You’ve all seen the advertisements for ½ price kitchens, free appliances and all the extra “Bells and Whistles” some companies offer. Well don’t believe everything you see, as they say… If it’s too good to be true then it probably isn’t true!
HILTINGB And that’s because the installation costs they charge can almost double the price of your kitchen.
HILTINGB FIREWOR We at Ashmore Kitchens, being a small independent family run business, do not make such claims, nor do we charge extortionate prices to install your kitchen. Our small team of designers and installers offer a complete design, supply and installation service at a fraction of the price of other companies.

Since topping the US charts in 1964 with their debut single, the timeless She’s Not There, the English band The Zombies are still giving audiences what they want after five decades, and they bring their current sound to Thornden Hall this November!

Time to go out
The changing of the clocks seems to be the real marker that summer is truly over. It’s not that cold yet, but it’s certainly dark. If I am going to go out during the winter, there are a couple of things that encourage me out of my burrow. Firstly, if there is free parking nearby. No matter what the weather is doing, I won’t have far to go. Secondly I like to be ‘near to the action’ so I want a venue that’s not too big. And thirdly, affordable: I want to go out regularly and that means it has to be fairly low cost.

Closest to home is Thornden Hall (page 60) which has a wonderful array of events including live broadcasts of theatre and ballet from London. It’s a superb, well laid out theatre.

The Chameleon amateur dramatics society runs regular performances at the Ritchie Memorial Hall, the next one being in January (page 60). And The Hilt has occasional film nights.

Further afield is the Hanger Farm Arts Centre in Totton. The Discover team were invited to an event there recently and found it to be a beautiful 18th century converted barn, with a bar area as well as the performance space. For music, The Brook in Portswood features many tribute acts but some original artists too. Easy parking (or not too far if you want to take a cab) and with a capacity of around 600 you’ll be near to the stage wherever you stand.

Gardening
gardening gifts It is not that long until Christmas now, and if you’ve any gardening friends it is so easy to get them a present they’ll really enjoy and find useful.
8
Make sure that you keep the plants at their best by placing them in a suitable position before you give them away.
Any good local garden centre will have plenty of potential gifts in a wide range of prices, sizes and shapes to suit anybody from the complete novice to the most experienced gardener. Alternatively, take a look on the internet and get some gorgeous gardening gifts delivered right to your door.
Outdoor plants are also an ideal choice, but make sure that you know that the plant you are choosing will go to a suitable home. There is no use buying a lime-hating plant such as a Pieris, rhododendron, Camellia or azalea for somebody if they garden on chalk - although a supply of ericaceous compost and a good sized pot could also be a present from someone else if you plan carefully.
Houseplants make brilliant presents, so why not choose a couple of really good-looking ones? At this time of year there are plenty, such as the indoor cyclamens and azaleas or a flamboyant poinsettia or a gorgeous Christmas cactus, which look fantastic whilst in flower - but don’t forget that lots of the foliage houseplants look great, too.
A lovingly created pot of winter flowering bedding plants, perhaps under-planted with a few small bulbs such as crocus or miniature daffodils, will make a lovely instant garden impact present for anyone. Despite the huge quantities of Christmas paraphernalia in garden centres now, any half decent centre will still have a good range of winter
bedding plants and winter interest plants available. Anyone with an interest in growing vegetables would enjoy one of the many gardening books on the subject, or perhaps a ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ Gift Voucher Card, which lets them select the vegetables they’d like to grow from the range I offer at www.pippagreenwood.com. Then, in the spring, we send them garden-ready plants accompanied by weekly advice and tips emails from me. Most gardeners love to encourage birds into the garden, so how about a bird box or feeder or maybe even some bird food? Bird feeding equipment and supplies take up plenty of space in garden centres, so you’ll be spoilt for choice. Gardeners love practical things so a good hoe
like my favourite, the SpeedHoe, will always be welcome, or how about some Micromesh-covered or polythene-covered EasyTunnels, perfect for protecting crops throughout the growing season next year? A raised bed kit is a great gift idea, too, allowing people to grow vegetables when their own soil isn’t ideal. Some kits have the option to add crop covers made from fine mesh (to keep pests out) or polythene (to protect from the worst of the weather and provide off-season warmth). So rather than rushing out and buying something that ‘will do’ as a gift, take a moment and see what you can find which will really bring a smile to someone’s face!

Home Interiors
A Rustic christmas Simple festive decorations can be the most appealing, says interiors expert Katherine Sorrell Who doesn’t love a natural look? Unpretentious and understated, natural Christmas decorations suit every home, large or small, modern or traditional, and make a fabulous, timeless alternative to commercialised glitz and glitter. The ideal centrepiece is a real tree, best bought from a good local stockist. Choose one that’s as fresh as possible, make a new cut at the bottom, and display in a stand (a wicker basket is perfect) that holds a reservoir of water. (Tip: the Nordmann Fir holds its needles really well.) Decorate your tree generously without overloading, and keep to a limited colour scheme (white, red, green and brown are all great), using natural materials (see box). For a touch of sparkle, twine the tree with small, plain white fairy lights. Feeling inspired? Then make decorations with the family. Garlands of popcorn, nuts, gingerbread stars and paper strings of angels or snowflakes are adorable. Instead of shiny baubles, cut simple shapes from felt and blanket-stitch them around the outside, or make a wreath using Intricate star, £8, garden clippings. Similarly, Jenny Walsh Design, you can create wonderful 0868 773293; www. jennywalshdesign.com decorations using sprigs 18

of evergreen, ivy, pine cones (perhaps sprayed with artificial snow), rose hips, dried seed heads and twigs (lashed into a star shape). Or tie dried slices of apple and orange together with gardener’s string and add cinnamon sticks and star anise. If you’re short of time, all these will be in the shops, along with others such as birch bark candle holders, driftwood Christmas trees and needlefelted and knitted owls, reindeer and robins. Wrap presents in brown paper and string, or lengths of fabric and cotton ribbon. Use cardboard luggage labels, and why not embellish the plain paper with potato printing in white – something children might enjoy? For receiving presents, there’s nothing nicer than knitted stockings hanging by the fire, perhaps with some widely available printed hessian sacks for larger gifts. Fresh flowers are fabulous at Christmas – hyacinths, amaryllis and poinsettias are classic and all look particularly special in white. Wrap pots in hessian tied with string or pop groups of them into a wicker basket; you can decorate the tops of the
pots with silver moss. Less is more with this look, so laying the festive table is easy. A linen runner or place mats, plain white china, clear glass and simple decorations such as bowls of pine cones or oranges studded with cloves, and perhaps a vase full of evergreens, twigs and boughs. Cosy, welcoming and unpretentious. Finally, add candles, small and tall, anywhere their flickering glow will make you feel happy. Alternatively, tea lights look pretty inside old jam jars, which is safer if you have young children around. Pop a mince pie in the oven and heat some mulled wine on the hob, and here it is – a very merry Christmas.

Mould, Damp or Salt on the Walls? Almost every homeowner at some time in their lives, experiences damp problems. Mildew, efflorescence (salts on the surface of the wall) and blistering plaster, means it needs treating as soon as possible and the plaster replacing with a “breathable” alternative. BKM Mannesmann UK ltd has a simple but technologically advanced treatment system for rising and penetrative damp. The process protects inside or outside walls of all construction types and materials.
The technology is developed from extensive experience in Germany and is now available in your area. The BKM product microscopically coats all the pores in the material, creating a hydrophobic barrier in all types of brick, stone-work, masonry, cement and lime render. It can be “gravity-fed” or pressure infused into the walls, dependent upon the condition of the wall. BKM also has an external breathable wall protection application, which seals all types of render, salt impregnated brickwork. Lime based paints and render can also be protected under
the 25-year Guarantee. Christian Franceschi, Regional Director for BKM Mannesmann UK ltd, says, “Thanks to this publication, there are many people in Hampshire & Wiltshire who have recently installed our system and are extremely Christian Franceschi, Regional Director satisfied with BKM Mannesmann Uk ltd the results” FOR YOUR FREE survey, contact Christian email: c.franceschi@bkmmannesmann.com or call him on: 01962 940 005 www.bkm-mannesmann.com

NEW HOMES NEAR VALLEY PARK Gladman Developments Ltd have submitted an application to Test Valley Borough Council for 365 homes to be built on land off Flexford Road.
The plans for 365 residential dwellings includes 40% affordable housing, structural planting and landscaping, informal public open space and vehicular access point from Flexford Road. The proposed area would be accessed using a new exit on the roundabout at the top of Knightwood Rd just before the just before the short stretch of road that leads to the railway bridge (heading eastbound). There is a need for affordable housing throughout the country, but members of the public have been lodging objections regarding the lack of plans for the road infrastructure, and have expressed concerns on the impact on local primary schools which are already oversubscribed. Full details of the plans and any objections raised so far can be found on the Test Valley Borough Council website using the reference 16/02112/OUTS. The plans are on the very first document of 72 documents on the site at the time of writing, and are dated 1st September. 22

New Charges for ‘DIY’ waste at Household Waste Recycling Centres Hampshire County Council brought in charges on 1st October for the disposal of ‘DIY’ waste such as soil and rubble, bricks, tiles, plasterboard and asbestos at their Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs).
disappointing that Hampshire County Council are imposing these charges. We are extremely concerned that these charges for household ‘DIY type’ waste, could lead to an increase in fly tipping.”
Soil and rubble, which is usually created from construction, alteration or repair of homes and gardens, will be charged at £2.50 per part or whole 30 litre bag (that is smaller than your 40 litre glass recycling box), or per item.
He added “The charges for a 30 litre bag could easily mean that with just a few other items residents could end up paying around £50 when taking DIY waste to the dump.”
The Council have also implemented a charge for plasterboard and cement-bonded asbestos. Plasterboard, which is accepted at all sites, is charged at £10 per sheet, or £6 per 30 litre bag. Cash and card payment options are available at each centre. Council Leader Keith House said, “It is

Technology
top gadget gifts for christmas There’s a very good chance that this year, Santa’s sack will be stuffed with gadgets: from kid-friendly tablets to expensive iPhones, many people’s presents will be of the digital variety. But you don’t need to spend a fortune to get some great gifts. One of the highlights of the shopping calendar is Black Friday, which is a recent American import: the last Friday in November - this year, that’s the 25th of November - is when shops offer massive discounts to kick-start the Christmas shopping season. It’s grown to encompass Cyber Monday, the Monday immediately afterwards, and some retailers run an entire week of deals in the run-up to Black Friday weekend. In the last few years UK retailers have got in on the act, and Black Friday is a great source of bargains, especially on electronics from online 28
retailers. Just make sure you use a price checking service to ensure that the bargains you see are genuinely good deals. Some retailers mimic supermarket wine deals, with gadgets priced artificially high in October so they can appear to be terrific bargains in November. Buying for technology fans can be tricky because they often go out and buy the gadgets they want as soon as they become available. Thank goodness for accessories, then: a leather case for a smartphone or a messenger bag for a laptop makes a great gift, although watch out for “bonded leather”, which is artificially produced and doesn’t wear like real leather. If your intended recipient has young children, a military-specification protective case will save many trips to the smartphone or tablet repairer.
Headphones are always a good gift, especially now that Apple has dumped the familiar 3.5mm headphone adapter from its latest iPhones, so wireless Bluetooth headphones or headphones that use the Lightning connector will be a big upgrade over the fairly rubbish Apple versions. But this doesn’t only apply to Apple users: most of the headphones that come with phones are dreadful, and in addition to those designed to make music better you can choose from a wide selection of specialist headphones, such as Bose’s QuietComfort noise-cancelling range. We know from experience that noise-cancelling headphones make train, bus and air travel much more relaxing, and while high-end models can cost over £200 it’s quite possible to get noise-cancelling phones from the likes of Sony for less than £20. And don’t forget wireless Bluetooth speakers too: they’re a great add-on for phones, tablets and laptops, none of which tend to have very good sound systems.
It’s usually a good idea to stay away from novelty items - anything hilarious that’s designed to plug into a USB port is surely destined for landfill by Boxing Day - and if you can’t think of anything appropriate, vouchers make an excellent present. Amazon vouchers are great for everyone, iTunes vouchers are fantastic presents for anyone with an iPod, iPad or iPhone, Netflix vouchers are good for TV and film buffs, and there are stacks of vouchers for specific retailers. Keep an eye on the newspaper adverts and voucher websites, though: some shops, especially supermarkets, run multi-buy deals on vouchers such as iTunes vouchers, enabling you to save around 20%. Be careful, though, as if a retailer goes out of business it’s very unlikely that the vouchers will be redeemable, so it’s important to stick with well-known firms. A voucher for Dodgy Dave’s Digital Depot might not be the wisest investment.

PROPERTY NEWS Confusion over ‘Help to Buy’ Breaking news that claims the Government’s ‘Help to Buy Scheme’ is set to close at the end of the year has caused uproar amongst property professionals who fear lack of clarification will have a negative effect on the interest of first time buyers. The Government has confirmed it is ending its Help to Buy mortgage scheme, which helped thousands of people get on the property ladder due to greatly reduced deposits. With a total of 185,000 homes being bought as part of the scheme, Chancellor Phillip Hammond has announced it will close at the end of 2016 after “successfully achieving its purpose”. However, many in the property industry are fearful of headlines in the media claiming ‘Help to Buy’ is now over. ‘It is just the mortgage guarantee initiative that is set to end, not Help to Buy,’ says Paul Sams, the Partner in charge of Hampshire’s largest specialist conveyancing team at law firm Eric Robinson Solicitors. ‘It is separate to the Help to Buy ISA scheme and, more importantly, completely different to the Help to Buy Equity Loan scheme where buyers can have an interest free loan of up to 20% of the value of the property to assist with the purchase of a new home from a property developer.’ Sams, who received calls from clients as soon as the news was published by the media, is urging all those concerned by or interested in Help to Buy to speak to professionals who are fully conversant and can correctly interpret the Government’s scheme so as to avoid confusion. ‘The mortgage guarantee scheme was a great idea in principle, but we found few clients taking up the scheme as the interest rates were so much higher than other mortgages that were available,’ he explains. ‘We have seen a very small percentage of our clients use that mortgage scheme when so many others were better for them.’
‘The rest of the Help to Buy schemes, which we have seen be of much more use to people we have acted for, are set to be in place until 2020 and we will continue to work with clients who can benefit from them.’
Eric Robinson Solicitors Announces ‘28 Day Guarantee’ for Conveyancing Hampshire’s largest conveyancing team has caused a stir with a declaration that displays unrivalled confidence in its efficiency by offering a unique ‘28 Day Guarantee or No Fee’ for its residential conveyancing services. Partner and Head of Conveyancing at Eric Robinson Solicitors, Paul Sams, said ‘Conveyancing does not need to be complicated and we are constantly finding that unnecessary obstacles are being put in the way. We know that we provide all the resources, facilities and staff to ensure property transactions can be completed within such a timescale, so from our side, there is no reason an exchange of contract cannot take place within 28 days of papers being received.’ ‘We wanted to make this clear to our clients by promising that if we are ever responsible for any hold up in proceedings that mean a property transaction takes longer than 28 days, we won’t charge for our work on the case.’ ‘We are vigilant against complacency and acceptance of the status quo, so hope this initiative will contribute to bringing conveyancing up to modern expectations. Our ambition is always to push things forward in line, and sometimes ahead of the conveyancing industry.’
Paul Sams is a Partner and Head of Conveyancing at Eric Robinson Solicitors on Brownhill Road in Chandlers Ford. He can be contacted on 023 8021 4676 or paul.sams@ericrobinson.co.uk For more information or support on any property matter, call 023 8025 4676 or visit www.ericrobinson.co.uk 33

News from Chandlers Ford And Winchester MP Steve Brine I have had a real focus on school places across Chandler’s Ford and Hiltingbury recently, and have spent time working with your County Councillor, Judith Grajewski, to secure the long-term success of schools in our area. We recently met with Hampshire County Council to discuss some of the unique challenges schools across Chandler’s Ford and Hiltingbury face as new development comes online and families relocate from nearby Southampton and Eastleigh.
In short, Chandler’s Ford operates
in a school place planning area that obviously includes schools right here, but also, as many readers will know, nearby at Otterbourne. While there is clear capacity from within catchment to Reception Year, the problems appear to come slightly later.
and junior in Chandler’s Ford requiring by law a new admission round. Again, there are no easy answers but we are both working to stay on top of the situation and plan to engage closely with local heads and HCC to see our issues are not overlooked.
My colleague, Cllr Judith Grajewski, has observed that the other, clearly linked, challenge we face arises because there is a transition between infant
If you want to see more about my work on school places, and in particular how we solved huge problems in Winchester over the last Parliament, you can take a look at www.stevebrine.com/ schoolplaces. Steve Brine MP Winchester & Chandler’s Ford
For example, families may start their children at school elsewhere but as they get older, and crucially as their careers allow, they make the move out of the city and find local schools are full as the system has filled with kids from outside of catchment. To be fair, it’s a really specific issue and really difficult for heads who often find themselves in an impossible position.

And Another Thing...
Tom and the christmas lights
by Tom Hughes
The crisp December air vaporised my breath as I skidded across the drive, shaking the last of the table salt onto the flags as I went. Suddenly I was blinded by a terrible seasonal apparition.
eased myself up into the eaves. The dusty boxes that we’d taken down from the last loft ten years ago sat impassively - inured to the passage of time. After much scratching and cursing (which sadist invented fibreglass?) I managed to locate our box of decorations. Sarah regarded them. “Tom, they are pathetic. If we put those up, Mrs Murphy’s effort will put us to shame.”
Mrs Murphy, my neighbour from over the road, had flicked on her Christmas lights. I staggered back as spots danced before my eyes. The strain on my pupils (not to mention the National Grid) was all too apparent as Mrs Murphy’s much-extended semi-detached hummed into life. Reindeer, gnomes and, bizarrely, a festive ET, blazed out across The Avenue - Yuletide beacons for any passing sleighs or low-flying aircraft.
“This isn’t a competition dear. Don’t worry - Santa comes down all the chimneys, even the poorly decorated ones.”
Tripping into the house I stamped my feet on the bristles. “Disneyland is back on again.” Sarah glanced through the porch door. “Well I think it’s lovely. She goes to so much trouble and it makes me feel so Christmassy. Speaking of decorations - isn’t about time you made your annual pilgrimage?” The loft ladders gave their familiar groan as I 42
“Just for that, you can sort this lot out.” Whereupon the Gordian knot, otherwise known as tangled fairy lights, was handed to me by Sarah. “Well it’s your own fault for stuffing them back in like that last January!” This way and that I wrestled with the blasted cord until finally I managed to straighten them out. Eventually the plastic Christmas tree was wonkily placed in the porch and decorated with baubles, dusty Santas and the lights. More out of hope than expectation, I plugged them in. “Right - ready? By the way, before I switch these on, is it too late to call one of the Spice Girls?” “Tom, stop messing about and flick the switch.” Phiszzz. The lights glowed, then popped, then…
nothing. “Right! That’s it - go and find some decent decorations!” I stared at the rows of glittery kitsch in the temporary pop-up Christmas shop. Which illuminated Santa should I purchase? They all looked equally gaudy. Haplessly, I asked a swarthylooking gentleman sat at the till. He was head down with his eyes glued to a smart phone, so I cleared my throat to attract his attention. “This one, or this one?” I asked. The plastic beaming Santas smiled blindly at the opposite wall. The assistant stared at me blankly then went back to Angry Birds. I bought both. Back home, Sarah grabbed both my Santas, went outside and nailed them violently to the wall. And so the big day, as it always does, came around. The Christmas dinner was almost ready. As the whole brood chatted happily, I strained to listen to Her Majesty the Queen on the telly while Sarah’s famous bread sauce bubbled on the hob. Then out of the window I noticed that Mrs Murphy’s house was in total darkness. Ignoring Sarah’s complaints about ruining my new slippers, I tip-toed across
the road and tapped on the window. Eventually Mrs Murphy appeared. “Are you OK?” I asked hopefully. “No, Mr Hughes, I’m waiting for the emergency electrician but it might be hours yet. My daughter is in London with her boyfriend but...” Mrs Murphy’s tears suddenly began to well up. “Oh Mr Hughes, Christmas isn’t the same since Henry passed away.” “So you’re on your own in this dark cold house?” “I’m going to put my camper stove on to warm up some soup.” “On Christmas Day? Mrs Murphy - grab your coat.” And so, for the first time ever, Mrs Murphy crossed our threshold and sat down with us for Christmas dinner. Outside the elves and Santas were in darkness, but inside our house the warmth of our toast to Mrs Murphy (sat imperiously on her emergency chair) gave her a smile bright enough to illuminate any seasonal table. Merry Christmas Everybody!

Some Christmas Thoughts So, as the old saying goes, “Christmas is upon us and the goose is getting fat” and, to stay in Dickensian vogue, “Bah, Humbug!” I know I’m not alone in finding Christmas hugely stressful and have often wished that it would simply go away. As a Clergyman it is a time of high workload, with many additional pressures. Additionally, because I cannot get away to visit anybody over the season, my large extended family always descends upon the Vicarage to share Christmas with us. Many of these activities are good and enjoyable on their own, but a lot to cope with in one sitting. For so many others, also, Christmas brings its extra stresses. The pressure to spend too much, the accenting of loneliness for some whose lives are prone to isolation, the hyped up expectations that are all-too-often disappointed and the pressure to be endlessly sociable. As a Christian minister I often wonder what kind of a beast we have unleashed upon so much of the world, in this often misguided attempt to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. We do not actually know when Jesus Christ was born and, in its early days, the Christian Church took no interest in that matter either; Jesus’ life, death and Resurrection were so much more important and formed the core of the early teaching about Jesus. The birth narratives in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke (on which the modern Christmas story is based) are clearly later additions to earlier narratives, not originally deemed essential to the record; so why make such a fuss of the matter now? Clearly, the vast majority of humanity at that time (at least in the northern hemisphere) would already be celebrating the festival of the “rebirth” of the sun, after the winter solstice. The Christians merely high-jacked the Roman solstice festival of Saturnalia as a convenient hook to hang Jesus’ “birthday” upon!
So, if party we must, let’s party – but why not give clergy a break and celebrate Jesus at some other time? So much for the logical approach! But history and custom is against such a point of view. Even with the largely secularist agenda of modern Christmases, it is a simple fact that Churches are often full during the Christmas season. Candlelight, the nostalgia for old carols and traditional music, the sentimental experience of the “family” Nativity, or the “Crib” type of service, all continue to be popular and important celebration points for people who otherwise find it hard to engage with the year-round life and worship of the Church. Abandon these traditional celebrations and one risks cutting one of the few ties that keep present generations aware of Jesus Christ and, therefore, open to the possibility of God reaching out to them in a new way in the year to come. So, Christmas is with us, and will stay there for us. An opportunity to engage with the humility of “God becoming a child amongst us”; vulnerable and dependent upon us and upon our willingness to care for and love one so vulnerable. Not a bad vision of where the true power of the Universe lies, in self-giving humility and the service that flows from love. An important lesson for an age so often beset by vanity, hubris and the violent abuses that accompany the worldly vision of power. Here’s wishing you all a blessed, enjoyable and not too busy Christmas. For details of Christmas services, see ctcf.org.uk

Trying to get some Oldies (like me) together to make music I’m a retired bloke who took to playing the saxophone about three years ago. Obviously not a great musician but I enjoy it. I’d like to make music with other amateurs but find that the contact sites on the internet are mainly geared to bright young competent professionals - which I am clearly not! But it seems likely that there may well be fellow souls around who would like to help create some live music - however bad. So if you have a nodding acquaintance with piano, guitar, banjo, violin, brass or whatever and would like to take part, send me an email and I’ll let you know how we can get something together. My notion would be to not ask for peoples’ addresses, phone numbers or even real names until we had some idea of the level of interest.
This is me:
Tenor sax (Alto if pressed).
Read music slowly and badly but just sufficient to make simple arrangements. Have computer(s) and composition software to create and print parts and backings. Equally happy busking “by ear” with folk who think the best use for musical scores is wrapping fish and chips.
Preferences: Old jazz evergreens from the big band era and/or more recent “pops” if they have a good tune. Oldest is Minuet 96 in A minor by Johann Phillip Krieger written in 1697. Interested or have a question ? Ralph Downton ralphdownton@outlook.com

WANTED!
Distributors for this magazine The Discover Chandlers Ford magazine is delivered every month by our reliable team of distributors. Although many distributors stay with us for years, teens grow up and adults grow older, meaning that we do regularly have vacancies in the area. We deliver throughout Chandlers Ford, but also in Otterbourne, Hursley and Boyatt Wood. Flexible work The beauty of this job is that we aren’t asking you to commit to a regular day, nor do we expect you to go out in unsociable hours. All we need is for you to be available once a month (or possibly once every other month) for a few hours, and we give you 5 days to do the delivery. Close to home We try to find a route close to home for you if we can, but if you are an adult we will pay mileage if we ask you to travel more than a mile. Rates of pay It depends on the route as some are easier than others. But for aged 13-16 (who usually get the easier routes) it’s a minimum of £5.50 per hundred magazines. For adults it’s a minimum of £6.75 a hundred, then there’s a bit extra for including leaflets. It should take around 45 to 60 minutes to deliver 100 magazines, but less time in some areas. Hobbies
Ever felt tempted to learn a new skill? Try felting Whether you were learning to sew at school, playing a musical instrument, driving a car or trying on hats, you are almost certainly likely to have used an object made with felt at some time in your life. This surprisingly versatile material is not only perfect for craft purposes but it also has a range of industrial uses, particularly in the automotive industry. Once viewed as a functional and slightly dull material, its image has been transformed by textile artists who revolutionised its use by using felt to make artworks, clothing and fashion accessories. Felt can be made from all types of wool fibre as well as other animal fibres such as alpaca, cashmere and angora. It’s not possible to turn 56
synthetic fibres into felt on their own, but some synthetics can be combined with wool to give more resilience and longevity. Felting is a simple process and once created, the fabric can be used to make a wide range of items, from sculptures and wall hangings to rugs, slippers, cushion covers and even quirky items of jewellery. Wet felting This is a method of creating a flat piece of felt. All you need to get started is some wool fibres, a mat made of thin bamboo strands (like a sushi mat), a bar of soap, a piece of bubble wrap and a length of nylon netting, plus warm water and detergent in a spray bottle. Lay out the bamboo mat and place even layers of fibres along its surface, each layer set at a 90 degree angle from the one underneath. Then cover with nylon netting, spray with a

French Culture La Boulangerie One of the delights of visiting France is trying the many varieties of bread on offer. The iconic “baguette” is the first image that springs to mind and the choice of bread to accompany meals including breakfast (often buttered and dipped into a bowl of coffee). However, there are a multitude of other delicious breads available of varying shapes, sizes, different flour types and with added ingredients such as nuts, olives, bacon and cheese. Although bread is available at most supermarkets, the tradition of purchasing from a local “Boulangerie” (bread shop) is part of the everyday culture in France. Offering a selection of unique artisanal breads, these shops are often family owned and run. Many are combined with a

“Pâtisserie” selling pastries such as croissants and a beautiful selection of wonderfully crafted cakes and sweets. Cakes purchased are often presented in a finely decorated card box.
The daily bake starts at 4:00am and by the time the doors open there is often a queue of people waiting to be served. The local boulangerie will generally be on the main road passing through a village, with several options in the suburbs and cities. Be warned though - as with most other shops and services, boulangeries are generally closed for 2 hours during the lunch period. Armelle Rudman.

What is a Dental Implant? a dental implant is an artificial replacement for a tooth root, usually made from titanium. there are many different implant systems available and when competently used they all deliver a highly reliable form of treatment. the main aim during the placement of any implant is to achieve immediate close contact with the surrounding bone. over time further growth of bone onto the implant surface enhances the stability of the implant. Frequently AskeD questIons Will I be able to eat what I like afterwards? Once completed, patients should be able to eat a normal, healthy diet with little or no difficulty. What Costs are involved in implant treatment? The cost can vary, depending on the degree and extent of treatment required. The full cost is therefore explained and confirmed in a written treatment plan from your implant dentist.
How long will it take? Implant treatment usually requires a number of appointments over a period of months. In some cases, however, implant work can be completed in a much shorter period. How long will it last? Once treatment s completed a regular routine of dental hygiene and regular check-ups should ensure that implants last for many years. Am I too old for implant treatment? There is no upper age limit for patients to undergo implant treatment, provided they continue to enjoy reasonably good health. Is the treatment painful? Patients are often surprised at how little discomfort they experience during and after implant procedures.

Lovely Long Lashes Unless you are fortunate to have long, dark, thick lashes, you are likely to need the help of mascara - a wonder product to emphasise your eyes and inexpensive. But there’s a limit to what mascara can do and it is something that needs daily maintenance. When I first tried the Lash Perfect treatment (see above) it was because I wanted a special look for a trip away. Four months later, I’m still having it done. Apart from looking great, it completely takes away the need to wash mascara off, put it back on, touch up ‘bleed’ (especially at the gym or getting caught in a rain shower). I do give up an hour every couple of weeks to have ‘infills’ (replacing the lashes that have naturally fallen out), but I admit I’m addicted. My lashes look fab - but very natural - and I get up each morning and step out of the shower each day with my ‘mascara’ already done! I love Lorna’s Lashes! Tania Houston, Editor 63

Looking to get some of that summer glow back? Green People’s Self-Tan, £21, is one of the best fake tans on the market. It’s easy to apply, and develops into a natural looking tan within three hours. As an added bonus, it doesn’t have that typical fake tan smell, and it contains rosehip oil to moisturise as it tans. As with any fake tan, you’ll want to leave at least 24 hours between hair removal and application. It’s also a good idea to exfoliate with a good body scrub beforehand. Massage in a light body lotion, and give it time to sink in. Then work some extra moisturiser into your knees, elbows and other ‘knobbly’ bits, to help avoid darker patches. See www.greenpeople. co.uk. If your hair is looking a bit frazzled and fed up with all that styling, try treating it to an Ouai Treatment Masque. It takes just 10 minutes for the treatment to soothe and restore

your weary locks, leaving them smoother and shinier after just one use. A pack of eight sachets will set you back £25, so it’s not cheap, but worth having in your beauty arsenal for big nights out. See www.spacenk.com. I don’t know whether the eyes truly are the windows to the soul, but they’re certainly a tattle tale when it comes to late nights. Try Anatomicals Puffy the Eye Bag Slayer Wake Up Under Eye Patches. Three pairs cost around £6 from Amazon or www.glossybox. co.uk. They feel incredibly soothing, and do seem to reduce swelling in just half an hour. Cover up any remaining dark circles with Dry Eye Concealer, £11.95, from www.skinshop.co.uk. While the coverage isn’t quite as flawless as some concealers, it makes up for
it by helping to moisturise and repair skin. It also goes on smoothly and doesn’t draw attention to fine lines, puffy eyes or dry skin. You can also use the Dry Eye Concealer to calm and cover small patches of eczema and other areas of irritation. Sometimes a spritz of perfume is all you need to perk yourself up before pulling on your heels. Jo Malone are known for their quirky fragrance combinations, and their latest cologne, Basil and Neroli, is no different. It’s got that lovely freshness of neroli, with a herby twist. Playful and warm, the fragrance just seems to improve as the night goes on. Expect plenty of compliments. £43 for 30ml, www.jomalone.co.uk.

It’s been another exciting year at Dovetail Framing, which is celebrating its second birthday. Run by Jonathan Birch from Awbridge, the business has grown from a few local customers in the Romsey area to dozens of clients in an area measuring over ten miles across. Dovetail Framing offers convenience and the ability to make choices with reference to home décor and surroundings. Jonathan visits customers, including professional artists, in their homes, offices or studios, ensuring they choose the perfect presentation. Frames are then hand finished and delivered once completed. Consultations are without obligation, and no extra charge is made for this service. The service has been warmly received, with one customer describing the service as ‘beyond perfect’. Recognition also came in September when Dovetail Framing became a finalist in the Test Valley Business Awards, being highly commended in the ‘Small Business of the Year’ category. Jonathan has also recently been awarded a national scholarship, enabling him to develop specialist skills. Jonathan continues to develop the business, and now provides a weekly framing session on the second floor of Rum’s Eg Gallery in Bell Street in Romsey between 2pm and 4pm on Tuesdays. Customers have access to the usual wide range of samples, and still enjoy free home delivery for completed work. Jonathan remains enthusiastic about the future . “I have enjoyed working with all my customers over the last twelve months and look forward to meeting more in the coming year. Call me on 01794 341274 or visit www.dovetailframing.co.uk and I’ll be delighted to help” 69
Tony Wright talks to
JAMES TW
James TW is a new singer/songwriter, tipped for big things in 2016. His YouTube videos have received millions of views and his debut single is receiving rave reviews. He caught up with Tony Wright to talk about his surprise first break and his upcoming debut album.
How are things going?
Things are going very well. I’ve just come off a long tour with Shawn Mendes and released my E.P. just before that and the reaction was lovely. So your debut single is ‘When You Love Someone’. You wrote this yourself?
I wrote this with a couple of guys actually, in America. The inspiration for the song itself came from a couple of years ago when I used to teach kids instruments to earn a bit of pocket money. There was this one boy who was eleven years old at the time and I found out that his parents were getting divorced before he knew (he didn’t know it was going to happen). I guess the first thing I thought was ‘how are they going to explain it to him in a way that he can understand and in a positive way’ and I wanted there to be a song that he could listen to that would make him feel better about what was going on.
You’re only eighteen. Your voice sounds a lot older but you’ve been doing this a long time. I love the story about when you were ten, how you ended up playing drums for your dad’s band. Is this true?
It was very true. My dad plays lead guitar in a wedding-mid-life-crisis covers band, which is cool, but when I was ten he bought a drum kit because he saw something on the news that it was good for stress – and work had not been that fun (for him). I really took to it – I really enjoyed playing the drums. Then the band had a gig and the drummer couldn’t make the show – and it was either cancel 70
or let the ten year old play. The gig went so well that I became the drummer of the wedding band for about five years.
And a couple of years later you got your first guitar?
I kind of used my dad’s guitar, he taught me a few chords, and then I used youtube to teach myself guitar and piano. When’s the album out?
I am recording a bunch of different songs in different places. You can only release your first album once, and I really want it to be at the right time – and I’m not sure when that is yet. How did you get on with the exams?
OK. One of the songs on the E.P. Is called 10K Hours and it’s about not wanting to stay at school so I can pursue music and put in all the time I want to. What are the plans for the year ahead?
Obviously I’m piecing together my new album and I’m starting to do my own headline shows, having been supporting for so long – and definitely in the next year, I’d like to release my album. There’s work to be done!
Tony Wright plays the greatest love songs of all time on When The Lights Go Down, every evening on The Breeze from 10pm. www.thebreeze.com

Recipe
Pepper and turkey stuffed sweet potatoes
Serves 4
A quick and easy vegetarian dish full of Indian flavour. If you don’t have all Readybasmati in 1 hour the spices just use 1-2 tbsp medium curry paste. Serve with boiled 15 minutes rice or warmed naan breads, if liked.
This is a tasty and healthy post-Christmas day family supper and a great way to use up leftover roast turkey. • 4 medium-sized sweet potatoes, scrubbed • 2tbsp olive oil • 1 red onion, peeled and chopped • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced • 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and sliced • 225g cooked turkey breast, diced • 1 x 230g tub fresh tomato salsa • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 100g Cheddar cheese, grated • Chopped avocado, lime wedges and freshly chopped parsley, to serve 74
1. Preheat the oven to 200C, Fan 180C, Gas Mark 6. Prick the potatoes all over with a fork and place on a baking tray. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until tender.
2. Just before the potatoes are ready, heat half the oil in a frying pan and fry the onion for 6-7 minutes until tender, adding the garlic after 5 minutes. Add the peppers and turkey and fry for a further 2-3 minutes. Stir in 2 tbsp of the tomato salsa and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
3. Halve the baked sweet potatoes and roughly mash up the flesh with a fork. Season lightly and drizzle over half the remaining oil, then pile the turkey and pepper mixture on top of the halves. Scatter over the cheese and drizzle over the rest of the oil. Return to the oven for 10-12 minutes until the cheese has melted. 4. Serve with chopped avocado and lime wedges and sprinkled with freshly chopped parsley. Spoon the rest of the salsa into a small bowl and serve on the side.
TIP
For a vegetarian version replace the turkey with halved chestnut mushrooms or diced aubergine or courgette and use vegetarian Cheddar cheese.

Bon AppÉTIt!
By Cecile
I LOVE WINCHESTER. I do hate parking there, it’s a logistical nightmare … but once I manage to park then I love going there for a fabulous shopping experience, a casual stroll along the river, a look around the imposing Cathedral and best of all … for food and drinks! Which brings me to the best news EVER. The quaint King Alfred pub and rooms at 11 Saxon Road is being fully refurbished and is due to have reopened by the end of October! I simply cannot wait to see the changes that Jayne from the Little Pub Group has in store for her new venue. She has turned many Winchester pubs around, including the now fabulous Green Man at 53 Southgate Street, the fun Mucky Duck at 84 High Street, St James Tavern at 3 Romsey Road and Corner House on Grove Road. Expect quirky, vintage and shabby chic furnishings, a cosy atmosphere, mouth-watering menus, a cool beer selection and fab wine list, friendly staff and The Westgate superb rooms.
Learn about wine, champagne, beer, gin and whisky as well as food & wine pairings in a fun way, with likeminded people, in a relaxed atmosphere 78
The King Alfred Talking about new management, the Westgate pub with rooms at 2 Romsey Road has also been refurbished, but this time by the City Pub Company, which also owns trendy Alfie’s at 157 High Street. I was amazed at the transformation. It is now much bigger than it used to be and so beautifully decorated. I love going there for a pint, so say hi to James from me, as he will help you chose a refreshing beer amongst his great selection of real ales – from local micro-breweries including Itchen Valley, Flowerpots and Winchester-based Red Cat – to drink alongside their new winter menu. Hold on, there is more … James made me swear to secrecy, but he’s in the middle of outsourcing 15 different styles of whiskies and gins … but sssshhhh, you didn’t hear it from me, ok?!
TREAT SOMEONE TO THE ULTIMATE WINE EXPERIENCE! The perfect gift for wine lovers -

winter driving tips It may be mild for the time of year but winter hasn’t started yet. Iain Betson passes on these tips. Car Maintenance Is the car safe to drive? Keeping it well maintained is doubly important in winter. Worn tyres won’t hold the road in wet conditions as well as those with a good, deep tread. Make sure all exterior lights are working correctly and that wiper blades are in good condition. Check the oil, coolant and washer fluid levels.
In The Wet Driving in heavy rain is difficult and can be treacherous, so take precautions. Slow down: the wetter the roads, the longer your braking distance, and the heavier the rain, the worse your visibility. Driving cautiously and leaving a good distance between you and the vehicle in front is the safest thing to do.
In Snow And Ice The same advice applies if you are driving through snow or ice. Slow down and leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front. Use your headlights if necessary. Brake and accelerate gently. It’s not always easy to tell if you’re driving on ice, but a good rule of thumb is that if your tyres are making less noise than usual, you may well be. If you do skid, don’t brake – you’ll lock the wheels and lose control. Instead, depress the clutch and steer into the direction of the skid. When the car straightens, steer as normal. Emergency Stopping You may have more need for a well-executed emergency stop in winter’s slippery conditions, so remember the rules. Apply the brake, without locking the wheels. If the vehicle starts to skid, ease pressure from the pedal and then reapply. Depress the clutch just before you stop. Safe winter motoring!

GOLF GTI CLUBSPORT S WHAT IS IT? It’s the fastest front-wheel-drive car around the Nürburgring, a stripped-out hardcore celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Golf GTI and a limited edition collector’s piece all in one.
The Golf GTI Clubsport S is the result of asking engineers to do what they can to cement the GTI’s name in the hot hatch pantheon. WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET? Lifting the Golf ’s bonnet will reveal the same twolitre, turbocharged petrol you’ll find elsewhere in the Golf range – notably the Golf GTI and Golf R. In this application it’s been tuned up slightly, producing 306hp – broadly similar to the Golf R’s output but with a different exhaust system freeing up a couple of horsepower. That’s paired with the six-speed manual gearbox for weight purposes, as the extra few kilos of the dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) would work against the weight-saving nature of the Clubsport S.
WHAT’S THE SPEC LIKE? The GTI Clubsport S is a top-specification Golf and it comes with the appropriate bells and whistles. The infotainment system is Volkswagen’s Discover Navigation with a 6.5-inch colour screen - but you
84
By James Baggott
can upgrade to the Discover Pro for £1,325, which adds a larger screen and DAB radio. You’re missing one or two things – not least of which are the rear seats, replaced with a faux strut brace and cargo net. Cruise control is absent, unusually, leading to an oddly sparse suede steering wheel. WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE? It drives exactly as you’d expect the car that set the fastest front-wheel-drive lap of the Nürburgring ever to drive. It’s really very savage in a straight line, barking through the exhausts with every upshift, and scrubs off speed no less impressively. The sticky Michelin Pilot Cup tyres offer huge amounts of grip, too.
On the mixed and drying roads we used, the Clubsport S exhibited a little torque steer if you gave the car some stick, but far less than you might expect. Otherwise, it’s a very neutral car to drive on the road.
WHAT DOES THE PRESS THINK? AutoExpress reckons that the Clubsport S has ‘even more involvement and surprising refinement’, while Autocar thinks that it’s ‘by a nose, the very best fast Golf you can buy’.
WHAT DO WE THINK? It seems odd to turn a car with such broad credentials into a two-seater sports car, especially as the rear compartment trim is still present, but you can’t really ignore the way it drives. The Golf R might be a safer bet for all-weather performance, but the Clubsport S makes a great case for itself on dry roads and doesn’t feel as wrung out as other front-wheel-drive offerings of similar power outputs. Losing the rear seats makes the Clubsport S a bit of a tough sell when silhouette rivals retain the family usability and two-seat competitors are commonly less expensive, but as all of the UK’s allocation of 150 have already been sold, it’s almost a moot point. TARGET BUYERS The performance car enthusiast who loves the Golf but wants a sports car. THE RIVALS Honda Civic Type R, Porsche Cayman, Ford Focus RS KEY SELLING POINTS 1. Limited edition cachet 2. Unflappable cornering manners 3. Usable real-world performance DEAL CLINCHER It’s no harder to live with than any other Volkswagen Golf

The Hiltonbury Jerseys By Chandlers Ford resident, Andy Vining In 1947, my father John Vining started the Hiltonbury Herd of pedigree Jersey cows. Although we initially had some Guernseys and Shorthorn cattle, these were phased out over the next few years and we had a full Jersey herd by around the late 1950s. When I left school in 1959 I joined my father on the farm. Our milk at that time was collected every morning by milk lorry which would arrive around 8am and the 10 gallon churns would be loaded onto the lorry by hand.
In the 1960s we decided to create a milk round in Chandler’s Ford delivering direct from Hiltonbury Farm and delivering ‘Raw Jersey Milk’ to a growing population. This decision to diversify into retail was a big step as the household milk in those days was delivered locally by South Coast Dairies. Virtually everyone had milk delivered in bottles (who remembers gold top and silver top?)
We were not set up to handle glass bottles and all the sterilising that would entail, so we decided to deliver the milk in cartons, a method far ahead of our time. We purchased a box of cartons labelled Hiltonbury Farm Fresh Milk and then sealed them with a metal clip by hand. This was very time consuming and laborious, but we did not want to spend on automatic equipment until we were assured that the Chandler’s Ford public were willing to embrace the idea. 90
Farm Gate Office
So off I went canvassing. Door knocking up and down Hursley Road, then onto the new Hiltingbury estate; the response was amazing! I would get the orders and next day would have to milk the cows, carton the milk direct from the cooler, load my Ford Van and head out to do the deliveries.
Not long after we started we invested in a new carton filler machine that enabled me to fill three cartons at a time and this machine then heat sealed the wax tops saving a great deal of time and effort.
One of the main resistances from the residents was (surprisingly) not the fact the milk was unpasteurised but that it was in waxed cardboard cartons. People were so used to having milk delivered in bottles they were very wary to start with. But they soon discovered how useful the cartons were to recycle as flower pots and also they made brilliant firelighters!
The round grew and we started to offer other farm produce, the main one being beautiful fresh double cream. We also sold eggs and chickens to order, potatoes in 14lb bags and our renowned Christmas turkeys. We had a specialist milk van build and signwritten that had a separate back cold compartment, all very modern. The challenges of the winter of 1963 (the coldest winter for 200 years) meant I had to deliver milk with the tractor and trailer, but our sales rocketed as the milk floats of our rivals had great difficulty getting around. Around this time my sister Heather had left school and in 1964/65 she joined me on the milk
round and did the cream making and putting the milk into cartons to help share the workload. Heather went on to Sparsholt Farm Institute then returned to Hiltonbury in 1975 to take the herd over, as I left to pursue another career connected to farming. The milk round business continued for some years but was eventually sold to our biggest rivals.
In 1976 Hiltonbury Farm was taken for development and the Jersey herd was moved to Velmore Farm (opposite Asda). This continued to be run by my sister Heather who did an amazing job building the herd to Championship status, until she retired in 2001. On retiring some of the herd was sold but the main bloodline was continued at Longdown Farm by her son Oliver Neagle. Oliver was given the opportunity to move to Uplands Farm, Botley and since then has done an amazing job, building the Hiltonbury Herd to a total of 400 animals including all the cattle, heifers and young stock. Right up to date into 2016 and things have gone full circle because Oliver has just started selling his Jersey raw milk direct from the farm and he is
Heather Vining with her herd of 135 pedigree Jerseys on the way to the milking parlour
planning to install a vending machine for milk and fresh eggs at the farm.
I take a trip over there once or twice a week and bring back some of the golden food with one-third fresh cream on the top. I’m really proud of Oliver and his partner Julie and their wonderful herd of Hiltonbury Jerseys. The Hiltonbury Jerseys can be seen at Uplands Farm, Botley SO30 2AA, and their fresh milk can be purchased direct from the farm. The farm also has a facebook page – just search for Hiltonbury Jerseys.

Why does your cat spray? Cats that have been neutered tend to spray when they want to mark their territory, but it can also happen if they are anxious. Spraying inside their own home, or excessively outdoors, often means they are trying to repel other cats, or that they don’t feel secure within their own territory. Your cat might suddenly start spraying if:
• Another local cat comes in through their cat flap, or appears at the windows or patio doors. • You buy new furniture, as the old furniture would have carried their scent. • A new baby arrives, or another pet. • You redecorate your home. • They are suffering a urinary tract infection.

What to do if your cat is spraying in the house
It’s important not to be angry with your cat, as this will increase its anxiety levels and make the problem worse. If another cat has been in the house, you could lock the cat flap for a while to make your pet feel more secure. Otherwise, make sure they have plenty of quiet, safe places to escape to if there are children in the house. A warm airing cupboard is often a safe bet, or a quiet upstairs room. Bear in mind that a medical condition such as cystitis could also be causing your cat to spray, so a trip to the vet would be worthwhile if the problem continues. By Ann Haldon

“I was hardly able to walk due to severe pain in my back and my cholesterol was very high. I never expected to lose the amount of weight I did over such a short space of time. The staff were all amazing and supportive, the programme easy to follow, the food enjoyable and the results speak for themselves. I would whole heartedly recommend Alevere to anyone who wants to safely lose weight and improve their health and lifestyle.” Teresa
