60th Anniversary of the Apalachin Raid
It’s said that everyone gets their 15 minutes of fame. If there’s a similar fate for towns, Apalachin’s “15 minutes of fame” came on a cloudy, rainy Thursday afternoon fifty years ago. It was in Apalachin on November 14, 1957, that two New York State Troopers interrupted the best-known Mafia gathering in the United States. Although 63 people were questioned, no arrests were made. But, the Apalachin raid proved for the first time - that an organized crime syndicate did exist. “Before that,” Investigator Vincent Vasisko was quoted as saying in 1989, “people thought there was no such thing as organized crime.” According to Joseph F. O’Brien and Andris Kurins, authors of “Boss of Bosses,” the Apalachin summit became the “dividing line between the “old” Mafia of Al Capone and Salvatore Maranzano and the “new” Mafia that would eventually be headed by Paul Castellano.” At 12:40 pm on Thursday, November

14, 1957, Sgt. Croswell, Investigator Vasisko, and two Treasury agents, Arthur Huston and Kenneth Brown, were in an unmarked car outside Barbara’s large, stone house on his 53-acre estate on McFall Road in Apalachin. More than 30 large, expensive cars - some with out-of-state plates - were on Barbara’s property. A large party was in progress out by the barbecue pit. One unidentified mobster upon seeing the police, stopped at a nearby house and asked to use their phone. He called Barbara’s and warned them of the police in the area. The homeowner later found a $100 bill by the phone. After being tipped off, Barbara’s guests fled into the woods, creating the bizarre sight of city slickers in silk suits and expensive shoes slipping on wet autumn leaves, tearing coats on barbed wire and brambles. Members of the Little Meadows Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Squad accept a donation from Repsol Oil & Gas USA employees. Repsol Oil and Gas USA, LLC, a fully integrated oil and gas company operating in the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania, is giving back to the community with a $1,500 donation to the Little Meadows Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Squad. “It is good to have good neighbors,” said the rescue squad’s chief, Leo Purtell. Community Bank Branches Raise Nearly $10,000 to Support Hurricane Harvey Relief Community Bank branches across Western and Central New York and the Finger Lakes region recently joined together to raise funds for the Red Cross to support victims of Hurricane Harvey. During September, the 63 participating branches held “Jeans Fridays” initiatives, asking employees to donate to the cause for the option to wear jeans. Additionally, branches held fundraisers, such as bake sales, to raise money. Branches in Tioga County donated $82, contributing to the grand total of $9,995 raised by the 63 branches. “It’s truly amazing to see the impact that can be made when small efforts

Community Care Network Receives Donation To Continue Providing Services A shortfall in state funding left the Community Care Network of Nichols (CCNN) $15,000 shy of the funding it needed to continue operations. Jeff Gural, owner of Tioga Downs, graciously stepped in to make up the difference, covering the entire $15,000 deficit. “No words will ever be adequate to thank Mr. Gural for his generosity,” Dorothy Richter, executive director of CCNN, said. “With the loss of our local public transit system in 2014, there are even more residents relying heavily on CCNN. We are so grateful for Mr. Gural’s donation, which will allow us to continue making a tremendous and posi-
tive impact on the lives of many Tioga County residents.” CCNN would also like to extend its sincere thanks to Senator Fred Akshar, who was successful in his diligent efforts to have $38,000 in state funding released to the network. The Mission of CCNN is currently aimed at enhancing the quality of life for the residents in the town and village of Nichols, the town of Barton, the Town of Tioga and Southside Owego, with hopes of serving the entire Tioga County community. Specifically, the organization is working to establish the required community infrastructure to

Lions 5K Run Results The Apalachin Lions Club held its 6th Annual 5K Run on October 14. The Top Male winner was Jeremy Corcoran of Apalachin with a time of 20:58. The Top Female winner was Yvonne McKeon of Owego with a time of 21:58. Awards were also given to the two
Top Walkers, James Lyons of Owego and Maureen Hawley of Owego. Money raised from the event will benefit the Apalachin Lions Foundation and activities such as the Back to School Program, the Christmas Basket Program, and various Youth Programs in Apalachin.

Lillian J. Hines, a 2011 graduate of Owego Free Academy, passed the New York State Bar exam. Lillian graduated Magna Cum Laude from Mansfield University in 2014 and Syracuse University College of Law in May 2017. During her time at law school, Lillian participated in the Moot Court Honor Society and competed in oral advocacy competitions. She took the bar exam in July and received her result on October 23. Lillian is employed at Guttman and Reiter Law Office in Ithaca.

In honor of Eat Smart Day (November 1), the American Heart Association worked with Broome-Tioga BOCES to teach a special lesson to more than 55 First Grade students at Clayton Avenue Elementary School in Vestal. The lesson focused on how sugar can impact your health and encouraged students to “rethink their drink” to cut back on added sugars.

(Photo by Ruth B Tonachel) The Home Textile Tool Museum (HTTM) in Orwell, PA, recently completed a phenomenal summer season of 18 programs and workshops. The unique hands-on museum specializes in the tools and skills used to produce textiles in our region in the early 1800s prior to industrialization. Founder Bill Ralph believed strongly in not just displaying tools but teaching people how to use them and his philosophy continues to guide activities at the HTTM. This year, the museum welcomed more than 400 visitors who enjoyed the variety of workshops, speakers, and activities. Popular activities and programs this summer included basket making, weaving, dying yarn, blacksmithing, rug making and sheep shearing. Johannes Zinzendorf’s Flax Day drew an enthusiastic audience and Pat Hilts’ 3-day Timber Frame Loom workshop was also well attended. In addition to the varied programs and workshops that took place this summer at the Home Textile Tool Museum (HTTM), there was excitement about ongoing renovation of the Orwell Grange Hall building located across the road from the current museum. The building had been essentially empty for 10 years when the HTTM purchased it in 2015. Structural repairs, carpentry work, exterior and interior painting, and ADA modifications are being completed be-
fore it can be opened to the public. Over the summer, contractors painted the metal roof and volunteers replaced the side doors and repaired damaged wood siding. Once completed, HTTM plans to use the building for workshops, special programs, exhibits and storage. The HTTM is proud to be able to repurpose this historic Grange Hall and looks forward to years of future use in support of museum programs and collections. Among the items at the HTTM are a number of spinning wheels made by the Farnham family of Owego, New York. Museum curator, Pat Hilts, is pleased to note that over the summer a Farnham great wheel was added to this collection. HTTM is a member of the United Way of Bradford County. The museum also thanks the Bradford County Tourism Agency for continued support. The Home Textile Tool Museum is located at 1819 Orwell Hill Road on State Rte. 1036 in the village of Orwell , PA, and is open Saturdays in the summer. The museum welcomes everyone and has ramps for all the buildings. Workshops and programming for next year is being planned now and will be listed on the museum website (http:// www.hometextiletoolmuseum.org) early in the new year. Opening day in 2018 is Saturday, May 19.

Senator Fred Akshar joined representatives from the YWCA, Rise, A New Hope Center, and the Crime Victims Assistance Center to announce $55,000 in state funds for domestic violence services. The announcement coincided with October being named National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The funding includes: $10,000 for A New Hope Center in Owego to provide domestic violence services to the community through shelter and support. $10,000 for Rise Domestic Violence Services in Endicott to provide civil/ criminal domestic violence legal services to domestic violence victims as well as including shelter, counseling and education; $10,000 for YWCA Binghamton to provide domestic violence services to the community, including shelter and counseling; and $25,000 for Crime Victims Assistance Center in Binghamton to provide civil/criminal domestic violence legal services to domestic violence victims
along with education and awareness. “I’d like to commend our local organizations on the important work they do for our community and victims of domestic violence,” said Senator Fred Akshar. “This cause has a profound impact on me because before I was a Senator I worked in law enforcement and I saw first-hand the devastating effects of domestic violence on children and families. I'm happy to advocate for these organizations and secure funding to help victims of domestic violence.” Fran Bialy, Executive Director of A New Hope Center said, “A New Hope Center would like to thank Senator Akshar for your continued support to serve people that are harmed by those who commit acts of domestic violence.
