HARTFORD MARINA
NEW PONTOONS
It was an exciting October for Hartford Marina, as brandnew pontoon fingers were installed. The team are thrilled that with this extra space now available, they’ll be able to welcome even more boat lovers to their thriving community in Huntingdonshire. With moorings available for river and canal boats of all sizes, there really is space for everyone and anyone who’s ready to explore the River Great Ouse and beyond. The friendly team are always on hand to ensure that berth holders can enjoy the pleasures of the waterside lifestyle, safe in the knowledge that they’re receiving the best possible service.
CRICK BOAT SHOW A fantastic weekend was had by all at the Crick Boat Show this August, as the event moved to a later date in the calendar. Showcasing a 60’ x 12’06’’ Viking Canal Boat, it was a pleasure to finally get back out and see everyone. With two cabins, a wet room, large saloon and spacious galley it’s no surprise that this beautifully crafted widebeam was extremely well received by visitors to the stand. We’re pleased to say that as a result of the show we have a number of happy customers and are now taking orders for August 2022 delivery. Starting from £170,000 ex VAT these luxury canal boats are a cost effective and liberating alternative to apartment living. Visit www. tingdeneboatsales.net for more details. 04

DEFIBRILLATORS Did you know that every Tingdene Marina is now fitted with a defibrillator? These bright yellow boxes are home to devices which give a high energy electric shock to the heart of someone who is in cardiac arrest. You don’t need to be trained to use a defibrillator – anyone can use it in an emergency! We are however looking to carry out first aid courses for berth holders in the new year.

BROADLANDS MARINA
NEW AND IMPROVED We’re delighted to announce that planning permission for a brand-new office and facilities block at Broadlands Marina has been granted and work will commence in the new year. For any berth holders who may be interested, the plans for the new development are currently on display in the office. Alongside these facility improvements, dredging of the Marina will also continue. As this takes place, the dredged material will be pumped into the reedbed areas. The Broads is renowned for its biodiversity and is home to more than a quarter of the rarest wildlife in the UK. This area between the Marina and land is the perfect habitat for a multitude of wildlife species and as such, is one we’re keen to preserve and nurture. www.tingdene-marinas.co.uk

RIVER THAMES T
RECONNAISSANCE
he River Thames runs through some of the prettiest towns and villages in the Home Counties. For the most part, the immediate riverside remains unspoiled. It is home to over 25 species of coarse fish and boasts three areas of outstanding natural beauty. It has 45 locks and is the only river in Europe to have a national trail follow its entire length.
At 215 miles, the Thames is the second longest river in the UK, running from the Thames Estuary, to the River Severn (which is the longest). The source of the river is a group of springs that lie north of the village of Kemble in Gloucestershire. It flows through or alongside several towns, including Windsor, Walton, Henley-on-Thames and Marlow, before flowing into the Greater London area and eventually out to the North Sea. Because it is mostly flat and the scenery is stunning, the Thames is the perfect location for riverside walks or cycling. The national trail provides a footpath that runs for 180 miles, which runs from the Thames Flood Barrier at Woolwich to the banks of the Thames in Kemble, Gloucestershire.
ACTIVITIES ALONG THE WAY On the water, there are dozens of activities you can enjoy along the Thames, from fishing, through to wild swimming, paddle boarding, boating and kayaking. There are plenty of waterside outdoor activity centres along the river that offer instruction and masses of fun for the whole family.
FOODIE HEAVEN
Head to DORNEY LAKE, one of the venues to host the 2021 Olympic and Paralympic games and open to the public daily. You can try Rowing & Canoeing on the 2,200m lake or wander around the 400 acres of parkland.
If you’re a foodie then you’re on the right river. There are some fantastic waterside pubs, restaurants and other amenities along the Thames. The village of Bray has three Michelin starred restaurants including THE FAT DUCK, Heston Blumenthal’s eaterie famous for experimental combinations between food and science that tantalises many of the senses. THE HIND’S HEAD is another of Heston’s, described as a “modern gastropub with traditional decor and stand out English dishes with a twist.” THE WATERSIDE INN, owned by acclaimed French father and son duo Michel and Alain Roux, offers incredible food and has al fresco dining in a setting that is just magical. Marlow is the home of the only pub in the UK with two Michelin stars, Tom Kerridge’s THE HAND AND FLOWERS. If you enjoy cosy bars complete with roaring log fires, or relaxing in a riverside garden watching the boats go by, you’ll find plenty of them at every twist and turn as you roam the waterways.

RIVER THAMES IN LONDON
The Thames is most famous for running through the city of London. There are so many outstanding riverside landmarks on the voyage through London, from modern Millennium structures to stunning architecture designed by Britain’s most famous architect. Once best admired from the deck of one of its many scheduled passenger boats, it can now be viewed to striking advantage from the MILLENNIUM BRIDGE , the only bridge across the Thames that is solely for pedestrians.
THE TOWER OF LONDON has sat on the north bank of the
River Thames since the Norman Conquest. Its namesake White Tower was built in 1078 by William the Conquerer; other buildings followed over the next 300 years. Used as a royal residence and a prison over its colourful history, today it is a World Heritage Site boasting almost 3 millions visitors annually.
ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL was designed by Britain’s most
famous architect, Sir Christopher Wren in the 17th century. St Pauls was founded in 604 AD by missionary monks from Rome, with the earliest cathedral buildings surviving for over 600 years from around 1087 AD.
CANARY WHARF is now an estate covering 97 acres of office, retail and living space, with green outdoor spaces and a variety of restaurants and bars. It is on the site of the former West India Docks, originally built in 1802 to import and export goods and passengers to the Caribbean, known at the time as the British West Indies. THE LONDON EYE is an observation wheel opened for the Millennium (hence its other name, the Millenium Wheel) which is today the UK’s most popular paid tourist attraction with over 3 million annual visitors. You can see out for miles in all directions across the Thames from the Eye 10
www.tingdene-marinas.co.uk
THE TATE GALLERIES are a couple of miles apart on either side
of the river, with the Britain containing art from the 16th century onwards and the Modern housing contemporary collections.
TOWER BRIDGE is an icon of London and Britain as a whole. It was the largest and most sophisticated bascule bridge ever completed at the time of building in 1886. THE ROYAL BOTANIC KEW GARDENS is 500 acres of woodland that the Thames runs alongside, with a variety of activities and the world’s largest seed conservation project. THE OLD ROYAL NAVAL COLLEGE is another World Heritage Site on the Thames. The site was originally Greenwich Palace, the birthplace of King Henry VII. The current building being another designed by Sir Christopher Wren, it currently boasts tours around the Painted Hall and is dubbed ‘the most popular filming location in the world’ by Empire magazine. THE O2 (previously the Millennium Dome) is the eighth largest
building in the world and originally housed a major exhibition celebrating the beginning of the third millennium. Now home to the O2 arena for shows and gigs, as well as lots of entertainment venues, restaurants and bars. You can even climb across the top of the structure – where better for a view over the Thames.
THAMES BARRIER has been in place since 1982, its gleaming steel marking the transition of the area to estuarine flatlands, preventing floods to the Greater London area.
HISTORIC HEARTLAND Trade and communities have flourished along the Thames, ever since the Romans built the settlement of Londinium in 50AD. The area is rich in history; Windsor, Henleyon-Thames, Marlow and the historic market town of Wallingford are all well worth a visit. Each town and village has its own unique character and there are hundreds of historic churches, stately homes and monuments to visit. Pangbourne, where the river Pang flows into the River Thames, is the place where Jerome K. Jerome’s Three Men in a Boat finish their journey at the Swan Inn. It is also famous as the home of Kenneth Grahame, author of The Wind in the Willows. Of course there is WINDSOR CASTLE, among the royal residences the Queen spends most of her time, next to Buckingham Palace and Balmoral Castle. Just downriver from Pangbourne is MAPLEDURHAM HOUSE, dating from 1588 and believed to be inspiration behind Toad Hall. Built in the shape of an E for the reigning Queen Elizabeth, it has remained in the same family since it was built. Another inspiration from Toad Hall is FAWLEY COURT in Henley, rebuilt in 1684 and dating back to the Norman times. Since then the house has been a school, a retreat and a conference centre and is today a country club.
MOORINGS AND MARINAS If you’re a boat owner and enjoy boating, both as a pastime and a means to travel up and down the river, the Thames has it all. It is serviced by some world-class marinas that offer all the amenities and assistances you need. There’s ample overnight moorings available up and down the river, so it’s easy to stop off for a pub lunch, visit an historic house or do a quick bit of shopping to stock up on supplies for the rest of your journey. If you want a more permanent base for your boat, or just a few days stop-over on your journey along the Thames, you can rent a mooring at a marina. Tingdene Marinas has three wonderful locations: WINDSOR RACECOURSE MARINA, THAMES AND KENNET MARINA and WALTON MARINA. There you’ll find friendly and knowledgeable teams that are only too happy to impart more information about the Thames and offer expert recommendations for things to see and do on your trip.
MORE OF WHAT YOU LOVE As part of the Tingdene Loyalty Scheme you’re entitled to 28-days free mooring at all nine Tingdene Marinas located across the country, meaning you can spread your oars and journey up and down Britain’s waterways at your leisure without the additional costs of moorings. www.tingdene-marinas.co.uk

WINTERISING
YOUR BOAT The winter months and falling temperatures can wreak havoc on your craft if it is not properly prepared. So if you’re going to leave your boat unattended for any length of time this winter, we recommend winterising your boat so that you don’t have any nasty surprises when you return in the spring.
TOP TIP: DO NOT RELY ON MAINS ELECTRICITY TO KEEP YOUR BATTERIES TOPPED UP OR TO KEEP YOUR BOAT FROM FREEZING 12
www.tingdene-marinas.co.uk
DRAIN FRESH WATER
Drain the fresh water tank by opening the taps and letting the water drain overboard. When no more water comes out, turn the water pump off at the switch panel. Leave ALL taps on (especially the hot taps if you have a calorifier), including the shower, with the shower head placed in the shower tray or bath. Turning the stop cock off is NOT sufficient!
INBOARD RAW WATER
Cooled engines should have the sea cock turned off, antifreeze fed into the raw water feed and fed around the engine until it leaves the exhaust. Check that the sealed cooling, if present, also has the required level of anti-freeze in the system.
DIESEL HEATERS
For diesel heaters with a frost stat, you should ensure that you have a FULL tank of diesel and very good batteries. If you have access to electricity through a metered lead and have a marine battery charger, connect to the shoreline so that batteries do not go flat.
ELECTRIC HEATERS
Electric heaters should be used with caution. The recommended heater is a greenhouse ‘tube’ heater. These are very low wattage and cannot cause fires. Do not use the following – fan heaters, bar heaters, gas heaters, or any heater that has exposed elements. If you do, you may find your insurance is invalid if they cause a fire!
SMOKE & CO2 ALARMS
Smoke and CO2 alarms should have the batteries REMOVED if you are not on the craft. During the winter months, we do not want to visit craft with alarms going off due to flat batteries in alarm systems.
MOORING LINES & ROPES
Mooring lines and ropes should be used correctly. Check all of your mooring lines for chaffing or wear. If worn, they should be replaced. Do not use the whole 10 metres of line on a mooring tee to secure your craft. If we need to loosen your ropes due to water levels, wind, or snapped ropes etc., it takes a long time to undo all of the knots!
KEEP COOLED
Engines should be checked for a coolant anti-freeze level of at least -20 degrees, and ensure that the coolant levels are topped up.
BATTERY LEVELS
Battery levels on all wet cells should be checked and topped up with distilled water, unless they are the ‘sealed for life’ type. Turn off battery isolators. If you have an installed marine battery charger, this should be turned on to keep the batteries topped up.
VENTILATION
Ventilation is essential to keep down damp. Leave open a couple of window hoppers for air flow which helps to stop mold growing. Do not block low level vents on doors etc.
INSTANT WATER HEATERS
Instant water heaters should be drained using the drain plug. Leave the plug out with a bowl under the outlet. Leave the thermostat control on maximum.
TIMING
You should not leave these actions until last minute. Make sure you prepare in advance. Please be aware that this list is not exhaustive and does not guarantee that frost damage may not occur.
NEED HELP?
If you need help with any of the above, then please don’t hesitate to give your marina team a call. The team will be happy to help and can advise whether these actions can be completed by the marina on your behalf before any damage is possibly caused. www.tingdene-marinas.co.uk

S
eptember 2021 saw the return of the muchanticipated Southampton Boat Show. Not only was it an exciting return for visitors, but for exhibitors (like us) too, as the 2020 show was unfortunately cancelled at the last minute due to Covid restrictions. For Tingdene Marinas & Boat Sales, Southampton Boat Show is the pinnacle event of our show season and one where we can exhibit all aspects of our business showcasing not just boats but marinas too. A festival of everything boating, Southampton Boat Show gives visitors the chance to see all the latest boats and equipment that is available on the market. From sailing dinghies to entry level super yachts, the show is a must for anyone with an interest in life afloat. There are also various ‘on the water’ displays to keep you entertained, with one of the UK’s best flyboard riders showing it’s not only James Bond who has access to the best gadgets! The show is a great day out for all the family and one which is made even better if you are a Tingdene Annual Berth Holder, as you will receive two complimentary tickets to visit the show. If you’re looking for a new boat then Southampton Boat Show is most definitely a great place to start your search. At this year’s show we displayed seven excellent boat choices with models to suit all tastes and activities. Stylish Cranchi yachts and tenders and family friendly Viking river cruisers. Elegant Maxima sloops and impressive Ranieri sports boats. The appetite to discover new models and manufacturers was evident. The popularity of boating is clearly still on the rise, with at least one or more from each brand selling at the show itself. To top it all off we could not have asked for better weather either. Glorious sunshine and a gentle breeze ensured the best conditions to meander around the pontoons and take in the huge array of boats on offer. It really was a fantastic way of experiencing all facets of boating life. As many regular visitors will have noticed, our land-based marina stand was different this year but still showcased all the pre-owned boats we had available, many of which sold early on into the show. Since 2019 we have been working hard to make our stands are as eco-friendly as possible. Our stand structure and furniture are all reusable and we made an effort with day-to-day consumables. We successfully minimised the use of throw away plastic, offering drinking water in recyclable cans and using biodegradable bin liners. Every little helps! As the Southampton Boat Show came to a close so did our show calendar for 2021. We are already looking forward to what 2022 will bring. With some new shows potentially on the horizon for the ever-booming boating world, we would like to thank everyone who came to see us this year and we look forward to seeing you all again in 2022. www.tingdene-marinas.co.uk

CRUISE LIKE A
VIKING
Like their namesake, Viking Cruisers are built to last and are incredible vessels. Made in the same factory and under the same ownership since the company’s conception in the 1970s, Viking cruisers are a classic sight on many of the UK’s inland waterways and there are many good reasons for this. Every Viking Cruiser is designed and carefully crafted in Dunmow, Essex and engineered to deliver exceptional comfort, performance and usability. Manufactured using only the highest quality materials and finished by highly skilled and dedicated craftsmen, each boat sets out to 16

exceed expectations. In this article we take a look at four models that are currently available from Tingdene Boat Sales. Today, most Vikings are sold and built to order allowing for a great deal of customisation. The standard new boat is built to the Viking Highline specification, which includes all the creature comforts you would expect from a family cruiser. Each model also comes with a 4-stroke outboard motor. This is not only more environmentally friendly, but also helps to keep costs lower, makes servicing easier and increases the usable living and storage space on the vessel. If you are interested in finding out more please contact your local Tingdene boat sales office for additional information or visit tingdeneboatsales.net
THE VIKING 24 A popular choice amongst mid-range cruisers, the Viking 24 is a best seller and offers excellent value for money. With four-berth family accommodation and a large cockpit there’s plenty of room for everyone to take in the scenery as you meander along the river. The seating then converts into a further double berth so at the end of a beautiful day no one has to leave the party!
THE VIKING 275 HIGHLINE Thoughtfully designed and beautifully finished, the Viking 275 is a home away from home and a great way of bringing the family together and getting away from it all. The large open plan layout and fully appointed galley make entertaining a breeze, giving you the space to relax whatever the weather. NEW TO THE TINGDENE GROUP
WAVENEY RIVER CENTRE
18
www.tingdene-marinas.co.uk
W
aveney River Centre, “the Broads’ Best Kept Secret”, has been sold to Tingdene Holiday Parks for an undisclosed sum.
Waveney River Centre was bought by Len Funnell and his family in 2003, when it was a small caravan park and marina employing just 3 people. Over the next two decades, operated by his daughter and son-inlaw Ruth & James Knight and a team which has grown to over 50, the business has become one of the Broads’ most iconic destinations.
Tingdene Group, a long-established leisure industry operator, have four holiday parks and two marinas close to Waveney River Centre – including Broadlands Park & Marina at Oulton Broad. Ruth and James Knight said “For Waveney River Centre, the sale means joining a group which will not only meet and exceed the high standards which our team have always set for themselves, but also take the business forward in new and exciting ways. We wish Tingdene and our former staff the very best on their new journey together.”
Paul Spriggins, Tingdene Holiday Parks Director, added “We are delighted to have been presented with the opportunity to purchase Waveney River Centre. For many years we have admired how the business has grown to become the ‘Jewel of the Broads’. James and Ruth have been great ambassadors for our industry and instrumental to the success of the park and the marina. Waveney River Centre is an exciting and perfect fit to our expanding portfolio. We look forward to working with our new team, and to the exciting opportunity of taking Waveney River Centre into the future.” www.tingdene-marinas.co.uk

HISTORY OF THE
BROADS
The history of The Broads is very much a story of the relationship between man and nature. Over centuries the area has evolved into the Broadland we know today - a magical place for UK holidays. Holiday homes in Suffolk are ideally placed for enjoying the unique waterways that, strictly speaking, are called The Norfolk and Suffolk Broads.

here, today, people enjoy messing about in boats and spending time in their holiday homes, there was once a cruel and unforgiving landscape. This flat windswept swathe of land emerged as the sea receded. The area was soon occupied by ancient tribes who made a life for themselves in the marshy soil. When metal was discovered, copper would be worked into tools and utensils during a sociological shift that developed into the Bronze Age. By the time the Romans were occupying Britain the sea levels were falling; swamps dried out creating fertile land. The Romans would start to extract peat from the Norfolk soil. It was an accessible source of fuel and they knew how to use it. The next five hundred years would see the Romans leave Britain, the Vikings arrive and a new society emerge. The first seeds of East Anglia’s agricultural heritage were sown.
When the Normans took hold of Britain the area became suddenly busy. Sheep farming, salt production and the new leather industry flourished. All of this meant an increased need for shelter and warmth. By the twelfth century much of Norfolk in particular had been plundered of wood in the allconsuming search for building materials and heat. Peat would now emerge again as a source of fuel, this time on a much larger scale. Peat digging was an enterprise that would last for two hundred years, a vast commercial operation. The monks of St Benet’s Abbey acquired huge rights to peat cutting. It’s estimated that the monastery used 200,000 bales of peat a year itself. There was also a healthy trade in selling the fuel to Norwich and Great Yarmouth. Across those two centuries millions of cubic feet of peat were dug out and as the holes got bigger, the sea levels got higher. When the fourteenth century dawned the great empty peat pits became flooded. Centuries would pass before this lost and voracious industry was identified as their cause, but
the East Anglian landscape now had The Broads. Their manmade origins would slide from memory. They may have been fished, and doubtless their waters were used for agricultural purposes but this was their quiet time. It was as if the Broads were sleeping. Norfolk, and to some extent Suffolk, was becoming hugely important in the nation’s economy where agriculture was king. This created an increasing amount of river traffic and with that came the growing realisation that Norfolk’s waterways needed better navigation. By 1670 an Act of Parliament had been passed enabling improvements. By the eighteenth century, The Broads and the rivers that link them were constantly busy. The legendary boats known as Wherries had emerged as the workhorses of a commerce that shipped the produce of the booming agricultural output. And yet, the region’s population was not growing in line with the rest of the country. The once all important agricultural heartland was becoming secondary to the great industrial revolution that would change the nation forever. It would have an unprecedented effect on The Broads.

When the railways arrived in Norfolk in 1844 it was as if the Broads had a ticket to the future. Initially rail passengers began to notice The Broads on their way to the resorts of North Norfolk. The Victorians were falling in love with ‘the outdoor life’ and rural tranquillity, a welcome contrast to their increasingly demanding lifestyle. Very soon boatyards and retailers saw a market for hiring out boats and supplying the necessary holiday provisions. When the twentieth century arrived it was as if the Broads were leading a double life. The trains poured their passengers into the emerging tea rooms and inns and the boat yards engaged with the fledgling Broads holiday industry. Having struggled to book a holiday boat for himself and some companions, Mr Harry Blake had the idea of acting as a booking agent. Before the First World War had shattered the calm of Edwardian England, he’d run a tentative advertising campaign and, arguably, invented the modern holiday boat hire business. The Broads now came into their own; regattas and sailing clubs for the locals, holidays for visitors and evolving boat design saw the area enjoy the 1920s and 30s in style. Then came the Second World War where the Broads were all but shut down; fear of invasion was very real. Some boats were used as temporary accommodation and one man, charged with organising that, saw the potential in peace time - his name was Hoseason. From the 1950’s onwards, Blakes and Hoseasons became the catalysts for the development of Broads boat hire. Sophisticated marketing aimed at a post war generation with a new found affluence delivered outstanding results; the Broads were now a playground.
In 1952, J. N. Jennings had published his ‘Origins of the Broads’ in which he claimed that although there might be some exceptions, The Broads were a natural phenomenon. However his colleague Doctor Joyce Lambert had carried out different tests, where she discovered that The Broads had flat beds, vertical sides and pathways through them. It was all linked to peat digging. She went public with her controversial findings - the Broads were man made! Knowing more about their past was not answering questions about the future of the Broads. Despite the work done over decades, the preservation of the area became a real issue. It stimulated debates at national level; there was plainly a need for a cohesive and caring management of the waterways. Eventually it arrived in 1989 in the form of The Broads Authority. Now, The Broads are internationally renowned; boat hire holidays had been the catalyst for their becoming a holiday destination but now the area is hugely popular for so much more. With UK holidays becoming increasingly desirable, The Broads are as popular as ever. 22
