Journal Week 1 Activity: ‘COMPRESSION’ Activity one ‘Compression’ is is using the wood bricks to build a Tower. We used two-thirds wood bricks to build the tower. But I still cannot image how weight the whole tower that we made. It was a group work. From this group activity I enjoyed the process of building a tower but without planning. The point ‘un-planning’ could be found through the photos below. You can find the whole tower shape change three times: at first the base of the tower is a square then change to the circle, and then became an ellipse and became smaller and smaller to the end. The Total height of the tower we build is like about 1.8m. With the tower became higher and higher, we need to be very careful, because the bricks are not stick each other. I think our group’s work is the most stable tower in that tutorial. Because when my group mate tried to destroy it, each time she destroyed the tower it still stable. When we built the tower at first we want to build a square tower and at last it was not. However, we didn’t play any ting. The other thing I though was why our tower was stable than others because the stronger corner that we built from start to finish like these picture show that.

These photos are here showing the process of building the tower: 1. Material: wood bricks 2. base

4. Finally

These last two photos are showing my group mate collapsed the tower and second photo shows the tower was stable.

The below is the force analysis in our tower

As the way we built the tower, the equal distribution of force make the whole tower more stable than other groups’.
