We have great fun in the office of Discover, sussing out all the events and activities going on locally from Winchester to Southampton, West Wellow to Wickham and Totton to Titchfield. There has been a notable increase in the number of festivals, both music and comedy, coming to the Solent area so we’re spoilt for choice in what to feature in your local Discover What’s On (see p6 & 44) – sorry, we can’t include everything!

The beautiful finishing touch to any room

The big venues such as The Mayflower and The Guildhall have been attracting well-known names and shows for years but I’d like to give some publicity to the acts on your doorstep. The Berry Theatre and The Point are two local arts centres with a great line up this autumn most notably, Danny Leigh opening the Eastleigh Film Festival and Patrick Kielty, comedian with his new stand up show, Help! (see p22 for details) As well as celebrities, Bitterne & West End has its share of talented business people such as maths tutor, Caroline of Boostmaths and Toby, the Bitterne Handyman who is your local fix it man or Chris of Woody’s Garden Maintenance (who installed my fantastic automatic watering system!). All great businesses on your doorstep! Discover Magazine is freely delivered through the letterboxes of the 14,000 homes and businesses with an SO18 and SO30 postcode; only possible through the support of our valued advertisers. So if you need a local business, look no further than Discover and say where you found them!

BEAUTY

We all know the risks, but when the sun is shining and we’re baring our pins on a golden beach, we can’t help but want a tan. Sometimes it’s OK to fake it, and tanning is one of those occasions. Don’t let the visions of Oompa Loompa lookalikes put you off; fake tans have come a long way and you no longer have to choose between milk bottle white or tangerine orange. For best results, wax or

Belle of the Beach Late nights, lazy days at the beach and endless mojitos… we do love summer holidays. Whether you’re heading off for a week in the Canaries, catching a cruise ship to the Caribbean, or just taking the kids camping to Cornwall, feast your eyes on our pick of the latest beauty releases.

If you like ‘buying British’ you’ll love the new British Botanical Shower Cream from Elemis, which uses UK-sourced ingredients such as chamomile, lavender, rosemary and oats. It smells divine and is incredibly nourishing. At £24 it is rather pricey, but definitely one to consider if you fancy treating yourself. Looking for a sun cream that’s suitable for all the family? Try Green People’s Organic Children Scent Free Sun Lotion, £16.95. It’s non-greasy and rubs in more easily than a lot of the other natural sunscreens on the market. Offering both UVA and

8

UVB protection, with a choice of SPF 25 or 30, it offers great all round protection. Plus it’s packed with fruit and seed oils, including avocado, olive and aloe vera, and is kind to sensitive skin. It is water-resistant, but won’t survive a long swim in the pool, so do make sure that you reapply it regularly.

shave the day before, exfoliate well, then follow with a body lotion. Wait until the lotion is fully absorbed before applying the tan. New to the UK market is Aussie tanning brand Black Magic. Try the Black Magic Instant Tanning Mousse, £23, which is tinted, extremely easy to apply and comes with a mitt to keep your hands stain-free. www.blackmagictan.co.uk If late night cocktails have left your skin looking a bit lacklustre, or you just don’t fancy slapping on foundation in the heat, give Origins GinZing™ EnergyBoosting Moisturizer, £23, a go. Designed to ‘wake up’ tired looking skin and leave it with a healthier looking glow, it’s no surprise that this has quickly become one of Origins’

‘hero’ products. A 75ml limited edition version was released this spring, featuring a funky coffee bean lid, but it was snapped up pretty quickly. Still, you may be lucky and find one lurking at the back of a shelf in Debenhams…

If you prefer a lipstick to a gloss, but hate the drying effect that some lipsticks can have, you’ll want to get your hands on one of the new Burt’s Bees Lip Crayons. 100% natural, the crayons use shea butter, jojoba oil and kendi oil to soften and moisturise your lips. I could still feel the difference by the next day. There are six shades available. My personal favourite is Sedana Sands – a natural pink with just a hint of caramel, which is perfect for summer. Burt’s Bees Lip Crayons are priced at £8.99 and are available from Debenhams, Fenwick and www.burtsbees.co.uk.

Come and be thrilled at the Romsey Show The Romsey Show, this year taking place on Saturday 12th September, certainly knows how to entertain the crowds. As well as a spectacular lineup of events, attractions, demonstrations and a stunning array of animals, the main ring attractions are going to include Jason Smyth with his Adrenaline Tour, one of the UK’s leading quad bike and motorbike stunt riders who provides an unrivalled display of tricks and Patrick Kempe, who will be showcasing the wonderful Iberian horses and riders all in appropriate saddlery and costume. Inspired by a stunt team he saw over 15 years ago, Jason Smyth set up the Adrenaline Tour in 2003 and has been addicted to the buzz ever since. With over 25 years of riding experience Jason is now challenging his stunt skills riding quad bikes and he is really looking forward to performing at the Romsey Show. He promises a sensational and awe-inspiring Show where the crowds will see him fly over 30 feet high, and 70 feet from ramp to ramp whilst

performing breathtaking aerial tricks. He will quad freestyle, catching items of memorabilia in mid-air and then awarding them to spectators, as well as the ever popular street style tricks where the action is brought close to the crowd. Jason also does an informative and humorous commentary via a microphone in his helmet as he does his stunts! He interacts with the audience even whilst flying 70 feet through the air to really get them involved in the show but the entertainment doesn’t end there. He also has a display unit where the public are encouraged to come and see the machines, chat with the team and even sit on one of the quad bikes if they wish. The other main ring attraction on hand to wow the crowd is Patrick Kempe who is going to kick the Show off to a flying start with his Iberian horses for a one-off performance. A team of Spanish and Portuguese Lusitano horses will be put through their paces showing the crowds traditional

tack and colourful costumes. The commentator will explain the whole display in an informative and entertaining way. Visitors will see young horses in the early stages of their training, advanced horses floating across the surface, forwards, sideways and backwards. The show will feature some work with the garrocha (the long pole used for rounding up cattle) and there will be a very jolly fellow who may need some help from the spectators. Once decorum has returned, you will be treated to the ever popular Flight of the Flags. It’s a full day of fun for all the family so make sure you don’t miss out! There is free car parking with a shuttle train to the entrance and there is free entry for children under 11. Top Tech For University Unbranded MiFi wireless adapter for 4G/3G phones

University is a time for studying, socialising and watching cult movies, and gadgets play a crucial part in all of those activities. So what technology should your teen or twenty-something be packing?

A laptop or a tablet is essential, and now that Windows 10 is available there are stacks of great laptops at rock-bottom prices. Most of the market is concentrated in the sub-£300 price range, but if you can afford to spend a little bit more you’ll be rewarded with better screens, more storage and smoother processors - all of which come in handy for both work and play.

Office, it’s still worth looking at Microsoft’s free OneNote program, which is available for PCs and Macs, iPads, iPhones and Android and which is a truly superb note-taking application. Apps can be great for non-uni things too: we love Paprika for storing recipes, Readly for magazines and Spotify or Apple Music for tunes.

Another wireless item to consider is a wireless speaker. The best ones use Bluetooth to connect to computers, phones

Last but not least, there’s the smartphone. In the unlikely event that your child doesn’t already have one, a decent Android phone such as the Motorola Moto G costs less than £150. It’s easy to program your own number into the speed dial and create a wallpaper that says CALL YOUR MOTHER.

Life doesn’t end when dementia begins

Don’t forget about a printer, too, but make sure you look into the cost of cartridges: many firms use the Gillette model, where the razor is given away at a loss and the money is made on the blades. Inkjet printers are notorious for this, so a printer that costs £30 might cost twice as much to run as a printer costing just a little bit more. Your child will need software too. Microsoft Office is the standard, although some specialist courses may require specialist software such as statistical analysis software. If it’s Office, though, the Office 365 for University deal is superb value for money: It’s £59.99 for a four-year subscription that covers 2 PCs, Macs or tablets, including iPads and Android devices. It also offers 1TB of online storage. If you don’t go for

One important issue for students is internet access. If it’s available in their flat or halls of residence, great, but if it isn’t you might be better off with mobile broadband rather than messing around with the hassle of fixed-line broadband connections with their minimum contracts. Prices start at £10.87 per month and the devices work anywhere with 4G data coverage, which means most big towns and cities.

or tablets, and if you avoid the very low end of the market you can get surprisingly good sound for surprisingly little money. Decent wireless speakers start at around £200, although it’s possible to spend much more. Unless you’re feeling flush and your child’s really into music, though, there’s no real need to do that.

If you find you need help and support, Alzheimer’s Society is here for you. A simple phone call can help reassure you that dementia is not the end. Start the conversation, get to know us, and we can begin to make a difference—together. Hampshire County Council Parks Hampshire’s country parks and nature reserves offer a fantastic day out and things to do for all the family, with picnic sites, play areas, visitor centres, nature trails and plenty of fresh air. Check for seasonal opening times before travelling.

Spot Deer at Bolderwood Bolderwood is situated in the heart of the New Forest along the Ornamental Drive. Here you have a car park which is free of charge (although there is donation box) where you can park your car and go off and experience some of the great sites the New Forest has to offer. It is one of the best places to see the deer as there is a purpose built platform which overlooks a large meadow. The platform is just a short walk from the car park. The deer get fed every day throughout the months of April and September and it is here that you will find herds of fallow deer regularly gathering around as they wait for a Forestry Commission Ranger to come and feed them. If you are lucky and time it right you can watch them being fed from the viewing platform. The feeding takes place anytime (when a ranger is free) between 12.30 and 2.30pm.

Explore The Coast Take a trip to the seaside! Hampshire has several beaches including Beachlands on Hayling Island which holds a European Blue Flag beach award. So on a hot summer’s day, why not go for a swim in the sea? Hayling Island beaches - For child-friendly, clean beaches head to Hayling Island near Chichester which holds a European Blue Flag beach award. It also won the Tidy Britain Seaside Award in recognition of the cleanliness and superb facilities of its beaches. Its five mile long seaside shore along the south of the island is divided into West Beachlands and Beachlands, the busier seafront area of Hayling Island where the Blue Flag beach is located. Hayling Island was the birthplace of windsurfing and remains a popular destination for watersport lovers. Netley - Royal Victoria Country Park in Netley overlooks approaches to the port as well as the dramatic Fawley oil refinery - popular with young families for picnics, woodland walks and kite flying. Former site of the Royal Victoria military hospital, all that remains is the old chapel, now a visitor centre.

EXCLUDING POLICY EXCESS

We deal directly with your Insurance Company!

INSURANCE CLAIMS REPAIR & RESTORATION My kids love your music - we’re always singing to it out loud in the car. Do you get a lot of people saying that? Yeah and I always intend it to be a bit that way - I always want big choruses so people can sing the lyrics. You’ve got fans that are 2 and 4 years old in my house! I love that. I get that a lot actually. I like to study my audience before they come in and it’s amazing to see the eclectic age range. It means that my records are going out to anyone who appreciates it and likes it. The new single ‘Come And Get It’. Where did you write it? I wrote it in Los Angeles, where I wrote most of the record this time. I was there for six or seven months and it was incredible. I wanted to make a record that felt good in the sun in your car.

So the people who are name dropping. Are they the big names? No. It’s the flock of sheep that are running around searching for those people. And you realise “where are all the successful people who’ve done very well with their lives” are working hard and being successful! You’re a Yorkshire boy. Did you enjoy growing up there? It was alright. To the age of sixteen, it’s all well and good running around and making bonfires and building dens. That’s the great bit! Until you get to sixteen when you’re a bit like “I’ll be judged if I carry on doing that” and then every day becomes a cycle. So it’s quite nice to break away and do something different.

What was it like living in LA?

I’m going to get out of here and be famous guys. I’m going to hit rock and roll. Just watch me!

It’s good if you take it with a pinch of salt.

Oh I’d never have the ego to say that.

Yes. I think it’s important to remember my stern northern mother! People would tell me how many celebrities they’d bumped into. Is it very ‘name droppy out there’? It’s SO name-droppy. Can you get away with not being like that? Yes. You just can’t get involved in it.

Eastleigh Film Festival With one-off interactive cinematic experiences and classic films in Eastleigh town centre, Eastleigh Film Festival puts the excitement back into the movies... Film 2015’s chief critic Danny Leigh hosts opening night Eastleigh Film Festival launched last year to a great audience reception. Sold-out events included Dawn of The Dead at the Swan Shopping Centre, a mouthwatering screening of foodie flick Big Night at La Fenice restaurant, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see bowling comedy The Big Lebowski in Eastleigh’s Hollywood Lanes equivalent – AMF Bowling. This year, the festival is set to return with a packed week of events and a little help from a big name in film journalism. Danny Leigh – co-host of BBC One’s flagship review show Film 2015 – will host the Festival’s opening night. Danny played an integral role in launching the inaugural Eastleigh Film Festival in 2014. This time, Danny has selected his favourite films from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s at eastleighfilmfestival.com, and now it’s up to the public to choose the winning film. The favourite choice of classic movie will return to the big screen to open the festival this September. Here’s the choices so go online and help decide the winning films! 22

GARDENING

Raking out can be combined with scarifying, where you use a spring tined rake to aggressively rake the surface of the lawn, so that dead moss, thatch (the accumulated bits of dead grass and other lawn debris) and any other surface debris are removed. Once done, you will find that the lawn looks a lot worse than it did when you started, as it will look thinner and more moth-eaten. However, scarifying helps to ensure that the grasses receive plenty

Lovely Lawns By Pippa Greenwood

Almost every garden has a lawn, and there is a lot you can do to keep it in good condition. Don’t wait until spring but get to work now with some autumn lawn care to keep your lawn looking healthy and green.

Large weeds in small lawns are best removed by hand, perhaps using a sturdy old kitchen knife – perfect for removing dandelions, small clumps of daisies and other weeds missed by the mower. You should also take a look at the level of moss in the lawn: when green and luxuriant it can look quite attractive, but once it dies out the lawn will look really awful. On the whole, moss in lawns is encouraged by compaction, poor drainage of the soil and lawn surface and by excessive shading, perhaps by nearby trees or herbaceous plants in adjacent borders. It is worth doing anything you can to alleviate these problems, and for shading you should prune back shrubs which overhang the lawn or have trees professionally crown thinned or lifted, so that more light gets through to the lawn. Herbaceous plants are easily dealt with by using bamboo canes and string to ease them up and away from the grass. Compaction is relatively easy to deal with, and in small areas where the problem is not too bad, you can use a normal garden fork. Drive this

32

into the lawn every 10 – 15 cm (4 – 6 in) and ease it back and forth slightly to enlarge the holes created by the tines of the fork. This creates some drainage channels, which will also improve aeration. On very heavy sites or where compaction is bad, use a hollow tine aerator. These can be bought as attachments for some lawnmowers, or you can buy or hire a dedicated machine or piece of equipment. A hollow tine aerator removes cylinders of turf and the soil beneath, thus producing a better effect than using a garden fork. Once aerated, brush a sandy top dressing mixture into all the holes, using a mixture of sieved garden soil and horticultural sand, perhaps mixed with a small quantity of sieved leaf mould. The top dressing ensures that the holes are kept open to allow better drainage and aeration over a longer period. Use a proprietary moss killer if moss is really out of control, applied exactly according to the manufacturer’s instructions; you should make sure that the moss is killed off completely before you attempt to rake it out.

of air and allows for better re-growth; have faith, the situation will improve. If you still have bare areas once you have improved the texture of the soil and fixed drainage problems, then re-seed or overseed using a suitable grass-seed mixture. To improve germination and speed of growth, pin a piece of horticultural fleece or Enviromesh over the newly sown area. This will help keep it warmer and prevent birds from stealing the grass seed.

Serving the families of Southampton and Solent area for 145 years

When three old school pals met for the first time since their sixth form days this photo brought back many memories and sparked plans for a class reunion - 40 years on. At the start in March the three knew of only six others from the Barton Peveril class of ‘75 but since then word of mouth, internet searches and the help of other enthusiasts have put the reunion organisers in touch with more than 100 of their college mates. The group’s locations range from Hampshire to as far afield as Australia and New Zealand and their list of occupations is almost an A-Z of careers from accountant and business entrepreneur to writer and zoologist.

sixth form college, and were the first graduates of the new system. It was previously a grammar school and half of this year group had attended since age 11. For the reunion on November 21, a return visit has been arranged to the college, now completely remodelled. The class of 75 will find that the ‘New Block’ has been replaced by the even newer Hampshire Building, and the temporary ‘terrapin’ huts by the Nobel Building. The assembly hall, scene of productions of

Macbeth, My Fair Lady and Oh! What a Lovely War, has become a smaller, lecture theatre. The organisers would love to hear from more people in the photo, or others who studied in the same year group between 1968 and 1975. They can email bpclassof75@yahoo.co.uk. There’s also information on the Facebook page www.facebook. com/BartonPeverilClassof75 Jane Page, Jenny Heal and Jayne Pickett

Shieldhall Still Steaming At 60! The Southampton-based SS Shieldhall – the oldest passenger cargo steamship still active in Europe – celebrated her 60th birthday with a 3 hr cruise on Sunday 5 July, following some of the route taken whilst in service with Southern Water in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The Shieldhall Stompers Jazz Band were on board, making sure that everything went with a swing. Guests included The Mayor, Councillor Linda Norris, in her capacity as Admiral of the Port of Southampton, and many other

supporters who had assisted Shieldhall through the years. A former sludge carrier for the Glasgow Corporation, launched in July 1955 on the Clyde at the famous Lobnitz Shipyard, Shieldhall performed a similar role for Southern Water before being purchased by the Solent Steam Packet charity, who continue to operate her today. Now, thanks in part to a £1.4 million HLF grant project ‘Saving Shieldhall: Learning through Conservation in Action’, Shieldhall is able to offer a varied and attractive cruise programme, with excursions scheduled this year until mid-September. Guests on Shieldhall get a lot more than a conventional cruise along Southampton Water. Visits to the Engine and Boiler Rooms and the Bridge are actively encouraged by the team of volunteers who manage the ship.

Shieldhall HLF Project Director Graham Mackenzie notes: ‘We are told that the interaction with our volunteers is a highlight of everyone’s time on board. We are also looking to improve levels of comfort for our passengers, with the inclusion of an awning on the upper deck proving a great success in 2014. We›re now much better equipped for whatever the great British weather can throw at us!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southampton area and Justin is finding that his approach is

a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done

work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Don’t be misled when buying your new kitchen Quali

ty

. Convenience . Choice . Service

You’ve all seen the advertisements for ½ price kitchens, free appliances and all the extra “Bells and Whistles” some companies offer. Well don’t believe everything you see, as they say… If it’s too good to be true then it probably isn’t true!

And that’s because the installation costs they charge can almost double the price of your kitchen. We at Ashmore Kitchens, being a small independent family run business, do not make such claims, nor do we charge extortionate prices to install your kitchen. Our small team of designers and installers offer a complete design, supply and installation service at a fraction of the price of other companies. We do not compromise on quality either, all our kitchens are manufactured in the UK, using only the very best components and suppliers.

HALLOWEEN FESTIVAL 24 Oct to 1 Nov Marwell Wildlife, SO21 1JH Design a pumpkin for carving and watch our animals explore and eat their pumpkin treats. Be enthralled by spooky storytelling with our resident witch, uncover the mysteries of Marwell through our fact-packed talk and have bundles of fun on our scarecrow selfie. www.marwell.org.uk

So before you commit to spending more than you intended, call us for a FREE, all inclusive quotation NOW! We’re sure that you will get a pleasant surprise. Ashmore Kitchens… ”Bringing the heart of your home into your home”
