Hello Again My daughter started university back in September, and naturally the conversation when meeting new people was “what do your parents do?” She said “they run a publishing business” which was always answered with “what do they publish?”

“Free local magazines, delivered door to door”. Almost universally the next question was “if it’s free, how do they make any money?” Well in case any of you didn’t realise, we charge for advertising which aside from paying a wage, enables us to include community news, events, articles and to print and deliver the magazines. (As an aside, my daughter’s course is Economics…you’d think they’d know really).

So yes, we are a successful ‘micro’ business with just three of us working on it full-time. The Compass Magazine, which many of you might have received until recently, is no more; I haven’t received a free newspaper through the door for many years; and just outside Chandlers Ford, there’s a magazine group with some very unhappy customers and Itchen Valley r Chandlers employees, we hear. MOTORING
Mobile Motoring Madness By James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine
Is it time to introduce an enforced airplane mode for mobiles in motors?
Next time you’re sitting in a traffic jam, or waiting at the lights, take a little look around you and – especially if it’s during a dark commute home – I’m willing to wager you’ll be surrounded by countless illuminated, bowed heads of motorists checking their phones. When you’re on the motorway, try it again – these dark nights are the perfect time, because you can spot them easily, like rule-breaking beacons. They’ll be in the slow lane if they’re trying to be careful, or in the fast lane if they’re being especially reckless, faces lit up by the torch-like screens of irresponsibility. I’ve found it’s incredibly rare to take a trip with any driver these days and for them not to fiddle with their phone at least once during the journey. With music streaming services like Spotify working through car audio systems, social media streams constantly pinging away with notifications, not to mention text messages and emails, the temptation to not touch the phone is too hard for most to resist. Can you honestly say – on your children’s lives – that you’ve never touched your phone while driving? I can’t. And I’m pretty sure every single driver on the roads with a phone will say the same.
6
In fact, a recent survey backs up that theory. British Car Auctions recently quizzed 445 motorists and 95 per cent of them said they’d seen another driver using a mobile phone. Some 82 per cent of them had seen someone texting or emailing too and to make matters worse 42 per cent admitted to doing it themselves. It seems to me that the problem is getting worse, not better. The official advice is to turn it off, but the problem with that is phones have become intrinsically linked to our cars. Most modern models offer Bluetooth connectivity that lets you take calls at the wheel, stream music from your handset, while some even let you access the web from the car using your phone’s signal. While I can’t deny all these features are handy – could it be the case that car manufacturers are sending out the wrong message? Are they condoning the use of a mobile phone behind the wheel by implementing all this technology? A delve into the murky world of the world wide web and that bastion of informative reporting, The Daily Mail, reveals a report from Canada which found drivers talking on handsfree devices were ‘far more likely to make errors on the road’. And, come on, admit it, when you’re having a conversation on handsfree are you
REALLY paying attention properly? Be honest now… I contacted the Association of Chief Police Officers to ask them what would happen to a driver who had an accident while talking, perfectly legally, on a handsfree kit. A spokesman said the likelihood was that the driver would be prosecuted for driving without due care and attention or, in more extreme cases, for dangerous driving.
any mobile while driving you are four times more likely to have an accident.’ FOUR times.
And it’s already happened. One case in 2008 involved lorry driver Mervyn Richmond, 49, who had been talking to his mother for 23 minutes using Bluetooth in his cab when he ran into back of a Transit van, killing its passenger. He was jailed for four-and-a-half years for dangerous driving.
So here’s my idea. I think it’s time for a manufacturer to introduce a device that stops your phone working when the engine is on. A sort of enforced airplane mode that means no calls, texts, emails or data can be received, but music can still be played if it’s plugged in. That port could be in the glovebox, in a box that is automatically locked when the engine is running perhaps. Sounds extreme, I know, but car manufacturers have a responsibility to ensure drivers know how dangerous using handsfree is, let alone touching the phone and writing a text message.
Roger Vincent, of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, told The Daily Mail at the time: ‘When you are using
It would take a brave manufacturer to make the move, but marketed correctly it could be a winner. I actually look forward to long haul
flights knowing I won’t get a signal and can enjoy some quality time spent unshackled from my iPhone. But airlines are set to ruin that with wifi, trains are bad enough, but imagine long haul with your neighbour FaceTiming his kids. Doesn’t bear thinking about, does it? I think cars could become the soul isolation zone of the modern world. The only part of your connected life that’s unplugged, a location to enjoy some thinking time without the distraction of Facebook likes or emails from the boss; a place to simply enjoy the journey. With mobile phone use behind the wheel increasing, despite the threats of points and fines, now has to be the time to take drastic measures. But is there a car maker brave enough to make the move first? Who knows… What do you think? Tweet me @ CarDealerEd and let me know.

10 Highlights of a Holiday in Croatia Relax on the beach
View from Rozac
apartment balcon
y
Just a week or two in the unspoilt Dalmatian Coast gives you a taste of what Croatia has to offer; history, sun, sea and lots to do. If you haven’t booked your summer holiday yet here’s ten tempting reasons to choose Croatia this year.
1 Historical town of Trogir;
Wind your way round the narrow, cobbled streets, wine and dine under the palms of the “riva” in view of the super yachts berthed nearby.
2 3
Hire a speedboat for the day.
Swim in the falls of the Krk National Park.
4
Visit Split by boat from Trogir. Walk amongst the Diocletian’s Palace, set within the centre of Split itself
5 Okrug Gornji beach, Ciovo.
Be served drinks while you soak up the sun.
6 From dolphin watching to
spearfishing, bike tours and island hops to Hvar; excursions all start from Trogir so take your pick.
Krk Falls
16
7 Laganini Beach Club... heaven.
8
A day trip to Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina.
9
Ride the Cetina River in many ways; by raft, canoe, kayak, abseil or just in a wetsuit and drift downstream.
10 Relax by the pool at
Rozac, a luxury 3 bedroom apartment with two balconies, air conditioning and private pool. Located in the heart of Ciovo island, walking distance to Trogir and five minutes stroll to the beach. When’s the best time to go? Peak season is July and August so it’s bustling and weather is beautifully hot. June and September is quieter and a little cooler.
Some excursions might not operate in May and past 15 September. What’s the currency? Kuna and good value for money at current exchange rates. Do they drive on the left or right? On the right but with the network of water buses and boats you don’t need to hire a car. Rozac apartment is available for rent from May to September. Low cost flights from Gatwick and Heathrow to Split. Call Melanie Tinson on 023 8027 6396 or 07900 307636 for availability and costs. Prices from £450 per week.

Could You Help Guide Dogs? The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association is a charitable organisation founded in 1934. They breed and train guide dogs which provide life changing mobility for people who are blind and partially sighted. There are currently 4,500 working guide dog partnerships in the UK and costs £5 per day to support each working partnership. The full lifetime cost of a guide dog from birth to retirement is around £50,000. The Association is looking for people to join their local Guide Dogs Support Groups. Lots of voluntary roles are available from organising events, helping with collections to raising awareness of the work they do. The roles are very flexible and can be suited to how many hours you are able to donate. Katie Smith, local Guide Dogs representative, says “Whatever you’re interested in doing, whether you have a little or a lot of time to spare, you will be guaranteed to meet new people and have some fun! At the same time you will be raising funds to enable Guide Dogs to create the special partnerships which can change the lives of people who are blind and partially sighted.” Jean has been a fundraising volunteer since 2010, “Highlights for me are meeting guide dogs and their owners, seeing the dogs ‘in action’ and the difference they make. We may never know who we have helped, but someone, somewhere will have their lives transformed.” To find out more information, please contact Katie Smith on 07795 611 459 or email katie.smith@guidedogs.org.uk. 22

HOME & INTERIORS
Charming Country Style By Katherine Sorrell Aldemey Armchair in Design Lab Occipinti Wisteria White and Purple
Cosy, comfortable and oh-so pretty, country style has eternal appeal. Think roses winding around the porch, crackling log fires, chickens in the yard and a Victoria sponge cooling on the range cooker. As interiors expert Katherine Sorrell says, who could resist?
Monocle side table
Do you dream of escaping the rat race for a rural idyll? Moving to the country may be a fantasy for many of us, but even if you can’t actually make the move, you can evoke a charming country style in your home – wherever it may be. The aim is to create a look that appears to have evolved naturally over time. It’s a combination of farmhouse practicality, cottage cosiness and country-house comfort, where furniture, fabrics and accessories of all sorts are completely informal, yet somehow seem to work wonderfully together. Overall, choose either off-white or pastel walls, or perhaps a block-printed wallpaper, the latter featuring delicate, trailing florals or something more bold and blowsy. Tactile, natural floor coverings such as sisal, jute or coir have the right kind of honest and hard-working good looks, while rugs are warm and practical, be they oriental, Indian, Middle Eastern, rag, flat-woven or needlework. If they are even a little threadbare, don’t worry too much. With furniture, keep an eye on balance and proportion. You can put all kinds of styles together if you keep an eye on their size and scale. It might be a Georgian,
Victorian or early 20th century piece, antique, junk-shop, handme-down or home-made, but it should never look overtly modern and always be sturdy, simple and generously sized. Squashy sofas, generous armchairs, plain wooden chairs, benches and stools, and the occasional wirework or Lloyd Loom piece are all key. Add dining chairs with ladder or spindle backs, plus a scrubbed-pine table, and complement them with a large, open dresser. And some distressed paintwork here and there only enhances the overall effect. When choosing fabrics, for curtains, cushions, upholstery, bed linen and so on, don’t go overboard on co-ordination: an informal mix of gently worn patterns gives a lovely effect. Texture is as important as pattern, so opt for a combination that could include florals, tweed, ginghams, stripes, polka dots, paisley, tapestry, embroidery and textured plains such as linen, wool, velvet or mohair. For a handmade, vintage feel, include some knitting or crochet, too. In style, window treatments should be understated – perhaps a Roman blind with a decorative trim, or a pair of full-length, gathered curtains and a simple pelmet. ...Continued on page 26

As for upholstery, ensure it is well-stuffed and comfortable, employing fabric that is warm and welcoming. Piping looks smart and traditional, but the occasional frilled edging can be delightful. Complete the effect with piles of throws, blankets and cushions of all shapes and sizes. Lighting can make or break a room, and it’s worth remembering that a single central pendant is rarely the best option. To provide more variety and flexibility, add table and floor lamps to brighten corners and illuminate work areas: wrought iron, brass, turned-wood, frilly-edged glass, plaster or ceramic bases, with understated fabric or card shades, are all great choices. A few candles dotted here and there and, of course, the appealing flicker of a real fire, will really enhance the atmosphere. As for accessories, any number
26
of extra touches will transform your home into a special country retreat. For walls, it might be watercolour landscapes or botanical prints, needlepoint or cross-stitch samplers or woodblock illustrations; silver-framed family photographs might spread across shelves and mantelpieces. Wicker baskets and wooden boxes make good-looking storage solutions, while it goes without saying that chintz, blue-andwhite or spongeware crockery is just the thing for displaying on the dresser. You could make a display from cooking equipment such as jelly moulds or copper pans, or collections of natural items such as pebbles or pine cones. To finish the whole look off, arrange masses of fresh flowers in informal containers – jam jars, mugs or enamel pitchers, perhaps – to give a fresh scent of the country, whatever your location.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Chandlers Ford & Eastleigh areas and Justin is finding that his
approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve
done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

CAKE AND BAKE
Hot Cross Buns Home-made hot cross buns are easy to make so why not give them a go? Serve warm from the oven, split and spread with orange flavoured butter for the ultimate Easter treat!
Ingredients:
1. Sift the flour into a large bowl and stir in the salt, mixed
• 500g strong white plain flour, plus extra for dusting
2. Bring the milk almost to the boil in a small pan then stir
• tsp salt • 2 tsp ground mixed spice • 55g caster sugar • 1 x 7g sachet easy blend or fast action dried yeast • 300ml milk • 55g butter, cubed • 1 large egg • 150g dried mixed fruit
for the crosses and glaze • 3 tbsp plain flour • 1-2 tbsp warmed golden syrup or honey
Serves 12

spice, sugar and dried yeast. Make a well in the middle.
in the butter until melted. Leave the liquid to cool until it’s just hand hot. Pour the liquid into the well with the beaten egg and mix with a round- bladed knife to make a soft and slightly sticky dough.
3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and
knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding a little more flour if the dough is too sticky.
4. Place the dough in a clean, lightly greased bowl and cover with oiled cling film. Leave the bowl in a warm place for about 1 hour or until the dough has doubled in size.
5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and
knead in the dried fruit. Divide and shape the dough into 12 even-sized buns and place on a large greased baking sheet, leaving about 2cm space around each bun.
6. Cover loosely with oiled cling film and leave in a warm
place until the buns have risen by at least half again and are almost touching each other. This will take about 45 minutes to an hour. Preheat the oven to 220C, 200C fan, Gas Mark 7.
7. For the crosses, place the flour in a bowl and gradually
add enough cold water (about 2 tbsp) to make a thick paste. Spoon into a piping bag fitted with a small plain nozzle and pipe crosses on each of the buns. Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until risen and golden brown. Leave on the baking sheet for 5 minutes then transfer to a cooking rack. Brush with the warmed golden syrup or honey while the buns are still warm.

LIFE LIST
Fe Fi Phobia 20430
If there’s one thing guaranteed to get people rattled, it’s talking about their fears and phobias. While workshop gurus tell us to ‘face our fears’ and despite Susan Jeffers writing that we should Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway, it’s surprising the effects they can have on us. Some have official names, while others are still waiting to be categorised, and of course there is the top trump that is Phobophobia - fear of phobias. Take a deep breath and see if you recognise any of these: Bees (Apiphobia) - they can bring you out in hives. Mineral deficiency - It can leave you feeling out of salts. Laughter (Geliophobia) - which can often make you feel funny. Trendy summer holidays - they can frequently lead to hot spots. Needles (Belonephobia) - scientists are currently working on a vaccination for it. Arrows (Belosophobia) - they can leave you all aquiver. Multiple text documents - try aversion therapy. Camping (Tisantaphobia) - hard to peg down at first, but will lead to intense emotions. Examinations - these days there’s a test for it. Alcohol (Methyphobia) - sometimes this one can really lower your spirits. Cooking (Mageirocophobia) - will frequently cause a stir or a pan-ic. Dairy products - you may be able to get some cream for it. Salted meats - try not to worry because they’re working on a cure. Car journeys (Amaxophobia) - if you can avoid a breakdown you’ll find there is support out there, but it can be a long road to recovery. 40

Pension Rules are Changing: What You Need to Know By Ann Haldon
If you’re confused by drawdown, annuity, tax wrappers and pots, you are definitely not alone. It sometimes feels like politicians are being deliberately obtuse why don’t they use plain English when talking about pensions so we all know where we stand on this important issue?
Pensions are generally seen as the normal investment option when you start work. Although other choices are available, including property or stocks and shares, saving into a private pension does offer the following tax advantages: • The government pays tax relief on your payments • You’re not taxed on the money in your pension pot (up to certain limits) • At pension age you can withdraw a percentage of your pension as a tax-free lump sum But what about the State Pension – won’t that provide the income I need in retirement? State Pension rules are set to change from 2016 when a weekly flat rate will be introduced. The intention is to simplify the State Pension, making it fairer for all as well as easier for the government to administrate. These are some of the new rules, should you reach State Pension age on or after April 6th 2016: • The full pension amount will be a minimum of £148.40 per week (the actual amount to be decided upon in late 2015) • At least 10 qualifying years are needed to receive the new State Pension • The total number of qualifying years for eligibility has increased from 30 to 35 • Each individual will qualify for
44
their own pension entitlement, rather than using the joint couple’s rate • There will be no means testing for pension credit entitlement • The cap on state pensions for the self-employed will be removed Auto enrolment Auto enrolment is new legislation that obliges employers to offer eligible employees a workplace pension. The new scheme, which was introduced in October 2012, is being rolled out to include all UK employers by February 2018. Currently, if you earn a minimum annual salary of £10,000, are aged between 22 years and the State Pension age, and work under a contract of employment in the UK, you are entitled to automatic enrolment on a workplace pension. Your employer makes their contribution and you get tax relief on your pension payments. If you already make contributions to a workplace scheme meeting government requirements, you don’t need to be enrolled in a new scheme. If you don’t meet the eligibility criteria for automatic enrolment, you may still have the right to opt-in. Whether this is possible largely depends on your employer, and they do not have any obligation to make contributions in these instances.
New legislation regarding annuities Until recently, when you retired you had no other option but to use your pension fund to buy an annuity. Annuities provide you with a fixed income for life, and even though the legislation has now changed, this product may still offer the most stable income for you in retirement. The 2014 Budget saw changes to pension legislation. From 2015 you will not be forced to buy an annuity with your pension fund, but can use the money in other ways. As a general rule, people choose the ‘income drawdown’ option, an annuity, or a mixture of the two. Some finance experts advise people to buy a fixed annuity that covers projected living expenses over their remaining lifetime, spending the rest of their pension pot on products that stand a greater chance of beating inflation.
As with any financial product, you need to shop around for the best deal rather than sticking with your pension provider, who may not offer you an attractive rate. There has been some talk in the media of annuity mis-selling, so you should take the time to compare various products on the market rather than remaining ‘loyal’ to your pension company. What is income drawdown? Income drawdown is an alternative to buying an annuity. You buy stocks, shares and other investments and take a regular income by cashing them in over time, with 25% of each ‘drawdown’ being tax-free. This is viewed as being riskier than an annuity as investments can go up or down, but if you are not risk averse and you have a larger pension pot of £100,000 or more, the rewards can be greater. Income drawdown is a

complicated option with high fees and charges, and it will not be right for everybody, but there is a middle-ground that offers the security of an annuity with a little more flexibility. An investment-linked annuity There are two types of investment-linked annuity: • Unit-linked: these depend on the performance of stocks, shares and other investments • With-profits: these retain part of your return in high-performing years for use if investment performance declines Charges and fees for pension products can be high, and serve to reduce the overall value of your fund. Eric Robinson Solicitors Welcomes ‘Eric’ Hampshire Law firm, Eric Robinson Solicitors has announced the firm’s latest recruit - a wideeyed, bright blue owl. Have you met Eric the Owl? If not, then you certainly will as this character is set to become the hardest working bird across the south coast. Originally introduced to the public as part of Eric Robinson Solicitors’ 50th anniversary celebrations last year, Eric proved such a hit with the public, he has now become a full time employee. ‘It all started in 2013 when we were looking for something fun
and cute to send to clients and give out at events,’ explains Catherine. ‘We saw some handsized, owl-shaped foam models that we could have in gold for our Golden Anniversary and, since the owl has always been a sign of wisdom and knowledge, we thought it was a good fit for a law firm. We had absolutely no idea of the public reaction that would follow.’ ‘We had people asking us how much they were, parents wanting them for their children and babies giggling with excitement when handed them. We were initially surprised, but absolutely delighted as it this ‘ice-breaker’ led to an astonishing amount of worthwhile conversation.’ Over the summer, the firm ran a competition where people were asked to take Eric on holiday and take pictures at various locations. The firm received pictures of Eric on beaches across Europe and America, in front of historic monuments in cities including Rome and Vancouver and enjoying afternoon tea in Somerset. The winner sent in a picture of Eric with a train driver of the oldest train in Norway.
46
‘Eric gained incredible momentum over the year, so now he has evolved into a full time ambassador for the firm,’ says Catherine. ‘He has his own website www.erictheowl.co.uk where people can download Eric’s Top Tips on a whole range of legal issues.’ Eric made his first appearance the Daily Echo’s Business Works exhibition (pictured) but will be making appearances at events across the region throughout 2015. ‘Of course, we want Eric to be a source of fun, but in all seriousness, he is proving a great business asset to the firm. For our private clients, especially, it is about providing character, approachability and trying to aid people’s understanding of what we offer in a fresh, original and recognisable way.’ ‘Having said that, many of our corporate clients talk about and say how much they enjoy Eric. No matter what service you are using, whether you are at work or home, everyone enjoys a smile.’ To meet Eric the Owl, simply visit www.erictheowl.co.uk.

GARDENING
Facing North by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com www.pippagreenwood.com
The problem I am asked about most frequently is one that almost all of us have: “What do I do with a north-facing wall?” What everyone wants to know is what you can plant up it but more, what can you do to turn your luck around and increase the chances of your chosen plant not just surviving but also thriving.
Getting the right plant for the spot is essential and I’ve listed some great north-facing wall climbers below. But first consider whether you need year round cover (and so something evergreen) or would accept a deciduous climber that will lose its leaves but keep a framework of stems, or if you could live with an herbaceous climber that will die back each year and return again in the spring. If the wall is very shaded it may be worth reducing the shade somewhat if you can. Nearby wall-shrubs could be pruned back or overhanging trees crown lifted (the lower branches removed) or crown thinned (the crown’s density reduced). Walls may be a dark grey or brick colour but you can make the spot considerably more plant friendly if you change the colour of the wall before planting. Use of a pale-coloured masonry paint on the wall will cause light to be reflected back to the plant and make it more likely to thrive even if conditions are a bit gloomy. Consider growing more than one climber to increase the season of interest and so the amount
56
of time that the wall looks good – perhaps a climber for spring and another for summer. Flowering may be reduced if the site is gloomy and so to maximize your climber’s flower power make sure that you apply sulphate of potash as this will increase flowering potential somewhat. Follow the instructions on the pack, and generally try to apply it to the root area in late summer and then again in spring. Make sure that the climber goes in at a good distance from the wall up which it is to grow. A minimum of about 45cm (18in) should mean that it can develop a good strong root system and this will help to keep it growing well and strongly even in this rather shaded spot. Self-clinging climbers such as the climbing hydrangea or a variegated ivy can look great and help to provide at least part of the interest you’re after for your north-facing wall, but even these often need a bit of a helping hand to get them started – train the stems on to the wall and protect from wind until they get properly attached.
TOP PLANTS FOR NORTH-FACING WALLS & FENCES Akebia Quinata (the chocolate vine). Pretty pale green foliage with vanilla perfumed purple-brown flowers in late spring.
creamy white flowerheads. Lathyrus Latifolius. the everlasting pea. An herbaceous climber with small clusters of pinky purple flowers throughout the summer and in to early autumn
Berberidopsis Coralline, evergreen twining climber. Prefers acidic soil, clusters of deep red flowers in early autumn.
Lonicera x Americana, a deciduous twining climber. Classic honeysuckle flowers in yellow flushed red and with a gorgeous perfume during the summer.
Clematis, twining climber. Many smaller flowered varieties such as white flowered, rampant C. montana do well. Codonopsis Convolvulacea. A herbaceous climber with pretty bell or saucer shaped violet coloured flowers in summer.
Lonicera x Tellamanniana, a deciduous twining climber. Bright yellowy orange honeysuckle flowers in late spring and summer.
Humulus Lupulus, the hop, a twining climber. The golden leafed ‘Aurea’ will perform quite well as long as the shade is not too intense or the site windy.
Vitis coignetiae, a self-clinging, rampant climber. Renowned for its fabulous autumn colour.

The Grass Is Greener ...Or Is It? You don’t need to be a weatherman (or woman) to know that the UK isn’t blessed with the most desirable of climates. Our weather is unreliable and generally takes the middle ground in terms of heat, cold, sun, cloud, rain and snow. There’s not enough of any one to be worthy of note, except on the odd few days when it veers to an extreme - so unusual it makes headline news. Still, every cloud has a silver lining…literally! This temperate climate means we can have gorgeous gardens during the summer without having the worry of hosepipe bans and scorching heatwaves. And for most of us, the cornerstone of outdoor living is the lawn – the canvas for horticultural artistry. Even if you aren’t green fingered, it is likely that more of your garden will be given over to lawn than any other single feature. Unfortunately, if your grass looks more grazing meadow than bowling green, a beautiful space will elude you until it’s sorted. But where do you start, and what do you need?
Analysis Is your soil chalk, clay or sand? Do you have a problem with any particular types of weeds 60
and pests. Are there any bare patches and what’s causing them (e.g. pets)? Is the lawn type suitable for purpose – the finest blades aren’t going to stand up to footie with the kids.
Equipment If your lawnmower hasn’t had any maintenance in years, the blades are blunt, and the blade height is difficult to adjust, you need to choose between a service or a new model. But lawns also need scarification (removing moss and other debris) and aeration (small holes in the ground to allow air, water and nutrients to circulate) and both of these require specific tools.
Products Plenty of water of course, but no garden reaches its full potential without products to feed the growth and kill the weeds. These are relatively inexpensive and can be purchased at most DIY stores and garden centres. However, if you don’t know what you are doing, you can waste money or worse do damage; many a garden has been scorched by an over enthusiastic application of fertilizer.
Time Oh yes, that elusive element,
lack of which is the enemy of any outdoor plans. If you can’t be consistent with your maintenance, it’s hardly worth starting. It’s all very well being enthusiastic in March and April, but if you’ve lost interest by July, both time and money will be wasted.
The professionals Feeling enthused? Or overwhelmed and resigned to golden yellow thatch instead of a glorious green sward? It is possible with research, time, dedication and money to achieve great results taking the DIY route. But in reality it’s a job many just don’t enjoy doing and consequently the professional lawn treatment market has rocketed over the last few years. Most people do still like to mow their own lawns (although many even outsource that these days), but buying and storing expensive equipment and carrying out lawn work, is a job better left to those that do it all the time . With treatments typically starting at around £14 a visit (4 visits a year), you could spend more on the fuel taking you to and from the garden centre!

There is not a lot of regulation around the landscaping industry and therefore using a contractor who is happy to have their work independently reviewed is an important indicator of their confidence in delivering great quality work. 2014 was a great year for Adapt Landscapes as not only did they become a multi award winning organisation but they also incorporated and became a Limited Company. The business is growing further this year with
the Company taking on 2 new employees. James Lewis, the business owner, said “2014 was a very successful year for and I hope to continue to grow the business in 2015. Of course the support of the local people is essential to this.” Last year we reported that Adapt Landscapes were hoping to become members the Association of Professional Landscapes. We are pleased to report that they are now in the application process and hope that membership will be confirmed shortly.

HOBBIES
Get Ready for the Cycling Revolution by Kate McLelland
Graham Flavell from Dorset fondly remembers the bike he owned as teenager:
cycles up to 140 miles each week with a group of like-minded friends.
“I sold it when I learned to drive a car, but I really regretted that later.”
Graham says: “We meet twice a week and I enjoy the camaraderie of cycling with other people. It was hard when I started, but I’ve been amazed how my fitness has improved over the last six months.”
As a child growing up in the Midlands he not only used it to cycle to school, but would spend hours roaming the neighbourhood with friends, all of whom owned bikes: “I remember that in the ‘50s and ‘60s everyone who worked at the factories commuted by bicycle, so for my generation cycling was a way of life.” After university Graham moved to Dorset to take up a new job and decided to return to cycling as a way of exploring the countryside. For many years he continued to enjoy low-key, leisurely bike journeys: discovering more about the local area and enjoying the occasional family holiday on two wheels. In recent months, however, Graham’s commitment to cycling has undergone something of a revolution. He is now one of the many thousands of people in the UK for whom cycling has become a serious hobby, and he currently 66
The popularity of cycling has been enhanced by trailblazing athletes such as Sir Bradley Wiggins, who has achieved elite status as a professional cyclist on both track and road, but this new trend is also driven by health concerns: Graham admits that health is “a big topic” amongst his fellow cyclists. Sport England claims that over 2.1 million people currently cycle on a weekly basis in the UK, and in the autumn of last year the government published a draft version of its Cycling Delivery Plan for consultation, giving details of a 10-year strategy that includes the ambition to double the amount of cycling activity on Britain’s roads by the year 2025. In the Netherlands cycling has enjoyed popularity for over 100 years and even now nearly 30%
of all Dutch journeys are made by bike. The recent government consultation is one of a number of promising signs indicating that the UK is trying to catch up with its Dutch neighbours. So where do you start if you have decided to take up cycling for the first time? It really depends on what kind of cycling appeals to you. Will you be using your bike for transport, for leisure or for competition? Budget is another important factor. Not everyone can afford to buy models such as the new, lightweight carbon framed bicycles, which can cost up to £1,000. An old bike can fit the bill provided you’re not competing in the Tour de France or planning any off-road trekking, but if you’re buying second hand it’s advisable to get your bike serviced to ensure that it is roadworthy. If you’re not sure what type of bike you need - and there are a bewildering variety of models out there - a specialist cycling shop should be able to help. Alternatively Guardian journalist Helen Pidd’s book The Complete Guide to Everyday Cycling (published by Penguin) offers
a practical, illustrated guide to buying and riding a bike for the first time. Once you have bought your bicycle, you’ll need to acquire some basic skills. How to signal, how to ride in traffic, how to do an emergency stop and even how to change a tyre: these are all essential things to learn before you set out on a busy road. On the British Cycling website (www. britishcycling.org.uk) you can search for a local Bikeability course, designed to teach you the skills you need to ride confidently on today’s roads. Britain’s network of cycle lanes and paths is steadily growing, and cycling is now a much safer activity than it used to be, although urban cyclists often complain of cycle lanes being too narrow, or the layout stopping
abruptly. Rural roads offer their own challenges, but after a lifetime’s cycling along country lanes Graham Flavell says that the drivers he has met are generally respectful. However, he recalls one man who was less than happy to meet a group of cyclists: “We must have annoyed him, because he waved a tyre lever at us, threatening to ‘get us’ if he saw us again. The next day a policeman knocked at his front door, to warn him about his behaviour. When the driver asked how the officer knew about his ‘road rage’ incident, he replied: ‘Last time you saw me I wasn’t wearing a policeman’s helmet, I was on my bike’.”
anecdote shows that these days you can expect to meet anyone - from your local bobby to a millionaire pop star - getting around on two wheels. These new converts to the cycling revolution understand that cycling not only benefits their physical and mental health but also helps the environment by cutting carbon emissions. Graham agrees there are no better reasons to get on your bike!
Cycling is a great leveller and Graham’s

Cat Behaviour Why They Do The Things They Do Marking, scratching and climbing are common feline behaviours, but depending on the circumstances, may not always be welcome. Here are some of the reasons why cats behave the way they do, and what you can do about it. Marking This is often a territorial reaction to stress – maybe the fear that other cats could invade their space. Apart from providing extra love and attention, you need to make sure their eating and sleeping areas are free from other smells, and safe from intruders. Scratching This is an inherent trait in all cats, and enables them to keep their
PETS
claws sharp should they need to defend themselves. A scratching post is the best way to prevent damage to your furniture, and spraying catnip on and around it may help to distract them from chair and table legs. Scent glands in their paws also mean that they may be scratching as a way to mark their territory. Climbing It won’t be unusual to see your cat hanging from the top of a curtain when you go into a room, clinging on for dear life having got to the top and then become stuck. Their natural sense of adventure, plus the need to run off a bit of energy, makes them do things like this. You may even find them looking down on you from the top of a door. It’s usually because they feel more confident when up high, or are simply showing their fun side.

News from Chandlers Ford & Winchester MP Steve Brine During the past five years one of the key issues raised with me by constituents in Chandler’s Ford has been the menace of motorway noise. It was therefore so good to learn before Christmas our campaign had been successful to get the resurfacing work brought forward. This part of the M3 will now have a new, quieter surface laid before the end of April 2015. I have confirmation in writing from the Minister and the Highways Agency but, it’s been so long in coming, I had to see it for myself. So when the HA invited me to don a high-vis
jacket, I jumped at the chance. Standing in the middle of the M3 in the middle of the night is not an experience you have every day but it was fascinating. It was so good to actually see that worn down, noisy old surface taken away and a new quieter one put in its place between junction 13 and 12 at Chandler’s Ford. It was also a chance to thank the Highways Agency team.

New Stannah Stairlift available at Hampshire Mobility Services For people with mobility problems, stairs often are the biggest obstacle they’ll face if they want to remain in their own homes. Stair lifts are the answer for many. With engineering skill and technology advances, stairlifts are becoming more available to suit all if not most styles of staircase. There will still be limitations based on the users dimensions – that’s why it is best to seek advice face-to-face with experienced stairlift companies who can advise on an individual basis. Hampshire Mobility Services are proud to be an Authorised Stannah dealer. Stannah are known worldwide and are trusted experts in producing high quality British made stairlifts for many years to suit both straight and curved staircases. In recent weeks, they have launched their latest straight stairlifts, the model 600 Siena, to the market. With many new and enhanced features this new lifts offers more opportunities for users to have a lift where previously they may not have. As with all stairlifts they should comply with the British and European standard (BS EN), this new model 600 does. With its narrower rail profile, the lift’s track is only 6” (150mm) from the wall giving more space for the taller or a less flexible person to travel up and down the stairs. The easy folding seat and arms ensure that the staircase is left fairly unobstructed and with many
different seat styles and colours the Stairlift will blend in well with its surroundings. The seat height is adjustable on installation which will ensure that the user can mount and dismount the lift with ease or transfer to a wheelchair or to a walking frame which are the same height. Being a battery powered lift, which is constantly recharging wherever it is left on the stair case, you will still be able to use the lift for approximately 20 trips during a power outage to the property. Effortless arm controls and two wall mounted remotes mean that the lift can be used by users with hand or gripping problems. The stairlift is installed to the stair tread not the wall by four of five discrete brackets giving strength to the system allow a safe working load of up to 25stone (160kg). As standard we offer a 2 year warranty and 2 years servicing on all new Stannah stairlifts. There are many more features to this lift which you can see on our working demonstration unit, we are conveniently located in Romsey town centre next to disabled parking and Lortemore Place Car Park. Alternatively we offer a home visits, all are backed up with a free written and no obligation quotation.

BEAUTY
Spring into Summer By Kate Duggan Ah spring… time to scrabble in the loft for skirts and sleeveless dresses, pack the winter woollies away and maybe even hit the shops to see what new trends will tempt us. And, of course, it’s not just clothes that change with the seasons. Makeup follows its own fashions and this year there are a few surprises in store. The lightly bronzed skin and pearly pale eyeshadow that we’ve come to expect from spring/summer are making an appearance again, but we’re also seeing bright red lips, black eyeliner and splashes of bold colour. Tangerine is a key colour for spring this year. It can be surprisingly wearable if you stick to just a splash. Think a tangerine clutch, necklace or nail varnish. Not convinced? Apricot is a good alternative. We particularly love the new Colour Crush Nail Varnish in Apricot Kiss, by The Body Shop. It’s quick drying and a steal at £5. 74
If you haven’t already booked yourself in for a post-winter facial, now’s the time to do so. Cold winds and air conditioning are not the best combination for great looking skin. A facial can help to give you your ‘glow’ back. Keep the good work up at home, with an all over exfoliation and moisture boost. Think scrubs, oils and nourishing masks. And we mean all over. It’s easy to neglect our hands, lips and feet, so do give them the attention they deserve. Try the Mini Pamper Kit by Olivier Bonas, with its shea butter enriched hand cream and lip balm. £15 from www. oliverbonas.com Ah the joy of opening a pristine new eyeshadow palette. The Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette was on many a girl’s Christmas wish list last year, but it pretty much caused a stampede when it was launched and was out of stock in no time. And for good reason. Urban Decay just know how to do palettes. They combine colours that really work together and (unlike cheaper alternatives)
stay put from morning ‘til night. The latest offering features an array of neutral colours that work on most skintones, from shimmering baby pink to smokey-eye essentials. Thankfully, the frenzy has now died down, and you can pick up your new palette from House of Fraser for £38. It is all too easy to get stuck in a perfume rut, spritzing our ‘signature scent’ on day after day. But the more frequently we use a perfume, the less we can detect it. Spring is the perfect time to treat yourself to a new fragrance; while we crave warm, sensual fragrances in winter, the new season demands
a lighter, fresher scent. The newly released Guerlain La Petite Robe is a good contender, as it teams rose with the freshness of bergamot and just a hint of raspberry. However, if you’re looking for a real showstopper, that’s unashamedly feminine, you can’t beat Lancome La Vie Est Belle. Iris, jasmine, orange blossom and patchouli combine to create a fragrance that will get heads turning. From £45 at Debenhams.

at philip Sommereux and associates we offer two different types of whitening a home tray whitening or combination of in chairside ‘power’ whitening and tray whitening. these options depend on the results you require and it’s best to start with a consultation at the practice as everyone’s teeth are different and we can advise you on the best choice for you. although teeth whitening agents are available online or over-the-counter it is safer to use a dentist for home teeth whitening. when used unsupervised, the whitening solution or bleach may be too high in concentrate or may be excessively used and cause damage to tooth enamel. tooth sensitivity may result from teeth whitening not prepared by a dentist.

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes
Where to take my beloved for a much needed break? Tenerife for some early sun? Or how about springtime in Paris? Or maybe somewhere nearer home....? “Southport? In March? But Tom, I thought we were going to Paris?” “Did you know Southport’s Lord Street is the inspiration for the boulevards of most romantic city in the world?” “Oh, for a horrible minute I thought you meant we were going to -” “Southport, that’s right. We can take Olly on the beach. Go for a stroll along Southport Pier?” “You know how to spoil a girl, don’t you?” “Come on, grab your coat, better take an extra layer, best take an umbrella too.” “Anything else?”
“A flask of Bovril? Oh and a woolly hat.”
“Tom, as fascinating as this is, can we just get out of the rain?”
In no time at all the Mondeo Ghia was within striking distance of the classiest seaside town north of Liverpool (and south of Blackpool). I parked up on the coast road and after leaping acrobatically to catch my airborne umbrella, shouted over to Sarah.
“Here let’s go down this side alley and get our fortune told.”
“Have you got any change for the machine?” “What!? The wind, I can’t-” She shook her head, no change. No matter we could pay via mobile phone. Thirty minutes later I was in the newsagents changing a five pound note. “You can pay by mobile mate.” “Unfortunately I failed my computer programming A-level, so can I have five pound coins please?” At last, we were ready to explore. “So you see, the design of this street, with its wide thoroughfare, is just like the boulevards of Paris. It is said that Napoleon III lodged just off Lord Street, in 1834 I believe, and that gave him the idea-”
80
“I’ll tell you what Tom, you go and get your fortune told, I’m going into Russell & Bromleys.” Refusing to be dissuaded, I popped my head through the beads hanging across the door and sat down in Madame Sylvia’s bijou front parlour, with Olly sat quietly on my knee. She took my hand in hers which was of course the signal for me to start giggling. “I would say that you are quite a happy-go-lucky person. Always smiling.” “Well fancy you knowing that?” I beamed. “Now, you haven’t got a younger brother have you?” “No.” “Older sister?” “No. I have a younger sister and an older brother.” “Yes I thought so.” Well done Madame Sylvia, right on the money again! Leaving Madame Sylvia’s armed with the knowledge that my fortune was
on its way, I met Sarah coming out of the shoe shop. Eventually, we battled our way across the coast road and found our way to Southport Pier. “Tom look at it, it’s sheeting down.” “It’s OK darling worry not, we can take the train.” And there, coming into the tiny station on the shortest bit of track known to man, was a real live proper train. “Is this the right train for the end of Southport Pier?” The exhausted driver looked at me like he hadn’t heard that joke for hours.
seedy amusement arcade. We decided to sit out the storm with a restorative cuppa. Unfortunately, a stroppy little man in a hi-viz jacket and moustache barred our way. “Sorry sir, no dogs in the cafe.” We all looked down at Olly, now soaked and shivering with the cold. “It’s OK, he’s a guide dog.” The little Jobsworth’s eyes narrowed. “Well where’s his harness and tunic?” “It’s his day off.”
“Ninety pence please.”
“His day off?”
At the other end of this pile of Victorian Iron we discovered a seedy amusement arcade and tatty cafe which had been refurbished completely and replaced with, er, a tatty cafe and
“Yes. Do you wear that tunic on your day off?” “Er, no.” “Well neither does he, now excuse us.”
Visiting BARBER
After our greasy Eccles cake and stewed tea we decided to head home. I made a dash for the train but it had already gone. “Blast! What time is the next one?” “I’m not sure but I think I can see it now, you know that one there, at other end of this pier?” We returned to our Mondeo Ghia only to find a nice shiny yellow parking ticket stuck onto the windscreen. “I thought you bought one?” “I thought you paid by mobile?” And the moral of this story? When a fortune teller says it’s your lucky day to go and buy a ticket, always follow her advice.

Sherborne House School Mrs Heather Hopson-Hill, Head Teacher
Sherborne House School, Chandler’s Ford, opened on January 19th 1933 with three staff and one pupil. The school was founded by Mrs Eva Wise and her two daughters, a family of teachers who had always dreamed of owning a school. When passing a large house one day in Lakewood Road, Chandler’s Ford, they noticed it was for sale – and with help from family members, the dream became a reality! The Wise family had previously lived at Sherborne St John in Dorset and hence when choosing a name for their new school, Sherborne House sprang immediately to mind. Until 1996, Sherborne House was boys only until the end of Year 2, but in 1996, under new ownership, the school became fully co-educational. Over the decades, the school has grown in size and educational opportunity, but its friendly, family atmosphere and belief in the values of courtesy, respect and kindness, remain at its core. Sherborne House is a caring community, where staff and pupils know each other well, and learn together in a spirit of mutual trust and respect. Pastoral care has a high priority, and staff, pupils and parents work closely together, to ensure that all pupils come to school happily, 84
ready and eager to derive the maximum benefit and enjoyment from each day’s programme. The school has an enviable reputation for successfully gaining entry into a wide range of competitive secondary schools, and academic, sport and performing arts scholarships are regularly accomplished by our Year 6 children. However, high standards and outstanding results are achieved in all years, through a combination of highly qualified and dedicated staff, an ambitious and forward-thinking curriculum and high, but realistic individual targets. The over-arching aims at the core of Sherborne House is to develop confidence, independence and a real love of learning in every pupil. Our broad curriculum encompasses all aspects of a modern education, with the core subjects of mathematics and English underpinned by science, IT, modern foreign languages, humanities, music and the creative arts. A wide range of sports is offered and the school has an extensive fixtures programme, offering opportunities to represent the school and to develop teamwork and mutual trust. Regular school trips, both on a daily and residential basis are offered, and there is a wide-ranging programme of extra-
curricular activities, catering for all talents and interests. At Sherborne House we foster a happy atmosphere, where a child’s self-esteem is paramount. We expect our children to work hard, but to have great fun in doing so. We take pride in our multi-sensory teaching methods, which cater for varying individual needs and in our excellent pastoral care. The school day runs from 8.30am until 4.00pm, and there is additional supervised care available from 7.30am until 6pm in our after-school provision, where children are purposefully engaged and enjoy a wide range of activities with their friends. We are always keen to share our school, and to welcome visitors. The school is regularly open to current and prospective parents through our Open Day programme. All visitors are welcome to join classes and to experience for themselves all that Sherborne House has to offer. Our next Open Day will take place on Tuesday 17th March, 2015 with a further opportunity to visit the school on Saturday 20th June 2015. We look forward to welcoming you to our happy and successful school, and hope to meet you in the very near future.
