Brightwells Hay on Wye Sale 5th and 6th October 2013 The Brightwells Autumn Sale was originally set up in the 1960’s for section A hill foals but this Sale has now developed into a Sale for all five sections. The favourable weather enabled most of the animals to be sold to best advantage in the grass ring with the others being sold in the market ring. The average price for the last four years has been £110 to £136, this year’s average being £111 but the Sale total was down from £50,527 in 2010 to £31,525 due to fewer animals (284) being sold. 32 animals were sold for export, 18 to Germany, 8 to Holland, 3 to France, 2 to Ireland and 1 to Denmark. Mr Jansen from Uelsen, Germany bought 16 including the filly foals Dirion Heledd (£480), Llanfilo Elouise (£380) and Penymorfa Violet (£360). Top of the Sale at £1,600 was the seven-year-old palomino section A stallion Penboeth Full Stop who had served his time with Mr Dewi Thomas at his Cefnfedw Stud, Llandeilo. There were nice foals sired by him on the Sale and he now goes to Mr Leslie Owen’s Trehwfa Stud, Newborough, Anglesey. Photo Dr Wynne Davies

The nineteen-year-old palomino section A mare Yaverland Cherry Blossom who went to Holland for £7,000 from the 2004 Brightwells Fayre Oaks Sale returned to spend her last days in Wales and was bought for £850 by Mrs Sue Edwards of Whitland who was the under-bidder in 2004. The next-highest lots were section A filly foals: Mr John Harries, Hope Stud, Llandeilo sold the grey Hope Ladybird to Messrs Williams Brothers of Llanmorlais for £800 and Mr Gareth Price of Brecon sold Littlewern Lottie to leading producer Mr Adam Fletcher of Redmarley, Gloucester for £700. Mr Price also sold Littlewern Rose for £520 to music teacher Mr Conway Morgan of Glanrhyd.

Top of section D were two three-year-old fillies, Mr James’ black Glynnedd Lucy (£520 to Harold and Yvette Zoet of Wezep, Holland) and Miss Tanya Baldwin’s palomino Janton Zanya (£510 to Mr Harbour of Basildon who bought twelve). Top section C was Mrs Evans’ six-year-old bay mare Tynwydd Mystic Force (£500 to Mrs Twitchen of Sudbury). Other section As to sell at £500 were Miss Bethan Hooper and Mr Rhydian Donati’s six-year-old section A mare Penllyn Mystique (to Cadlanvalley Valley Stud where she is proving a great success under saddle), Mr Gareth Price’s six-year-old stallion Forlan Billy Elliott (to Ms Elizabeth Yates of Wick, Bristol who also bought the superpremium stallion Messrs Watkins’ Penwayn Ivan for £380), the twelve-year-old Talsarn Cleopatra in foal to Penwayn Ivan (to Mr Roland Williams, Capel Seion) and the dun filly foal Cefnfedw Sara’s Golden Girl sired by top-of-the-Sale Penboeth Full Stop (to Mrs Sue Mason of Rhydyfelin, Pontypridd who has had a very successful showing season including winning WPCS medals).
