Everyone enjoyed the music, shopping, and the many activities. A fireworks display closed out the evening. Above: Mrs. Claus helps Santa turn the lights on. While the average pigeon lives a mere four years, Waverly’s residentpigeon “Buddy” is approaching her 13th birthday. Often found perched on the shoulder of her caretaker Ralph Geiger, the two work closely in their one-of-akind woodshop, where Ralph has been building unique birdhouses for close to 20 years, creating nearly 1,700 to date. His wife Diane finalizes the houses with stunning splashes of color. Showcased regularly at festivals and bazaars, it is Ralph’s hope that no bird will ever be without a place to call home. Additionally, Ralph has partnered

with the Carantouan Greenway to get birdhouses out to our community, bringing his vision to light. Art projects hosted by local libraries, schools, parks, and Greenway Youth Days, have resulted in a multitude of Ralph’s birdhouses uniquely painted by local youth, which can be found at Two Rivers State Park, the Riverwalk area in downtown Owego, Owego-Apalachin School District, Waverly Little League, Muldoon Gardens, and residential homes throughout the county. In honor of Giving Tuesday, the Greenway thanked Ralph Geiger for his selfless spirit and dedication to local wildlife. In the US, Giving Tuesday is celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Giving Tuesday is the start of the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-ofyear giving. This season, Carantouan Greenway gave away three of Ralph Geiger’s birdhouses on #GivingTuesday, November 28.

Phone Santa 625-HOHO It’s a very busy time of the year for jolly ol’ Saint Nick, but the Apalachin Lions have once again persuaded Santa Claus to take phone calls from the kids for three nights in early December. Santa has been happy to do this for the children in the area for many years. He is looking forward to talking to his many young friends so he will know what they want for Christmas. To talk to Santa, call 625HOHO (625-4646) from

6:00 to 8:00 pm on December 4, 5, or 6. Merry Christmas!

Castellucci Blood Drive on December 21 Town of Owego Supervisor Donald Castellucci, Jr. will sponsor his 21st Annual Memorial Blood Drive in memory of his parents, Donald and Grace Castellucci, Sr., on Thursday, December 21, from 1:30 to 6:30 pm at the Owego Elks Club in Owego. Appointments can be made by calling 1-800-REDCROSS or visiting www. redcrossblood.org. Each year since his father’s death on December 25, 1997, Don has held a blood drive in his memory. In 2010 Don lost his mother to cancer as well and added her memory to the drive. “During their illness, blood and platelets were needed to extend their life,” Don said. “Our family was blessed by the generosity of a giving public. Each year in return, we try to give something back to help others. We have recruited approximately

630 donors helping 1890 patients to date. We are grateful to all who have joined us in helping others.” As in the past, a rigatoni and meatball dinner will be served to all donors. Also, the family asks that food items be brought to be donated to Tioga County Rural Ministry. Cash donations in the Castelluccis’ memory are also accepted and sent to the ministry as well. During the Christmas holiday we are blessed with family and friends. On December 21, you can give the most important give of the season, the gift of life. Take an hour and remember the family and friends that have gone before us by helping others that are still with us. Don thanks everyone for your support at previous blood drives, and he hopes to see you on December 21, and he wished everyone a blessed

CLOSED NEW YEARS DAY OUR REGULAR HOURS:

Tuesday-Sunday 7am to 3 pm (Closed Monday) For his Eagle Project, Phillip Card, along with the leaders and scouts of Windsor’s Troop 68, worked diligently to construct an Adirondack style shelter with benches at the Pettus Hill Preserve. The Waterman Conservation Education Center received a bequest from Charles Pettus, a long time Windsor resident and retired IBM employee. The 100+ acre property is now known as the Pettus Hill Preserve and is open to the public for hiking and cross country skiing. Located toward the left at the top of Abbey Hill Road in West Windsor, this property lends itself to peaceful solitude as you are surrounded with moderately wooded, untouched beauty. The trail leads back to a picturesque overlook where Mr. Pettus is laid to rest.

Phillip would like to thank Lowes, Jerry and Peggy Redmon, Tom Murphy, Bill and Deb DePersis, The Windsor Partners, Inc., The Windsor Fire Department, The Town of Windsor, Joe and Gina McNally, John Langill, John and Antoinette Soldovieri, Rick Blythe, The Windsor Civic Club, Steve Herz, Lattner Enterprises of NY LLC, and many others who donated monies and/or materials to this project. Without their generosity, this project would not have been possible. Phillip especially appreciated the personal notes some of you included which spoke of your relationship to Mr. Pettus or your enjoyment of scouting.

Senator Fred Akshar visited classrooms in three local schools last month to continue a new district-wide student recognition program. Each month, Senator Akshar recognizes three or four local students selected by their school districts in the 52nd Senate District who have shown great leadership, compassion, school spirit or improvement amongst their peers. For each student recognized as an “Akshar All-Star” Senator Akshar presents them with a T-shirt, framed certificate and a challenge coin. At Tioga Central High School, Akshar recognized 17-year-old senior Madalyn Dydynski for her ability to balance a strong academic schedule while also finding time to lend a helping hand in her school and in her community through organizations like the Tioga National Honor Society, Tioga Agriculture Club, the TC Softball Team & Field Hockey Team, YES Leads, Varsity Club, Spanish Club and Community Service Club. She also volunteers as a Student Aide at Tioga SHS and was selected for the American Legion Auxiliary Empire Girls State Leadership Program. At Vestal Middle School, Akshar recognized 13-year-old Drew Hudock and 14-year-old Connor Hillis for their

act of generosity and selflessness while collecting cans to raise funds for their soccer team. The two visited the house of a former teacher’s aide, Betty Gensler. She explained to the boys that she does not give out cans because she collects them herself to raise funds to fight ALS, the disease that took her son's life. Without telling anyone, Drew and Connor then went home and came back with their own money along with all of their cans to donate to Betty’s cause. At Oxford Academy High School, Akshar recognized 16-year-old Gillian Mulder for her work with the Students Against Drunk Driving Student Leadership group, the local soup kitchen in Oxford and for initiating a sox drive to donate socks, gloves and clothing to families in need. Senator Fred Akshar said, “This is a great opportunity for us to work with school district throughout the 52nd Senate District to recognize outstanding young people who are doing wonderful things in our community. Whether they’re in 2nd grade or a senior in high school, we want to bring attention to those students who are making a difference in their own lives and in the lives of those around them. They inspire us all by showing us the good that exists in our communities.”

Veterans News Wreaths Across America You can support the goal of Wreaths Across America by placing Christmas wreaths on all veterans graves within the Community Press’ circulation area of Apalachin, Little Meadows, Friendsville, Warren Center, Owego, Lounsberry, Nichols, Tioga Center, Newark Valley and Campville. “Don’t Say I Should Have. Say I Did” is the theme for local individuals to lay a wreath on every veterans headstone on or before National Wreaths Across America Day, Saturday, December 16. The mission of Wreaths Across America is to remember the fallen, honor those who served and teach our children that our freedom isn’t free. Why wreaths during the holidays? Gold Star Mothers and Family or the families of veterans who have passed just want to know all those sacrifices and lost holidays were not in vain. Tioga County has 172 fallen heroes from all wars and many more from the Civil War. There are an estimated 5,000 deceased veterans in Tioga County. Three videos on www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/evednts/ blog explain Wreaths Across America. Hear why it matters from the founder, an American Gold Star Mother who lost her son, and from the personal stories of those who serve and sacrifice.

Local contact is Post 1371 VFW Memorial Chairman Jim Raftis jraftis2@stny.rr.com or 687-4229. All of you in the community are our partners. To complete the mission help is needed from many individuals, families, veterans, churches, and all organizations. Remember Pearl Harbor Thursday, December 7 Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is Thursday, December 7, the 76th Anniversary, at 12:55 p.m. at the Glenn A. Warner Post 1371 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Veterans and public invited to the ceremony at the Delmar Sibley Memorial Dining Room. Five from Tioga County were there that Sunday morning in 1941. Owego’s first casualty of WWII is 23-year-old Seaman Delmar D. Sibley still entombed the sunken USS Arizona. Four others survived. One is living – 96-year-old Army Air Force Staff Sergeant Bill Kennedy of Owego – and three are deceased including Army Combat Infantryman Richard Hopkins of Berkshire, Army Cook Don Stocks and Marine Buster Dunham, both of Owego. The American flags at the Tioga County Veterans Memorial are flown at half staff to honor those who died in the attack on Pearl Harbor.
