‘Oofing’ not allowed Well, here we are in 2015, and I’m trotting out all the old clichés: Can’t believe another year has passed, where did it go? Every bit as much as a birthday, the turn of the year reminds me that life is racing by. Although we’re not at retirement’s door, age creeps up in very subtle ways. As many of us do, Kev and I work hard at maintaining the image that we’re still up together. Weight watching, exercise, hair, clothes, makeup (not Kevin), and a witch’s cauldron of pills and potions in the bathroom cabinet (yes Kevin!). Still, last year I realised we were both doing something that was completely giving the game away. This is something that children never do, nor even 20 or 30 year olds. It’s ‘oofing’. ‘Oof’ is the noise that you make when you sit down. Or stand up. Or bend over, lift something heavy up or put it down, get into the car or get out. And if that’s not bad enough, broadcasting one’s ailments tells all: the bad back, sore hips, and the dodgy shoulder (most of which have been acquired as a result of exercise – I thought it was supposed to be good for you?). Clearly we aren’t kidding anyone. So, for all of us chasing eternal youth, it’s time to suck it in. Yes it hurts and you’ve lost flexibility, but there’s no need to remind the world of it. And just a little tip for those fed up with the on-off of reading glasses that creeps up after your 40th birthday, make an appointment with Hampson’s Opticians (page 17). Roy prescribed me some fantastic contact lenses specifically for reading and so that’s one little problem disguised.

HOBBIES

Time to Pick Up a Paintbrush By Kate McLelland As children we are all happy to draw and paint but as we grow older we often lose confidence in our abilities. School is not the easiest environment in which to develop creative talent, so it’s not surprising that many of us abandon Art as a subject in our mid-teens. It’s encouraging to learn, however, that art gallery visitor numbers have massively increased in recent years and this seems to have inspired more people to revisit their artistic skills as adults. Once you have decided to have a go at painting, the first step is to choose the type of paint and brushes you will use. Do you want to create delicate watercolours or big, bold canvases? Do you admire artists who paint with photographic attention to detail or do you prefer abstract art, where the paint can be randomly poured, splashed or dripped onto canvas to create bold shapes and patterns? We’ve all used watercolour paints when young, so many people find it natural to return to that medium

as adults. Watercolours may be versatile and easy to apply, but don’t expect instant results: you’ll need to spend time learning and practising the necessary techniques, otherwise your paintings may bear an unfortunate resemblance to the artwork you created back in Class 9C! Acrylic paints are similar to oil paints but easier to use: your work will dry faster and you won’t need to use solvents to clean your brushes. Acrylics can be mixed with water, so you can either paint with intense colour or dilute the pigment to produce transparent washes. This medium also dries to a robust finish: acrylic paintings can be safely rolled up without the risk of cracking. Oil paints allow you to create wonderfully expressive images, but using oils can be a challenge for a beginner as you will need to dilute the paint with thinners (white spirit or turpentine) as well as adding a medium, such as linseed or poppy oil, to bind the pigments in the paint and help with the drying process. An oil painting should be built up layer-by-layer, but you must allow time for the layers to dry: it can sometimes take up to five days for this process and during that period you will be unable to work on the

66

canvas. Fortunately you can now buy specially made fast-drying oils that will be touch dry in 24 hours or less. Make sure you have a variety of brushes available: round brushes are excellent for control and accuracy while flat brushes are great for edging and filling in areas. There are some useful online tutorials to help you develop your skills using water paints, acrylics and oils: www.wikihow.com has great step-by-step illustrated guides to get you started. Alternatively you could get face-to-face tuition at an adult education institute (your local library will carry a list of courses). Alternatively you can search for painting holidays at www.artcourses.co.uk. When you first start to paint the important thing is not to set unrealistic goals for yourself. It may be years before you feel confident enough to hang your work in a room, but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the process. If you make fun and relaxation your primary reason for picking up a paintbrush, you can’t go wrong.

Atrial Fibrillation A.F. As it is known to fellow sufferers is an abnormal heartbeat which manifests in many different ways. It is rather frightening and isolating because it makes you feel very vulnerable. I have suffered with it for almost five years and I feel mine was attributable to too many glasses of wine, I barely drink now which at the beginning was very hard, cos I felt you had to have a glass of wine in your hand to enjoy yourself. This is of course just my view, although it can trigger an attack likewise chocolate. Undiagnosed A.F can lead to stroke, heart attack so if possible its best to go to docs if your heart does funny things. There are numerous treatments mine is a beta blocker, warfarin, and a statin. The reason I am trying to set the group up is so no-one feels isolated. Next meeting Potters Heron Monday 12th January 11.a.m. Contact Wendy 07921801349 or wendysmallman1940@gmail.com 8

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Ballet Pointe Dancewear & Gifts Ballet Pointe, Winchester’s new dancewear shop, is the dream venture of two very dedicated ballet mums, Sally and Rosanna. Their first big break from tradition was to locate their store, right on the high street and not hidden, “off the beaten track”. “Being in Winchester’s town centre means it’s convenient for residents, workers and visitors to Winchester to pop in while shopping or fit around work.” says Sally, “We want our shop to be the first ‘Pointe’ of contact for everyone interested in ballet and dance”. Sally and Rosanna have firsthand experience of the trials and tribulations associated with the fickle world of ballet and dance; living through the worry and stress of supporting both daughters through auditions and exams . For them, the dedication and persistence along with lessons, travelling and expense of further training at Trinity Laban and The Royal Ballet resulted in careers in ballet. “We really have lived through it all and believe our experience allows us to advise on many aspects of ballet and dance.” Adds Rosanna, “We can

also ‘Pointe’ you in the direction of all the fantastic local schools and their associated uniforms.” The two storey shop is bursting with everything for all ages from hairnets to leotards, dance shoes, uniforms and a wide range of ballet-related gifts. In case what you want is not in stock, special orders are delivered within a matter of days. Located above the “Old Fashioned Sweetie Shop’ at 62, Winchester High Street (at the junction with Jewry Street), access is using the pink stairs at the rear of the shop. 62 High Street, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 9BX Tel: 01962 866000

We will also discuss full medical underwriting criteria and other application options including moratorium and switch. Having speedy access to medical professionals is a must for the self employed and small or family businesses. at philip Sommereux and associates we offer two different types of whitening a home tray whitening or combination of in chairside ‘power’ whitening and tray whitening. these options depend on the results you require and it’s best to start with a consultation at the practice as everyone’s teeth are different and we can advise you on the best choice for you. although teeth whitening agents are available online or over-the-counter it is safer to use a dentist for home teeth whitening. when used unsupervised, the whitening solution or bleach may be too high in concentrate or may be excessively used and cause damage to tooth enamel. tooth sensitivity may result from teeth whitening not prepared by a dentist.

Drop A Dress Size Digitally! Fitbit Charge and Surge fitness trackers

It’s that time of year again: everybody’s on a diet and the gyms are packed with people whose memberships will last much longer than their willpower. But there’s no need to take extreme measures if you overdid it a bit at Christmas: a few well-chosen gadgets can make losing weight much easier. The trick to weight loss is to make little, permanent changes. For example, using an oil mister (from around £9) reduces the amount of oil you use in cooking while a set of measuring spoons and a digital scale can ensure you’re not putting too much of any ingredient into your food. If you can’t bear to give up fried food, go for a low-fat fryer such as Breville’s Halo Health Fryer (£79.99) or Tefal’s ActiFry (£119) which will mean you get all the taste with a fraction of the fat. Gadgets can help you cook healthy meals in other ways, too: if you have a smartphone, an iPod touch or a tablet you can take advantage of stacks of cooking apps ranging from celebrity chefs’ apps to specialist apps such as 18

the British Heart Foundation’s Healthy Heart Recipe Finder, which is free on both iOS and Android. We’d also recommend using a recipe manager such as the fantastic Paprika app to store any good healthy recipes you find online from the likes of the BBC Good Food website. No weight loss programme comes without the recommendation to exercise more, and there are plenty of gadgets designed to help with that too. Fitness trackers can keep an eye on how many steps you take and calories you burn, with devices such as the Fitbit Surge smartwatch (£199) and Fitbit Charge activity tracker (£99) and Nike’s Fuelband (£89) making it easy to track your progress. If you have an iPhone, Nike’s device also enables you to share your progress with friends in private groups. There’s a huge trend for health monitoring in smartphones, with both Google’s Android and Apple’s iPhones offering health tracking apps. In both cases the apps can talk to other devices such as fitness trackers, and

there are plenty of third-party apps for recording your food intake, the workouts you do in the gym or anything else you might want to track and record. How can you tell if your new regime is working? While it’s tempting to climb on the scales every day that’s a bad idea, because our body weight fluctuates quite dramatically from day to day. It’s better to track the longer term trend, and once again technology can help with that: smart scales such as Withings’ wireless scales (from around £80) can help you track your weight loss by storing over 100 readings. The scales are also compatible with smartphones, which can take the readings and turn them into inspiring and motivational graphs. If you really want to see what’s happening to your body, gadgets such as Omron’s Body Logic Fat Analyser (£74) can tell you how much muscle you have, how hydrated you are and how much fat you’re carrying. That’s useful if you’re working out as well as eating well, because muscle weighs more than fat - so your weight might not change but your body composition will.

“All you should know before you trust a Therapist with your injury” Free Special Report, from goPhysio PAIN. Everyone experiences it at some point. It’s an amazing phenomenon that alerts us that something isn’t quite right. One type of pain, that affects up to 69% of adults at any one time, is something we’re not so pro-active about. It’s the pain associated with our joints, nerves and muscles - known as musculoskeletal pain, i.e. back pain, sports injuries, sciatica and that type of thing. We moan about it, we tell people about it at every opportunity, we struggle to walk, we can’t sleep, it stops us doing & enjoying the things we love like running or walking - but for some reason, we just put up with it, unsure what to do. To save you time, effort and expense, we’ve put together a Free Special Report to answer your injury questions and concerns and help guide you through the maze of solutions at this frustrating time. In this special report, Paul Baker, Clinical Director at goPhysio shares insider information built up over a lifetime of clinical practice treating10,000‘s of patients. He’ll answer your common questions, offering 22

clarity and debunking myths related to injury, treatment & recovery. A sample of some of the 45 most frequently asked questions we answer...........

Q.

Should I rest now I’ve got an injury?

Paul says: I prefer the term ‘selective rest’, which means to selectively rest from the aggravating (pain causing) activities. So, if you’ve got an ankle injury and you’re a keen runner, it is usually better to rest from running until you’re recovering but gentle alternative non-aggravating activities such as swimming can be really helpful. Total rest is never advocated, this will only slow down your progress and can cause many more secondary issues.

Q. My GP has told me to

just rest for 6 weeks & take painkillers, isn’t that enough?

Paul says: Do you want to rest for 6 weeks? Can you afford to rest for 6 weeks? A Physio will be able to reassure you what you should and shouldn’t be doing

to help your recovery. You’ll go away knowing exactly what is wrong with you and exactly how to help it get better. The result is a speedier recovery, getting back to what you want to be doing quicker and without the worry of the unknown.

Q. I know I need to do something, but I’m just so busy? Paul says: It’s a matter of priorities! How replaceable is your body? It’s always amazing how quickly and routinely we get our car fixed or boiler serviced or pay for our pet to go the the vets. Yet, when something isn’t working in our body we just put up with it. If you take the time and effort to invest in your health, you’ll be able to keep doing all the things you enjoy. This special report is only for health conscious men and women aged 35 - 75, serious about their health. Have all these questions answered at your leisure, in the comfort of your own home. So boil the kettle and download your FREE Special Report by visiting www.offers.gophysiotherapy. co.uk/PhysioReport

“Kim saved my sanity in 5 visits. I crawled in on a stick, and walked out less than 2 weeks later ready to fly to Dubai. Thanks goPhysio....I'll be back immediately and won't suffer as before next time I’ve got an injury.” Sue, 65 year old Retired Nurse

GARDENING

The Truly ‘Green’ Garden by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com

Well, it’s time to say good-bye to the year 2014 as 2015 is well and truly upon us. This is the month when it is really worth spending a bit more time than usual thinking about the year just gone and the one ahead. What are you going to do in your garden in the year ahead, what plans and dreams do you have? What changes would you like to make?

More and more gardeners have decided that they really want their gardens to be pesticide free zones, concentrating on natural methods of pest control, good gardening and the use of natural fertilising materials rather than chemical feeds. And they do it because it works and makes life so much better for the other less powerful creatures and plants we share our space with.

forethought than gardening that is reliant on an armoury of chemicals. If you grow vegetables you will need to ensure that you rotate your crops. Just approximately divide the space you have into three or four chunks and then ensure that each year you grow related crops together and then the following year, each group of crops are moved in to a new plot.

Since we moved to our Hampshire garden nearly twenty years ago, I have kept it completely organic and believe me, it really is not difficult. Weed control can certainly be harder as there is no resorting to herbicides such as glyphosate, but if your garden has been looked after and doesn’t have too many persistent weeds, even that should not be too difficult. If you do have an existing problem then make weeding a regular part of your gardening time and you’ll be pleasantly surprised how speedily you start to get on top of it, and maybe even feel the need to spend less time in the gym and more time out in the fresh year getting a seriously natural and healthy work out completely free of charge. The rest is easy!

It also pays to ensure that you really do garden as ‘well’ as you can, avoiding too many short cuts and taking the plant’s health and vigour as a prime consideration. In any part of the garden you need to try to choose plants that really are suited to the site as those grown in unsuitable conditions will struggle and be more prone to disease and pest attack. Don’t forget the old gardening adage, ‘Right Plant, Right Place’.

True, organic gardening does take a bit more planning and 26

Regular patrols to find problems, so that they can be caught at the early stages and dealt with promptly, mean fewer problems in the long-term and should ensure that you catch an infestation of pests or a disease outbreak before it gets too bad. Often picking off pests or badly infested or infected leaves can be sufficient to prevent a problem developing.

Barriers and traps are really useful – I am a great fan of horticultural fleece. Placed over a crop such as calabrese from the moment you plant it out, you should be able to ward off all the common pests including caterpillars, cabbage root fly and aphids. Traps such as submerged beakers of old beer or milk to catch slugs, sticky yellow cards to trap flying pests, all work well. And where would I be without sticky backed copper tape and copper rings to keep my veg crops slug free? Of course for many pests there are also biological controls available – to keep vine weevils and slugs at bay in the garden, to stop ants driving you insane, to sort out pesky caterpillars and to make your lawn free from leatherjackets, plus a whole range of controls to stop greenhouse pests such as red spider mite, whitefly and

mealy bugs. Keeping the soil in good condition is a must and if you don’t already have a compost bin or heap, get on and make or buy one straight away. Garden compost is a fabulous soil conditioner and is packed full of nutrients…..all at little or no cost.

to you, but I strongly recommend it, for a whole host of reasons, only some of which I have mentioned here. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and make veg growing easy with ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ – Pippa sends your chosen veg plants to you at a perfect time for planting and each week emails advice and tips for getting the best results; plus lots of great barriers and biological controls.

Some of these things will add to your gardening budget, but remember that you will not need to spend your hard earned cash on chemical fertilisers, Sensible and strong 17 year old boy availpesticides able to help with gardening chores at the or spraying weekend. Digging, weeding, pruning, equipment, leaf clearing. Highly recommended by and of course you won’t need previous customers (business to spend time established 2011!), has own applying the transport. Very reasonable sprays. The choice is up

Snowdrops at Mottisfont - National Trust

Roll Out the White Carpet, it’s Snowdrop Time with the National Trust in Hampshire Snowdrop walks at Mottisfont Drifts of snowdrops appear along the banks of the Font stream of this ancient former priory, where the warmer water creates its own microclimate. Elsewhere, the open acres of the river garden are magically transformed by drifts of purest white. In February, you can enjoy a guided walk through the grounds of Mottisfont and witness the beauty of its wild snowdrops. Guided snowdrop walks: 7, 8, 14, 15 February, 10.30am, 12.30pm & 2pm, free upon normal admission charge, no booking required. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/mottisfont or call 01794 340757.

Snowdrop clusters at Hinton Ampner You’ll find hundreds of delicate snowdrops dotted across the lawn beside the house at Hinton Ampner, which is full of scent and colour even in the depths of winter. Hinton’s previous owner, Ralph Dutton, designed the East Lawn of this garden around the tiny parish church in the grounds. He knew that even in the colder months, the church’s congregation would gather on the grass after the Sunday service, so he planted the lawn with fragrant winter flowers such as daphnes, which have a zingy lime scent and tiny pink flowers. The church border is hedged with sweet box Sarococcas, which fills the air with a heady honey scent. You’ll also discover delicate winter aconites and colourful crocuses. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/hinton-ampner or call 01962 771305. FINANCE

Payment Protection Insurance: Is It Still Worth Considering? Payment Protection Insurance is intended to protect loan and credit card repayments should you be made redundant, have an accident or fall ill and can no longer work. On the face of it taking out such a policy seems like a good idea, but delve a little deeper and you’ll probably find endless exclusions and get-out clauses that severely limit the amounts paid out.

By Ann Haldon

These policies have been seriously mis-sold in the past, with excessive charges being levied, buying pressure put on borrowers, and scant information provided at the time of sale. The irony is that these policies were unfit for purpose during a time of deep recession – a time when they were needed the most. We take a look at the circumstances in which you might still choose a PPI policy, and help you decide whether they are even worth considering, but first here’s a short history of the PPI mis-selling scandal. • 2005: the Financial Services Authority (FSA) released its first report on the mis-selling of PPI. Citizens Advice also complained to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT). • 2008: the Competition Commission took over the OFT investigation and decided to ban the selling of PPI in relation to credit cards and loans. • 2009: some financial institutions challenged this ruling in court, but the challenge failed. • 2010: the FSA recommended that all consumers who were mis-sold this product should be compensated. The British Banking Association sought a judicial review, and the majority of compensation

52

payments stopped at this point. • 2011: the banks lost their case and claims against mis-selling resumed with a vengeance. The Financial Ombudsman service has been inundated with PPI mis-selling cases. Around 200,000 claims have been made in recent years and to date, billions of pounds in repayments made to consumers. In the wake of all this, is PPI still worth consideration? The stress caused by being unable to work due to sickness or redundancy is all-consuming, and on the face of it, Payment Protection Insurance is a great concept. Why wouldn’t you want to protect large mortgage or loan repayments in this way? This still holds true today, but as with any financial product you need to carry out due diligence as to its suitability for your particular circumstances. Decide whether it is any better for you than Statutory Sick Pay, and if the exclusions/terms and conditions are too stringent. A trusted financial advisor will guide you through this process – preferably one who specialises in PPI, as only with the hard facts can you make an informed decision. There are fewer companies selling PPI these days, but some offer very similar products presented under

a different name. A Repayment Option Plan is one such product. This is usually sold alongside credit card borrowing, and is supposed to protect against redundancy or being unable to work through sickness. The product works by offering payment holidays or freezing of the credit card account for a specified period of time, with charges and fees being levied for the privilege. Carry out your own due diligence If you’re still considering taking out a PPI or similar product, there are several things you can do to minimise the risk of making a mistake: • Go over the small print in fine detail - particularly, eligibility for payouts and any exclusions. Check and double check anything ambiguous with a professional financial advisor that you trust, and don’t be

pressured into buying it by anybody. • Make sure there are no existing insurance policies in existence, or workplace benefits that would come into force in the event of being unable to work. Some life insurance policies have clauses that include this, and it’s easy to forget they are there. • Don’t assume that the lender’s policy is the best one for you. It is in their interests to get you to sign up for a policy, but not necessarily in yours. Carry out research on other providers who may offer a product more suited to your unique circumstances. So what exclusions should you be looking for? A PPI or similar policy can be full of exclusions - enough to make you wonder whether anyone actually receives any benefit.

Common exclusions include self-employment, dismissal as opposed to redundancy, mental ill-health including stress, and being unable to work due to back pain. As far as PPI is concerned, strict selling regulations now make it unlikely that you will be mis-sold in the same way, but you still need to focus on your actual need for this product in the first instance. If you decide to go ahead, ask for a copy of the policy, read through it again and keep it safely filed away. Fees and charges for PPI can add a considerable amount to the loan, especially if you pay them upfront, as interest will be charged on the total. You should be offered the facility to pay monthly, which may be a cheaper alternative in the long-run, but make sure the lender cannot increase these premiums once the policy is underway.

Your Legal Options For Divorce Q:

After an uncomfortable and rather painful Christmas, I left the house I shared with my wife and family and have decided to begin divorce proceedings. How do I get this process started?

step back. There is so much pressure on couples to be a ‘perfect’ family over Christmas. Unless you are all sat round a vast table groaning with food in your best clothes, laughing, joking and pulling crackers in a glow of warmth and happiness, you can feel like a failure. For some people, it highlights cracks in a relationship at a time when, due to the many activities with visiting family and friends, it is often impossible to talk about them. Throw into that mix the cold weather that keeps everyone indoors, Christmas can serve as a relationship pressure cooker.

Then we have New Year, full of resolutions and new beginnings which often make a quick exit seem like the easiest option, but is it? Will there be expectation of the family staying there? Is there a mortgage? Who is paying it? Does your wife work? If not, has she been financially dependent on you for some time? You also need to think about financial assets such pensions, shares and investments and any debt that has been incurred with personal or business loans, overdrafts and credit cards. Whatever the situation, divorce proceedings now involve the process of ‘Mediation’ with professionals who are trained to remain impartial and facilitate discussion between parties. They will meet with you and your wife together, identify the issues and try to help you reach agreement. They can provide broad based legal information, but since they cannot advise you, you will need a lawyer as well. Another option is for a Resolution Lawyer to consider the ‘Collaborative’ approach. This is a relatively new way of dealing with family disputes, where each person appoints their own lawyer and everyone meets together to work things out face to face. The key is to take things one step at a time with the right professional advice to make sure everyone can move on with their lives happily. By Emma Cole

HOME & INTERIORS

Design a Blissful Bedroom By Katherine Sorrell luxury ruched bed linen

Your bedroom is a private retreat, a special place in which to relax, unwind and express your true personality. Our tips from expert Katherine Sorrell will help you make it as comfortable, functional and beautiful as possible First, think about how you use your bedroom – is it just for sleeping, or do you listen to music, watch TV, make phone calls or even work? You will need to allocate space for each different function. Then, consider the atmosphere you want to create – would you prefer a light, bright and airy room, or one that is dark and dramatic? In general, soft and gentle colours are considered most restful, and it is a good idea to avoid loud patterns and clashing shades. A feature wall (perhaps behind the bed head), with either one strong paint colour or an interesting wallpaper pattern, can be a great way to provide interest without going over the top. In high-traffic areas such as halls and living rooms, carpet (if used at all) needs to be hard-wearing 60

and practical. In a bedroom, however, wear and tear is not such a factor, spills are not such a risk and bare feet are more likely to be the norm. All of which means that this is the ideal place to give your toes a treat and opt for a sumptuous, deep-pile carpet. That said, natural or painted wooden floorboards with a few rugs scattered about (on each side of the bed in particular) is an alternative with masses of character. Whether you use curtains, blinds or shutters, your windows should be well-covered, both for privacy and to avoid earlymorning sunlight waking you up. Sumptuous curtains with a blackout lining will do the trick, as will louvered shutters – which also offer an extra element of security. Roller blinds are plain and simple, and ideal where space is restricted, while Roman blinds pull up in lovely soft folds that give an attractively draped effect. Aim for the maximum storage possible: ideally a combination of floor-to-ceiling fitted wardrobes with free-standing pieces for

character and flexibility. If in doubt, the only way to calculate exactly how much storage you need is to take a tape measure and calculate square footage for long and short hanging, folded clothes, shoes, blankets, linens and other items. Plan the interior of a wardrobe with the utmost precision, and look for gadgets such as tie racks, belt racks and pull-out trays. If you’re really short of space, clever storage ideas include under-bed drawers, stacking boxes, canvas “tidies” hung on the back of the door, plastic shoe racks stacked inside the wardrobe, and a bamboo ladder leant against the wall for scarves, spare bed linen or clothes. Subtle, flattering lighting is best for a bedroom, and if yours is not quite how you would like it you can make some quick, easy and inexpensive changes such as adding a table lamp or two in the corners, and fitting a dimmer switch to a central pendant. A strong, bright light, on the other hand, is essential above a dressing table mirror (don’t position it to one side – it will cause awkward shadows).

For bedside reading, a pair of swing-arm, wall-mounted lights will free up space on a bedside table – some types include tiny, adjustable spotlights so you can enjoy a novel without disturbing your partner. Lastly, to transform a bedroom from boring to boudoir, introduce sumptuous bed linens that are gorgeous to look at and enjoyable to touch – cool and crisp or cosy

and warm, depending on the time of year. The quickest and easiest way to put together a gorgeouslooking bed is simply to use plain white or off-white sheets, pillow cases and a duvet cover, and add a stunning throw, blanket, eiderdown or quilt – or several, for eye-catching colour and pattern. Layer texture on texture, plains with patterns, modern with vintage – creating a serene and luxurious, indulgent retreat.

Main Image: Layer bed linen for an interesting mix of textures and attractive effect. This design, of pleats, ruched cotton and grey hand stitching on 100% cotton percale, would work in a traditional or modern room. Ruffle Pleat bed linen, from £28 for a pair of pillowcases, The French Bedroom Company, 08456 448022; www.frenchbedroomcompany.co.uk.

Get a really good night’s sleep • Choose as big a bed as you can, as disturbance from a partner is one of the most common causes of sleeping complaints. • The mattress should be comfortable and supportive. Lying down, slide the flat of your hand into the hollow of your back. If it slides in very easily, the bed is too firm; if it’s hard to slide your hand in, the bed is too soft. • If you and your partner prefer different mattresses, or are very different in weight, you may need a combination mattress, or two singles that zip together. • Launder pillows regularly and replace every few years.

Readers will be aware that last year saw fantastic news for us on motorway noise as our long campaign finally allowed me to announce resurfacing of the M3 would be brought forward from 2020 (at the earliest) to the financial years 2015/16 and 2016/17. While I didn’t want to raise hopes we could bring it forward again I knew there was a chance if we could secure enough infrastructure investment in the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement. So when I received news from the Highways Agency just before Christmas

It wasn’t but it’s true and my constituents should look out for letter drops from the Agency soon. I will post them also on my webpage at www.stevebrine.com/ m3noise And finally, I have regularly written a column for parish and community magazines across my constituency since becoming your MP. I love doing so and the feedback from constituents is huge. That is testament to residents for taking

such an active interest in their areas but also to these publications which do a terrific job. So it was a pleasure to invite editors from every such publication – including your own Tania Houston – to Parliament recently for a tour and a small reception to thank them for the work they do. Hope you enjoy our snapshot from the day. You can catch-up on all of my work via www.stevebrine.com or by calling 01962 791110.

LOCAL NEWS

Chameleon Theatre Company Celebrate Their th 50 Anniversary The Chameleon Theatre Company who rehearse and stage 4 productions a year at The Ritchie Hall on Hursley Road in Chandlers Ford celebrate 50 years of performance this year. They have been entertaining local residents since 1965 when they staged their very first production, The Giaconda Smile by Alduous Huxley at Eastleigh Town Hall. This review of their very first play appeared in the Evening Echo The Evening Echo reporter who attended the Chameleon’s initial production reported “The new local group, Chameleon Theatre Company, have the talent and credit to be around for many years to come.” How right he was! With many local amateur dramatic groups having closed down over the past 10 years, we are delighted that the Chameleons continue to attract talented young performers and continue to stage high quality performances which sell out 3 or 4 weeks before opening night. Productions scheduled for 2015 include 3 episodes from the hilarious hit TV show Fawlty Towers from 23rd to 25th of April and recently making its come-back on the West End stage, Alan Ayckbourn’s smash hit comedy Relatively Speaking which runs from 23rd to 25th of July. Subscribers to Chameleons’ eNewsletters can book their seats two weeks before the box office opens to the public so visit their website at www.chameleontheatre.co.uk and sign up. 64

RECIPE

Paneer and Mixed Vegetable Coconut Curry

Serves 4

This filling vegetable curry can be made with any mix of vegetables you have to hand. Serve with steamed rice or crusty bread and some cooling natural yogurt. Ingredients:

1.

Bring a pan of water to the boil. Add the carrots and boil for 5 minutes until almost tender adding the cauliflower and broccoli florets for the last 2 minutes. Drain well and set aside.

2.

Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan over a medium heat. Add the paneer and mushrooms and stir-fry over a high heat for 3-4 minutes until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.

3.

Add the onion to the pan and fry very gently for about 10 minutes until soft and golden. Add the garlic, ginger and chilli and fry for a further 2-3 minutes then stir in the Thai paste and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

4.

Pour in the coconut milk and bring to the boil then reduce the heat and return the paneer and mushrooms to the pan along with the drained vegetables, peas and tomatoes. Stir well and simmer gently for 4-5 minutes. Add the lime juice and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve garnished with sliced red chilli pepper and oregano leaves.

• 2 small carrots, peeled and thinly sliced • 100g small cauliflower florets • 100g small broccoli florets • 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 225g paneer cheese, cubed • 150g mushrooms, wiped and sliced • 1 large onion, peeled and chopped • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed • 2cm piece root ginger, peeled and grated • 1 red chilli pepper, deseeded and chopped, plus extra sliced chilli to garnish • 1 tbsp Thai red curry paste • 400ml can coconut milk • 150g frozen peas • 2 tomatoes, roughly chopped • Squeeze of lime juice • Fresh oregano leaves, to garnish

Ready in 45 minutes

Paneer is an Indian vegetarian cheese which has a firm texture and goes particularly well with spices and garlic, chilli and ginger. You can use drained and cubed tofu instead, if preferred.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Chandlers Ford & Eastleigh areas and Justin is finding that his

approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

LOCAL NEWS

Jackie Porter’s County Corner Local News For Your Community In November, we heard from County Council officers how the Care Act will affect lives from 2015. Under the new act, the county council will have a duty to provide: • Advocacy for those who do not have relatives • A duty to meet the assessed needs of carers • A revised deferred payment scheme for residents who want to use the value of their property to offset the cost of care • More consistent standards across the country with a single national threshold for eligibility for care and support, including carers for first time. • A duty to provide a re-ablement service and intensive support

Group (FLAG) plans in place now. The Autumn workshops were useful to help us finalise what needs to be documented. The County has a flooding programme to 2029, with an immediate 6 year programme to 2021, followed by a fuller programme to 2029. Over the last week Ray Gardner, our local Hampshire County Council engineer has cleared gullies across the area. His area is vast but he is experienced and knows what has to be done in our efforts to prevent flooding again this year. Jackie Porter 01962 791054 text 07973 696 085 jackie@jackieporter.co.uk

Increasingly local authorities encourage local people to volunteer their time to balance out some of the costs of care and poor mobility. Winchester Live at Home scheme offers exercise, craft, food, singing and companionship as well as carrying out shopping duties etc. You can call 01962 890995 or email office@wlahs.org if you would like to volunteer for or need help from this charity.

Snow Alert Following unprecedented snow then floods in recent years, the County Council has set up a public announcement service for bad weather alerts You can go online to hants.gov.uk then press the large button on the front page, or go to http:// www3.hants.gov.uk/winter-maintenance for snow and gritting schedule. Information can also be obtained from twitter @hantshighways There will be real time gritter tracking available tooonline from GPS in the vehicles. All of the grit bins should be fully replenished by end November.

MOTORING

Rolls Royce Wraith By James Baggott, editor of CarDealerMagazine.co.uk

This is surreal. I’m wrapped in the finest leather, staring at some of most ornate materials I’ve ever seen inside a car and yet still I’m wafting along the challenging A543 at a pace that is leaving the RTOTY crowd lagging behind.

Surfing on a gloriously torquefilled surge of V12 goodness, delicately light steering guiding this two ton luxury monster across the Welsh moors, I’m opening up a gap on the cars behind me as my relationship with the Rolls-Royce Wraith finally clicks. For the last two days I’ve been living in fear of harming the £219,480 brute, every wayward sheep tying my stomach in knots, every oncoming tractor making me wince at the impending doom that never happens. You see driving the Wraith is quite some responsibility. With a price tag that wouldn’t look out of place in an estate agent’s window, piloting the curvy-rear ended British beauty – the sportiest of Rolls-Royces – really is a nerve-wracking experience. Well, at least at first it is. In time, as the miles rise, fear eases, and you finally begin to gel with the giant – and it’s then, at this moment, that the wonder of this incredible feat of engineering is finally hammered home. It’s here, now, on this stunning

78

piece of tarmac that’s twisting across the dew-dipped Welsh countryside that the Wraith truly comes alive. The 624bhp V12 may be whisper quiet on the motorway, where the dash tells you there’s still 90 per cent of power in reserve (there’s no gaudy rev counter in here), but in kick down it growls, bellows deep and powers off towards the future like a Bullet Train. The first time I let the Roller scamper off, it shocks with the aggressive nature it adds digits to the head-up display. Make no mistake, this big girl has serious pace. There’s no hiding the Wraith’s girth, though. It’s absolutely huge – and feels it. Most of the team who got behind the wheel exited with a huge grin on their face, not just because it was such an event to drive, but because they handed back the jewel-like key and returned the Wraith unscathed. Everyone also agreed that it was simply a very special place to spend time in. Driving the Wraith is an event. From the automatically-closing suicide doors, to the inch-deep

lamb’s wool carpets, to the glass buttons on the dash and beautifully machined solid metal vent pulls and piano black dash, everything inside feels five star hotel, Ritz-like perfect. All it needs is a butler on the options list to retrieve the umbrellas from inside the flanks of the two front doors to be truly palatial. Driving it to and from Wales for our shoot I was staggered at how comfortable, relaxing and easy it is to clock up hundreds of miles with so little effort. Yes, the 327g/km emissions and

20.2mpg might worry the wallet, but it’s a small price to pay for spa-like levels of luxury. Rolls-Royce insists its cars are bought by owner drivers – and after a week behind the wheel of the Wraith I can well believe that. Yes, sitting in the back might be a pleasant place to spend time, but the Wraith is aimed squarely at the driver and after shelling out close to a quarter of a million pounds I for one know exactly which seat I’d be occupying.

And Another Thing... The Winged Chariot by Tom Hughes I dread January. Not because of the long winter nights or postholiday credit card bills (although they aren’t much fun), I hate New Year because that’s when the Mondeo has its dreaded MOT. Could I squeeze another year’s motoring out of the old darling? The mechanic’s intake of breath was so sharp I thought he was going to hyperventilate. MOT fail! Now, I’m sure that to Jeremy Clarkson my Mondeo Ghia X is a tired old rep mobile, good only for slogging up and down the M6 driven by some dull-eyed paperclip salesman. But whenever I nestle behind the wheel (in my half leather heated seat) I am not in a Ford, rather I am in a beautiful Winged Chariot, perfect for whisking Sarah away to distant magical places, like Southport. The mechanic shook his head as the bonnet slammed shut. Sarah put a comforting hand on my shoulder. It was time to face facts; the old chap had to go. And that meant only one thing - a visit to the showroom to lock horns with a car salesman. Colin was an affable chap. As wide as he was tall, he possessed a big red face and the worst fitting suit I had ever seen. He came waddling towards us with such a swagger in his gait I thought 82

for moment he was going to announce “I’ve come for ma Boy.” He shook my hand, nodded to my car and said, “That your Deo? Great car....in its day.” “In its day? Cheeky -” I was about to give him a mouthful when Sarah interrupted me, “Shut up Tom. Now what about this one?” Sarah pointed to a new five door hatchback. Colin beamed.”Want to take her for a spin sir?” “Her? That’s a bit 1970s isn’t it? Why can’t I take “him” for a spin?” I said indignantly. “Very well sir, I’ll get the trade plates.” He glanced at Sarah, shook his head in sympathy, and handed me the keys. With Sarah sat demurely in the back we eased out of the showroom as Colin explained all about this fantastic motor. “Now Tom, this model is in the Elite trim which means that every conceivable toy is on this car. Everything you can think of as an extra, this baby’s got it.” I stared at the dashboard. “Has it got Sat Nav?” “No.” “Climate control?” “Er, no.” “Rear parking sensors?” Suddenly, Colin’s eyes lit up. “Rear parking sensors? Tom, can

you just pull over a second and put her in reverse gear for me?” I stopped the car and engaged reverse as Colin jumped out and ran to the back of the motor. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw Colin waggling his hips and waving his arms about. “Tom, what is he doing?” “I’ve really no idea.” After this strange display was over, he trotted up to the driver’s side, stuck his sweaty face through the open window and asked hopefully “Now Tom, did you hear a beep! Beep! Beep!?” “No.” Back in the car and now staring straight ahead, Colin, through gritted teeth said, “Drive on please.” After a while, we found ourselves on a narrow country road where Colin, with a conspiratorial wink whispered, “Now then Tom, do you want to see how she performs through the twisty bits?” Too embarrassed to ask what that actually meant, I smiled and began trundling along the B road, nervously creeping round an endless procession of blind bends. Exasperated, Colin began shuffling about in his seat. “Now Tom, can’t you feel it? She wants to go, come on, give her her head!”

I looked in the mirror at Sarah, who shrugged her shoulders. Colin was insistent, “Put your foot down, let’s see what this baby can do!” The engine whined as I stamped on the pedal. The bonnet lifted and the car lurched forward as around the corner we went - “Tally Ho!” Later, after Colin had exchanged insurance details with a rather miserable looking farmer, Sarah leaned down to inspect the damage. “Well a tinny thing like this is always going to come off worse against a tractor.” Waiting with Colin for that tow truck to take us back to the garage was the longest hour of my life. And so, after shelling out a small fortune on a double-wishbone something or other, my beloved Winged Chariot was back on the road. I took Sarah for a spin. I turned up the climate control to maximum. “Right Sarah darling, shall we see what this baby can do?” “Tom, just keep your eyes on the road, OK? And Tom?” “Yes my sweet?” “Keep a look out for tractors?”

Working From Home: Is It For You? Seven Key Success Factors Do a search on Google for the specific term “work from home UK” and it will return around 857 million results. It’s clearly a popular subject and since broadband became widely available in 2004, the growth in this market has been phenomenal. Indeed it is estimated that 2.8 million businesses now operate full time from home; that 1400 people start a business every week; and that home businesses contribute £284 billion to the economy each year. Many businesses operate successfully from a spare room; but sadly too many others fail. So before you take the plunge and give up the day job, consider if your business passes these sanity checks.

Don’t overestimate the growth All businesses start from £0 revenue, and most from a negative figure by the time they’ve paid their startup costs. You might have a startup fund from redundancy or inheritance, or you might actually need the money straight away. Setting up your own business is hard work so make sure it’s going to return a profit before your personal costs overtake you. 94

Watch your overheads Overheads have to be paid regardless of whether you have any business. If you are paying for stock, leases, loans, equipment rental or staff before you really need to, you can easily find you are working for nothing.

Is there a market for what you want to sell? A classic mistake is to think ‘there must be a huge market for this because nobody else does it/ makes it’. Possibly, but it’s more likely that there isn’t a demand in the first place. For your first business you really are better to go into a market where you know money is being spent rather than trying to create the market from scratch.

How many customers do you need? There are so many tales of people who start a business, win one big profitable customer who brings in 80% of the revenue month after month, only for it to go horribly wrong when the big customer changes supplier. Far better to have lots of customers on your list. If you have fifty customers, even a loss of five of them won’t seriously impact you.

Will your customers buy again? When you get the first few people

buying from you, the ideal business model says that sooner or later they’ll want to use you again. For your work from home ’lifestyle’ business, it’s best to have some customers who come back again and again.

How will people find out about you? Treat this as a launch and do as much initial marketing as you can find the time for and can afford. Advertising in this magazine (of course!), notice boards, Google adwords, social media, emailing, networking, the school gates… anything and everything you can think of.

Do you have the space? Try not to let your business spill into the general living space. Not only is this encroaching on your family’s home, but it’ll mean you’ll feel you can’t ever get away from work. A spare room is ideal of course, but if not, then a filing cabinet where you can tuck everything away at the end of the day does at least mark out the boundaries. Finally, a word of warning. If you do start your own business, it’s a legal requirement to register with HMRC as self-employed – make it top of your action list.
