Hello and Welcome Isn’t technology great? Isn’t technology awful? I do at times say both with equal passion. Sometimes, when everything is working as it should, I think technology is just wonderful. But when it goes wrong, it’s so frustrating and so time consuming. I am fortunate to have a technical background (I used to be a computer programmer) so it’s easier for me than it is for most people, but it’s so easy to be tripped up. I record a lot of very short instruction videos for people who work with me which is fantastic because it’s so much quicker than writing up a pile of notes. But my headphones stopped working. The first step was to try to figure out what the problem was – I couldn’t - so that’s the first half an hour gone; then I ordered another set from Amazon which was another good half an hour examining the choices. They arrived, but what I hadn’t noticed is that this set didn’t have a microphone – not much use when your voice is an important part of a video. Package those up, print off a returns label, take
them to the Post Office. Browse for another pair and buy those. Didn’t really like what arrived, but it’ll do. Except the sound was so low I couldn’t hear my voice on the videos. The air was blue by this time. Amazingly Kev – so clever in many ways but not with computers – suggested adjusting the recording level settings on my PC which did fix the problem. So think of that as you go Christmas shopping and you have it in your mind that technology will be a welcome gift. And if you succumb, I would definitely recommend finding yourself a friendly ‘geek’ (look under Computer Services in the index) – they are worth their weight in gold. Tania

DISCOVER SEASONAL
A Very Vintage Christmas It’s mid December and your newly-bought Christmas tree is standing naked in the corner of your living room. So it’s to the loft, garage or shed to dig out that battered old box of decorations. If your box is anything like mine, you’ll probably find a past-its-best fairy with drooping wings, some purple and silver baubles from the Millennium and two crushed crackers from last year’s Christmas lunch (couldn’t bear to throw them away) tangled together with swathes of tinsel, garlands, non-functioning fairy lights and springs of plastic holly. Most of my hoard is cheap, garish and ultimately disposable. But there’s one very special part of the collection that I will never throw away. It’s a treasured set of old-style, hand painted tree decorations, made out of wafer thin glass. Vintage tree ornaments are an evocative sight for those of us who were children in the 1950s and 60s: each year when I unwrap my collection it takes me back to a time when Christmas seemed truly magical and exciting. Although I understand the reasons why hanging delicate glass baubles on the Christmas tree – within grabbing distance of little hands - is no longer a good idea, it’s sad to think that such beautiful items are no longer readily available. The tradition of making glass tree decorations dates back to 17th century Bohemia (the modern day Czech Republic) and Germany. Today’s familiar ball shapes had their origins at a place called Lauscha in Germany, where legend has it they were first created when glass blowers competed to see who could blow the largest sphere before the molten glass popped. Those that survived were kept by the glassmakers’ wives, swirled with silver nitrate and sold at local markets as magic talismans, offering protection and blessing during the holy season. In 1848 a picture of the young Queen Victoria’s

Christmas tree, hung with decorations brought from her husband Prince Albert’s native Germany, was published in the Illustrated London News. This sparked a copycat craze throughout Europe and soon whole families in the town of Lauscha were employed to mass-produce decorations – the menfolk blowing the glass and the women and children painting and finishing the ornaments. Later that century, German immigrants brought the same passion for glass decorations to America. Thanks to entrepreneur Frank Woolworth - who bought millions for his popular chain stores - what began as a cottage industry in Lauscha became an international phenomenon. By the mid-20th century new molding techniques had sped up mass production and reduced the cost of manufacture. In addition to the more conventional round and oval shapes, there were decorations shaped like musical instruments, stars, lanterns, mushrooms, snowflakes, snowy cottages and little figures of Santa Claus. My favourite ones were the exotic birds with silky fibre glass tails that clipped onto your tree and trembled like real birds every time the branches moved. Nowadays most Christmas tree ornaments are made out of plastic, but if you do happen to find a Lauschan treasure lurking at the bottom of your decorations box, take good care of it. Vintage tree ornaments are becoming highly collectable and you can find sets on Ebay and other online auction sites for between £15 and £30. By Claudia Leaf

The Life List Top ten reasons for looking after your grandchildren - apart from loving them, of course!
4.
Spoil them a little and there’s a prospect of a better Christmas present than hankies, scented soap or socks.
5.
You can play computer games without having to buy them. You may also convince them to leave a games console behind, for practice.
6.
You can show the grandkids what real food is like, unless you fancy an excuse for the occasional burger and chips.
7.
You can teach your grandkids the ‘tidying up’ game, thus saving on the cost of a cleaner. This also works with the ‘car washing’ game and the ‘gardening game’, but use sparingly!
8.
You’ll have lots of exercise without having to join a gym.
9.
You can outshine that other set of grandparents.
10. Your own children will owe you.

Southampton area. Roy had fitted contact lenses to an incredible 15,000+ Southampton people.
If you suffer from myopia – short sightedness – you will almost certainly have tried contact lenses at some point. They really are a revolution for so many people, giving you normal sight, with better peripheral vision than glasses offer and none of the problems such as steaming up or dirt. Certainly if you do any sort of sport, you probably couldn’t imagine life without them. But you are putting something directly in your eye, so the fit and care of your lenses is a really important part of using them.
The really good news is that Roy and his wife Lynne have set up an entirely new practice in Chandlers Ford. Hampson Opticians Ltd is where he continues to fit contact lenses, welcoming new and existing wearers to his skillful care. Hampson Opticians also conducts full eye examinations and has a vibrant range of superb glasses frames all at very low prices.
Roy Hampson, acknowledged as one of the globally acclaimed group of British contact lens pioneers, began fitting contact lenses in Southampton when he opened the first Optique practice in Bedford Place early in 1985. Other practices in Bitterne and Totton soon followed and by the time he sold the business in 2010, Optique had grown to six practices all in the
Roy actively supports the competitive supply of contact lenses especially over the internet. Consequently he is very shortly going to be launching his website to enable you to do that. In the meantime, please call or pop in and you’ll find you’ll be able to buy now at the prices he will be offering online (prescription details required).

Churches' Christmas Message Christmas is a celebration of the birth of a baby. Any baby is special: any parents are proud. But any baby, however special, is a challenge to bring up for those parents. The baby celebrated at Christmas is Jesus, who is special because he is the son of God. And yet – he is a challenge to his parents! Born in extreme poverty in a strange town, Bethlehem, Jesus grows up to lead a band of disciples on a mission to reform the religion of the time. Such is his popularity with the masses and his disruption to the authorities, both civil and religious, he is put to death. But those very same disciples experience Jesus living again. They are emboldened to return to the very place of his death and confront the authorities once again with the good news of God’s love that Jesus preached. And all because of the birth of a baby at Christmas.

The Christian churches continue to be a movement of Jesus’ disciples, inspired by his story found in the Bible, of unlikely birth, compassionate teaching, sacrificial death and new life. We want to live the story each year so at Christmas, we open our hearts and sing ‘be born in us today’. As churches together, we want to invite you all to join us in the celebration of the birth of Jesus! For Christmas services in all the churches, please visit the Churches Together In Chandler’s Ford website www.ctcf.org.uk We wish you all God’s blessing this Christmas.

Can You Spot A Property Cheat?
If you’re thinking of buying a house or a flat, it pays to keep your eyes open for the Property Cheat. That’s the householder who, desperate to sell, tries to cover up the worst features of a home. Keep a lookout for some of the oldest tricks on the block when you set out on your next property viewing. 1) The Java jive This is the ploy of a seller who has read that the smell of fresh coffee makes a house seem more like a home. The logical extension of making a jug of fresh coffee would be to offer the potential buyer a cup, but somehow you know that won’t happen. 2) Put that light on One of the most common tricks is to leave the lights on - even on the sunniest day – in order to make a normally dull room seem brighter. A friend of mine tried this ruse when selling his dingy basement flat, only to find that the estate agent conscientiously turned the light off - in full view of his client - on leaving each room. Unsurprisingly the flat remained unsold for many months until my friend ‘had words’ with the agent. 3) No go area If you want to view a property for a second or third time but the sellers will only allow access at a particular time of day, ask yourself why. It may be that the quiet road where your future home is located becomes a race track at certain periods. The only solution is to stand around outside at different times of the day in order to observe the variations in traffic movement. You have nothing to lose: unless, that is, someone reports you to the police for lurking suspiciously in the neighbourhood… 4) Heaven scent? You walk through the door and find yourself almost choking on waves of cheap air freshener. Such liberal use of chemically-created scents can make you wonder whether years of deep-fat
20
C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61
frying, smoking and pet care have become so ingrained in the fabric of the house that only a lifetime supply of aerosols and perfumed candles can mask it. 5) New to the market When you’re enjoying a first viewing and the owner lets slip that she’s been showing people around for over two years, you may ask yourself why the Estate Agent told you the property was “new to the market”. It may be that a sale fell through, or the house was previously taken off the market for a few weeks then placed with another estate agent. So how do you find out how long your desired property has been hanging around unsold? Try some internet research: you may turn up an old set of details when the property was placed with a different agent (and almost certainly listed at a higher price). 6) The Emulsion Fairy Look at the walls and ceilings of your potential des-res. Do you see any patches that don’t seem quite in keeping with the rest of the paintwork? Then your seller has either had a visit from the Emulsion Fairy or he’s trying to cover up a damp patch. I know, suspicion is an ugly thing. To you, perhaps, these views may seem a little paranoid, delusional even. Then it may shock you, Gentle Reader, to learn that in my time I’ve tried most of the above tricks myself. And what’s more, they worked.

DIS COV ER LO C AL WALK
Testwood Walk Walk Distance 4.6 miles Historical Notes The 150 acre Testwood Lakes site was formed by gravel extraction in the 1980’s and 90’s. It now forms a working reservoir for water supplies to parts of Southampton, Totton and the Isle of Wight. The site is managed as a Nature Reserve. During gravel extraction, part of a Bronze Age boat was found dating from around 1500BC. •
From the A326 Ower to Totton road, turn left on the roundabout into the Calmore Industrial Estate. Follow the road through the estate and soon after it bears right, look for a concrete drive on the left signed as ‘Testwood Lakes Nature Reserve’. Turn left into the reserve and follow the road around to a gravel car park.
•
From the car park, bear right along a gravel track following the edge of Testwood Lake.
•
At a ‘T’ junction of paths, turn left to walk between the two lakes.
•
At a fork in the path, turn left and go through a kissing gate to follow the left hand lakeside.
•
At a fork in the path, bear right to leave the lake and go through a kissing gate. Cross over the bridge.
•
Ignore the stile on the right, keep straight ahead along a narrow path with wire fences either side.
•
As the path opens out to a track, turn right across a stile to enter a meadow. Follow the grass path diagonally right through the field following the red topped marker posts. Cross a stile and the bridge to cross the river once more.
•
Keep straight ahead through woodland to reach a road through the industrial estate.
•
Cross the road onto the pavement opposite and turn left. Walk to the end of the road ignoring the turning into Sunset Business Park.
•
Go past a metal gate. A few yards further on is a second gate into Test Valley Angling Club’s fishing lake. Turn right onto the footpath entering woodland then turn immediately left.
•
Walk a short distance through the woods then pass a wooden barrier to emerge into a field. Walk across the field keeping the boundary fence to your right.
•
At the end of the fence, Testwood School Playing Field is diagonally right. Turn left along the fence line, this time keeping the fence to your left.
•
The path meanders through scrub land to a kissing gate. Go through the gate onto a track and turn left.
•
Go past a metal gate to follow the track right then left past a brick tower.
•
Cross the bridges over the mill race and river then turn left through a kissing gate ...Continued on page 26

As the lane turns right to enter Nursling Mill, cross the stile straight ahead onto a gravel track. Follow the track as it bears right across a bridge then keep straight on following part of your outward journey back to Testwood Lakes.

At a ‘T’ junction of gravel paths at the lakeside, turn right and follow the footpath right around the lake to arrive back at the car park and your car.
to enter the Lower Test Nature Reserve. Follow the path along the boardwalk as it meanders through the reserve. •
Leave the reserve through a metal gate, cross a bridge then turn right along a track. On reaching the Southampton to Salisbury railway line, do not cross the tracks, but turn left through a kissing gate to walk along the trackside footpath signed as the TestWay.

Vacancies for Social Club Helpers Eastleigh Borough and Romsey MENCAP have a number of vacancies (paid and unpaid) at their Chill Out Club, and would love to hear from you. The Chill Out Club is a social club for adults with learning disabilities held each Monday evening in a Eastleigh town centre pub. Club members enjoy chatting, listening to music, having a drink or a meal, dancing, playing pool or card games and generally chilling out. We are always looking for volunteers to join the Club to mix with the members and to make friends. We also have two paid positions on offer - Club Co-ordinator and Club Helper. The Club Co-ordinator is the person who ensures the smooth running on club night, that people who attend are signed in and that they are supported in whatever they wish to do during the evening. The Club Co-ordinator is also responsible for line managing the club helper and volunteers, dealing with any problems, monitoring safety issues and reporting on progress within the Club. This role is for two hours every Monday. The Club Helper’s role is to support people in making the most of their evenings, by getting to know the different members, introducing members to each other and taking an interest in each Club member. The Club helper also supports the Co-ordinator in their role. This role is for two hours on alternate Mondays. Come and help us to enhance the lives of people with learning disabilities in the Eastleigh and Romsey areas. For further details about both positions or to volunteer, contact Michelle Bonnel, Development Officer, on

Do you have an interest in helping people with learning disabilities to enjoy and achieve? Then Eastleigh Borough and Romsey MENCAP would love to hear from you. EBR MENCAP is the area’s local society supporting people with learning disabilities. At The Chill Out Club, our members love to meet up with their friends, play music, pool or card games. The club runs every Monday evening with a co-ordinator and helpers, supported by volunteers. Active Citizens is a group of adults with learning disabilities who are interested in their community. The group helped set up a Safer Places scheme in Eastleigh. A “Safe Place” is a shop or public building where a vulnerable person can go for assistance and support. Our latest project, Limelight Local, is a series of new friendly theatre sessions in partnership with The Berry Theatre starting January 2013. This project is for young people aged 18 – 30, with learning disabilities, living in Hedge End, West End, or Botley, and for young adults who have been unemployed for 3 months or more, and who are living in the same area. For further details about all our activities and projects, call 023 8048 3471, or visit www. ebrmencap.org.uk So, what about that spare time you have? Do you have a particular flair for fundraising or ideas for new and exciting social activities, or how about helping us to keep our website fresh and up to date? Even if you only have an hour or two to spare a month, your contribution will be warmly welcomed by our members and Committee. If you would like to discuss volunteering with us, please give Elaine Fish a call on 023 8027 5475.

Winter Warmers Even if you’re sure you’re not going to venture into your garden much this winter, make sure you have every possible encouragement by creating a winter planter or two. They will not only look gorgeous from the warm comfort of your house, but will also help to coax you outside from time to time. Choose a larger container as it’s more likely to protect the roots on the plants due to the greater volume of compost. I’d avoid any container less than 30cm (12in) diameter if possible. Any container will insulate the roots a little, but one made from thick wood (such as a wooden trough or window box, or a halfbarrel) will be very effective. Good quality, fairly chunky plastic also works quite well. Try to avoid metal as this tends to conduct cold. Warm undergarments are all the rage for winter planters. A lining of bubble-wrap polythene or even a few layers of old fabric or carpet, sandwiched between the sides of the container and the compost will help to keep both compost and roots warm. If you live in a particularly cold area, or simply want to decrease the risk of winter damage further, try to position winter planters out of the windiest areas. If possible place them fairly close to a house wall on the south or west side as this will help to provide a little extra warmth. You’ll be amazed at the range of plants available at your local garden centre for adding winter colour and interest to pots and planters. Some of my favourites are the universal or other winter flowering pansies or even hardier smaller flowered violas. For some seriously sturdy winter colour, try
30

the winter flowering heathers as these make a good base for the display and you can then add trailing plants such as variegated ivies to help provide extra colour, texture and interesting leaf shapes. All these plants will last for years, not just the winter months. At this time of year, garden centres may offer very tiny versions of shrubs such as skimmias, Pieris or hollies and many of the dwarf conifers. They will provide good colour and interest in a container for a year or two and can then be planted in your garden to reach their full size. In warmer areas, you can add bright patches of colour to your display using the ‘winter cherry’ or solanum which has bright yellow and orange fruits. You could also use a few winter flowering cyclamen but these definitely need a very sheltered spot such as a window box on a protected wall. Don’t forget to add in a few early spring flowering bulbs such as miniature narcissus, crocus and miniature iris. Hide them beneath the roots of your winter bedding plants; you’ll forget they are there until they burst out in spring. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’. Choose from a fantastic selection of vegetables that Pippa will send to you at just the right time for planting AND each week you receive an email telling you all you need to know to ensure great results – from just £29 for up to 66 garden-ready plants. by Pippa Greenwood

DISCOVER SEASONAL
Christmas with Dickens Charles Dickens is often credited with inventing Christmas, or at least reinventing it and giving it its modern form. A Christmas Carol must be one of the most-filmed books ever, and the name of its central character, Scrooge, has entered the language. Yet it is one of his shorter works – a novella rather than a novel – and was only written to recoup the author’s finances after the failure of Martin Chuzzlewit. A Christmas Carol was an instant success, and Dickens followed it up with four more Christmas novellas between 1844 and 1848 (The Cricket on the Hearth of 1845, actually outsold A Christmas Carol), with 17 short stories published in the seasonal editions of his two magazines, Household Words and All the Year Round, between 1850 and 1867. Christmas badly needed reinventing. In the countryside, the grand old midwinter feast of medieval and earlier times had been driven underground by Puritan opposition before and during the Interregnum; and even after the Restoration it never really recovered its previous significance. And in the burgeoning industrial cities of the 18th and early 19th centuries, commerce allowed no pause for 12 days of ritual merriment. The shops didn’t even close. A companionable man, Dickens saw this as a great
36
social evil. The traditional Christmas festivities had been communal events, and it was the sociable and communal side of Christmas that Dickens celebrated. Although privately he was a devout if unorthodox Christian, you will find little of the religious side of Christmas in his writings. Scrooge, frightened out of his miserly ways, does not rush out to church on Christmas morning but goes visiting. And at the heart of The Pickwick Papers is the Christmas Eve ball at Manor Farm, where Wardle hosts a blow-out of Lucullan proportions at which all comers, including the Pickwickians, are welcome. It would be a wonderful but wholly impossible endeavour to seek to recreate that feast at Dingley Dell. For one thing the sheer quantity of alcohol consumed – hot punch, mulled ale, warmed claret, brandy and hot water for the coachman, the “something good” enjoyed by Sam Weller and the Fat Boy at the Blue Lion at Muggleton, the “hot elder wine, wellqualified with brandy and spice” - would give your GP a fit. For another, even the most rabid “political correctness gone mad” merchant would have to admit that the game enjoyed by the partygoers (after the dancing to “the only harp in all Muggleton” and the blind man’s buff) was dangerous to the point of insanity.
C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61
This was snap-dragon. The lights were extinguished, and a “ghost” in white sheet and wild wig presented a tray of raisins which had been soaked in brandy and set alight. These the players would have to grab without burning their fingers (hence the modern expression); and “when fingers enough were burned, and all the raisins were gone, they sat down by the huge fire of blazing logs to a substantial supper and a mighty bowl of wassail in which the hot apples were hissing and bubbling”. More booze. Perhaps, then, a truly Dickensian Christmas is too strong for modern stomachs. But one thing we might try is turning off the TV. No Queen’s Speech, The Great Escape, The Sound of Music or even A Christmas Carol. He believed in togetherness: friends, relations, neighbours, and stray Pickwickians all joining in one great joyous riot. So, hide the remote and bring on the mighty bowl of wassail and the only harp in all Muggleton! by Ted Bruning

'You are not alone' - The Benefits of Getting Legal Advice Over the past few years, I have noticed a dramatic increase in the number of women who have agreed to their ex-husbands’ terms for divorce to keep things amicable and straightforward, have since felt what the court ordered is unfair and then come to ask me what I can do to have it changed. However much I wish it weren’t, the answer is always the same - ‘absolutely nothing’. Only in the most exceptional circumstances can a solicitor such as myself make the case for the terms of a divorce that has been agreed by the Court to be changed in retrospect. Perhaps their former husbands had the stronger personality, perhaps it was felt they had all the power from earning and controlling the money, but so many women reach agreements to get situations over with in the short-term, and then live to regret it. Of course it isn’t just men. Many women have been able to make demands on ex-husbands using access and custody to children as a negotiating tactic if things got difficult or nasty, and men have agreed to conditions in their divorce they later wish they hadn’t. I would be foolish to ignore one of the main motivations of agreements of this kind between couples is to avoid involving people such as myself, but I honestly don’t know why this is the case. The fact that people would rather trust people they wish to divorce than experienced professionals whose job it is to look out for their best interests, is a fact that causes me a great deal of both confusion and frustration.
Our job as solicitors is to ensure that the individuals in our care are treated fairly and walk away from a relationship as well looked after as possible. That’s it. That’s what we do. Now that Legal Aid is being withdrawn from all cases other than those involving domestic violence and child custody, I am worried that more couples will seek to ‘save money’ by entering into agreements that later turn out to be onesided and unfair to one of the parties. I can say that hiring a lawyer is an investment in your future, I can say that we are here to protect people and guide them through the process, but I suppose people only really believe me when they are in a situation that cannot be reversed and, by then, it is too late. If agreements are made between a couple informally, then a solicitor can get involved to negotiate a change in terms and make them official, but once the Court has made its Order, that is it. Absolutely final. Game over. I do hope that people reading this article now understand that without professional advice, the desire to keep things amicable between couples can lead to the possibility of one side being manipulated and taken advantage of. by Catherine Maxfield

Haywood Office Services Choosing an office chair If you are working in a home office you’ll probably spend more time sat in your office chair than you do sitting on your living room furniture. So comfort of your seating is an important consideration but even more so is the ergonomics. An office chair that supports the lower back and promotes good posture will not only help you to avoid aggravating back problems, but will often stop them developing in the first place. A good chair is adjustable for the height of the seat and arms, the angle of the backrest and the lumbar support. The seat needs to be wide enough for you, but also deep enough from front to back – you neither want to be hanging off the edge, or finding yourself unable to sit
58

far enough back. Then the matter of the material covering the chair and the colour and style are other elements to decide on. Of course with something like this being so personal, it’s really important to go and try out your chair before you buy. Haywood Office Services have an extensive showroom of office furniture and chairs in their centre in Chandlers Ford. You can try out the chair sat in front of a proper desk, make all the adjustments and sit much as you would if you were at home. Even better, when you’ve found the perfect office chair, they’ll give you £10 for your old chair which is definitely better than throwing it away!

An Ode To Great Britain After a summer of Olympic glory and unbridled Jubilee celebrations, the British people are buzzing with a strangely unfamiliar hum of national pride. Great Britain is great again, and for the first time in ages there would appear to be a general consensus that, as an island, we done good. I think this is fantastic, I really do, and I’m certainly not here to complain about the widespread feeling of goodwill. But one small thing about it does bug me - and that’s the fact, quite simply, I’ve always liked it here, gold medals or no, and I think it’s just a wee bit fairweather that, now that we’re unexpectedly good at sport and fireworks, it’s suddenly ‘okay’ to love Britain. For me, many of the things people decry about this place - the unpredictable weather, the self-effacing attitudes - are precisely the things I like most about it, and the fact that we’ve now conclusively proved we can ride a weird bike around a massive salad bowl quicker than anyone else has frankly almost nothing to do with it, in my opinion. My band performed in Bordeaux this weekend. I’ve stuck around with my better half for a croissant-fuelled holiday in the French sun, and I think this may be what has led me to mull over this particular subject. You see, while I do like France, it does irritate me that us Brits have traditionally fetishised the place so heavily. ‘Oh, France,’ we intone as a nation, ‘you’re so much better than England. We wish we could live in you all the time with your relatively low rates of heart disease and your massive tomatoes, instead of being forced to live in this hapless crud-hole with all the rain and street crime’. But I think it’s unfair to compare the place you holiday with the place you live. It’s a bit like those kids of divorced parents who end up favouring the one that takes them to Legoland once a month over the one who cleans their pants EVERY SINGLE DAY. We’re convinced France has a ‘better quality of

life’ because, while we’re here, we just sit around eating cheese in the sun. Please don’t think of this as France-bashing - it’s obviously a terrific place for the most part - but I do rather feel that we’ve historically given old Blighty a hard time in comparison. As things stand, I’ll be interested to see whether our current state of bonhomie lasts into the winter, or whether we’ll simply return to complaining about absolutely everything, absolutely all of the time. If that does happen, then at the risk of sounding bolshy my feeling is that if you really do dislike Britain as much as you say you do, the world is full of places where it’s constantly sunny and nobody ever does any work (in other words, if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen - or rather, if it’s too cold for you where you are, please bugger off to the kitchen, because it’s plenty warm in there). Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go and tie a handkerchief round my head and sit on the promenade in the rain eating jellied eels and listening to Vera Lynn. Lovely jubbly. Chris plays piano in South London power-pop band The Lightyears. The Lightyears, voted the UK’s BEST POP/ROCK ACT at the Indy Awards, have played Wembley Stadium, toured across four continents and released a record with Sting’s producer. Chris has recently completed his first novel, “Mockstars”; a selection of extracts from the book are available to view at www.ProjectLightyears.com.

DISCOVER MOTORING
Ford B-Max Ford has ditched its forgettable Fusion and replaced it with a bold car sporting no B-pillars, but is it any good? We find out. What is it? It is the first car in a massive product offensive from the Blue Oval, designed to keep the car giant profitable in Europe. The B-Max replaces the forgettable – but much-loved among certain UK buyers – Fusion and goes up against rivals from Vauxhall, Honda, Nissan and Citroen in the B-segment MPV market. But to steal sales away from these firms, the B-Max has a party-piece – no B-pillars. What’s under the bonnet? Petrol buyers will be able to choose between the new 1.0 litre Ecoboost engine with 99bhp or 118bhp. There’s also a 1.4 litre Duratorq with 89bhp and a 1.6-litre Ti-VCT unit with 104bhp and an automatic gearbox. Diesels include a 1.5 with 74bhp and a 1.6 with 94bhp. Ford says the best seller will be the 1.6-litre diesel, but, in time, the 1.0-litre could claim that title. What’s the spec like? The range kicks off at £12,995 for the Studio 1.4-litre petrol which comes with electric mirrors and electric windows front and rear, while prices top out at £18,895 for the Titanium 1.6-litre diesel. That model comes as standard with 16inch alloys, auto headlamps and Ford system – a clever voice control and device integration system. It’s a £250 option on all models bar the Titanium. What’s it like to drive? At launch we drove the 1.0-litre Ecoboost 118bhp and the 1.6-litre diesel. The 1.0-litre is a blast yet still offers agreeable fuel economy figures – 55.4mpg combined is quoted – while the 1.6-litre diesel is sluggish. It has light steering and the ride is supple. The B-Max retains the Fiesta’s fun handling – a car on which it’s based. What do the press think of it? The Telegraph said: ‘After the execrable Fusion, Ford has worked hard to produce something different and worthwhile. This is a well-

engineered car, safe and good looking.’ Honest John adds: ‘And anyone already contemplating a Citroen C3 Picasso, a Hyundai ix20, a Kia Venga, a Toyota Verso S or a Vauxhall Meriva should get down to their Ford dealers and take a look.’ We asked Ford of Britain MD Mark Ovenden how much of a change the B-Max is over the old Fusion. ‘It’s a completely different vehicle. Fusion did pretty well for us and our dealers, but with B-Max the wow is the door system. B-Max also has lots of style, a large range of clever features and, of course, there’s the 1.0-litre Ecoboost engine. The B-Max is an excellent car – whereas the Fusion was essentially just a high-riding vehicle. B-Max has a got a lot more strength to it. As one of my younger colleagues said to me, the B-Max is more of an automotive app than a car!’ What do we think of it? This could well be the new class-leader as it makes other cars in this sector seem terribly conservative. Without having the benefit of trying all the engines and specifications, we can only really recommend the 1.0-litre Ecoboost 118bhp Titanium model which retails at £17,595. It’s not cheap but it’s probably worth the money. by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

DISCOVER SHORT STORY
Short Story Gloria's Christmas Diary by Jackie Brewster December 1st Glen came back from hemming up our Sylvia’s curtains and asked me if I wanted the good news or the bad? The bad news was that he had ‘accidentally’ volunteered us to do the family Christmas dinner this year. Well, I had to sit down. Christmas dinner for 14 people. I don’t even own that many glasses. I said what’s the good news and he said turkeys are half price at the moment. December 4th Glen measured up the dining table. There’s a foot per person at a push. I told him he’d have to move his knitting machine, and he said he’s using it to make homemade gifts. He said I should put up the gazebo and have Christmas outside. A gazebo in the middle of winter, I ask you! December 6th Sylvia came round for a coffee and said these days we like everything organic and free range. Then she looked at me pointedly over the top of her varifocals. She knows some farm where the turkeys are all given names. I’ve had to pay out £50 for a turkey called Tim. December 10th I’d just got back from doing a big shop when our Gladys rang. Her Melvin came over all peculiar in the lingerie department and now he’s being tested for coeliac. She said could I hang fire on flour until the results come in? Well, I’d just put five packs of short-crust in the freezer. I said, are you sure it’s that, didn’t the same thing happen at that tarts and vicars party? She muttered something about bad vol-au-vents and hung up. December 14th Good news. Sylvia’s Matt and his girlfriend have split up; apparently there was a misunderstanding over a photo on Facebook. So the girlfriend won’t be coming. That gives us an extra twelve inches to play with. December 16th Glen decided to test his homemade crackers and caused an explosion that took the fairy off the tree. He said he might have to re-think given that his mum’s on tablets for angina. I said I think they’ll be fine. December 18th Matt and his girlfriend are back on. He’s only gone and proposed. Sylvia says we should make Christmas a double celebration and have a champagne toast. I told Glen to buy that cheap Cava and serve it up in the pantry; they won’t know the difference.

December 21st They had to call the paramedics to Melvin’s works do. Apparently the girls from admin dressed as Sexy Santas and made him eat mince pies. Poor Melvin, he’s on complete bed rest and milky drinks until New Year. At least we’ll have elbow room now. December 23rd Tim was delivered today, or Tiny Tim as Glen calls him. I said is it a turkey or a budgerigar? Glen had to hot foot it down to the supermarket for the last pick of the butterballs. December 24th Disaster of Biblical proportions! Glen put the butterball turkey in the bath to thaw, and left the tap running. It was like Niagara Falls in the dining room. Glen emerged from the mist like Rambo in marigolds and declared we’d be cancelling Christmas over his dead body. December 25th We managed to salvage the day! Glen put the gazebo up. It was draughty but that made us all the more grateful for Glen’s homemade ponchos. And the sparks from the crackers gave off some warmth. I’ve put my feet up now with a well deserved sherry. I wouldn’t normally drink out of a vase, but we’re short on glassware. Merry Christmas everybody. Cheers!

News from
Chandlers Ford and Winchester MP Steve Brine
If I listen carefully I can probably hear you groan when I say that Chandler’s Ford could be moving into yet another new constituency at the next General Election. As you may have heard, the Boundary Commission for England is currently drawing up plans to reduce the size of the House of Commons. This is primarily to equalise the size of all parliamentary constituencies, to ensure each vote has the same weight, and to save the taxpayer money. This requires a re-drawing of all constituencies, including here in Hampshire. Draft proposals, which are out to consultation until December 10th, propose moving the four wards of Chandler’s Ford and Hiltingbury back into the Romsey constituency. If you have a view, you can have your say via the Boundary Commission for England website. For me however, it is business as usual and I have been really busy in Chandler’s Ford lately. My regular surgery continues, I have held a very successful street surgery at the Fryern Arcade as part of my Summer Tour and I held a lively ‘Ask Steve’ session last month at the Dovetail Centre on Winchester Road. Popcorn (the Labrador and I) are attended a very wet Hiltingbury Extravaganza last month at The Hilt. After a break in 2011, we had high hopes for a bumper year to raise some serious cash for good local causes but the weather had other ideas. I just want to say an enormous well done to the Cllr Mike Hughes and all the organisers for responding so well on the day and to all the team for making the event, albeit a bit cramped inside The Hilt, fun and carrying on regardless. October has been Breast Cancer Awareness Month and many of you will know of my work in this area in Parliament as Chair of the All-Party Group. The
exciting news in front of us is that I have secured a meeting in No.10 with the Prime Minister this month at which we will be joined by the three big breast cancer charities in this country. Our focus will be on screening and importance of moving to fully digital screening for women, not just in Hampshire but across England. Look out for more on this on my website or in the local press. Finally, it was a pleasure recently to open the new Yellow Dot Nursery on the boundary between Otterbourne and Chandler’s Ford. My wife Susie and (on his first every official engagement with Dad) little William joined me to cut the ribbon at this absolutely first-class new facility in the parish. I wish Jane and her team every success for the future. If you would like to get in touch on any issue you feel strongly about or need to attend my Chandler’s Ford surgery, please don't hesitate to get in touch via steve. brine.mp@parliament.uk. There is also a huge amount of information about my work locally and in Westminster at www. stevebrine.com.

THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY LOCAL NEWS & VIEWS
Pickled Newts Investment Club An investment club consists of a group of individuals who meet on a regular basis for the purpose of pooling money and investing in the stock market. They enable members to learn about markets, and exchange ideas with each other. Chandler’s Ford has its own Investment Club, it’s called the Pickled Newts Investment Club (so named after the venue of their early meetings –now the Mitre Portswood). Currently they meet at the Chandler’s Ford Central Club on the first Monday of every month. The club follows an agenda taking in discussion
on the performance of the club’s shares, sales/ purchases, and any shares to be considered for future purchases. There is a stop loss system in place to avoid heavy losses and to lock into any profit. Current membership is eleven and these clubs are normally limited to a maximum of twenty, thus at present there are a possible nine vacancies. The club welcomes new members of all levels of experience from complete novice to life long investor. We also stage social events during the year. New members are required to make an initial contribution of £100. Thereafter all members contribute a monthly direct debit of £25 (or multiples thereof). This money will be invested in shares – hopefully profitably. Any member wishing to resign from the club may withdraw their stake at any time subject to a small brokerage charge. Although results cannot be guaranteed every member is in profit, some would put this down to the benefits of collective decision making. Anyone interested should contact the Chairman Frank Newbery Email franknewbery@ btinternet.com . He would be pleased to arrange a visit so that you could learn more about the club.
