One last summer hurrah (and hooray!)
Despite its really slow start, summer did eventually warm up and July and August were (mostly) warm and dry. We don’t really book a holiday in the summer, but we do like going to music festivals so I was particularly relieved to be able to leave my wellies at home this year. But it’s not over yet (she said, tempting weather fate). One last big event to go in this area and that’s Bestival on the Isle of Wight. Now, if you are over 30 or even (ahem) considerably over 30, you might imagine it’s not for you. But if you love music I can promise you it’s worth going. Despite what you might think, nobody cares about your age, your waistline or your fashion sense. In many ways it’s like being invited to a cool party, but without feeling like a fish out of water. And besides, with The Human League and The Cure being two of the headline artists, they need some ‘grown-ups’ to sing along. Clearly going to an event like this is not a cheap weekend away. It is excellent value for money though and what’s more it’s so much more than just music. Going to the WI tea tent, visiting the astrology area, booking onto a paper-cutting workshop, the world’s biggest bouncy castle, watching the falconry display, circus acts, comedy and poetry. All that is just a taster of what will be on from the 8th to the 11th September. I’ll be there. It’s a long winter ahead of us, so let’s be gloriously happy again and enjoy the last big event of the year. For the full Bestival lineup see page 12.

Such is the joy of having grown up kids - no more gymnastics, swimming or football practice - hurrah! So, what to do? A stroll round the park with Olly, my faithful hound? A trip to the corner shop to splurge four quid on a ream of newsprint? A long leisurely morning in the kitchen creating my signature dish jambon et œuf buttie à la sauce tomate? Unfortunately, my hopes for the perfect Saturday morning were dashed by my dearly beloved Sarah, who had the answer for which I hadn’t been searching: “Tom, are we finally going to clear out that garage?” Knowing that resistance was useless, I peered through the dusty gloom and began yanking old bikes, boxes of records and other long forgotten bric-a-brac from the darkest recesses of the garage. Then my eureka moment: “Sarah I’ve had a brilliant idea - and don’t look at me like that let’s take this lot to the car boot sale!” Realising that the car boot bee was firmly stuck in my entrepreneurial bonnet, Sarah reluctantly agreed and so, with the Mondeo Ghia packed to the gunwales with twenty years of dedicated hoarding and with my wallpaper paste board firmly secured on the roof rack, we 10
headed off to a dusty farmer’s field located somewhere in the neighbouring parish. In very short order I had set out my stall. Sylvanian houses to my left, fondue set to my right, golf shoes (worn once) in the middle. And so, with my thermos gently steaming, we waited for the hordes of bargain hunters to descend. Eventually a wizened old dear, nearly bent over double, shuffled up to our makeshift emporium. She rattled one of my Tupperware containers (helpfully marked odds and sods) as I craned my neck in an attempt to catch her drift. “How much for this zip?” she enquired. I examined the dusty old fastener. “Err, that particular item, madam, is five pence.” “Is that your best price?” “Yes.” “I’ll leave it thanks.” As the ancient shopper shuffled away, Sarah began testily rearranging her gnomes. “Tom, If we’d just gone to the tip we’d be home by now.” “Did you know Lord Sugar began on a market stall?” Just then I spotted a mature gentleman sporting a handle-bar moustache and wearing a tatty blue blazer surreptitiously rifling through my collection of 45s (for anyone born after 1986, 45s

Searching around the market for support I yelled, “Twenty quid? For this collection? Are you trying to insult me? Twenty!?” “Tom, we’re not in a Souk. Take the money and shut up.” As the clouds gathered we packed
up and headed home, a total of £37.18 to the good. The following week I was sitting quietly enjoying Bargain Hunt when Sarah plopped the local rag into my lap. “Recognise him?” She pointed to an article entitled ‘Local Collector Unearths Rare Madonna Imported Single’. “I knew there was something dodgy about that moustache!” “What I’m more worried about is the thought of a teenage Tom prancing around his bedroom singing along to ‘Holiday’.” And so the happy memories of a gilded youth recede just a little further into the distance...

With over five million albums sold to date, Corinne Bailey Rae has had a stellar decade in the music industry. With a new album out, she spoke to The Breeze’s Lucy Ambache about music, the joys of working in L.A. and the dangers of curly hair when you live in Leeds.

You’ve been missing in action for quite a while - 6 years to be exact. You don’t make a quick album do you? I don’t. No, I love to take my time. I really enjoy the process – I love writing songs, I love travelling and meeting new people, and working with new musicians. I’ve really learnt a lot about being a producer on this record. I probably took more time than I needed to, because I was loving it so much.
It’s called ‘The Heart Speaks In Whispers’. Give me the lowdown. Well the album is all about listening to the inner voice – quietening down all the chaos and drama that surrounds us to find out what’s going on inside. How nature, our bodies, our subconscious, our instincts all tell us about what’s happening in our heart. You make a lady look glamorous with a guitar. You’ve always done that as a singer songwriter but with femininity.
Well I wanted to have those heels on I guess! I love playing guitar and when I first started, I was in an indie band where it was all baby doll dresses and we all wanted to be Courtney Love. Now I feel that I’m coming into my own style.
The album was made half in Leeds, half in LA right?
I built a studio in Leeds. After my last record I wanted to have somewhere I could put all my instruments, and be playful, and we managed to make it a scene we really liked. Then we thought it would be great to go to Los Angeles and work with some different musicians – some who had been on my wish-list for a long time. But you still love being in Leeds?
I do! I guess I grew up there, both my parents are there, my sister is there at the moment, and I think it has a really good music scene. But I also like getting on the aeroplane and getting to travel as well so I feel lucky that I get to do both things. Your music travels really far doesn’t it? It has given you the ability to go around the world.
It’s a really funny thing when you release records because you never know who’s going to get to hear them. My first record was on tape in India, which I didn’t know and I’ve got friends who say things like ‘I’ve just got back from Thailand and you were playing in the restaurant’ so it’s amazing because I feel my songs have got to places I haven’t got to yet.
One of the songs on the album is titled ‘Hey I Won’t Break Your Heart’. Come on, you can’t guarantee that!
That song’s interesting because it’s about love the second time around with the same person. It’s about doing it and thinking ‘you have really hurt me but let’s trust each other’. I think as you get older, you have these crazy experiences in love and it’s not just some cookie cutter, puppy dog thing. It can be really intense. 20

Tarte Bourdaloue
This classic French tart has a lovely rich almond frangipane filling. Choose pears that are firm, but not rock hard.
Ingredients: • 225g ready-made puff pastry • 75g unsalted butter, softened • 75g caster sugar • 2 medium eggs, beaten • 1 tsp almond extract • 75g plain flour • 100g ground almonds • 3 firm pears, peeled, halved and cored • 2 tbsp apricot glaze, warmed (see Tip)
Serves 6 - 8 Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes, plus chilling
TIP Look out for small jars of apricot glaze in the baking sections of supermarkets, or make your own by pushing 3-4tbsp of warmed apricot jam through a fine-holed sieve. 30
1. Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 23cm round fluted flan tin. Trim the edges and prick the pastry all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
2. Beat the butter and sugar together in a bowl until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs, then the almond extract. Sift over the flour and fold in with the ground almonds to make a smooth mixture. Preheat the oven to 200C/fan 180C/Gas 6. Place a heavy baking sheet in the oven to heat up.
3. Spread the mixture in an even layer in the chilled pastry case. Place one pear half, cut side down, on a board. Using a sharp knife, carefully slice widthways through the pear half about 10 times. Repeat with the other pear halves, keeping them in their shape.
4. Arrange the sliced pears on top of the almond mixture, fanning them out slightly. Place the flan tin on the hot baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 180C/fan 160C/ Gas 4 and bake for a further 20-25 minutes until golden. Cover the tart loosely with foil for the last 15-20 minutes of the cooking time to prevent the top from over-browning.

Switching To Autopilot? I Hope Not! The results of an eye-opening survey landed on my desk the other day. I hope you weren’t one of those questioned and, more importantly, don’t get near anyone who was. The University of Hull have a professor of driving psychology (yes really). His name is John Groeger and he has conducted research into drivers who switch to “autopilot” when behind the wheel. The study of 2,000 responders found that 80% of road users admit to zoning out when driving. This is up from 6 in10 in a similar study conducted in 2009. 25% of drivers admitted to be thinking of other things whilst driving and, here’s the scary thing: 1 in 6 said they couldn’t remember their entire journey!
Unfortunately women came out in the survey as worse drivers, as the results showed they were nearly twice as likely as men to compile mental “to do” lists and thus be distracted. The moral here is whilst the ability to multi-task is good, it does have its place. But on balance perhaps the ladies were just more honest in their answers than the men? Blokes, on the other hand, were far less worried about not concentrating 100% on the road - a sizable 41% said it did not bother them. (That’s really comforting to know.) Professor Groeger states the blinking obvious when he says: “Driving is a complex task that requires our attention.” But he does have a point. Stuff is happening outside the windscreen all the time and if you need to react to it and you’re not 100% “there”, it may be too late. By Iain Betson

Renault Clio dCi 110 Dynamique S Nav By James Baggott
Renault’s Clio has previously been seen as the teenager that refused to grow up. However, with the model celebrating its 25th birthday this year and the French carmaker introducing a host of new styling and design cues, could this be the most mature Clio yet?
We head to Bordeaux to test out the Clio dCi 110 Dynamique S Nav and find out.
What is it?
This is Renault’s facelifted fourth-generation Clio. Originally launched back in 2012, the model has been upgraded both aesthetically and mechanically. The latter comes in the form of a new diesel powertrain – the 1.5-litre dCi 110 diesel, previously seen in Nissan’s Qashqai – and the option of a manual transmission coupled with the pre-existing TCe 120 petrol engine. Renault has poured a lot of resources into the styling of the new Clio, which will lead the way for the rest of its range to be updated. A new grille, re-profiled bumpers and a cleverly designed LED light signature feature on the exterior of the car, while C-shaped daytime running lights can also be specified on certain models. While the cabin may appear disarmingly similar to prefacelift Clios, a closer look reveals that quality has improved significantly, with new upholstery, matt chrome trim and soft-touch materials – no more scratchy plastics to be found here. With the option of 30 different

colour combinations, five roof decals, and four exterior customisation packs, it’s little wonder that the model has been dubbed ‘the most stylish Clio yet’.
What’s under the bonnet?
The pokey dCi 110 diesel powerplant is linked to a sixspeed manual gearbox, which puts 108bhp through its front wheels. Reaching 60mph from a standstill takes 11.19 seconds, while the model tops out at 121mph. The diesel engine produces the typical grunting noise, which is particularly noticeable when the car is at idle or moving slowly, but fades to an indistinct hum at 3,000 revs. The dCi 110 returns an impressive 80.7mpg, while emitting just 90g/km CO2.
What’s the spec like?
Spec on the £17,755 dCi 110 Dynamique S Nav is extensive, with an updated sound and infotainment system with Bose speakers and the new R-link connectivity system featuring as standard. However, the new diesel engine is only available in this toplevel trim, meaning that drivers looking to spend less are left with the option of one of the preexisting powertrains. The basic spec Clio starts from
£10,495, meaning the range includes both affordable and high-end (for the B-segment) options.
Any rivals?
Unfortunately for the Clio, the B-segment isn’t a sparse market. It is packed with affordable rival superminis including the DS3, Citroen C4 Cactus and Ford’s Fiesta. Drivers wanting a more premium experience can opt for the Audi A1, and try as it might, Renault’s updated model proves no match for this German hatch.
What’s it like to drive?
The Clio has been lengthened and widened, which alongside a sportier appearance and increased cabin space, delivers better handling. New polyurethane suspension bump stops and a quicker steering rack give the car improved agility and body control, but not enough to make the drive markedly different to its predecessor.
The 108bhp engine is powerful enough to allow the small car to dart around, and a spread of torque across the revs means it can accelerate with ease in any gear. The stop/start feature, which comes as standard on a number of the Clio grades, is easy to get along with and doesn’t cut out at unfortunate moments - as it does in some of the Clio’s B-segment competitors. A driver-activated Ecomode, which is standard on the Dynamique Nav model and above, can reportedly improve fuel economy by up to 12%.

But with 13 million units sold worldwide since it was launched in 1991, and 12,589 sold in the UK alone between January and June this year, we very much doubt the Clio will be going out of fashion any time soon.
Verdict
Renault claims to have developed the B-segment hatch into something much more versatile and mature than its predecessor. However, with the new diesel powertrain only available in the top-spec model, we can’t help but feel that the carmaker is

Microchipping Your Dog By Ann Haldon New legislation has made it compulsory to have your dog microchipped if it is eight weeks old or over. The government’s aim in introducing the new rules from 6th April 2016 is to relieve the pressure on local authorities and animal welfare charities to care for lost dogs. The legislation also encourages responsible pet ownership, and helps to protect dogs in society generally. Microchipping your dog will make it easier for you to be reunited should they be lost or stolen, as your contact details are placed on an approved database. How does microchipping work? A tiny electronic chip is implanted under your dog’s skin, between the 50

It can be carried out by a vet, in pet retail outlets, re-homing centres, or via charity organisations such as Dogs Trust who carry out the procedure free of charge. What if your dog isn’t microchipped? If you don’t microchip your dog you risk a fine of £500, and even criminal prosecution in some cases. You’ll receive a warning notice giving you 21 days in which to comply. Dog wardens and other enforcers including community support officers have the right to seize your dog and make sure it is microchipped, and to reclaim the cost from you later. It is spring bulb time in all the garden centres now.
Every one up and down the country should be crammed full of bulbs, many at an incredibly reasonable price, and all of which promise to provide glorious masses of colour, sometimes with scent, for many years to come. By all means plant bulbs in beds and borders, but make this the year that you are a touch more adventurous and, if you don’t have any open ground in your garden and do your gardening purely on a terrace, patio or in a back yard, then don’t forget that there are still plenty of bulb planting opportunities to be had! Bulbs have the potential to make any garden look gorgeous but you can use them to add an element of fun as well as glamour, colour and perfume. Bulbs look fantastic if allowed to naturalise beneath trees, but if you’ve no space for trees then miniature bulb varieties look equally good beneath shrubs. Simply choose a suitable selection such as miniature daffodils or crocuses and plant them in a random or scattered effect beneath the shrub, taking care to minimise damage to the shrub’s roots. Keep them

well watered in spring and you should have a fantastic display. On special occasions you may have been sent some flowers and these are often delivered in ornamental plastic-lined woven baskets, which are also available inexpensively from local markets or on the internet. These make perfect planting containers provided they are at least 3” (8 cm) deep. Shallower baskets can be used for smaller bulbs such as crocuses - simply fill them with bulb fibre and then plant up in the same way as you would a bowl of bulbs for an indoor display. To ensure that drainage is definitely not a problem, puncture some holes in the plastic liner and then use any normal multi-purpose or loam based compost mixture. Baskets like this look particularly decorative in the spring, and if you add a couple of ferns or ivies to larger baskets they will look even better. Make use of an outdoor table which is normally left out throughout the year. In spring it is unlikely that you are going to use it for outdoor entertaining, so simply cover it to prevent the surface being spoiled and
arrange a selection of pots full of spring bulbs on it – the effect can be really splendid and will make eating out of doors even more fun and stylish. An old bucket - particularly an enamelled or galvanized one makes a fabulous planter, but remember to drill some holes in the base, or if this isn’t possible, ensure that you place a layer of pebbles or grit at least 2” (5cm) deep in the bottom, so that excess water accumulates below the level of the roots and the bulbs do not rot off. If your garden or back yard is a good size, then make sure that you use some large containers as these look particularly handsome if you can afford the space. Packed full of a single variety of one of the daffodils or tulips or any other spring bulbs, they
will look absolutely gorgeous and make a very striking and bold display. Plant the container up in two layers, so that one lot of bulbs is planted a couple of inches deeper than the other, and you will find that the display is prolonged slightly as the deeper ones will flower somewhat later than those planted closer to the surface If you want something really wacky, why not consider using an old bathroom suite or parts of it to make some very unusual planters? A bath may need a lot of compost to fill it – and don’t forget that good drainage will be necessary - but it can act like a full-sized flowerbed. Even a hand basin, lavatory or perhaps just the cistern can be planted up to great effect. For a truly ornamental look,
put an old watering can or wheelbarrow to good use by turning it into a planter; it’s the sort of thing you pay a fortune for in a garden centre! And then, guess how to make a decrepit pair of wellies or the pair of boots with a hole in them look fun: yes, these too make wonderful bulb containers! The Roaring Twenties – think jazz, flappers, slick automobiles, the talkies and skyscrapers: it was all about glamour, drama and modernity. Consumerism had arrived, and the timing was right for a new style. Also known as Art Moderne, Jazz Moderne or simply Deco, Art Deco style was rooted in the world of pre-First World War leading French design, but only became widely recognised after the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. French designers were combining classical features and rare, luxury materials with exciting new influences such as contemporary art, the exotic Ballets Russes and a fascination with all things Egyptian, as well as the art and artefacts of Japan, Africa, native America, Mexico and the Middle East. Early Art Deco furniture was exclusive and luxurious, made from costly materials such as hardwoods, lacquer, mother of pearl, shark skin, tortoiseshell and leather, and frequently featured extravagant veneering and inlaid decoration. However, as the style spread, designers
employed the latest technologies and less expensive materials, such as stainless steel, chrome and Bakelite plastic. In the States it became known as Streamlining, and its curvy lines were the must-have look for new buildings, with a fine example being the 102-storey Empire State Building, completed in 1931. In terms of furniture, the Art Deco look was low and upright in design, featuring geometric outlines with rounded corners, and often the shell, fan or sunburst shapes that are key to this style. The coffee table and the cocktail cabinet had recently been invented. Fitted kitchens became increasingly widespread, while the Art Deco bathroom featured solid yet elegant shapes and glamorous looks, with plenty of chrome and bevelled-edge mirror. To decorate walls, botanicals or geometrics were frequent motifs, while upmarket homes might have lacquer or wood panelling, mirror tiles or even trompe l’oeil murals. This was the era of parquet flooring, perhaps with the addition of a zebra skin or a boldly abstract rug. High-
end soft furnishings were sumptuous and costly, with silk and velvet desirable. However, as the look filtered down, cotton, chenille and moquette gained in popularity, often featuring graphic patterns in bold colours or monochrome. The arrival of electric light and the widespread use of electric fittings resulted in striking design and the use of ground-breaking materials such as aluminium, plywood, tubular steel, plastic or pressed glass; typical styles included pendant lights made from marbled glass and hung from chains, ziggurat, shell or fan-shaped wall lights, and columnbased table lamps boasting Art Deco motifs. Accessories and ornaments were key, from Clarice Cliff’s ceramics
to Bakelite radios, cocktail shakers and silver dressing table sets. Over time Art Deco design became less sophisticated and more mass-produced and, especially in 1930s Britain, more utilitarian and suburban. Though still ground-breaking, it was commercialised to the point of kitsch. House builders included rounded bay windows, doorways with stepped surrounds and garden gates with sunrise motifs. Brightly coloured zigzags, chevrons, exotic animals and stylised flowers were added to furnishings, accessories and homeware – and thus a luxurious look originally available only to the few became an everyday style found in ordinary homes.

Get Amazing Internet Everywhere Home or abroad, here’s how to get the best connection Speedtest.net internet speed checker For many of us an internet connection is essential - so what can you do if your connection is slow, unreliable or barely usable? The good news is that most internet connection problems are really easy to fix. To identify the problem, it’s important to look in the right place. If you’re connecting to your broadband via a wireless router, that wireless connection could be the culprit. Wi-Fi signals can be obstructed by things such as radiators, metal mesh in the walls, pipework and even furniture, and you’ll often find a poor wireless connection can be fixed by moving the router, or upgrading to a faster one if the existing router is getting old: Wi-Fi technology has improved dramatically in recent years, and a router you buy today will be much faster with much better range than a similarly priced one five years ago. If your home simply isn’t Wi-Fi friendly because it’s huge, or made out of really thick stone - then a Wi-Fi range extender can boost the signal, or you can opt for something called Powerline networking. 76
This uses your house’s electricity circuit to transmit data between plug sockets, which sounds like madness but works really well. Look for Powerline AV if you want to have connections fast enough for streaming high quality video. If the Wi-Fi is fine or you’re connecting directly to broadband with a cable, it’s worth checking out the Speedtest.net website. This tells you exactly how fast your broadband connection is. You’ll never get the “up to” speeds advertised, but if your connection is falling far short so for example if you’re getting around 1Mbps on a line that’s supposed to be good for 12 to 20Mbps - then it’s time to have harsh words with your internet provider. Most broadband connections are ADSL, which uses existing copper wires to bring broadband alongside your phone line. But there’s a newer, faster technology called fibre-optic. That’s what super-fast services such as BT Infinity and Virgin Media offer, and if you’re lucky enough to live in an area where fibre broadband is available it offers a massive increase in speed.
What happens if you can’t get any kind of wired connection? Many areas with ropey broadband get decent mobile phone coverage, and if you’re in a 3G (or even better, 4G) coverage area you can use your phone as a personal hotspot. That turns your phone into a personal Wi-Fi hotspot that you can connect to; it then sends and receives data over the mobile phone network on behalf of your connected device. Beware, though: such usage can quickly rack up lots of data, so if you’re on a limited mobile data deal - which is the most common kind of package - you might find yourself needing a more generous data allowance. Be particularly mindful of data if you’re using your phone as a hotspot abroad. It’s often a better idea to turn off data roaming on your phone and look for public Wi-Fi hotspots instead, because something as simple as checking email and Facebook can easily result in big bills. Some networks offer roaming deals that enable you to use mobile data when you’re abroad for a small daily fee, but if you don’t take advantage of them you’ll soon discover that mobile data can be more expensive than gold, oil or printer ink.

Who Has Written Your Will? A client recently came to see me following the close deaths of her Grandmother and her Grandmother’s husband. The couple had made Wills with a ‘Will Writer’ which, before the change in legislation allowing a transfer of the nil rate band for married couples, ensured their estate was left in trust rather than outright to the survivor. The Wills were supposed to state that my client and her mother would be the beneficiaries of the Trust after the Grandmother died, which was shortly after her husband, but the Will Writer had failed to appreciate that both parties had been married before and each had their own children. Instead of specifically naming the beneficiaries, the Will simply stated the trust was to benefit his ‘spouse and issue’. The husband had already made provision for his own children and clearly intended his money to go to his step-family (they were named as residuary beneficiaries if he died after his wife), but without the crucial detail, everything that was in his sole name could only be left to his biological children and grandchildren.
My client found the details of the Will Writer along with correspondence from the Police advising her Grandparents that that the individual concerned had been imprisoned for five and a half years for theft from deceased clients. It was fortunate that the police were able to seize the Wills that he was holding as there have been instances of companies simply disappearing with all their clients’ documents.

The issue this example highlights is that Will Writers are totally without accountability or requirement to have any training or insurance. There is currently a national debate on the need for such compulsory regulation.
The usual selling point for Will Writers is price. They often sound a lot cheaper, but many add ‘undisclosed fees’ so it ends up costing a lot more. Our policy is to offer a fixed fee service so clients know exactly what they are paying without any risk of being charged more than quoted at the outset.
My client could have applied to the court for the Will to be rectified, but the costs of doing so compared to the money involved made it a pointless exercise. In a time when it is perfectly usual for families to include step children and extended relations, Wills can be complex and require proper expertise. The right questions need to be asked to ensure the person responsible for the drafting a Will understands a client’s background and
