NEXT ISSUE: DIARY DATES Editorial copy deadline: 15 August Advertisement copy deadline: 18 August 1st Distribution: w/c 29 August 2nd Distribution: w/c 19 September

DISTRIBUTION Discover Chandlers Ford is printed every other month and delivered in two batches. At the beginning of each odd numbered month (January, March etc) it goes to Knightwood, Valley Park, North and South Millers Dale, Central Hiltingbury, Hursley and part of Boyatt Wood. Towards the end of the same month it goes to homes north of Flexford Rd and Hiltingbury Rd, to Scantabout, Peverells Wood, Bodycoats, Chalvington, Otterbourne and more homes in Boyatt Wood.

Not for the first time, the front cover/logo on the magazine has changed. It’s a few years since the magazine was renamed Discover Chandlers Ford – originally it was The Chandlers Ford Directory (and I do still receive calls asking if we are The Chandlers Ford Directory). However, although I kept Discover at the top until people were used to it we wanted to emphasise that each of our magazines is local so the main ‘name’ on the front is now Chandlers Ford. We do also cover Boyatt Wood, Otterbourne, Hursley and Colden Common but Chandlers Ford is the main retail area so it receives prime billing. With my business partner Melanie, my husband Kevin and our team of designers and admin helpers (4 of them, all hard-working part-timers) we now run 10 magazines in the area. And there’s another ‘10’ that’s significant this month; it’s now 10 years since I started this magazine. A lot has changed in the area (we didn’t have half as many estate agents for a start!), and some things have stayed the same. I’ve put together a little history article on page 44/45. If I could change one thing about running the magazine it’s this: I do wish more people would send me local news and events. If there’s an event running and I receive the information on time, I’ll always include it in the what’s on listings. If it’s more interesting - such as the charity fundraising event for Syria on page 82 - I’ll publish an article about it. It just needs to be sent to editorial@ discovermagazines.co.uk, although submit the information as early as you can. I have often received information just a few days before it takes place, which is too late to be included. We are planning to revamp the website in the Autumn though and anything that’s sent in will be listed there. We’ve had a lovely start with the weather in June, so here’s hoping it continues and you have a wonderful summer.

HOBBIES

Have You Got The Baking Bug? by Kate McLelland Cupcakes make you smile!

In recent years baking has become a bit of a national obsession. With events such as the Sugarcraft, Cake Decorating & Baking Show visiting large conference venues in London, Birmingham and Manchester, new cake-craft shops opening in our high streets and countless community bakeoffs taking place all over the country, it would appear that the UK has been well and truly bitten by the baking bug. Home baking has always featured heavily when it comes to local fundraising events: if you visit any school fete or village fair you are almost certain to find a stall heaving with homemade cakes. But nowadays you won’t just see any old cakes displayed for sale: you’ll find creations made and decorated with real flair and passion. Much of the renewed interest in what can be achieved with butter, sugar, eggs and flour can be ascribed to the BBC’s now legendary TV

show, The Great British Bake Off, which features a team of amateur bakers (observed by expert judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry) taking part in progressively harder baking challenges over a period of ten weeks. The show promises to attract an audience of over eight million viewers when Series 5 is broadcast later this year. The first episode of GBBO traditionally kicks off with “Cakes” and it’s fitting that this aspect of baking should open the competition, as cake making and decorating has become one of the most popular hobbies in Britain today. Perhaps it is the combination of cookery and artistic skills that has captured the public’s imagination. The current trend is to create specialist cakes that are not only delicious to eat, but beautiful to look at, and bakers are now using a range of specialist tools and equipment to help them achieve stunning effects for their cake creations. A whole industry has sprung up around cake making and decorating and it’s easy to find a vast selection of professional cutters, paper cases, novelty cake tins, sprinkles, icing figures, ribbons, boxes and cake boards, either by shopping at specialist high street outlets or by searching for cake equipment suppliers

online. Cupcakes are especially popular: decorated with butter cream icing, sprinkled with edible glitter and often topped with exotic decorations, they can easily be turned into individual, quirky masterpieces. These little cakes can even be displayed on a multilayered framework (a “cupcake tower”) in place of a traditional wedding cake. The name “cupcake” first appeared in an American cookery book published in 1796. They were so named because they were baked in individual pottery cups, ramekins or moulds, the size of a small teacup. Their popularity was revived in the 2000s thanks to the US TV series “Sex and the City”, when lead characters Carrie and Miranda scoffed cupcakes from New York’s famous Magnolia Bakery as they discussed their love lives. The craze is still going strong today, with UK artisan bakeries getting in on the act, using ever more exotic ingredients and themes to tempt us. These days you can buy special tin moulds for cupcakes and it’s possible to experiment with a huge range of recipes, from the ordinary (Raspberry Swirl Cupcakes) to the bizarre (Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting). Try them out on family and friends, or if you’re feeling ambitious

you can even enter the National Cupcake Championships. You can view the entry guidelines at www. nationalcupcakeweek.co.uk but hurry, as the deadline for entries is 15th August. Although many people enjoy pottering alone in the kitchen, trying out new recipes and finding original ways to decorate their cakes, The Great British Bake Off seems to have inspired a real enthusiasm for communal baking, whether that’s about learning together or indulging in friendly competition. It’s understandable to want to share your baking triumphs – and disasters – with someone else, and participating in a group can encourage you to try out different techniques and develop new skills. You can look up cake decorating courses in your local area by going to www.cakedecoratingcourses. co.uk or alternatively visit your

local library to find out if they hold a list. If you fancy getting away from it all in order to really focus on your art, then there are a number of cake decorating short breaks and holidays available, with one day courses costing from around £100 (not including accommodation). If you want a real holiday experience you could sign up for a cake-making course in France, with accommodation and meals included for £649 per person. See www.frenchcakebreaks.com for more details. For those who simply don’t have the money to spend on courses (having already laid out a small fortune on gourmet sprinkles), there are a number of tutorials on YouTube (www.youtube.com) that will teach you everything you need to know, from creating a basic cake mixture to advanced piping techniques.

If you don’t enjoy learning alone, you can always invite a friend around to experiment with you, or get together with neighbours to create your own version of the Great British Bake Off. One thing’s for certain: there’ll be no lack of volunteers to help when it comes to tasting the results!

Sunny Summer Days... Or Not By Ted Bruning

Ahhh, it’s sunny July at last; the sky is blue; the air is warm and your neighbourhood smells delightfully of sun-tan lotion and barbecue. Of course, being British, we understand that our summers are never a glorious succession of hot dry days and long evenings of tennis and Pimms. Indeed, it has even been known to rain sometimes. But let’s forget about the weather for a moment and focus on the climate – the difference being that the weather is what actually happens to you, while the climate is what weather becomes when people start analyzing it. The other difference is that climate is almost predictable but weather most certainly isn’t. The wedding planners, barbecue chefs, church fête organisers etcetera want to know when is the best time for the wedding/barbecue/fête/day-trip or whatever? But the best answer is – and it’s a truly British answer, this – none of them. And any of them. So let’s narrow it down. Which is usually the least rainy month of summer? It has to be July, surely. 20

Wrong! July is usually the wettest, actually, with an average of 101mm over the five years 200812. Then – another big surprise – was August with 91.6mm, then September with 77.1mm, and taking gold by a healthy margin, was June with only 50.5mm. Mind you, June 2012 was also the rainiest month of all five summers in the sample with a squelching 157.8mm, and the two biggest rain-induced flash floods in living in memory weren’t in July but August – Lynmouth in 1952 and Boscastle in 2004. This, of course, being the difference between weather and climate. All right then, which is the sunniest, i.e. which has the best average of sunny hours per day (which we shall call SHPD for the sake of brevity)? This one has to be July, right? Uh-uh. The 10year average for July is 6 SHPD, better than August at 5.5 SHPD and September (when of course the days are shorter anyway) at only 5 SHPD; but the winner is once again June with 6.9 SHPD. Still, July 2013 racked up an average of 8.2 SHPD, which is a record in recent years. July is, at least, the warmest month of summer, with average temperatures ranging from 13.723.4C over the past 20 years; but only just. August has been a close challenger, with an average

low just edging ahead of July’s at 13.8C but an average high just missing at 23.1C; so not much in it there. June and September, though, fall woefully short with ranges of 11.8-21C and 11.420C – it’s almost as if they aren’t even trying. All this, of course, depends on where you are. The further north you go the colder it gets, right? Well, yes; but not directly because you’re north – England has vineyards at the same latitude that Canada has polar bears. The skies above us are a battleground where four sets of weather fight for supremacy: Western Scotland gets its from the Maritime Polar region (cold and wet); Eastern Scotland and the North of England get theirs from the Continental Polar (cold and dry); Wales and the West Country are at the mercy of the Maritime Tropical (warm and wet); and East Anglia and the South of England bask in the Continental Tropical (warm and dry). Hence the hottest day on record was 10th August 2003 in Faversham, Kent (38.5C), while the coldest was 30th December 1995 at Altnaharran, Sutherland (-27.2C). Well, that’s me decided, then. This year’s barbecues will be in Faversham. Which is handy, because that’s where my Mum lives.

Your Legal Options For Divorce Q: I am considering divorce and have been told about ‘Mediation’. How does that work? Lucy, Chandlers Ford

A: Mediation now has a

major role in the future for the resolution of both matrimonial and any related childcare cases. Mediation is a private and confidential dispute resolution process in which an independent, neutral person, the ‘Mediator’, is appointed to support both parties in reaching an amicable settlement before there is a need to spend further time

and often a great deal of money in Court. It is a process which, rather than looking back into the history of their relationship, is focused on each individual and their futures without ignoring the emotion and pain of separation. Mediation provides the forum to calmly explore the motivations and agendas of parties in order to potentially open up a whole range of solutions that can satisfy both individuals and reach a mutually acceptable, lasting agreement for the future. Through mediation, a dialogue can usually be established that enables couples to work together. It can offer not only critical examination of issues but also creative solutions beyond the powers and remit of the judicial process in Court. At the core of mediation is the concept of confidentiality. Mediation involves not only joint meetings attended by the mediator and both parties, but also private meetings between the mediator and the

individual parties alone. This can usually help avoid the raw emotion that is inevitable in a lot of initial face-to-face meetings. What is discussed in those meetings remains entirely confidential, although the financial aspects can be disclosed. Mediation is an ideal mechanism for dealing with disagreements as well as being an aid to the negotiation process. Since April 2011, anyone contemplating court proceedings must attend a MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting) to have the process and options explained to them. If they do not, a judge may refer the proceedings to mediation at a later date. We now have two fully qualified Mediators at Eric Robinson Solicitors and they have made a video explaining their role. To view it, go to www.ericrobinson.co.uk, click on the tab ‘Services for You’ and then choose the ‘Family Mediation’ page. Hope this helps, Lucy, and all the best. By Emma Cole

LIFE LIST

Mowers and strimmers - it’s bad enough when it’s your own and you have to cut the grass, but the sporadic, deafening noise pollution all around is enough to send anyone scurrying indoors. There’s no excuse now not to do all those outdoor painting jobs you’ve been putting off since last year. Wearing shorts again – I’m not sure the world-atlarge will ever be ready for the sight of my milkbottle white pins. Stripey, buzzy houseguests who don’t know when - or how - to leave, even when you give them directions and point with a newspaper. A steering wheel and dashboard you could fry an egg on, or your fingertips. Barbecues - a cross between a fire safety film and a digestion test. Lobsters on the beach - the human kind. More flesh on display, from both sexes, than a butcher’s shop window - and not always so tastefully arranged. Traffic - there’s always some idiot on the road with a caravan, in front of me with my caravan. Bitey things - and always when you least expect them. Roadworks - it wouldn’t be summer without endless lines of sunbathing roadcones. Just when we’ve got used to the idea of summer being back, it gets rained off. 26

TECHNOLOGY

Happy Snapping How to get the best from your phone photos and videos Think of the last time you took a photograph or recorded a video. What did you use? For most of us, the answer will be “my phone”: in a very short space of time phone cameras have replaced traditional cameras for most people’s everyday shooting. However, not everyone is getting the most from their phone’s camera - and a few apps and accessories can make an enormous difference. One of the most common problems with smartphone clips is the washed-out effect you get when you use the flash. While some recent smartphones use LED flashes to try and address this, it’s better if you just turn the flash off altogether: apps such as Google Camera, Apple’s iPhoto and Camera+ enable you to change the exposure, which affects how much light the camera lets in: the longer the exposure, the better the low-light performance. Another problem that affects many photos and videos is camera shake. While many phones attempt to compensate for this they can’t get rid of it completely, so if you’re finding blur is a problem it’s a good idea to invest in a phone 28

tripod such as Joby’s GripTight (around £20), which can grip to almost anything and ensure shake-free shooting. If you fancy getting creative with your camera there are lots of options to choose from, from cheap and cheerful wide-angle lenses to Sony’s truly impressive QX10 Lens. It isn’t cheap - the RRP is £179 - but it adds a wireless, 18 megapixel lens with 10X optical zoom to deliver photographs you simply won’t believe came from a smartphone. Another way to get creative is to use specialist apps. The aforementioned Camera+ and iPhoto enable you to apply filters that make your images look ancient, while 8mm does the same for video by applying vintage camera filters ranging from Super 8-style footage to what looks like an early black and white movie. iStopMotion makes it easy to create Wallace and Gromit-style stop motion videos, while Filmic Pro offers a range of professional video features that turn an iPhone into a powerful high definition video camera. There’s one big problem with smartphone shooting, though,

and that’s the smartphone itself: the screen is too small and the speakers too quiet for you to spot audio and video issues that are really obvious on a big TV. For best results it’s always a good idea to edit your images and video on your computer, and there are several ways to transfer it: via the USB cable that came with your device, or by taking out the memory card (if your phone uses one) and popping it into a card reader. Many recent PCs have memory card slots that take the industry standard SD/SDHC memory cards, but if you don’t have one or you want the option to use multiple memory card formats it’s worth investing £10 or so in a memory card reader that plugs into a spare USB socket. There’s no shortage of software for editing images on PCs and Macs: both Mac OS X and Windows have decent built-in image editors, while the free paint.net (on PC) and The GIMP (PC and Mac) deliver professional image editing for free. You can get decent video editing for free too: Lightworks on PC is great, as is Apple’s own iMovie. Both programs make it easy to clean up and edit your clips.

News from Chandlers Ford & Winchester MP Steve Brine Get the message? - Every so often the spectre of phone masts (literally) looms over us and it was all hands on deck recently as plans for a greatly extended mast, above homes and the Hiltingbury schools, emerged. Cllr Judith Grajewski and I had to move fast to work with residents over what was a shambles from the start when it came to consulting on what was planned. Our action paid off in the end as Eastleigh Borough Council and Vodafone, to be fair to them both, recognised this was not their finest hour and the application was withdrawn. There is a fair to middling chance that it will return so watch this space and we (if noone else) will stay in touch.

MOTORING

Porsche Macan By James Baggott, editor of CarDealerMagazine.co.uk Porsche is set to bolster its position as market leader in the premium SUV sector with the launch of this, its new mid-sized Macan. An impressive range of engines, stylish exterior design and the German marque’s typically upmarket interiors all feature, but will this suave sports utility vehicle carve out a market for itself quite like the Cayenne? We find out...

Agile on the road

What is it? Porsche will tell you at great length that the new Macan is not a downsized, shrunken version of the Cayenne SUV. They’ll gladly regale you with tales that the Macan’s shape takes great inspiration from the 911 and the 918 hypercar. They’ll even let slip that during the Macan’s testing regime, the 911 was used as a benchmark for the results. The fact is, however, the new Macan is based – loosely, it must be said – on the Audi Q5 and is a new entrant into the hugely profitable and popular compact SUV sector. It expands Porsche’s SUV range by 100 per cent and, judging by the larger Cayenne’s sales history, it will sell by the bucketload.

What’s under the bonnet? One of the reasons the Cayenne has proved such a hit for Porsche in the UK has been the choice of engines – and the Macan is no different. There’s the option of a 335bhp 3.0-litre, twinturbocharged petrol or a 254bhp 3.0-litre twin-turbo diesel. What with its 143mph top speed and combined fuel consumption of more than 44mpg, the latter is predicted to take 60 per cent of UK sales. The range is topped off with the 394bhp, 3.6-litre twin-turbocharged Turbo – it’s 36

ludicrously fast, but doesn’t put the lower powered V6s to shame as they are equally punchy. There is, however, a fourth option. Porsche will sell you one with a 2.0-litre, turbocharged four-cylinder unit pushing out 234bhp. Badged just ‘Macan’ it’s order-only and isn’t set to be a big hit here in the UK.

What’s the spec like? For now at least, the range is simple. Both the petrol and diesel Macan S cost £43,300 and (surprisingly for a Porsche) come well specified with an electric tailgate, part leather/ part alcantara upholstery, dual-zone climate control, MP3 connectivity and 18-inch alloys. The Turbo at £59,300 adds 19-inch wheels with red brake calipers, sat nav, Bose sound system, leather upholstery with electric front seats and alcantara roof lining. There is of course a healthy options list which includes such pleasantries as Porsche’s PTV torque vectoring system (£1,012), self-levelling air suspension (£1,004 and a first for the compact SUV sector) and the Sport Chrono Package (£728). All come with Porsche’s excellent seven-speed PDK automatic transmission.

Any rivals? The Macan’s chief rival is the

hugely popular and super-stylish Range Rover Evoque. There’s also the BMW X1 and the Audi Q5 but none are as sporting as the Macan. That’s a privilege you have to pay for though.

What’s it like to drive? All that marketing hype about this being the first sports car compact SUV is true – it’s a finehandling thing. The steering is as crisp as it probably could be and thanks to 90 per cent of the car’s power being pushed to fat tyres at the rear, it’s well-balanced, too. It rides well and even when Sport and Sport + modes are prodded, the ride is firm but never unbearable. The Turbo is deeply impressive and will reach 60mph in just 4.6 seconds. But the Turbo is really for the downsizing Porsche enthusiast. There’s no doubt the Macan will appeal to conquest customers and they’ll be more than happy

with the Macan S in either petrol or diesel. The former has a lovely dainty-ness to it and has more than enough power. But it’s the diesel which is, obviously, the best all-rounder. It has more than enough power and performance and it won’t break the bank... too much.

Model: Porsche Macan S Diesel

The Verdict

Max speed: 143mph

Just over a decade ago, Porsche caused quite some controversy producing its first ever SUV. The Cayenne wasn’t what you’d call pretty but it successfully married true Porsche handling in a more user-friendly and everyday package. The new Macan takes that to even greater levels. With ample seating for five and loading space of 1,500 litres when the seats are folded, it’s a practical proposition. Its smaller dimensions make it far more agile on the road and it genuinely feels sporty to drive –

Price: £43,300 Engine: 3.0-litre, turbocharged V6 diesel Power: 254bhp, 580Nm

0-60mph: 6.1 seconds MPG: 46.3 mpg (combined) Emissions: 159g/km CO2 think of an upscaled, four-wheel drive Boxster and you wouldn’t be too far wrong. It’s even rather good looking in our eyes. There’s no reason why Porsche won’t have a ball with this car. In our opinion, you’re looking at Stuttgart’s new UK best-seller

Launching a business from home in 2004 We run our magazines from home and this in itself is a reflection of changes not just in the last 10 years but in the few years before that. Even 15 years ago it would have been impossible because – incredibly – broadband was not widely available at that time. So although the reflections here are about our business, the changes have affected us all.

In the beginning Being between jobs I was conscious each time I looked at my bank balance that ‘something’ needed to be done. However my children were only 9 and 7 at the time, so whatever I did had to either be really well paid to cover childcare, or flexible enough to enable me to only work in school hours and evenings. The idea of the local magazine was a Eureka! moment, although I’m not really sure why. I’d never sold advertising and I didn’t have a design background. Still it felt like something I could do and met the ‘need to be flexible’ criteria, so in I jumped.

Taking advertising bookings Then: When I contacted businesses it was nearly always by phone or in person. I had a fairly limited number of enquiries by email. People generally called from landlines because, even if they did have a mobile, calls were expensive – and they were only mobile phones, not smartphones. When I’d designed an advert I had to print it out and either take it round to the business or put it in the post. Sometimes I received instructions by fax. Now: I can only think of one or two customers who don’t have email, and 4 out of 5 calls are from or to a mobile. We not

44

only email the adverts for approval, but our invoices are sent out that way too. And if we want to remind someone that an email is waiting to be read, we send a text direct from a PC.

The magazine itself Then: It was black and white throughout, but the cover was coloured card with black plus a single colour print on it. The look was ‘amateur’ and each advert was a slightly different size (which was a challenge when I came to move them around each month). The adverts themselves were very homemade – I’m no designer. The first edition was 24 pages and was delivered to 2000 properties. Now: We are full colour throughout. I have a wonderful designer who I’ve worked with for some years. She lives in Fife in Scotland! We don’t need to speak on the phone – we use Skype for messages – and everything she produces is put onto a special internet area that everybody in our team can access. This edition is 96 pages and will be delivered to 14000 properties.

Printing Then: Once the magazine was all finished and ready to be printed, it was copied from my PC onto a CD and then we’d drive up to the printer in Basingstoke and hand it

over. It’d take about 10 – 14 days to get the delivery back to us. Now: We log on to our printer’s website and just upload the finished file in the evening before our printer’s deadline. By around 9am the next morning the printer will let us know if everything is OK. Delivery is within 6 days.

Paying bills Then: Nearly all payments both in and out were either by cheque or standing order. Doing our accounts was very much a manual process and it often took several full days to do the books, and that was with just one magazine. Now: Most people pay by direct debit or direct banking with a few by standing order or card, and cheques are quite rare. But you know, I actually really like receiving a cheque in the post, much more satisfying than just seeing a line on a bank statement. My accounts are all online and take a couple of hours each month, for all 10 magazines.

Getting it through your door

routes. We have some adults and a lot of 13 to 18 year olds. Two of Kate’s children have been distributors for at least the last 6 years, with just one left for me to recruit.

Kate & Sophie

What hasn’t changed Amazingly some of our advertisers have been with us for the almost whole 10 years! Live-in Design Eric took the back cover for issue 1 and his business is still there now

M Fyall Design Mike has been painting properties for over 25 years in Chandlers Ford, and has advertised with us for nearly 10 years G Nicholls Flooring Geoff has had many years supplying and fitting carpets and flooring, whatever the fashion in our homes DJ Satellites & Aerials Dave lived just round the corner from me and although he’s moved, he’s still local Premier Garden Design Simon had just started his business 10 years ago and I knew his sister from the school run

Oh boy, was this my biggest mistake when I started. “2000 homes” I thought, “that won’t take long, I can do it myself”. Pah! I started on one of the hottest days of the year, in Lakewood Road. After an hour when I had delivered to just 60 homes, I realised I had a problem. An SOS call to one of the other school mums, Kate (pictured top right with daughter Sophie), who helped out and after over a week they were all delivered, but I could hardly walk for blisters.

Knightwood Carpentry (now trading as Willow Madison) Marcus was also just starting out and has now built up his business through a reputation for excellent work

Now: We have a team of distributors who do between 100 and 400 each. They have trolleys and bags, proper route maps, insurance and checking on the

IMB PC (Now trading as Chandlers Ford Computer Services) Ian has seen the need for computer repairs at home grow hugely over the last decade.

From Old to New Danny is a master craftsman in upholstery and has kept my furniture going through years of wear Village Veterinary Centre Patrick and Sarah are still going strong in Pilgrims Close, Chandlers Ford.

What else happened in 2004? Facebook is launched as a social networking site (originally called Thefacebook) only open to students from Harvard by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and fellow students Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. Great Britain participates in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens winning a total of 9 gold, 9 silver and 12 bronze medals. The government announces plans to prohibit smoking in most enclosed public places (including workplaces) within the next three years. Piers Morgan is dismissed as editor of the Daily Mirror after the newspaper published fake pictures of Iraqi prisoner abuse It is announced that a record of nearly 2,600,000 new cars were sold in the United Kingdom during 2003. (In 2013 it was 2,260,000). A rebranding of the Football League sees Division One become the Football League Championship, Division Two become League One and Division Three become League Two England are knocked out of Euro 2004 by Portugal, on penalties. As I said, some things never change! 45

The ABCs of Core Stability Have you been doing Pilates or ‘core stability training’ for years with little benefit? This is surprisingly commonplace. There are many myths and bad practices surrounding ‘core stability’. What is core stability? The core is actually a canister of deep pelvic, abdominal and spinal muscles that work together to control movement. In fact, ’movement control’ is a more suitable term than stability and optimising the muscular canister will improve your ABCs: Body Alignment, Biomechanics and Movement Control. A healthy body has optimal ABCs and utilises many different movement control strategies to meet the demands of our day-to-day activities and sports.

However as we age or pick up an injury, our bodies will compensate. We can lose our ABCs and muscles become tight and/or weak. We develop muscle imbalances and movement quality is sacrificed as our body adapts so we can carry on with daily life and activity. Unfortunately this is a vicious circle of adaptation, and eventually the body will only take so much, resulting in more pain and injury. The muscular control system can be likened to instruments in an orchestra. When injured or in pain, the muscles are working, but not in harmony or synchrony. Some muscles will be too strong (overactive) and some too weak (inactive). Some muscles will have poor timing, contracting too

early or too late. This disharmony, between muscles results in: • Poor movement and control (often described as “tight legs” “a stiff back” or “weakness”) • Pain • Recurrent injuries “It’s important not to just treat the injury but have a holistic approach which also identifies and addresses the underlying movement strategy and control. We find Pilates an excellent way of addressing this.” says, goPhysio’s Clinical Director, Paul Baker MCSP. goPhysio Therapy Tel: 023 8025 3317 www.gophysioterapy.co.uk

BEAUTY

Perfect Nails By Helen Taylor

You might spend a lot of time and money buying-up and trying-out the latest skincare, hair care and cosmetic products, but do you pay as much attention to your nails? It’s certainly easy to overlook your hands and nails, but you really shouldn’t, because they’re often as noticeable to new people as your face; after all, a handshake is the first introduction. Un-manicured nails can really let the side down, especially when you’re otherwise well-groomed and neatly presented. But there’s no denying that it’s hard to keep your nails in tip-top condition. Washing-up, cleaning, cooking, and all those other unavoidable daily chores pose a threat to nails, not to mention cold weather, regular hand washing and the use of alcoholbased hand sanitizers. Even so, it’s worth establishing a hand and nail care 54

routine and then planning a time every couple of weeks when you can treat yourself to a visit to your local nail salon. There’s more than one option though so we’ve taken an in-depth look at three of the most recent - and popular - nail services.

CND Shellac Nails Shellac has definitely been one of the most popular nail services of recent years. Its simple application, smudge-proof finish and effective staying power have secured legions of loyal followers. Applied much like a regular nail polish, Shellac only requires a few minutes of curing time under a special UV lamp between coats. When you leave the salon your nail polish will be completely dry and you can enjoy chip-proof, glossy, lasting colour that stays looking great for at least 14 days. In fact, Shellac often stays looking so good that it only really needs to be removed when an obvious gap has emerged due to natural nail growth. It also offers the benefit of protecting your nails against breakage meaning you can keep the length much longer than you might usually be able to.

When you are ready to have the Shellac removed, a set of foils soaked in acetone are wrapped round your fingers, although some salons may speed the process by asking you to put your fingertips into a bowl of acetone. This soaking process takes about 10 minutes and then the old polish is gently scraped off and nails buffed to prepare for the new coat. There is no ‘infill’ option – even if your polish still looks great, when it has grown out you’ll need to start again. Shellac isn’t suitable for everyone though; if your nails are weak, brittle or splitting opting for a set of Shellac nails - or any artificial nail enhancement - isn’t the best option. Nails and nail beds need to be healthy before application.

Minx Nails If it’s statement nails you’re after then Minx Nails are the perfect choice for you. Bringing fashion to your fingertips, Minx have been a favourite with celebrities everywhere since stepping into the spotlight a few years ago. Offering a vast choice of designs in show-stopping colours, patterns and prints, there’s no chance you’ll ever get bored when

you choose a set of Minx nails. Minx work on both natural and artificially enhanced nails. Before application nails are given a basic manicure. Minx is a solid film with an adhesive backing that is heat activated - that’s why nails and Minx are heated before application begins. The heat allows Minx to take on the natural curve of the nail and bond to the surface effectively. Whilst still underneath a special infrared lamp, the Minx is smoothed out and filed to fit with the nail. The process is very gentle on natural nails and with a waterproof seal, it means they won’t get damaged when you swim, bath, wash-up or do any other day-to-day tasks. The seal is only broken when they are removed. They’ll last around 14 days.

Removal is easy - the product is heated up, the seal is broken and the Minx is peeled off.

Long lasting Nail polish You might wonder why anyone would still have traditional nail polish when Shellac and Minx last so much longer. There are several reasons. Firstly you might want a shade for a special occasion or to go with a particular outfit, without necessarily wanting to keep the same colour for weeks. It’s quicker to put on normal polish and much quicker to take it off. This not only saves time, but will usually be a lower priced treatment or you can do it at home. Particularly for a pedicure, when normal polish will often last weeks anyway, this might be a better option. And the choice of colours is

much greater so you can get that perfect match if you need it. Some of the new salon polishes dry very quickly too (such as CND’s Vinylux), so whilst it won’t be as instantly ‘set’ as Shellac or Minx, your finger and toenails will be complete dry and hard within a couple of hours.

GARDENING

Mediterranean Magic By Pippa Greenwood Your very own relaxing haven

If you can’t get away this year, how about creating your own Mediterranean hotspot in your garden? Even if you do manage to escape to the sun for a week or two this year, you’ll still have the rest of the summer at home and a little slice of Italy, France or Greece outside your back door will bring happy memories flooding back.

The first thing to do when making a Mediterranean corner in your garden, is to choose the sunniest spot available – it’ll not only make sitting out there more enjoyable, but will also mean that you can install some serious sun-loving plants too. Painting the nearby house, shed or garage wall with white masonry paint will help to create the right atmosphere and look. At the same time it will help to reflect our sunlight – often a bit washed out compared to more southern climes - so providing a stronger light for the type of plants that appreciate it. Mediterranean gardens often make full use of the walls and any other vertical surfaces, so put up pot-rings, pot-hangers and brackets with hanging baskets, pots and wall baskets and cram them full of plants. If the containers are small they will need very regular watering so go for some of the more drought-tolerant plants such as geraniums, pelargoniums and sedums. Plants in pots are a must and if possible choose stone or terracotta containers as these add to the Mediterranean feel.

66

If you want to make brand new pots look more weathered try painting them with a solution of plain yoghurt – it may sound crazy but this will help to encourage rapid colonisation by mosses, algae and lichens all of which will help to give that well-loved look. Any new hard landscaping such as wall, paths or patios and terraced surfaces will look best in natural stone and there are now also gorgeous looking terracotta tiles available that are suitable for use in the garden. All these help to give the right feel and bring about a definite warmth. Terracotta tiles can also have a storageheater effect too – after a long, hot day they will have absorbed a good deal of heat and this will then be released gradually in the evening making it even more appealing to sit out and enjoy that glass of something continental. Add interest to a vertical surface - be it a wall with supports attached or an arch or pergola - by planting a vine. They have attractive leaves and there are plenty to choose from that will fruit well in our climate. You may not be able to create your

own vintage but the vines will look gorgeous especially when draped with a few bunches of grapes. Glazed tiles, wall-hangings and even the odd ornament or two can also add to the Mediterranean look, but make sure you choose items that won’t be instantly bleached by the sun. If you have wooden garden furniture which is past its best, paint it white or a vivid blue, and buy a brightly coloured tablecloth. Eating alfresco will instantly make you feel like you are on holiday. If you look at photos of Mediterranean scenes, you’ll notice that much of the hard landscaping is ‘shabby-chic’. Rough plastering, crumbly mortar and plants growing in cracks create an authentic feel.

Try growing your own oranges or lemons. It is easier than you might have thought and with our generally milder winters some gardeners are even managing to keep these plants outside all year round with only the minimum of protection. Growing your citrus tree in a good-sized terracotta pot means that you can move it into a more protected spot if necessary. With their wonderful silvery grey leaves and their often rather untidy or gnarled shape, olives too are a plant well worth considering. These Mediterranean classics are now readily available in many garden centres. In warmer parts of the country and especially in city-centre gardens crops of edible olives are now becoming more common too. Olives are best grown in a large container unless you have a warm

garden and a very well-drained soil as they hate winter wet. Some plants just spell out Mediterranean Magic – try geraniums and pelargoniums, aeoniums and sempervivums, rosemary, thyme, oregano and pretty well anything with silvery foliage. Plant up beds, borders and pots for colour and don’t forget, that in the case of the herbs, your new holiday destination will also benefit from a subtle Mediterranean aroma too. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ vegetable collection, great plants for September planting and regular advice emails from Pippa, and a great range of gardening products including Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh & Envirofleece

LIFE BEGINS

Three Essential Tips for the IT Phobic By Kate McLelland

“I was too busy bringing up the children”, “I’m not technically minded”, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. Whatever excuse you’ve used over the years to avoid learning about information technology, I’m afraid that excuse is no longer valid.

These days so many of the things we do are dependent on the internet and in future years our interaction with the online world is set to increase still further. With innovations such as paying for goods and services via your mobile phone about to take off, there has never been a better time to become IT-savvy. So if you’ve never held a mouse in your hand (except for the furry kind) and you haven’t yet experienced the joy of “googling” a useless piece of information, prepare for the world as you know it to change beyond all recognition.

Tip One: get hold of a computer Do you intend to buy a computer or borrow someone else’s? Buying a computer doesn’t necessarily mean a huge financial outlay (although ironically you will probably need to look online to find the best deals). There are Microsoft-authorised dealers from whom you can buy a “bundle” of refurbished computer equipment (including hard drive, monitor, mouse, keyboard, software and a one year warranty) for under £200. Allow a further £30£60+VAT for a local computer engineer to set up the equipment if you don’t have anyone who can do it for you. 76

If you prefer a portable version you can buy a new laptop computer from about £300 upwards. Smaller, tablet computers are available from £220 but if you like a traditional keyboard you may find it harder to get to grips with the tablet’s touchscreen functions. Buying is clearly the best option, as having your own computer gives you the opportunity to learn at your own pace. If you are visiting a local library to use their computers, you may need to book in advance. Borrowing is fine if you have a friend or neighbour willing to give you access to their computer. However, a word of warning: surfing the internet can be addictive and you may find yourself tempted to outstay your welcome!

Tip two: find a good teacher If you’ve never used a computer before it may take you a while to get used to using a mouse and navigating around the screen. Playing an onscreen game of Solitaire it a good way to pick up the basic techniques of clicking, double clicking and dragging. Once you’ve mastered the basic operation of mouse and screen you’ll need someone to show you

how everything else works, and at this point you have two options: ask someone you know to teach you, or go for professional help. Asking a friend or relative is the cheaper option, but you should choose your tutor with caution. Younger people – for whom anything IT-related comes as second nature – may be a little less patient when it comes to explaining how to use a computer than someone closer to your own age. In September and January many of the local colleges start courses teaching you how to become IT literate, and you may also enjoy the experience of learning with like-minded people. Finally Age UK can help you find a computer course in your area. You can call them on 0800 169 6565 or alternatively check with your library to find a local training centre.

Tip three: don’t panic! Computer circuits are used in everything from washing machines to mobile phones these days, so computers should really have lost their ability to scare us. Don’t treat yours like an unexploded bomb: after all, it’s only a box with some clever pieces of kit inside. Don’t worry about making mistakes or losing information: most of the errors you will make can be easily corrected and information can be backed up to avoid losses. Buy a notepad and jot things down from the moment you start. A lot of strange-sounding language has built up around IT-related equipment: you’ll get the hang of it eventually but meanwhile just keep calm and write down any words you don’t understand. There are a number of books available from high street newsagents that explain

computing in very simple, basic terms, so it may help to buy one of those, particularly if it has a glossary in the back. Not just for bargains A recent study in America discovered that older people who regularly spent time online were one third less likely to suffer from depression than their peers who did not use the internet. The study, which contacted 3,075 people, found that access to the internet helped with issues of loneliness and social isolation. Out of all the reasons offered by the IT phobic for not learning basic computing skills, the ultimate excuse is probably “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. Phobics may therefore be dismayed to hear that the same US study found people in their 80s, 90s and even their 100s were still capable of learning to use a computer.

LOCAL EVENT

Syrian Fundraiser Local resident Nicky Head has arranged a fundraising event which will take place on Sunday 10th August, from 11:00am - 4:00pm on the Fryern recreation ground in Chandlers Ford. Nicky has taken the Syria cause to heart and says: “To me Syria isn’t that far away. Horrific things are happening to our fellow human beings, and I can’t sit back and say “that’s sad, but you can’t save everyone”. It’s true you can’t save everyone, but I live in a country that gives more money to animal charities than it does people charities each year, and that makes me feel ashamed to be human. So I decided to set up this fundraising event and it is shaping up to be a fabulous event, with more being added to the event list every day. On the day we'll have local stall sellers, music and dancing from local groups, an arts and crafts marquee for the children (where they can design their own wooden heart badge, as well as other wonderful craft activities), a bouncy castle and ice-cream van. The charity Shelterbox will also be attending, to show the community their tents they distribute, as well as the boxes containing life-saving aid. We would like the public to bring along a picnic (if the weather allows), so we can have a community picnic on the field. Our local scout groups are getting involved, and are helping us run the event on the day. We will also be selling pre-loved children's toys, clothes and books to raise extra funds, and we have the Mayor and Mayoress Tony and Janice Noyce attending to give a speech and officially open our event.” You can follow the event on www.facebook.com/ withsyriacommunity. All the funds raised on the day will go to the charity Shelterbox and their Syria appeal. 82

SHORT STORY

Three’s a Crowd by Jackie Brewster Gordon and Merle set off just after dawn. For two hours they navigated unfamiliar roads on their way to the airport, and the atmosphere became increasingly tense. Gordon refused to stop and ask for directions, and Merle lost confidence in her map reading after mistaking the motorway for a river. They’d passed the same garage twice when Merle cried out, “I’ve just remembered something!” “We did lock the front door”, Gordon said. “Not that”. She opened the glove compartment and took out a black box. “Mother lent me her sat nav. She said it would come in handy”. Merle peered at the screen, “it says the destination is already set. How considerate of her”. Gordon was suspicious; he’d never describe his mother-in-law as considerate. With authority, a lady’s voice said, “turn around”. “Better do as she says”. Merle laughed. The holiday had been a last minute thing. Merle’s cousin had kindly offered them use of her two bedroom villa in Spain. They’d found some cheap flights, although it meant a long drive to the airport. Gordon had grumbled about the cost of airport parking, but Gordon grumbled about the cost of everything. 86

They needed a break. For the last few weeks Merle’s mother, Connie, had been staying with them while the sale of her house went through. Gordon tolerated his mother-in-law in small doses. What she’d promised to be a weekend stay had turned into four excruciatingly long weeks. Connie even had the nerve to hint that their villa was big enough for all three of them, especially as her new home was so close to the airport. Thankfully Gordon prided himself on being the sort of man who didn’t take hints. For the next hour the sat nav lady took control of the situation. She had a condescending tone that reminded Gordon of Connie. It was uncomfortably like having her in the car with them, and his nerves were becoming increasingly frayed. “Looks like we’ve hit rush hour”. Merle worried, “I’d hoped we’d be there by now”. Gordon sniped, “What does the sat nav say?” Merle checked the screen. “She says, ‘arriving in five minutes’. There’s a left turn for the airport. Thank goodness”. “Take the next right”, the sat nav ordered curtly. “Perhaps she knows a short cut?” Merle suggested nervously. Gordon frowned, and indicated right. “That sign said Lockington”, Gordon said. “Isn’t that where Connie’s moved to?”

“Take the first left at the roundabout”. The sat nav continued. With a feeling of dread Gordon did as he was told. They passed a pub called The Brittle Sticks. “That’s odd”, Merle said. “I’m sure Mother said her new local was called that”. “Take the next left”, the sat nav ordered. Gordon grudgingly obeyed. “You have arrived at your destination”, the sat nav declared. They pulled up outside a bungalow with a ‘Sold’ sign on the drive. It was not the airport. “Yoo hoo!” Connie waved opening the front door, “you’ve taken your time. Room for a little one?” She opened the car door and climbed inside. “What a nice surprise”. Gordon said through gritted teeth. “Don’t panic dear!” Connie laughed, “I’m only coming as far as the airport with you, then bringing your car back. I know how much Gordon hates paying for parking. Your car can have a free holiday on my drive.” “You’re very considerate”, Gordon said. “I am aren’t I?” Connie snapped on her seatbelt. “Now, would you like me to give you directions?”
