Cob Weekend At Royal Welsh Showground Sees World Records Tumble October 22nd 2012 The world record price for cobs was beaten three times at last weekend’s Annual Welsh Cob Sale at Builth Wells. The first record price was £16,000 paid for the cob colt foal, Thorneyside Royal Command, by Glamorgan buyer Mr Swiston. Minutes later the world record was broken yet again when Thorneyside Welsh Magic, a winner at the Royal Welsh Show and Glanusk champion, was sold for £20,000 to Mr Emanuel of Llanelli. And soon after the world record was broken again when Thorneyside Golden Boy, a two-year-old colt, was sold for £22,000 to Miss A. Wenham of Sussex. All three cobs were part of a reduction sale from the Thorneyside stud owned by Peter Gray and family of Windsor. The 43 Thorneyside cobs sold to a total of £151,000 to average £3,511. During the three-day weekend sale - from 19th to 21st October Brightwells, the official auctioneers to the Welsh Pony & Cob Society, sold 510 cobs to a total of £459,160 to achieve an overall average of £900.31. Friday also saw the part-bred foal Llanidan Pearly from the Llanidan Stud in Anglesey, realise £2,300 to Mrs Lowe of Bracknell. On Saturday, prior to the Thorneyside reduction sale, a top price of £5,000 was paid for the chestnut stallion Felinmor Distinction who was bought by Mr Cumberland of Doncaster. The final day of this world-renowned cob sale saw another 141 entries through the ring which sold to a top price of £6,500 and average £971.50. The £6,500 bid came for the Palomino filly foal Taincwm X Factor from Mr S R Davies. The buyer was Mrs Groom of Maidenhead. The first, the cream Palomino filly foal Synod Rose Dixie Chick made £4,000 while the next lot, the chestnut filly foal Synod Rosie’s Scarlet Ribbon, made £5,000. Both were bought by Monsieur Etienne Stevens of France and the Parvadean mare went to Messrs Davies & Son of Beaumaris, Anglesey The three-day sale saw a crowd of over 5000 people – one of the largest crowds ever to attend the cob weekend - entertained by the London Pearly Kings and Queens who ensured there was a “party mood” for the start of Saturday evening’s Thorneyside stud reduction.
