The Chandlers Ford Directory
Local News, views, events and your comprehensive guide to the businesses serving Chandlers Ford and Hursley
Dear Neighbours As Christmas approaches the thought of going anywhere near Winchester or Southampton fills me with dread. I’m not a fan of shopping – well actually it’s not so much the buying, I just loathe queuing – so when I do go, it’s in and out as fast as I can. But inevitably when I do make the effort, shopping is all I do. However I was doing some research this month for the next in the series of Hampshire Heritage articles we’ve been running. If you’ve been following these, you’ll know that each month we focus on somewhere within easy travelling distance that has historical interest but is a bit off the beaten track. This time we are looking at Winchester City centre (page 37). Having lived within a short drive of the City for 20 years now I was a little embarrassed to find how little of the historical interest in the area I had actually visited. I’ve hardly ever deviated from the High Street or the grounds of the Cathedral. I’ve never been to the Great Hall to see the round table; I’ve not made it up to Westgate (although it’s shut at this time of the year); I’ve been to the Winchester museum, but only once and at least 7 years ago. It’s often the way that you see far more of an area as a visitor than as a local resident. Next time we are trying to think of something interesting to do at the weekend, I know where to go, although it might not appeal to my 16 year old daughter quite as much as the retail option. The Directory has some really useful advertisers from beauticians to plumbers, childcare to electricians. But there are some also some unusual businesses in our smallads section on pages 84, 85 and 91. A ladies companion, hypnotherapy, piano lessons, grave tending and clothes resale to name just a few. Till next month. Tania. Tania Houston 023 8027 6361, tania@cfdirectory.co.uk Advertising sales: Kevin Houston, 023 8027 6396, Kevin@cfdirectory.co.uk

Cycle or walk for leisure This is an 8 mile circular cycle route from The Cleveland Bay pub through Chilworth, Lords Wood, Southampton sports ground, the golf club and back. This route is a mixture of cycle paths, quite roads and a little off roading. If you prefer to walk there are instructions at the bottom for a circular route to and from the Chilworth Arms taking in much of the same route, but including the Roman Road (footpath only). For cycle map see: http://gb.mapometer. com/cycling/route_1480021. html 1) Take the George Perrett Way by the side of Tesco and join Raglan Way till you arrive at the traffic light junction with Templars Way and Castle Lane. 2) Cross the juction and follow the cycle path along Castle Lane until you see Misslebrook Lane on the LHS. Cross Castle Lane carefully and cycle to the end of Misslebrook Lane. 3) Turn left onto the A27 Chilworth Road. There is a shared cycle path on the other side of the road which you should join as soon as possible. Continue until you reach the Chilworth Arms pub which is on the corner of Manor Road. 4) Cycle down Manor Road and continue leftish onto Manor Drove which should take you over the M27 motorway. 5) Continue to the right on Manor Drove to the very end and enter Lords Wood. This bit is tricky as the paths are not labelled, but continue straight on over all junctions until you are almost at houses on the other side. The footpaths should cross over
6
a bridleway and you need to turn left onto this bridleway and follow it along the botton edge of Lords Wood until you arrive at Coxford Road. 6) Onto Coxford Road until you see on the LHS a pathway into the grounds of Southampton Sports Centre. Continue on the path and at the T junction take a left onto the main track through the sports ground. This will bend through the sports ground and eventually becomes Golf Course Road (no traffic though). This will take you up a hill. Stop at the top and take a look at the Memorial for Warrior the Horse on the LHS. 7) Just a little further is the Southamton City Golf Course club house where you can take on refreshments and enjoy the fantastic view. 8) Continue straight on which will now become a track (do not turn right on Golf course road). 9) The track will become Hadrians Way. Continue back over the M27 and on to the crossroads with Roman Road and Heatherlands Road. 10) Continue on Heatherlands Road until you reach the A27 Chilworth Road again. Turn left and use the cycle path back to the Chilworth Arms. 11) This time go straight over the A27 Chilworth Road from the pub onto Woodside. Continue down the hill and this will turn into a bridleway that returns
to Castle Lane. Be very careful at the end of the bridleway as you need to cross Castle Lane and get back onto the safe cycle track on the other side of the road. You could turn left or right to do this. I think turning left and then crossing over is the safer option. Back on the track turn right and backtrack to the Cleveland Bay. Well done. If you prefer to walk a 4 mile route: Start and end at The Chilworth Arms. View: http:// gb.mapometer.com/walking/ route_1480042.html a) Walk down Manor Road and continue leftish onto Manor Drove which should take you over the M27 motorway. b) Just over the M27 do not continue on Manor Drove, but go straight on down a track which is a walking route only. This will take you into Lords Wood and you need to follow this path straight through the woods until it rejoins Coxford Road. c) Follow instructions 6-9. d) Do not go onto Heatherlands Road, but take the left hand turn onto Roman Road which is a footpath for walkers only. e) This straight road will return you back to Manor Road. Turn right back to the Chilworth Arms. Many thanks to local resident Penny King for this piece

We all know that great hair is the best accessory you can ever have, so that’s why it’s so important to keep it in tip-top condition and looking fabulous. For most of us though, this is easier said than done.
Heavenly Hair
With so many things ‘out to get’ our hair, just keeping it frizz-free and vaguely manageable from day to day is an effort. The prospect of attaining any sort of smooth silky condition seems unlikely.
But there is hope. This winter signals the perfect time to initiate a dedicated and committed haircare routine. Investing time, patience and energy in your locks means that you can be rewarded with glossy lengths of Rapunzel-esque proportions. The main problem we all face, especially at this time of year, is the damage caused by the elements. Harsh weather conditions outside and centrally heated rooms inside sap moisture from the hair, leaving it dry, split and unsightly. But what makes it far worse is the damage caused by trying to achieve a smooth finish when we reach for the straighteners and turn up the heat. It’s a quick fix for hair now, but in the long run it’s a big problem. Regular use of styling tools weakens the hair, causing it to split and break. Applying a good quality heat protecting mist onto your lengths does help to limit damage, but the bottom line is that any intense heat isn’t a good thing. So cut back where you can. Blow-drying is undeniably essential for adding lift, volume and shape to your tresses, but unfortunately can prove to be as damaging as any other heated tool. It’s essential to dry on a cool heat setting and always allow hair to ‘towel-dry’ for as long as possible beforehand. Be extra careful with wet hair, as it’s at its weakest. Using a good quality hairbrush will ensure easy styling - particularly natural bristle brushes, as these will be extra gentle and encourage shine. Investing in quality products from your hairdresser may be expensive but will certainly have a lasting impact. It’s always best to seek professional advice on establishing a tailored product plan for your hair. Although most come with a hefty price tag, protein-rich shampoos and conditioners are excellent at re-building the structure of your hair and creating strength and shine. It’s easy to become cynical about products and it’s certainly true that a lot of money can be ...Continued on page 12

wasted on them, but find the one that’s right for you and you’ll never go back. What’s more, better products need only be used sparingly as they are packed full of rich ingredients, so they last a long time and can offer better value for money. Good health is essential for good hair. We all feel run-down at this time of year and with the annual bouts of colds and flu ready to strike, hair can become dull, lifeless and lacking in the nutrients required to look its silky and shiny best. Stocking up on vitamins, fresh fruit and vegetables, not to mention protein rich foods, lots of omega 3 and sources of iron, all go a long way to nourish the hair from the inside out. It takes around three months to see the effect of a healthy diet on your hair, but the results are fantastic and well worth the wait, so be patient. A healthy head of hair is the starting point that everyone needs to make the most of their colour, cut or style. So transform yours now and never worry about a bad hair day again. Are you listening to me? When we say “Did you hear what I said? it’s not usually because the other person didn’t hear, but more than they weren’t paying attention or taking our words seriously. It might be dismissed as a ‘man’ thing especially and something that a woman has to accept. However women can be just as guilty of not hearing. Whatever the reasons there are for not being heard and however valid these reasons are, the result is often a feeling of loneliness or under-appreciation within what might be an otherwise good relationship. Even in an otherwise happy partnership it’s not self-indulgent to expect more and doing so can enrich and further enhance our lives. When we are not heard adequately we often turn to non-verbal actions or behaviours in order to communicate our needs to those around us. It might be as obvious as banging pots and pans while

washing up which might get a reaction, or going quiet which paradoxically can often get a greater reaction than when we are trying to talk. At Wings we are running a one day workshop for couples who would like to explore the art of hearing each other better. If you feel that you already have a good relationship but would like this further enhanced through hearing each other better, contact Maryanne Steele (details in advert above). This one day workshop ‘The Art of Hearing Each Other’ is being run from 10am-4pm on Saturday 15th October. Cost ÂŁ85 a couple to include refreshments and lunch and will be held at Wings in Romsey. Thoughts for Poppy Day In a foreign field, the red poppies grow Their roots search the earth below Heads waving gently seem to say, ‘Welcome’, to a glorious day. Years ago their peace was shattered. Soldiers’ bodies, torn and battered Hit the ground, died, where they fell. Died within a living Hell. The world we live in slowly turns. Yet man it seems has yet to learn The sacrifices made years past were Given that peace would last. Peace today is fast asleep Warriors’ souls fly high and weekp. ‘What have we died for?’ they all cry. No one answers – we just pass by. B M Priday (Chandlers Ford Resident)

Working from home Solitaire Addiction Whichever IT whizz it was who decided that solitaire should come as standard with personal computers ought to be bloody well shot. Twice, if need be. And tazered first, just to drive home the message. Nothing is less conducive to putting in a morning’s solid uninterrupted work. Nothing is more destructive of productivity. It’s a horrible corrosive addiction that can devour whole swathes of precious minutes – 10 or 15 at a time, if you’re not careful, sliding by unnoticed while you and your mouse dutifully pile card upon card. Back in the office days, of course, when a line manager would occasionally pass majestically by, being caught with solitaire (or patience, as it used to be called before the US inherited the earth and all that therein is) up on the screen was a disciplinary offence, as was sending personal emails or using one’s own mobile in office hours. Now I Work From Home I am my own line manager, and I seem to have learnt a degree of defiance I could never muster when I was a humble employee. “Stop doing that and get on with some work,” I tell myself magisterially. “No,” I reply, surprising myself with my devilmay-care wilfulness. Actually, I used to play patience for hours on end in the days when cards were actual physical objects. I kidded myself that it cleared my mind and helped me wind down before going to bed. And suddenly it was half past one in the morning and I was still glued moronically to
the kitchen table laying out game after game. Now I have solitaire on my PC I make the same sort of lame excuses – “I’ve got intro-block and I need to empty my mind” is a personal favourite. When I’m on the phone I lay out a game while I’m waiting for the callee to pick up. The game is resumed when the call is finished but is all too often succeeded by another and another. What is it that is so addictive about solitaire? It’s a strange game: mechanical, repetitive, and so determined by the random fall of cards that skill and concentration can’t guarantee a win. On the other hand, you can guarantee to lose without at least a minimum of skill and concentration, so there’s a curious paradox: it’ll harm you if you don’t stay sort of awake and alert, but it won’t really help you if you do. In that sense it’s rather like some sort of production-line work: you repeat the same action over and over again, paying just enough attention to spot and head off a breakdown. And this is precisely how hypnosis works: you reduce the broadband width of your attention span until there is only one stimulus you need to respond to. The rest is a vacancy. Anyway, telling myself that I’m hypnotised is a convenient get-out: it means that I’m not really responsible for my own actions, that I’m not just a lazy slob who needs to buckle down and get on with it, and that the programmer who devised the game in the first place is the real villain who deserves to suffer for what are, after all, my own actions. It also makes me grateful that I’m a virtual computer illiterate without the basic skills to learn anything more complicated than solitaire. Because if I really got into computer games, I’d never do any work at all! by Ted Bruning

MOTORING
Good first cars PASSING your driving test is one of the best feelings in the world – but the joy of finally getting your licence can quickly disappear when it comes to finding a car. Astronomical insurance costs can put many models out of the reach of teenagers, but don’t despair too much – there are options out there. You need to accept the fact that insurance is going to cost you more than the car, but you can help cut the price by taking a Pass Plus course or asking to be added to your parents’ policy as a named driver. That will mean talking to them first though… If that sounds too challenging there are new insurance schemes that place a black box in your car to monitor your driving style and charge you accordingly – this can be a great way of cutting premiums. But what cars make sensible buys? Here, we have scoured the classifieds to hunt down a few options you may want to consider.
What cars make sensible buys?
Ford Ka – from £300
Cheap to buy, run and fix and there’s thousands on the road to choose from. Even models with air conditioning and CD players can be had for under a grand, but keep an eye out for rust under the sills, behind the bumpers and around the fuel filler cap. And buy the latest one you can afford.
Fiat Cinquecento – from £400
Made famous by TV show The Inbetweeners, this little city car wasn’t Simon’s motor of choice without good reason. It’s extremely cheap to run and insurance won’t be too painful either. Don’t expect much in the way of equipment and remember these Fiats can be a little unreliable, so budget for repairs.
Citroen C1 – from £2,700
This Citroen is the sister car of the Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo – not much changes apart from the badge. It’s good to drive and being relatively new it’s one of the safest options. However, insurance will be a bit more expensive than others and you’ll be hard pressed to find one with air con. Fuel economy will make up for the lack of equipment, but they are still pricey.
Toyota Yaris – from £750
One of the most bulletproof models if you want to avoid running repairs, a Yaris is a sensible choice. They’re roomy inside and if you can stretch to a diesel variant, trips to fuel stations will be relatively infrequent. Insurance costs are surprisingly affordable and it’s a safe option, but prices can reflect that.
Peugeot 106 – from £300
They can be picked up for next to nothing and with a choice of engines and trims to suit most budgets, a 106 is a tempting option. Most are a bit basic, but they’re entertaining to drive and reasonably affordable to insure. However, they’re not known for their reliability so try and buy one with service history and have it checked over before handing over your cash.
Finally, a couple of tips if you’re buying your first car: Always take someone with you who knows what they’re looking at, even – and don’t laugh – if that means your parents. Have the car checked over by a mechanic too – it’s often worth half an hour’s labour in a garage to save you big bills. And for more expensive cars fork out for an HPI check to ensure it’s not stolen (or ask your Gran to pay for it). Happy hunting!

Regulations Proposed for Will Writers For the past few years, I have been writing articles and voicing my concerns regarding the emergence of an increasing number of independent, unregulated companies whose business is Will-writing. I have cited examples from my own professional experience to illustrate the devastation caused to groups of friends and families by incompetence and bad practice. Thankfully, it would appear that I am not alone. The latest report published by the legal profession’s new consumer watchdog, ‘The Legal Services Consumer Panel’ or ‘LSCP’ has been in response to growing concern about the impact of the rapidly expanding number and sources of Will-writing practitioners. The report’s main recommendation was that willwriting should become a ‘reserved activity’. The LSCP recommended that all providers, including solicitors, should be obliged to satisfy a body of regulators that they are competent, follow a recognised code of conduct and allow any complaints about their service to be adjudicated by the Legal Ombudsman. Despite 82% of a recent poll of 1,000 people saying they thought training and qualifications were required before someone could become a Will writer, there no restrictions on who can be paid to draft a Will. In fact a recent survey showed that 67% of consumers wrongly believe that all Will writers are solicitors. The report uncovered evidence of poor quality Wills, high-pressure sales practices targeting those in their senior years, deceptive pricing and lost Wills when companies disappeared without
a trace. It is shocking to me that the creation of one of the most important legal documents that anyone can make has been able to evolve in this manner. Historically, it used to be that Wills were made by a solicitor. Whilst I appreciate in this day and age, no one sector can expect a monopoly on a service (and the report did uncover bad practice in law firms) the growing competition from banks, Will-writing companies and other providers has meant the activity has spread without anyone paying close attention. It is estimated that unregulated Will-writing companies prepare around 10%, of all Wills, amounting to 180,000 each year. The LSCP suggests an ‘Institute of Professional Will Writers’ and raising training standards for all practitioners, which I completely agree with. It also seeks support from the Office of Fair Trading to lead an enforcement campaign against Will-writing companies with the worst sales practices However, the report does make one observation that gives me further cause for concern. It says that in a reserved market ‘Will-writing
companies would not need to meet all the regulatory requirements places on solicitors’. This surely contradicts the LSCP’s main message? You can’t have one set of rules of lawyers and lighter ones for those outside the legal profession. In my opinion, the issue is trust and proof of competency. Yes, there should be one, agreed standard that the public recognise for all practitioners, but until then it is up to you to always ask for accreditations and accountability from the person drawing up your Will.

A Proverbial Life... Nothing ventured, nothing gained
A Star Is Born I have decided that I’m going to be famous. I’m going to be a celeb! I’ll be talked about in gossip columns, ‘papped’ on holiday in Marbella, employed to promote the latest ‘must have’ items, and generally adored by millions. I’ll wear my sunglasses indoors, carry a giant handbag and clutch a bottle of water wherever I go. I may even have my own website where, for a small subscription fee, my fans will be provided with an exclusive insight into my life, philosophy and forthcoming appearances. I’ll definitely Twitter every aspect of my daily existence, and I’ll probably enter into Twitter wars with fellow celebs - I’m looking forward to this. I will, of course, release a fitness DVD. I’m already practising my cover shot poses. For the ‘Before’ I’ll be makeup free, sad faced, slouching and pale as dishwater. In the ‘After’ shot, I’ll be transformed into a smiling, tanned, toned, glamour puss. However, you may have to wait a couple of years for the DVD as I haven’t yet employed a personal trainer (and I still have Haagen Dazs ice cream and toffee cheesecake in the freezer). I’m going to have a spot of Botox in the frown lines between my eyes, and just the teeniest bit of filler injected into my top lip. I’ve booked a spray tan and am considering waist length hair extensions. I may even have my belly button pierced...though this may also have to wait until after the
personal trainer has ‘finished’ with me. However, I’m definitely going to have at least one tattoo. No anchors, skulls or loving tributes to my parents but something classy, mysterious, profound and uplifting. It has to be in Latin and fairly short as I’m not good with needles. I’m considering ‘Nosce te ipsum’ (Google it!) at the nape of my neck. Thus, when my hair extensions are swept atop my head the world will be able to see what a cultured, educated person I am; for there, hidden under my luscious locks, is the ‘real’ me. Or perhaps I should have something in Greek? If I’ve time I may write the first instalment of my autobiography. I’m not quite sure about this yet as there are some aspects of my life that I’d prefer to remain private (the drunken rendition of The Teddy Bear’s Picnic – the shame of it). Nonetheless, I’m willing to provide a frank, honest and open account of my life that will inspire, uplift and leave my fans awestruck at my fortitude in the face of life’s adversities (as long as I have full and final editorial control). I’ll have an agent and a publicist to make bookings, deal with press enquiries and field intrusions into my private life. They will also advise on how best to maximise the opportunities that my celebrity status will present. Oh, and I’d just love to have a Personal Assistant. I’d be the nicest celebrity that they’d ever assisted. I’d make them cups of coffee, feed them cake, fuss over them and tell them to put their feet up if they looked tired... and it would be nice to have someone to chat to in the limo on airport runs. I haven’t quite decided exactly how I’m going to become a celebrity but it will probably involve reality TV. Britain’s Got Talent is likely my best bet; I just have to work out what my particular talent is. I think I may send off for the application forms soon. Don’t forget to vote for me – my celebrity depends on you! by A. O’Brien

Winchester draws visitors in their thousands at this time of year, as the Christmas shopping season gets underway. With a great atmosphere, a mix of chain and independent shops, the Christmas market and the ice skating rink, it really is a lovely place to go shopping. But Winchester is steeped in history and has so much to offer within walking distance of the High Street which doesn’t involve spending money.
Hampshire Heritage Winchester Cathedral Obviously by merit of its size, Winchester Cathedral is a big draw, and no review of the area’s heritage would be complete without at least a mention. In many cities the commercial area has developed well away from the places of interest, but the Cathedral is just behind the High Street and during December the ice skating rink and the Christmas market are sited in the grounds so the Cathedral is easy to include in a shopping visit. However as this series is about less well known heritage which is off the beaten track, we’ll move on. Winchester City Museum Also just behind the High Street is Winchester’s City Museum. The museum tells the story of the city through its extensive display of archaeological and local history collections. Starting on the top floor (there are three floors, lift available) the museum covers Winchester’s pre-historic origins, from Roman times to its development under Alfred the Great. On the second floor the city’s decline in the later Middle Ages details the creation of a new centre of government at Westminster
Round Table, Great Hall, Martin Kraft in London, the Black Death in the 14th century and the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII. On the ground floor, Winchester’s modern day role as a local shopping centre and tourist destination beginning in the 19th century is shown with Victorian and Edwardian shops. Entrance is free (donations suggested) and the museum is open all year round. St Lawrence in the Square
and St Swithun-uponKingsgate churches Unlike many attractions churches really don’t need to have their particular attractions pointed out. Any long-surviving church will be fascinating in itself and these two in Winchester are no exception. St Lawrence in the Square could easily be missed - indeed you may have walked past it without realising it. Half way up the pedestrianised High Street ...Continued on page 38

you will see the Buttercross (an attraction in its own right) and just behind is an alleyway which would take you through to the grounds of Winchester Cathedral. As you go into the alleyway, on your left is the entrance to St Lawrence in the Square. St Swithun-upon-Kingsgate is built above one of the ancient gates in the walls of Winchester. It is first mentioned from records in 1264 when it was also destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt and has been much restored over the centuries. The church can be reached by going round to the south side of The Cathedral and going through Kingsgate. Worth calling in if you are in the area, or calling to check if they are open if you are making a special trip. www. stlawrence.hampshire.org.uk The Great Hall If you walk to the top of the High Street – beyond the pedestrianised area and up to Westgate (the large grey stone arch) you will find on your left The Great Hall and Round Table. The Great Hall was originally part of Winchester Castle which dated from the reign of William the Conqueror (1066-1087). By the end of King John's reign in 1216 the castle and its royal palace needed extensive repair. Between 1222 and 1235 the Castle's hall was replaced by the building which stands today, the Castle itself having
St Swithun-upon-Kingsgate (entrance on right of picture), Christophe Finot
been demolished by Oliver Cromwell in 1646. The Hall is a tourist attraction in its own right, but the real draw is the magnificent round table, mounted vertical on one end wall. Although now known to have been constructed in the late 13th century, and painted in its present form for King Henry VIII, the table has for centuries been venerated by generations of tourists as the mysterious table of King Arthur. The table is 5.5 metres in diameter, weighing 1200kg and is constructed from English oak. Entrance is free (donations suggested) and the Hall is open all year round. The Gurkha Museum In the same general area as the Great Hall is The Gurkha
Museum. Gurkhas are Nepalese fighters who have been part of the British Army for almost 200 years. They fought in the First and Second World Wars, in Kosovo, The Falklands, Iraq and are still serving in Afghanistan. In the Second World War their numbers peaked at 112,000, and although today there are only approximately 3500, they are still highly respected soldiers. The Gurkha museum covers the history of the Gurkas involvement with the British Army, and also gives an insight into the Nepalese cultural diversity, religious beliefs, dress and customs. “It is hard to believe that November is upon us already. We have had an exceptionally busy October with a large number of tenants actively looking for properties to rent in the Chandler’s Ford area.
The buy-to-let market November 2011
by John R Caines
With interest rates still at a record low level, we are seeing growing interest from buy-tolet purchasers wishing to invest in property, rather than keeping their money in savings. On a well-presented two or three bedroom rented property in Chandler’s Ford, the return on capital is in the region of 5% plus the appreciation in the value of the property over the longer term.”
If you would like expert advice on buying-to-let, our specialist lettings team would be pleased to hear from you on 023 8027 6500. We can also put you in touch with an independent financial advisor should you wish.

According to my diary – and this seems rather improbable, so I double-checked – summertime only ended on 30 October both in Britain and the rest of Europe, which I suppose makes 1 November the second day of winter.
November Did you notice how much chillier it is all of a sudden? No, neither did I. But, more out of habit than for any practical reason, I lit the fire anyway. The habit goes back to my childhood. I grew up in an enormous draughty old house with nothing as new-fangled as central heating but with an open fire in almost every room. (A couple of the bedrooms had gas fires but they were so ancient that daring to light them would have been a leap of faith too great to risk.) And I can tell you from a lot of personal experience that in practical terms at least, open fires are more trouble than they’re worth. Only the drawing room and parlour fires were lit regularly: cleaning the grates, bringing in the kindling and coal, and laying the fires was my chore every morning from the age of about eight. It wasn’t a big chore, but having to go out into the dark damp night to refill the coalscuttles was a constant source of resentment. Bedrooms, thankfully, were unheated and freezing, since in those days we believed in warm beds in cold rooms: quilts, blankets, thick flannel pyjamas and, for the feeblest, hot water bottles supplied the place of radiators perfectly adequately. It wasn’t a big chore – certainly not as annoying as trying to wash up Sunday lunch with a hot water system that didn’t actually produce hot water; and I wouldn’t have minded it if the open fires had actually heated
the rooms they were meant to heat. But they didn’t. The house was over 150 years old, and so were its doors and windows. All the fires did was suck the cold night air through the cracks and gaps in door and window frames to create howling draughts. If you sat near enough to the fire your front would roast while your rear froze. The hearthrugs could actually be observed progressing worm-wise towards the fireplaces as the draught got underneath them. To add insult to injury, the fires also managed to deposit a fine layer of ash on every horizontal surface while covering the surrounding floors with a crunchy paving of coal dust. Not so bad on bare boards, but the ruin of any carpet. And yet I wouldn’t be without one. We don’t need one: our central heating works fine. We’re toasty, and the fire might only be lit on Christmas Day (which is also the only time of year
THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY | kevin@cfdirectory.co.uk
when the old kitchen clock is wound). Because the point about a real fire is that it is beautiful. Not only does it cast a cheery glow throughout the whole room (whether your own sitting-room or, preferably, the bar of your favourite pub), it also repays close inspection. Flames writhe and flicker; sparks fly amid loud cracks and sputters; hissing jets flare from gas pockets within the coal; logs create intriguing caves of embers that change colour as you watch; and the blaze subsides to create a hypnotic pool into which you stare entranced exactly as your caveman ancestors did millennia ago. With all this going on, who needs TV? So, open fires are difficult to clean, time-consuming to lay and have to be regularly topped up with coal and wood. They’re not that efficient at actually warming the room, but they do make it dirty. Who cares though? It’s November – buy some logs now!

I Predict A Riot Ernest & Julio Gallo. Interestingly enough, whilst the Carphone Warehouse, Currys and TK Maxx got a right pasting, Waterstones and the Jamie Oliver shop weren’t touched. So it seems that although a glass of white grenache is an essential element in the modern miscreant’s arsenal, an anniversary edition of The Unbearable Lightness Of Being and a bottle of vanilla fig balsamic vinegar are not.
I grew up in a small village on the River Thames. From an early age, my grandfather told me that if I could find a way to be paid for doing the things I loved most, I’d be happy. He was right. I count myself extremely lucky because, some years on, I am in the fortunate position of making a living as a musician and writer. These days I live in a leafy suburb of London, which in many ways isn’t that different from the village where I spent my childhood. There’s a strong sense of community here and residents take great pride in the state of their neighbourhood. At least, they do most of the time. In recent weeks, something happened in this leafy suburb that would never have happened in my cosy village on the Thames. People started rioting. Some have suggested that we, Society At Large, are to blame for this, since we have failed to instill a sense of selfworth in our nation’s youth.
I’m sure this is the case for many of the troublemakers, but certainly not all of them. Some seemed comically blasé about their involvement. I heard two young girls who’d found the time, whilst wreaking lawless havoc on the streets, to exchange pleasantries with a BBC radio presenter. Name another quintessentially British activity where the participants stop halfway through for light refreshment and a leisurely chat with the BBC...? That’s right - cricket. The police may as well have been handing out cucumber sandwiches. It’s worth mentioning too that the girls were merrily sozzled on stolen booze. And what were they drinking? White Lightning? Special Brew? No. A bottle of rosé. Is this really the kind of image that a young rioter in the prime of their malfeasance wants to project to the world? I should think it’s near impossible to rampage the streets with any sense of menace when you’re also sipping on a nice cold glass of
The prevailing sentiment during the aftermath was that a worrying percentage of our young people are growing up without hope. We teach them that Money Equals Success but then make it quite clear that they’re never going to have any because there are no jobs and if they want to go to university to make themselves more employable they’ll first need to sell all their organs to medical science. Twice. Now, my grandfather lives in Scotland and he’s had a double-hip replacement so it’s unrealistic to expect him to run around the country spreading his simple but meaningful message to all the children of Great Britain like some kind of mad Glaswegian Santa. I can, however, do my duty as a grandson and pass it on. You can, and should, pursue your dreams. And if you don’t have a dream, find one and pursue that. Take it from me, it’s actually a lot more fun than hawking plasma tellies out of your local Dixons, and you’re much less likely to end up with an ASBO. Hedge your
Boundary Marking your garden boundary with a hedge rather than a wall or fence helps to provide more gardening opportunities, plus the living boundary may also be a real boon for wildlife - so if you’re thinking garden boundaries, think hedging. Hedges are generally grown from container-grown plants (bought at any time of year) or from ‘bare root’ plants which are perfect planted at this time of year. Bare root hedging is not an option available for every type of plant and for a wider selection you should go to a specialist nursery. Plants are often quite small, but great value and soon provide you with a low-cost good looking hedge. So which should you choose? Hornbeam: This deciduous tree makes great classic hedging and in the autumn leaves turn an attractive bright yellow. It’s long-lived and is good for roosting birds. Does well in sun or part shade. Beech: A tough and hardy deciduous tree that makes a lovely hedge. Great kept neatly clipped for a formal look. Leaves turn a wonderful tan-brown towards the end of autumn and many remain until new leaves appear in springtime. Native Hedging (including hawthorn, wild rose, guilder rose, blackthorn): Perfect for a more rural look with lots of wildlife. Often available as a mixed selection of plants, and all the above planted randomly along the hedge line make a great mixed
deciduous hedge. This will provide shelter, nesting sites, nectar and food. Yew: Perfect for a more formal hedging. It’s evergreen and its narrow dark green leaves make a great backdrop for plants. Unlike most evergreen hedging, it responds well to being cut back quite hard. Avoid damp sites. Yew is one of the slower growing hedging plants. Prunus laurocerasus: Also known as the cherry laurel, it’s a large-leafed dense evergreen. It produces small, pretty white flowers and the leaves are a light, glossy green. Thuja plicata: Known as the western red cedar, the variety ‘Atrovirens’ makes a particularly good evergreen hedge. It grows reasonably rapidly and the foliage produces a gorgeous pineapple aroma when crushed. Berberis including B.darwinii: Another very dense and attractive hedge, deciduous, semi-evergreen or evergreen depending on which you choose. The flowers are small and in shades of orange and yellow. Avoid very wet soils. Euonymus japonica: A great hedging plant with evergreen leaves, many with attractive variegations bringing extra colour and interest to the boundary. Avoid a wet soil and choose a sunny or partly shaded spot. Photinia x fraseri: This evergreen shrub makes an interesting hedge. Does best
in a fertile soil with plenty of sun or part shade. Don’t forget the planting basics:
Plant container grown hedging plants nearly any time of year, avoiding very wet, cold or dry weather.
Plant bare-root hedging at any time that it is available, mainly late autumn to late winter or very early spring.
Prepare the ground by forking in bulky organic matter such as garden compost, bagged compost or well-rotted manure.
Most hedging is best planted with each plant about 45cm (18in) apart along the row. For a denser hedge plant in two staggered rows, each row about 30-45cm apart.
Don’t forget to keep the young hedge properly pruned – if left to grow it alone, it’ll rarely become good and dense. The Way I See It
Aiming for the truth Some people say nothing much happens in Chandlers Ford. It’s easy to agree, unless you were passing the Central Precinct at 10am on Thursday, 13 September 2007. It was there, at the centre of the town – by the little roundabout where Bournemouth Road, Winchester Road and Hursley Road meet – that a bullet was fired by a police marksman. There were two more rifle shots from another officer and then, at the bottom of the five steps leading down from the HSBC bank, a man lay dead. His companion, lying a few feet away, was wounded and would be dead before noon. Most years, UK police shoot dead only one or two people, so the double death in a single incident at Chandlers Ford made big headlines. The shootings followed 20 ruthless robberies masterminded by a south London career criminal, Mark Nunes. Some of the gang recruited by Nunes, 35, were old school mates for whom robbing security vans became a regular job. For 18 months they averaged a robbery a month. Police intelligence suggested
Nunes was planning a raid at the precinct. The Flying Squad positioned armed officers around HSBC and waited for the gang to arrive. Police appear to have been in a flat across the road, and some were even in the adjacent public toilets. The GS4 van pulled up on a yellow-paint hatched area alongside the bank. A security guard got out. Nunes ran from a parked car and pointed a gun at the guard’s head. The first shot rang out. Nunes fell to the ground, dead.
told in advance that they could shoot to kill. In October the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said there was no evidence of criminal action or misconduct by the marksmen, though there were “issues” around the planning of the operation. At time of writing, a double inquest is underway in Winchester, where the IPCC report will be considered.
His loaded 9mm Beretta lay on the tarmac at the foot of the steps. An accomplice, Andrew Markland, ran from the bus stop across the road and made as if to pick up the weapon when his upper torso was hit by the final two bullets.
The Nunes gang repeatedly endangered lives and terrified security staff. A man’s life appears to have been threatened when the raiders died. Nevertheless, killing by powerful agencies of the state must be monitored rigorously. Left unchecked, it can appear menacing and ultimately undermine democracy.
Sandra Gidley, the then Romsey MP whose constituency included the precinct, was criticised when she called for an open inquiry. Mrs Gidley wanted to know if officers had been
Whether or not anyone in the Flying Squad is taken to task, Mrs Gidley should not be criticised for raising concerns. As MP for Chandlers Ford, it was her job to do so. by Gordon Moore

Warm up for winter When long nights and frosty mornings make it feel as if winter is never going to end, it’s time to cosy up with a blazing fire, warm radiators or a welcoming stove. Katherine Sorrell’s ideas for overhauling your heating will help you make it through till next summer… There’s no doubt that we’re all going to be thinking carefully about how we heat our homes this coming winter – and sensible measures such as good insulation, draught excluders and thermostats will help keep both costs and CO2 emissions down. But no matter how many extra jumpers we put on, there’s bound to come a time when we can’t do without some form of home heating. And since we’ve got to pay for it, we might as well make sure that it’s as efficient and attractive as possible. First: the traditional fireplace. Many of us have one and it’s usually a focal point of a living room – despite the fact that open fires are shockingly poor heat producers, operating at around just 15-20% energy efficiency. If your fireplace as a whole is unappealing (whether or not you want to use the fire as a form of heating), you can usually update it relatively easily just by changing the surround, hearth and/ or mantelpiece: altering the colours, materials and proportions really does make a world of difference. If you haven’t got a chimney, though, the good news is that you can still have a fire. Balanced flue gas fires require a gas supply and an outside wall on which to mount the fire, while powerflue (or fan flue) gas fires have the same requirements, and also need mains electricity. No outside wall? No problem. Electric fires can be used regardless of chimneys, flues and outside walls, and can look surprisingly attractive compared to the ghastly models of old. And some gas fires use a catalytic converter to turn combustion gases into harmless carbon dioxide, so no flue is required. Because no energy is lost through the flue, they are also 100% heat-efficient. The big news in heating at the moment, however, is the wood-burning stove. In looks alone, they’re huge attention-grabbers: traditional styles have timeless appeal, while hole-in-the-wall or centrepiece versions fit wonderfully into a modern setting. And by burning wood from sustainable, local sources you’re not increasing your carbon emissions (for more information, go to www.nef.org.uk/ logpile). Last, but not least, if you’ve got central heating, don’t forget your radiators. Are they giving off enough heat for the room? You can help prevent
Westfire Uniq 15, £1,497.48 Eurostove: www.eurostove.co.uk, 01934 750500
heat loss – especially on an outside wall – by fitting tin foil (or special radiator reflectors) behind them to reflect the heat back in. But if they’re simply not effective enough then consider replacing them with a more powerful version, perhaps in a dramatic modern style or in a classic column shape. They’re not cheap, but they are both practical and good-looking, and will last you many long winters yet to come.
Dress your home for winter with layers of cosiness • Throw down a deep pile rug to add extra softness and a sense of warmth underfoot. • Swap sheer, pale, lightweight curtains or blinds for something heavier – wool, tweed, velvet, even felt, denim or mohair. • On sofas and armchairs, pile up cushions for a sense of cosy luxury and add a throw or two folded over the back: great for snuggling under. You could use a length of tweed edged with velvet ribbon, chunky knitting or crochet, fake fur or soft fleece. • Replace pale bed linen with sheets or a duvet cover in a deeper shade. Add quilts, eiderdowns, bedcovers, throws and blankets. • Feature walls may no longer be cutting edge, but they’re still good looking: paint one wall of a living room or bedroom in warm, boldly coloured emulsion – it’s easy enough to paint over again if you get bored with it. by Katherine Sorrell

Aerial Fix runners-up in national contest Husband and wife team John and Fiona Campbell of Aerial Fix, Chandler's Ford have been recognised for their excellent work and voted runners-up in the first national Best TV Installer of the Year 2011 contest. The competition was organised by the CAI (Confederation of Aerial Industries), ASTRA (owner and operator of the satellites that transmit programmes from broadcasters like Sky and Freesat) and the specialist What Satellite & Digital TV magazine. The couple won the Super Installer certificate in April and What Satellite magazine devoted a whole column to their skills in its issue that month. Then, along with the other
winners of the monthly certificate their names were put into the hat for a chance to win the ultimate tribute and become the Best TV Installer of the Year in 2011. CAI Senior Executive, Tim Jenks, said, “We’ve been hugely impressed by the level of expertise the entrants have shown and their dedication to their work is so obviously appreciated, as is demonstrated by their nominators and those who voted for them.” Aerial Fix were nominated for the Super Installer certificate by customer Susan Evans, who was delighted with the work they did for her 90-

year old mother, Mary. They went the extra mile to ensure that Mary understood the technology and telephoning Susan to keep her informed. They even returned the following day, free of charge after Mary had inadvertently pressed the wrong button. This is what Susan called 'real service'. It was their technical skills and after sales care that earned Fiona and John their runners-up accolade.

Memories Of
M y Childhood In Part One
By chance I came across the web site of the Chandlers Ford Directory and was pleased to read the information therein as I was born in Chandlers Ford nearly 80 years ago and I have many memories I would like to share with you. I think it is important that us "oldies" should record our memories whilst we are still alive so that present residents should know a little of the history of where they live. In 1937 I started school at Sherborne House School in Lakewood Road where Mrs Wise was Headmistress. I was in the form run by her daughter, Miss Dorothy Wise. The school evacuated to Somerset in 1940 but I did not go with them going instead to Kings Road School where Miss Golding was Headmistress. My form master was Mr Lush who used to punish children by hitting them across the knuckles with the narrow side of a ruler. This was painful and would not be allowed today and his pupils, including me, were afraid of him. I remember that during air raids we used to go into the shelters in the school grounds and sang songs. I had a friend
Chandlers Ford 1932 – 1950
in the class called Pat Haskell. Her father had a haulage business which he operated from his house at the top of Station Lane. I can see the house in an aerial photo taken in 1950. I wonder if Pat Haskell is still around and if she reads this she can contact me by email as I now live in Worthing, West Sussex (contact Tania for the address). I lived in Castle Lane and remember as a small boy of about 4 years old being taken by my Mother to look at the pigs on a small holding on the south side of Chestnut Avenue. On entering Chestnut Avenue from Bournemouth Road there was a Hilliers Nursery and next door there was a field where in 1937 there was a camp for the Basque children evacuated from Spain during the Civil War. Further along the road in 1940 there was a battery of Anti-Aircraft guns and when the Blitz was on I could hear the command "Fire" being given. The soldiers lived in Nissen Huts on the side of Chestnut Avenue. When I was about 4 or 5 I developed Scarlet Fever
and was sent by ambulance to the Isolation Hospital. I never knew where I was and was home-sick and couldn't eat. I now believe it was along Oakmount Avenue. In September 1940 I remember standing outside my kitchen door looking towards Eastleigh. At that very moment I saw German bombers dropping 4 bombs out of 14 on the Cunliffe-Owen aircraft factory and I can still picture in my mind these bombs falling. I read an article on The Chandlers Ford website called "Growing up in Chandlers Ford during the War". It so happens I can remember Jean Easter's Mother who lived nearly opposite me and I share her memories of the air raids and the tank testing pit in Castle Lane. I too think we were lucky to live so near the open fields which are now sadly built upon. I also remember the Water Services Inspector, Mr Rose who lived in Castle Lane and used to walk morning and evening to a manhole near Jean Easter's house to turn on/ off the water.

News from Winchester and Chandlers Ford MP Steve Brine November is birthday month in the Brine household; Emily is four this year (going on 21) and William is now one. What excitement we have in store as the much worked upon birthday and Christmas list is revealed to the bank of Mum and Dad. Since I last wrote for the CF Directory, I have visited the Southern Cross Care Home in Chandler’s Ford (where they are understandably anxious for the future) and the brilliant Caterpillar Hill Children’s Centre above Chandler’s Ford Library. I even read the morning story (pictured) which was a real home from home for me! I have also welcomed hundreds of new university students to the area at the annual ritual that is Fresher’s Fair. I have concluded my 2011 Summer Tour with a special ‘street surgery’ at the Fryern Arcade on Winchester Road. I was joined by local Borough councillors, Judith Grajewski and Godfrey Olson and we were treated to a glorious late Summer morning to chat with the good people I am so lucky to represent.
I also dropped in on a new local business recently which specialises in Sri Lankan food. Haleema and her family run Sri Lankan Cuisine from their home Pantheon Road and hold monthly supper evenings at the Forte Tea Rooms in Winchester. It was good to see the spirit of entrepreneurialism thriving in Chandler’s Ford and I wish them well. In other news; I have met with a new local organisation ‘Green Win’ to work through the detail of how together we will roll-out the Government’s Green Deal and insulate thousands of homes across our area. You
can see more about this on my website. I have visited the Winchester Samaritans, big local employer Denplan and the world famous Watercress Line. I was also really pleased recently to open the new visitor centre at Winchester Prison. You can see so much more of my work locally - and on your behalf in Westminster - at www. stevebrine.com or you can call 01962 791110. You can also see many of the above stories featured in my Winter edition of The Chandler’s Ford which will be coming through local doors throughout November.

Freecycle®
Although small items are always welcomed by the charity shops, they don’t usually take electrical goods, larger items or pieces of furniture. However you can use The Freecycle® Network (online only) to find a new home for your unwanted clutter. This worldwide initiative – with local groups - is a way of giving away goods which you may not need but are still usable by others. The listings are text only so you don’t need to worry about pictures, and people will mail you via the site if they are interested. You choose one of the replies and the goods are usually collected within 24 hours – often much more quickly so it’s a very efficient way of recycling. It’s also a good place to go if you want something, although you have to have offered something before you can place a ‘wanted’ listing. You have to register as a Yahoo user first and then you can post messages which must be in the format Offered: Short Description, Location e.g. Offered: Portable TV, Chandlers Ford http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ EastleighFreecycle/messages
