As we turn to the new year, we're excited to be publishing the next in our One Story, Many Voices series: The Phoenix of Persia. This project is particularly special to me as it includes an original composition by Iranian musicians, 25 school resource boxes to loan up and down the country and a programme of nationwide events. We're also publishing a new folktale Quill Soup, illustrated by South African illustrator Dale Blankenaar and retold by Alan Durant. Elizabeth Laird has collaborated with Finnish illustrator Jenny Lucander to create Grobblechops, an exciting new addition to our Tales by Rumi series. Our new picture book Dare encourages children everywhere to dare to dream big, to help others and speak out for what is right - an important message for 2019. 3
For thousands of years, people have been telling stories...From this rich global heritage, we can find stories that are strikingly similar but also different. Our series ‘One Story, Many Voices’ explores well-known stories told from different and unique perspectives from all over the world.
The Phoenix of Persia Sally Pomme Clayton Illustrated by Amin Hassanzadeh Sharif
In a bustling marketplace in Iran, a traditional storyteller entertains her audience with the tale of Prince Zal and the Simorgh. High up on the Mountain of Gems lives the Simorgh, a wise phoenix whose flapping wings disperse the seeds of life across the world. A king awaits the birth of his son but when the child is born with white hair, he is banished to the forest. The young child is brought up by the Simorgh until his father realises the love he has lost and seeks his return. The second in our ‘One Story, Many Voices’ series, this legend from Shahnameh, written by the Iranian poet Ferdowsi between c. 977 and 1010 CE has echoes of Snow White and firebird folklore. • Hardback • ISBN: 978-1-910328-43-9 • Publication: 1 May 2019 • Price: £12.99 • 32 pp • 275 x 240 mm • Age: 6+ • All Rights Available (excl. Cinderella of the Nile Beverley Naidoo Illustrated by Marjan Vafaeian
Beautifully retold by the award-winning author Beverley Naidoo, this earliest known version of Cinderella is brought to life for the modern-day reader. Rhodopis is a Greek girl who is sold into slavery by bandits and taken to Egypt. Along the way she becomes friends with the storyteller Aesop and a host of playful animals. Her master gives her a pair of beautiful rose-red slippers, making three other servants jealous. But when Horus the Falcon swoops in to steal her slipper, Rhodopis has little idea that this act will lead her to the King of Egypt.
Amin Hassanzadeh Sharif Amin Hassanzadeh Sharif was born in Tehran in 1979 and is an awardwinning illustrator whose work has been published worldwide. To illustrate The Phoenix of Persia, Amin has used his distinctive sgraffito technique, which involves scratching through a layer of still-wet paint to reveal what’s underneath.
"In this delightful retelling of an ancient Greek variant by Beverley Naidoo, our heroine wins the day without a fairy godmother or a fancy frock…" Named as one of the best children's and young adult books of 2018, The Telegraph
* Includes an original Iranian musical composition available to download, alongside teacher resources and a programme of nationwide events. Find out more here: www.tinyowl. co.uk/pheonixofpersia
"Brilliant colours spring from the page, a feast for the eyes. It is exciting to be faced with such vibrant images transporting us to another world to meet a lively, positive heroine."

Quill soup Alan Durant Illustrated by Dale Blankenaar
Noko, the porcupine, is very hungry. On arriving at a village, he asks the other animals for some food and shelter. But, despite their full bellies, all the animals say they have nothing to spare. Never mind: he’ll just have to make do and cook a pot of soup from the quills off his back – a soup so tasty even the king likes it. Once the villagers hear of his plan they offer just enough ingredients to make a soup worthy of them all... This African version of Stone Soup celebrates generosity and kindness — and the message that we can all benefit if we share our resources.

One Story, Many Voices The Boy Who Cried Wolf Mahni Tazhibi (trans. Azita Rassi)
This classic fable playfully explores the temptation in us all to exaggerate – and the risks attached! The Boy Who Cried Wolf is familiar as one of Aesop’s Fables, but its origins go much further back than that, and versions of it are found in cultures throughout the world. In all versions, the message is the same: nobody believes a liar. Mahni Tazhibi’s version is exceptionally illustrated, with the young Iranian artist’s distinctive style – a visual treat. • Hardback • ISBN: 978-1-910328-04-0 • Publication: 5 February 2015 • Price: £11.99 • 24 pp • 250 x 250 mm • Age: 3+ • Rights Available (excl. The couple suffer a wicked fate at the hands of the king but are saved by the redemptive values of truth and bravery. The story of Bijan and Manije is one of the ancient epic stories of Shahnameh (The Book of Kings) by the 10th century poet Ferdowsi. Nazli Tahvili
While a bluebird builds her nest in the forest, two eccentric gentlemen have a more ambitious construction in mind: a vast palatial building, made from birdcages filled with colourful parrots. As the trees come down and the structure goes up, the bluebird watches on. More and more caged birds are consigned to their fate until at last a huge dome completes the work. But when the celebrating architects go in to admire their creation, the little bluebird brings their ambitions crashing down around them.
A young boy living in the heart of a busy city spots an eagle swooping overhead. He dreams of what it would be like to fly away from the noise and soar over mountains and rivers. Climbing onto the roof, he uses chalk to draw his own eagle – and then himself – into existence. The two fly away together, and embark on a wonderful adventure of the boy’s own imagination.

There’s Room for everyone Anahita Teymorian
A child grows and discovers the world. As he lies awake at night, he sees there’s enough room in the sky for all the stars and the moon. When he visits the ocean, he sees there is enough room for all the fish, even for the whales. As he grows up, he doesn’t understand why people fight for space. Surely, if we are kinder to one another, there will always be room for everyone?
