DISCOVER THE WONDERS OF THE RIVER GREAT OUSE

EXPLORE WATERS OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

Stretching from the heart of England to the North Sea, the River Great Ouse navigation is the fifth longest river in the UK. As a combined network of it’s tributaries, the rivers Cam, Lark, Little Ouse and Wissey, this waterway offers 140 miles of navigable river flowing through some of the most peaceful countryside and ‘chocolate box’ villages, as well as some major towns and cities. That said, the Great Ouse is one of Britain’s lesser explored waterways, with many locks and navigations separating the river with the Grand Union Canal.

If you are looking to embrace the tranquil boating experience, mooring on the Great Ouse is ideal. Whether looking for new waters to explore or already a regular frequenter, there is always something new to see and do, making time spent afloat nothing less than a pleasure.

Read on to find out more about how this unique area of the country can enhance your boating experience on the water and make your memories unforgettable.

Houghton Mill

On the Great Ouse, you can truly escape the day-to-day and take in your surroundings completely uninterrupted.

TOTAL TRANQUILITY

Well-known for its peace and calmness, this stretch of water is the antidote to a busy week. You can truly escape the day-to-day and take in your surroundings completely uninterrupted. Rural landscapes, breath-taking historical sights and local wildlife adorn the banks, while cosmopolitan city jaunts and water-side eateries provide an exciting prospect, especially when so easy to reach from your boat.

AMAZING SITES & FABULOUS BITES

On the River Great Ouse, you’re spoiled for choice with impressive landmarks, things to do and places to dine. By nature of the UK waterways, you’ll pass through many rural villages and towns offering a whole host of family-ran cafés, quaint pubs, and waterside restaurants, many award-winning and popular with locals and visitors. You’ll be spoilt for choice with the bank-side spots in vibrant Cambridge, offering the perfect spot for a drink and bite to eat, and to moor up to enjoy the city’s entertainment, shopping and culture.

GET IN TOUCH

UNEXPECTED SURPRISES

Although it runs through the notoriously flat Fenlands, the Great Ouse and its tributaries use a total of 22 locks to help graduate the river’s gentle descent to the sea. These are some of the shallowest locks in Britain and are mostly operated by boat owners themselves, a surprisingly simple and fascinating process in which you can involve everyone onboard. Cruising time between locks varies between 30 minutes and four hours, depending on where you are.

Visit Hartford Marina for free for up to 28 days with your Privilege Card, and enjoy all the River Great Ouse has to offer.

River Cam

A FASCINATING HISTORY

The Great Ouse is not only a hidden gem today, it’s charming history attracts just as much intrigue. Important for navigation and for draining the low-lying region, its course has been modified several times, with the first recording dating back to 1236.

In 1618, the construction of sluices and locks along the river began to help aid navigation of the Old and New Bedford Rivers, built to provide a faster route to sea. However, with the introduction of the railways, the conditions of the river unfortunately declined, making it completely unusable, finally being declared derelict in the 1870’s.

Fortunately, this was short-lived and with the popularity of leisure boating increasing throughout the 1900’s, the river was soon brought back to life again. Significant interest was shown in the local sugar beet between 1925 - 1959 too, thus leading to the river re-opening to Bedford in 1978.

A once necessary facility in the region, the River Great Ouse in present times is used solely for leisure boaters to enjoy a slower pace of life, taking in the sights and sounds that have derived from the fascinating history of the waterway.

MOORINGS ON THE GREAT OUSE

Perfectly placed in the middle of the Great Ouse navigation is Tingdene’s Hartford Marina in Wyton, Cambridgeshire. With every conceivable service for you and your boat, knowledgeable and welcoming staff, a boat sales office, onsite family-friendly restaurant, and a thriving boating community, you have everything you need to immerse yourself in the boating lifestyle all in one place.

As one of Tingdene’s largest marinas, with 321 berths for boats of all sizes, Hartford Marina has benefited from significant investment over the past few years, including the installation of numerous new facilities and floating pontoons across the site. There is also a newly introduced cruiser-specific pontoon, alongside plenty of room for larger narrowboat and widebeam craft, plus everything inbetween.

The location of Hartford Marina couldn’t be more convenient, with the A1 and M11 close by and direct access to Cambridge and London via the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway. An ideal spot for weekday commuters or those seeking an easily accessible, quick weekend retreat away from it all, Hartford Marina provides the best of both worlds.

THE BEST ON THE BROADS

Tingdene have family-run eateries located on all of our three marina and holiday park multi-sites on the Broads; Waveney River Centre and Broadlands and Brundall Bay Marinas.

All three restaurants offer locally-sourced menus, a familyfriendly atmosphere, stunning waterside scenery, and plenty to do onsite and around the area.

Kevin Allibone, the manager of The Waveney Inn & Hotel, recently acquired the site to run alongside his other four local hospitality businesses. All ran by Kevin’s trusty team of his son Jake and niece Caitlin, their family-ran set up and ethos comes across in their family-friendly offering. He gave us some background on his career journey through the East Coast’s restaurant industry and some insight into what’s next for The Waveney Inn & Hotel...

“I have been in hospitality since the tender age of 15, starting as a trainee at a local holiday park. I soon progressed to general manager and knew then that hospitality was for me! At the same time, I felt like the next step for me was to work for myself, so my wife and I took on the lease of The Bell Inn St Olaves, which then began our very own local hospitality journey. We took over The Waveney Inn last Autumn and from April this year, the hotel too! We’ve been busy working on refurbishments to be ready for the summer and are delighted to be able to offer visitors fantastic service with essentially everything under one roof!”

The Waveney Inn & Hotel has been given a new lease of life under this new ownership. The onsite hotel has recently reopened, complete with modern refurbishments, ready to be booked now for those seeking a relaxing break. An exciting summer of events and live sport is ahead of us too, providing the perfect accompaniment to the delicious pub-grub style menu and huge selection of drinks on offer. Their menu is classically British, made using locally sourced, fresh produce, with their stand-out dishes being an irresistible cooked breakfast and delectable Sunday lunch, both of which proving both popular with berth holders, holiday makers and visitors alike. There’s never been a better opportunity to delve into the tastes of the East Coast.

MAKE A DAY OF IT

There’s plenty to do while you’re visiting, including retro arcade games and pool tables, so the kids (and big kids!) will be happily occupied. Onsite, there is also an indoor swimming pool, free to use to all Privilege card holders, and a convenience shop onsite for all your essentials. Accompany your meal with a stroll or bike ride along the many stunning waterside routes, or hop on the foot ferry at the marina over to Carlton Marshes Nature Reserve, where you can spot an abundance of local wildlife. From here, walk a few minutes further to reach Broadlands Park and Marina, a neighbouring Tingdene marina and holiday park site situated in Oulton Broad. You can then go on to explore Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth via easy transport links. Your east coast exploration can be as endless as you wish!

“I am an adventurous explorer of the English and Welsh canal systems, based at Pyrford Marina. During my 49 years of canal boating I have travelled almost all of those connected waterways, with the longest trip being from Pyrford Marina to Ripon in Yorkshire - a round trip of some 1,048 miles!

In 1996, our canal boat ‘Bruin’ was privileged to be the support vessel for what was the last horse drawn canal boat trip between Little Venice in London and Gas Street Basin in Birmingham, raising money for Cancer Research.

‘Bruin’ was specifically designed to undertake Estuary trips, the longest one being to the end of the navigable River Medway, a voyage organised by the St. Pancras Cruising Club. Unintentionally we did encounter wind force five, so it was a bit of a lumpy run from bow down the Thames Estuary. ‘Bruin’ has also transited the Severn Estuary from Bristol Docks to Sharpness Dock, and the Mersey Estuary from the Manchester Ship canal to Liverpool.” - Norman Woolley (N B Bruin)

‘Here are a few photos of Winston. He is a real boat dog and loves being on the water. We are moored at Racecourse Marina and he loves coming to the boat with us!’ - Lesley Hogan, Racecourse Marina

BERTH HOLDER STORY

“IT’S IN THE BLOOD”

“In the early 70’s, my parents navigated the Thames with ‘Smokey’, a 14' Shetland, where I would often be found in a cot on the back seat of the cockpit. My aunt and uncle, fuelled by a love for the sea, also owned a yacht on the south coast, prompting a move from London to the Isle of Wight.

In 1971, we bid farewell to ‘Smokey’, upgrading to a Freeman MK2 called ‘Por Fin’. The boat found its home in Springfields Boat Yard in Maidenhead, where memories of playing in the hull mould used to build Springfield cruisers linger, as does spotting Ernie Wise passing by regularly on his Freeman 24.

‘Por Fin’ became the backdrop for countless adventures, from weekend getaways to multi-week trips stretching from Lechlade to Teddington. Family holidays involved dad cycling home for the working week while my mum and I stayed on the boat. Unforgettable mishaps like falling overboard, rope entanglements and unwelcome encounters with wasps’ nests added colour to those years! In 1981, ‘Por Fin’ was replaced by a caravan in a poignant and upsetting decision. The transition coincided with my teenage years and discovery of BMX, leading to my 40 year cycle racing career!

My fascination with boats persisted, sustained by day trips and Thames walks. The dream of owning a boat in retirement gained momentum when friends introduced us to their Maxum 270SE, ‘Tranquillity,’ moored at Tingdene’s Thames and Kennet Marina. The onset of COVID presented an opportunity for a UK holiday, redirecting us toward a short break on a hire boat. A three-day stint on a Le Boat between Benson and Oxford solidified the family’s enjoyment, paving the way for the retirement dream.

A subsequent cycling accident ended my racing career, soon accelerating those plans. As I recuperated, winter cruises took me between Chertsey and Reading, where a Bayliner 2855/285 caught my eye. It’s sports cruiser layout and comfortable cabin for family overnights made it the perfect choice. Finally, a 285 at Racecourse Marina, ‘Happy Wife Happy Life,’ became ours in January 2023.

Months of cleaning and tinkering followed, culminating in our maiden voyage last May. The process, reminiscent of my dad’s passion for boats, felt like a tribute to him, even though he isn’t here to witness it. I’m sure he would be proud.

The first season on ‘Happy Wife Happy Life’ was a success, filled with friends and family trips and valuable lessons. As we approach season two, the anticipation is palpable, with winter upgrades complete, new marina friendships, and the promise of more good times on the horizon.”

The best way to travel!
Quality time spend with family and friends.

AN ENDLESS SUMMER

ON THE BROADS

LEAVE NO STONE UNTURNED ON THE BEAUTIFUL BROADS

Our Norfolk and Suffolk residents and experts have designed the ultimate guide to summer hot spots on the Broads, so you can get the most out of this unique waterway. Whether you are a frequent Broads cruiser, or you’re a newbie ready to explore this summer, take in some ideas for your next east coast cruise, from the people who know best!

BURGH CASTLE ROMAN FORT

One for the history buffs, Burgh Castle is one of the best preserved Roman monuments in East Anglia, and one of the most impressive Roman buildings to survive anywhere in Britain. During the 3rd and 4th centuries it was originally built as one of a chain of ‘Forts of the Saxon Shore’, designed to defend the coast of south-east England. Today, stunning views are admired from the fort, spanning across the Waveney and Yare rivers, an area rich in animal and plant life.

STRUMPSHAW FEN NATURE RESERVE

Nestled on the River Yare, Strumpshaw Fen is home to a fantastic range of Broadland habitats and wildlife to discover. Enjoy a walk round the reedbeds, woodlands and orchid-rich meadows before an al fresco cuppa from the visitor centre. Little ones will love our den building area along our adventure trail. If the weather’s kind, why not stop for a picnic too?

PETTITTS ANIMAL ADVENTURE PARK

A fantastic day out for all ages, set among the stunning Norfolk Broads, Pettitts Animal Adventure Park is a must visit for families. Say hello to the inhabitants of Meerkat Kingdom, make new discoveries on a Dino Jeep Safari, get your adrenaline pumping on the adventure rides, play a game of Jurassic Golf, and after all that, enjoy a delicious ice cream in their new parlour. With plenty of play areas and over 25 different species of animals to find, the fun never stops!

REEDHAM FERRY COMPLEX

Spend an idyllic afternoon by the water at Reedham Ferry Complex, a facility that’s been running since the early 17th century, and hot-spot for history fans.

The infamous ferry runs between Norwich and Great Yarmouth and is the only crossing point between the two cities, saving 30 miles off the same journey by car! The ferry is operated by a vehicular chain, pulling the boat along the River Yar. Onsite at the Complex, enjoy a bite to eat at family-run Reedham Ferry Inn, also rich history and serving fresh, locally sourced dishes. Take advantage of the free visitor moorings alongside the pub, and hop off to enjoy onsite fishing or the plethora of nearby family activities.

• 1 shallot, very finely chopped
