The Tioga County Agricultural Society announced that the 2021 Tioga County Fair is officially “A Go!” The Tioga County Fair will run Tuesday, August 10, through Saturday, August 14, with lots of exciting attractions on tap for the Biggest Event in Tioga County this year. Starting Tuesday night (August 10), the fully sanctioned Painted Pony Championship Rodeo thunders into town with competitors from all over the world. Come experience bull riding, barrel racing, calf roping, and more. Saturday’s (August 14) feature event is the Famous Outlaw Pulling series Tractor and Truck Pulls. Wednesday, August 11, and Friday, August 13, crowd favorites are the Demolition Derbies with multi-

ple heats and Big Cash Prizes. Don’t miss the spectacular fireworks show on Thursday, August 12. Once again, the fair will host the Gillette family carnival. More than 150 out-of-town guests registered for the 127th annual Central New York Firemen’s Association (CNYFA) convention July 8 through 11 in downtown Owego will make an economic impact for the area as the region slowly comes out of COVID-19 restrictions. Representing 20 counties comprised of 500 fire departments, participants will be in Owego from as far away as Utica and Syracuse as guests of Owego Hose Teams, Inc. and the Owego Fire Department.

The Legion is hosting the Thursday night (July 8) welcome reception and Sunday (July 11) goodbye breakfast. They will also have firefighter themed drink specials for viewing the Grand Firefighter’s Parade Saturday at 5:00 pm. These events are open to the public. The VFW is serving as convention headquarters Saturday (July 10) that includes the convention lunch and dinner. Tickets are needed to attend the dinner and can be purchased on the Hose Team website. Fireworks at Draper Park on Friday (July 9) evening start at 9:30 pm. The Parkview will stay open to accommodate those wishing to have a front row seat for the display. From 9:00 pm to midnight, live entertainment will be at the Barleycorn Tavern. Owned by Croton Hose Co. #3 Life Member Steve Eschler, the tavern is a former firehouse, fitting for the convention afterparty to be there Friday night. The Beatles Band was scheduled to play but is a lastminute cancellation due to a band member medical emergency. Storm Front will play in their place. Saturday’s convention afterparty takes place at the Rainbow Trail on North Avenue with three bands starting at 6:00 pm. The Kitchen Sink Band, Blues Brothers of Central New York, and The Gents are on the bill. Lion Naomi Rupright presented the 2021 Lion of the Year Award to Lion Bob Jensen

Twice a month, the members of the nonprofit Apalachin Lions Club meet at Donoli’s restaurant in Apalachin to discuss activities to serve the communities of Apalachin, Campville, and Little Meadows. The club’s 65th year of service was quite a unique challenge due to COVID virus driven restrictions. Their annual projects normally include a Back-to-School Program, Special Olympics, Christmas Baskets, Easter Egg Hunt, Children Eye Screening, and Highway Cleanups, all of which had to be cancelled. Efforts were modified to provide donations to local food banks to help those in need. Fundraising activities were evaluated and adjusted to include Doug’s Fish Fry and All Year

Broom Sale activities. At a recent installation meeting, one Lion was honored for his commitment to the Lion’s Motto of We Serve. Naomi Rupright, the 2019 Lion of the Year, presented the 2021 Lion of the Year Award to Past District Governor (PDG) Lion Bob Jensen. Bob was chosen by previous winners of the award for his outstanding service and devotion to club activities. 12-and-13-Year-Olds Authorized to Hunt Deer with Firearm or Crossbow The Tioga County Legislature adopted Local Law No. 3 of 2021 at the Legislature’s regular monthly meeting on June 15, 2021. The local law permits 12-and-13-year-olds to hunt deer with firearms and crossbows under the supervision of an adult licensed hunter. Like adults, junior hunters must take and pass the proper coursework to obtain a NYS hunting license. Under the local law, both adult and youth hunters are re-

quired to wear fluorescent orange or pink clothing while engaged in hunting. The change in law at the local level comes after New York State included language as part of the 2021-2022 State Budget allowing junior hunters to use firearms for deer hunting in counties that pass a local law. The local law in Tioga County goes into effect immediately.

Tioga Downs Casino Resort is excited to announce their 2021 Summer Concert Series. Mirabito Energy Products is back as the title sponsor for the Summer Concert Series, with Pepsi returning as a series cosponsor. After being closed last year, the casino resort is more excited than ever to bring three new bands to rock out with Tioga Downs guests. Starting the excitement is Blood, Sweat & Tears on July 29. This jazz rock group has been rocking since the 1960s and has recently picked up a new singer, Keith Paluso, after his appearance on The Voice. Tickets are $30 for general admission and $50 for reserved seats. The second act in this series is Tanya Tucker on August 20. Tucker is a country musician who had her first hit in 1972 when she was 13, and has continued to create hit after hit since then. Tickets are $20 and 100% of the sales will benefit the Southern Tier Veterans Support Group.

Finishing up the summer concert is Cheap Trick on September 10, sponsored by Tioga State Bank. This Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame inductee has been making headlines since 1974 and plans to continue rocking at Tioga Downs late summer. Summerfest in Newark Valley is ON! This year’s Newark Valley Summerfest will be held on Saturday, July 31, and feature music, food, a duck race, fireworks, and lots of fun. The NV Summerfest will be held in two locations: the Village Green (Rt. 38) and at the Depot (Depot Street). The fun will start at 9:00 am and end at 4:00 pm on the Green and at 9:00 pm at the Depot. There will be crafters and vendors, food trucks, chicken BBQ, music, classic cars, firetrucks, face painting and more. This year’s Duck Race will have a special twist - a man-made stream in the railroad tracks. The Newark Valley Fire Department will supply the water as the ducks are released. Duck race tickets are available at several local businesses in Newark Valley, Richford, and Berkshire. Make sure to get your Lone Duck or Quacker Pack of tickets for your chance to win. Tickets will be available at the NTCC booth the day of the race until 1:00pm. Also new this year is a Teddy Bear Parade for young children preschool through Kindergarten. The children can bring their favorite Teddy Bear or stuffed animal and dress them up (as well as themselves) to carry or pull in a wagon, etc. The parade will begin at 12:00 Noon at

the Depot. ROWDY from the RUMBLE PONIES will be leading the parade. There will be no regular parade this year due to lack of responses, possibly COVID related. Summerfest will close with fireworks which will be set off from Cook’s Hill which means the fireworks will be visible for miles around. Fireworks will start approximately at 9:00 pm with WEBO providing music for people to tune into from their home or their vehicle. Watch them from home, the Village, the NV High School or the soccer fields across from Bement Billings Farmstead—or just look up! Dangers of Placing Rechargeable Batteries in Recycling Bins or Carts You can help prevent fires in recycling trucks and at recycling facilities by keeping Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) and other rechargeable batteries out of your recycling bin or cart. Instead, take them to one of the many local drop off locations. The potential for an explosion or fire is significant when rechargeable batteries are improperly disposed of. Lithium Ion batteries are one of the leading causes of recycling truck fires. In fact, there was a fire at the local Material Recovery Facility in January 2020 due to an improperly disposed of Lithium Ion battery. Luckily no one was injured; however, properly disposing of your cellphones and any rechargeable batteries, especially Lithium Ion variety, is crucial to avoid dangerous fires and ensure safety. Some have suggested the cause for improper disposal of rechargeable batteries is likely due to a common misconception. When an item states it is “recyclable” many assume that you can recycle it in your recycling bin or cart; this is not the case. It is also important to note that rechargeable batteries cannot be disposed of in your trash either. Although the back of a trash truck is usually wetter and less likely to feed the sparks from these batteries and start a fire, they are still considered a household hazardous waste. They pose numerous health and environmental hazards. When you discard them, they must

be disposed of at a battery recycling drop off location, NOT placed in the trash or your recycling bin/cart. Tioga Arts Council (TAC) last month launched its new youth gallery with a special exhibition titled Generations. The exhibition featured artwork from TAC patron artists and families, paying tribute to all those community members who have contributed to TAC in the past and present and to those who will keep it vibrant and creative in the years to come.

The exhibition is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, now through August 21. The purpose of the youth gallery is to establish a space where youth can display artwork in a professional arts organization, year-round. The goals of this new space are: 1) to champion youth art, 2) to encourage artistic expression among children and teenagers, 3) to provide a public space for such expression, and 4) to serve as a vehicle for arts education in Tioga County.

On October 28, 2020, Fannie C. Hyde Charitable Trust awarded $8,498 to TAC in order to create a Children’s Gallery Space and Zine Library in the back portion of the TAC building at 179 Front Street in Owego. In December 2020 and January 2021, volunteers began to clean out the space and prepare for demolition. An additional $1,000’s worth of work was donated by the following volunteers / TAC Board of Directors members: T. Benjamin Hobbs, Stanton Hill Studios; Tim Jackson, Tim Jackson Designs & Katie’s Kreations; Darryl Lindsay, M & T Bank; Suzanne Poe, Cloud Croft Studios; and Brandon Smith, Scott, Smith & Son. In February and March 2021, renovations were completed by TAC’s friends and business partners: Ahwaga Paint & Flooring Covering, Rick Arnold Mike Hatton, and Phil Pozzi.

A ribbon cutting cerermony was held on June 22 at State Line Auto in Waverly, NY. After thirteen years in the planning stages, this is a collaborative project between General Motors Financial, Gold Star Resources, Norfolk Southern, State Line Auto Auction, and Waverly Trade Center. “Soap for Hope” Bins Overflow Tioga County Rural Ministry (TCRM) offers profuse thanks to the community for the abundant supply of personal care and household cleaning items dontaed to TCRM by

38 businesses, churches, and organizations during May and June. Due to the community’s outstanding generosity, TCRM accumulated more than 4,500 products that will be given to local residents in need. “Soap for Hope” is a neighbor helping neighbor initiative that provides hope to TCRM’s pantry patrons.

Leadership Program for Teenage Girls is Open for Registration Global Leadership Now (GLN), an amazing leadership program opportunity for teenage girls, is now open for registration. This year marks the 8th year that young women will have the chance to grow their leadership skills and leave as GLN 8 graduates. The mission of GLN is to empower future female leaders to be a change maker for themselves, their community, and their world. By building self-confidence, creativity, self-worth, and passion, leaders are given the opportunity to reach their full potential, while inspiring others to do the same. New Assistant Principal at Vestal High School The Vestal Central School District announced that Jennifer Bittler has been selected as an assistant principal of Vestal High School. Mrs. Bittler comes to Vestal with 19 years of teaching experience, as well as four years serving as a Literacy Collaborative Coordinator for Union-Endicott Central Schools. She assumed her new duties on July 1, 2021. Mrs. Bittler began her teaching career as a Kindergarten and firstgrade teacher at Cedarhurst Elementary School in the Susquehanna Valley School District. She joined the Union-Endicott School District in 2005 where she supported students as a Reading Specialist and provided ELA, Math and AIS services at George F. Johnson, Ann McGuinness and Linneaus West Elementary Schools. Her educational resumé includes a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education as well as a Master’s in Literacy Education from SUNY Cortland, and her Literacy Collaborative Intermediate Certification from Lesley University. Finally, she earned her Educational Leadership Certificate of Advanced Studies (SDL/SBL) from Binghamton University. In addition to her teaching, district literacy collaboration and intervention support, Mrs. Bittler served as an Administrative Intern for Un-

Owego Fallen Firefighter Memorial Golf Tournament - Sept. 11 The Owego Fire Department will hold its 9th Annual Captain and Crew Golf Tournament at Catatonk Golf Club on September 11, 2021. Registration begins at 9:30 am with a shotgun start of 10:28 am, the time the first tower fell on 9/11/2001. Just $320 per team (4), it includes 18 holes of golf with cart, awards, as well as dinner at the end of the tournament. The tournament was started to honor fallen firefighters that passed in the line of duty. This year the tournament takes on an even greater remembrance as it will take place on September 11th, and will honor those lost on that terrible day. It was a pleasure to see friends and neighbors socialize, while enjoying the weather, food, shortcake, and entertainment. Ridin’ The Rails to Perform in Owego - July 10 2 Shows at Tioga Historical Museum

Ridin’ the Rails is an entertaining look at the American Railroad through song and story with a three-piece band consisting of Darrel Varley (vocals, guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle), Doug Roberts (vocals, guitar, and uke) and Jim

Hardaway (vocals, bass, and guitar) performing songs relating to trains. The group will give two performances at the Tioga County Historical Society in Owego next to the Susquehanna River on Saturday, July 10, at 2:00 pm and at 3:00 pm. Cost is $10 for adults, $16 for couples, $5 for children 12 and up, and free for children under 12. Tickets are available at the door. A sampling of some of the tunes they play include “Wabash Cannonball,” “Steel Rail Blues,” “Petticoat Junction,” “Midnight Special,” “500 Miles,” "King of the Road,” “Last Train to Clarksville,” “The Gambler,” and “Gotta Travel
