Foreword When any war conflict arose the government would draft people to fight for their country. Drafting would be random and would be chosen on based on birthdates. By law men from age 18 26 must register to enter the draft. People drafted for this will be part of the ‘Vietnam War’. ⅔ men were drafted for this war. The American military was not defeated and by military standpoint it was an unknown performance.

Story

ESTABLISHED 1856 SINCE 1611

I arrived at my high school office, ready to hand them my registration envelope. The letter contained my name, age, address, and more, but most importantly my birthdate. 3

After heading home I thought about what would happen if I were chosen to be drafted. What it would mean to me and everyone else around me. Well, only time would tell if I was drafted or not. 4

Finally with a newspaper in my hands, I searched for my lottery number, thinking back to when I first registered for it. A few months ago, I’m sure. I hoped my number would be high up from 1. Scanning the paper, not finding my number.

5

Knowing that if I was drafted, I would have to leave home, Lancaster Catholic High school. I would have to leave life as I know it and fight in the war, surrounded by death, fighting, actual war. I kept scanning the page, but I found nothing 6

Draft Results 1 50 100 150 200 250 300 350 400

I kept wondering who’ll be drafted? Who will get to wait? Flipping through the papers in hand, I had reached number 100 and there was still no sign of my birth date at 150. At least I know that there is an extremely low chance of being drafted by now. But what number was I? 200, 237, 290. Nothing... Where could my number be?

300, 330, 341, 344 then, 345. There it was, My birth date. February 17th, 1951, right next to number 345. I let out a sigh. Feeling a grin on my face I sat back and relaxed.
