Brightwells Autumn Cob Sale 18th, 19th, 20th October 2013 To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Autumn Cob Sales, Brightwells put on a Gala Evening Sale of 25 lots on the Saturday night preceded with entertainment by Tom Jones-John and his dancers. The evening event was so popular that it was standing room only in the Glamorgan Building long before it started and the crowd outside was reminiscent of the Royal Welsh showground on a show day. The vendors also embraced the occasion where black tie was the order of the night. This contrasted greatly to the first Sale was held in an open field at Llanarth Stud in 1964 when 36 were sold for a Sale total of £3,744 averaging £104. This year 528 were sold for £365,720 averaging £693 with 64 animals sold for export. 7 animals sold for over £5,000; 11 over £4,000; 22 over £3,000; 42 over £2,000 and 101 over £1,000. The average of £693 has remained fairly constant for the last four years but shows a steady decline from the £1,016 to £1,194 of 2005 – 2008. Last year’s average of £668 was boosted to £908 by the inclusion of 43 from Thorneyside Stud which sold for £151,000 averaging at £3,511. Top of the Sale at £11,500 was Fronarth Stud’s chestnut section D filly foal Fronarth Model Princess, daughter of this year’s Royal Welsh female champion Fronarth Super Model and g-daughter of Fronarth Welsh Model who won at the Royal Welsh show six times and was female champion three times and also overall. Model Princess was bought by Mrs Dawn Groom of Maidenhead who last year bought the palomino section C filly foal Taincwm X Factor for £6,500 and went on to win at the Royal Welsh with her. Mrs Groom also bought the black section C filly foal Parvadean Rianna for £4,500, Photo by Mili Peel no doubt with an eye for repeating her Royal Welsh success! Rianna is sired by Parvadean The Governor, the 1994 Royal Welsh youngstock champion which was exported to the USA then re-imported by Kris Gee of the Oldeworld Stud and the Parvadean Stud were lucky to lease him for 2012. Second-highest at £6,800 was the three-year-old section D dappled palomino filly Abercippyn New Model a grand-daughter of the multi-champion Abercippyn Rose Cariad. Very successfully shown by her breeder as a foal and yearling, her only outing this year was at the NPS Show where she was overall Mountain and Moorland champion, she is now broken to saddle and looked to have the most superb temperament. Her new home is with Mrs Lomas of the Four Seasons Stud, Sandford, Bristol. Two local breeders Eirian Emanuel of Ponthenri, Llanelli and Mark Swistun of Llanmorlais, Gower fancied Stuart Morgan’s seven-year-old chestnut section D mare Blaencila Locket of Thorneyside breeding, Mr Emanuel eventually securing her for £6,600. Both breeders are Thorneyside fans, Mr Emanuel bought the four-year-old Thorneyside Welsh Magic here last year here for £20,000 and Mr Swistun bought the colt foal Thorneyside Royal Command for £16,000. Blaencila Locket is sired by Menai Sparkling Magic whose two-year-old son, the chestnut colt Aleanto Bonaparte was brought over by Heinz Spiekermann of Bochum, Germany and he went at £6,200 to Mr and Mrs Walker of Huddersfield who cleverly bought the section C Glebedale Ding Dong at this Sale a few years ago and went on to be Cuddy In-hand champion at HOYS last year. A mother and daughter pair from Synod which sold for £6,000 each were equal top of section C. The mare was the seven-year-old Synod Rose Gabriella, daughter of champion Synod Gabriel who is now twenty-four and is the last son of the original sire Synod William. Rose Gabriella fell to a telephone bid from Gail Ponesse of Ontario, Canada who has had great success with her previous Synod purchase. The daughter at the same price was the impressive bay filly foal Synod Rose Champagne bought by Jack Bowerman of Ebbw Vale and the under-bidder

Ilona Pykalainen of Finland then bought the black filly foal Synod Ruby Rose for £1,200 and the palomino filly foal Brohedydd Gold Lace for £4,000. Synod Stud still holds the record for a section C filly foal sold at this Sale; this was Synod Relegance sold in 2001 for £11,000. This year was a first-time record for Synod two-generation females and they also hold the record for two-generation males when Synod Robert Black and his son, the colt foal Synod Rumpus, sold for £11,000 and £4,200 in 1999. Two section D females come next, the six-year-old Danaway Roma went to Markus Bauer of Austria for £5,500; Roma won many youngstock championships and was 2nd at the Royal Welsh Show in 2009. The threeyear-old chestnut Haighmoor Prydferth travelled only a few miles to her new home, she was sold for £4,600 to the Chambers family of Llanafanfawr, Builth Wells; with a Derwen sire and Derwen dam, Derwen Delecante was bought by Haighmoor in foal to Derwen Quartz in 2009. Haighmoor also sold the four-year-old bay mare Haighmoor Miss Millie, daughter of their Royal Welsh champion Haighmoor Glain to Eleri Wynn Davies of Penrallt Ddu, Fishguard for £4000. Jonathan Batt’s thirteen-year-old strawberry roan mare Lodor Dara attracted the attention of top producers Clare Granger and George Mitchell of Chingford who bought her for £3,500; Dara is a former champion at Anglesey County and Northleach Welsh Breeds Shows. Mrs Jackie Kirk received the same price for her unusual six-year-old section C perlino stallion Burghwallis Welsh Wizard, sold to Gwillym Howatson of Llansannan who wins championships regularly with his sections A, C and D. Gwillym also bought for £2,200 the five-year-old section D black Royal Welsh winner Minyffordd Winsome Maid. It was sad to see Milton Jones of the Minyffordd Stud, Adfa, Newtown giving up after 35 years of very successful breeding and his Minyffordd cobs have had a big influence world-wide; his three-year-old black filly Minyffordd Empress will be a valuable addition to the Three-B Stud, Llandysul, bought for £3,500. The striking seven-year-old section D palomino stallion Pantydwr Mister Nice Guy sold for £3,100 to Miss Pears of Bangor-on-Dee; he was successfully shown by his breeder Mr Paul Harper in youngstock classes at South Wales Shows and later won ridden classes for the London Stud. The six-year-old bay mare Greenwing Shannon’s Rose, grand-daughter of RW champion Trevallion Giorgio was sold to Miss Edwards of Pulborough, W Sussex and the sixteen-year-old chestnut mare Trevallion Princess Pandora, dam of some very good cobs over the years, went to Dr Etienne Stevens of Bourville, France who sold two, the two-year-old filly Thorneyside Lady’s Charm for £2,100 and the five-year-old Brynithon Lively Maid for £1,700. A chestnut filly foal with Brynithon and Thorneyside connections was Brynithon Super Lady which sold to Mr Peter Gray of Thorneyside for £3,000. Top section C colt foal at £3,000 was the dun Cascob Llanelwedd, his sire Menai Calon Lan was a HOYS finalist under saddle and his dam Felinmor Swynol was reserve youngstock champion at the RW. He was bought by J Deary of Burnhope, Co Durham who also bought another dun, the four-year-old Menai Miss Flash, granddaughter of the three-times RW winner Menai Sparkling Lady and she cost £2,600. A section C filly foal sold for £2,100 was Moelwyn Carmen sired by Moelwyn Paolo out of Neuaddparc Maid’s Pride; as fate dictated, the breeder took both her sire and dam to previous Sales but didn’t sell either and was rewarded by having £2,100 for Carmen from successful ridden producer Jane Wyatt of Christchurch, Dorset. Two section C filly foals which sold for £2,000 were Synod Rosie Peep Show sold to the Caerddaniel Stud of Walsall who have had great success with Synod bloodlines in the past and Cilmery Lollipop shown three times this year and winner every time and she was bought by Henrie Leeuwenhaag of Rossum, Holland.

The equal second-highest section C stallion (£3,000) to the perlino Burghwallis Welsh Wizard was the bay tenyear-old Gwenllan Mabon, champion at this year’s Royal Windsor Show he was bought by Miss Harmer of Chandlers Ford, Hampshire. Also at £3,000 from the Popsters/Parvadean Stud was the five-year-old chestnut Glynwyn Gift Of The Gab sired by Parvadean Geraint, he was bought by Mr Deabill of Totton, Hampshire. The 16-hand fifteen-year-old black Maesmynach Premier who had hunted with various packs for eight seasons sold to Mr J Garry of Morecambe for £2,300; Alec Jeffrey of Easingwood, York paid the same figure for the Maesmynachbred chestnut three-year-old Dunaire Sparky and S M Manning of Norwich paid £2,200 for the palomino three-year-old Desach Dewin.
