Future Leaders of Tioga County
Tioga County is growing future leaders. The Tioga County Institute for Advancement Program kicked off with its opening session last month. Nineteen county employees attended the first of five classes that will be given throughout the year. Over a year ago, a Succession Planning Committee was established to examine the approaching retiring county workforce and to identify the leadership positions that would soon be left vacant. The impending loss of historical knowledge and skill sets is a threat to the future success of county government. Therefore, the Planning Committee identified critical roles within the county and with the help of current leaders identified possible internal successors for the future. The Planning Committee studied similar training programs such as Ontario County, and then created Tioga County specific classes intended to educate individuals and help them step into positions of leadership. Classes will include management skills, budgeting and fiscal
skills, county operational procedures, hiring, conflict management, and will increase overall county knowledge. The goal of the institute is to develop a program designed to build leadership skills, to provide technical information and to prepare individuals for future opportunities within Tioga County Government. Apalachin Library Lasagna Dinner Fundraiser A fundraiser dinner for the Apalachin Library will be held on Sunday, February 25, at Ransom Steele Tavern at 552 Main Street in Apalachin. The menu includes meat lasagna or vegetarian baked ziti, antipasto salad, garlic knots, and coffee/tea/soda and dessert. Time slots available are 12:00 pm, 1:00 pm, or 2:00pm. Take -out is available. Tickets are available for $15 for

Forty-seven members of the Triple Cities Ski Club (TCSC) enjoyed skiing during a week-long trip in the Alps at St. Anton am Arlberg, Austria. St. Anton received a total of 21 inches of snow before and during their stay, so much snow that transportation in and out of the area was shut down for a few days after their arrival due to an over abundance of snow and avalanche dangers. Skiers witnessed breathtaking views with every turn. Ten members
took a side trip by train to Innsbruck, Austria on the last day. Upcoming TCSC trips are to Killington, VT; Snow Basin and Powder Mountain, Utah; Belleayre, NY; and Mount Snow, VT. The 325member group meets the first Thursday of the month through May at 7 pm at Knights of Columbus, 136 Park Avenue in, Binghamton. Triplecitiesskiclub.com

Former Apalachin Resident Named Regional Racing Marketing Manager for Tioga Downs, Vernon Downs Jason Settlemoir (Regional VP, Racing and Simulcast) announced that Garrett Madison (pictured) has been named Regional Racing Marketing Manager for Tioga Downs and Vernon Downs. Madison, an Apalachin native and a graduate of Owego Free Academy, started with the company as a Mutual Teller in 2011. He eventually became the Regional Racing Operations Manager, a position he held for the last four years. Madison will be responsible for all marketing of racing, including creating all of the advertising with different kinds of media. He will also be responsible for all racing promotions done at both tracks, among many other duties. Settlemoir said, “It has been a pleasure watching Garrett grow with the company in every position he has held. We feel his hard work and dedication will help him thrive in his new position.” Jason Bluhm (Sr. Regional Director of Racing Tioga Downs & Vernon Downs) also praised Madison. “Garrett is a great worker, I’ve put a lot on his plate these past few years and he’s handled everything brilliantly. Apalachin Lions Club Scholarships The Apalachin Lions Club 31st Annual Scholarship program will award $3,000 in scholarships to deserving students from the class of 2018 who live in the 13732, and 13760, 18830 zip codes. This covers Apalachin, Campville east to the Broome County line, and Little Meadows, PA. The scholarships are awarded to students who have made outstanding contributions in service to their community and school. Distribution of scholarships will be as follows: One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to students who attend Owego Free Academy and Vestal High School, and one $1,000 schol-
arship will be awarded to a student who attends one of the following schools: Broome Tioga BOCES, Montrose Junior-Senior High, Seton Catholic Central High School, Ross Corners Christian Academy, and Home Schooling (LEAH). Hats Off to Business at Tioga Chamber Annual Dinner Meeting “Hats Off” is the is the theme for the Tioga County Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner Meeting, Community Awards and Silent Auction sponsored by M&T Bank to be held on Thursday, February 15, at the Owego Treadway Banquet Center. Cocktails begin at 5:30 pm with dinner at 6:30 pm. A Silent Auction will continue throughout the evening with items donated by chamber businesses and supporters. This year’s “Hats Off” theme is meant to remind everyone that giving back to the community is important. The highlight of the event will be the presentation of the Spirit of Tioga Awards. Special recognition is given

Owego Hose Teams to host Chicken Wing Eating Contest Owego Hose Teams, Inc. has teamed up with Bill’s Restaurant to host a chicken wing eating contest on Thursday, February 22, at 53 South Depot Street. Doors open at 5 pm with the contest starting promptly at 7 pm. Proceeds benefit the Baker Fireman’s Fountain Restoration effort. Contestants will eat 24 chicken wings in sauce in the quickest time. The registration fee is $25 and includes no cover charge and competitor T-shirt. First prize is one player paid entry into the 2nd Annual Owego Hose Team Memorial Golf Tournament to be held at the Tioga Golf Club on June 2 valued at $80. memorial to his son, George Hobart Baker, who was killed in an automobile accident in 1913. Both men had been members and chief engineers of the Owego Fire Department. The fountain was last restored in 2000 and has again fallen into disrepair. The overall cost estimate for the restoration is in upwards of $100,000. Repairs that must be made include cement and concrete replacement, cast iron refurbishment, repainting, pipe, plumbing and pump work, basin liner repair and updated landscaping. For a complete restoration the fountain will have to be disassembled and transported to a conservation facility for treatment. The hose team hopes to have the restoration complete this year.

TEAM Tioga Works for You
The Tioga County Department of Economic Development and Planning (EDP), Tioga County Industrial Development Agency (IDA), and the Tioga County Local Development Corporation (LDC) unveiled their new look, brand, and name last month. The three organizations are now known simply as TEAM Tioga. “Before TEAM Tioga, people only referred to us individually,” said LeeAnn Tinney, Director of Tioga County EDP, “Although we are known as different entities, we collaborate on so many projects that the lines tend to blur. This made us wonder, why not identify ourselves as one team?” Madison Tinney, a Freelance Graphic Designer located in the Owego area, developed the new brand strategy for the organizations. In November, TEAM Tioga selected Tinney to develop a comprehensive branding
and marketing strategy. Elements of the strategy include a cohesive TEAM Tioga identity, as well as, a social media and advertising campaign to enhance awareness of economic development activities in our local community and across the region. According to Bryant Myers, Executive Director of the Tioga County IDA, “Together we all have the same mission to strengthen the Tioga County economy. TEAM Tioga provides the resources, funding opportunities and contacts that will help our businesses grow.” Rebecca Maffei, Director of Tioga County Tourism added, “TEAM Tioga will make it easier for the community to find the resources they need. No matter what your business may be, we will connect you with the right person. We work for you.” TEAM Tioga’s Facebook page launched earlier this week. They will also be sharing the new brand and logo at the Tioga Chamber Annual Dinner Meeting on February 15, from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. Senator Fred Akshar visited three local schools last month to continue his “Akshar's All-Stars” district-wide student recognition program. Each month, Senator Akshar recognizes three or four local students selected by their school districts in the 52nd Senate District who have shown great leadership, compassion, school spirit or improvement amongst their peers. For each student recognized as an “Akshar All-Star” Senator Akshar presents them with a T-shirt, framed certificate, and a challenge coin. Akshar recently recognized students at Owego Free Academy, Union Endicott High School, and Greene High School. At Owego Free Academy, Akshar recognized senior Kennedy Keefer (pictured above) for being a true fighter and not letting adversity or medical issues stand in her way, achieving success and fulfillment both in and out of school. Thanks to her hard academic work, Kennedy will graduate with several college
credits to give her a head start in her continued education. Kennedy is a long standing member of Key Club (serving as president this year), an active member of the YES LEADs program, SADD, and the yearbook staff. In addition, she is a member of Girl Scouts since the age of 6 and has achieved all of the top awardsBronze, Silver and Gold. She works part time since 2016, most recently as a student aide at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital for an average of 20 hours a week. At Union-Endicott High School, Akshar recognized senior Jonathan Dallard for his outstanding commitment to academic excellence and service to his community. At Greene High School, Akshar recognized junior Sara Tanzini for her positive attitude, unflappable work ethic and always being willing to lend a hand to other students. OA Music Dept. to Present “Hello, Dolly”
The Owego Apalachin Music Department, including over 50 students in the cast, stage crew, and pit orchestra, are excited to present the Tony Award winning musical “Hello, Dolly!” on Friday, February 9, at 7:30pm; Saturday, February 10 at 7:30pm; and Sunday, February 11 at 2:30pm; in the Owego-Apalachin Theater within the OA Middle School at Sheldon Guile Boulevard in Owego. First produced on Broadway in 1964 by David Merrick, “Hello, Dolly!” won 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The show has become one of the most enduring musical hits, with four Broadway revivals, most recently starring Bette Midler in the title role. In 1969, Barbra Streisand starred in the film version. The musical takes place in the 1890s in New York City. Widow Dolly Levi (Ellie Casterline) is a bold socialite turned matchmaker. Her latest clients are the argumentative “half-a-millionaire” Horace Vandergelder (Nic Hulbert) and a young artist named Ambrose (Andrew Clark), who is in love with Horace’s niece, Ermengarde (Abigail Murtha). Dolly’s scheming soon involves Horace’s employees, Cornelius and Barnaby (Camden Dyer-DeCator and Colby Selover), as well as a New York milliner
Irene Molloy (Abigail Dove) and her friend Minnie Fay (Olivia Holt). Dolly uses these other schemes to cover up her own romantic desires. Megan Burrell and Mike Meaney codirect the cast of 50 students in support of Dolly’s schemes, while Katherine Gould has choreographed entertaining numbers. Under the technical direction of Nate Brown and artistic direction of Christine Crossgrove, the stage is transformed with beautiful Victorian sets. Colleen Dewey-Wright will have the cast in full costume to add to the story. Well-known songs “Put on Your Sunday Clothes” and “Hello, Dolly” are played by the wonderful pit orchestra directed by Nicholas Olesko. Waverly Student Awarded Scholarship A Tioga County resident has been awarded a $4,000 “Academic Distinction Scholarship” to attend Alfred State. Cameron Barton of Waverly is slated to graduate in 2018 from Waverly High School and has been accepted into the construction management (BS) program. The “Academic Distinction Scholarship” is awarded to first-time freshmen students who possess an 87 or better cumulative high school average through the end of their junior year; at least an 1140 combined reading/writing and math SAT or 23 composite ACT score is required.

Long Term Care Ombudsman Program - Feb. 16 Many residents in long-term care facilities have family or friends who visit and help them adjust to living in their new home. But what does a resident do when no one is around? Who is there to explain their rights as residents? Oftentimes, long-term care facilities’ rules and regulations are difficult to navigate on one’s own. The Long Term Care Ombudsman Program is available to support individuals living in long-term care facilities. Action for Older Persons will present information on this program on the Friday, February 16, from 2:00 to 3:00 pm, at the Coun-

This presentation will offer a brief history of the Ombudsman program, and will describe its critical role in supporting residents, family members, and facility staff. All proceeds go to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

New Executive Director at Waterman Center The board for the Waterman Conservation Education Center in Apalachin announced the appointment of Christopher Audette as Executive Director. Audette has a B.S. in Biology from Paul Smiths College, and recently completed a Peace Corps assignment as an Agroforestry Extension Agent and a position as Marketing and Facilities manager for the Swiss non-profit Help2Kids in Malawi, Africa.
Vestal High School student actors will bring the magical romance of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” to life this month with five performances presented by special arrangement Music Theatre International. Show times are 7:00 pm on February 22 and 23, 1:00 pm and 7:00 pm on Saturday, February 24, and 1:00 pm on Sunday, February 25. Director Austin Kiley leads a cast of over 60 student performers and 25 crew. Conducting the orchestra is Ernest Backus, Quinn Singer is choreographer and fight choreographer is Josh Sedelmeyer.
