Owner of Tioga Downs Donates $66,500 to Local Veterans Support Group
Owego’s Annual Holiday Showcase will be held on Saturday, November 10, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm in downtown Owego. Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive in downtown Owego by horse-drawn carriage at 11:30 am and will be available for photo opportunities with the kids. Activities include horse and carriage rides, caricature drawings, a variety of music and Christmas displays around town, and shopping and dinning in all downtown shops and restarunts. Nothing says Christmas like The Hand of Man and River Rose Café. Enjoy magnificent displays of holiday splendor, featuring over 10,000 ornaments. Receive a free gift with a $50 purchase or more.

Jeff Gural, owner of Tioga Downs Casino Resort, last month presented a check for $66,500 to the Southern Tier Veteran’s Support Group. The funds were raised at a fundraising concert featuring Wynonna & the Big Noise, which took place in July at Tioga Downs. “There is no monetary amount that could ever repay the veterans of our region for their tremendous ser-
vice and sacrifice,” Jeff Gural, Chairman of American Racing & Entertainment, said. “It is a great honor to host this benefit concert each year, and give these brave men and women the support and respect that they are due.” Tickets to the concert were $15 each. For every ticket sold, Jeff and Paula Gural donated an additional $15 to the cause.
Despite a very busy schedule, Santa Claus has been persuaded by the Apalachin Lions to take phone calls for three evenings in early December. Santa has been happy to do this for many years for the children in our area for many years, and he is looking forward to talking to his many young friends again so he will know what they want for Christmas. Veterans Day 2018 will be held at 11:00 am Sunday, November 11, in the Glenn A. Warner Memorial Hall of Owego Post 1371, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and in all churches throughout Tioga, Bradford and Susquehanna Counties. “Bells of Peace” will ring 21 times at 11:00 am. The public and veterans are invited to Veterans Day to honor all veterans who served and mark the centennial of WWI’s final hours. Inside the VFW at 11:00 am, a bugle call by Dean Moran of the VFW Honor Guard will signal the exact time of the armistice 100 years ago. Flags at the Tioga County Veterans Memorial will be at half staff and a remembrance wreath will be placed at the WWI Memorial. Post 1371 Honor Guard will post the colors assisted by veterans from Tioga Post 401 American Legion, Vietnam Veterans, Marine Corps League and Modern Warfare. Sister Mary, Director of Tioga County Rural Ministry, will give the invocation. Gold Star mothers and families and POW/MIAs will be remembered. Sound system will be provided by Gordon Ichikawa. Twenty-five Tioga County Civil War fallen heroes will be remembered with a poppy as their honored names are read by Veterans Service Officer Mike Middaugh. Honoring All Who Served includes
recognition to the longest living past Waverly American Legion Commander Gerald Keene, also past commander of Owego VFW Post 1371 and a member of its Honor Guard, and a Navy veteran of the Korean War. Three veterans of Modern Warfare will receive New York State Awards. Their President Danielle Ingram will recognize Bill Reynolds from Desert Storm, Brian Spencer from Iraq, and Chaplain Pastor Norm Reeder. The Roll of Honor of Tioga County veterans who died since Memorial Day will be read by John Holton Sr., Director Tioga County Veterans Service Agency. Troop 60 Eagle Scout Ryan Trenchard will debut “Burial Sites of all Tioga County Fallen Heroes,” the project for which he earned scouting’s highest honor. Two significant anniversaries will be remembered - the 10th anniversary of the Rt. 38 Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway of Valor and the 31st anniversary of the Tioga County Veterans Memorial - both dedicated on Veterans Day. Fireman’s Fountain Restoration Should be Completed by Spring 2019
Owego Hose Teams, Inc., the local not-for-profit spearheading the Baker Fireman’s Fountain Restoration in courthouse square, along with its team of community business partners working on the fountain site and the contractor performing restoration work on the fountain, have set a tentative spring 2019 completion date for the project. The fountain was removed in July and transported to Robinson Iron in Alexander City, Alabama, where a complete restoration is underway. Robinson Iron holds the original “Fiske Casting Catalogue.” The J.W. Fiske Company from New York City originally cast the Baker Fireman’s Fountain in 1914. Robinson Iron’s work will be completed early next year. McKay Lodge Art Conservation Laboratory in Oberlin, Ohio, recently completed the fountain condition assessment, treatment, and maintenance plan as well as drafted specifications for the fountain concrete, water, and electric work. These plans were reviewed by the project team last week and schedule for project completion put in place. Excavation work of the fountain site

The remaining fountain structure will be removed with some of the existing sidewalk and the whole area will be regraded by Chandler. In November, Seamus Cerretani of SDC Concrete will pour the base pad of the fountain which will be allowed to cure over the winter. SUEZ Water with E.E. Root and Sons will replace the existing water supply and pump. All four companies are donating their time and services to the effort. Next spring, Cerretani will pour the remaining fountain pool and Robinson Iron will return and reassemble the fountain at its current location. Williams and Edsall Land Surveyors marked the fountain location free of charge prior to its removal. Justin Hulslander of Hulslander Concrete will pour a firefighter’s Maltese cross sidewalk with stamped concrete sur-
new “Memorial Walkway” leading up to the fountain from Main Street. To date, 328 bricks have been sold as part of the walkway. A final completion date with fountain rededication will be set early next year. Fundraising has been ongoing since 2017 and the hose team received an additional $5,000 grant from the Mildred Faulkner Truman Foundation this year. The Truman Foundation previously provided a $20,000 grant to the effort. Bricks for the “Memorial Walkway” continue to be sold on the hose team website www.OwegoHoseTeams.com. Project status information is available on the hose team website and Facebook page @owegohoseteams. 9th Annual Virtual Turkey Drive What if there were no turkey? No cranberries, no sweet potatoes. No green bean casserole. No pumpkin pie. What would Thanksgiving be? The Food Bank’s Ninth Annual Virtual Turkey Drive continues through Thanksgiving Day with a goal to raise $80,000 to purchase turkeys and holiday meals for Southern Tier residents who are experiencing hunger and food insecurity. Tioga Downs Casino Resort has again pledged to match donations, dollar for dollar, up to $20,000. Turkeys and meals will be distributed to partner agencies throughout the Southern Tier, where more than 72,000
residents are living at or below the poverty line. One in seven adults and one in four children may be facing food insecurity and are at risk of hunger. Holiday dinners are more than just food; they bring families together, build tradition and provide opportunities to give thanks. The Virtual Turkey Drive aims to give everyone in the Southern Tier a bountiful Thanksgiving meal and stock the shelves for the holiday season. On Wednesday, October 10, five years after the unexpected death of five-year-old Sarah Jayne Orton from sepsis, local members of her family along with special friends distributed funds raised at the recent “Sarah’s Cause for Paws.” The event, which was held October 8 at Hickories Park, raised $10,111 through sponsorships, donations, gift baskets, and more. A check for $5,000 was given to the local chapter of “Pibbles and More Animal Rescue.” The next stop was The Broome County Humane Society where they dropped off supplies and paid an adoption fee for a dog named Legacy.
At Stray Haven in Waverly, more supplies were dropped off as well as a check for $2,500. While there, they decided to pay the adoption fee for another dog, Obie. In addition to the local donations, $1,000 continues to be given annually to the Baltimore Humane Society where Sarah had asked donations be made. (Sarah Jayne Orton’s dog had been adopted from that facility.) Binghamton Community Orchestra Concert - Nov 10
The Binghamton Community Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Timothy Perry, opens its 35th season with a concert entitled “All About Autumn,” a musical exploration of the ways various composers chose to depict this most beautiful season. The concert will take place on
Saturday, November 10, at 7:00 pm at the Binghamton East Middle School Auditorium. The program will include Autumn, from “The Seasons,” by Sir Edward German; In a Haunted Forest, and In October, from “First Suite,” by Edward MacDowell; the first movement of Mozart’s Concerto for Violin in D major, K. 218; Autumn, from “The Seasons,” by Alexander Glazunov; and Tchaikowski’s September, October and November, from “The Seasons, Op. 37a.” This concert will mark the beginning of the final season for Dr. Perry, who will be retiring after a total of fifteen years with the orchestra. The concert will feature student violinist, Sophia Klin (pictured), a senior at Binghamton High School and winner of this year’s Southern Tier Music Teachers’ Association Concerto Competition. Senator Fred Akshar last month joined local volunteer firefighters and EMS workers from across the 52nd Senate District to announce 12 funding grants to support local volunteer fire departments and emergency services squads totaling $155,000. The grants will go toward a variety of projects depending on the needs of each department. Projects range from rescue equipment upgrades and replacements to new communications technology to help local volunteers better serve and assist the residents of the 52nd District. The public is invited to stop in and explore topics with attendees such as how to locate resources, flint materials, and workshops available. This is an opportunity for those interested in working on their flintknapping
skills to work in a group environment. Each participant brings own flint, tools (if have them) and projects. Bring related projects to display and discuss. The ultimate goal is to promote a community of flintknappers and preserve these ancient skills for generations to come. This event is free and open to the public and will be held inside the Welcome Center at the Bement-Billings Farmstead Museum located on Route 38 in Newark Valley, NY 13811. Love of Horses Comes Alive through Art Alison Goodrich, 17, (pictured) a member of Tioga County 4-H, received a “Best of Fair” Recognition at the New York State Fair in the 4-H Fine Arts Category for her drawing “Imperial.” This distinction is given to the project deemed to be the very best work that is determined by the judges. Alison’s love of horses and riding comes alive through her artwork. She learned how to draw through her own research, practice, and hard work. Over the course of many years, it has been a pleasure for staff, judges, and the public to see Alison’s growth as an artist through her drawings.

William Ransom III Community Service Award The Rotary Club of Waverly has awarded this year’s William H. Ransom III Community Service Award to Laura Spencer Eberly. Rotary was one of the many organizations that Bill was active in and his Waverly Rotary colleagues honor his commitment to the community with an annual award that recognizes similar service while benefiting local nonprofits. Bill was a valley business man and extremely active in many different groups in the community. He served on multiple boards and committees and always provided leadership and vision to these groups. He was active in the Sayre Presbyterian Church, Waverly Rotary Club, Tioga State Bank, Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers (CFTT), Sayre Historical Society, and Guthrie Healthcare System to name just a few. He was committed to making his community a stronger and better place to live, work, and enjoy life. Bill passed away on July 10, 2014.
The award is given to individuals who share Bill’s vision and commitment, supporting the community through service over ten years or more, demonstrating the following characteristics: 1) Providing leadership and vision, 2) Has been a mentor and role model, 3) Significant time devoted to improve the community, and 4) Is proactive and has produced positive change Laura Spencer Eberly was described by Christina Di Stefano as passionate, creative, intelligent, inquisitive, contemplative and kind. She has shown leadership by serving as the Secretary of the Tioga Arts Council from 2014 to the present. She was President of the Historic Owego Marketplace for three years. She served as Commissioner of the Owego Historic Preservation Commission from 2014 through 2017 after having taken their minutes from 2005 through 2014. Laura is the second recipient of this award and will grant $500 to a nonprofit organization that she believes in

Zoe Slater, a student at the Owego Middle School, was the winner of the Apalachin Lions 2018 Peace Poster Contest. The theme of this year’s contest was “Kindness Matters.” More than 37 students participated in the contest. Zoe and her family were the guests of the Apalachin Lions at the club’s meeting on October 24. Lion Terry White presented Zoe with a $50 savings bond. Apalachin Lions President David

Dept. of Aging - Public Hearing - Nov. 7 Tioga Opportunities’ Department of Aging will hold its annual Public Hearing on Wednesday, November 7, from 12:30 to 1:30 pm, at the Countryside Community Center at 9 Sheldon Guile Boulevard in Owego. Tioga County residents are encouraged to attend to provide input and feedback regarding aging services, and to make recommendations on how Tioga Opportunities can improve its services to
older adults in the community. The Triple Cities Ski Club (TCSC) will hold its 37th Annual Ski Sale on Sunday, November 18, 10:00 am to 3:30 pm, at Knights of Columbus, 136 Park Avenue in Binghamton. The sale is open to the public and gives sports enthusiasts an opportunity to buy and sell downhill and cross-country skis, boots, poles, bindings, clothing, plus snowboarding, skating, hockey, camping, biking, and other equipment. In addition to used equipment, ski shops and vendors from ski resorts will be selling equipment and clothing at discounted prices. For those interested in selling items, drop off times are Saturday, November 17, 4:00 to 7:00 pm and 8:00 to 9:30 am on Sunday, November 18. Sale items must be brought to Knights of Columbus at the designated times. The registration fee is 50 cents per item and 20% commission for items sold. Pickup times (to retrieve unsold items) after the sale are Sunday, November 18, 4:30 to 6:00 pm and Monday, November 19 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Sellers can check online during the sale to see if items have sold. TCSC is a 350-member yearround club with numerous outdoor
and social activities planned each month. Non-skiers join the club to participate in non-skiing events. Singles and those new to the area join the club to meet new people. An information table will be available for people to join TCSC at $15 a year, which affords members discounted prices at area ski resorts and opportunities to go on ski trips at group rates. This year the line-up of ski trips will be to Windham Mountain, NY; Elk Mountain, PA; a weeklong Killington Ski Camp, VT; a midweek Killington trip and a weekend Bolton Valley trip in Vermont; a midweek trip to Village of Loon Mountain, New Hampshire with skiing at Loon, Bretton Woods and Cannon; and a weeklong western trip to Breckenridge and Keystone, CO. Club meetings are held at Knights of Columbus, 136 Park Ave., Binghamton on the first Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm September through May, except the December meeting which will be on December 13. November is National Adoption Month and a time to raise awareness about adopting a child from the foster care system. Currently, in the United States there are over 400,000 children in foster care with more than 100,000 of these children waiting for permanent homes. The children in care who need permanent homes range in ages from infancy all the way up to the age of 21 as children never outgrow the need for a family. Unfortunately, each year approximately 20,000 children age out of the foster care system without having found their forever family. Did you know that teens who are adopted are more likely to graduate from high school, enroll in higher education and obtain a greater degree of emotional stability than their peers who remain in foster care? In honor of National Adoption Month, the Tioga County Department of Social Services would like to honor one of their own foster and adoptive families who have opened up their hearts and their home with the intent of helping siblings stay together. Krystle and Brian Burdick have been foster parents since 2016. After relocating to Tioga County for employment purposes, Krystle and Brian began to explore foster care and adoption as a way to help children and families and possibly add to their family through adoption. From the beginning, Krystle and Brian (pictured) were interested in the thought of bringing sibling groups into their home as they could not imagine having to separate siblings at a time when they are also dealing with the separation from their parents. The Burdicks were asked to reflect on their experiences from fostering to adoption and if they any advice for families considering becoming a foster parent. Krystle said thinking back it was a lot harder than she thought it was going to be and if it weren’t for Brian,
there were days she didn’t know how she would do it. She tells families that are considering fostering to adopt that you and your partner need to both be on the same page and have your home in order because “life is going to change” she said with a laugh. Krystle, who had never had children of her own before she fostered her four boys, says “you enter fostering with ideas of how you want to parent the kids that enter your home and I learned after a while that those ways are not always going to work”. “Overall,” she states “the boys have taught me to be more flexible and that sometimes it’s us that needs to adapt, not them.” Have you been considering foster care and adoption? Do you have room in your heart and in your home? If so, join the team that cares about kids, the Tioga County Foster Parenting Program - they know that temporary care makes a permanent difference. Tioga County needs caring foster and adoptive families who are able to provide a nurturing home for children, especially for teenagers, siblings and children with special needs. The Tioga County Foster Parenting program will be hold two informational and orientation sessions this month where you can learn more about the foster parenting program in Tioga County. The first session is on Saturday, November 10, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm, at the Coburn Free Library, 275 Main Street in Owego. The second session is on Wednesday, November 14, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm at the Tioga County Department of Health & Human Services Building, 1062 St. Rt. 38, in Owego. Registration is not required.
