LIVE LONG AND PROSPER I don’t believe everything I read in the newspapers, unless it suits me of course. My favourites are a glass of wine a day protects the heart, beer is good for the brain, and The Daily Telegraph recently listed 10 reasons why chocolate is good for you. Add in other recommendations such as taking regular exercise, five portions of fruit and vegetables a day and maintaining a positive attitude, and I reckon if I follow all this advice I should make it to 100. Which I need to really as now it’s been announced that England’s chief medical officer has called on baby boomers, those aged 50 and 70, to keep working to stay healthy. So now working is good for you, too. I’m a bit sceptical about all this. I have to say that alcohol these days doesn’t really agree with me and chocolate goes straight to my waist. I’m optimistic, but I’m British – am I honestly expected to give up moaning about the weather? And I do exercise, but everyone I knows who does (including me) seems to be constantly moaning about injuries and aching muscles. As for working till I’m 70…I think I’ll have to so I can afford wine, chocolate, healthy food and a gym membership. I am complimented all the time on my hair, which makes me feel younger, which means I’ll live longer, right? Not sure there’s any science which backs that up, but my hairdresser feels worth more to me than a personal trainer! So credit where it’s due, here’s a shout out for Rosina at Hair at Home. See “Hair at Home Southampton” on Facebook for reviews or book an appointment on 07517 484710. Yes, you are worth it.

BON APPÉTIT!
By Cecile
As a French sommelier, Marcel Proust’s “In Search of Lost Time”, has haunted me ever since I moved to England 23 years ago. At the heart of the book is the theme of involuntary memory, in which an experience such as a smell or a taste unexpectedly unlocks a past recollection. Every time I pass in front of a bakery, my heart stops and calls to mind my childhood in France. The taste of buttered croissants at breakfast, the feel of those crumbs on my lips, the smell of the rich, hot cocoa I religiously drank after school, the inviting glance at a pain au chocolat waiting on my plate, or the noise that fresh, crunchy baguettes made at dinner time. I will never forget.
Fabrice and Tanya Berthonneau and their typically French restaurant and café bar, ‘La Parisienne’ on Bell Street in Romsey SO51 8GY. I’m always lost for words and a little tearful when I savour a soupe à l’oignon or a roasted breast of duck there. The ambiance and the flavours bring me back to another time. Thank you to Luc for recently opening up the finest of cheese, cold meats and wine delicatessens on Latimer Street in Romsey SO51 8DF, adeptly named ‘Luc, Purveyor of Fine Foods’. A “fine épicerie” where fresh produce and great wine bottles await patiently to be picked up and satisfy your palate.
This is why I now need to thank a few of my compatriots, dotted around Hampshire, for providing me with the very best food experiences around, for making me salivate and remember once again that life is good. Thank you to Gilles Coupeau, the most talented of bakers for his fresh breads and incredible gâteaux. His ‘Boulangerie de Victor Hugo’ on the High Street in Southampton SO14 2NS is an Aladdin’s cave, full of mouth-watering pâtisseries and glorious home-made food.
Learn about wine, champagne, beer, gin and whisky as well as food & wine pairings in a fun way, with likeminded people, in a relaxed atmosphere 8
I hope that these much-loved addresses of mine, will provide you with the same joyful experiences that a morsel of cake did for Proust. But for me, smells are perhaps even more evocative than tastes because – as any wine-buff will tell you – our noses are much more discriminating than our tongues. By Cecile

Super-Size America Doesn’t Extend To LA Auto Show James Baggott takes a look behind the scenes of America’s motor show in the Sunshine State For a land known for its love of excess, the LA motor show is a relatively bijou affair. Small, compact and easy to get around, it’s the polar opposite of the city that hosts it.
It makes little sense launching cars in a metropolis that’s smothered in a layer of smog, crammed with traffic and needs more cars like the ozone layer needs a bigger hole in it, but America being America does it anyway. Unlike the vast, monolithic motoring expos of Frankfurt and Paris, LA does things in bite-sized chunks (unlike its burgers). The stands are more compact, the press corps less stressed and fewer in numbers, and the new car launches less frequent. But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t big news out there in the States – some manufacturers, especially those with a presence on this side of 12
the pond, or with aspirations to have one, take the event pretty seriously.
Alfa Romeo is one such ambitious car maker. The Italian firm showcased its new Stelvio SUV with a launch in a tent outside the main halls. It was so packed, the overzealous American fire regulations meant most journalists couldn’t even get in. Fortunately, this rival to the Porsche Macan and Jaguar F-Pace was quickly moved to the Alfa stand where we got a proper look. Rumours suggest it will arrive in the UK late in 2017 with a diesel engine first, with a bi-turbo 2.9-litre V6 packing 503bhp following soon after. The spicy version will have four-wheel drive, the diesel making do with power via the rear wheels. Some Italian flair in a sector not known for it will be most welcome. Elsewhere, the Germans gave the clearest signs yet that another recession was imminent with the unveiling of the why-do-we-need-it MercedesMaybach S650 Cabriolet. Just 300 of the 621bhp
monsters will be produced and, although pricing is yet to be released, don’t expect much change from £200,000. Mazda used the eve of the first press day to take the wraps off its new CX-5. At an event peppered with nonsense car design gobbledygook, and interspersed with pictures of cheetahs and chopsticks that were being used to demonstrate Mazda’s new design direction, the manufacturer showed off a rather smart looking SUV. It’s the best-selling model in Europe for the firm and its new nose, which has more than a hint of Jaguar F-Pace about it, points to the future look for all Mazdas. It also comes in a new red, which is redder than the last red. Understood? Good.
Jaguar was another manufacturer that had decided to grab some early motoring show headlines, revealing its futuristic electric I-Pace to the world in its own unique style two full days before the event opened. Using virtual reality headsets it simultaneously launched the car in LA and London, with car designer Ian Callum showing off the firm’s first foray into electric vehicles (EVs). LA was an apt showcase for a model that will sell
50 per cent of its volume in the States, and with a range of 310 miles on a single charge chances are those buyers will be queuing up to get hold of one when it goes into production next year. Finally a Tesla rival from Britain? We hope so.
Other notable launches included a world premiere for the largest of all Minis, the Countryman, and the new Volkswagen e-Golf with a range of 186 miles on a charge - up 50 per cent on its predecessor.
However, it was the real Americana that caught our eye in the subterranean halls under the main event. Dubbed ‘the garage’, they contained a host of modified motors that were a welcome relief from the corporate frontage of the manufacturer stands upstairs. Modified Ferraris, Gulf-liveried Fords and bigwheeled classics were among the delights hidden away below the show’s huge halls. Just like the city then, proving if you scratch beneath the surface a little you’ll find the By James Baggott real treats.

Just What Does It Take for Us to Realise?
Recently, a lorry driver was convicted of causing the deaths of three children and an adult due to his use of a mobile phone when driving. After the verdict, the police issued a video of the parents urging drivers to stop using their phones whilst driving. It makes harrowing viewing, particularly the images of the impact and the crushed cars. I am sure we’ve all seen bunches of flowers or even cemetery-style ornate planters placed on the roadside. Whatever form they take, each has been left there by someone to mark the site of a loved one’s accident and, most probably, death on the road. Irrespective of our opinion of them, they serve as a warning that we should take extra care.
But still the accidents happen: on the same roads and usually by us breaking the same driving laws. I wonder what it will take to get into our thick heads the destructive power involved in traffic accidents and their impact on the human body. For us to slow down, to stop drinking and to stop texting. Not long ago I rounded a slight bend on a road I know well to see an engine on the left verge and the twisted remains of the car it was from on the right. The accident had been dealt with, but what I saw left me thinking “Someone must have died there”. Perhaps that mangled wreckage should be left there as a sharp reminder of what happens when you fail to heed the rules of the road. If it saves just one life it would have served its purpose.

COMMUNITY GRANT ON THE TABLES Ampfield Village Hall can now host more activities thanks to a community grant from Councillor Martin Hatley. The trustees applied for the grant after noticing a vast increase in demand for the hall, particularly since the building was extended and re-designed last year. The £546.66 grant will mean that the trustees can purchase additional chairs and tables for the hall’s meeting room, which currently hosts activities such as the weekly community café where local people can access help and support with IT.
Councillor Hatley said: “I’m pleased to present this cheque to the village hall committee. The hall is a fantastic focal point for the Ampfield community and it is home to many clubs and activities, including the monthly indoor market, craft classes, bridge club and yoga, and it is the meeting place for the Ampfield Brownies and the venue for parties for all occasions. The additional chairs and tables will mean that the venue can host even more activities for local people to enjoy.”

Southampton is Rock’n’Rolling Live music is a significant part of the UK’s social scene with events taking place almost every day of the year. But all the press focus seems to go on Adele and Coldplay selling out tickets, all the events taking place in London, and ticket touts ripping everybody off. They are big acts for sure, but actually just a tiny part of today’s music scene. There is so much enjoyment to be had out of a local concert without the travelling and with much more affordable – and obtainable - tickets. Southampton is well served with smaller venues and from the 23rd to the 29th January many are taking part in ‘Independent Venue Week’ (IVW). The project, which is staged nationally will see venues from across the country hosting special shows throughout the week. The Brook in Southampton is one of Discover’s favourite venues joining IVW this year. The team there have lined up three fantastic, local emerging bands for one of the nights during that week (see below) and already have Los Pacaminos and Martyn Joseph (both original) booked in so are billing them as part of the event. Remember that nearly all the global successes you know of today started in small venues. Ed Sheeran appeared at the Joiners Arms in Southampton (capacity 200!) just before he went on to become internationally famous. And travelling 30 minutes to a venue and often paying under £10 for a ticket is a definite incentive to keep it local. Southampton Venues taking part in Independent Venue Week: The Brook Accessible 600-capacity venue hosting national touring and tribute bands. 26th January at The Brook • The Dead Freights: Four piece rock’n’roll band from Southampton with melodic vocal harmonies, bluesy guitars and driving shuffles.
• Elixir: Inspired by the likes of Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and the like, this is a big classic rock sound with a clean modern twist. • Shy Boy: Shy Boy are another local four-piece band, inspired by artists such as The Beatles and The Libertines. Shy Boy complement the songs with excellent vocal harmonies and bags of energy. Is if that isn’t already sounding great, tickets for the night are £6 each with no booking fee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Time Travel Without The Tardis By Kate McLelland Doctor Who would be proud. Visit any historic house or heritage site in Britain these days and you may well feel as if you’ve stepped back in time. Bustling amongst the rows of canvas tents, piled-up artefacts and military equipment you’ll find an array of costumed characters, variously forging iron, weaving, cooking nettle stews, flying falcons and practising swordsmanship. You may even see an ancient battle, taking place before your very eyes.

Heritage and the National Trust are turning more and more to re-enactment groups to give their visitors a real taste of what life was like in the olden days. Whether your interest lies in prehistoric or Roman history, the Vikings, Tudors, English Civil War or World War II, you can be sure there will a group somewhere, dedicated to bringing that period to life in painstaking detail.
Relax. You haven’t just swapped the family car for a time-travelling police box: it’s simply a group of historical re-enactors, creating their own special brand of living history to entertain and educate the crowds.
There’s a strong social aspect to these reenactment events and you’ll often find whole families taking part. Re-enactment is a great leveller, attracting participants from all walks of life – doctors, dustmen, teachers, office workers and manual labourers. Although the majority of re-enactors are men, women are generally welcome to take on traditional female roles where appropriate. Occasionally - providing the society is willing to relax its rules on historical authenticity - they are even allowed to ‘fight’ as soldiers.
Nowadays organisations such as English
Our present day fascination with re-enactment
began, as many trends and fashions do, in America. Commemorations of the American Civil War have become increasingly popular in the US, and are often conducted on an epic scale. For example, in 1998 up to 25,000 participants were recorded taking part in a restaging of the Battle of Gettysburg. Britain’s answer to America’s Civil War reenactments was The Sealed Knot. This famous group, first formed in 1968, was assembled to stage battles from the English Civil War and it continues to this day. The success of Sealed Knot led to the formation of a number of different groups and today there are many small, regional groups as well as the large, national societies you may see at major events. In recent years the standard of presentation of many societies has improved, particularly under the guidance of organisations such as English Heritage, which has encouraged groups to improve the authenticity of their costumes and equipment. Societies also have
more opportunity to travel abroad to take part in commemorations of major American and European battles and many top re-enactment groups are used by TV and film companies. So how can you get involved? The best way to track down a society near you is to visit Historic UK’s website, which provides information about Britain’s heritage sites and houses. Historic UK’s directory www.historicuk.com/LivingHistory/ ReenactorsDirectory/ (telephone 0845 643 5760) provides an at-a-glance list of reenactment groups, the historical periods they cover and their locations. If you are interested in history and keen to meet up with other enthusiasts, then reenactment is definitely for you. There’s no other hobby on earth where you can spend all day in another century and still get home in time for tea. Eat your heart out, Dr Who! Chandler’s Ford and Hiltingbury Dementia Action Group

Technology
New year, New tech, New you, The gadgets that can help you reach your New Year goals It’s that time of year again: gym owners rub their hands together in glee as the entire world makes New Year resolutions to sort out their health, their fitness or their looks. But while many of those gym memberships will turn out to be expensive mistakes as the initial fervour fades, a few well-chosen gadgets could keep you on the right track all year round. Health and fitness tracking is huge in technology right now, largely because it’s still a relatively untapped market: even the best-known fitnesstracking smartwatch, the Apple Watch, has only sold a few million units. That means there are plenty of firms hoping to win over everyone from casual dieters to mountain explorers. For the latter category, outdoor watches such as the Casio Smart Outdoor Watch are built to military specifications for toughness and deliver accurate GPS, as well as recording your hikes and climbs. If that sounds like overkill, and for most of us it probably is, the £170 Garmin Vivosmart HR+ is one of the best all-round fitness trackers for monitoring your heart rate, recording your activity and tracking GPS. It’s pretty, too - and the Misfit Ray is prettier still, resembling a bracelet rather than a watch. It’s half the price of the Garmin and offers good all-round fitness-tracking features. Over 2017 we’ll see a lot more wearable trackers, many of them odd: fancy a Welt, a sensor-enabled belt that tracks your steps for as long as you keep your trousers on? 30
If you’re more concerned about what you’re putting into your body than what you’re sweating out, smartphone apps offer all kinds of diet and lifestyle tracking - and increasingly those apps tie in with platforms such as Apple Health, WiThings’ HealthMate, Microsoft Health, Jawbone UP and many more. Platforms are designed to enable data sharing from multiple trackers, so for example Apple’s Health app can get data not just from the iPhone it’s on but also from the Apple Watch, from wireless scales and from a wide range of wired and wireless health-monitoring devices. If you haven’t already committed to a particular health-tracking platform, it’s a very good idea to check out sites such as Wareable.com to find out the latest news and rumours about the different manufacturers. For example, at the time of writing Microsoft has announced the end of its Microsoft Band tracking device, so if you buy one now you might not be able to get a repair for it or a replacement one if it breaks. It also means that if you want to upgrade from a Band 2, there won’t be a Band 3 to fulfil your wishes. Gadgets don’t just help you when you’re exercising or watching what you eat. They can help you when you’re asleep too. Many wearable devices such as the Fitbit Blaze and Surge, Fossil Marshal, Pebble Time and Apple Watch (via third-party apps) can monitor your sleep, gathering data to help you identify the triggers of a poor night’s sleep and the best times to set the alarm for, and the best times to head up the wooden hill to Bedfordshire. The data recorded does vary from device to device and some are more practical than others - wearing a smartwatch in bed all night means you’ll have to charge it in the morning - but the insights can be useful.

French Winter Festivities With winter now well underway it is an opportune moment to comment on some of the traditions followed in France at this time of the year. Of course the most notable in December is Christmas itself (Noel) which is often celebrated on the evening of the 24th December . The giving and receiving of presents however varies; in the north east of the country children’s gifts are traditionally given on the 6th December (the feast of St Nicolas) although many families now exchange presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. The Christmas meal, usually served on Christmas Eve, is known as “le Réveillon” and the food served can be quite varied according to the region. Popular dishes include roast turkey, goose or duck as well as seafood such as oysters and lobster. A cheese dish usually follows and the traditional “bûche de Noel” - a sponge cake log covered in chocolate or coffee butter cream (textured to resemble bark and elaborately decorated with sugar leaves and meringue mushrooms) is usually served for dessert.
France is when we celebrate the Epiphany by baking the traditional Galette des Rois cake. This is celebrated on the first Sunday after the 1st January to honour the three Kings (les Rois mages). This celebration is a popular dessert with families. Two small figurines are hidden in the cake and whoever discovers them becomes “the King and Queen” for the day! . Armelle Rudman.

Van Cleef & Arpels So First
Beauty Resolutions
A new year is the perfect time to make a few changes to your beauty routine… It seems you can barely pick up a magazine without reading about another new skincare ‘miracle worker’, from skin softeners and beauty essences, to micellar water. Most of these are ‘nice to haves’ rather than essentials. If you are looking to up your skin care regime though, I’d recommend adding a serum. They’re more concentrated than a moisturiser, and designed to target specific concerns, from fine lines to blemishes. French brand Ekia’s Sérum Fermeté – Highly Active Firming Serum, is designed to tighten and lift skin. The ‘magic ingredient’, a tree extract called dragon’s blood sap, is said to help firm skin, smooth fine lines, increase moisture and aid skin renewal. My skin certainly felt tighter and more hydrated 38
after using the serum. £48.99 from www. hollandandbarrett.com. It’s easy to get stuck in a perfume rut. Rather than play it safe with your favourite scent, why not head to a local perfume shop and try a few new ones? Ideally, spritz a perfume on a card first. If you like the scent immediately, and still do after half an hour, then try it directly on your skin. Fragrance is designed to change over time, so don’t just spray, sniff and buy. Give it time to show you what it’s made of. Van Cleef & Arpels So First (from £32) is a nice one to try. Light, fresh and feminine, it’s bursting with floral notes, such as freesia and frangipani, with a warm base of vanilla and sandalwood. Many of us are guilty of splashing out on top of the range hair straighteners and styling products, then throwing whatever shampoo and conditioner is on offer in our basket. My top hair care recommendation is to go for a gentler, decent shampoo and conditioner. Personally, I avoid any that contain sodium lauryl sulphate, as I find it leaves my hair dry and brittle.

JASÖN do some great haircare products, priced from around £6.50 for a half-litre bottle that will last for ages. If you’re looking to treat yourself however, I can recommend Saach Organics Hair Strengthening Shampoo and Nourishment Conditioner. They’re packed with nourishing natural ingredients, such as almond oil, coconut milk and hibiscus, and leave my highlighted hair feeling soft and healthy. Prices start from £9.95 at www.saachorganics.com.
Makeup bags and brushes can be a bit of a breeding ground for bacteria, and that can lead to spots and skin irritation. So if you haven’t given them a wash for a while, now’s the time. Clean brushes with a gentle hand wash or baby shampoo, pat them dry and then leave to air dry. Alternatively, if they’re looking a bit worse for wear, treat yourself to some new ones. The Nanshy range is a good choice. They’re made with premium synthetic fibres (so cruelty-free), assembled by hand and rigorously tested. They’re also lovely and soft and great for blending. Nanshy brushes start from £5.95 at www.myshowcase.com.

Mark Franklin talks to
THE SHIRES
The Shires are Ben Earle and Crissie Rhodes. The Breeze’s Mark Franklin caught up with them to talk country music, influences and the surprising way they got together in the first place.
I’ve got to start off by congratulating you on two number one country albums – ‘My Universe’ being your most recent CD. Ben: Apparently this was the fastest selling country album of all time. It’s kind of a bit weird saying that because four years ago we hadn’t really met each other and here we are now with two albums under our belt – and doing this tour and seeing so many people singing along to every single song is just incredible. We’re having a great time.
When someone says to you, you’ve got the fastest selling country album of all time, how do you feel?
Crissie: It’s pretty amazing. It’s also crazy to think that we can use the word ‘country’ nowadays as it was kind of a dirty word for a long time. People if you mentioned it would be “oh, stetsons, rhinestones and cowboys” and it’s just not that any more. It’s so much more about what’s going on today. And in terms of heritage country artists, who do you look back on and think… genius. Crissie: Dolly (Parton). Dolly performing Glastonbury a few years ago was a really big turning point I think.
Because you used to sing her songs in pubs?
Crissie: I did! I was always singing her, Shania Twain and LeAnn Rimes. They were the kind of leading ladies for me in country music. So in terms of the makeup of The Shires, it’s because you’re from two shires – Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, right? 44
Ben: Now just Bedfordshire because I moved! When we got together we said that we want to retain our Britishness and that’s where the name came from. And when we go out to the States, they love the fact that we’ve from the UK and that we are really proud of that. We wrote a song called ‘Made In England’ which just celebrates all the things we love about being British. It didn’t sound very good singing “made in Britain” so we changed it to ‘England’. We get a lot of stick for it in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland when we sing it! Both of you guys have had experience with the X Factor. Are you really glad that nothing really happened there because of where you are right now.
Crissie: Yeah it’s funny because if we didn’t go on that show, neither one of us would have met each other. It’s an entertainment show, it’s brilliant to watch, but it is hard work. We’re very grateful that we found each other and we get to do everything we want to do. So you’re two albums down now. Is it too early to be thinking about a third album?
Ben: No – you have to! Already started writing for it! Fans just want it straight away! <laughs>

Life Begins
Do You Let Your Age Do The Talking? The invitation arrived via social media: “A group of us are going to Glastonbury Festival for the day. Do you fancy coming along, too?” I’d loved going to Glastonbury when I was young - the mud, the dodgy burgers from a van, the opportunity to bond with thousands of other young music fans, but now, at the age of 56, I just couldn’t see myself fitting in. Almost without thinking, I replied that I would be busy on the day my friend had suggested, but as I pressed ‘send’, I immediately regretted my decision. My husband and I have watched Glasto on TV many times in recent years and each time we’ve seen people older than ourselves in the crowd. This reaction made me realise that since turning 40 I have begun to censor everything I do, looking at life through an ‘age appropriate’ lens rather than thinking about what I really wanted. 46
It was a sobering thought, but within ten minutes I had come up with a list of things I could do differently in future: Mum and Dad Dancing The jokes about “Dad dancing” have no doubt been responsible for millions of older men making an excuse to visit the loo as soon as the music starts playing at a family wedding. We’re all probably a little self conscious when it comes to dancing, particularly if our kids are watching, but provided you’re not planning to moonwalk or point at the ceiling, Saturday Night Fever style, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t strut your stuff on the dance floor. From now on, although I may not be the first on the dance floor, I certainly won’t be the last. Don’t be an age-conscious shopper Worries about not dressing appropriately for our age can hold us back when choosing what to wear. We opt for ‘safe’ styles that often have the effect of making us feel even older than we are.
It may have been different in the Seventies and Eighties, but these days you’ll find a real crosssection of ages browsing through the clothing rails.
feeling invisible, and that’s because they’ve lost confidence. Their body language says “don’t look at me, I’m not worth your attention”, so it’s hardly surprising that people no longer notice them.
Short skirts, revealing tops, body-hugging clothing and huge heels will still be out for me, but I’m giving myself permission to drop into some of the more youthful stores I used to shun, just in case there’s something that catches my eye.
A long, hard look in the mirror at home showed me that I was beginning to slouch - shoulders rounded, tummy sagging, head down – but when I lifted up my head and straightened my shoulders, I seemed more alert, more engaged with the world and – dare I say it – more youthful.
You’re never too old for adventure We may be less physically able than we once were, but this doesn’t rule us out from ever enjoying another adventure. Nowadays we may be more inclined to stay in a hotel than camp out at a music festival, but at least we are still taking part. Next time I receive an invitation from friends to go somewhere unusual, I won’t come up with the knee-jerk response of saying (or thinking) “I’m too old for that.” Don’t disappear into the crowd A lot of my older friends complain about
I’ve decided to join a local yoga class that will not only help me with my posture, but keep my body flexible. As older people we have surely earned our place in society? That means we have every right to enjoy life and express ourselves without fear of an adverse reaction. Teenagers are blissfully unconcerned about the views of their elders, and recently I’ve come to the conclusion that older people should take a leaf out of their book. I’ve decided that even if I live to be 100, nothing can stop me from living my life to the full.

Under Houston control The delivery of the Discover magazines to our distributors each month is a big task and Kevin does an amazing job ensuring everything is out on time, all carefully counted, packaged, and wrapped up if the weather is wet. However our distribution isn’t all day, every day and, as he’s recently taken delivery of a new van, Kevin is branching out into other services. Kevin will consider most jobs but is specialising in ‘awkward’ deliveries. If it’s fragile, impossible to wrap and generally can’t be shipped or put in a car, Kevin and his team are ready to step in. And, with 30 years’ experience of motorbike riding, there’s nothing Kevin doesn’t know about handling a bike so that’s work he’s keen to take on. “I’m offering collection and delivery for any size
bike. Whether your bike needs a service, you’ve just bought or sold one, or you are going to track day, you can be sure of a safe and expert service.” You might think that hiring a van and using your own labour is cheaper. But the hassle and the stress of trying to drive a vehicle with which you are unfamiliar shouldn’t be underestimated. Kevin says “when I used to hire a van, I saw damaged vehicles all the time. Sometimes just a scrape, sometimes significant damage. It’s just not the same as driving a family car.” With the whopping excess on hire vans – often as high as £1200 – you really need to think twice. Whatever you need doing, there’s no cost for asking so just call or see the website for prices. 55
Recipe
raspberry and Vanilla Panna Cotta
Serves 4
Ready in 1 hour plus overnight chilling
These delightful creamy desserts make the perfect Valentine treat! • 75g fresh raspberries, pureed • 1 sheet leaf gelatine PANNA COTTA • 600ml double cream • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 pared strips lemon rind • 50g caster sugar • 2 sheets leaf gelatine • Few drops pink food colouring TO SERVE • 2 ready-made chocolate brownies, halved horizontally • Fresh raspberries 56
1. To make the raspberry jelly hearts, line a small 6cm square
dish with cling film. Soak the gelatine in a shallow dish of cold water for 2-3 minutes. Heat the raspberry puree in a small pan with 1 tbsp water. Remove the gelatine leaf from the water and stir into the hot puree until dissolved. Pour into the lined dish and leave to cool, then chill in the fridge until set.
2. When the jelly is set, use a small heart-shaped cookie cutter to stamp out 4 heart shapes and place each one in the base of a small heart shaped ramekin dish (each about 150ml capacity).
3. To make the panna cotta, place the cream, vanilla extract,
lemon rind and caster sugar in a pan and bring slowly to the boil. Remove from the heat.
4. Meanwhile, soak the gelatine leaves as in step 1. Remove
from the water and stir into the hot cream until completely dissolved. Leave to cool for 30 minutes. Remove the strips of lemon rind and divide the mixture between two bowls. Stir a few drops of pink food colouring into one bowl. Spoon the two mixtures into the ramekins, to give two with colouring and two without. Chill for 6 hours or overnight until set.
5. To serve, cut and trim the halved brownies to make
four heart shapes the same size as the ramekins. Dip each ramekin into a bowl of hot water for a few seconds to release the panna cotta then turn each one out onto a heartshaped brownie. Decorate with fresh raspberries.

Gardening
Fighting the Frosts The frosts are here, and in the weeks ahead the worst of the winter is likely to arrive too. Added to that there is often a fair bit of rain or even snow at this time of year, so our gardens can be in for quite a battering. Now most of the plants you grow in your garden are probably fairly frost-resistant, but what can you do to ensure that damage to those which are not so hardy is kept to a minimum? Some deterioration may already have occurred, but it is the last frosts and those which hit the plants in spring that are likely to be most damaging, as they catch plants out when they have already put on a bit of new growth. So, there’s definitely a very good reason to brace yourself, get out into the garden and take some precautions.
Plants in containers are particularly vulnerable to freezing or frosting as their roots are not protected beneath the soil, but are relatively exposed with just the container and a bit of compost to cover them. Thin-walled containers pose the greatest threat, especially those made of metal. Thicker wood or ceramic pots provide a little extra insulation, but even these may need a bit more. Where possible, plunge your pots by digging a hole in the soil and placing the plant in its pot into the hole. If it is too heavy to move then wrap it up well in several layers of bubble wrap, polythene or old curtains – it may not look pretty but it’ll do the job. If the container is in a very prominent position and you want it to look more appealing, buy some hessian and use lengths 66
of this to create an outermost layer to hide the insulation material – it can actually end up looking rather nice!
If very harsh weather is forecast or there has been a spell of mild weather which may have promoted some soft, new growth that will be particularly frost prone, drape a double layer of horticultural fleece over the top growth of the plants and anchor it well. If you want to make life a lot easier then invest in some Easy Fleece Jackets: they come in three sizes and each one has a draw-string and toggle so that you can easily insert the plant and then secure it. You can find out more on my website www. pippagreenwood.com/products/protect-your-crops.
A double fleece layer can of course be used on plants in beds and borders too, or to protect slightly tender wall shrubs. Larger individual plants in borders, which are too big for even the large fleece jackets, can be given longer term protection with a homemade protective ‘cage’. Just use four stakes or sturdy canes to create a framework which you wrap with netting or chicken wire, then fill the central space around the plant with dry bracken, straw or leaves. Evergreens in containers and in open ground may

suffer from drought as well as foliage or stem growth – during the cold weather they continue to need a fair amount of water and if this is frozen solid in the soil, they soon suffer. So it is essential to continue to water these, especially if they are in a spot where they are sheltered from a lot of the rain which does fall, or if the weather has been dry. A deep mulch applied to the soil or compost surface before the ground becomes frosted will help too. Once frozen, soil moisture becomes unavailable, so this mulch will help to keep the water available. Although most fruit trees - like apples and pears, cherries and plums - are hardy, they are also prone to damage. The main risk is to newly-opened blossom, though the buds themselves may be damaged too, with late frosts being the most harmful as by then the buds are further developed. If you are planting new fruit plants, it really pays to buy them from a specialist nursery and try to get late-flowering
varieties where possible, as they are less likely to be flowering when there is still a risk of frost.
Finally, don’t forget to use fleece to cover any seeds already sown out of doors. A double layer of well-anchored fleece or a fleece-covered pull-out EasyTunnel is quick and easy to install, and will help to provide protection and that bit of extra warmth for germinating seeds and any seedlings brave (or foolhardy) enough to poke their heads above ground before the cold weather is over! If you are planning on sowing any early varieties of crops such as broad beans or lettuce, then I’d also suggest that you cover the soil before you sow. A layer of well-anchored polythene will keep off excess rain and allow a little warmth to build up, so when you sow the seeds they won’t suffer from excess sogginess and won’t get such a cold shock.

Mould, Damp or Salt on the Walls? Almost every homeowner at some time in their lives, experiences damp problems. Mildew, efflorescence (salts on the surface of the wall) and blistering plaster, means it needs treating as soon as possible and the plaster replacing with a “breathable” alternative. BKM Mannesmann UK ltd has a simple but technologically advanced treatment system for rising and penetrative damp. The process protects inside or outside walls of all construction types and materials.
The technology is developed from extensive experience in Germany and is now available in your area. The BKM product microscopically coats all the pores in the material, creating a hydrophobic barrier in all types of brick, stone-work, masonry, cement and lime render. It can be “gravity-fed” or pressure infused into the walls, dependent upon the condition of the wall. BKM also has an external breathable wall protection application, which seals all types of render, salt impregnated brickwork. Lime based paints and render can also be protected under
the 25-year Guarantee. Christian Franceschi, Regional Director for BKM Mannesmann UK ltd, says, “Thanks to this publication, there are many people in Hampshire & Wiltshire who have recently installed our system and are extremely Christian Franceschi, Regional Director satisfied with BKM Mannesmann Uk ltd the results” FOR YOUR FREE survey, contact Christian email: c.franceschi@bkmmannesmann.com or call him on: 01962 940 005 www.bkm-mannesmann.com

Home Interiors
declutter for the new year What could be a better New Year’s resolution for your home than to eliminate mess, create space and generally have a good sort out? If too much mess and clobber has built up in your home over the past year, then it’s time to declutter your stuff and sort your storage, so that your home will be mess-free and super-stylish in time for 2017. First, grab some rubbish bags and a few boxes or baskets. Work methodically through each room and sort out obvious rubbish, things that can go to a local charity shop, items that could be sold second-hand, anything that needs mending, littleused things that can be put away in the garage or loft, and genuinely great stuff that you want to keep. Try to get rid of as much as possible, only holding onto things that you really need and/or love. With what’s left, it’s now time to work out where it will go. Label your storage if necessary, and 74
make sure the whole family knows what’s meant to go where. If you still need extra storage after your clear-out, look for all the areas where you could fit more in, whether built-in or freestanding: from backs of doors to under the stairs, tops of wardrobes to under the bed. Think racks, hooks and shelves as well as conventional cabinets and chests of drawers and, where possible, ensure they co-ordinate with existing furniture. You can also relocate some storage; for example by adding a storage unit in the living room to avoid having to tidy toys away upstairs every day. There are a few rules of storage that might be helpful. First, store like with like and match the size and shape of the container to what’s being kept inside (in other words, find small, lidded boxes for things like Lego and big squishy baskets for teddy bears). Store as much as possible near to where it’s most needed, but don’t store frequently used items below knee level or above shoulder height, especially if they’re heavy. Avoid storing things on surfaces such as tables or desks, and allow yourself room to expand – but only within reason. If you have allowed extra space, and then filled it… it’s time to start all over again.
Easy ways to banish clutter • Write a list of where you want to declutter.
• Have an intensive declutter workout and spend five minutes clearing as much as you can in one area. You’ll be amazed at the difference you can make. Repeat as often as you can.
• Hang your clothes up with the hooks all facing one way, and only turn the hook the other way when you wear something. After, say, six months, you can easily assess which items you never wear. You could try the same idea in the kitchen (turn mug handles in one direction, put glasses upside down, and so on), the playroom, the living room… • Make it a family competition with prizes. Who will be the fastest to find three things to throw away, three things to give away and three things to tidy away? • If what you need is some emergency decluttering, pop everything into a big box and hide it somewhere until you have time to go through it properly.

News from Chandlers Ford & Winchester MP Steve Brine All MPs welcome groups of students to Westminster but I’ve made it my mission to host every constituency school, college and university during this Parliament.
The run up to Christmas saw The Westgate School visit, several primary schools and over fifty A-level politics students from Peter Symonds College. It’s one of the best parts of the job; I really enjoy the questions and hearing young peoples’ reflections on the fabulous Palace of Westminster and our current political scene. People used to say there’s no difference between the two parties, no point in voting because “you’re all the same”. They don’t say that anymore and it’s great!
I have visited all Chandler’s Ford schools at some point and many have visited in the past, including Hiltingbury Juniors (pictured) last Sumer. All are more than welcome to follow and should get in touch via www.stevebrine. com/visitingwestminster so I can connect them with Westminster’s brilliant Education Service.
On a different subject, I said since day one that the NHS would be my priority and I hope I have stayed true to my word. As I have written about many times - in this column, on my website and in the Hampshire Chronicle - there’s a great deal of potential change coming to our local NHS in the years ahead now something called

Interest rates are low, so what are your best options for saving? With interest rates set to remain low for a while, it is worth considering what you could do with the spare cash you might now have. It is always a good idea to pay off your debts first, but there is also some benefit to starting a small nest-egg. From April 2016 everyone has a Personal Savings Allowance, which means that many people won’t need to pay tax on their savings (subject to a maximum limit). This broadening of your options means you could switch your current account to benefit from the credit interest offered by a different bank, or perhaps opt for a fixed-term ISA that removes the temptation to spend. 82
With each bank applying their own rules for eligibility, here are a few of the different accounts available at the time of writing. Bank current accounts It is not something that we are used to, but currently some banks are offering high credit interest rates on their current accounts. Most of these deals only last for a year, however, and are used to attract new customers, but many also offer cash back or a monetary incentive. Nationwide offers 5% AER fixed on their FlexDirect account for balances up to £2,500. This rate lasts for one year only and then drops to 1%, so you will need to be prepared to swap again if you want to get a higher rate after this. In order to be eligible for the account you have to pay in at least £1,000 per month.
Regular savings accounts As the name suggests, these accounts require a regular payment in order to benefit from the higher interest rates. Again, some high interest rates are only available for a year as the banks use them as ‘loss leaders,’ assuming their new customer won’t be inclined to move once the rate falls.
that you have taken out in a tax year without it becoming part of the ISA limit.
First Direct offers 5% AER for one year, to customers holding a First Direct 1st Account. You are allowed to save between £25 and £300 per month, but if you miss one deposit your savings account will close and the balance will be placed into a low-interest account.
Atom Bank offers 1.4% AER for a one-year term, but you must open the account with their Android or iOS app, which won’t appeal to everybody. You can deposit between £50 and £100,000, and the interest is applied either monthly or annually.
Cash ISA Once the obvious choice to maximise your savings, a cash ISA can be a good place to start your nestegg if you don’t want to switch bank accounts or save a regular amount each month. The Coventry Building Society Easy Access ISA offers a rate of 1.1% AER. There is no limit on the number of withdrawals, and you can replace money
Accord Accountants
Fixed-rate accounts If you want to guarantee your rate of interest and are sure you won’t need the money for some time, a fixed-rate account could be a good option.
Savings accounts offer a guaranteed return on your money, which can grow surprisingly quickly, especially if the interest is applied monthly. Having some cash to one side gives you a degree of control to deal with unexpected life events such as redundancy, or simply the reassurance that you have a ‘cushion’ to fall back on. By Ann Haldon

Distributors for this magazine The Discover Chandlers Ford magazine is delivered every month by our reliable team of distributors. Although many distributors stay with us for years, teens grow up and adults grow older, meaning that we do regularly have vacancies in the area. We deliver throughout Chandlers Ford, but also in Otterbourne, Hursley and Boyatt Wood. Flexible work The beauty of this job is that we aren’t asking you to commit to a regular day, nor do we expect you to go out in unsociable hours. All we need is for you to be available once a month (or possibly once every other month) for a few hours, and we give you 5 days to do the delivery. Close to home We try to find a route close to home for you if we can, but if you are an adult we will pay mileage if we ask you to travel more than a mile. Rates of pay It depends on the route as some are easier than others. But for aged 13-16 (who usually get the easier routes) it’s a minimum of £5.50 per hundred magazines. For adults it’s a minimum of £6.75 a hundred, then there’s a bit extra for including leaflets. It should take around 45 to 60 minutes to deliver 100 magazines, but less time in some areas. Successful Separation? Keep Talking The breakdown of a relationship is upsetting, difficult and in many cases, truly devastating. Couples and families in this situation go through a multitude of emotions; hurt, anger, grief, bitterness, frustration, fear and uncertainty about the future, but the key to moving forward is, however painful, communication. Finding constructive ways for couples to deal with separation in a non-confrontational way is better, both financially and emotionally, for everyone involved and one of the most popular methods is that of ‘Mediation’. Mediation is a private and confidential dispute resolution process in which an independent, neutral person, the ‘mediator’, is appointed to support both parties in reaching an amicable settlement before there is a need to spend further time and often a great deal of money in Court. It is a process which, rather than looking back into the history of a relationship, is focused on each individual and their futures, without ignoring the emotion and pain of separation. Mediation provides the forum to
calmly explore the motivations and agendas of parties in order to potentially open up a whole range of solutions that can satisfy both individuals and reach a mutually acceptable, lasting agreement for the future. Through mediation, a dialogue can usually be established that enables couples to work together. It can offer not only critical examination of issues but also creative solutions beyond the powers and remit of the judicial process in Court. Reconciliation is always explored where appropriate, but if that is not a possibility, the first concern will be with regard to any children - shared care agreements and how often parents will spend time with them. Finance will also be considered as there will be a need for two homes rather than one. There may be issues involving pensions, shares and investments. as well as any debts such as loans, overdrafts and credit cards. At the core of mediation is the concept of confidentiality. Mediation involves not only joint meetings attended by the
mediator and both parties, but also private meetings between the mediator and individual parties alone. This can usually help avoid the raw emotion that is inevitable in a lot of initial face-to-face meetings. What is discussed in those meetings remains entirely confidential, although the financial aspects can be disclosed. There are great benefits to the process of talking things through in private in order to find ways of moving forward. Mediation is an ideal mechanism for dealing with disagreements as well as being an aid to the negotiation process. Anyone contemplating court proceedings must attend a MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting) to have the process and options explained to them. If they do not, a judge may refer the proceedings to mediation at a later date. Communication is particularly important for couples will be parenting children together in the future. Those who can resolve matters amicably do tend to move on with their lives more happily.

And Another Thing...
Tom’s New year resolution by Tom Hughes January - a new beginning, a new start. Sarah, my Dearly Beloved, plonked a cup of green tea in front of me and announced: “Tom I have decided that 2017 is the year of change. I have new dreams for this family. But before I go on, I want to hear all about your New Year’s resolutions.” Replacing my copy of Diesel Injectors for Dummies on the coffee table, my thoughts turned for the first time to the impending twelve months. “Well for starters, I am determined to avenge Nigel for his 4-0 whitewash on the pool table in the bar of the Old Paraffin Lamp. But of course that means more practice, so...”
Apparently, my punishing training schedule on the threadbare green baize in the bar of our local was not the kind of resolution Sarah had in mind. A glossy tome was unceremoniously plonked into my lap. “Welcome to Whitefield Gardens, your new Johnson Ian Home. What on earth is this?”
“Come on, grab your coat - we’re going house hunting.” Weaving the Mondeo around the exposed ironworks of an unadopted road, I eased my chariot into the visitor’s car park. Slaloming 90
through a strange wrought iron maze, Sarah guided me into an office adjoining a newly constructed house.
“This is the show home, Tom, isn’t it lovely?”
“The architect hasn’t half gone to town on the study hasn’t he? I could fit three desks in here.”
A middle aged lady wearing an azure blue suit, sporting Shirley Temple curls and a face the colour of burnt ochre rose from behind her desk and announced, “Sir, this isn’t an office, this is the garage.”
Wondering how easy it would be to smash the Mondeo through the double glazing, I followed Shirley Temple and Sarah through a white door into a white kitchen. I was about to step onto the shiny marble floor when our host span round and, holding up two blue plastic bags, requested that we put them on so as not to bring in any dirt into the show home. I dutifully complied and followed the two ladies towards the beautiful surroundings. As Sarah engaged Miss Temple in a conversation about light fittings, I decided to chip in with my twopenn’orth. “So how much is this pad anyway?” The two ladies turned to face me. Shirley Temple smirked, Sarah was appalled. “Tom, those blue covers are not for your head take it off !” “Oh right, I wondered why I had two anyway.”
“No, not on your hands, on your feet!”
Suitably protected, I popped my head into a cupboard under the stairs. “Someone’s left a toilet in here.”
A stony-faced Miss Temple corrected me. “That’s the downstairs cloakroom, sir. And through here is the lounge.” I followed Sarah into a modern-day front parlour where I nestled into the soft furnishings. “This armchair is very generous, I bet with a squeeze we could both fit on here.” “Tom, that’s the sofa. By the way I love the wallpaper.”
Shirley Temple beamed. “Thank you! We’ve had the whole house dressed by our interiors team.”
“When are they going to finish it off ? What about the rest of it?” “Tom - that is called a feature wall.”
Suitably chastised we adjourned upstairs to a collection of pokey rooms, most of which seemed to contain toilets. “Look Sarah, there’s another loo in here!”
“Tom, they are en-suites. I just love the way they’ve designed it all.”
“Bit cramped though isn’t it? Imagine shoehorning all our stuff into here?” “Well that’s the whole point, isn’t it dear - we are going to have to declutter!”
Miss Temple, irked at my candid remarks, through the most insincere of smiles said, “Maybe, sir, our Heritage Range of homes has not been aimed at people...like you.” “Then who have they been aimed at? Lilliputians with weak bladders?”
On the way home (conducted mainly in silence), I detoured to our local DIY store in an effort to repair marital relations, where I allowed myself to be frogmarched into the home interiors section and vigorously schooled on the benefits of the ‘feature wall’. And that, dear reader, is the story of how your narrator became the owner of a) one wallpaper table, and b) one rather unwelcome New Year’s resolution…

New HWRC opens A new household waste recycling centre (HWRC) opened on the 8th December at Stoneycroft Rise in Chandlers Ford (just behind the Partridge BMW showroom). The new facility offers less queuing, quicker turnaround times and considerably better access. The split level arrangement makes it easier for residents to deposit their household waste and recyclables, as bins are set at a lower level meaning users don’t have to climb steps. Additionally, it means the site does not need to close for waste removal as service vehicles can reach the containers directly from the lower level.

“I was hardly able to walk due to severe pain in my back and my cholesterol was very high. I never expected to lose the amount of weight I did over such a short space of time. The staff were all amazing and supportive, the programme easy to follow, the food enjoyable and the results speak for themselves. I would whole heartedly recommend Alevere to anyone who wants to safely lose weight and improve their health and lifestyle.” Teresa
