CAMPING IN COMFORT Before the arrival of our children 20 years ago, my husband and I used to have a small boat. Kevin would love to have another (boat that is, not child) but all the preparation and launching only to see the clouds roll in, puts me off. Still, we like the idea of being out for the day or a weekend and going to outdoor music events too, which often finds us in a field some distance from home. So, we pushed the boat out (ha!) and bought a second-hand campervan in January. Aside from the purchase price and the very reasonably priced insurance, I figured that a root around the back of the kitchen cupboard for pots and pans and my spend would be done. Hmm, wrong. The speedo wasn’t working; we knew that when we bought it. Then it needed a service
and a cambelt change, and some welding underneath. And some hoses for drainage from the sink had split. We weren’t planning a ‘proper’ holiday this summer, which is just as well really. However, I do need to give credit to Independent Car Servicing. We use them for the cars anyway but we needed to go somewhere that had room to get a tall campervan up on a ramp. And double credit for being honest and telling us that the tyres didn’t need changing even though we’d asked. But remember those couple of warm days in February? We went down to Bournemouth and into the New Forest and loved it - it’s fantastic fun. If you can afford a bit more, take yourself down to Viscount Caravans (see page 27) for a great range of campervans and caravans; if you can’t, visit anyway and buy the accessories for a cheaper one. No, hadn’t budgeted for that either!

History
HAPPY NEW MARCH By Catherine Rose March sweeps in on the coat tails of winter and it is not unknown for it to snow. Despite this, in the Northern Hemisphere, 1st March is meteorologically the first day of spring. The old saying that ‘March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb’ is perhaps appropriate. Dubbed ‘Hlyd’ by the Anglo-Saxons for ‘loud’ or ‘rugged’ (thought to refer to March winds), it is the month of the vernal equinox when the hours of day and night are split equally. By the end of March, spring is truly in the air and it remains the herald of longer, warmer days with its oceans of daffodils and narcissi. March is also a first for another reason. Its name comes from the Latin Martius, the Roman God of War, and it was the first month in the Roman calendar. This was traditionally a time for a feast known as Tibilustrium to celebrate the end of winter, and it was also a time for warmongering and invasions.
It is an ominous month in other ways too. The well-known Shakespearean quote “Beware the Ides of March” refers to 15th, when the first full moon of the Roman year appeared and Caesar was assassinated at the Senate. There is also an old superstition that if Easter falls on 25th or Lady Day, then disaster for England will follow:
‘When my Lord falls in my Lady’s lap
England beware of some mishap.’
Interestingly, this was the case last year and many consider 2016 to have been disastrous for the UK with Brexit, the US election results, and the untimely deaths of a larger than usual number of
4
British icons.
25th March remained New Year’s Day in Great Britain until the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1752, but it is still the first month in other cultural calendars even today.
Another popular phrase, ‘mad as a March hare’ was coined as early as 1500 after the lively March mating rituals of the hare. The Victorian author Lewis Carroll subsequently used the March Hare for a character in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Most people born in March will fall under the zodiac sign Pisces: the final sign that is said to capture the traits of all the eleven that precede it. Pisceans are known for being creative, imaginative, sensitive and compassionate, so it is rather a revelation to learn that more British Prime Ministers were born in March than in any other month. Celebrated across the globe, March also brings the Feast of St Patrick on 17th - a lively celebration of Irish culture. A 5th century missionary and bishop, St Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland whose designated day is a national holiday for partying and “the wearing of the green”. The Irish shamrock emblem with its three leaves is said to have been adopted as an explanation of the Holy Trinity when missionaries were converting the pagan Irish to Christianity. 2017 will see a parade, festival and other events in London to mark the event. In celebrating March, perhaps we should take a shamrock leaf out of the Irish book rather than following the Roman example. But whatever you do this month, try not to be a mad March hare!

ROYAL CHORAL SOCIETY One hundred years after the Russian Revolution, the Royal Choral Society returns to Winchester Cathedral to perform outstanding works by Russian composers – Prokoviev’s ‘Alexander Nevsky’, a cantata based on the composer’s score for Eisenstein’s 1938 film, and ‘The Bells’, Rachmaninov’s choral masterpiece. The choir will be accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra which will open the concert with Borodin’s ‘In the Steppes of Central Asia’. The concert serves as a reminder of the incredible contribution of Russian music to the Western canon. With musicians of the highest calibre performing in the stunning surroundings of this great cathedral, it will be a truly evocative concert. Home Interiors
Invaluable Decorating Tips Planning changes to your home? Interiors expert Katherine Sorrell has some handy hints… Living rooms
• Use a scale plan of your room with cut out mini furniture items, and move these around until you find the right positions. • The alcoves either side of a chimney breast are perfect for creating extra storage. • For maximum light, fit a pole or track that overhangs far enough each on side of the window to allow the curtains to be drawn right back. • Avoid using a central hanging pendant as the only light source, but add in table lamps, floor lamps and wall lamps for a more flexible and flattering ambience. • Consider ways to disguise the TV when not in use – can you adapt a piece of furniture, such as an armoire, so that it sits behind closed doors when necessary?
Kitchens • Have tall cupboards at one end of your cupboard run, with the hob nearby and plenty of worktop space between the hob and the sink. Add the dishwasher on the other side of the sink. • If possible, make worktops 700mm deep instead of 600mm, to give more working space and to better accommodate a large sink. • In an open-plan kitchen, choose quiet appliances, and design so the washing up is hidden from the view of the dining table. • Paint the inside of a wall cabinet door with blackboard paint to give somewhere to write a shopping list. • Base cabinets on legs, or recessed plinths, make the room seem larger. 10
Image Above: Shiva table lamp, £120, with black card shade, £75; Eclipse floor lamp, £155, with printed linen Ikat shade in black, £75; all Pooky: 020 7351 3003; pooky.com.
Bedrooms • Plan storage with precision, and divide the interior of your wardrobe into hanging space plus shelves, drawers and shoe racks. Consider storage gadgets such as belt racks and pull-out trays. • Maximise space by building fitted wardrobes right up to the ceiling. • Add a blackout lining to your curtains, or choose wooden shutters for additional sound and draught-proofing, and security. • Swing-arm lights on either side of the bed free up space on bedside tables. • A blanket box at the end of the bed is ideal for storing bedding and doubles as a seat. Children’s rooms • Kids’ tastes change rapidly so keep the walls, floors and major items of furniture relatively neutral and just change accessories, such as rugs, cushion covers and lamp shades, as necessary. • Cover boring walls with blackboard paint, magnetic wallpaper, peg board, maps or wall
stickers. • A high-level bed provides space beneath for study, play or storage. • Fit a dimmer switch so you can adjust the light from bright for playing or reading to soft and calm at bedtime. • Storage is all-important. Felt tips and paint brushes can be kept in tins, though beware of sharp edges. For storing tiny Lego sets and the like, ice cream tubs or shoe boxes are ideal. Bathrooms • If you’re on a budget, invest more in taps, shower doors and bath screens and save on a plain white suite, adding decorative appeal with tiles and attractive accessories. • Wall-hung WCs and washbasins create the illusion of extra space. • Hide pipework under floorboards or behind false walls and punch shallow shelves into the studwork to create useful storage niches. • Lights on both sides of your washbasin mirror dispel unflattering shadows. • Chosen a cast iron bath? Check it will fit up the stairs… By Katherine Sorrell

The ‘Afterlife’ of Social Media From posting and tweeting, to linking and liking, social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter are no longer just the playground of the young. More and more people of all ages are messaging, networking and sharing moments of their lives with others, but what happens to all that personal content after a person is no longer with us? Comments made and photos shared on Facebook, ‘tweets’ put on Twitter and blogs or articles published on website are all referred to as ‘Digital Assets’. The term also includes videos put on YouTube, music on Soundcloud and even CV and professional details LinkedIn profiles . At the moment, there is no specific law in the UK, to deal with digital assets upon death and so we have to rely on existing copyright UK law. The difficulty is when there is a clash between a family wanting to enjoy old pictures and memories on Facebook (effectively keeping the person ‘alive online’) and the internet service provider (ISP) which owns the server on which digital assets are stored. All ISPs have privacy policies and term and conditions to protect an individual’s privacy and the confidentiality of their digital assets after their death. Assuming that digital assets are original works that have been created using independent effort (i.e. you took your own “selfie”), there is no doubt
that the individual owns the copyright to them. This automatic right continues for seventy years after a person’s death. Then the rights pass to the deceased’s personal representatives, usually beneficiaries named in a Will. Whilst beneficiaries may have their benefactor’s logins and passwords, accessing an online account without specific authority (and because the person is dead they cannot grant it) could be an offence under the Computer Misuse Act 1990. In addition, terms and conditions of the ISPs often prohibit account holders from recording and passing on the details of logins and passwords to reduce the risk of hacking. A few ISPs do allow users to nominate someone else to have access to their digital assets following your death, but only a few. Until the law and ISPs catch up, the best advice is to put some thought into planning ahead in a Will or make effort to decide what you want to leave online, deleting accounts and passing on information as appropriate before death. The default position of the ISPs is to delete a profile that has been inactive for a certain period of time and, if that is actioned, you and your family will lose the digital legacy you chose to leave for them.

WANTED!
Distributors for this magazine The Discover Chandlers Ford magazine is delivered every month by our reliable team of distributors. Although many distributors stay with us for years, teens grow up and adults grow older, meaning that we do regularly have vacancies in the area. We deliver throughout Chandlers Ford, but also in Otterbourne, Hursley and Boyatt Wood.
Flexible work The beauty of this job is that we aren’t asking you to commit to a regular day, nor do we expect you to go out in unsociable hours. All we need is for you to be available once a month (or possibly once every other month) for a few hours, and we
give you 5 days to do the delivery. Close to home We try to find a route close to home for you if we can, but if you are an adult we will pay mileage if we ask you to travel more than a mile. Rates of pay It depends on the route as some are easier than others. But for aged 13-16 (who usually get the easier routes) it’s a minimum of £5.50 per hundred magazines. For adults it’s a minimum of £6.75 a hundred, then there’s a bit extra for including leaflets. It should take around 45 to 60 minutes to deliver 100 magazines, but less time in some areas. How to apply Go to discovermagazines.co.uk/deliveryteam to complete your details and to find out more information 21
And Another Thing...
Tom and the business opportunity
by Tom Hughes
Sarah was tidying up in the lounge when she chanced upon my newly purchased motoring publication. “Ferrari Owner? Tom? Have we won the lottery?” I entered carrying a cardboard box. “Not yet dear, but soon we will be rolling in it!” “Tom, what are all these boxes doing in the hall? And why have you got a funny look in your eye?” “I’m excited, that’s all. In these boxes is our future…our fortune.” Unimpressed, Sarah ran a knife down the packing tape and opened up the carton. “Why have you got boxes of coffee and tea? Don’t tell me you’re opening a cafe because the hours are a killer and…” “Don’t be silly. And this isn’t just any old coffee or tea, darling, this stuff is special coffee - it’s the elixir of life. It lowers cholesterol, promotes good health and generally makes you feel fantastic!” “Well that’s very nice, darling, but why have you bought so much? This lot will last us a lifetime.” Then the full horror hit her. She plonked herself 22
down on one of the boxes and put her head in her hands. “Tom, first it was water filters, then it was perfume, then it was vacuum cleaners, then it was those buy-to-let seminars. Do you remember them? If I hadn’t stopped you we’d be homeless by now.” My sheepish grin gave it away. Sarah strode into the kitchen and after a hefty shove managed to squeeze into the garage. “Tom, you can’t move in here.” It was obvious that Sarah viewed my shrewd investment as just another one of my hairbrained schemes. I felt that she deserved an explanation. “Sarah darling, this is a new way of doing business. This is Multi-Level Marketing.” “So you’ve signed up for yet another pyramid scheme.” Before I could protest there was a knock on the door. “Hi Uncle Billy, what brings you here?” asked Sarah. “Tom said there was a meeting tonight? A business opportunity? I could do with a few extra quid on top of my pension. And so could cousin Arthur.” And so, before you could say Bentley
Continental, our front lounge was full to the brim with relatives, neighbours and, bizarrely, the man who had arrived to read the gas meter. Flip chart in place, there was hushed chatter as I nervously paced the 80% wool twist. Then disaster - Sarah entered with a tray full of steaming hot PG Tips. Incensed, I shooed her back into the kitchen.
“No, it’s a business opportunity,” I beamed.
“Are you insane woman? Now pour that away and open a box of my product. Then wait until the end of the presentation when they can all have a taste.” Had she never seen Dragon’s Den?
“Sorry, can I just get into that cupboard? I need to take a gas reading.”
Then it was time to present my pitch to my potential distributors. Carefully, I explained that once they became one of my downline, I would earn a royalty from each bag of tea they sold. Realising from the look on Uncle Billy’s face that my future wealth was not the main motivation for him being there, I skilfully changed tack. “And of course, if you recruit your own distributors, then you get your own royalties!” A voice from the back (Mr Green from number 11) piped up, “So it’s a pyramid selling scheme?”
“Well I’m not convinced, and while you’re at it, any chance I can have my hedge clippers back?” Another hand went up. Feeling threatened, I decided to deal with the doubters head on. “Listen pal, if you’re not on board, you’re free to go.”
Finally, Sarah appeared with the elixir of life - the herbal coffee. My captive audience began sipping. They looked around at their fellow delegates. Then they took another sip to confirm my worst fears. It was absolutely horrible. As the last of my audience departed Sarah, shaking her head, had some advice for me. “Look Tom, you don’t have to prove anything to me. I think you’re wonderful as you are.” Beaming, I went to hug her. She responded with a shove. “Listen Richard Branson, you can have a hug after you’ve emptied the garage and taken that lot to the tip!”

Teaching to Tie Shoelaces Teaching someone how to drive can’t be that difficult can it?
I’m proud to say I have just qualified as an observer with my RoSPA Advanced Drivers group, which you can train to do after passing the Advanced Driving test and allows you to tutor others wishing to take their test. I found the observer test nervewracking, as not only are you passing on your skills to a third party as they drive but you are being observed in what you say, and do, by the examiner in the process. After the drive both parties provide an assessment of my experience and the ability of passing it on.
Now I love driving and I want to be the best I can at it. I want to position the car correctly on the road, at the right speed for the conditions, make progress and observe hazards and deal with them. But for me, actually passing that experience on to another driver was like teaching my children to tie their shoelaces. Once mastered, you just tie them automatically. But the act of explaining how you do it - that’s different. It’s much the same with driving a car: if you’ve ever explained to someone the procedure for finding the clutch bite point, you will realise just how much of what you do is “in the grey matter”.
So I salute driving instructors around the country, teaching others the skills of controlling a car; it is an art and skill that needs patience to deliver, and not all are capable of doing it. By Iain Betson

NEW AUDI Q5 Replacing ultra-successful cars is never easy for a manufacturer, but that’s the challenge Audi has faced with the Q5, the brand’s best-selling SUV. Built at the manufacturer’s most advanced ‘smart factory’ in Mexico, the refreshed offroader is packed with clever technology, features revised engines and a fresh look that the maker hopes will continue to win over buyers. But has it done enough? Looks and image
The new Q5 may be a little less flashy than its Jaguar F-Pace rival, but that smart new octagonal nose, dramatic headlights and sharp body creases give it fantastic presence on the road. That’s helped by a wonderfully squat stance and perfect proportions. Inside the quality is clear. Solid, good quality materials are everywhere and the leather seats are comfortable and perfectly adjustable. There is plenty of space around the driver and logically placed controls for the multimedia system. 38
There’s also a three-zone climate control system, an optional Bang & Olufsen sound system, and the optional virtual cockpit, which replaces the dials with a 12.3-inch high resolution display.
Space and practicality
The new Q5 is bigger and wider than its predecessor – but still 90kg lighter. Inside there’s more headroom and rear knee-room, while boot space is up 10 litres. Two adults will sit comfortably in the back, but a large transmission tunnel seriously eats into rear legroom in the middle seat.
Safety systems are plentiful and buyers can opt for active lane assist, pre-sense assistance which helps detect if a crash is imminent and can apply the brakes for you, and cross-traffic assistance at the rear that will help when pulling out of parking spaces. In slow moving traffic it’s even partly autonomous, slowing down and speeding up in jams while keeping you in your lane.
What’s under the bonnet?
There are three engine options to pick from – but the best seller, and our pick of the bunch, is the 187bhp, 400Nm, 2.0-litre TDI, which will account
for 60 per cent of sales in the UK. This comes as standard with a clever new Quattro Ultra all-wheel drive system that can switch seamlessly between two and four-wheel drive automatically. Fuel economy is 56.5mpg with emissions of 132g/km, and it hits 60mph in 7.7 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 135mph. A 2.0-litre TFSI petrol option with 250bhp is also available. It’s capable of returning 40.9mpg and emits 157g/km. A feisty 3.0-litre V6 TDi completes the line-up, producing 284bhp and a stonking 620Nm of torque.
Behind the wheel
The new Q5 is quite simply brilliant to drive. We tested the car on a variety of terrain, from motorways to cities and beaches to dirt tracks; it took them all in its stride. On the road it’s quiet, refined and accomplished, while in the grit it was surefooted and secure.
The revised 2.0-litre diesel engine is punchy and works brilliantly when combined with the 7-speed S-tronic gearbox - overall it’s by far and away the best choice of transmission.
Verdict
Audi has moved the game on with its new Q5 but not ruined a recipe that has won it so many admirers. Stylish, comfortable and great to drive, it’s now packed with even more clever technology and features. With best in class performance and economy, and some highly tempting optional extras, we’d be very surprised if any of its rivals managed to usurp it at the top of the sales charts any time soon. The Life List
It’s All Right For Some! By Derek Thompson When faced with delayed pensions, jobs stolen by robots, and endless reality television (we were lucky with The Family in 1974!), you can see why the younger generation thinks that we’ve had the best of it. Even their technology has helped us to catch up on decades of our favourite radio and TV programmes. It wasn’t always that way though, as they sometimes need to be reminded. Here’s a list of conversation starters, with just a hint of exaggeration. Our childhood was so deprived... • At Christmas we each got an orange painted stone.
• The school dinners were leftovers - from the dinners at other schools. • We were told that the radio only worked at teatime. • We shared a toilet with the municipal baths. • We had a single pair of socks between three of us - a brown one and a blue one. • Our Father Christmas letter simply read: all donations gratefully received. • We made all our own decorations out of last year’s decorations. • We glued pencil shavings together to make a new pencil. • It was a treat to be sat outside the pub with a lemonade. • As dad was a keen gardener, we had to follow the rag and bone horse until we’d collected a bagful. • We were only allowed to stay up late to watch programmes we couldn’t understand. • All the kids in class knew you’d redecorated by the cover on your exercise book. • Every child had to learn fractions to cope with mum’s Green Shield Stamps.

Hobbies
has the great pottery throwdown fired you up? By Kate McLelland The BBC’s Great Pottery Throwdown finished in December after its second series of six programmes. Made by the team that produced The Great British Bake Off, it aimed to find Britain’s hottest pottery stars and, like Bake Off, it has helped the British public to understand more about the creation of artisan products, whether that’s a sourdough loaf or a set of stackable breakfast bowls. Learning about the intricacies of pottery making has been a revelation to viewers who had previously not given much thought to the process, and since the series ended many have been eager to try it for themselves. So if you’re thinking of joining a pottery class, what are the basic things that you should know before you start?
It’s messy!
Think of two toddlers playing in a muddy field and multiply that image by ten to understand how you’ll look after your first go on the potter’s wheel. The essential ingredients when making pottery are clay and water – combine that with a wheel that spins your wet clay object around, and you get the picture. Be prepared to wear old clothes and shoes, cut your nails, tie back your hair and bring an 56
apron that covers from the chest down!
It’s not all about the wheel
There are two very different ways of making objects out of clay. Hand building, as the term suggests, doesn’t require a potter’s wheel: you will either make long, thin rolls of clay and build them up into a single shape (known as a pinch pot) or roll the clay out into slabs and join the pieces together with liquid clay to create a square or rectangular shape (slab pot). The expression ‘throwing’ comes from the way the clay is thrown onto the centre of a flat, spinning tray (the potter’s wheel) and squeezed into shape as it revolves at speed. You’ll need quite a lot of strength in your hands to do this, as well as patience. Inevitably the first few times you try, the clay will either slide off the wheel or you’ll make a perfect, cylindrical shape only to see it twist and warp at the very last minute.
It’s slow
If you’re one of those people who likes to see instant results, pottery making may not be right for you, as the production of finished objects takes time. When a piece is first made the clay is loaded with water and must be thoroughly and evenly dried out before it can be fired. That’s a minimum of a week for freshly made (or ‘green’) objects.
It’s a science as well as a craft
Making the initial clay shape is just part of a process that ends with a hard material that in some cases is almost as durable as stone. A pottery oven (kiln) is not the same as a domestic oven and an apprentice potter will need to learn how clay and
glazes react when heated to high temperatures. The process of heating clay and glazes to reach their optimal point of melting is usually achieved over two steps. Bisque firing is the first stage, where unglazed pots are heated just enough for them to be able to take the glaze that will give them their final, glossy finish. Once glazes have been applied the pots go back into the kiln for the glaze firing. At this stage pots must be kept completely apart or the glazes will melt on to each other and bond the pots together.
It needs space and investment
You may be happy to continue working with others as you learn your craft at a local pottery class, but eventually you might decide to go it alone. If so, you will need to find additional space for your hobby. A large shed or a garage with electrics connected would be ideal, provided there is adequate room for the wheel and the kiln, a surface to paint and glaze your pots and places for them to dry before firing. However the equipment
you’ll need can be costly: expect to spend between £600 and £2,000 on a potter’s wheel and £1,000£4,000 on a kiln, and that’s without all the accessories and materials you’ll need to make the pots themselves. Taking up pottery making can be hugely satisfying and rewarding but it’s not a hobby you can simply pick up and put down again. It may take several weeks for you to make your first pottery objects and it could take considerably longer before you are proficient enough to create objects you might offer for sale. If you are still keen to have a go, the Hotcourses website (www.hotcourses.com) has a list of over 1,000 courses available in the UK. Once again, the BBC has opened our eyes to a craft that has been largely overlooked in recent years. The Great Pottery Throwdown may not eventually prove as successful as The Great British Bake-Off, but at least it has helped us to understand the skill, passion and commitment required to make a simple pottery object that can be used and enjoyed for years.

Hockley Meadows Farm Appeal Supporters of the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust have raised £153,000 towards the purchase of Hockley Meadows Farm in Twyford. The Wildlife Trust plans to use the land to recreate the traditional wildlife-friendly farming methods that have shaped the Itchen Valley’s water meadows. As well as running a working wildlife-friendly farm, they’ll manage the surrounding floodplain meadows as a vital habitat for fantastic species like water vole, otter and the rare southern damselfly. • The 31 acre farm has been put up for sale by the farmer, as he is retiring. To ensure that the land is protected from future development or intensive farming, he has kindly offered to sell the farm to the Wildlife Trust at market value of £400,000. • A generous gift in a Will from a Winchesterbased support met half the purchase price, with an additional £153,000 being donated to the Wildlife Trust in response to its appeal for help. • The farm’s central location makes it a key piece in the jigsaw of wildlife-friendly sites the Wildlife Trust manages in the Itchen Valley.

mad march hair Gadgets for grooming, cutting, styling or removing, whatever your gender When it comes to looking after your hair or getting rid of unwanted hair, there’s no shortage of options - and no wonder, because the beauty market is worth huge sums of money. So it’s hardly surprising to see the likes of Dyson joining the party, albeit with a hairdryer that costs £299. The reviews are excellent, but if you’re anything like us you’re probably hoping to spend something more like £29 on a hairdryer. If that’s the case, keep an eye out for Tourmaline dryers from the usual suspects: it’s a kind of ceramic that enables hair dryers to deliver powerful airflow without leaving your hair looking like it’s been through the tumble dryer. Another great idea comes from late-night TV advertiser JML. Its £39.99 Simply Straight brush is a heated ceramic brush that promises to combine two essential items: your brush and straighteners. According to the Mirror it works really well - it’s not quite as effective as separate brushes and straighteners, but it comes awfully close and is very, very quick. One of the current trends in hair styling is steam. Stylers such as the Remington CB4N Flexibrush can be used without it, or you can pop some water in, wait 60 seconds and get fabulous, not frizzy, results. The Flexibrush was a cult classic in the 1990s, and Remington says it brought it back because it was getting 50 calls a week from people wanting to buy one.

There are lots of gadgets for hair removal too, from the usual epilators and shavers to more high-tech options such as IPL hair removal. IPL uses pulses of light to get rid of unwanted hair, and while it works brilliantly we’ve got bad news for anyone with ginger or light blonde hair, or very dark skin: IPL only works on darker hair colours on lighter skin tones. Prices aren’t as frightening as they used to be - for example, the £350 Philips Lumea SC2004/11 is currently on sale for a more reasonable £219 - and you can use them anywhere. Some models are even okay to use on your face. The downside is that they can take some time, so for example you should allow half an hour to do your legs. IPL is available for men too, although they aren’t recommended for use on your face or on anything more sensitive than the bikini line. Devices for men or sold as unisex devices tend to be more expensive for example, the Remington i-Light Pro is £299 and the Philips Lumea for Men is £350 - but they do work, provided you don’t have ginger or light blond hair. A big advantage for men is that unlike other hair removal methods, IPL doesn’t have stubbly regrowth, irritate your skin or lead to ingrowing hairs. There are plenty of grooming gadgets for men too. Facebook is full of ads for innovative razors and gadgets such as the £19 RazorPit Blade Sharpener. For hair removal elsewhere there’s no shortage of electric groomers, shavers and combined head and body trimmers, but shop around: recommended retail prices can be hilariously high, but retailers often sell the kits at huge discounts. That applies to women too: beauty gadgets vary wildly in price between retailers. It’s worth picking a favourite and using a comparison site such as pricespy.co.uk to make sure that looking good won’t be bad for your bank balance.

SWIFT FITNESS 1. “Summer bodies are made in winter”. Far too many of us chose to use the winter months for hibernating and procrastinating. Dark, long evenings of television, food and alcohol and before you know it, the pounds have crept on. As spring arrives you have to work extra hard to put it all right; often by crash diets that don’t work long term. Wouldn’t it be better and much healthier, to keep fit and toned during the winter, so you feel good all year long? 2. Once you’ve got going, you don’t notice the weather. Honestly, the hardest part is getting out the door. Whether it is dark, wet or freezing cold...you just enter our class “bubble”. Plus, when it is dark there is no one else around... just us. If you’ve ever felt self-conscious when exercising, come in the dark and be safe in the knowledge that no one else can see you! 3. It is fun. The ‘we are all in it together’ feeling and ‘can you believe we are doing this’, creates the best atmosphere and camaraderie. Hysterical laughter often accompanies the session and everyone goes home feeling uplifted and happy.
When people think of outdoor physical fitness the image of military style boot camps come to mind; lots of shouting, punishment and not for the faint hearted. Nothing could be further from the truth with the methods, instructors and programmes run by a new and successful company, Swift Fitness. Amanda Robertson explains why outdoor fitness is her favourite way to keep fit and healthy.
4. No matter the weather, outdoor exercise is ALWAYS a good workout. In fact, the colder it is, the more calories you’ll burn! As instructors, we have experienced all weather and no matter the conditions, we can run sessions that are fun, safe and hard work. Loads of calorie burning is guaranteed! 5. You breathe some very fresh air. The winter months are often spent dashing from one centrally heated building to another. Not only does this leave you feeling zapped of energy and tired, but can also make you more susceptible to headaches, colds and germs. 6. Many people suffer from SAD syndrome during the winter and even if you don’t, feeling slightly miserable seems to be the norm. Bootcamp and outdoor exercise quite simply, makes you feel happier. The mixture of exercise, which releases endorphins and being outside will leave you destressed, less anxious and feeling good.

DON’T KNOCK IT TILL YOU’VE TRIED IT! Outdoor workouts are fun, challenging and one of the fastest ways to get fit. Mother’s little helpers
Time, space and sanity savers to see you through spring If it’s been ‘one of those’ mornings, and you just haven’t had a minute to wash your hair, a dry shampoo can come in very handy. Philip Kingsley’s One More Day Dry Shampoo is a light spray that keeps excess oil at bay. Unlike some dry shampoos, this one doesn’t feel sticky or leave a powdery residue. It also helps to keep your scalp happy, so minimises flaking and irritation. And, as an added bonus, it gives your hair some extra 70
oomph and helps it to hold a style better. Priced at £14.50, the dry shampoo is available from www.philipkingsley.co.uk. I do love a good multi-tasker, especially one that smells as good as Darphin’s Revitalising Oil. I keep a bottle by my desk for a quick daily mini-facial. I also use it as a body oil, straight after a bath. It feels lovely and leaves skin much smoother. Finally, I work a few drops of the oil through my hair when it’s damp, to add a bit of extra shine. A little goes a long way, so the Revitalising Oil is actually not bad value for money at £25. Available from Space NK, House of Fraser, John Lewis and www.darphin.co.uk. ...Continued on page 40

GIPSY MOTH IV RETURNS TO BUCKLER’S HARD Fifty years ago, Sir Francis Chichester set sail on the Beaulieu River to become the first person to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe. Gipsy Moth IV is now on show again at the bottom of the High Street, where Sir Francis originally kept her before setting sail on his epic voyage. Gipsy Moth IV will be open to Buckler’s Hard visitors between 10am and 4.30pm on 14 - 17 April 2017. It’s a rare opportunity to climb on board the famous yacht for a tour and learn more about her record-breaking history and amazing story. More tales and artefacts from the voyage are on show in the attraction’s Maritime Museum, including a map, personal items from the adventure and records of the floodings and even a capsizing which put the journey at risk. Plans to celebrate the anniversary of the homecoming to Buckler’s Hard in September 2017 are already underway. “It is a beautiful spot and keeps her much more visible to the public as she is moored at the bottom of the ‘street’ between the old shipwright’s cottages. We all feel that this is a wonderful place for her to be, especially as this is where Sir Francis originally kept her before heading off on his circumnavigation.”
A Record Breaking Adventure Sir Francis Chichester, the son of a clergyman, set a number of world firsts and records through his successful voyage. He was the first person to sail solo around the earth and the fastest circumnavigator with his record of nine months and one day, which was almost twice as fast as the previous record. To prepare for the voyage, Buckler’s Hard shopkeeper Mrs Rhoda Martin’s task was to preserve eggs by covering the shells with liquid paraffin and de-eyeing hundreds of potatoes to prevent them from sprouting. According to the provisions list he took 156 eggs and 30lbs of potatoes on the outward journey. Sir Francis sailed from Buckler’s Hard on August 12th 1966 for trials on the Solent before finally leaving Plymouth on August 27th. After 226 days at sea, with only one stop in Sydney, the 65-year-old sailor and former aviator finally returned to Buckler’s Hard on September 17th the following year. He had travelled a staggering 29,630 miles in the 54ft ketch. Weeks after his circumnavigation, Sir Francis was knighted for “individual achievement and sustained endeavour in the navigation and seamanship of small craft”. For the ceremony, the Queen used the sword which had been used by her predecessor, Queen Elizabeth I, to knight the adventurer Sir Francis Drake who was the first Englishman to complete a circumnavigation with his crew. Sir Francis was also later honoured on a postage stamp, which showed him aboard Gipsy Moth IV and he still holds a special place in maritime history. Asked why he undertook the journey, Sir Francis Chichester said simply: “Because it intensifies life.”

Does your pet have joint problems? Joint pain can cause severe mobility problems that take away your pet’s joy for life, but it’s not just older animals that suffer in this way. Genetic issues such as hip or elbow dysplasia in dogs, or an old injury, increase the risk of them suffering from arthritis. What to look out for It’s fairly easy to spot the signs of arthritis in dogs, simply because they are in your company more than a rabbit or a cat, for example. These are some of the indicators to watch out for:
20430
• Stiffness when your dog gets up, or after a walk. • They walk with a limp, even if only for a few minutes. • Your cat’s reluctance to jump on your knee. • Your rabbit being less inclined to run around its cage.
It can be particularly difficult to notice the signs of arthritis in a rabbit, as one of the ways they survive in the wild is to move less when they’re injured, so as not to appear vulnerable. Is there anything you can do to prevent joint problems in your pet? As far as puppies are concerned, it’s important not to over-exercise them while their bodies are still developing. Being overweight will also have a huge impact on your pet’s joints, so watching food intake is a key factor.
The vet may prescribe an anti-inflammatory if your pet has severe joint pain, or glucosamine and chondroitin, as these are supplements known to help with mobility. 75

I LOVE FOOD. PUBS. AND MY DOG, WHISKY And not always in this order. Which means that I like taking my very energetic 2-year-old cavapoo for walks all around the beaten tracks of Hampshire. That’s a treat for him. And then I like stopping on my way home via a pub for a drink – or two. That’s a treat for me. There is even one pub I know that is sooooo crazy about our four-legged friends that they call themselves “the most dog friendly pub in the forest”. And oh my, Whisky would agree. The Compass Inn in Winsor is a true haven for dogs, where they get doggy meals and treats from the chef. They run monthly dog walks too! Whisky’s other favourite pub is the Rockstone on Onslow Road in Southampton city centre. There might not be a great walk around that particular area for dogs, but it’s worth going there anyway for a fabulous treat to your palate. Selfish, I know. But when a pub offers

me 52 rums, 37 gins, 20 whiskies, too many beers and ciders to count as well as the best and biggest burgers in town, I tend to listen to the call and spend a lot of time there with my dog. But do book, as the place gets fully packed. It’s THAT good. Watch out for their first Gin Festival on March 31-April 1, following the immense success of their annual Rum Festival. Do try it, with or without dogs, the place is amazing! When in Southampton, I also tend to go to Highfield for a walk in the woods. When Whisky’s little legs get tired (or when I huff and puff, whichever comes first), we head for the fabulous Brewhouse and Kitchen on Highfield Lane. Whilst Whisky gets a truly lovely welcome and a lick from Head Brewer Matt (or is it the other way round), I crawl to the bar (I have little legs too) and order a pint of their own on-site brewed real ale. They offer a fantastic selection of craft beers and truly lovely food in a super trendy environment. Jane’s Army Sought 2017 brought news to the Romsey Cancer Support Centre (RCSC) that Jane Scarth House had been given planning permission for a change of use and an extension to 37a The Hundred. This means that the work can now start to prepare this as the new home for Jane Scarth House. The planning permission includes an extension to the side of the current building to increase the floor space. This will enable the charity to provide a large befriending area, two counselling rooms and two therapy rooms, as well as a disabled loo and a kitchen. The hope is that the work will be completed by the middle of 2017 but there is a lot to do before then. It is planned to mobilise a ‘Jane’s army’ to build the extension, using donated labour and materials. ‘We’ve had several companies and individuals come forward to offer their support’ reports Trustee Sue Jones. Recipe
thai green curry
Serves 4 Ready in 35 minutes
This classic curry is great for a mid-week family supper – it’s quick to make and tastes delicious! • 200g Thai jasmine rice • 1 tbsp sunflower oil • 1 onion, peeled and thinly sliced • 2 tbsp Thai green curry paste • 1 large red pepper, deseeded and thinly sliced • 1 large courgette, sliced • 450g chicken breast fillets, cut into chunks • 400ml can coconut milk • 1 tbsp soy sauce • 1 tbsp fish sauce • Squeeze of lime juice • 2 tsp nigella seeds 80
1. Cook the rice in a large pan of boiling, lightly salted water for about 15 minutes until tender, or follow the packet instructions. 2. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and fry the onion for 5 minutes. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in the pepper and courgette and fry for a further minute. 3. Add the chicken and cook for 3-4 minutes until no longer pink, stirring all the time. Pour in the coconut milk and simmer gently for 10 minutes until the chicken is cooked. Stir in the soy and fish sauces and lime juice. 4. Drain the rice and use a small heatproof cup or bowl to make four mounds of rice on warmed serving plates. Sprinkle the nigella seeds on top and spoon the curry on the side.
TIP Add a handful of freshly chopped coriander leaves to the curry at the end of cooking time, if liked. Or for a spicier flavour, garnish with shredded red chilli pepper.

News from Chandlers Ford & Winchester MP Steve Brine It’s a brave politician these days who talks about building a wall but that’s exactly what I am going to do in this month’s column. THE WALL is a unique project working to build a national Christian monument to answered prayer and it launched in Westminster last month at an event I was blessed to attend. It will be built somewhere in the Midlands near a major motorway (think Angel of the North) from one million bricks, each representing a single prayer. It is being led by Richard Gamble who is a remarkable man following a dream - and answering a call. What’s equally exciting is that Winchester based Snug Architects are one of the five shortlisted designs for what is an international competition being overseen by RIBA. You can view Snug’s entry via www.snugarchitects.co.uk and find out more about THE WALL as well as contribute at www. thewall.org.uk February saw my annual opportunity to address 82

Throughout 2017, the National Trust’s heathland restoration site, Foxbury, will host Forest School events run by qualified professionals, Jenny Mueller and Caroline Kelly. They have created a way of building independence, self-esteem and a positive attitude towards learning in children. The children will explore their surroundings, experience the natural world for themselves and get dirty, just how they like it. This programme is ideal for all, but is especially good for children with low confidence or an abundance of energy, building valuable communication and team working skills. Jenny and Caroline will be using Foxbury’s 84

Gardening
HOW TO HEDGE There is nothing better than a living boundary around or within your garden, and it is difficult to beat a hedge. Hedges can be smart or informal, neat and compact or thicker and sturdier, evergreen or deciduous and can even have pretty flowers - and now is an ideal time to plant a new hedge. First, prepare the area by forking the soil over thoroughly and remove large stones, debris and pernicious weeds. This also helps to break up any compaction and to aerate the soil, making it a better place for plant roots. You should fork in well-rotted garden compost, manure or proprietary compost if the soil is either very sandy and light or very heavy with clay, and at the same time incorporate a complete fertilizer. Don’t plant right up against an existing fence, as the plants won’t grow well. At this time of year you can create a hedge very effectively using ‘bare-root’ plants, but if you want to plant a hedge at any other time you will need container-grown plants. If using pot-grown plants, water them thoroughly and then carefully remove each plant from its pot. If the roots are tightly packed, tease them out firmly before planting. If you’re using bare-root plants, plant them immediately. It is essential to plant and space the plants correctly, to both achieve the desired effect and ensure the plants establish well. Once out of the pot, position the plant in the prepared soil at the same depth as it was in the pot; for bare-root plants only the roots should be beneath the soil. 86
Euonymus Firm the soil around each so that it is in good contact with the roots. Hedging plants should generally be spaced about 30-45cm apart. For a thicker or denser hedge, plant two parallel rows, each with a 45cm spacing between the plants, but positioned so that the planting is staggered like bricks in a wall. Once the whole hedge is planted, water the soil thoroughly to help settle the soil around the roots and so allow the plants to establish. On windy sites or with larger plants use small, temporary stakes such as bamboo canes to stabilise the plants. Keep the hedge well watered, especially during dry or windy weather. The first 18 months is the most vital period. Some great hedging plants:
• Yew - a formal, evergreen hedge. • Thuja - a stunning conifer hedge for year round colour. • Beech - a deciduous plant that gives a good effect for much of the year. Both purple and green-leafed forms. • Hornbeam - great as a neatly clipped hedge, but more prone to mildew than beech. • Cypress – excellent if kept well clipped and cut back regularly.
• Pyracantha - spiny evergreen with pretty creamy-white flowers and red-orange or yellow berries. • Privet - the classic town hedge. • Euonymus - evergreen, some variegated green and cream, others green and yellow. • Hawthorn - deciduous and potentially thorny, good for wildlife. • Blackthorn - deciduous and very thorny, with pretty white flowers followed by sloes – but can easily get too vigorous!
