153rd Tioga County Fair - August 6 - 10
The 34th Annual Tioga Region AACA Car Show and Flea Market will be held on Sunday, August 18, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, at the Campville Commons. Admission is $2 per person or $5 per carload. Admission is free for children 12 and younger. Tioga County Rural Ministries will be collecting donations of soaps, toiletries and non-perishable foods at the gate.
FanDuel Group and Tioga Downs Open Sportsbook in New York
Last month, FanDuel Group opened the company’s first retail sportsbook in New York State, located at Tioga Downs Casino Resort in Nichols. Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo from NY District 123rd made the ceremonial first bet as part of a ribbon-cutting ceremony. FanDuel’s new 2,600 square foot sports betting retail location is conveniently located near the main entrance of the Tioga Downs Casino. The FanDuel Sportsbook features 8 betting windows, 27 video displays including a large video wall, 14 self service betting kiosks from IGTPlayDigital, 3 sports tickers, 12 lounge seats, 7 high tables, two drink rails, and seating for more than 50 customers. FanDuel will provide its first class risk and trading
platform and manage the location in partnership with Tioga Downs Casino Resort and will leverage IGT PlayDigital’s retail sports betting technology. The FanDuel Sportsbook will feature bets on all major U.S. sports, including professional baseball, soccer, football, basketball, golf, boxing, motorsports racing, and more. The FanDuel Sportsbook at Tioga Downs Casino Resort marks FanDuel Group’s fourth retail operation. The company opened the first-ever FanDuel Sportsbook located at New Meadowlands Racetrack last July, followed by a location at The Greenbrier in West Virginia last fall and most recently at the Valley Forge Casino Resort in Pennsylvania.
The 2019 Tioga County Fair returns to the Fairgrounds at Marvin Park in Owego, on Tuesday, August 6 through August 10. The fair begins with the Painted Pony Championship Rodeo on Tuesday, August 6. There will be world class bull riding, bronco busting, calf roping, and barrel racing. The Dash for Cash is a horse race for local riders on Tuesday, too. They will compete for cash prizes. There will be three full nights of fun and entertainment including demo derby, concerts, the Butterfly Encounter, Shadows of the Old
West, 4-H shows and livestock competitions, tractor pulls, horse pulls, lumberjack competition, and rides and games by Gillette Midway Entertainment. The arts and crafts barns welcome your art, craft, upcycle, paint, baked goods, garden produce and more. New this year, is The Tallest Corn stalk contest. All contests are free to enter. Fireman’s Fountain to be Rededicated The Baker Fireman’s Fountain will be rededicated at 9:00 am on Saturday, August 24, at the site of the fountain in courthouse square in downtown Owego. A grand firefighter’s parade is scheduled for 10:30 am in downtown Owego. A firematic hose race will take place on lower Front Street starting at Noon. The day’s events conclude at the Rainbow Trail with music by The Gents starting at 5:00 pm. On Friday night, August 23, in celebration of the fountain’s return, a dinner will be held at VFW Post #1371 that includes an old-fashioned Italian menu catered by Mario’s Pizza with beer, wine, and soda. Commemorative items
provided to each attendee include a stainless-steel beer mug, wooden nickel, and memorial lanyard. Cocktail hour starts at 6:00 pm, with dinner and presentations at 7:00 pm.. The Beatles Band will play from 9:00 pm to midnight. The public is invited to all events. Tickets for the dinner are on sale at www.OwegoHoseTeams.com.

Nizalowski (above, left), originally from Newark Valley, will read from his most recent publication “Chronicles of the Forbidden” in which he relays his expericnces hiking and exploring the west, at times with his two young daughters. “Chronicles” is said to possess an “authentic voice of the land… and a deep knowledge of American Indian Lore”. Nizalowski teaches
mythology, creative writing, and composition at Colorado Mesa University. On Saturday, August 10, Katie Vaz (above, right) of Endicott will unveil her third book, “The Escape Manual for Introverts.” The book details funny and absurd ways to escape painfully awkward social situations. “Escape” is filled with Vaz’s signature hand-lettering and illustrations, from the silly to the sincere. Owego Hose Team Company #3 team, affectionately known as the Flat Rats, won the coveted Central New York firematic hose racing title at the 126th Annual Central New York Firemen’s Association (CNYFA) convention held in Homer, NY, in July. Company #3 knocked off Owego Hose Team Company #1. Sporting new uniforms replicating the purple and gold worn by the hose teams in the 1970s, four Owego teams participated in the firefighter events. The Company #1 team was leading the competition where firefighters test their skills scoring first places in both the ladder and wye races. Company #3 battled back in water ball with a thirdplace finish tying Company #1 with 11 points overall points. #3 team members Nick Jerzak, Mike MacNaughton, Joe Morabito, Jimmy Morris, and Hank Thomas were declared the tournament winners in a tiebreaker. Six teams participated in the firematic events with four teams from Owego, Sennett and LaFayette Fire Departments. Hose races improve basic firefighting skills. It was also announced Owego Hose Teams in partnership with the Owego Fire Department will host the 2020 Central convention July 9 to July 12, 2020. Events will include fire service meetings, firefighter memorial service, block party, firefighter parade, and hose races. Hundred of firefighters from Central

Apalachin Lions Club 30th Back-to-School Program The first day of school is a day of new experiences, new friends, and new clothes. Unfortunately, not all families are able to buy new clothing or school supplies for that all-important opening day. The Apalachin Lions Club has been conducting a “Back-to-School” program for the last 29 years, this year with cooperation from Binghamton Boscov’s. The program furnishes gift vouchers to eligible families, helping to defray some of the cost of getting their children
equipped for school. People living in the ZIP Code areas of Apalachin (13732), Campville (13760), and Little Meadows, PA (18830) can obtain information on eligibility and the application. On Saturday, August 2, law enforcement officers throughout New York State participated in “Cops on Top” - the officers were stationed on top of Dunkin’ Donuts locations to raise awareness and collect donations for athletes of the Special Olympics New York. In Tioga County, members of the Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol, Criminal Investigation Division, and Communications Division were atop the Dunkin’ Donuts in Apalachin. They raised approximately $4,000 during the event. All proceeds of “Cops on Top” will benefit the Special Olympics New York.

Last year, Jeff Gural, owner of Tioga Downs Casino Resort, launched The Tioga Downs Regional Community Foundation which will award $1,000,000 annually to contribute to community development in the counties surrounding Tioga Downs Casino Resort. The goal of the foundation is to provide financial support to charitable organizations that combat poverty and contribute to community enhancement. The first $250,000 in funding went to 16 non-profit organizations in January 2019. The Evening Times (Sayre, Pennsylvania) Thu, Aug 21, 1969 (now the Morning Times) 'The Hickories' Park to Receive National Acclaim Tioga County's newest park, “The Hickories,” will receive national publicity due to a photograph appearing in a local newspaper. This all came about when Sgt. Fred Stearns, public relations specialist attached to the United State Army Concert Band, requested copies of news releases of the Aug. 6 performance of the Army Band at On-The-Green near Owego. Al Tucker, concert chairman for the Tioga County Chamber of Commerce forwarded a tear sheet of a front page story from a local newspaper. The story included a picture taken by staff photographer, Fred Brown. The picture was an elevated perspective taken from the rear of the grandstand and included a segment of the 7500 persons attending the tour performance.
Following the receipt of the tear sheet there were 48 hours of telephone calls between the Pentagon and Tioga County. For six years, apparently, the Army had been searching for this type of photograph, one capturing the band inconcert and the audience. A chamber staff member commented, after the barrage of telephone calls had ended: “It’s nice to know this will become their official photograph, and it may have a million dollar tourist value, ultimately for our little county, but for a while it began to look like a World War II message center during a critical operation.” This was the band’s second visit in nine months. A mix up in mail between upstate Oswego and down state Owego brought it to this latter community when chamber officials responded, resulting in a packed house for the performance and its second visit.

Montour Family Apartments, LP The Home Textile Tool Museum (HTTM) celebrated its 20th anniversary on August 3 with a wide array of demonstrations and tours of the museum. A short program featured remarks by members of the HTTM board of directors in the restored timber-frame threshing barn, followed by light refreshments. Special demonstrations for Homesteading Day included soap making, rug making, chair caning, and processing sheep’s fleece into a shawl. The final day of the HTTM season – Saturday, August 24 - offers the unique experience of a Wool Waulking Day with the Black Sheep Spinning Guild from Ithaca. Waulking is the process of finishing wool cloth that has been woven on a loom. The process historically involved soaking (sometimes in urine), pounding, pulling and stretching the cloth to soften the fibers. It is a group activity practiced in various ways around the world (sometimes also referred to as “milling,” “fulling” or “tucking”). In Scotland, there is a tradition of singing in the
Gaelic language while doing the work. At HTTM, visitors and staff will finish a tweed fabric woven at the museum. Information about the process will be shared and singing may occur to accompany the task (but no bag pipes expected). The Home Textile Tool Museum is located in the idyllic village of Orwell, Pennsylvani, and celebrates the many aspects of at-home fiber processing and cloth production in our region in the early 1800’s. HTTM is located at 1819 Orwell Hill Road on State Rte. 1036 and is open Saturdays from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm through August 24. Saturday admission is $5 for adults and free for children under 12. Cool Summer Salad Recipes Cucumber Tomato Salad 2 Teaspoons coriander seeds 2 Teaspoons mustard seeds 1 Teaspoon cumin seeds 1 Small red onion, thinly sliced 1 Cup cider vinegar 1 Tablespoon sugar Salt to taste 3 Large tomatoes, diced into bite size pieces 1 Cucumber, diced into bite-size pieces 1 Tablespoon olive oil 1/3 Cup cilantro Cook coriander, mustard and cumin seeds in a large saucepan until they begin to pop and become fragrant. Then add vinegar, sugar, salt and one cup water and simmer for two minutes. In a small bowl add onions and seed mixture. Refrigerate for one hour. When ready to serve, remove onions from mixture and place into a large salad bowl with the tomatoes, cucumber, and cilantro. Toss and drizzle with olive oil. Chicken and Peach Salad with Balsamic-Honey Vinaigrette Grilled Chicken: 1 Pound boneless chicken breasts 3 Tablespoons olive oil 2 Cloves garlic, minced 1 Tablespoon lemon juice Salt and Pepper Vinaigrette: 1/3 Cup olive oil 3 Tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1 Tablespoon honey 1 Teaspoon Dijon mustard Salt and pepper Salad: 2 Cups spinach 1 Cup Arugula 1 Pound peaches, sliced 2 Cups corn kernels 1/2 Cup pecans, chopped 1 Small red onion, sliced 4 Ounces Feta Cheese In a large sealable bag add chicken, olive oil, garlic, lemon juice and salt and
pepper. Place in fridge and let marinate for 30 minutes or longer if time is allowed. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Once the chicken has marinated, place mixture in a baking dish and cook for 25 minutes, flipping the chicken breasts halfway through. While the chicken is cooking, add olive oil, balsamic vinegar, honey, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper in a small bowl and whisk until well combined. Place in fridge. In a large bowl add spinach, arugula, peaches, corn, pecans, red onion and toss together lightly. Then sprinkle feta cheese on top. Slice the chicken, add on top of salad and drizzle with balsamic vinaigrette when ready to serve. Avocado Strawberry Spinach Salad with Poppy Seed Dressing 6 Cups baby spinach 1 Pint strawberries, sliced 1 Avocado, diced 4 Ounces blue cheese or feta cheese 1/4 Cup slivered almonds 1 small red onion, thinly sliced Poppy seed dressing: 1/3 Cup olive oil 3 Tablespoons red wine vinegar 2 Tablespoons honey 1 Tablespoon poppy seeds 2 Teaspoon dried mustard Salt and pepper In a small mixing bowl add olive oil, red wine vinegar, honey, poppy seeds and dried mustard and whisk until well combined. Add salt and pepper to taste and set in the fridge. In a large bowl add spinach, sliced strawberries, diced avocado, feta or blue cheese, slivered almonds and sliced red onion and toss. When ready to serve, add poppy seed dressing and toss.

Folk Art, Flintknapping Gathering A free Flintknapping Gathering II lead by Flintknapper Mike McGrath, will be held September 21, 9:00 to 11:30 am, at the Bement Billings Farmstead Museum, Route 38 in Newark Valley. Novice, beginner and advanced are invited to work together in this shared interest group. The public is invited to stop in and explore related topics with attendees such as how to locate resources, flint materials, and workshops available. This is an opportunity for those interested in working on their flintknapping skills to work in a group environment. Each participant brings own flint and tools (if they have them) and projects to work on. Bring related projects to display and discuss.
The ultimate goal is to promote a community of flintknappers and preserve these ancient skills for generations to come. This event is free and open to the public and will be held at the museum site. Oakley Doakley Dash & Ramble - August 24 The Oakley Doakley Dash & Ramble trail race will be held on Saturday, August 24, at 10:00 am at the Oakley Corners State Forest, Dutchtown Road and Hullsville Road in Owego (DEC Region 7). The course includes two distances: the Dash, a 4-mile course on the yellow trails of the southern section of the forest (beginner friendly), and the Ramble, a 10-mile course following the 4-mile course, then continuing on the northern section blue trails (more advanced trails). The start and finish will be placed near the parking area on State Lands Road north of the intersection of Dutch-
town and Hullsville Roads. The two courses will use the same start and finish location. Each runner will cross Dutchtown Road twice at the same location. The first road crossing will be in the beginning of the race to access the yellow trails; the second will be to return to the north section to either continue on to the longer course or to return to the Start/Finish area. New Principal at Vestal High School
Senator Fred Akshar and Broome County Executive Jason Garnar joined officials from En-Joie Golf Course and the DICK’S Sporting Goods Open to unveil new course renovations and upgrades ahead of this year’s DICK’S Sporting Goods Open PGA TOUR Champion’s event. The $350,000 upgrade includes: The re-engineering and construction of the spectator/tent area and wall at hole #18, replacing a 35-year-old crumbling structure; Pond liner installment and recontouring; Enhanced irrigation around green sides and fairway bunkers; and Various cart path and parking lot repairs. Operated by Broome County Community Charities Inc., the DICK’S Sporting Goods Open is the largest professional sporting event in Central New York. The weeklong tournament draws an estimated 100,000 people to En-Joie Golf Course in Endicott and generates an estimated $12-16 million in direct spending and economic activity to Endicott and the surrounding region. In 2018 alone, the tournament also contributed $830,000 to local advocacy organizations in 2018, and has donated nearly $17 million back to charity since the tournament’s inception. Senator Fred Akshar secured a $350,000 state grant to help fund the project. Senator Fred Akshar said, “The DICK’S Sporting Goods Open is not only an incredible and essential economic driver for the Southern Tier, it’s the marquee tourism attraction for our community. When you look at the millions of dollars this event generates for our local economy and millions the tournament contributes to local charities, these repairs and upgrades are a worthwhile investment in every aspect. I was proud to do my part in securing funding in Albany to generate a positive return on
investment for taxpayers in the 52nd Senate District.” “Events such as the DICKS’s Sporting Goods Open are one of the many phenomenal reasons to both visit and live in Broome County,” said Broome County Executive Jason Garnar. “Our team at En-Joie Golf Course does an amazing job ensuring the facilities are world-class and thank you to Senator Akshar for helping secure funding for these upgrades so that En-Joie can continue to draw people in from far and wide.” PGA Professional Michael Deuel said, “The funding secured by Senator Akshar for these much needed improvements at En-Joie will guarantee that we will be able to keep the golf course in top-notch shape all season long for our everyday golfers, as well as provide the best conditioned golf course possible for the touring professionals that visit each fall for the DICK’S Sporting Goods Open. The golf course is very thankful to Senator Akshar for securing this funding and we look forward to another fantastic DICK’S Sporting Goods Open in August.” DICK’S Sporting Goods, founded in adjacent Binghamton in 1948, has been the title sponsor of this tournament since 2007. This year will mark the 46th year of professional golf in the Southern Tier community. “We are so thankful that Senator Akshar realizes the importance of the DICK'S Sporting Goods Open to our community and are truly thankful for him securing this grant,” said Tournament Director John Karedes. The 2019 DSGO PGA Champion’s TOUR events tee off on August 12, concluding on August 18, and features Keith Urban in concert on Friday evening at the 18th green.
Vestal Central School District has announced that Dawn Young was selected as the newest principal at Vestal High School, effective July 1, 2019. She replaces Clifford Kasson, who assumed his duties as Assistant Superintendent of Finance, Operations and Personnel in March of this year. The District would like to again thank Dr. Albert Penna, who served as Interim Principal of Vestal High School during the transition period, for his diligent stewardship of our high school staff and students. Mrs. Young has been with Vestal Central School District since October 2017, serving as an Assistant Principal at the high school. Her educational experience includes almost two decades in the Binghamton City School District, where she held the positions of Challenge Enrichment Specialist & Coordinator, Instructional Technology Mentor and also Director of Educational Technology. Principal Young has a robust educa-
tional background with a B.A. in English Literature, M.A.T. (Master of Arts in Teaching) in Secondary English, graduate coursework in Special Education and her C.A.S. in Educational Leadership. Local Inn Nominated for USA Today’s Readers’ Choice Best Haunted Hotel Fainting Goat Island Inn in Nichols has been nominated by USA Today for their 2019 10 Best Readers’ Choice Travel Awards Contest competing for the Best Haunted Hotel in the United States. Readers can vote for their favorite haunted hotel at 10Best.com until August 19, 2019. Fainting Goat Island Inn was originally built as a railroad hotel and the current owners have restored it from a private home back to its former glory as a place for travelers to stay overnight. The inn is full of charm, and interesting characters, including fainting goats, as the name suggests. Other interesting “guests” that have made themselves comfortable at the inn include two spectral ladies that have been spotted having tea and overheard having a conversation. A child-sized stool has moved on its own and gumballs jump out of a candy machine on occasion, backing one intuitive guest’s claim that the most active spirit is a young boy. The guestbook is filled with praise for the inn and peppered with stories of sightings and noises, with some guests reporting that they heard footsteps on a staircase that no
longer exists. Guests who dare ask the owners to tell their chilling story about a doll and a knife that was found in the ceiling. Eerie Voices Paranormal Society claims to have confirmed ghostly activity at recent visit. Lion of the Year Award
Twice a month, the members of the Apalachin Lions Club meet at Donoli’s restaurant in Apalachin to discuss their next activity to promote a spirit of serving the communities of Apalachin, Campville and Little Meadows. Their annual projects include a Back to School Program, Special Olympics, Christmas Baskets, Easter Egg Hunt, Children Eye Screening and Highway Cleanup. At a recent meeting, one Lion was honored for her commitment to
the Lion’s Motto of “We Serve.” Lion Paul Huonker presented The Lion of the Year Award to Lion Naomi Rupright, who was chosen by previous winners of the award for her outstanding service and devotion to club activities. Family Development Credential Course Scheduled for 2020 in Tioga

Tioga Co. Property Development Demolitions in Owego, Waverly The Tioga County Property Development Corporation (TCPDC) is a NYS land bank that has been established as a nonprofit 501C3 organization as of January 2017. This organization was set up with the purpose of addressing Tioga County's inventory of distressed, vacant, abandoned, underutilized and taxforeclosed properties. Twelve problem properties in the Villages of Waverly and Owego have been identified and acquisition made possible by the Tioga County Legislature. An application to the State Attorney General's Community Revitalization Initiative (CRI) fund through Enterprise Community Partners, Inc. was submitted and $500,000.00 was awarded. This funding will start the work in elimination of slums and blight by demolition of six properties in Waverly and three properties in Owego beginning July 23, 2019. The first demolition at 117 Liberty Street in Owego occurred on July 23. The next demolition at 115-117 Chestnut Street, Owego, will be completed on July 25 with demolition of 39-41 Temple Street, Owego being completed on July 29.
The demolitions in Waverly including, 108 Park Street, 112 Park Street, 452 Cayuta Avenue, 530 Chemung Street, 127 Providence Street and 457 Fulton Street will begin on August 8th CRI funding is a source dedicated to Land Bank use and can be leveraged for numerous activities. The remaining three properties in Waverly are targeted for rehabilitation over the next six months. TCPDC is taking those essential first steps toward achieving healthier, more vital, and safer neighborhoods for all. Many other benefits occur because of these revitalization efforts, Martha Sauerbrey, TCPDC Chair and Tioga County Legislative Chair shared, “This program will encourage economic growth instead of allowing deterioration. It will help address the safety and health of our residents while stabilizing and transforming our neighborhoods.” Land banking began in New York following the passage of the New York Land Bank Act in 2011, which authorized the creation of land banks as a tool to address the impacts of property vacancy, abandonment and foreclosure across the state.
Family Development Credential (FDC) offered by UCONN is a nationally recognized professional development course and credentialing program for frontline family workers to learn and practice skills of strength-based family support with families. Workers learn to use family development skills in their professional and personal lives and help families develop their own goals of selfreliance. Tioga Opportunities, Inc. and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tioga County are partnering to offer the course in Tioga County. This course will begin on January 9 and end on July 9. To earn the credential, a worker must complete 90 hours of interactive classroom instruc-
tion based on the Empowerment Skills for Family Workers curriculum, prepare a skills portfolio with the support of a portfolio advisor, and pass the national credentialing exam. The course fee of $900 includes the credentialing fee and worker’s handbook. College credit hours and/or contact hours can be obtained at an additional cost. The FDC course is also eligible for documentation of training for the NYSPEP Parenting Education Credential applicants and renewals. “Channel Your Inner Diva” Roundtable Tioga Women Lead (TWL) is hosting a different type of event at Tioga Golf Club on August 21, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Previous events have featured speakers presenting women’s leadership training. Now, TWL wants to hear from local women and have a conversation on issues that women deal with on a regular basis in all aspects of their lives. “We have seen some great conversations happen when we ask for participation from the audience at our speakerfocused events. We wanted to expand that conversation and hear from local women about how they view these topics that women commonly deal with,” said Marte Sauerbrey of TWL. Five topics will be presented and small groups will discuss them at a round table. “We chose topics that were common to the TWL members and that we have heard are issues for the women that come to our events,” said Penny Bartlow of TWL and creator of Global Leadership Now, a leadership program for young women. Can you answer the question “Who am I and what do I want”? Are you able to celebrate your success and the success
of other women, or do you hold back? Do you ever feel like a fraud when someone recognizes your accomplishments? How do you handle difficult conversations? These are just some of the conversation that will be discussed. Whether you can relate to these questions or you can share your experiences in dealing with them, TWL wants to hear from you. “Tioga County has a growing community of women leaders, but whether it’s at work, at school, in your home, your church, or in a community group, we all struggle with some of these issues. This is a chance to learn from each other,” said LeeAnn Tinney of TWL. TWL is a group of professional, local, women leaders who are committed to advancing women’s leadership in Tioga County through empowerment, education, and experience.
