Tioga Downs Begins 16th Racing Season

Number 5

Memorial Day - May 31

Tioga Downs in Nichols celebrated its 15th Anniversary with the opening of its 16th racing season on May 1, 2021. There will be 59 days of racing this season which ends on September 25. Post time is 6:15 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and 1:00 pm on Sundays. For a complete list of race dates and times go to: www.TiogaDowns.com

Memorial Day 1971

Kiwanis Club of Owego to Broadcast 59th Annual Radio Day - May 15

Tioga County will remember its fallen heroes on Memorial Day, May 31. Memorial Day events will be livestreamed on WEBO AM/FM from their North Avenue studio - the Honored Roll Call from 8:15 to 10:20 am with Mary Beth Jones and Jo Ann Walter followed at 10:20 am with the Remembrance Service with Jim Raftis. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, it is not possible to have the traditional parade and Rememberance Service at the veterans memorial this year. But like last year, there will be a special Patriotic Vehicle Convoy which will drive by the veterans memorial and through downtown and some residential streets. Vehicles in the convoy will be occupied by a veteran who served our country. You can view the convoy from the lawn

or sidewalk - no gatherings will be allowed along the route. Because Memorial Day is traditionally a day of mourning, flags will remain at half staff from sunrise until Noon (to honor our fallen heroes) and at full staff the remainder of the day (to honor living veterans). Other ways to honor veterans include: wear a red poppy, visit veterans graves, place flowers or flags at veterans’ graves, pause at 3:00 pm for the National Day of Remembrance, watch the National Memorial Day Concert live from the U.S. Capitol, be thankful of fallen soldiers, and extend your thoughts and prayers to families of veterans. It is important to keep the tradition of the Memorial Day convoy/ parade alive and keep the meaning of ‘memorial’ in this sacred day.

Owego’s Strawberry Festival Canceled Again This Year Fred Brown File Photo: RADIO DAY 2013

The Kiwanis Club of Owego is thrilled to be broadcasting its 59th Annual Radio Day on Saturday, May 15, 2021, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Kiwanis members will become DJs for the day, taking over WEBO Your Hometown Station (98.5, 101.3, 105.1, 107.9 FM and 1330 AM). The live remote broadcast will come from the Owego Parkview at 145 Front Street in Owego. The goal is to raise $10,000 to help support non-profit youthoriented programs in our community. The club provides support to Waterman Conservation Center, Tioga County Boys and Girls Club, Camp Ahwaga, VFW Summer Picnic and Children’s Christmas Party, the Owego and Candor High School Key Clubs, Owego Little League and Softball League, Owego Gymnastics, Ti-Ahwaga Players Youth Program, Tioga County Envirothon,

Tioga United Way, Kamp Kiwanis, and the Tioga County Rural Ministry. Kiwanis Club of Owego is encouraging everyone to participate by making a donation to this event. Donations can be made in person or mailed to Owego Kiwanis, PO Box 335, Owego, NY 13827. Contributors will have their names and or businesses mentioned throughout the broadcast day. In addition, the Kiwanis Club of Owego will also be collecting pantry supplies for the Tioga County Rural Ministry. Food donations may be dropped off at the Parkview during the event. For more information, go to Facebook: @owegokiwanisclub, or join the Kiwanis Thursdays at Noon at their current meeting location, the Ti-Ahwaga Performing Arts Center at 42 Delphine St. in Owego.

The Historic Owego Marketplace (HOM) Board of Directors unamimously voted to cancel the 2021 Strawberry Festival. “Attempting an altered or scaled back event proves difficult logistical-

ly and financially, even if restrictions are lifted by June,” said HOM board member Bradley Crews. “We are very optimistic this local tradition will return in 2022 as the event we’ve all come to love.”

At the Apalachin Library

719 Main St., Apalachin, NY 625-3333 Welcome Back The Apalachin Library is offering appointments to come in to browse or use its computers on Mondays and Thursdays from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Saturdays 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Appointments will be 20 minutes long. Call the library (625-3333) to reserve a spot. Masks are a must and there will be hand sanitizer at the door. The librarians will be so glad to see you again. Curbside service will still be offered. Children’s Room Wait until you see what has grown in the children’s room thanks to the Apalachin Library’s very talented artist and theater person, Brianna. During this year things have changed a lot in the library and most especially in the children’s room. Many new books have been added, too. May 31, Memorial Day The library will be closed on Memorial day, Monday, May 31. Picnic Tables in the Pavilion There are three new picnic tables in the library’s pavilion thanks to Eagle Scout candidate Austin Tompkins. Thank you to Austin and his helpers for making this wonderful addition to the pavilion. The tables will make the pavilion much more usable. Job Now Database Available Job Now is a database available on the Finger Lakes Library System (FLLS) website and available to you. Log in with your library card number and password to see information about resumes, job interviews, and other career resources. Leaving Our Fingerprints FLLS has partnered with the Southern Adirondack Library System (SALS) for a new project, Leaving Our Fingerprints: A People’s History of COVID19. Erica Freudenberger and Jack Scott at SALS have developed a public website where people can share their story of the COVID-19 pandemic. Surveys have been created to collect responses that will be uploaded to the website and placed into special exhibits. Respondents can include text and images. All information collected will be anonymous. To participate, go to tinyurl.com/ shareyourstory-flls. Meet Library Assistant Brianna Brianna O’Neill is one of the library

assistants. She was raised in Binghamton where she developed a love of sewing and theater. She studied costume technology at Purchase College, then moved to NYC and spent the next 12 years working on Broadway costumes. While specializing in custom beading, Bri made everything from Aladdin’s “Genie” costume to Helen Miren’s Queen Elizabeth costume and more Rockettes costumes than she can count. The library is lucky to have her. Summer Reading Summer Reading is coming soon to a library near you. The librarians are planning lots of summer fun for kids of all ages. The Book Barn The Book Barn is now open when the library is open again as long as everyone follows the Covid rules. Always wear a mask over your nose and mouth (even if you’re vaccinated). Use hand sanitizer. Only one person or family at a time and limit your time if others are waiting. There is a large number of cookbooks right now and the library will keep them for the month of May. Because of space issues, the library will not have them after May 31. Stop in this month and see what’s there. Thank You Thank you to Mel Baburchak for working on putting the library’s garden back together. The library’s beautiful front garden was destroyed when the new sewer system was put in. Mel is working on getting it back in shape. Keep watching the progress. Maker Space Room The Maker Space room is looking great. Hopefully it won’t be too long before the library will be having classes where you can learn new things and have fun. Is there something you’re interested in? Some type of craft or hobby? If you have ideas, let a librarian know. Little Blue Food Cupboard The libary’s Little Blue Food Cupboard on the front porch has lots of goodies to share. If you can use anything that is in it, please take it. That’s why it’s there. And thank you to all who have brought things to add. We all need to support each other – especially through this difficult time of Covid.

50 Years Ago May 1971 It’s May 1971. Amtrak begins operation with 184 trains. It’s the tenth anniversary of the first U.S. spaceflight by Alan B. Shepard, Jr., aboard Freedom 7. The postage rate rises from six cents to eight cents. NBC announces that its peacock will no longer introduce every program. The Senate agrees to appoint girl pages. Virginia O’Hanlon, 81, dies. When she was 8 years old, the New York Sun responded to her letter with the answer, “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.” Ogden Nash, poet of nonsense verse, dies at age 68. Audie Murphy, 46, is killed in a plane crash. The World War II hero earned more medals than any other soldier (24 from the American government, 3 from the French, and 1 from the Belgians). He also starred in the film “To Hell and Back,” an account of his war days. In the Village of Owego, construction is underway on the new Town of Owego Highway Department garage on Delphine Street. The total cost will be just under $100,000. The Owego Town Board endorses and approves a proposal by the Tioga County Board of Supervisors on a reapportionment plan to form a Tioga County legislature. The Owego Boys Club celebrates its 25th anniversary. Montogomery Ward announces plans to build a new store at the Tri-City Mall which is planned for Johnson City. The

store is expected to open in late 1972 and will replace the store in downtown Binghamton. Owego optometrist Dr. Stephen Solomon states that the safest colors for fire trucks are greenish-yellow and yellow. At Owego Free Academy, about 107 students play hookey on an unauthorized Senior Skip Day. One thousand sixth-graders from Tioga County attend the annual conservation field day at the Howard Cole Farm on McLean Road in Owego. Officials of the Montrose area school district say 1971 will probably be the last year for the one-room schoolhouse in Little Meadows. Nearly 1,000 students graduate from the State University at Binghamton at a ceremony held on campus in the men’s gymnasium. Thursday night TV shows include “Flip Wilson,” “Family Affair,” “Alias Smith and Jones,” “Lancer,” “Bewitched,” and “Dan August” starring Burt Reynolds. Movies playing in local theaters include “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Wuthering Heights,” “Ryan’s Daughter,” and “Son of Flubber.” Top tunes include “Brown Sugar” by the Rolling Stones, “Never Can Say Goodbye” by Jackson 5, “Want Ads” by Honey Cone, and “It Don’t Come Easy” by Ringo Starr. And a 5-pound box of Miracle Gro costs $3.00 and a dozen bedding plants (petunia, marigolds, or pansies) costs 75 cents.
