Excellent clearance of cattle on offer at Hereford Cattle Society’s Spring Sale A move away from the weekend for the Hereford Cattle Society’s Spring Sale appears to have paid dividends when the cattle offered at Tuesday’s Sale in Hereford Livestock Market all found a home bar one. The Sale, commencing with an offering of Show Heifers, saw all 15 sell for £37,747.50 resulting in an Average of £2,516.50. A top price of 4,500 gns. was paid for the 17 months old Romany 1 Plum D1 K58 sold by J.R.B. Wilson & Sons of Kelso, Borders to newcomers to the Breed, Martel Herefords, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire who later in the Sale purchased another Wilson bred heifer, 18 month old Romany 1 Lucy AL1 K50 for 2,400 gns. The second highest price heifer at 24 months old and incalf was the Reserve Champion, Dendor 1 Myrtle 11th, sold by Messrs. D.E., E.D. & A.L. Jones of Caersws, Powys selling for 4,200 gns. to Mr. B. Head, Barnt Green Herefords, Barnt Green, Birmingham. Romany 1 Plum D1 K58 Lot 8 sold for top female price of 4,500gns

The Champion heifer, 15 month old Panmure 1 Blessing K11 from Mrs. J.M. Cant & Partners, Arbroath, Angus, sold for 2,450 gns. to Mr. A.J. Thomas, Premier Herefords, Narberth, Pembrokeshire. A second heifer from Messrs. Cant, 17 month old Panmure 1 Plum K6 sold for 2,400 gns., also going down to South West Wales, purchased by Mr. E. Rees, Trefochlyd Herefords, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshrie.

Dendor 1 Myrtle 11th Lot 3 sold for 4,200gns

The second prize heifer to the Champion, 12 month old Blakesley 1 Jade, sold by P. & A.M. Riley, Towcester, Northamptonshire to Mr. M. Ludgate, Rempstone Herefords, Thame, Oxfordshire for 2,900 gns. A small consignment of heifers sold by W.J. Hutchings & Sons of Chichester, W. Sussex saw the 23 month old heifer, Fisher 1 Orange J360 top the bunch selling for 3,000 gns. to another newcomer to the Breed, M.G. Adele Jones, Crickhowell, Powys. With an offering of 27 Bulls, 26 sold for £88,147.50 to Average £3,390.00.

Female Champion Panmure 1 Blessing K11 Lot 10

The Champion, 21 month old Lowesmoor 1 Jockey, exhibited by Mr. M.J. Clark, Tetbury, Gloucester topped the Sale at 6,000 gns. “Jockey”, by the home-bred Lowesmoor 1 Gauloise, weighing 910 kgs., was purchased by Mr. M.J. Burton, Westgate Herefords, Leigh, Surrey. Mr. John Gregson, Agricultural PR Manager for Waitrose, presented an award to mark the opening of their new Store in the City of Hereford, and it was appropriate that the recipient was Mr. Clark who regularly supplies Hereford Cattle to Dovecote Park, Processors for Waitrose Hereford Beef. Second highest price of the day was paid for the first prize-winning bull, 22 month old Weybrook 1 Midas, exhibited by Mr. H.A. Hatt, Basingstoke, Hampshire. “Midas”, weighing 895 kgs., was by Dendor 1 Flinder and sold for 5,800 gns. to Mr. & Mrs. M.G.S. Gibson to join their Stitchcombe Herd in Marlborough, Wiltshire.

Male Champion Lowesmoor 1 Jockey Lot 35 sold for 6,000gns

Mrs. J.M. Cant & Partners of Arbroath, Angus took the Reserve Male Championship with their 16 month old Panmure 1 Kingsley selling for 3,900 gns. “Kingsley” by Hawkesbury 1 Volcano, weighing 740 kgs., was purchased by Mr. D.W. Walker, Knightwick Herefords, Worcester.

The next lot through the Sale for Messrs. Cant was 16 month old Panmure 1 Knightsman, a Superior Carcase Sire and a son of “Volcano” weighing 760 kgs. and selling for 4,500 gns. This bull possibly destined for TV stardom having been purchased by Fir Farm Ltd., Firbosa Herefords, Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire – a herd often featured on the TV programme, “Countryfile”.

Panmure 1 Knightsman Lot 49 sold for 4,500gns

The first bull through the ring, 26 month old Sigston 1 Jupiter, sold for 4,100 gns. “Jupiter”, weighing 1,010 kgs. and by Masefield 1 Colarado was purchased by local commercial producers, N.J. & B.A. Turner & Son, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. Other leading prices included 24 month old Fisher 1 Jenson sold by W.J. Hutchings & Sons, Chichester, W. Sussex – “Jenson” by Allendale Waterloo, weighing 870 kgs. sold for 4,000 gns. to Stratfield Saye Farms, Stratfield Saye Herefords, Reading, Berkshire. 23 month old Lanscombe 1 Oh No from Mr. R.A. Mitchell, Dorchester, Dorset also sold for 4,000 gns. “Oh No” weighing 895 kgs. was by Brangwyn 1 Emperor and was purchased by J. & E. Thornhill, Poynton Herefords, Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

Weybrook 1 Midas Lot 30 sold for 5,800gns

Messrs. W. & R. Kemp & Sons, Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham sold their 24 month old Auckvale Jonty for 3,700 gns. “Jonty” a Superior Carcase Sire, sired by Auckvale Advance 790E, weighed 900 kgs. and was purchased by Portway Farm Partnership, Pendock, Gloucestershire.

The two youngest bulls in the Sale, 13 month old Dendor 1 Kununurra, and 12 month old Dendor 1 Krypton, both sired by SMH Euro 30E, sold for 3,100 gns. and 3,700 gns. respectively. “Kununurra” weighing 590 kgs. was purchased by Mr. G.H. Cattell, Woodhouse Herefords, Solihull, West Midlands and “Krypton”, weighing 570 kgs., was purchased by P. & A.M. Riley, Blakesley Herefords, Towcester, Northamptonshire. Messrs. L.R. & A.M. Ayre, South Molton, Devon saw their 21 month old Frenchstone P. 1 Concord sell for 3,000 gns. “Concord”, weighing 870 kgs., and sired by Dorepoll 1 93N Nationwide was purchased by J. Jones & Co., Bow Street, Ceredigion. J.R.B. Wilson & Sons, Kelso, Borders sold their 17 month old Romany 1 Kinetic RE K65 for 3,000 gns. “Kinetic”, weighing 710 kgs., and sired by Spurstow 1 Recruit 1st was purchased by Mr. R. Archer, Ashbourne, Derbyshire. The Sale culminated with a strong trade for the non-Show Females resulting in all 28 offered selling for £57,225.00 to Average £2,043.75. A consignment of 10 heifers from the Romany Herd belonging to J.R.B. Wilson & Sons, Kelso sold to average £2,895.00. Topping the offering were two 20 month old heifers selling for 3,600 gns. each – Romany 1 Mink A84 K9 sired by Baybridge 1 Atlas selling to P. & E. Williams, Alderoak Herefords, Shrewsbury and another “Atlas” daughter, Romany 1 Plum A84 K6 selling to Mr. N.J. Griffiths, Grifford Herefords, Penkridge, Staffordshire. Another regular consignee to the Sale, E.R. & C.A. Kirby, Buxton, Derbyshire, saw their offering of 5 incalf heifers sell to average £1,932.00 to a top of 2,200 gns. for Tydesmoor 1 Honor, sired by Romany 1 Exceptional A84 E36, and purchased by R. & S.E. Poole, Hampshill Herefords, Leek, Staffordshire. Messrs. Poole also purchased two further Tydesmoor heifers, Hess and Halcyon for 2,000 gns. and 1,800 gns. respectively. The last lot of the day, the rising 3 year old first calver, Highfields P.1 Mist 7th, along with her 5 week old heifer calf offered by Mr. I.A. Braithwaite, Bridgnorth, Shropshire sold for 2,600 gns. to relative newcomers to the Breed, G.J. & E.M. Thomas, Charmily Herefords, Cardigan, Dyfed. Overall, the 69 cattle sold for a total of £183,120.00 to Average £2,654.00. Breed Secretary, David Prothero, commenting on the Sale expressed his relief that moving the Sale from its weekend slot to a weekday did not appear to have had any adverse effect on the results of the Sale. In fact it was the first Sale that he could remember with such an excellent clearance of the cattle offered.
