Join the Adventure at the New Forest and Hampshire County Show! The New Forest & Hampshire County Show will be held at New Park, Brockenhurst on 28th, 29th and 30th July 2015. This year, the Show is delighted to announce, the attendance of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment with their exciting and dynamic Musical Ride as the Main Ring attraction. Their performances showcase the very best of military equestrianism and tradition and the spectacular team will perform a dynamic performance to wow the crowds. It is certainly a wonderful sight not to be missed. The troop, all mounted on black horses and resplendent in full ceremonial uniform, will give two performances on all three days of the Show. As well as this spectacular attraction, the Show will once again

welcome the Ringwood Brewery Heavy Horse Musical Drive whose wonderful grace and agility will astound you. In contrast feel the excitement rise as the Inter Hunt Relay race over their testing course of jumps, so the louder you cheer the faster they go! Our theme for this year is ‘Join the Adventure’ so why not come along and try your hand at milking a cow, painting and potting, fishing and forestry or perhaps even take part in the tractor tug of war. Visit the Forest Fun Factory and be entertained by clowns, choirs, dance acts and much more! Make sure you head over to our Show Farm where the children can get up close and personal with all sorts of farmyard animals. Pop into our Countryside Area for Terrier and Ferret racing and enjoy the incredible machines in the Old Time Farming section. Follow our education trails around the Showground to learn more about agriculture, food and farming. We will certainly be celebrating our love of horses as we host over 150 showing, jumping and in-hand

classes. From the traditional New Forest pony to the magnificent show jumpers there are horses for all to enjoy. One area not to be missed is the Flower Show which boasts beautifully landscaped gardens, a plant hunters’ paradise highlighting the best horticulture from trade nurseries. The Southern Vegetable Championships and Flower Arranging competitions also produce a magnificent display and are a must-see part of the Show. There are over 600 trade stands providing some of the most varied and unusual goods and produce – from large commercial companies to small local businesses. For those of you looking to make that special purchase we really are a shoppers’ paradise. During a fun packed day at the Show, why not enjoy the vast range of food available, or visit the Food Hall for some wellearned refreshments. Whether you live in the local area or are visiting on holiday, make the New Forest & Hampshire County Show an essential part of this year’s calendar and enjoy the adventure. These days, there seems to be “fest” for everything; food, music, arts, craft and cars (thanks to Chris Evans) and even a tattoo festival (4 July Ageas Bowl). Open air festivals and British weather don’t go together well but this doesn’t dampen our spirits. We’ve learnt to be spontaneous as we make a dash for the event at the hint of sun breaking through the cloudy sky or we just go anyway, despite the weather, armed with umbrellas, wellies and trusty cardigan (I draw the line at those yellow plastic bag “ponchos” sported by overseas tourists!) At Discover, one of our favourite festivals is Hampshire Food Festival (1 July – 2 Aug) as we are invited to the press launch to sample local producers’ wares (we’ve featured four on p12); chutney, ice-cream, cakes, cheeses, wines and beers…mmm, my mouth is watering just writing about it. There are workshops, demonstrations, tours, tasters and special menus to celebrate the best of Hampshire food and drink ... too much going on to list in the magazine so please visit www.hampshirefare.co.uk or you can call 023 8073 3830 to request a programme by post. Other days out for the calendar are The New Forest Show (p3), the local Let’s Rock in Southampton Common, The Day of Music at the Brickworks (p42) and many more events in our popular what’s on pages. So rain or shine, enjoy.

. Convenience . Choice . Service

You’ve all seen the advertisements for ½ price kitchens, free appliances and all the extra “Bells and Whistles” some companies offer. Well don’t believe everything you see, as they say… If it’s too good to be true then it probably isn’t true!

And that’s because the installation costs they charge can almost double the price of your kitchen. We at Ashmore Kitchens, being a small independent family run business, do not make such claims, nor do we charge extortionate prices to install your kitchen. Our small team of designers and installers offer a complete design, supply and installation service at a fraction of the price of other companies. We do not compromise on quality either, all our kitchens are manufactured in the UK, using only the very best components and suppliers. And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes

Waiting to board the plane for our weekend in Nice, my breathing became shallow, my hands felt clammy and my heart began to race. But it wasn’t the terror of being entombed in a silver tube burning gallons of kerosene in an illogical attempt to defy gravity, rather it was my other flying phobia - a brat sat in the seat behind. After our furious dash across the tarmac elbowing nonpriority boarders out of the way (we’d paid three quid extra to be treated like VIPs you see), we stored our luggage and settled into our seats. As Sarah began debating which variety of microwaved toasty to scald her mouth with, I commenced my nervous fidgeting. I craned my neck, scanning for infants.

worried about, it’s that red faced urchin I don’t like the look of.” The smug thirty-something parents scanned the row numbers as they squeezed themselves inexorably nearer. Thirty one, thirty two, thirty.... three - there, perfect. And where do you think they ended up? You know it brother. The smiling cabin crew snapped the overheads shut and fussed everyone into their places as the Irish lilt of the pilot’s voice reassuringly purred our route over the PA system.

“They seem a perfectly nice family to me.”

I closed my eyes. Maybe the kid with E numbers smeared over his sticky intemperate mush would be perfectly behaved, maybe he would just nod off in his Mummy’s arms? What did it matter that he was directly behind my head? The flight was short, it didn’t… thump! Oh no, we hadn’t even taken off and it had started. Thump!

“It’s not Mum and Dad I’m

It isn’t the actual kick that

“Tom, just relax. We will be off in a minute.” “Look, there’s one coming now, and it’s getting nearer.”

8

drives you insane, it’s the anticipation of the tiny toes tapping the back of your seat that’s so unbearable. “Tom, just ignore the little chap, we’ll be there before you know it, read your guide to Nice.” “I am trying to ignore it (thump), but it’s not easy when you have parents who can’t control their blasted kid (thump).” “Tom! Shush, they’ll hear you!” “Good!”(Thump). As the big tin bird eased herself into the stratosphere, the blonde terror behind succumbed to fatigue and fell into a fitful slumber. I closed my eyes and tried to join the little darling. Unfortunately, my attempt at a cat nap was shattered by the racket from the well-padded lady in the seat next to mine. Her vast paw swirled inside her plastic cashew tub, like Trevor Brooking choosing the FA Cup quarter finalists.

Finally content with her haul, she pulled yet another catch of nuts from her bucket. Her powerful elbow, nudging me with each swirl, was like a JCB digger excavating a drain. As she daintily tossed nuts into her pie hole with all the skill of a serial grazer, I leaned over to Sarah and whispered,

from deafening me, roused the little cherub sitting behind. And off we went again! Thump! “Right, that’s it, I’m going to say something!” “Tom! Please, we’re nearly there!”

“Shush Tom, she’ll hear you.”

“I’m sorry Sarah but this is ridiculous (thump). Excuse me, I’m sorry to bother you, but can you not control you child? I’m not bothered but my wife is getting very angry.”

“Good!” (Nudge).

“Tom!”

Then thankfully, she nodded off. A moment’s pause, then inevitably, the snoring began. Her huge proboscis making a noise like a gnu with sinus trouble - Zzzzzzphhh!

Sarah squeezed her head next to mine through the little gap between the head rests. With our faces squashed together, we must have looked quite alarming. She tried to smile, but the glare from the brat’s

“Do you think she’s coming to Nice to sample the gastronomy? (Nudge).

This terrible cacophony, apart

Mother was enough to make her retreat. Sat back in her seat, Sarah’s weapon of choice (elbow) was immediately deployed to painful effect. “How dare you bring me into it.” (Dig) “Ow! I...wanted to present a united front?” (Thump, Zzzzz) “In future Tom, leave me out of your squabbles please.” “Whatever you say dear and by the way, this is going to bruise.” “Good! And so will this one, hopefully!” (Dig). Oh, the joys of being a jet setter.....

LIFE BEGINS

Care Home Conundrum: Responding to a Relative’s Complaints By Kate McLelland When I visited my 92-yearold mother at her residential care home recently, she wasn’t in a good mood. Her purse was missing and she was convinced that the cleaners were to blame: “They’ve stolen it! And I had thirty pounds in there.”

Although I checked her handbag, rifled through her chest of drawers, searched in the laundry basket and even bent down to peer under the bed, the purse was nowhere to be seen. It wasn’t until she stood up, ready to accompany me to the manager’s office, that I realised she had been sitting on it all the time. This story will undoubtedly be familiar to many people with an elderly relative living in residential care. It’s often hard to know what to do when someone who may be suffering from confusion or mild dementia complains about a care issue. Should you take their concern seriously or just put it down to their age and mental condition?

Moira’s decision to check out her aunt’s complaint – no matter how far-fetched it sounded – was undoubtedly the right course of action. Confusion in elderly people can lead them to make false accusations but the same confusion also makes it easy for care workers to get away with poor standards of care and sometimes, actual abuse.

Sending out a signal

Moira Wilson from Cumbria was worried when her elderly aunt kept insisting that a young male, carer – Jack - was bothering her. Her aunt told her that Jack had said he loved her and often stood at the foot of the bed, watching her.

My mother – who is almost blind and has limited mobility – gets help with showering twice a week at her nursing home. When, on a number of occasions, she told me that she hadn’t been washed “Because the shower isn’t working”, I began to be suspicious. On some days she had her shower as usual and on others it mysteriously refused to work: what’s more, it seemed more likely to break down at times when a particular carer was there.

“The home had a good reputation so I didn’t like to complain,” says Moira. “But you hear all these stories about elderly abuse and it played on my mind. I thought she’d probably imagined

All it took was a friendly email followed by a brief chat with the manager. After that, the problem disappeared and mum has enjoyed regular showers ever since.

Better safe than sorry

14

it, but I had to be sure. To my great relief the manager told me that they had no male carers currently working there.”

Sometimes that’s all it takes to sort out a problem: the very act of making an enquiry can signal to staff that are not pulling their weight that their actions are being monitored. If the problem is not easily resolved then your emails will provide a written record in the event that the dispute escalates.

New legislation to combat abuse The charity Action on Elder Abuse describes abuse as: “A single or repeated act or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person.” Recently new legislation has been introduced in response to the Mid-Staffs and Winterbourne View abuse cases. The Care Act 2014 comes into force in two

stages, between April 2015 and April 2016, providing a new statutory basis for safeguarding vulnerable adults and making it easier to prosecute managers who have allowed an abusive culture to exist in their organisations. The public will also be able to see ‘Ofstedstyle’ ratings for hospitals and care homes so they can make comparisons between organisations and services. The Act also introduces a new, lower threshold for lodging a complaint with a local authority where abuse is suspected. An official enquiry can now be triggered if there is a “reasonable cause to suspect” abuse and this means that problems can be reported much earlier, before they lead to serious physical harm or longterm mental distress.

The right time to complain When an older person swaps their own home for a residential care setting, they will inevitably have minor niggles about the care they are receiving. These comments may be just a way of letting off steam, but it’s important to keep listening. If you detect that an issue is causing real anxiety or distress, then you must act. If your relative is able to explain the problem, you should encourage and support them as they speak to the care supervisor or manager. If not, don’t be afraid to approach these people yourself: a good care home should welcome your feedback. Making a complaint is never entirely easy, but it’s a small price to pay if it means that someone you love will receive better care and attention in future.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southampton area and Justin is finding that his approach is

a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done

work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

BEAUTY

Beauty and the Beach By Kate Duggan Whether you’re planning a staycation, or a round the world trip, camping or a five-star hotel stay, read on for our pick of summer beauty essentials.

For many of us, slapping on foundation is the last thing we fancy doing on a summer’s day. If you’re looking to ditch your foundation, but still want some coverage, try a Blemish Balm (BB). Similar to a tinted moisturiser, but with added benefits, a BB cream hydrates and primes your skin, while helping to even out your complexion. Pacifica Alight Multi Mineral BB Cream is a steal at just £16.99 from www.naturisimo. com. It’s perfect for creating that fresh-faced “I’ve had eight hours sleep and always get my five-a-day” glow. Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Bricks are a bit of a cult favourite, and the new Brightening Bricks (£34) look set to become just as popular. You use them in much the same way as you

20

would a blusher, but the multi-tones help to avoid ‘Aunt Sally’ cheeks, and make for a far more natural, youthful effect. Some face powders can be very drying, but these have been designed to actually lock moisture into the skin, while absorbing oil to keep shine at bay. Choose from six shades, including coral (pictured below left). You need to protect your skin from the sun all year around, but it’s even more vital in the warmer months. If you suffer from eczema, psoriasis or other skin complaints, you may want to opt for a natural sunscreen, that’s less likely to irritate your skin. Neal’s Yard Remedies Chamomile & Aloe Vera Moisturising Sun Lotion gets our vote. continued on p22

www.thebreeze.com 21

It’s 100% natural, has an SPF of 25, and offers both UVA and UVB protection. At £20 for 150ml, it is pretty pricey, but it offers additional skincare benefits. Usually, it’s best to buy a separate facial sun cream, as most body creams are quite greasy, leading to spots and skin irritation. However, this lotion is gentle enough to be used all over, and is packed with nourishing ingredients, such as shea and coconut oils. While it is water resistant, it’s unlikely to survive a full on swim in the sea, so do remember to reapply

it regularly. Ah the joys of trying to fit all of your make-up and toiletries into your suitcase. Travel sized versions of your favourite toiletries can be much more expensive, per millilitre, than their big sisters. A cheaper option is to invest in some refillable bottles. Do make sure that at least some of them are under 100ml, if you want to keep them in your hand luggage when flying. Some sets

even come complete with a see through bag, so there’s no faffing around for a plastic bag at the airport check-in. We like The Body Shop’s Travel Kit, £7, which has three bottles, two jars and a handy spatula. Miniatures are, however, a great way to try new skincare ranges without forking out for a full sized product that might not suit your skin. If you’re looking to treat yourself to a new travel washbag to house all your new goodies, we’re lusting after the Orla Kiely Large Washbag in Floating Flower, which has three separate compartments and a hook to hang it up. Treat yourself for £32 at www.Cuckooland.com.

MOTORING

Top 5 Eco Cars By James Baggott @CarDealerEd

As the costs to run our beloved petrol- and diesel-powered cars increase, it’s no wonder we’re all on the hunt for an alternative solution. With electric and hybrid powertrains driving some of the industry’s most esteemed supercars – the new Honda NSX and BMW i8 – it would appear that there is another way forward. But if eco is at the forefront of your mind, which car should you have on your driveway? Here are our choices.

Ford Fiesta

The Fiesta is the best selling car on the market – and not without good reason. Although it’s not labelled an official ‘eco’ car, its low running costs make it the ideal cost-effective solution for most buyers. Choose the 1.4-litre TDCi, priced from £13,065, and you can expect an average mileage of 68mpg and emissions of 107g/km.

Fiat 500

The Fiat 500 completes the ‘Thee Musketeers’ line-up, alongside the Mini and VW Beetle, as one of today’s most stylish cars. Running a 1.2-litre engine, the 500 TwinAir can achieve 49.6 urban mpg and dodges road tax by emitting just 95g/km of CO2. The TwinAir is priced from £12,715 and is the perfect city run around.

BMW i3

BMW’s futuristic i3 is one of just a few cars that has revolutionised the way we view the future of motoring. Not only does it combine eco-friendly driving with premium qualities, it can also reach 93mph, can go from 0-60mph in 7.9 seconds and has a driving range of 106 miles, thanks to its onboard petrol motor, which works alongside a 127kW electric unit. Sadly, its £29,130 price means we don’t see many of them on the road.

Volkswagen E-Up!

The E-Up! is one of the most practical and reasonably-priced electric cars on the market, with five doors and an estimated driving range of 93 miles. It takes six hours to recharge and has a comfortable top speed of 81mph. The price isn’t so attractive at £19,525, but this electric motor is close to feeling more like the average supermini.

Renault Twizy

Renault’s Twizy is just as fun as it looks. It may be the slowest of the pack, with a top speed of just 56mph, but it’s guaranteed to provide you with the most entertainment. Priced at £7,795, its 15kW battery takes four hours to charge, it has a driving range of 62 miles and emits zero emissions. And just look at its styling! 30

GARDENING

Making a Pest of Themselves by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com

They might be small but aphids (also widely known as greenfly and blackfly) can do an awful lot of damage to just about every plant in your garden - and greenhouse, conservatory and windowsill for that matter. They are one of the most common and widespread garden pests, with more than five hundred different species found in the United Kingdom alone.

Greenfly and blackfly vary massively in colour, from green or black to grey, yellow, pink, brown or khaki. The majority are about 2mm long Most damage is done throughout spring and summer but there are aphids feeding somewhere pretty well throughout the year. In sheltered parts of your garden, especially in the warmer counties or in greenhouses and conservatories, some can be found even during the cooler winter months. So what makes these tiny pests so successful and so damaging to our precious plants? The main reason is that they can breed rapidly and so their numbers build up incredibly fast and this is often done asexually or without need of a male. For much of the year females are predominant and give birth to huge numbers of genetically identical offspring. I always think of this as like a Russian doll – inside a female aphid there will be young aphid, and inside this there will be an aphid embryo. Later in the season male aphids may be produced and these then mate with the females. The symptoms they cause vary, but include leaf yellowing or other brightly coloured discolouration, puckering, poor growth and stunting.

32

As they feed on plants, aphids may transmit virus infections, so virus symptoms may develop too. The plant sap on which the aphids feed has an extremely high sugar content; in fact it is so sugary that the aphids cannot digest it all, so their excreta is very sticky and sugary. This is called ‘honeydew’ and you may have noticed it beneath aphid-infested plants such as lime trees or as a sticky layer on roses and other plants. Because it is so sugary, honeydew attracts harmless black ‘sooty moulds’ which make the leaves look as if someone has sprinkled soot on them. As aphids increase in size they shed their skins and the cast skins are often easy to spot on host plants – they look rather like the discarded pyjamas often seen on a teenager’s bedroom floor! If you grow roses you’ll have discovered that there are several species of aphid which may attack them, often forming dense colonies on shoot tips, new leaf growth and flower buds. These aphids are mostly green, pinkish or yellowish in colour and up to 3mm long. There is usually a lot of honeydew followed by sooty mould, as well as stunting and distortion of the leaves. If vegetables are more your thing then you may see the black bean aphid as it forms dense colonies Continued on p34

especially at the shoot tips and beneath the leaves of broad beans in the spring, which causes weakening and a huge drop in the number of those tasty pods. It also attacks globe artichokes, dahlias, poppies and nasturtiums. In the spring the aphid feeds on Philadelphus and Viburnum. If you pinch out the aphidencrusted shoot tips on beans the problem is often solved. Another common one is the woolly aphid which attacks apple trees and is also often seen on ornamental Malus such as crab apples, pyracantha and cotoneaster. Colonies of the aphid covered with white, waxy, fluffy fibres develop on the bark, especially near pruning cuts on older stems, or on younger stems where they also cause swellings on the stem. Another common problem on fruit is the currant Blister Aphid, a small, pale green

aphid which feeds beneath the leaves, mostly of redcurrants, with pale yellow or reddish blisters forming in spring and summer. It is pretty well impossible to garden without aphids causing some grief – I for one have never managed it. So what can you do? There are a number of different ways that you can reduce aphid numbers in your garden or greenhouse. Encouraging naturally occurring predators such as blue tits, ladybirds, hoverflies and lacewings will all help. In some situations it is also worth introducing biological controls and these work especially well in an enclosed area such as a greenhouse or conservatory but will often have a noticeable effect in warmer summers outside too. Aphid predators such as the larva of the midge Aphidoletes and even ladybirds,

can all be purchased, as can the tiny parasitic wasp Aphidius. Ladybirds (available as native British ladybird adults or as their young or larvae from my website, www.pippagreenwood. com) are perfect for using on aphid outbreaks anywhere in the garden from pots and borders to hanging baskets and hedges. The great thing with these is that, once established they will start to breed, multiply and add to the natural ladybird population. There are a number of different chemicals (including organic or ‘green’ ones such as those based on fatty acids or plant oils) available for controlling aphid pests too, but not all are suitable for use on every plant, so check the label carefully before buying or using, and always follow the instructions carefully.
