Chandlers Ford No 1 Community Magazine 11 local editions 145,000 circulation
In the last few years there has been a lot of ‘chatter’ about how printed material is dying, and how the internet has taken over the information world. Yet this Discover magazine is Tania Houston not only still here, but in fact doing rather well. We still have people telling us they like it, and advertisers receiving calls from local residents. I work all day on my PC and have my smartphone with me the rest of the time. But if I want the number to call the doctors, I reach for the magazine, it’s much quicker. When I want to see what group to join or what event I could go to, it’s easier to scan down a couple of printed pages. When I want to find a local plumber, electrician or beautician, I’d rather get a quick summary of what they do from an advert. Yes, I’ll often look at their website before I call, but my starting point is from paper. There has to be a reason for you to open the magazine each month (as well as looking for a local business) and for you to want to keep hold of it. For example, we do put a lot of research time into our events listings and local groups, and we would welcome more. If your event or group is free, charity or very low cost, we’ll include you without charge. You can submit by email at editorial@ discovermagazines.co.uk or by phone on 02380 266388 option 4. Until next time.

Saving for Children What are the Best Options? By Ann Haldon
Children’s savings accounts provide a great way to build a nest egg for later life, perhaps for driving lessons or to fund a gap year, and are a good way to introduce the subject of money management.
Putting some of their pocket money away each week encourages good financial habits, and teaches children the mechanics and rewards of saving - why they might have to wait before they buy something, plus the benefits of gaining compound interest through long-term saving. We look at three savings options below that could be ideal for your child. These are products that incorporate a range of features and benefits, including tax-free status, instant access, and longer savings terms. So let’s start with a product that was first introduced in 2011:
Junior ISAs Junior ISAs are available to children under the age of 18 who don’t already have a Child Trust Fund. New legislation has recently been introduced to allow the transfer of monies from a Child Trust Fund into a Junior ISA, however, and this is due to take effect from April 2015. The contribution limit for a Junior ISA is £4,000 for the 2014-15 tax year, and there are two types of account available: • Cash Junior ISA: offering taxfree interest and instant access • Stocks and Shares Junior ISA: cash is invested in stocks and shares, with no tax paid on dividends or capital growth Children are entitled to open one of each of these accounts, and 6
although parents or guardians can open and manage them, the money belongs to the child. Withdrawals by children are not allowed until they turn 18, but they can manage their own accounts when they reach 16 years of age. The Junior ISA will be in the child’s name, but parents and guardians opening the account are the ‘registered contacts’ as far as the bank or building society is concerned.
NS&I Children’s Bonds These are tax-free investments that run for a 5-year term. They can be purchased by a parent, guardian, grandparent or great grandparent on behalf of a child, and each ‘issue’ has its own guaranteed rate of interest which is paid at the end of the term. The minimum investment amount for these Bonds is £25, with £3,000 being the maximum amount allowed per issue. Once the 5-year term is complete, bonds can be rolled over for another term, up until the child is 16 years of age. They can be cashed in early, but doing so attracts a penalty of 90 days’ interest. As with the Junior ISA, the money belongs to the child rather than the parent. Interest is calculated daily and added to the account each year, so that the child also benefits from compound interest.
Children’s Savings Accounts These types of account can be opened with as little as £1, with most bank and building societies offering at least one savings account for children. In most cases money can be withdrawn with no notice. Tax is paid at 20% on children’s savings accounts, but it is normally possible to reclaim the money using Form R40. Better still, use Form R85 to have the interest paid tax-free from the outset. These forms can be downloaded from the HM Revenue and Customs website, or you can pick up an R85 form at the bank or building society holding the account. A note of caution about tax If parents give their child money which subsequently earns interest of more than £100 in a tax year, the money will be taxed as though it belonged to the parent.
This rule isn’t applicable to Junior ISAs or Children’s Bonds, however.
deposits into the account. If any payments are missed you may suffer a reduction of interest.
Once a child reaches the age of seven they may be able to manage the account themselves, which is a great way for them to learn how to deal with their money.
Which savings account you choose for your child depends on your own circumstances. The Junior ISA has proven to be very popular, and the new legislation regarding transfer of monies from a Child Trust Fund to a Junior ISA opens up the product to more people.
There are two different types of children’s savings accounts, and you can open more than one: • Easy access: the interest rate will probably be lower with an easy or instant access account, but money can be withdrawn or deposited with no restrictions. These accounts are popular with children as many of them offer free gifts, including piggy banks and toys. • Regular savings: interest rates will be slightly higher for this type of account, but money is not accessible and you need to make regular monthly
If you asked a child which account they would prefer, it’s highly likely that they would choose whichever one offered a free gift. With this in mind, maybe the best solution is to open one account to keep them happy and another that provides a better rate of interest. https://www.gov.uk/juniorindividual-savings-accounts/openan-account http://www.nsandi.com/childrensbonds

Moyles Court School is within reach for hard working families A new affordable price structure and door to door service means many more families can consider an independent education. Moyles Court School near Ringwood in the New Forest is totally in touch with the families it is looking to attract. With an excellent reputation for education and learning tailored to the individual, Moyles Court has looked at other critical considerations – fees and accessibility to take account of busy parents juggling work commitments. Headmaster Mr Richard Milner-Smith said: “Independent education is sometimes thought of as exclusive, the preserve of the very rich only. Our aim is to overcome that prejudice and to convince many more parents that it is the right choice for their children.” At a time when most independent school parents will be contemplating another above-inflation annual rise in fees, most families at Moyles Court School will be paying an average of 15% LESS next school year than they are this year. Mr Milner-Smith added: “What Moyles Court has to offer is, in a sense, beyond price: an education, tailored to the individual needs of each child, in an idyllic setting. As well as our listed main building, we have enviable modern facilities including a new library, modern sports hall, outdoor multi-sports courts, extensive playing fields and art and ICT studios” “By reducing the financial cost very substantially we intend to show many families that they can in fact afford the undoubted benefits of an independent education for their children.” Moyles Court have Open Days on Saturday 9th May from 10am – 12.30 and Wednesday 3rd June from 9.30am – 11.30am. www.moylescourt.co.uk/join-us

PETS Why a Luxurious Bed is Important for your Elderly Dog A comfortable place to rest their head, extra support for arthritic bones and a little extra TLC - dogs need all of these things as they grow old. You can make their twilight years a happy time for both of you simply by being aware of the issues they face, and what you can do to help. An orthopaedic bed with a memory foam mattress will support their joints by moulding itself around them, helping with blood circulation and providing a comfortable place to rest. Problems such as hip dysplasia often show themselves in middle age, so even if you don’t consider your dog to be elderly, it may be worthwhile investing in this type of bed. What types of luxury beds are there? Self-heating Metallised insulation is placed below the lining, and radiates heat. Covered with a sheepskin or fleece outer layer, this would have therapeutic benefits particularly if your house is draughty. Elevated On the theme of draughty houses an elevated bed keeps your dog away from a cold floor, and is available in a range of sizes. Luxury materials One of the most important considerations is the material used to make the bed and mattress. You can buy alpaca fibre and soft fleece fillings, but it’s also important to think about practicality, so zip-off covers should be a priority to maintain hygiene. A luxurious place to sleep is important for dogs of all ages, but particularly so for those in their later years. By Ann Haldon

BEAUTY
Softly Does It By Kate Duggan
Summer is just around the corner; long-sleeves have been banished for another few seasons and we’re eyeing up new sandals, sunglasses and swimsuits. It’s all too easy to skimp on bodycare in the colder months, but now the sun is finally out it’s time to treat ourselves to some muchneeded TLC.
Good exfoliation is a must, particularly if you’re planning on self-tanning. Unfortunately, many of the scrubs on the high-street are too harsh, stripping the skin of its natural oils and leaving it feeling scratched and sore. Heyland and Whittle’s Exfoliating Soap Bag (£6) is a much better option. Filled with natural soaps that are packed with essential oils, it’ll make a noticeable difference to your skin and is the perfect alternative to shower gel. For a really indulgent treat, however, it’s hard to beat the Lime & Ginger Salt Glow by Elemis. At £36.50, it isn’t cheap, but it works wonders and smells divine. While bubbles are fun, if you want your bath product to leave your skin silky smooth, then oil is your best bet. Neom’s Tranquillity Bath and Shower Oil is heavenly. A bottle costs £40 from www.amara. com, but a few drops
16
go a long way. Along with skin nourishing ingredients, such as jojoba and Vitamin E, it has a high concentration of essential oils (12 in total), to help you destress, unwind and forget that row you had with your manager. Pour yourself a large glass of wine, lock the bathroom door, put some music on and… relax. If you moisturise all over every day, you can get away with a light body lotion. But, let’s face it, how many of us have time? If your daily beauty routine is more ‘bare essentials’ than ‘at home spa’ it’s worth investing in a heavy duty hydrator for the weekend. Aveda’s Beautifying Body Moisturiser (£22) is wonderfully rich, but absorbs well, with none of that greasy residue that some high street brands can leave you with. The smell is, quite simply,
amazing – you may well find that you attract a lot of compliments on your new perfume. Most of us are guilty of neglecting our poor feet, particularly when we can hide them away in boots all winter. But, come summer, the most beautiful pair of designer sandals won’t hide dry, cracked heels and chipped polish. A salon pedicure always feels like a real indulgence and can get your feet in tip-top condition for the warmer months. For minimal maintenance, opt for a long-lasting varnish, such as shellac, in a colour that co-ordinates with your favourite sandals. Aqua, coral, bronze or soft violet all look great with a tan. Keep the good work up at home with regular moisturising. We love Narynda’s Heel Balm (£9.50), which is completely natural and unbelievably nourishing. (It also works wonders on dry elbows.) www.narynda.com Cherry-red and ‘nude’ lips are both key trends for this summer. Whichever look you decide to embrace, you need a smooth surface to get the best result. Red lipstick, in particular, will highlight any areas of chapping or dryness. Mint Julips Lip Scrub by Lush (£5.50) gently buffs away dry patches and softens skin. Warning: sugar, lemon and peppermint make it rather tasty, so you may find yourself reaching for it quite a lot…

What is a Dental Implant? a dental implant is an artificial replacement for a tooth root, usually made from titanium. there are many different implant systems available and when competently used they all deliver a highly reliable form of treatment. the main aim during the placement of any implant is to achieve immediate close contact with the surrounding bone. over time further growth of bone onto the implant surface enhances the stability of the implant. Frequently AskeD questIons Will I be able to eat what I like afterwards? Once completed, patients should be able to eat a normal, healthy diet with little or no difficulty. What Costs are involved in implant treatment? The cost can vary, depending on the degree and extent of treatment required. The full cost is therefore explained and confirmed in a written treatment plan from your implant dentist.
How long will it take? Implant treatment usually requires a number of appointments over a period of months. In some cases, however, implant work can be completed in a much shorter period. How long will it last? Once treatment s completed a regular routine of dental hygiene and regular check-ups should ensure that implants last for many years. Am I too old for implant treatment? There is no upper age limit for patients to undergo implant treatment, provided they continue to enjoy reasonably good health. Is the treatment painful? Patients are often surprised at how little discomfort they experience during and after implant procedures.

HOBBIES
The Buzz of Helping Our Natural Environment by Jacob Thorson The buzzing of a honeybee is a familiar, timeless sound that we immediately associate with summer, and it’s fascinating to watch bees at work, gathering nectar that will eventually be turned into honey. As they as they bob in and out of the flowers in our fields and gardens, they pollinate 80% of the plant species in Europe, including most fruits and vegetables.
For the hive it is all about location, location, locations!
The sound of the honeybee may be timeless, but sadly 20 bee species are already extinct and time may be running out for some of the remaining 267 species in the UK. This is because changes in farming practices over the years have led to the disappearance of many wild flowers from their natural habitat.
hive. There are three main types of bee – bumblebees, honey bees and solitary bees, but it is the honey bee that beekeepers commonly look after in an ‘apiary’ (the name for a place where bees are kept). There are several different strains of honey bee, some of which are more docile – and therefore easier to manage – than others.
In the summer a group of charities came together to launch the Great British Bee Count. As part of this initiative the charities produced a mobile phone app and asked the public to record bee sightings. Participants were asked to identify the species of bee and record its habitat so the information could be analysed by the National Biodiversity Network.
If you are thinking of starting up as a beekeeper the first consideration should be the location of the hive. Do you have a garden or piece of land nearby where you can easily feed and maintain your bees? Can you place it in a location away from wind and in full or partial sun? Is the presence of the hive likely to disturb your neighbours? Even if the bees pose no direct harm to others, you should bear in mind that their presence may still cause anxiety to people living nearby.
It’s worrying in the extreme to think that these remarkable insects may one day disappear altogether from the landscape, and that perhaps explains why beekeeping has recently enjoyed something of a revival. While the UK has its share of commercial bee farms, most beekeepers are dedicated amateurs who maintain their hobby out of concern for the environment and a deep fascination with the life of the 24
Beekeeping is a form of livestock management and looking after an apiary can at times be demanding and heavy work. It’s advisable to consider taking a recognised course such as those offered by the British Beekeepers’ Association (http://www.bbka.org.uk). The Association has branches all over the country, offering
introductory sessions designed to tell you everything you need to know about setting up an apiary. In many areas where the course is run you will be given the opportunity to have direct contact with bees, so you can decide whether beekeeping is really for you before you invest in the bees and equipment you need. A hive is a miracle of organisation, where bees take on different roles to support their community. Worker bees forage for food, build the honey comb, feed the larvae, keep the nest clean and defend it from predators, while queen bees mate with drones, producing up to 1,000 eggs per day to form new colonies. The drone’s role is to mate with queens from different hives but unfortunately the drone dies after mating. It’s important to feel confident about handling bees before you
proceed to set up an apiary, as the initial costs can be quite high. Essential purchases are a hive (there are various types and designs of hive, including the ‘Heritage’ model for people who want to integrate their hives into a traditional garden layout) together with various components and accessories, including a veiled Bee Suit with special hygienic gloves - to protect both you and the bees - a hive tool to help you move the frames and a ‘smoker’ to calm the bees when they become disturbed. You’ll need to start out with a five or six frame nucleus (referred to as a ‘nuc’ by beekeepers) and gradually expand your colony as you become more experienced. You should always purchase bees from a reputable bee breeder: it’s better to buy queens that have been bred within the UK as imported queens may
carry diseases. Ask around for recommendations but if you can’t contact a local beekeeper then you can look up sellers in specialist magazines such as Bee-craft (a 12 month subscription costs £16 for online or £27 delivered). If you join your local beekeeping association you may be able to buy your bees locally from a fellow keeper. What you choose to do with the honey from your hive is, of course, up to you. One hive can produce up to 60lb (27kg) in a good season, however an average hive will offer a surplus of around 25lb (11kg). There are other products – such as beeswax and royal jelly – that can also be sold, which goes to show that beekeeping is not only a great hobby: it can be a great business, too!

TRUST THE EXPERIENCED, ESTABLISHED COMPANY
The Apprentice goes Full Circle Apprenticeships used to be called YTS – Youth Training Scheme – and Mike Fyall knows he gives his age away when he says he was a YTS student at FG Bakers, who were a local painting and decorating business on Bournemouth Road. Around a year after having completed his apprenticeship Mike decided that he could use his skills to run his own business. Fast forward 27 years and he’s still doing it, and what’s more he still lives and works in Chandlers Ford. In a fairly small town like Chandlers Ford, any business
will live and die by their reputation. By delivering top quality workmanship Mike built up a repeat client base. But more than that Mike tells us “although I only ever set out to do painting and decorating, I was regularly asked if I could do other work. People would ask for everything from replacing a door to completely refurbishing a kitchen or bathroom. I also took on commercial work for Peter Symonds College and Penyards Lettings. As I didn’t want to be a ‘Jack of all trades’ I built up a team of regular, skilled trades I could pull in to help. Because they are keen to get extra work

from me they always do the very best job they can.” Mike has recently taken on an apprentice of his own. “It gives me an extra pair of hands, but it’s also very rewarding to be able to pass on my skills to the next generation. I coach a kid’s football team too…yes, in Chandlers Ford! Looks like I’m here to stay”. 29

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes
Waiting to board the plane for our weekend in Nice, my breathing became shallow, my hands felt clammy and my heart began to race. But it wasn’t the terror of being entombed in a silver tube burning gallons of kerosene in an illogical attempt to defy gravity, rather it was my other flying phobia - a brat sat in the seat behind. After our furious dash across the tarmac elbowing nonpriority boarders out of the way (we’d paid three quid extra to be treated like VIPs you see), we stored our luggage and settled into our seats. As Sarah began debating which variety of microwaved toasty to scald her mouth with, I commenced my nervous fidgeting. I craned my neck, scanning for infants.
The smug thirty-something parents scanned the row numbers as they squeezed themselves inexorably nearer. Thirty one, thirty two, thirty.... three - there, perfect. And where do you think they ended up? You know it brother. The smiling cabin crew snapped the overheads shut and fussed everyone into their places as the Irish lilt of the pilot’s voice reassuringly purred our route over the PA system.
“They seem a perfectly nice family to me.”
I closed my eyes. Maybe the kid with E numbers smeared over his sticky intemperate mush would be perfectly behaved, maybe he would just nod off in his Mummy’s arms? What did it matter that he was directly behind my head? The flight was short, it didn’t… thump! Oh no, we hadn’t even taken off and it had started. Thump!
“It’s not Mum and Dad I’m
It isn’t the actual kick that

drives you insane, it’s the anticipation of the tiny toes tapping the back of your seat that’s so unbearable. “Tom, just ignore the little chap, we’ll be there before you know it, read your guide to Nice.” “I am trying to ignore it (thump), but it’s not easy when you have parents who can’t control their blasted kid (thump).” “Tom! Shush, they’ll hear you!” “Good!”(Thump). As the big tin bird eased herself into the stratosphere, the blonde terror behind succumbed to fatigue and fell into a fitful slumber. I closed my eyes and tried to join the little darling. Unfortunately, my attempt at a cat nap was shattered by the racket from the well-padded lady in the seat next to mine. Her vast paw swirled inside her plastic cashew tub, like Trevor Brooking choosing the FA Cup quarter finalists.
Finally content with her haul, she pulled yet another catch of nuts from her bucket. Her powerful elbow, nudging me with each swirl, was like a JCB digger excavating a drain. As she daintily tossed nuts into her pie hole with all the skill of a serial grazer, I leaned over to Sarah and whispered,
from deafening me, roused the little cherub sitting behind. And off we went again! Thump! “Right, that’s it, I’m going to say something!” “Tom! Please, we’re nearly there!”
“Shush Tom, she’ll hear you.”
“I’m sorry Sarah but this is ridiculous (thump). Excuse me, I’m sorry to bother you, but can you not control you child? I’m not bothered but my wife is getting very angry.”
“Good!” (Nudge).
“Tom!”
Then thankfully, she nodded off. A moment’s pause, then inevitably, the snoring began. Her huge proboscis making a noise like a gnu with sinus trouble - Zzzzzzphhh!
Sarah squeezed her head next to mine through the little gap between the head rests. With our faces squashed together, we must have looked quite alarming. She tried to smile, but the glare from the brat’s

Mother was enough to make her retreat. Sat back in her seat, Sarah’s weapon of choice (elbow) was immediately deployed to painful effect. “How dare you bring me into it.” (Dig) “Ow! I...wanted to present a united front?” (Thump, Zzzzz) “In future Tom, leave me out of your squabbles please.” “Whatever you say dear and by the way, this is going to bruise.” “Good! And so will this one, hopefully!” (Dig). Oh, the joys of being a jet setter.....

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Chandlers Ford & Eastleigh areas and Justin is finding that his
approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve
done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

LIFE LIST
There Ought To Be A Law Against It Many people learn to their cost that the law is an ass, even if they don’t know that the phrase appeared in Oliver Twist. You can be certain that if you’re meeting a solictor or a lawyer, someone’s in trouble - especially if you hear any of these gems:
with this advert
1. I know how the other guy thinks. And I think better than he does.
please call mike on
2. Read the small print? Oh, I don’t think that’s necessary.
www.genesisdomesticappliances.co.uk
3. That comes down to client confidentiality. Oh, I see - you’re the client.
07958 410101
4. There were unforeseen complications - it turns out their witness isn’t dead after all. 5. Given the right circumstances, anyone of us could become a lawyer. 6. Technically it could be construed as a crime, but there’s no need to get technical at this stage. 7. We’re going to mount a strong defence, so I want you to work on your crying.

8. Divorce is a very serious matter. Now, how about some pretzels? 9. This tie has never lost me a case. 10. Let me do the worrying for both of us. 11. Facts can be seen several different ways. 12. Sign here. And here. And here. Sorry, you’ve just signed for me. That makes you my lawyer. 13. You’ll have the finest legal team we can squander your money on. 14. I can’t represent you in a divorce. I’m sleeping with your wife. And your nanny. 15. We deal with cases like yours all the time. It’s meat and potatoes to us. 45

MOTORING
Top 5 Eco Cars By James Baggott @CarDealerEd
As the costs to run our beloved petrol- and diesel-powered cars increase, it’s no wonder we’re all on the hunt for an alternative solution. With electric and hybrid powertrains driving some of the industry’s most esteemed supercars – the new Honda NSX and BMW i8 – it would appear that there is another way forward. But if eco is at the forefront of your mind, which car should you have on your driveway? Here are our choices.
Ford Fiesta
The Fiesta is the best selling car on the market – and not without good reason. Although it’s not labelled an official ‘eco’ car, its low running costs make it the ideal cost-effective solution for most buyers. Choose the 1.4-litre TDCi, priced from £13,065, and you can expect an average mileage of 68mpg and emissions of 107g/km.
Fiat 500
The Fiat 500 completes the ‘Thee Musketeers’ line-up, alongside the Mini and VW Beetle, as one of today’s most stylish cars. Running a 1.2-litre engine, the 500 TwinAir can achieve 49.6 urban mpg and dodges road tax by emitting just 95g/km of CO2. The TwinAir is priced from £12,715 and is the perfect city run around.
BMW i3
BMW’s futuristic i3 is one of just a few cars that has revolutionised the way we view the future of motoring. Not only does it combine eco-friendly driving with premium qualities, it can also reach 93mph, can go from 0-60mph in 7.9 seconds and has a driving range of 106 miles, thanks to its onboard petrol motor, which works alongside a 127kW electric unit. Sadly, its £29,130 price means we don’t see many of them on the road.
Volkswagen E-Up!
The E-Up! is one of the most practical and reasonably-priced electric cars on the market, with five doors and an estimated driving range of 93 miles. It takes six hours to recharge and has a comfortable top speed of 81mph. The price isn’t so attractive at £19,525, but this electric motor is close to feeling more like the average supermini.
Renault Twizy
Renault’s Twizy is just as fun as it looks. It may be the slowest of the pack, with a top speed of just 56mph, but it’s guaranteed to provide you with the most entertainment. Priced at £7,795, its 15kW battery takes four hours to charge, it has a driving range of 62 miles and emits zero emissions. And just look at its styling! 58

Who Dreamt That One Up? Iain Betson Asks What’s In A Name? In the seventies, car names conjured up far flung places of style, with sun kissed beaches and rolling countryside. Ford were masters at this: Cortina, Capri, and Granada, although let’s brush over the Escort. Then they completely lost it with the likes of Ka and Mondeo and Probe. British Leyland had the lame offerings of Marina (it’s a car not a boat, but it should have sunk without trace all the same), Allegro (it was hardly quick), or Dolomite (more like Termite). But the Japanese have cornered the weird name market starting with The Bongo Friendee and the Suzuki Mightyboy. From Toyota: The Lucinda Joyful Canopy (it has two sunroofs
apparently) and from Mitsubishi the Cyborg-R. Europe, anxious not to be left out, entered VW with its Golf Club and Golf Driver. After that they decided to stay with a simple, descriptive name, so came up with Bora. Vauxhall/Opel had a go as well. There is an urban myth circulating that amongst Spanish speaking countries the Nova enjoyed poor sales as, translated, it means “No Go”. The Koreans unleashed a whole raft of silly, inappropriate or misunderstood monikers: Hyundai “Accent” - nothing wrong with that per se, except the script style typeface at a quick glance looks like “effluent”. From Kia: The Cee’d (don’t forget the apostrophe!) Hyundai again: The Pony - never a truer word said. But it won’t end there, because coming over the horizon are the Chinese. With a manufacturing industry geared to produce just about everything, mass car export is just a matter of time and with it some more silly names.

RECIPE
Herby Stuffed Baked Tomatoes
Serves 2-4
Large and juicy beefsteak tomatoes are the perfect shape and size for stuffing and make an economical midweek supper. Serve hot or cold with a crisp green salad drizzled with a tangy balsamic glaze.
Ingredients:
1. Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, Gas 5.
• 4 firm beefsteak tomatoes
2. Use a sharp knife to slice the tops off
• 3 tbsp Virgin olive oil • 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 75g fresh white breadcrumbs • 2 tbsp fresh chopped parsley • 1 tbsp fresh chopped mint • 2 tsp capers, drained and rinsed • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Ready in 1 hour Replace the breadcrumbs with cous cous if liked. Place 115g cous cous in a heatproof bowl and pour over boiling water to cover. Stir once then place a plate on top of the bowl and leave for 10 minutes or until the liquid has been absorbed. Fluff up the grains with a fork then stir into the fried onion mixture as above. Add some toasted pine nuts, chopped dried apricots, fresh chopped coriander a little harissa paste for a more exotic flavour.
TIP
66
the tomatoes and slice a thin sliver from the base of each tomato to prevent them wobbling in the dish.
3. Use a teaspoon to scoop out the seeds and flesh from each tomato. Finely chop and reserve the flesh but discard the seeds. Place the tomato shells in a shallow ovenproof dish.
4. Heat half the olive oil in a medium-sized frying pan. Add the chopped onion and fry over a medium-high heat for 5 minutes until beginning to soften. Add the garlic and fry for a further 4-5 minutes until tender and golden. Stir in the chopped tomato flesh, breadcrumbs, parsley, mint and capers and season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
5. Spoon the breadcrumb mixture into the tomato shells, pressing it down gently then top with the lids. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the tomatoes are just tender. Serve hot or cold.

The ‘Afterlife’ of Social Media From positing and tweeting, to linking and liking, social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter are no longer just the playground of the young. More and more people of all ages are messaging, networking and sharing moments of their lives with others, but what happens to all that personal content after a person is no longer with us? Comments made and photos shared on Facebook, ‘tweets’ put on Twitter and blogs or articles published on website are all referred to as ‘Digital Assets’. The term also includes videos put on YouTube, music on Soundcloud and even CV and professional details LinkedIn profiles. At the moment, there is no specific law in the UK to deal with digital assets upon death and so we have to rely on existing copyright UK law.
The difficulty is when there is a clash between a family wanting to enjoy old pictures and memories on Facebook (effectively keeping the person ‘alive online’) and the internet service provider (ISP) which owns the server on which digital assets are stored. All ISPs have privacy policies and term and conditions to protect an individual’s privacy and the confidentiality of their digital assets after their death. Assuming that digital assets are original works that have been created using independent effort (i.e. you took your own “selfie”), there is no doubt that the individual owns the copyright to them. This automatic right continues for seventy years after a person’s death. Then the rights pass to the deceased’s personal representatives, usually beneficiaries named in a Will. Whilst beneficiaries may have their benefactor’s logins and passwords, accessing an online account without specific authority
(and because the person is dead they cannot grant it) could be an offence under the Computer Misuse Act 1990. In addition, terms and conditions of the ISPs often prohibit account holders from recording and passing on the details of logins and passwords to reduce the risk of hacking. A few ISPs do allow users to nominate someone else to have access to their digital assets following your death, but only a few. Until the law and ISPs catch up, the best advice is to put some thought into planning ahead in a Will or make effort to decide what you want to leave online, deleting accounts and passing on information as appropriate before death. The default position of the ISPs is to delete a profile that has been inactive for a certain period of time and, if that is actioned, you and your family will lose the digital legacy you chose to leave for them.

Should I start my business from scratch or buy an existing one? Investing in a “going concern” brings the security of trading history, established customers, suppliers and staff who already have relationships with your customers. On the downside, you have to pay for it. While starting a business from scratch gives the owner a completely blank canvass, there are significant hidden start-up costs not to mention a high degree of risk. Found empty premises of the right size, location, rent and lease terms? Are the premises are approved for your intended use? All commercial premises are classified by your local authority’s Planning Department and
planning consent will be needed if you want to change the current permitted use. The application process will take at least 8 weeks and you will have to pay £385 just to find out if your proposed use will be permitted. As a rough guide, florist shops, hairdressers and sandwich bars are classified as A1. Restaurants, snack bars and cafés selling hot food for consumption on the premises are A3. Hot food takeaways such as Fish & Chip shops, pizza and burger bars are A5. Will your premises need new flooring, lighting and heating? Have you sourced and worked out the cost of all the essential equipment? There are strict
Health & Safety laws protecting staff and customers - non-slip floors, hand wash stations, disabled access and staff rest rooms, for example. Your business plan will identify how long it takes to hit the monthly sales and profit targets needed to cover your monthly rent, rates, insurance, utilities and staff wages. Don’t forget that on top of these fixed monthly costs there is also the question of risk. What guarantee is there that your customers will support your new business within your estimated time scale?

Exciting, mysterious, irresistible… rumours of the treasures of the East encouraged 16th century Western explorers to push back the boundaries of the known world, but it was not until the late 17th century that the English East India Company secured its trading post in Taiwan and began to trade regularly with China. Tea was the first import of significance, and raw silk, too; while buying and displaying costly furnishings from afar – especially lacquer and porcelain, neither of which English manufacturers knew how to produce at the time – became a way for the higher echelons of society to show off their wealth and importance. The ‘Chinese room’ was a feature of many a
Willow Pattern china As imported Chinese porcelain increased in popularity, the potteries of Staffordshire were desperate to compete. At first, they emulated the style with hand-painted ware, but in the late 18th century, they finally devised a means of copying Chinese hand-painting efficiently and cheaply. The new process was called underglaze transfer printing, and was probably first used to print Chinese landscape patterns onto porcelain by a maker called Caughley. He was soon followed by Minton, and the process was perfected, in 1784, by Josiah Spode I. Spode made Willow Pattern, and other Chinese designs, the trademark of his company. It is thought that Willow Pattern was developed from a Chinese pattern called Mandarin – the romantic legend that it was based on the story of two lovers chased by a rich mandarin across a bridge and then transformed into doves probably being a publicity stunt that was developed decades later. Early Willow Pattern plates were hexagonal, printed with dark blues on a ‘pearlware’ body; as time went on the blue became paler and the plates circular. By 1830, the pattern was so popular that there were about 200 producers of it in England, including all the great names of British pottery. Willow was not always in blue – other colours, such as red, purple, black and green, have featured, sometimes gilding has been added and, especially in the 1920s and 30s, multi-coloured Willow Pattern, known as Gaudy Willow, had its share of popularity. The design did not remain static, either. In the 20th century the borders were often changed or eliminated, and the central pattern simplified. Whatever the difference in its details, and whoever it was made by, however, Willow Pattern has been eternally popular – even, perhaps, the most commonly used pattern in history. stately home, from Chatsworth to the Prince Regent’s Royal Pavilion in Brighton, the latter an extraordinary Oriental-style palace, crammed with objects and furniture from China. As time went on, not only did Chinese factories begin to fuse European and native styles to suit their buyers’ tastes, but also English designers and craftspeople began to imitate Oriental designs. Thomas Chippendale was one well-known example, employing latticework and lacquer in his influential furniture pattern books. And then came another enormous shift in style when, in 1854, Japan resumed trade with the West after a break of more than two centuries. Europe was flooded with imports: everything from bronzes and silks to kimonos, lacquers, fans and woodblock prints (the latter a
huge influence on Impressionist painting and the Art Nouveau movement). Christopher Dresser was the first European designer to visit Japan after 1854, and both his book on the country’s art, design and architecture and his own designs for textiles, wall coverings, ceramics, glassware and metalware helped perpetuate the fashion for Japonisme at the end of the 19th century. The fashion for Eastern objects and designs had taken firm hold, and eventually percolated down from the piles of the aristocracy to reach ordinary people’s homes. Take the almost ubiquitous Willow Pattern, for example (see box), which has been found in households up and down the country since the early 19th century. And who these days does not own a piece of blue and white porcelain, a ginger jar, a Chinese rug, a ‘coolie’ style

lampshade or a rattan side table, for example? Oriental-inspired fabrics, wallpapers, furniture and accessories can be used to make a statement in any room, or can blend gently into an eclectic interior, while the colours – rich, warm red, gorgeous blues, yellows and greens, touches of black and highlight of gold – are highly appealing and can be employed as subtle touches or all-over schemes. Whether it be a precious, hand-made antique, an item specially mass-produced for the European market or a Western item that has been influenced by Oriental designs, we love to incorporate beautiful pieces that demonstrate the craftsmanship, the materials and the styles that have become symbolic of Eastern cultures… just like the aristocrats of the 17th and 18th centuries. Fashions may come and go, but Oriental style has become a timeless staple.

LOCAL THEATRE
Theatrical Masterpiece With a delightful tangle of deceit and misunderstanding, a quartet of crafted characters and an agile plot, Relatively Speaking is the theatrical masterpiece that established Alan Ayckbourn’s name as synonymous with theatre. After first opening at the Duke of York’s Theatre in 1967, Relatively Speaking was Ayckbourn’s first West End success and he was hailed as the new comic talent to arrive. Revived at The Wyndham Theatre in 2013, Felicity Kendall played the befuddled Sheila. This classic British comedy is being presented to local audiences by The Chameleons of Chandler’s Ford from 23rd to 25th of July. In the capable hands of award-winning Director Lorraine Biddlecombe, and supported by an enthusiastic and experienced cast led by Marilyn Dunbar, past Regional Prize Winner of The All England Drama Festival who appears as Sheila.
What’s Relatively Speaking About? After just one month, Greg is convinced that Ginny is the one for him. When she announces that she is going to visit her parents, it’s seems the perfect opportunity to ask Ginny’s father for her hand in marriage. All the more so when he finds a handwritten address beside her bed. With good intention and little clue as to what awaits him, he discreetly follows her to Buckinghamshire. When Greg arrives at the suburban family home, Phillip and Sheila are found enjoying their Sunday breakfast and papers on the patio. What Greg does not realize, however, is that the older couple are not Ginny’s parents. The scene quickly spirals into a chaos of misunderstanding, deception and comic confusion. www.chameleontheatre.co.uk. 76

Summer Solstice Summer Solstice (sometimes also referred to as Midsummer) falls between June 21st-22nd, and celebrates the longest day and shortest night of the year, the sun reaching its highest point in the northern hemisphere, and the very pinnacle of summer-time. Midsummer is celebrated with a variety of different traditions and celebrations around the world – and indeed around our own country, with parties commonly held from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland to the Cornish coast, and in particular at Stonehenge, where tens of thousands gather every year for an all-day festival, watching the sun rise early on 21st June and celebrating the longest day with everything from quiet observations to full-on festivities. The lighting of bonfires often forms a big part of the culture, celebrating the burning light of the sun and mirroring it, a tradition stemming from pagan and Celtic roots. In addition to having huge Pagan significance, the solstice is relevant too to some branches of Buddhism and those who practice Yoga, in which Sun Salutations often play an important role and the sun is something very much worthy of reverence. The solstice can be explained by the angle of the earth’s axis, the tilt of which is the reason we experience our four seasons each year. When the axis tilts towards the sun during the summer months we know here in the UK, winter is of course in the southern hemisphere, rotating entirely by the time we reach the opposite end of the year. 82

Going Potty for Summer Plants Summer bedding plants are everywhere at this time of year and as soon as conditions are reliable enough, you can plant them out in your garden to create a wonderful, colourful display to last the whole summer long.
by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com
Summer bedding plants are everywhere at this time of year and as soon as conditions are reliable enough, you can plant them out in your garden to create a wonderful, colourful display to last the whole summer long. I am a great fan of hanging baskets, window boxes and patio containers, but this year why not ring the changes and also include some unusual containers and planters to bring a different look or even a bit of humour to your garden? You can use almost anything as a planter, so keep an open mind before you chuck anything in the bin or skip. I have seen some really crazy plantings in disused hand basins, loo cisterns or even the lavatory itself! Provided there is adequate drainage in the base of the container, it should work well. If you are using something like a hand basin which only has one plug hole in the bottom, make sure that you cover it with pieces of broken crock and then perhaps put an inch or two of course gravel in the bottom of the container before you put the compost in as this should help to make sure that the drainage hole does not become blocked. But if you don’t like the idea of bringing your loo or bathroom out into the garden, there are plenty of other normal household
objects which can be used as useful planters without necessarily making your neighbours think you have gone completely crazy. How about that old watering can that’s sprung a leak or has a loose handle? Whether you have a traditional galvanised can or a more modern plastic one, you can have great fun planting it up with bedding, particularly if you choose something like trailing blue lobelia to come spurting out of the top and perhaps even the end. Buckets too can look really good fun and if you have one which still has its handle firmly attached, then you could use it as a hanging basket. Plastic buckets can have holes drilled or melted in the base and similarly you can use a sturdy nail to make holes in the base of a metal bucket. Old footwear with a bit of character can be turned into planting with real flair. If you use old gardening boots or a pair of shoes, you are unlikely to need to add extra drainage as they invariably drain well. But if you are going to recycle a pair of wellies, then you may need to add a bit of extra drainage unless they have quite a lot of damage on their soles. Again cascading plants can look particularly dramatic, but a bunch of bright red geraniums or the spiky hedgehog-like foliage of a bright green or variegated grass ...Continued on page 90

can look particularly handsome appearing out of some discarded footwear. What about a beaten up old handbag? If you choose one with several compartments, you can even have sectional planting and if you have one with a handle, it too can be suspended from a pergola or wall and used rather like a hanging basket. See if there’s anything in your kitchen cupboards that could be recycled and put to better use in the garden. An old saucepan, casserole pot or even a mixing bowl or jug can make an attractive planter, but again you will have to make sure that there
is sufficient drainage. If the container is large and there are no drainage holes in it, then the other option is to plant it up as a mini bog garden and use moisture-loving plants in it such as hostas or pond-side irises. Colanders or sieves also make interesting and unusual hanging baskets and have the advantage of holes that are generally so small that you need not even use a liner. You can simply concentrate on planting one or two upright specimens in the centre of the colander and then using plenty of trailing plants around the edge and allowing them to cascade down. Provided you have time to keep them well watered, you could even create your own living tea set with an old sizeable teapot and some large mugs full of favourite summer bedding. Larger items such as old
wheelbarrows or chimney pots may not be the sort of thing you have lying around your own garden, but you can often pick these up very cheaply from a local salvage or junk yard or perhaps even from a friend’s garden. Something like a wheelbarrow gives a huge planting area and because it holds such a large volume of compost, it will also mean that you need not be quite so concerned about watering, as it will be less inclined to dry out. All these containers can be treated in just the same way as a container that you have bought from the garden centre. As I mentioned drainage is of great importance, but when it comes to choosing a compost and the plants themselves, you need nothing any different from when you are planting up a more traditional container and believe me you can have a lot more fun!

LOCAL NEWS
Healthwalks Scheme Regular walking can help prevent heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, osteoporosis and diabetes. Eastleigh Borough’s Healthwalks Scheme is a great way to exercise and social at the same time. The walks take about an hour and everyone is welcome. Each walk is led by a qualified Volunteer Walk Leader and take place rain or shine! Most offer two routes, one covering 3 miles in the hour and the other at a more sedate pace covering 2 miles in the hour, the latter aimed at new walkers and those recovering from illness. There is also a Rehabilitation Walk which is a gentle walk aimed at those who are unable to walk for more than 20-30 mins and/or recovering from an operation or illness. With 10 walks taking part in 5 days and over 230 people taking part every week, the walks are becoming more and more popular, so more leaders are sought. If you can spare some time and enjoy walking then call the Healthwalks office. It does not have to be a commitment every week, just whenever you can is helpful! For more information call 02380 684813 (Healthwalks Office) or 02380 684800 (Fleming Park Leisure Centre) and speak to Marianne Cairley (Healthwalks Co-ordinator).
