Tania Houston
Our front cover this month is singer-songwriter Birdy who is appearing at the Guildhall in October (we’ve bought our tickets). If you aren’t familiar with her music do have a listen to a few of her tracks – she’s on Youtube. She has a really beautiful voice, is a talented writer and has just released her third album. All that and more, and yet only 19 years old. She was born and grew up in Lymington so I’m sure doing a local performance will be exciting for her too. Talking of great singing voices, a music artist I’ve been following for about a year who I really admire is Zak Abel. My daughter and I saw him in London in June which was such an exciting performance, enhanced by bringing Paloma Faith onto the stage as his guest. The video to his latest single ‘Everybody Needs Love’ (again see YouTube) shows off his wonderful soulful voice and also his skill as a former top table tennis player. Not fair is it really? I lack both youth and talent (meaning my children had no skills to inherit either), so I’ll only ever be in the audience! On a completely different topic, at the beginning of the year I signed up with Knightwood French Tuition for lessons. I’ve been promising myself for years I’d improve my French but no matter how many courses and CDs I bought, I didn’t stick with it. But when you have a date in the diary, you have to do it and it’s definitely paying off. It’s hard, but Armelle keeps it interesting and good fun. Armelle is now doing a regular article for us on French culture which I hope you’ll enjoy. See page 59. Don’t forget that our advertisers, without whom we wouldn’t have a magazine, are working all through the summer too.

Birdy: From Lymington to London Since releasing her cover of “Skinny Love” aged just 14, Birdy has had to do a lot of growing up to do. While her contemporaries have lived normal teenage lives - studying, shopping, socialising - this extraordinarily talented 19-yearold has released three albums, toured the world, received a long list of international accolades and sold over 10.5 million records worldwide to date. Now a young adult, Birdy has flown the nest – she was born and grew up in Lymington - and moved to London. This is a big change for this softly spoken girl who is happy to admit that she is naturally shy and not an obvious candidate for a life in the
limelight. Birdy is a seasoned songwriter, having started writing at the age of 8. “Wanting to express myself that way seemed like the most natural thing,” she explains. “I would write the saddest love songs. My parents would be listening at the bottom of the stairs going ‘What is going on with her?’ Of course I never thought that this would be my job.” This year has seen the release of her third LP, Beautiful Lies, which is, she says, “about knowing yourself but also about change and how we sometimes find it hard.” Rich with emotion and frequently uplifting, Beautiful Lies
chronicles a critical period of self-discovery and newfound independence for Birdy. This isn’t merely a collection of songs. It’s the sound of a young woman stretching her wings and taking flight. Birdy is performing at The Southampton Guildhall on the 21st October as part of her nationwide tour. Front Cover Image Credit: Olivia Bee

GARDENING
Water, Water Everywhere by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com
With summer well under way, many gardens are now feeling the need for a bit more water than the rain is giving them.
It is hard to believe that not long ago all the plants were suffering due to excess rainfall and waterlogged soil. Now it is important to forget those wet winter days and concentrate on doing everything you can to keep your garden looking good, despite increased temperatures and soil that is drier by the minute. There’s no doubt that you will need to do some watering, but how can you minimise the amount you apply, make best use of what you’ve got and still have a goodlooking and productive garden? If possible, avoid making new plantings right now. It would be far better to wait until the autumn because, if planted out now, most trees, shrubs and climbers will find it harder to get properly established and are more likely to suffer serious setbacks too. However, if you do have any planting that you really can’t avoid, then make sure that you improve the soil texture before you begin. Dig and fork in plenty of garden compost, well-rotted
10
manure or other bulky organic matter so that the soil is better equipped to retain moisture. This will make sandy soil hold water more effectively but you will also find it helps to decrease the chances of clay soil cracking. It may be hard work but it will make life a lot easier for the plants, and should also mean that you have to spend far less time watering later on. It is never too late to mulch: it might be high summer but it is still well worthwhile mulching beds, borders and your vegetable plot. Mulching is often thought to be something you have to do early in the year, but provided the soil is moist when you put the mulch in place, it will still serve you well. The mulch needs to be 2” - 3” (5 - 7.5 cm) deep and you can use shredded composted bark, composted chipped bark, cocoa shells or many of the numerous pebbles, shingles and so forth which are now available. If the soil is well watered before the mulch goes on, then it will really help to keep moisture in
the soil and, as all the materials I’ve suggested will let plenty of rain through, when it does rain the plants will still benefit. Applying a good mulch will also help to keep down weeds, which will not only save you time but also prevent these thirsty plants from taking up valuable soil moisture. In drier areas of your garden, try to use plants which are particularly drought tolerant. Those with silvery or grey foliage such as the lavenders, Sedums (ice plants), rock roses (Helianthemum), rosemary and Convolvulus cneorum all tend to thrive in dry conditions, and are also more likely to do quite well if planted now, as compared to an average herbaceous or woody plant. Make sure that you make the
most of any rain that does fall by fitting a water diverter to the drain pipe which takes water from the guttering from your greenhouse, house, conservatory or garage. This can then divert the water straight into one or more water butts when it does rain. You can also fit a water diverter to the downpipe which takes water from your bath, hand basin or even the kitchen sink. Normal amounts of shampoo, bubble bath and washing up liquid should pose no threats to plants, and these detergents may help with pest problems such as greenfly. When you are watering, always make sure that you do this in the evening or extremely early in the morning, unless there’s no alternative. Watering at these times of day will drastically

reduce the amount of water lost through evaporation, and also means that there is far less chance of the foliage or flowers getting scorched - as can happen if they are wetted in bright sunlight. Where possible use a watering can or hose with a gentle nozzle attachment and water only the areas where the water is needed. If the soil is very dry before you start to water, then sprinkle the surface gently with a light drizzling of water and return again a few minutes later - you will find that the water sinks in and penetrates down to the roots much more effectively. Excessive watering on a very dry surface, particularly one which has become ‘capped’, is likely to lead to a lot of run off and hence wastage.

HOME & INTERIORS
Storage Solutions For Every Room By Katherine Sorrell
Well-designed storage makes an enormous difference to our homes, so interiors expert Katherine Sorrell takes us through some room-by-room ideas.
Cooke & Lewis Santini Gloss white fitted bathroom furniture; Cooke & Lewis at B&Q, tel. 0333 014 3098; www.diy.com 22
Hammonds Harpsden wardrobes in ivory, Hammonds Furniture, tel. 0800 021 4360; www.hammonds-uk.com.
Our homes are full of stuff, and each room requires specific solutions. You could do this yourself, plotting on graph paper where doors, windows, radiators and other furnishings will go, making use of ‘dead’ spaces such as under stairs or sloping ceilings, the alcoves either side of a chimney breast or the space below a bay window. Alternatively, interior designers can create an overall ‘look’, but should understand space planning, while architects are suited to more extensive works that involve extensions or alterations, and can help to make the most of your space. Living Rooms Often the public face of a home, the living room is where you’ll show off treasured possessions whilst concealing less attractive items, so to cope with these twin demands build in storage that includes open shelving and/or display niches as well as cupboards. A central chimney breast with alcoves either side is ideal for shelving above and cupboards below, or run a
long, low cupboard along one wall – perhaps incorporating a fireplace or TV in the centre – the top of which can serve as seating or display space. If two rooms have been knocked into one there may be space for shelving or cupboards over the central double doors, or in a small room it may be possible to fit shelving above or around the door or the windows. Halls Hallway storage is all about organisation – slimline furniture such as console tables or storage benches works well. For a variety of storage types, supplement coat hooks behind the door with shoe racks at the bottom, an umbrella hook, and a shelf at the top. Alternatively, it may be possible to build an under-stair cupboard, kitted out with hooks, shelves and racks. Bathrooms Custom-made floor and wall cabinets are ideal for storing toiletries and spare towels, keeping surfaces clear, while vanity units
with shelves, drawers and cabinets can be built around sanitaryware to cover up pipe work. Alternatively, consider free-standing options such as dressers, cupboards and chests, and wall-mounted pieces like shelves, racks and mirrored cupboards. Pipe runs can be hidden behind false walls of studwork and plasterboard, within which you can punch shallow shelves and cupboards. Do the same when building a shower wall and create niches in which to store shampoos and soaps. Bedrooms There are four ways to fit out a bedroom: use freestanding pieces that you can take with you when you move (but probably won’t be space
efficient); find a carpenter or joiner to make a bespoke room; use a fitted-furniture specialist, whose ranges often feature ingenious storage solutions; or use inexpensive, off-theshelf elements from DIY shops or storage specialists, and make it up yourself. It’s a question of working out what best suits you, your property and your pocket. Children’s Rooms Raised beds with storage underneath are great for storing clothes or toys.
Drawers should be easy to open, but with stops that prevent them from sliding right out. Use large boxes, baskets or cupboards for bigger toys, and smaller containers for things like Lego, toy soldiers and paints.
Form playroom storage, featuring Form Konnect 1x1 cubes, £10; Form floating shelves, from £5; and Form photo shelves, £10. All Form at B&Q, tel. 0333 014 3098; www.diy.com

Mould, Damp or Salt on the walls? Almost every home owner encounters damp in their home at some time in their lives, whether it be from condensation, rising from the ground, or penetrating the walls. If damp conditions remain untreated then living becomes uncomfortable, mould and salts cultivate, which in turn can create breathing and health concerns. The other major worry is how it affects the property value and saleability. Mildew, efflorescence (salts on the surface of the wall) and blistering plaster means it needs treating as soon as possible and the plaster replaced with a “breathable” alternative. BKM Mannesmann UK Ltd has a simple but technologically advanced treatment system for rising and penetrative damp. The process protects, inside or outside walls of all construction types and materials. The technology has been developed from extensive experience in Germany and is now available in your area. The BKM product ‘pico-coats’ all the pores in the material, sealing out water, but allowing the masonry to dry naturally. A microscopic polymer creates a complete hydrophobic barrier in all types of bricks and stone-work, masonry, cement and lime renders. The formulation can be pressure infused into walls and cellars creating a complete barrier and can even be installed where detected moisture is at 100%. The product is environmentally safe and, in most cases, no excavation or plastering is required, either inside or out. BKM also has an external breathable wall protection application, which seals all types of render, salt impregnated brick-work, and lime based paints. Indeed, BKM’s external wall protection is ideal for timber framed properties with lime cement render. Lime walls should be left to ‘breath’ and the BKM HP-F is perfect for protecting new or preserving lime finishes, and virtually invisible too. Untreated
Treated Treated surface creates a lotus effect and the water simply runs off due to the increased surface tension.
The State Materials Testing Institute North Rhine have certified and tested the products under strict guidelines and their endorsement is supported by every customer having a 25 year Euro Guarantee. Christian Franceschi, Regional Director says: “Our testament to the quality of our products is underwritten by a 25-year Guarantee and no other product can offer this reliability”

Your Legal Options For Divorce Q:
I agreed to my exhusband’s terms for our divorce last year to keep things amicable and straightforward. My friends keep telling me the court order is really unfair on me. Can you help me have it changed?
unusual case. Women regularly come to us asking similar questions to yours. Perhaps their former husbands had the stronger personality, perhaps it was felt they had all the power from earning and controlling the money, but so many women reach agreements to get situations over with in the short-term, and then live to regret them. Of course it isn’t just men. Many women have been able to make demands on ex-husbands using access to and custody of children as a negotiating tactic if things got difficult or nasty, and men have agreed to conditions in their divorce they later wish they hadn’t.
I would be foolish to ignore one of the main motivations of agreements such as these between couples is to avoid involving people such as myself, but I Rachel, Southampton honestly don’t know why this is the case. The fact that people No. would rather trust those they wish to divorce than experienced Sorry Rachel, but however much professionals whose job it is to I wish it weren’t, the answer look out for their best interests, is really is ‘no’. as possible. That’s it. That’s what
we do. Now that Legal Aid is being withdrawn from all cases other than those involving domestic violence and child custody, I am worried that more couples will seek to ‘save money’ by entering into agreements that later turn out to be one-sided and unfair to one of the parties. I can say that hiring legal representation is an investment in your future, I can say that we are here to protect people and guide them through the process, but I suppose people only really believe me when they are in a situation such as yours and by then, Rachel, it is too late. If agreements are made between a couple informally, then a solicitor can get involved to negotiate a change in terms and make them official, but once the Court has made its Order, that is it. Absolutely final. Game over. I am so sorry to hear of your situation, Rachel, but I am hoping that my responding to your question publicly might help others avoid suffering any injustice you might be. Yours is a very important example of how, without professional advice, the desire to keep things amicable between couples can lead to the possibility of one side being manipulated and taken advantage of. What To Consider When Hiring A Dog-Walker If you work full-time or simply need help to exercise your dog occasionally, you’ll need to look for a professional dog-walker. But how do you know that your beloved pet will be in safe hands? Here are a few things to consider: • Will your dog be walked by the same person each time? • Pet business insurance is a legal requirement for professional dog-walkers. • Will the walker need access to your home? If so, you’ll probably want to ask them for references. • They should also know how to administer first aid to the dogs if required. It’s also worth considering that if your dog has only ever experienced walks on its own with you, going out with other dogs could be threatening or upsetting. Pet business insurance It is imperative that your dog-walker has business liability insurance to cover any damage caused by your dog when they are out, or conversely, anything that happens to your pet. This is actually a legal requirement for any pet business, and should cover damage to property as well as care of the animal. If you are out at work and the dog-walker has access to the house, their insurance should also cover the loss or theft of your keys. It is a good idea to go out with your dog and a potential new walker if possible, if only to give you peace of mind that your pet will be in good hands. http://blog.petplan. co.uk/05/2015/advice/ petplan-checklist/ what-questions-shouldi-ask-my-dogwalker-insurancecredentials-safetyand-more/ By Ann Haldon

TECHNOLOGY
The Greater Outdoors The gadgets that make Summer sizzle
Let’s be optimistic and pray for a long hot summer. What gadgets can help your summer really sizzle? From making parties more entertaining to ensuring your barbecued food is full of flavour and not food poisoning, gadgets are here to help you make the most of every second of summer. One of the big trends this year is solar power - not because Britain has suddenly got sunnier, but because the combination of more efficient solar technology and lowpower technology such as LED lights means solar gadgets work properly, even when it’s a bit dull. You’ll have seen endless solar lights and spotlights, but how about solarpowered water fountains, bird baths or other water features? You can spend from around £50 to several hundred pounds depending on how complex the feature is and what it’s made of: cheap ones tend to be made of resin, while natural stone takes you into the hundreds. Solar power is also very good for charging phones, which is handy if you’ve embraced streaming music and use your smartphone to play sounds in the garden. It pays to shop around: for example the PowerBee Executive charger, which has an RRP of £39.99, is widely available for as little 40
as £13.99. While you’re at it, you could buy yourself a solar powered wireless speaker too: the Gemtune Kinna speaker is £40, while the larger and longer range Jabadoo wireless outdoor solar speaker is £99. Even if you don’t go solar, a wireless speaker is an excellent investment for summertime sounds, as it means you don’t need to keep your music close to a power point. For many of us summer means outdoor cooking, and of course there are plenty of products designed just for us. The Looftlighter (£48) and BBQ Dragon (£46) use super-heated air to get your barbecue started quickly, while the iGrill Mini (£43) is a Bluetooth thermometer that tells your phone when your food is ready. If money’s no object, the SmartGrill offers voice control, recipe apps and notifications on your phone or tablet. The bad news: the smallest one is around £1,400 and the most expensive model, the 42-inch, is nearly £7,000. Gadgets aren’t just about grilling, and they don’t all
PowerBee Executive solar mobile/ tablet charger
require a second mortgage either. Automatic wine coolers cost from around £50 and can chill a bottle of white wine in less than 10 minutes, while the lower-tech bottle wraps sit in the fridge until you need them, chill bottles in around 15 minutes and cost £9.99. Beer drinkers can join in too: the Xcellent Global Beer Chiller Chilling Sticks, stainless steel rods you freeze and then stick in your beer bottles, are £9.99 for two. The chillers work in some soft drink bottles too. We started off with optimism, but let’s add some realism too: the British weather being what it is, it’s a good idea to have early warning of incoming bad weather. An outdoor weather station provides just that, and you can choose from traditional clock designs with integrated barometers and thermometers from around £25 or go high-tech with a wireless weather station, which can cost from around £25 to several hundred pounds depending on the features you want to have. Or you could always go on Amazon and buy the Amscan PPP GB Umbrella Hat, which offers the protection of an umbrella with the handsfree convenience of a hat for just £2.99.

The beautiful, historic high street of Stockbridge becomes abuzz with activity, with live music filling the air, Juggling Jake entertaining the children with his circus skills and the countryside coming to the high street in the form of farm animals, vintage agricultural equipment, craft demonstrations and the many stalls promoting and selling local fayre.

Civic Offices Development Gets Go Ahead The development of the old civic offices site on Leigh Road has been given the ‘go ahead’ following a recent meeting of Eastleigh Local Area Committee. The committee resolved to approve an outline planning application for the range of uses that the Council considers appropriate for the site although it does not identify any specific business operators.

The potential uses identified in the application include a car dealership, commercial offices and fast food outlets. This approval is subject to highways works along Leigh Road relating to the proposed food outlets on the site being agreed. Chair of Eastleigh Local Area Committee Cllr Paul Bicknell said, “This exciting development provides an ideal location for additional employment land for new businesses with the creation of jobs and opportunities for local people.” He added, “The Council retains ownership of the site and the business premises will add to the council’s property portfolio that provides a significant rental income to the Council thus helping to keep council tax low, without cutting services, for everyone in the borough" The Council will expect to receive detailed applications for the different elements of the site in the near future, that will establish the specific nature of the final scheme.

Comfort, Heat Protection, Security and Style: Why you should use Glass Film Conservatories People spend thousands of pounds on a new conservatory, only to find that it gets too hot and uncomfortable to use during the summer months. But there is a solution: solar control window film reduces the direct heat and glare from the sun by up to 80%. At about a third of the cost of roof blinds – and considerably easier to keep clean - window film is a more efficient and cost effective solution. Solar film is suitable for both glass and polycarbonate roofs. Sun Damage Solar control film is a very effective way of protecting your floors and fabrics against the damaging effects of the sun. Ultra violet light is the main culprit, so by filtering it out, the fading process will be slowed down considerably. Heat and natural light are also a factor, so for increased protection, various levels of tint are available to suit every situation. Safety and Security Specialist films will strengthen
your glass and hold it together in case of impact. An application of clear safety film will bring any older glass in your home up to European standards whilst security film reinforces your glazing in case of intruders. Both films are designed to give you piece of mind knowing that your home is safe. Privacy If privacy is an issue, then then it’s worth considering silver reflective film that gives a ‘one way effect’ or frosted film that allows plenty of light to pass through whilst maintaining your modesty! Or for a more elegant solution, you could choose a decorative window film adding colour, vibrancy and privacy to your room. A modern alternative to net curtains. Oakmount Installations offers a supply and fit service for all these applications, with 15 years of experience. Conservatory Roof Film: wish I’d done it years ago! Tania Houston, Editor Our house was built with a small conservatory at the back. For the whole 18 years we’ve lived there, that room has been almost unusable from April to September – it’s too hot, and it’s too bright. I’d considered roof blinds in the past, but insects and dust love conservatories and it’s not easy cleaning blinds at roof height. So when I saw Oakmount 46
Installations advertising roof film to reduce heat and light, I booked straight away. I love the finished result. There’s still plenty of light coming into the room (the picture of the work in progress makes it look much darker than it is) but when the sun is out, the light level is more

like a cloudy day. We’ve had a couple of warm spells since April and I really noticed such a difference. Not only is the room more usable, but there’s less heat going into the rest of the house. Highly recommended!

HOBBIES
A Hobby That’s Written In The Stars By Kate McLelland
We’ve all done it: taken a sneaky peek at the weekly horoscope column in our local newspaper or favourite magazine to see what lies in store for us. But the forecast is usually so general it could almost apply to anyone, in any situation. Even if it did apply to everyone born under your star sign, that means one-twelfth of the human race is sharing broadly the same experience as you. However when you look at astrology’s history – going back over thousands of years - you’ve got to wonder whether we should dismiss it quite so lightly? In the west, astrology as we know it today began in the second century AD although this system was a continuation of ancient Greek and Babylonian traditions. The problem with popular astrology is that it isn’t true astrology at all. The horoscope column that appears in your newspaper is based on the position of the sun at the date of your birth. It may be fun to read, but this narrow focus is like watching your television through a rolled up tube of cardboard. 48
True astrology is based on not one, but three personal facts: the date when you were born, the place where you were born and the precise time of your birth. Using this data, an astrologer will create a unique personal chart that takes into account the position of the planets in our solar system and the relationship between them (calculated through mathematical angles). The astrologer will also look at planetary positions across the twelve ‘Houses’ (wedge-shaped sections of your chart created by the ‘Rising sign’ on the horizon at the time of your birth) and the way important planets behave in each particular star sign. The result is a personal horoscope (or ‘natal chart’), from which an astrologer can interpret information about your personality. The chart also forms the basis for ‘predictive astrology’: the art of predicting future influences and events based on the data in your birth chart (however it’s worth pointing out here that nothing is absolutely certain when it comes to astrological predictions: this method can only show the likely direction of travel, not the actual destination). If you are eager to learn more about astrology, then a short course will help you
familiarise yourself with the basic principles. The Faculty of Astrological Studies (www. astrology.org.uk) runs distance learning courses as well courses in London and a summer school in Oxford (a Foundation course costs £800 in total). Alternatively the Mayo School of Astrology (www.mayoastrology. com), established in 1973, offers a Basic Certificate Course costing around £600. If this sounds expensive, you’ll find plenty of information online. Start with Astro Dienst (www. astro.com) or Café Astrology (www.cafeastrology.com) where you can calculate and print off your own natal chart, free of charge. Given astrology’s popularity, it’s not surprising to find there are literally hundreds of books on the subject and the Café Astrology website has published a ‘Guide to Astrology Books’ together with useful notes and links to Amazon. Alternatively you could ask your local library if they have any books for beginners. Astrology is a fascinating subject, but be warned: once your friends and acquaintances learn about your new skill, you won’t need an astrologer to predict how your future spare time will be spent!

INTERVIEW
ABC
34 years after ABC’s the Lexicon Of Love was released, frontman Martin Fry is back with the sequel, Lexicon Of Love II. The Breeze’s Mark Franklin caught up with him. I love the story about why you decided to make this album and I’d like you to tell it if you wouldn’t mind? The Lexicon Of Love was our debut album with ‘The Look Of Love’ and ‘Poison Arrow’ on it and ABC has made many albums over the years. I was playing a show at the Albert Hall in London with Anne Dudley conducting the orchestra and we were doing orchestral versions of The Lexicon Of Love. It was such a magical night – I was looking into the audience and did start to think ‘wouldn’t it be good to do a follow-up’. Then I started thinking how I love sequels. I had a couple of songs that I’d written which we slipped into the set the next time we played, and they went down a storm. I kind of thought, The Lexicon Of Love II would be unapologetically ABC and I could make it very big, orchestral and lavish without any guilt whatsoever. It’s a 56
record about today but one that doffs its cap to the old days. Were you consciously trying to sonically have it almost compare to the original – or were you trying to move it away? Sonically, I didn’t want to go back to the minutiae of a Yamaha DX-7 keyboard from 1983 and try to recreate that but I did want to reference the original album and take it forwards. The editing and sampling are things you can do on a laptop today and I figured it would be great to get a real orchestra, and a real drum kit, and a real bass guitar and cut them all up – today I think that is what most people do. Although not everybody has real strings so as a sort of pre-condition, I felt it had to be more orchestral. The first single is Viva Love. It’s a massive powerhouse of a song. Just tell me about that. With Viva Love, I wanted to capture the feeling you get when you get up in the morning and feel that life is full of possibilities – that is often the feeling you get when you’re in love – but I wanted to capture some of the euphoria and the ecstasy. It would be remiss of me not to look at your back catalogue. For example, ‘Be Near Me’ - love that song!
Yeah it’s our biggest seller and it’s a song we rarely play in the UK. But in America, it’s the encore song. It came out of an album called ‘How To Be A Zillionaire’ and at that point in our career, we decided to become cartoon characters. We decided to be like Hanna Barbera! It’s a very romantic song but in an electronic setting. Mark: Poison Arrow? It’s a pretty spiteful song, really! “Who broke my heart, you did, you did” - I can’t really count the number of times I’ve pointed deep into the heart of the audience on that moment but now they all point back at me! It’s pretty heartful and anguished, but love is a many splintered thing!

Culture
With the good local ferry links from Portsmouth and Poole and easy access to the French coast, France is a popular holiday destination for many of us, whether for a short weekend getaway or a longer family holiday further afield. As a native from Brittany, whenever I am back in France, I always enjoy visiting and strolling around the local outdoor markets. Almost all towns and villages hold a traditional weekly market where farmers sell fresh (and sometimes local) produce including fruit, vegetables, meats, fish, cheeses, delicatessen and other artisanal products such as crafts, textiles and flowers. Usually held in the village square (“la place”) the traditional market is a vibrant fusion of colour, fragrance , tastes and bustling commerce, where many of the local inhabitants come to buy their weekly groceries, catch up with friends or family and enjoy the convivial friendly atmosphere. For cheeses and charcuterie, you can often try “un morceau” (sample) to discover a new taste. Note that the market can be any day of the week, not just on the weekend, allowing the merchants to rotate between different markets in the surrounding region. The place, time and date for the market is usually displayed at “la mairie”, the “l’office de tourisme” and in local publications. Armelle Rudman

And Another Thing... Tom Spoils A Good Walk by Tom Hughes From the other end of the Sunday breakfast table, my Dearly Beloved stared at me in disbelief. “Tom, what on earth are you wearing?” Sporting my Pringle jumper, Farah slacks and Michael Jackson glove I replied, “What does it look like? I’m off to spoil a good walk. Nigel has asked to make up a four-ball.” “Does he know you can’t play?” “Rubbish, I made par at Royal Birkdale.” “You mean you beat Evan and Hannah at crazy golf on Southport pier? Well off you go then!” After squeezing the Mondeo Ghia between two shiny Germanic tanks, I breezed into the club house to be greeted by Nigel with Simon and Chris - two tall chaps clad from head to foot in Ping and Nike. “Tom! Ready for a spot of match play?” “Sure! Where do I go to rent some bats?” After kitting myself out with a half-set from the club shop, we strolled onto the first tee. 60
With the dew glistening on the immaculate fairway, I squinted at the flag fluttering gently in the mid-morning mist. With the pines swaying imperiously to my right, the club house nestled serenely on my left, surely this was golfing Nirvana. As agreed, Simon had first dibs at the green. A suggestive wiggle of his haunches then - thwack! His small white missile was sent into a perfect trajectory towards the hole. Nigel was up next, and proceeded to hook his effort into the light rough. Third to tee off was the debonair Chris, who effortlessly located the fairway. Soon it was all eyes on me. After dithering over my weapon of choice, a clearing of throats told me that my procrastination was getting on everyone’s wick. There was only one thing for it - death or glory. It was time to deploy the heavy artillery. “The driver, Tom? Feeling brave?” I blew out my cheeks and narrowed my eyes. After a quick check on the position of my target, I pulled back my mighty masher and let fly. Immediately after my swing I was up on one leg, leaning forward to check the
progress of my effort. “Can you see it?” I glanced hopefully at Nigel who grimaced and then pointed at my feet. I looked down to see my ball still sitting happily on the tee, awaiting further instructions. Without skipping a beat I spat on my hands and announced, “Okay, enough practice swings - let’s get off the mark.” Like a coiled spring I unwound my twisted torso and whoosh…into the air she went, arcing beautifully into the sky. Unfortunately the item in the stratosphere wasn’t the ball - it was my club. With all the dignity I could muster, I trudged off to retrieve my equipment. After my fellow golfers were back up off the ground, I decided to follow Nigel’s advice: “Tom, why don’t you play it safe with a three-iron?” And so we slogged onwards. Finally, as dusk began to fall, we reached the eighteenth, by which time Simon and Chris, not unreasonably, had had quite enough. And then it happened. On the final fairway I took a battered seven iron and swung it in the general direction of the pin. Thwack! I connected
perfectly and up went my ball - a pure golf shot, rising gracefully skywards before plopping down gently onto the green…then - a hop, a skip…and unbelievably, in she rolled! “Did you see that? Did you see that!?” Nigel put his head in his hands as Chris turned to Simon and sighed, “How I pity his poor wife.” Back home I rushed upstairs and started rummaging in the back bedroom as Sarah called out, “Tom where have you been? It doesn’t take that long to play, surely?” “Well it does right now, but as I practice more and more I’ll go round quicker! Here they are!” “Listen, if you think I’m staying at home every Sunday while you cut sods out of the fairway, you can bog off! And take off Granddad’s plus fours, you look ridiculous. Now go and set the table.” And so, as I miserably decanted the Merlot, I wondered if Tiger Woods ever had as much trouble getting out the house. Follow Tom @groomsdaybook groomsdaybook.com

What is a Dental Implant? a dental implant is an artificial replacement for a tooth root, usually made from titanium. there are many different implant systems available and when competently used they all deliver a highly reliable form of treatment. the main aim during the placement of any implant is to achieve immediate close contact with the surrounding bone. over time further growth of bone onto the implant surface enhances the stability of the implant. Frequently AskeD questIons Will I be able to eat what I like afterwards? Once completed, patients should be able to eat a normal, healthy diet with little or no difficulty. What Costs are involved in implant treatment? The cost can vary, depending on the degree and extent of treatment required. The full cost is therefore explained and confirmed in a written treatment plan from your implant dentist.
How long will it take? Implant treatment usually requires a number of appointments over a period of months. In some cases, however, implant work can be completed in a much shorter period. How long will it last? Once treatment s completed a regular routine of dental hygiene and regular check-ups should ensure that implants last for many years. Am I too old for implant treatment? There is no upper age limit for patients to undergo implant treatment, provided they continue to enjoy reasonably good health. Is the treatment painful? Patients are often surprised at how little discomfort they experience during and after implant procedures.

BEAUTY
Summer Lovin’ By Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk
It’s been a very long time coming, but summer is finally here. I’ve dusted off the sunnies and dug out my sandals, but couldn’t resist investing in a few new goodies…
Paul Mitchell’s Super Strong System
A new lip gloss is always on my summer shopping list. This year I’ve gone for Neal’s Yard’s organic Lip Gloss in Fig, £9.50. It’s rich in seed and fruit oils, so nourishes lips while giving them a decent burst of colour. It’s easy to apply and also has a subtle orange flavour and scent. Being a gloss, the colour doesn’t last that long, but it does leave my lips feeling moisturised. Next on my list is a new makeup palette. I like one that I can keep in my bag then whip out when there’s talk of cocktails. Marks and Spencer’s Autograph Face Palette ticks all the boxes. There are nine eyeshadows, two blushers and four highlighters, so it can take my look from day to night
with ease. What’s more, it’s housed in a cute metallic clutch bag, which you can detach from the palette and use on its own. A bargain at just £15. Now I am not normally a fan of nettles. I seem to be forever getting stung by them when retrieving a football out of the long grass or trailing after my dog through the woods. But they do have some good qualities. Nettles are packed with amino acids and proteins, so can help to strengthen your hair. You can make an effective hair rinse by steeping leaves in hot water, but if that sounds like a bit too much effort, try Paul Mitchell’s Super Strong System. This three-step hair care range uses nettles and other botanical ingredients ...Continued on page 66

I am incredibly lazy when it comes to body lotion, so don’t tend to use it as much as I should when I’m covered up in the winter. So once summer hits, my legs are a bit of a sorry sight. I’ve been tackling them with daily exfoliation, followed by Believa’s Natural Intensiv Body Lotion, £23.99. It’s packed with argan oil, aloe vera, jojoba and shea butter, so is incredibly moisturising. Thankfully it’s also easily absorbed, as I’m usually running late for the school run. Natural Intensiv is very gentle, so is suitable

VITAL
British fragrance house Atkinsons is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. To celebrate, and mark the Queen’s 90th birthday year, it has launched a new perfume, Oud Save the Queen. Inspired by the Orient, this fragrance is bursting with spicy, exotic notes, including bergamot, jasmine, orange blossom and, of course, oud. However, there are also notes of the quintessentially British Earl Grey tea. This fragrance is on my wish list, rather than shopping list, unfortunately, as it’s an eye watering £150. RECIPE
Summer Pudding Serves 6 - 8 Ready in 1 hour, plus overnight chilling time This is a classic summer British dessert made with just a few simple ingredients. Make the day before serving to allow plenty of time for the sweet berry juices to soften the bread. Serve with softly whipped cream, Greek style yoghurt or tangy crème fraiche.
Ingredients: • 275g small strawberries, hulled and halved • 275g raspberries • 175g blueberries • 100g black or red currants, removed from stalks • 175g caster sugar • 10 large slices medium-sliced white bread (preferably one day old) • 1 whole strawberry, to decorate
TIP Take care not to overcook the fruit in step one. All the berries should be just softened but still holding their shape. 74
1. Place all the fruit in a large saucepan with the sugar and 3 tbsp cold water. Heat gently, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved. Simmer gently for 2-3 minutes until the juices begin to run. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside.
2. Cut away the crusts from the slices of bread. Cut a round of bread from one slice to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the rest of the slices in half lengthways.
3. Strain off some of the juice from the fruit into a shallow dish. Line the pudding basin with cling film, allowing it to overhang the sides. Dip the round of bread in the strained juice and use to line the base of the basin. Use most of the slices to line around the sides of the basin, dipping each one in the juice and overlapping the slices as you go, so there are no gaps.
4. Use a slotted spoon to spoon all the fruits into the bread-lined basin, pressing down gently. Cover completely with the rest of the bread slices, trimming them to fit as necessary.
5. Spoon over a little of the remaining juice then cover with a saucer that fits just inside the top of the basin and weigh down with weights or food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. Reserve the remaining juice.
6. To serve, remove the weights and invert the pudding onto a lipped plate. Remove the cling film. Pour over the reserved juices and decorate with a fresh strawberry.

The Life List Design A Dog Growing up, there were two sorts of dogs - pedigrees (which no one could afford) and mongrels (a cheap and cheerful biological lucky dip). Now the classified ads offer all manner of designer crosses, and at prices that will make you cross-eyed. I’m no caninologist but it seems to me that we could be more creative with our doggy combinations. Forget your Cockapoo and your Labradoodle, let’s have some fun with this. Here’s the science part! A cross between: A Water Spaniel and a Bedlington Terrier: Water Bed. Perfect if a good swimmer floats your boat. A Great Dane and a Scottish Terrier: Great Scot. Can’t abide bad language and often surprises its owner. A Mexican Hairless and a Bearded Collie: Hairless Beard. Very popular with political students and young hipsters. An Otter Hound and a Manchester Terrier: Otterman. Naturally tidy and knows its place. A Pit Bull and an Akita: Pitta. They’re easily bred. A Pit Bull, an Akita and a Dachshund: Sausage Sandwich. Doesn’t go well with a Chow Chow. A Bloodhound and a Borzoi: a Bloody Bor. Not very socialised and an absolute menace at parties. A Polish Hound and a Finnish Spitz: Spit and Polish. Easy to maintain, and has a very shiny nose. A Saluki and a Malamute: Salute. Popular with the military. An Azawakh and a Poodle: Azapoo. May need extra toilet training. A Toy Poodle and a Boxer: Toy Box. Great with small children and very playful. An Airedale and a Bedlington Terrier: Air Bed. Prices may be inflated. Don’t be misled when buying your new kitchen Quality
. Convenience . Choice . Service
You’ve all seen the advertisements for ½ price kitchens, free appliances and all the extra “Bells and Whistles” some companies offer. Well don’t believe everything you see, as they say… If it’s too good to be true then it probably isn’t true! And that’s because the installation costs they charge can almost double the price of your kitchen. We at Ashmore Kitchens, being a small independent family run business, do not make such claims, nor do we charge extortionate prices to install your kitchen. Our small team of designers and installers offer a complete design, supply and installation service at a fraction of the price of other companies. We do not compromise on quality either, all our kitchens are manufactured in the UK, using only the very best components and suppliers. So before you commit to spending more than you intended, call us for a FREE, all inclusive quotation NOW! We’re sure that you will get a pleasant surprise. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. LIFE BEGINS
When It’s Time To Climb Out Of Your
Empty Nest
You’ve dropped her bags off at the student accommodation, taken photos of the campus to show the family and slipped her an extra fifty pounds to help with expenses. As you stand beside the car, waiting to leave, it hits you that you’re not just waving farewell to your daughter for the next three months, you’re saying goodbye to a way of life you have known for over 18 years.
“It wasn’t just that I missed my child, it was feeling that I had moved into a different phase of life,” is how senior nurse Jane Berry sums up the double-whammy most parents experience when seeing their children off to college or university. “Suddenly you are left staring at your partner over the breakfast table, thinking: where do we go from here?” Empty Nest Syndrome is not just about the emotions you feel when a son or daughter leaves home: it’s about facing a significant moment in your own life, too. The empty seat at the dinner table, the smaller shopping trolley, the half load in the washing machine – not to mention the eerie silence and unaccustomed tidiness – are not just reminders of your absent child, they are a wake-up call for you to reassess everything about your life: relationships, achievements, how you enjoy yourself and what you plan to do in the coming years. But it’s not all sadness and gloom. As we all know, living full time with a teenager
78
isn’t always easy and this period of change can lead to a more balanced and mature relationship between parent and child. Positives may include getting your bathroom back, being able to see your friends more often and spending less money on outings and leisure pursuits. No longer will your clothes and possessions be borrowed or the fridge raided, and for the first time in many years you will have the freedom to act spontaneously – taking off for the weekend without guilt or worry. But on the downside there are those inevitable, nagging concerns about how your child is managing: are they eating healthily? Having too many late nights? Getting into unsuitable relationships? It’s just as hard to accept that you no longer have any control over your child’s life as it is to face not seeing them on a daily basis. Even the most positive parent is likely to feel sad for a while when children leave home, and at this time it’s better for your mental wellbeing not to hide
your feelings from your partner, family and friends. It can be particularly hard for single parents, or for mums whose emotions are compounded by the onset of the menopause. If negative thoughts persist for many months it may be advisable to seek help from your GP.
for yourself.
Here are a few dos and don’ts that can help you climb out of that empty nest:
DO - find ways of filling the time Do something useful with all those hours you previously spent tidying, cleaning, shopping and caring. Join a choir, start blogging about your feelings or plan a life-changing trekking trip to the Himalayas. Use the time constructively to build a new life for yourself instead of letting it slip away.
DO - invest time in relationships Put aside those traditional ‘mum and dad’ roles and spend time getting to know your partner again. Plan a holiday together or take a series of short breaks to places you wouldn’t normally go with the whole family. If you are single, this is a good time to sign up to a reputable online dating site and start building a new life
DON’T - stalk your children on social media Through social media and Skype we can see, as well as hear, what our children are doing, but you should avoid the habit of obsessively checking what your child is up to. When you do speak, try to resist interrogating them or telling them how miserable you feel without them.
DON’T - underestimate the impact on siblings When a child leaves home it changes the whole family dynamic, and that is often just as hard on the other children as it is for you. Encourage siblings to keep in touch with their absent brother or sister and plan some special activities you can all do together in the holidays. Like any grieving process, the key to recovery is giving yourself time to adapt. “I felt at a loss for far longer than I expected,” admits Jane Berry. “Then something clicked and I was able to move on. Now it’s great to see my son during the holidays, but by the end I can sense he’s counting the days till he can go back. In a way, we are, too – we still miss him but it feels right that he has an independent life.”

MINI Countryman vs Skoda Yeti By James Baggott
All MINIs have a distinctive and instantly recognisable look to them, and with the Countryman range, it carries this identifiable image into a stockier frame to give you more space and practicality.
The stylish bodywork helps to make the Countryman a tantalising option in the CUV sector and with great additions and features to match, it’s difficult to see why you wouldn’t choose it.
66 litres more in a car 20cm longer and 10cm taller. This means you can get more for your money space-wise in the Countryman, especially as the range starts off cheaper than the Skoda.
However, it has competition from Skoda’s Yeti, a CUV similar in size and price and both cars have their good elements.
Customisability has also been a recent appeal of the MINI market, and with the Countryman this is no exception. With MINI’s design additions that can be fitted to the whole range, you can personalise your Countryman as much as you wish. Also you can fit satellite navigation, stereo system, leather trim and ‘Run-Flat’ tyres to your model; great options that can be added to any of the range. Good options aren’t as easy to come by on the Yeti, as the better choices to fit are only available further up the Yeti model range, whilst almost all are compatible with every Countryman model.
For starters, both models have had recent redesigns to create more space and alter their looks to be more modern and up-to-date. It has to be said that the Countryman certainly looks better than the Yeti, with the distinguishing features of the MINI range, such as the shape, the headlights and front grille, to make it truly stand out on the road. The size of both models also make them very practical, with the smaller Countryman offering 350 litres of space in the boot with the seats up, whilst the Yeti has only

the Yeti Outdoor and more expensive models, MINI offers the ‘All-4’ all-wheel drive system throughout the class. With a higher ride height and great grip on offer, the Countryman All-4 system will give you confidence both on and off road, with only a small premium on top of the twowheel drive versions. The Yeti’s base model is fitted with a 1.2-litre TSI petrol engine producing 110hp, whilst the 1.6-litre in the One produces just 98hp. This doesn’t compromise much in speed with only a marginal difference in acceleration. Overall, with a wider variety of vehicle and equipment options, value for money and great 4x4 system, the MINI
Countryman is the better option of the two, and with the great looking bodywork to encase you, why wouldn’t you want to drive it? The MINI Countryman is available from £17,105 for the One Countryman, with the
top of the range 218hp John Cooper Works All-4 starting at £28,985. For more information on the Countryman or any other models in the MINI range, contact your nearest Inchcape MINI dealership.

The Big Green Event is open for Business The Big Green Event 2016 is an Expo designed to demonstrate how a simple shift in mindset can improve an organisations processes, considerably reduce their running costs – and ultimately their environmental impact. The event will make it clear how those all important changes, no matter how big or small, will have a positive outcome. To be held at the Hilton Ageas Bowl near Southampton, the Expo is attracting businesses and eco enthusiasts from across the South, with 100 individually different exhibits, a 21st century IT and Communications Hub, keynote speakers - including Google, BAM Nuttall, IEMA, AVC 86
Group, Ellen McArthur Foundation, FreeGo Electric Bikes and more. The event will also feature the Ellen McArthur Foundation Trust ‘Circular Economy’, a fascinating insight into how manufacturers and other organisations will work in the future, and those who are actually adopting the methodology right now. Workshop rooms will include Waste and Energy management, ISO 14001, ESOS - with more to be announced. A one-day conference will also run alongside the show, a Green Room will host business leaders, an electric/ hybrid vehicle arena can be found
outside - as well as interactive demonstrations. The event organisers promise something for every organisation and eco enthusiast, and ask that everyone supports the event by attending this year, ensuring it is an important date in the calendar for years to come.

I Take It You Are Not A Fan Then? Ben Collins: Of course you know him. He’s was once in the white racing suit on Top Gear and latterly a stunt driver in James Bond films; he knows a thing or two about driving. So it came as no surprise when I learnt the former Stig is none-too-enamoured with the prospect of driverless cars on our roads. He laments that already the likes of lane-departure warning and collision avoidance systems are removing control from the driver and reducing them to “supervising passengers”. “The less of that the better” he says. “This stuff just makes people more prone to get their phones out and start texting.”
A good point. To date the majority of driverless cars have been tested at reasonably slow speed, on test tracks or with a capable human ready to take over if things go wrong (of which, in one well publicised coming together, the bus won). Ben raises a very significant point too: car electronics can go wrong. What happens when the sensors fail or get blocked by road dirt? If, and when, driverless cars are given the go ahead onto our roads (predications range from 10 years to never) they will be competing for road space with millions of existing “conventional” cars, all being driven by us drivers who will offer no special exemptions to the new kid on the block. I’m with Ben in wanting to keep humans in control, because those driverless cars will be, in effect, learner drivers with no L plates. By Iain Betson

Fire Service Can Now MOT Your Car Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service are offering a new facility to the public.. and it’s one you might not expect. The organisation, which specialises in frontline rescues and preventative work, can now also carry out MOTs.
as it was better value than outsourcing work on HFRS cars but giving MOTs to other vehicles also helps offset the cost of the fleet maintenance operation.
HFRS are offering the service from its shared headquarters in Eastleigh.
Repair work is not offered. The vehicle will either pass the MOT or fail with a list of issues that can then be worked on.
It has now launched a campaign to raise awareness of the independent service it can give to private motorists.
Operations and delivery manager Darren House said: “What we offer the public is a completely independent MOT.
The service was initially set up
“This could be an option for
people who want to arrange the work themselves which some people may prefer while others would rather have the one-stop convenience of taking it to a garage.” The fleet maintenance team, run in partnership with Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, charge £48 and currently do about three a day. For more information or to book an MOT call 023 8062 6750.
