HOW IT WORKS... Typical Sprinkler Installation
The Platypus Sprinkler system is designed for maximum protection from ember attack on residential, commercial or public assets in the event of a bushfire or wildfire.
*Sprinklers shown larger than actual size
The twin outlet head of the Platypus bushfire sprinkler spins in a full circle spraying water out and downwards. Its unique design has eliminated the need for an outer support frame around the spinner which has the effect of breaking the water spray into smaller droplets which is not ideal. Sprinkler heads are typically mounted around the perimeter of the dwelling in line with the top edge of the spouting and can also be fitted to the ridgeline. Water from the sprinklers keeps accumulated debris in gutters wet and a curtain of water ensures that embers blown in by wind are met with water. Water flow under pressure from a pump* is forced from the dual outlet spinner in a 360째 spray pattern. Because water is placed between the fire and the building any wind driven flame or ember will be dampened. You will often see a fireman advance on a fire with his hose spraying in a wide pattern to protect him from the radiant heat. The Platypus bushfire sprinkler works in much the same way.
Frequently asked questions Commonly asked questions and answers on bushfire protection and the Platypus bushfire sprinkler system. Can I re-fit my existing sprinkler system with the Platypus bushfire sprinkler system? Yes, as long as you stay within the recommended spacing. Does the Platypus bushfire sprinkler system need to be fitted during the initial build? Or can it be added to a new renovation later? The system is very flexible and as such can be installed during the initial construction phase or it can be easily retro-fitted to existing buildings. How is it different from the current bushfire sprinklers on the market? The outer support frame on other sprinkler types breaks water passing through the sprinkler head into smaller droplets. Smaller droplets of water are less effective in restricting or stopping ember attack than larger water droplets. How is the Platypus bushfire system activated? The platypus Sprinkler system is normally activated manually. It can also be set up to be triggered by smoke detectors or heat sensors or can be activated remotely by a mobile phone. There can be quite intense winds during a fire, how does the Platypus bushfire sprinkler system combat this and still spray downwards? A flatter sprinkler head design, lower operating pressure and the quantity of larger sized droplets due to elimination of an outer support frame all combine to encourage downward water spray. How much water does a Platypus bushfire sprinkler use? Each sprinkler uses approximately 6 lpm(liters per minute) with the standard size nozzle. An average sized home with perimeter and ridge line sprinklers installed would use approx 11,000 lph (liters per hour) with approximately 60 percent of the water re-used in some installations.
