Next up...moving the playground equipment. This project is starting today, Wednesday, July 25 at 9 am and will last at least all day long. Bring heavy rakes and shovels for moving barkchips. Be prepared to twist wrenches and sort nuts and bolts. Dismantle will be very detailed, as each piece has to be labeled when it’s taken apart. The nuts and bolts are all different, so have to be sorted as they’re removed. There will be further work days available soon with dates and time to be an-

Fourteen agriculture students, under the guidance of advisor Nichole Scholz, participated and took home many top ranking awards. “I’m proud beyond words,” said Mrs. Scholz, who will be departing Santiam this year to relocate to a teaching position in Madras. While her students were in the ring showing their pigs she recalls, “The swine judge says ‘this may be a novice class but you can tell that they all have a strong 4-H background and are all excellent showmen’ but, nope they are just all from Santiam! Little does he know it’s their first time showing any kind of livestock. Moments like this make me so proud of my students and of being an educator.” Students of Mrs.Scholz expressed deep sorrow in losing their mentor. “I would have to say that Mrs.Scholz is a selfless person. She was an all around great person and teacher who will be greatly missed,” said Natazha Howard, recent Santiam graduate and one of 110 Santiam FFA members. Local students didn’t limit themselves to agricultural pursuits either. Cora Nordmo, another recent Santiam graduate not only showed chickens, and rabbits, and sold market rabbits, she also won Champion Egg Showman and got first for Herdsmanship AND earned a Citizenship award. Cora (center below) also took home top awards for her photography as seen here. Her shot of friend Chris Esman doing a back flip into the river won rights to be shown at the upcoming Oregon State Fair. The photo of the pretty pup below won a blue ribbon as well. Regis High to host 27th annual golf tournament on August 11

Regis High School will host the 27th annual Ram Open Golf Tournament at the Santiam Golf Course in Aumsville on August 11. The tournament is a four person scramble; Regis is accepting registration forms through August. 6. The tournament begins with a shotgun start at 8:30am; participants are asked to arrive by 8am. Lunch and awards will be provided. The tournament includes mulligans for sale 4

at $5 per mulligan with a maximum of two per player. Prizes include hole prizes, place payouts and random prizes. “The Regis Athletic Association (RAA) started coordinating this event last year, so the funds for the tournament go toward Regis High School athletic programs,” says the president of the RAA Tim Sherman, whose daughter attends Regis High School. “What Regis hangs their hat on is the fact that we

don’t require kids to have to pay to play sports. That is what the Association is for, to raise those funds so that families don’t have to worry about additional costs. It also helps the school out so that the school does not have to fund these program costs; therefore helping to keep the cost of tuition down.” The Ram Open entry fee is $65 for all golfers. Bill Sanderson’s River Report July 25, 2012 503-897-3301 The North Santiam is one of the most beautiful whitewater rivers in the Willamette Valley and beyond! Experienced raft travelers last week confirmed that the balance of whitewater, tranquility. mountain geography down to Mill City, foothill geography down to Mehama, and valley/farm geography down to the Willamette River is a well balanced mix of experience for scenic passengers and anglers alike. Some local people are aware of the treasure in the center of the canyon, and many are not. We will continue taking folks down the river until everyone knows what we have here. People who have only seen the area from Highway 22 are shocked to see the beauty and the solitude of the river corridor. Sometimes they are also shocked to see the fish and game living here. Many heavy rapids extend from Packsaddle Park through Mill City, and Spencer’s Hole is the most notorious. It is about a mile below the Gates Bridge and is the fourth rapids in the gorge section. At this particular river level it is somewhat awkward. The is an underwater ledge that comes out from the North Bank to the middle of the river. If boats go over the middle of the ledge, it is possible to hang up on an underwater rock just below the ledge. It is also possible to shoot straight through. If boats start a little

Steelhead and salmon are comfortable up at Packsaddle and Minto parks most of the day now, and some of them drop back down the river to get in warmer water for part of the day, and then return upstream. Eagles, osprey and other birds seem to know where the fish are. Serious anglers are also able to find the hiding spots. Funds available for forest projects under county payments program Noxious weed removal, road improvements, others may qualify; deadline for proposals is August 3

The public is invited to propose projects to be funded under provisions of Title II of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self Determination Act. For Fiscal Year 2013, proposals should be submitted electronically or postmarked by August 3, 5pm. The legislation encourages individuals, non-profit organizations, local governments and others to propose projects that restore watersheds, decommission or maintain roads, remove noxious weeds, thin tree stands, or otherwise improve the condition of the Forests. The proposed projects need not be implemented on Forest Service lands, but must benefit National Forest resources. More information about the revised legislation can be found at http:// www.fs.fed.us/srs/. Applications and instructions for Title II proposals, as well as past examples of Payments-toCounties funded projects can be found online atwww.fs.usda.gov/ goto/willamette/rac. Applications should be submitted electronically to Connie Athman, Designated Federal Official, via email at cathman@fs.fed.us. If email is not available, project

submissions can be mailed to the Mt. Hood National Forest at 16400 Champion Way, Sandy, OR 97055. Mailed proposals must be postmarked by August 3, 5pm. These funds are made available by Clackamas, Douglas, Hood River, Lane, Linn, Marion, Multnomah, and Wasco counties, which receive federal funds based on the percentage of land in federal ownership. Title II project proposals are reviewed by the 15 members of the public that comprise the HoodWillamette Resource Advisory Committee (RAC). The RAC then makes recommendations about the proposals to the Willamette or Mt. Hood National Forest Forest Supervisor. The RAC made recommendations on 62 projects totaling $1.65 million in fiscal year 2012. There will be approximately $1.57 million available to fund 2013 projects. Project proponents for RAC recommended projects will be asked to complete additional forms required by the Federal Financial Assistance Grant/Cooperative Agreement process to be able to receive funds. For more information please call Connie Athman at 503-668-1672.

Saturday Faire gets ready for next event on August 4

Local vendors welcome at new Mehama location

Press Release: The second of three Cascade Foothills Saturday Faires for the summer of 2012 is fast approaching. The faire will be held on Saturday, August 4th in Mehama along Highway 22 at 11227 Grove Street on the grounds of the Odds and Ends Antiques and Collectibles property, formerly the Branch Equipment Company and is one block west of the flashing yellow traffic light. The first faire opened in the summer of 2008 and was located in Gates, in a wide grassy area next to Highway 22. It has run there every summer since. The faires typically operate once a month during the summer and have traditionally been scheduled for the first Saturday of the month. Responding to concerns of disrupting winds along the open highway, the faire has been moved to Mehama for 2012, is in a more protected area and there is no wind problem. Fair activities include vendor and information booths and the wildly popular circus entertainer, Chris Corrado. Chris will be onsite from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the faire will be open for business from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. The Cascade Foothills Saturday Faire provides a place for local activity provider, artisans, crafters, produce growers, and non-profit organizations to make their products available while shoppers can explore the many offerings available as well as meet and socialize. Sponsorship of the Faire this summer is by Santiam Hearts to Arts and proceeds from vendor space rents go back to the community in the form of programs and activities designed to improve arts and cultural opportunities for our Santiam Canyon communities. We are continually looking for new vendors with a focus on hand crafts and locally grown produce. Fine artist have found the venue exceptional as well. In August you can expect to find local produce, handmade furntiture, jewelery, and gifts, tie dye, doggie treats, people treats and facepainting as well. Come join the fun. The faire is managed by Joyce Trout of Mill City. She can be contacted at (503) 897-3116 or oilandsaws@gmail.com.

Commissioners meet locally to hear resident concerns

Marion County Commissioners made a special trip out to the Santiam Canyon on July 11 to talk about how they can help those in the eastern wing of the county. Commissioners Sam Brentano, Janet Carlson and Patti Milne first held their regular business meeting at Gates Fire Hall, then hosted a roundtable style discussion at the Detroit Ranger Station later that afternoon. Both meetings gave locals a chance to talk about issues like safety, roads, schools, recreation and the local economy. The morning meeting was attended by many community leaders, including Gary Swanson, Gates Fire Chief, whose main concern was helping the Idanha/ Detroit Fire District become selfsustaining. “(There) really is no real community fire protection for the citizens of Detroit unless other agencies respond,” said Swanson. “This places a financial burden on the rest of the communities.” Others attended the morning meeting, like Allison McKenzie from GROW North Santiam who said that she has seen an increase in businesses looking for staff. And Mill City teacher Debbie Fawcett spoke about the ongoing school cuts. “We find ourselves, as educators, becoming grant writers....We see people now headed out of the canyon because 16
