Hello and Welcome I was chatting with some friends recently about the conundrum of why it takes so long to do little tasks. One was saying about the button that had been on the windowsill for a month, and another was wringing her hands about the picture that she bought in the summer and still hadn’t hung up. My shameful overdue task was a dress lurking in the bottom of the washing basket. Being an evening dress I had no urgency for it, and as it wouldn’t have fitted me anyway until recently*, the motivation wasn’t there. Still five years is a long time to leave something unwashed! Suffice to say, the act of confessing was enough to spur all of us into getting our jobs done. Each of our tasks took next to no time and left us wondering why on earth we hadn’t done them before. We couldn’t come up with an answer but resolved to try to stop the procrastination. To be fair to ourselves though, often the stalling is genuinely to do with lack of time, ability or tools. Never is this brought home more than this time of year. The first light of

spring shows up wear and tear on our properties, and Claudia Leaf has written about this on page 60. Then when you go out into the garden the long wet winter has left a real job for us to do to bring our gardens back to even an acceptable level, let alone ‘glorious’. It can be overwhelming when you see how much is to be done. It is time to ‘outsource’. Rather than beat yourself up about all those jobs you have neither the time, the inclination or the ability to undertake, look through Discover Chandlers Ford and find a man (or woman) who can! Tania *More updates have been added to my weight loss blog at www.discoveryourtoes.co.uk.

DISCOVER GARDENING

Seed Sowing on the Cheap by Pippa Greenwood If you want your garden full of colour, interest, perfume and perhaps even tasty crops, there’s no doubt that the least expensive way to do it is to raise your plants from seed. But what can be done to ensure the results in the garden are just as impressive? Start with a little self-restraint. It’s all too easy to buy enough seed to fill a tennis court when you have an average-sized garden. Make a list of what you actually need and put a limit on how many un-planned purchases you’ll allow yourself. Think about sharing. Each packet of seed often contains tens or even hundreds of seeds, so why not agree to swap a few with friends and relatives. This will not only save you money, but will also maximise the range of plants you can grow without increasing your outlay. Don’t be tempted to sow too many seeds at one time. By sowing little and often you’ll maximise flower time of annual flowers and cropping time for vegetables and herbs. It also means that if the conditions are not right for germination on one occasion, all is not lost. You may not need to buy what you want. Collect seed from your garden or from gardens of friends and neighbours, making sure that the plants are healthy and that they’re ready and ripe or they won’t germinate. Seeds labelled as ‘F1’ will produce flowers whose seeds will not ‘come true’, meaning that the offspring will not be the same as the original plant and will often be less productive. Try to harvest the seed when the plants and the weather are dry, remove any bits of plant debris and allow them to dry off naturally, not becoming too warm or cold. If you

6

C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61

can’t sow the seeds immediately, make sure you store them, well labelled, in a cool, dry place. A small heated or even un-heated propagator can help you reliably raise a far wider range of plants from seed. Choose one which is sturdily built and has proper ventilation in the clear plastic lid, otherwise seedlings may die on hot days. We stock some of the lovely UK-made Stewart propagators at www.pippagreenwood. com. Seeds do best if not sown too closely, and by sowing thinly you’ll also save yourself time and money. Wider spacing makes for less thinning out but if you do have to thin out a bit, remember that most seedlings will perform well if looked after properly. Many herbaceous perennials can successfully be divided into several new plants. Indeed most herbaceous plants do better when occasionally divided as the plant does not become so congested and you can dispose of the grotty bits and plant the good sections into fresh soil. Many plants are also easily propagated from cuttings, and over the next few weeks, you could get some great cuttings from summer favourites such as fuchsias for virtually no cost at all. They’ll be flowering later this year too. Visit www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ where you can choose from a fantastic selection of vegetables for planting AND receive an email each week telling you all you need to know to ensure great results – from just £29. You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter and receive a free ebook on organic gardening, and buy Nemaslug and other garden products.

A Beautiful Lawn - No Sweat!

Rescue Your Lawn

This will increase the resistance to fungal diseases and with a regular program of feeding turn your lawn into a healthy green sward also tolerant in longer dry spells. If you haven’t done your first cut, keep the blades high until the weather warms up and then reduce the height of cut accordingly.

The arrival of March means that – at last – spring is just around the corner. With a long grey and very wet winter behind us (hopefully!) it’s time to survey the effects of those months on our garden. As the lawn is the biggest feature in our gardens, it is this area that is likely to need the most immediate work to make it into the longed for ‘bowling green’. Green Keeper have had over 13 years of bringing their client’s lawns back to their summer glory and business owner Rob Wiffen tells us:

At Green Keeper Lawns we use the very best professional products and encourage the use of organic alternatives. We have a wide range of fertilisers and treatments available. Our existing customers are delighted with the way their lawns have been transformed over a relatively short time. We tailor a treatment program specific to a lawn’s individual requirement and monitor it throughout the seasons. This reduces the long term impact on your pocket and by using organic alternatives also the environment.

“Your lawns will benefit from a scarification, hollow tine aeration and good quality top dressing. Top dressing while the grass is actively growing will help increase the microbial and bacteria content of your lawn.

Please call us for tips and advice or visit our website www. greenkeeperlawns.co.uk. Professional lawn care is cheaper than doing it yourself so give us an opportunity to do a free lawn analysis.”

"It's magic" says Harry Potter actor

Michael Henbury - Britain’s smallest man and actor as Ewok in Star Wars has at last with the help of Hampshire Hearing broken through his own sound barrier. At the age of 51 Michael found he was not hearing as well as he needed to and searched for a solution from his Doctor and after a year of treatment was eventually offered an operation to help his hearing loss. Not wanting to go down the surgical route, Michael sought advice from Gary Whettingsteel at the Hampshire Hearing Centre “they were incredibly helpful and it was fantastic to talk to people who understood the challenges I was living with”. Gary immediately lent Michael a hearing aid whilst he sought the best solution for him – when Gary turned the hearing aid on " it was a revelation" said Michael "I had not heard this well for years - if ever" and realised how much I was missing out Gary contacted Starkey UK Ltd the manufacturers of the World’s smallest hearing aids for their expertise in such rare fittings. Hearing of Michaels plight Starkey arranged for a pair of their new "Soundlens" hearing aids the world’s first invisible-in-the-canal hearing instrument to be made. Michael was indeed a challenge because of the size of his ear canals but if anyone could help then " I knew it would be Starkey" said Gary. Michael had recently been in a Harry Potter production and Starkey have certainly worked Michael is a star of the big UK. there magic for the in man t lles sma .... en... scre him.

If you want to hear out of this world like Micha el then visit the Hampshire Hearing Centre in Chandlers Ford for an unbeatable experience .

Michael has now been wearing a pair of the latest Starkey hearing aids for a year and is over the moon with the results. He says "thanks to the Hampshire Hearing Centre I can now live my life normally and continue my career without having to worry about not being able to hear properly" he continues – “it’s like they were designed especially for me” Above everything else Michael has said it’s his quality of life that has improved the most: “Without the hearing aids my life would be so different”.

DISCOVER MONTHLY FEATURE

The Reshaping of Britain’s Railways Have you ever thrown away something you think you don’t need any more and then some time later you find a use for it, and it’s too late? It happened to the whole country in the years 1963-1970, when we closed a third of our railway stations and 4,000 of our 18,000 miles of railway line. The axe man always blamed for this carnage is Dr Richard Beeching, chairman of the British Railways Board from 1962-1965 and author of the report, ‘The Reshaping of Britain’s Railways’ published 50 years ago in March 1963, which started the slaughter. He died in 1985 but who was he? And was he entirely to blame? A physicist by discipline, Beeching rose through the ranks of ICI to become an expert in production efficiency. In 1959, he was seconded to a committee of the British Transport Commission which wanted to cut the railway network’s losses. These had risen from £15.6m in 1956, just after the ambitious modernisation plan that started the replacement of steam by diesel and electric, to £42m in 1960. Beeching was a great advocate of deep cuts in the network, clashing with committee chairman Sir Ivan Stedeford – a stance which earned him the favour of Transport Minister Ernest Marples. Marples was an apostle of road transport – a fact entirely unconnected with his family firm’s road-building contracts: he sold his shares when he took office, albeit with a clause allowing him to buy them back at the same price. Dr Beeching was given the chair of the BRB (at a salary more than twice that of the Prime Minister’s) and soon published his report which was duly rushed into action. The following year Labour came to power on a promise to stop the bitterly unpopular programme, but, lured by the promise of easy

24

savings, it reneged. Beeching himself returned to ICI in late 1965 after the summary rejection of a second report advising even deeper cuts; but Labour continued to implement the 1963 recommendations right up to 1970. The promise was a cruel illusion. The 70,000 jobs, 2,600 country stations, 300,000 goods wagons, and 4,000 miles of branch line that disappeared saved nothing, and in 1970 British Rail lost not £42m but £100m. Beeching may have been a production expert, but he had no understanding of logistics. Whilst many lines may have been unprofitable (30% of them carried just 1% of all passengers, while 50% of all stations raised just 2% of overall ticket revenue) they fed the main lines and had made them profitable. Freight carriage, too, dwindled as large factories lost the branch lines that connected their sidings to the network and so, took to the roads. It’s suspected that Beeching’s recommendations were more political than operational. Apart from Marples’s rumoured venality, powerful forces both in business and the trade unions favoured road; and the railway, with its record of failure (3,300 miles of branch line had already been closed in the previous 15 years), had no counter-argument. Beeching did not consider the huge efficiency savings available through slashing the over-manning of the branch network: his brief was to cut, and cut he did. He described his programme as “surgery, not mad chopping”: he was certainly not the kind of surgeon you would want operating on you. We could do with those 4,000 miles of line now, as our roads strain and burst. The moral of this story is – don’t ever chuck things out, because you never know when they might come in handy.

DIS COV ER LO C AL WALK

Horsebridge & Kings Sombourne Walk Walk Distance 4.7 miles Historical Notes Horsebridge is situated on the old ‘Sprat & Winkle’ railway line that ran from Andover to Kimbridge junction in the south. Royal Assent was granted in July 1858 for the line to be built by converting a canal built earlier in 1792. The route was to run parallel to the rivers Test and Anton. A 14-gun salute celebrated the cutting of the first sod by Lord Palmerston in a field near his home at Broadlands, Romsey. The line opened to traffic in 1865 but was not a commercial success, closing in 1964. The name Kings Sombourne is probably derived from Saxon times in that the area was a ‘kings’ possession. Sombourne relates to a stream associated with pigs. Remains of large stone buildings to the south of the churchyard are presumed to be the remains of a Saxon royal palace. The Doomsday book records the village as Sombourne Regis. • Horsebridge is situated just a short distance away from the main A3057 Romsey to Stockbridge road South West of Kings Sombourne. On entering the hamlet, park on the grass verge at opposite the junction with the Broughton road, by the John O’Gaunt pub (SO20 6PU). Alternatively, turn into the Broughton Road and turn left opposite the pub onto a gravel track leading to the ‘Test Way’ public car park.. • Walk along the road in the direction of Romsey. Follow the road as it bends around a large barn on your left and at the end of the barn turn left onto a signed bridleway. • Climb slowly uphill along the boundary between two fields. At the top of the rise, pass to the right of a farm gate and emerge onto the main A3057 road. • Cross the road diagonally left onto a lay-by. At the left hand side of a metal farm gate join a

footpath running parallel to the main road. • Continue straight ahead following the left hand fence-line heading towards Kings Sombourne. • Emerge into Palace Close and walk along the road straight ahead to a ‘T’ junction. • Turn left along the road then walk through a cut-way into a close. Follow the road left to another ‘T’ junction. • Turn right then left onto Furzedown Road. Walk down this road then turn right along the road signposted to the Sombournes. • With Nutchers Drove opposite, cross the footbridge over a stream and turn left back towards the main A3057. • As you near the main road, turn right to reach the main road. Cross the road and into Cow Drove Hill road. • Walk uphill to a bungalow on your right named ‘Sunrise’. Turn left up some wooden steps onto the signed Clarendon Way. • Turn right and walk uphill following the field right-hand boundary. Near the top of the hill, emerge onto a metalled lane and turn left. • Walk along the lane ignoring the path joining from your left. As the lane bears right, continue straight ahead along a tarmac and gravel track. • At a crossing of tracks, continue straight ahead along a signed ‘Private Road’. • Continue along the track as it passes through water meadows and over the various branches of the River Test. Walk to the left of a metal gate to emerge onto a road. • Turn left and walk along the roadside verge ignoring the Clarendon Way turning on your right. • Walk past Faithfulls Drove on your right to a ‘T’ junction. Turn right onto the Dunbridge road. Continue along the road past the Broughton turning on your right.

• Pass the shared entrance drive to Bossington Estate and its attendant lodge house on your left and the entrance lane to St James’ Church. • As you reach some farm cottages on your right, turn left onto a signed track crossing the road and walk between two fields. Continue along the remains of this Roman Road that at onetime ran from Sarum to Winchester. • Continue along this path as it crosses over the various branches of the river once more. At a stile, cross into a field. • The path here is indistinct, but walk straight across the centre of the field bearing slightly diagonally left towards a hedgerow. Cross a stile to join the track bed of the redundant railway. • Turn left and pass Horsebridge station to your right. At a fork in the path, bear left to continue along the track bed passing once more over the river. • On joining the road, turn right to rejoin your car

Don’t lose those precious memories It used to be that the data held on our computers was fairly unimportant. If a disaster occurred and our hard disk failed or was wiped out by a virus, then we normally had a ‘hard copy’ or could re-create our address book and it didn’t matter that much. Today though things are very different and the majority of us have a great deal more to lose should the worst happen and our letters, photos, e-mails and music library were to disappear. It is often the case that our data is more valuable than the hardware it resides upon – we can purchase a new laptop or desktop computer for a few hundred pounds but our data (particularly for businesses) and memories are quite simply priceless. Although we will probably never be 100% secure against data loss, we can certainly minimise the risk by being disciplined enough to keep our files in well-ordered and maintained folders and by making sure that we back them up. Some people sign up for low cost or ‘free with your broadband’ data backup facilities. All well and good but did you know that many of these services offer limited recovery, with no ability to roll back to previous file versions if corruption or deletion occurs. Think about that for a moment – you might have been backing up your files online for months but then your computer and files get corrupted and the backup simply backs up the corruption for you. Online data backup is a good way to help

protect yourself but you need to choose the right kind of package to ensure maximum protection. CD’s and DVD’s have a limited life, USB sticks and external drives can fail as well. The answer is probably to spread the risk and maximise the chances of recovery by backing up and then backing up your backup! If you are worried about the implications of losing your data then why not talk to one of the Widenet team. We can’t give you a 100% guarantee that you will never lose another file again but we can give you impartial and practical advice to at least reduce the risk. If the worst comes to the worst though, we would send your failed drive away to our specialist partners who can retrieve a lot of the data by disassembling the drive. But prevention is a lot less expensive than cure and a little bit of safeguarding could save a lot of worry and heartache. By Widenet Computer Services Ltd

DISCOVER LIFE BEGINS

Life Begins Preparing for that difficult time

by Claudia Leaf

When Jeanette Palfry visited her local Registrar’s Office to register the death of her mother, she thought she was well prepared. As required by law, she had made an appointment within five days of her mum’s passing and had brought a copy of the doctor’s death certificate. However, she found that when the Registrar asked basic questions about her mother’s life, grief made her mind go blank. “When mum finally died after a long illness, it felt like the end of a journey,” explains Jeanette. “I was totally unprepared for the new challenges that lay ahead.” The visit was the first of many practical arrangements that would be required, including notifying others of her death. Most people inform friends and family as soon as possible, but they must also consider the deceased person’s official contacts, such as banks, building societies, the Inland Revenue and utilities. Some areas offer a “Tell Us Once” scheme which allows the Local Authority to notify other government departments and authorities about a death, but otherwise it will require individual notifications. The Registrar will issue a certificate for burial or cremation together with a certificate of registration of death. You will need to purchase copies of this certificate (costing £4 each) in order to inform the relevant organisations, but it may be several weeks before each document is returned. You should therefore buy as many copies as you can afford: the cost increases from £4 to £7 if you have to return to buy more, aside from the inconvenience of having to make another trip. While you are dealing with the practicalities of registration and notification, you will also need

to think about the funeral arrangements. If your loved one did not leave clear instructions, you may be confronted by a number of bewildering choices. Cremation or burial? Flowers or donations? Hymns or classical anthems? Making decisions can be difficult at a time when the family is in mourning, but the funeral director will be on hand to offer guidance and advice. If there is a funeral plan in place then the scale of the ceremony will be established in advance. Without pre-payment the funeral plans will inevitably be dictated by the budget available. In their ninth annual report on the expenses associated with dying, leading insurers Sun Life Direct say that the cost of a basic funeral in 2012 was £3,284. Jeanette Palfry believes that a visit to the funeral director when death is expected but not imminent can help relatives get the best out of a limited budget and alleviate distress when the time comes. “I didn’t want to see the funeral director before mum passed away because it felt as though we were being mercenary,” says Jeanette. “On reflection it would have helped us to find out what we needed to do at a time when our minds weren’t preoccupied by her loss.” While Jeanette acknowledges that it is difficult to make preparations that anticipate a person’s death, she feels it is important to have key information to hand in the event of a bereavement. This includes a detailed note of the individual’s funeral wishes. “I’ve learned from experience that information and forward planning can make all the difference at a time when a family is coping with grief”.

Your Legal Options For Divorce Q: My wife and I are currently separated, have been living apart and set to begin divorce proceedings. I know I won’t qualify for Legal Aid and need to know if it is really necessary to invest in a solicitor? Michael, Chandlers Ford

A: I am going to be completely honest with

you Michael. If you and your wife have only been together a few years, have no children, don’t share any property or assets, neither of you have come into any money or had any pay rises since you married, and you can both discuss the end of your marriage calmly and amicably with one another, there may be no need for a solicitor to be involved. However, in my entire career I can count the number of cases where that was the situation on the fingers of one hand! What I find most pleasing in your question is your use of the word ‘investment’, because for the vast majority of couples wishing to divorce, that is exactly what hiring a solicitor is. Initially, of course, people think of money and assets. That is pretty much the ‘headline’ most solicitors use to draw attention to their services, and it is an important part of a couple moving forward with their lives. I, myself, have just completed a case where the client received around £200,000 more than he would have done had he done it himself because the legal arguments involved in his circumstances were complicated and he did not have the knowledge or experience to present them in the best way.

Of course, he has paid me a fee for my time and expertise in helping and supporting him, but it is a tiny fraction of what he managed to protect and so he is much better off financially as a result. As well as finances, there are many issues for a lot of couples that are terribly difficult. Custody of children is often a subject that causes a lot of emotion and makes a fair and amicable resolution pretty difficult to achieve. In these circumstances, you need someone with knowledge of your rights and experience of similar cases, to impartially advise you on whether what you are either offering or being offered is fair to you, your wife, children and any other parties involved. There are also more subtle benefits to having a professional represent you. For a lot of people the reassurance and greater understanding of their situation leads to improved confidence and clarity of thought. This ensures that people don’t rush into agreeing to conditions in either the heat of the moment or the desire to ‘get things over and done with’, that they later live to regret. Once a Court has made its Order, then the divorce is done and dusted. Very rarely is there any going back. So, Michael, I know that from April people in your position will no longer be able to access Legal Aid, but I hope I have explained the main reasons why hiring a solicitor is an investment in your future and will allow you to move on with your life with confidence and peace of mind. by Catherine Maxfield

DISCOVER MONTHLY FEATURE

Time For A Spring Clean By Claudia Leaf I had invited an old school friend around for coffee and was trying hard to make a good impression. Suddenly a shaft of spring sunlight flooded my lounge, making me cringe with embarrassment. With a growing sense of shame I watched as this unforgiving shaft of light slid across the room, showing up the grubby finger marks on the door, the ring marks on my glass table and a thick layer of dust on the mantelpiece. When it finally landed at my friend’s feet, close to a dirty paw mark our dog had left on the carpet, I saw a look of alarm on her face. “I’m so sorry, I’ve just noticed. Did I do that?” I had a nanosecond to decide whether I should openly confess my domestic shortcomings or keep quiet. “Oh, don’t worry”, I replied. “It’ll brush off when it’s dry.” She left soon afterwards, still apologising. I took a deep breath and realised it was time for some spring cleaning. An article in the Manufacturer and Builder magazine of 1872 (a “practical journal of industrial progress”) describes spring cleaning as “The season of general cleaning, when all the corners and closets are overturned and hidden things are brought to light”. Whilst period dramas such as “Downton Abbey” have inspired a new generation to revive traditional kitchen skills, it’s questionable whether 21st century householders will be tempted to adopt the cleaning methods recommended by the magazine, which include black-leading grates, whitewashing walls and scalding bedsteads. The Victorians may have excelled at spring cleaning but they certainly didn’t invent it. Some historians believe that the origins of this tradition date back

60

C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61

to the ancient Persian New Year, the Iranian Norouz, which falls on the first day of spring. Iranians still practice “khooneh tekouni” – which literally translates as ‘shaking the house’ – at this time. The Jewish feast of Passover is a religious festival that also hints at a possible origin for spring cleaning. During the holiday the faithful are instructed to refrain from eating any leavened foodstuffs (‘chametz’). The Bible commands that even tiny crumbs must be removed from the house and this results in a ritual hunt for crumbs by candlelight during the evening before the holiday begins. Christianity has its own spring cleaning traditions. In Greece, householders clean everything thoroughly either before or during the first week of Lent, as a physical manifestation of Lent’s message of spiritual cleansing and renewal. For the ancient Chinese, the concept of New Year cleaning is associated with good fortune. They believed that people should sweep their floors and clean their houses to rid them of any negative influences that may have accumulated during the last twelve months. Householders then locked up the broom for a few days to prevent sweeping away any good luck that might have entered at the turn of the year. When ancient cultures share such similar traditions it’s hard to say exactly when and where the idea of ‘spring cleaning’ originated. However, it’s obvious that the urge to clear away the cobwebs of winter and prepare for the summer months is hard-wired into human DNA. Personally I believe that our seasonal enthusiasm to get busy with a mop and broom is always motivated by the same thing: it’s that accusing beam of sunlight that shows us up in front of guests.

Land Rover Freelander What is it?

Land Rover’s perennial compact SUV given a little wipe over with the flannel to freshen it up. The changes aren’t huge inside or out, but they’re enough to give it a new lease of life. The talking points on the outside are some smart new headlights, new rear tail-lights that look like dumpy red snowmen, and a more striking grille. Inside it’s had more attention with an Evoque-ess makeover.

Land Rover has given its perennial premium compact SUV a nip and tuck for 2013 – but is it enough to keep buyers interested in the off-roader? We take it for a spin in the icy wilds of snow-blown Canada. rugged Brit. All are newer than the Freelander and are tough competition to the Land Rover.

Is it any good?

What’s under the bonnet?

If you were hoping for a whole new car, you’ll be sorely disappointed. This revision is a nip and tuck at best bringing its styling into line with the other, newer models in the range. However there’s no denying that the Freelander is extremely capable off-road – some of the terrain we tackled on the launch was positively frightening and it sailed right through it.

What’s the kit like?

The revisions inside bring the Freelander up to date, but we had rather hoped they’d have done more with the exterior. The new lights are striking, but nowhere near as bold as its sister cars which is a shame, however its capability off road can’t be doubted and despite its age we still think it’s a rugged alternative to some often rather boring Germanic offerings. It’s worth a look for the ponypulling set.

There are two diesel units which are both 2.2 litres in size but with different power outputs, 147 bhp and 187 bhp, they both offer four-wheel drive. There’s also a 150PS version in two-wheel drive form, but quite why you’d opt for that we have no idea apart from its lower CO2 emissions. We tried a brilliant 2.0-litre petrol engine too on our road test in Canada, but sadly this won’t be coming to the UK. In fact, it was actually our pick of the bunch. It’s on the inside where the manufacturer has really gone to work. The centre console is new and the old Terrain Response dial has been swapped for buttons from the Evoque. A new instrument cluster has been installed which has a five inch display that offers the important details. It now has keyless go, a brilliant hitch assist that helps drivers line up their tow bar and clever voice activation. There are three new colours to choose from paint wise and the stereo system provided by Meridian is nothing short of extravagant.

Any rivals?

There are lots, and that’s the problem. Audi Q5, BMW X3, Volvo XC60 and VW Tiguan all represent very talented and capable alternatives to the

When I say I go to Rock Choir people say “Oh, I didn’t know you could sing.” Well, I can’t really although I’m not completely tone deaf but I’ve had great fun learning and just joining in. I started at Chandlers Ford Rock Choir two years ago run by Jan Moll. There was no audition or “previous experience required”, just a warm welcome. Every term we start a new menu of songs and occasionally perform publically (voluntary!) which is good fun and much appreciated by local audiences. My favourite show is held outside at Gunwharf Quay in December singing and clapping to the beat - mainly to keep warm! This year we even raised £650 singing there for the charity "Youth Options". Singing for fun is liberating and uplifting as well as a great way of making new friends. For details see advert on the left or visit www.rockchoir.com. M Tinson, Chandlers Ford.

DISCOVER SHORT STORY

Short Story The Mystery of Mill Hill There had been mysterious events up at Mill Hill in recent weeks. When neighbours Mavis and Jean met for their weekly gossip over an all-day breakfast in the Cosy Cob Café it seemed natural that this should be their main topic of conversation. “Three times it’s happened, always on a Thursday evening,” Mavis whispered conspiratorially. “Cars. Four in the first week and by last week it had gone up to seven. All of them pull up outside number thirty”. Jean listened and sipped her milky coffee. “And then men in anoraks,” Mavis mouthed the words. “They all pile in through Velma Pick’s front door.” The ladies exchanged horrified glances. “Not that I’ve been prying of course.” It was odd that Mavis claimed to detest prying when she was such an expert at it. “But I do need to check no-one’s blocking my drive in case I need the car.” Jean nodded in agreement, although she knew perfectly well that Mavis never drove her car after dark. Velma Pick was not someone either of them considered a close friend. She was always happy to help out with the WI but her Victoria sponge had lately been below par. At the last meeting she had stared dreamily out of the village hall window at the night sky and taken forever to dry the tea cups. Both ladies agreed, with the benefit of hindsight, that Velma Pick had become rather distant and secretive. Jean had some evidence of her own to share. “Last Thursday I was taking Wuffles for his walk when I saw this lanky chap with Velma. They were carrying a large case into her house.” Jean paused for dramatic effect. “I wasn’t eavesdropping, but I distinctly heard him say, ‘I’m happy for anyone to have a go on the equipment, just so long as I can supervise.’” Mavis and Jean exchanged quizzical glances. “What do you think it could be?” Jean asked. “Well, as you know,” Mavis grumbled, “without decent street lighting we’re completely in the dark.”

76

C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61

Jean did know. Recently Mavis had complained bitterly about the state of the lighting on Mill Hill. Jean was surprised that Mavis hadn’t written to the Parish Council about it yet; after all she was known for her enthusiastic letter writing campaigns. In the past year she had written to complain about the wobbly flagstone outside the Nags Head, the discoloured grout in the public lavatory and the mobile library van driver’s insinuating cough. Then Jean remembered something else. “By the time I walked back with Wuffles, they must have all been in the house. And you will never guess what happened next.” Mavis shook her head. “They turned out all the lights.” Jean had her friend’s full attention now. “But she had her patio doors open because I could hear voices.” “What were they talking about?” Mavis asked nervously. “I heard someone say it was thanks to Velma that everyone could see everything in such detail. Then I heard her giggle coquettishly like this.” Jean performed an exaggerated giggle. She had a background in amateur dramatics. Mavis had heard enough. She made up her mind to write a strong letter to the Parish Council explaining how the absence of decent street lighting was allowing Velma Pick to ruin the good reputation of Mill Hill. She might have saved herself the price of a stamp, if she’d taken the time to read the poster on the Cosy Cob notice board: ‘Interested in astronomy? Join our friendly stargazing club and see the stars from Mill Hill. Contact Velma Pick, all welcome’.

Salvation Army Fellowship Band Comes to Chandlers Ford The Solent Area fellowship Band of the Salvation Army is to play a concert in aid of youth charities supported by The Chandlersford Methodist Church. The concert will take place on Friday March 15th commencing at 7.30pm. Popular and accomplished local organist David Edwards, who was for some years resident organist at the church, will also be making an appearance. The band boasts a playing strength approaching 40 – mainly of a mature age group but interspersed with several younger instrumentalists and will play a variety of music. Included in the programme will be a tribute to Graham Hall who sadly passed away recently. Graham played with the City of Southampton [Albion] Band but his links with the Salvation Army go back many years and his family continue to be involved in the Army in the Sheffield area. Graham was an accomplished cornet player and in tribute to him the principal cornet player of the band Martyn Thomas will play a Salvation Army “standard” cornet solo – Silver Threads. Admission to the concert is free but a retiring collection will be taken in aid of the nominated charity.

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY LOCAL NEWS & VIEWS

Citizens Advice Bureau: There to help Apparently two in every five adults will use the Citizens Advice Bureau at some time or another, and yet it is surprising how little most people know about it. Yes, you can approach it with debt and benefit issues, but it is so much more than that. Last year Romsey and District Citizens Advice Bureau saw 1841 people (virtually all from the Test Valley area) with 6,289 problems between them. Around 50% of those involved debt or benefit issues. The rest included questions about such topics as employment, education, housing, relationships, legal difficulties, consumer problems, and immigration. Our volunteer advisers try to cope with any issue that is thrown at them, all on a confidential, free and impartial basis. Equally many people do not realise that we have a campaigning function. As part of a national organisation with 3,500 community locations run by 382 individual charities throughout the country, the Romsey bureau is able to feed stories into a national database. They are then collated to show how different issues affect people locally, regionally or nationwide. We use this information to fight to improve some of the policies and practices that affect people’s lives. For example, on a national basis over the last four years we have identified a tenfold increase in the number of clients seen with debts to payday lenders. These companies offer a fast but very dangerous way of borrowing money because the interest they charge can make the initial sum borrowed escalate out of all proportion. We are asking all clients

who have taken out a payday loan to take part in our year-long national online survey, We are encouraging people to report their experiences with payday lenders good and bad, and to name and shame any lenders who sidestep the industry’s own code of practice. In this way our campaign takes a responsible approach to helping both regulators and trade associations monitor what is going on and is always based on true stories about things that have happened to real people rather than being inspired by any preconceived or political ambitions. If you would like to get involved in this survey, or have any other stories to tell, or are aware of other policies that are not working please get in touch. We will treat the case totally confidentially. Your name will not get into the press, but an anonymous version may well find its way into one of our reports, sent to MPs, the government, media or a trade association, and could help to improve legislation in the future. This is a growing part of our work and our independent status, backed up by nationwide statistical recording is highly valued.

Romsey CAB is open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10.00 to 15.30 and Thursdays and Fridays from 10.00 to 13.30 for drop in callers or appointments at our bureau at 5 Abbey Walk,Romsey SO51 8JQ.
