Quick, Quick, Slow I spend my life trying to find ways to get things done more efficiently, in an effort to save time. Technology has been a fantastic facilitator of this goal and things that took forever 10 years ago can now be done in a flash. So why don’t I actually feel I have more time at all? My husband said it’s because whenever I offload/outsource/automate something in our lives, I then take on another project which is bigger than the time I have just freed! I guess also, whereas years ago I might have said ‘that’ll do’, now I set myself higher standards. A case in point: yes I have an automatic washing machine which is wonderful. So now I iron my teatowels (at which the whole family shakes their heads in disbelief). The whole ‘rush rush’ spills over into other aspects of life and my children’s generation doesn’t expect to wait for anything. My daughter – already notoriously impatient – orders online at 8pm in the evening then expects her goods to arrive by 9am the next day. And sometimes they do! As for having a gap in the day to do nothing… perish the thought. We are either speaking, surfing, texting, watching or doing. Except on holiday when somehow sitting by a pool, doing nothing other than watching the world go by is the activity of choice. The days slow down, our batteries are recharged, and all is well with the world. I don’t have an answer to this dilemma by the way, I’m just acknowledging that it’s the way of the world and I’ll bet most of you can empathise. But as my next birthday looms and I realise I started this magazine nearly 10 years ago, it does remind me that aiming for a few unrushed days is a good thing. In the summer months particularly, fetes, fairs, carnivals, open days, gardens and the like (see our what’s on listings on page 82) are good use of my life and certainly a lot more memorable than another day in front of a PC.

Celebrity Styles You Can Steal The ‘girls’ ready to work for you at Hair at Monroe’s.

The summer is fast approaching, the weather is hotting up and the sun is shining. We are all digging out our summer wardrobe in anticipation of BBQs with friends and days out with the family. After a winter of being wrapped up it’s time to consider the latest fashion and to plan how we can get that look. So let’s start at the top – literally.

Our hair plays an important part in our image and we are forever being bombarded by beautifully coifed celebrities and models who seemed to have amazing hair, smooth, shiny and long, with seemingly very little effort. Have you ever wondered how they get those luscious looks? No, it’s not just shampoo! Here are a few secrets that we use at Monroe’s.

Smooth and silky – for weeks One of the biggest changes the industry has seen over the last couple of years, is the use of treatments to achieve a smooth shine that will last six to eight weeks. Nearly every celebrity sporting high shine and glossy hair will have had some kind of Keratin treatment applied. Becky, one of our Keratin specialists says, “Many of our customers want their hair to be smooth and easy to manage and one of the best ways to achieve this is to have a Keratin treatment. Keratin is a protein that's found naturally in our hair and the treatment works by penetrating the hair strands with

6

extra keratin to recondition each hair. It's not a chemical that breaks the structure of the hair rather it replenishes the hair and makes it silkier and straighter. Once applied the Keratin opens up the hair cuticles, allowing the treatment to be absorbed and then, by finishing with a glamorous blow dry to seal the treatment into the hair, all the frizz is gone. This is a smoothing treatment, not a straightening treatment, so is great for defining curls and giving a gloss finish to straight hair.”

From short hair to long – in an afternoon. Growing your hair is not only a long wait, but usually you have that painful in-between phase, when it’s neither short enough nor long enough to be a real style. But you don’t need to wait, hair extensions is the answer. Our Manager Rose says, “Hair extensions have been popular for a long time now because the result is immediate. The quality of the hair has improved immensely since the early days and the range of colours has also

grown, so clients can achieve a really natural look that is easy to manage. As long as you apply gentle pressure when you wash your hair and use a looped hairbrush, the result should last for three to four months. But if you just want longer hair to try out, for variety or for a special occasion, another alternative is Flip-in hair. No glue, no weave and it can take just a few minutes to put in and a few minutes to take out allowing a real versatility to your hair styling.

Before

Hair Extensions

Hair at Monroe’s specialises in giving its clients a fresh modern look and we want to encourage existing and new clients to try a new look! So to celebrate the sun finally arriving, let us give you a look you’ll love.

Or how about changing your look completely? Suzanne, one of our senior stylists says, “We get a lot of new clients that come to us and have had the same style for a long time. But your face and skin tone changes over time and it’s

possible that your style no longer complements your face shape and natural colouring. Don’t forget too that fashions change – few people still sport a Princess Diana flick these days. When changing the style, the Monroe’s team will consider your lifestyle to ensure that the look that is achieved in the salon can be achieved at home. A new cut or colour can totally change the way someone looks and is probably the most rewarding part of being a stylist.”

SHORT STORY

Fashionable at Fifty by Jackie Brewster “Girls. Who can tell me the difference between leggings, jeggings and treggings?” Felicity smiled, hiding her disappointment that only two people, Edna Flewit and Doris Cartwright, had turned up for her ‘Fashionable at Fifty’ workshop at Buckledon Village Hall. Neither of them were a day under seventy five. Only Ted, who was there to lock up, raised his hand and replied, “I couldn’t say to be honest, but my wife makes me wear them sometimes”. Ted had been loitering at the back, listening and jangling his keys, until he finally pulled up a chair. It aggrieved Felicity that he was getting a free workshop but at least he interacted. Unlike Edna, whose chin had sunk into her bosom. Either she was snoring or had a chainsaw in her handbag. Handyman Ted, was a regular fixture in the village, yet his interest in fashion came as a surprise. When Felicity commented that pop socks were a wardrobe essential, Ted had nodded sagely, announcing he preferred ten denier. Glancing discreetly at his ankles, Felicity saw no sign of hosiery only thick woollen socks that would benefit from either a darning needle or the dustbin. She moved swiftly on 10

to ‘Capsule Wardrobes for a Weekend Away’. Doris became suddenly animated about a night she’d spent at a hotel by the motorway services, after Mr Cartwright had hammered through a hot water pipe. Felicity worried they were heading off the subject. She decided to wrestle back control of the room with ‘Ten Ways to Wear a Pashmina’. “Who’d like to volunteer?” she asked, and was about to whisk out her expensive pashmina when she saw Doris wipe her fingers down her slacks. Luckily she had a good polyester substitute, with none of the drape but washable at 40 degrees. No hands went up but Ted stood up and walked to the front. Ted allowed Felicity to demonstrate a style of wrap she was rather proud of – the Parisian Twist. It was her own invention. “I wouldn’t tie it like this”, Ted said when she finished. “Really?” She was slightly offended. “How would you do it?” “I like to tie a scarf with more swish to it”, he said, untangling himself. “Do demonstrate”. She stood back, trying not to smile. Who would have guessed that Ted was such an expert on ladies wear? He seemed very open about it – leggings, pop socks, and now pashminas, what else did he have in his repertoire? Whatever people get up to in the comfort of their own home

is entirely their own business, Felicity reminded herself liberally. Yet, she couldn’t wait to tell her mother. Ted meanwhile had re-tied the scarf leaving one long swathe which swung like a pendulum, and woke poor Edna up with a start. “That’ll scare the birds”, he grinned. “I beg your pardon?” Felicity objected to her girls being called ‘birds’. “The pigeons”, Ted said, “this is how I tie my scarecrow’s scarf”. “Scarecrow?” Felicity was confused. “You don’t wear them yourself?” “Why would I wear a lady’s scarf?” from the man who was clearly wearing a lady’s scarf. “What about leggings?” “My long johns?” He patted his thighs, “the missus insists on them when I’m at the allotment”. “Pop socks?” Felicity raised her eyebrow. “To support my prize-winning cucumbers”, he said, “what on earth did you think I do with them?” Felicity decided it was best not to say. “Thank you Ted”, she smiled, “it’s been enlightening”.

The 180 Year Old Owl! During a 2012 storm a 180 year old tree fell down in Hocombe Mead. The trunk was left in a clearing until recently, when Eastleigh BC used funds believed to be dedicated to the maintenance of Hocombe Mead by past property developers to have the tree carved by Paul Sivell (www. thecarvedtree.co.uk). A volunteer from Friends of Hocombe Mead contacted local schools to involve their pupils in the design but sadly not one replied. However, it’s a

lovely spot now with a seat carved out of the trunk to rest on while walking through Hocombe Mead and by participants of regular events organised by The Friends. As you can see from the picture above, in a nearby tree trunk Paul has also carved this gorgeous little owl. What a clever man! The next event is Sunday 22 June for an arts and craft event for children (from 2 ½ years upwards!). Visit www.hocombe-mead.org for time and event update in case of rain.

LOCAL

Musical Chairs in Chandlers Ford We’ve lived in Chandlers Ford for the last 15 years. I know this makes us relative newcomers but during this time, we’ve seen the odd shop changing hands or sadly left vacant for too long, a few houses been knocked down, a lot of flats being built but overall, nothing out of the ordinary for a fairly sedate community. But suddenly it seems that the world has realised that there is a thriving community here wanting to shop locally; we don’t all want to travel to Eastleigh or Southampton to do our shopping, and the place has come to life. One of the triggers for this is undoubtedly the arrival of Costa Coffee at the Fryern Arcade. This seems to have created a bit of ‘musical chairs’ in that area. Firstly, Costa Chandlers Ford opens on 3rd May – already open in fact by the time you receive your magazine unless the distributor for your area has been exceptionally quick off the mark. They are moving into the two units formerly occupied by D&G Hardware and Mibi. D&G are now on the opposite side and have taken a double unit allowing them to offer a wider range and it’s more spacious and light. Mibi have relocated next to Rawlings, in the shop formerly 16

occupied by the Southern Jewellers. The Post Office is also ‘changing sides’ in the units which used to house the dry cleaners and the book shop. It will also double as a small outlet for WH Smith branded goods. So that leaves the Post Office’s current unit empty. A little birdy tells us that it may well be taken by a butchers, which would be great news as in our house we were very disappointed when Dukes closed last year. On the subject of Dukes, that unit near the library has been empty for a while, too. We’re told that Leightons Opticians will soon be occupying that spot, although there is no news on what will happen with their current premises on the Winchester Road. Still in The Mall, there’s a change at Hair at Monroe’s. It’s the same salon and team working there, but a new owner has taken over, Caroline McCulloch (see page xx). And finally along the Hiltingbury Rd in what used to be a car showroom, a new shop has opened for the Countess Mountbatten Hospice Charity. My own mother was at the hospice herself (in West End) in the last few months of her life a couple

of years ago, and I can’t tell you what an incredible service the hospice and their staff offer, both for the patients and their family. So, well worth supporting and I know they are looking for stock and for volunteers.

Costa Coffee Now Open! Manager Sebastian (pictured) comes to Chandlers Ford from Costa’s Lyndhurst branch but lives just 5 minutes away. His aim is to plant his store at the centre of the local community and not just by selling great coffee. There will also be a Community Notice board along with copies of the local Discover Chandlers Ford Magazine. And they are always looking for other ways to support the local community to, for example by hosting church groups. Around eight people from the local area have been recruited to become Costa Baristas. The great position in the Fryern Arcade allows Costa to provide some outside seating as well as a great environment to enjoy one of their handcrafted drinks. The store is number 31 of Southampton based Franchise Premier Coffee who also operate stores in Eastleigh, Romsey and Southampton.

Friends of HEXAGON need a new Secretary

The right direction for a great education!

The HEXAGON Centre (in Suffolk Close, Chandler’s Ford) offers day services to adults with various disabilities and the Friends of HEXAGON help to fundraise for the centre. Past projects have included the purchase of IT equipment and currently we are providing financial assistance with the building of a Sensory Garden. Our work is extremely worthwhile and much appreciated by those who rely on the centre for companionship and activities in a caring environment. Following a retirement, the Committee is looking for a new Secretary. The work might well suit people recently retired and not yet fully committed to new activities, or to someone in part-time work. If you would like to know more about these opportunities, do please contact Derric Webster on 02380261949.

GARDENING

Plotting a Vegetable Garden By Pippa Greenwood So you have a small garden – maybe no more than a paved back yard or a balcony. That means you can’t really grow much for kitchen, right? Wrong! Start now and you can feast on delicious home-grown salads all summer long.

Super-tasty and home-grown!

The truth is that producing useful quantities of your own vegetables doesn’t take up as much space as you might imagine. There’s a lot you can plant out or grow from seed right now that will give you some super-tasty, succulent, and top-quality salads in just a few weeks’ time. And the good news is that salad leaves grown in ornamental pots can be as decorative as they are nutritious. Before you get sowing or planting, choose the right containers. Big ones are easier to maintain than small ones; and of course bigger pots mean more produce. Go for something of at least 30cm (12in) in diameter, larger if possible, and whether seriously stylish or lowbudget – even an old bucket with plenty of drainage holes – they’ll do fine. Compost is important too, but as salad crops tend to be pretty short-term there’s no need to spend a fortune. Ideally choose a good-quality multi-purpose compost, but you can get perfectly acceptable results with the contents of a growing-bag, and save yourself a lot of money in the process. I find the quality of the

28

compost in these isn’t all that brilliant, but for the time you need it – and provided you keep it well-fertilised – it’ll be quite adequate. Salad leaves are all the rage and if you grow your own you can get precisely the mix you like best. They can be as ornamental as your planters, too. There are plenty of eye-catching lettuces such as the frilly Lollo, either a gorgeous bright-green standard Lollo a burgundy-tinged Lollo Rosso or a mixture of both. A look at the seed packets in the garden centre will reveal oak-leaved types, frillies, and all sorts of seriously pretty lettuces in every shade of green and red imaginable. If you treat them as cut-and-come-again crops, snipping off the leaves as you want them but not cutting into to the base, they’ll put out new shoots and keep cropping for longer. Baby beet leaves are a popular salad ingredient, too. Choose a variety like Bull’s Blood for the prettiest leaves or grow any of the standard varieties, and you’ll also get a great-tasting root crop later on. I generally harvest the young leaves a few at a time but let the plant produce a root too. There are still plenty of tomato

plants in the shops now, but you want to hunt carefully to find the ones that are still in top condition. If you choose an outdoor variety (the label will state this clearly) it can be grown in a pot on its own, and if you have a big enough container you can grow some other salad ingredients around the edge of the container too – perhaps a rim of salad leaves, compact lettuce, or even a few herbs? If you’re after some fire in your cooking, a chilli pepper thrives in a pot in a warm and very sheltered spot. Sweet peppers also do well in pots, but again you need as warm and sheltered a spot as possible. Fresh herbs will not only transform your cooking but can make a salad something very special too. Choose your favourites and either grow them

in a dedicated herb pot with extra grit in the compost for good drainage, or even consider popping a few in with your main crops. Vegetables, like most plants, do best in a relatively warm spot with plenty of sun, so site your containers carefully. You want them to be easily accessible from the kitchen, but it’s more important to ensure they’re sheltered from the wind but still get enough sun – although sunshine is less critical to salad crops than it is to fruit. You can make your salad pot using crops raised from seed and sown directly into the compost – root crops such as carrots don’t much like being transplanted, and so are perfect for direct sowing. If you’re growing beetroot for its sweet juicy root, it too tends to perform better

if direct-sown. Just make sure that the compost is kept moist at all times but not actually wet: as long as the container has plenty of drainage holes in it you shouldn’t have any problems with over-watering, even if there’s a downpour or two. You may prefer to raise some of your crops in pots and grow them on a bit before planting them out. The advantage of this is that the containers out in the garden will always be full and looking their best, even while you’re harvesting them. The new plantings will very quickly blend in with the old, and all summer long you’ll have a garden that’s as pleasing to the eye as it is to the tastebuds. Hambrooks Winning Design for Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2014 Winning Design ‘Halo’

The Royal Horticulture Society (RHS) and the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) have selected Hambrooks to build a garden for the annual RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in July for their ‘Your Garden Your Budget’ project.

Hambrooks Garden Designer Stuart Towner

32

Landscapers across the UK are invited to submit designs and this is the third year that the RHS and APL have jointly sponsored this project. It features four categories of gardens as part of a scheme to bring to the general public’s attention what can be achieved within particular budgets. Hambrooks Garden Designer Stuart Towner, created the winning design called ‘Halo’, which was selected for the £13,000 budget category. The Mediterranean themed garden with arid planting, traditional crazy paving and paths is based on the imagery of a classic Greek island with a contemporary interpretation of the Greek Orthodox Church. A small courtyard garden that is almost theatrical in style, it is primarily for entertaining. Stuart Towner who is a student member of the revered Society of Garden Designers, is currently studying part-time for a BA in Garden Design at Greenwich University. His idea materialised from a concept that takes in the

natural harmony of the Greek landscape and creates a modern interpretation of the classic Greek style that has been around for thousands of years. Managing Director Norman Hambrook said, “This idea of presenting gardens that are within a certain budget to visitors at the prestigious Hampton Palace Court Flower Show, is an excellent way of demonstrating the fact you don’t have to spend a fortune on gardens to have something really quite spectacular – you just need great garden design!”

The RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2014 is being held from the 8th - 13th July.

FINANCE

Buying a New Car The average householder doesn’t usually have enough spare cash to enable them to walk into a car showroom and make an outright purchase. Yet as current figures are showing healthy growth in the new car sales market, it’s clear that the money is being raised one way or another. In fact over the last 12 months the number of vehicles obtained using a finance arrangement has risen by 27%, whereas the number bought outright was below 15%. Information from the Finance & Leasing Association puts this trend down to the post-recession realisation that we have to stick within our budgets and manage our cash flow. As the majority of finance deals come with fixed interest rates, new car owners know exactly what their monthly/weekly repayment costs will be for the lifetime of the arrangement. But there are many finance options available and many terms to understand and this can be pretty confusing for a prospective buyer.

Not just monthly payments There is much to consider when looking into a finance plan, and a low monthly repayment alone 38

By Alison Runham, ww.alison.runham.co.uk

is not enough information on which to base your decision. For example, many finance agreements have a mileage limitation, with penalties for going over this. Some manufacturers will charge more than others but the average pricing is between 5p and 20p for every mile you exceed. You would probably be surprised at just how many miles you do so it’s important to be realistic – you don’t want to find yourself in the position of avoiding using your vehicle for the last few months of your agreement, just to avoid the penalty.

Contracts Bank loan: You can seek a loan agreement from your bank for the purchase of a vehicle, which will give you the sum outright. If you are successful then the car will be your own and it will be the bank you owe the money to. Your success in securing personal finance will depend on your credit rating, employment status and ability to prove you can repay the money. As with all loan agreements it is important to look for any small print, and to check you aren’t signing up for payment protection insurance (PPI) unless you want it.

Hire Purchase (HP): You will usually have to put down a deposit and then you will the balance in instalments over 12 – 60 months. Because you are repaying the full value of the car, the monthly payments can be high, especially if your deposit was small. Although this sounds similar to a bank loan, the dealer will usually organise hire purchase for you which can make it less hassle. Be warned though that you will not own the car until the final payment, so the vehicle can be repossessed if you don’t keep up with the repayments. On the other hand, as this gives the finance company some security, it can be easier to get a hire purchase agreement than it is to get a bank loan. Personal Contract Purchase (PCP): This is a variation of hire purchase but rather than paying for the car in full, you agree to pay the difference between the sale price and the estimated value at the end of the agreement period. This will usually mean the monthly payments are lower. At the end of the agreement you have three choices: just hand the car back; trade-in using the residual value as a deposit on a new model

or pay the final value in full (a ‘balloon’ payment) and keep the vehicle. You could of course look at taking out a bank loan to meet the balloon payment. Personal Leasing: Essentially you are just hiring the car for the duration of the agreement. The servicing and maintenance will be included (but not insurance). You will agree a limited mileage. At the end of the agreement, you hand the car back - it never belongs to you. Be aware though that as with any hire car, if you send the vehicle back with a scratch, a dent, or damaged upholstery, there are likely to be penalties to pay.

Credit rating Your credit rating will always be checked for any loan, hire purchase or finance

arrangement and those with poor credit may either be refused finance or will find themselves paying a higher interest rate. For example, on a car finance agreement with no deposit and a duration of 60 months with a car value of £5,000, someone with an

Excellent Credit Rating will pay £5748.75; change the buyer to one with a Poor Credit Rating and they could pay up to £9248.75 for the same vehicle.

Who to use When looking into where to

obtain a finance agreement, using a company with a car showroom and brand name will give you more protection than a private person or an internet agency. In the former case the contract will be two sided whereas less scrupulous companies can apply fees, charges and new rules and regulations throughout the agreement and, as this will have been a private transaction, it is unlikely you will be able to do much about it. A new car is likely to be the second highest value purchase you ever make after your home, so take your time to ensure that you are getting value for money, both in the car itself and in the repayment method.

Although it was the first novel she completed, it was not published until after her death in 1817. 2. Cooling, Kent The North Kent Marshes near Cooling on Kent’s Hoo Peninsula inspired the gloomy opening chapters of Dickens’ Great Expectations, wherein the protagonist Pip first meets the dangerous escaped convict Abel Magwitch. 3. Great Yarmouth, Norfolk Dickens visited Great Yarmouth in the late 1840s and later used it as the hometown of the Peggotty family in David Copperfield. In the novel, Clara Peggotty states that ‘it was well known ... that Yarmouth was, upon the whole, the finest place in the universe’. Yarmouth is also the starting point of Robinson Crusoe’s voyage in Daniel Defoe’s novel of 1719. 4. Isle of Skye, Inner Hebrides Published in 1927, Virginia Woolf’s fifth novel To The Lighthouse is set over two separate days, ten years apart, in the summer home of the Ramsay family on the Isle of Skye. The book is today considered one of her best and most challenging works. 5. Ottershaw, Surrey It is from an observatory at Ottershaw in Surrey that the narrator of HG Wells’ War Of The Worlds spots a ‘jetting out of gas from the distant planet’, the first of numerous Martian spacecraft setting off on their way towards Earth. © Taken from The British Isles: A Trivia Gazetteer by Paul Anthony Jones, out now.

Your Legal Options For Divorce Q: I am about to start divorce

proceedings, and since I have business interests abroad, I have been told that they won’t count in the division of martial assets. Is this true? Anon, Southampton

a good idea. The most recent high profile case to hit the headlines last year was that of David Thursfield, a multi-millionaire boss of motor company Ford who received the unprecedented sentence of two years in prison for failing to disclose alleged hidden wealth during his divorce from second wife, Linda. With a 1.2 million a year salary, a number of luxury properties around the world and a jetset lifestyle, Mr Thursfield was awarded a £1.6m home in Cheltenham, whilst Mrs Thursfield was given a £1.1m cash settlement and a heavily mortgaged home in Detroit.

And, just in case you thinking of it, transferring all your assets abroad will not help you avoid paying what the Courts deem a fair provision for your spouse either.

Greatly suspicious of what has been presented in court, Mrs Thursfield hired private detectives and a forensic accountant to conduct an investigation that revealed an undisclosed £1.5m home in the Bahamas and a £3.5m deposit to a Swiss bank account. She successfully petitioned the High Court to have a ‘freezing order’ placed over her ex-husband’s assets.

There have been a number of divorce cases in the media recently where an individual has been caught out lying about their assets and the Courts have been cracking down on them with serious punishments, so I am telling you now, trying to manipulate your financial affairs is not in any way, shape or form,

In court, Mr Thursfield’s lawyers said that the divorce settlement and the upkeep on the various properties he owns, plus school and university fees for their child, had left him penniless. However, the High Court Judge who heard the case ruled that Mr Thursfield had been deliberately misleading about his financial affairs, found

A: No, no, NO! Absolutely not.

him in contempt of court and sentenced him in absentia to two years in prison. And it isn’t just millionaires. Stephen Hughes, a 48 year old from Morecambe, was jailed for 18 months for fraud and perjury at the end of last year after it was discovered he had tried to avoid giving his wife a full divorce settlement by making it appear as though he had spent a large sum of money on building work at a property that he owned in Cape Verde. During divorce proceedings in 2009, Hughes presented the judge with a number of cheques and invoices that he had falsified to make it look as though he had paid out substantial sums of money for the building work, when he had actually been transferring the cash to alternative bank accounts and using the money to go on expensive holidays. The main objective of the courts is to allow a couple to separate and, as far as possible, move on with their lives in the standard of living they had enjoyed whilst in a relationship. For that reason, if as in the couple of examples above, it is discovered an individual has deliberately deceived the Courts, there will be serious repercussions. Always remember the well-known oath used in courtrooms and tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. By Emma Cole

LIFE BEGINS

Confessions Of An Armchair Archaelogist For many years, archaeology has been a passion of mine. Not actually doing it, you understand, but viewing endless TV documentaries on ancient Egypt and Rome and obsessively following various series of “Time Team”. Last year I moved to the countryside and decided to turn my interest into a hobby. I fantasised about standing in the middle of a field, with muddy knees and earth-caked hands, having just discovered a stunning mosaic floor. Without doubt I had the enthusiasm to be an amateur archaeologist, but how could I get involved? When I discovered that our local archaeological group was about to meet, I was determined to go. Unfortunately the day of the meeting was damp, cold and windy: as I trudged along I found myself looking forward to taking my seat in a warm, dry church hall. This reaction to a bit of rain made me wonder if I would be feeling so enthusiastic if, instead of a aiming for a 58

By Kate McLelland

brightly lit hall, I was heading off to spend long hours in a muddy field? Once inside the hall, I sat and listened to a members of the group speak eloquently about their particular archaeological passions. Each talk was accompanied by a carefully prepared laptop presentation, with photographs, maps and information. There was even a quiz on local historical sites: my dismal score reminded me why I had come to the meeting in the first place. When the presentations ended I was eager to find out more about the society. I was told that sessions mostly comprised of talks by interesting guest speakers, but for more active members there would be a chance to go on field walks, which take place in the winter when vegetation has died back. With farmers’ permission, walkers examine the earth for signs of pottery, flints and other finds. Apparently there is quite a good success rate for these random discoveries, provided the group knows where to look. By law all finds belong to the owner of the land on which the field walk takes place and an official agreement between landowner and searcher is often put in place to determine who

keeps the items that are found. It is recommended that all finds be recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme (www.finds. org.uk). The scheme encourages finders to record their discoveries with a local Finds Liaison Officer, who will enter the items onto a database for researchers to study and the public to view. Unfortunately, opportunities to get involved with digs taking place on established archaeological sites are extremely limited, although some of the larger societies do manage to get some hands-on experience. Sites must be overseen by qualified, professional archaeologists to ensure that all finds are properly investigated, recorded and preserved, so the chances for enthusiastic amateurs like me to get involved will always be limited. As I sat in the hall at the end of the meeting, finishing a cup of tea and chatting to a large group of enthusiastic, knowledgeable people, I felt that was among old friends. It occurred to me that there was enjoyment to be had in simply listening to people who are passionate about their subject. Call me an armchair archaeologist, but there’s a lot to be said for hearing about other people’s discoveries, particularly when it’s cold and rainy outside!

News from Chandlers Ford & Winchester MP Steve Brine Last time I promised readers my view from the green benches of Budget 2014. One highlight for me had to include measures targeted to help savers and pensioners and I know big changes to the annuity rules – as well as the introduction of the new pensioner ‘bond’ – will be warmly welcomed in my constituency. Equally the rise in the personal tax allowance, which from April 2015 will be £10,500, means since 2010 a typical basic rate taxpayer will be paying £800 less in tax and that means you keeping more of the money you’ve worked hard to earn. I thought the Chancellor deliberately stayed away from

gimmicks and short-term announcements and focused on delivering a workmanlike Budget that is part of our long-term plan to give economic security to local families and relief to pensioners. See more at www.stevebrine.com/budget2014 Secondly, our local hospital ... The response to my Health Check Survey has been huge and the turnout for my public meeting at the end of March was the same. LIFE LIST

What We Learned From 1970s Television Some say television has become our unofficial childminder and educator, even if programme quality has improved over the years. However, there’s a lot to be said for the way things used to be on the goggle box. Dixon of Dock Green and Z-Cars taught us how to behave, what not to do and the notion of consequences. It also introduced us to community policing without the need for a mission statement.

Property Maintenance and Decorating Professional tradesmen at affordable prices

Interior and Exterior Decorating 5* Accredited Velux Installer

Blue Peter proved that pretty much anything is possible with empty yoghurt pots, loo roll holders, coat hangers, sticky backed plastic, and a little creativity.

Conservatories

If children’s TV finishes by 6pm it’s easier to do your homework, go out and play, or read a book.

All Roofing Work

Disney programmes were a big event on bank holidays. You anticipated them and appreciated them, even the rubbish parts, because you knew you wouldn’t see another one for ages. Vintage Dr Who, along with groundbreaking sci-fi programmes like Timeslip and Ace of Wands, showed us that the best special effects were in our imaginations. World of Sport demonstrated that all that was needed to make wrestling entertaining was a woman sat by the ring, shouting and waving a rolled-up umbrella. Tomorrow’s World taught us the difference between the words ‘possible’ and ‘probable’. Gerry Anderson (along with Pinky & Perky and The Woodentops) brought puppets to life. Unlike today’s reality TV shows, which turn people into puppets. Soap operas didn’t need to raise ‘issues’, just reflect real life, entertain us and give us a bit of a laugh occasionally. Ah, happy days! 66

Charitique? A new charity shop is opening in Chandlers Ford (Saturday 10th May) in the ex-car showroom in Hiltingbury, Chandlers Ford. It is part of The Hospice Shops which are jointly owned and run by Oakhaven Hospice Charity and Countess Mountbatten Hospice Charity with all monies raised being equally split. The new location is a fabulous position with space to show off their ‘boutique styled charity shop’. New manager, Jan Beavis, is excited to be part of the successful team. They need you to help with donations of quality and quirky items that can range from books, designer or other fashion wear, electrical items as well as furniture for which we can arrange collection. Volunteers also play a huge role in the charity shops, so if you can help the Chandlers Ford branch, we want to hear from you. For more information on the Chandlers Ford Shop and donations please call 02380 271013 and for information on volunteering please contact Gina Henderson: volunteer@cmhcharity.org.uk

MOTORING

2014 Mitsubishi ASX By James Batchelor

Crossovers are fast becoming the default car choice of the masses. Consumers love their commanding driving position and pumped-up looks while it seems manufacturers can’t stop releasing new versions. Pretty much all the mainstream makers now have an SUV in their range and that boom in choice for buyers has also meant those manufacturers that arrived early to the crossover party have been forced to up their games and release refreshed models. Skoda has recently renosed its Yeti, Nissan has worked its magic on the built-in-Britain Qashqai and now it’s Mitsubishi’s turn with its ASX. When it first appeared in 2010, the ASX was one of the more niche models in the segment, but even then it managed to chalk up 8,000 sales in its first year. However, a devastatingly high Yen put up the price of imports and buyers fled to rivals. A year later sales had dropped to just 3,000. But Mitsubishi is bouncing back. The exchange rate has moved back in the maker’s favour, prices have dropped and the ASX has had a makeover. Mitsubishi has slashed prices of the ASX by an average of 10 per cent and for 2014 it’s been treated to a nip and tuck with plush interior fittings, new suspension tweaks and a panoramic glass roof with LED 74

mood lighting on the top-of-therange models. Joining the 1.6-litre petrol and 1.8-litre diesel is a 2.2-litre diesel unit poached from the larger Outlander off-roader. The larger diesel develops 148bhp and 380Nm of torque. Naturally that means more power and shove, but thankfully not at the cost of fuel economy. At 48.7mpg on the combined cycle, the ASX4 2.2 diesel is more economical than a number of rivals’ 2.0-litre diesel offerings, including the sector’s allconquering Nissan Qashqai. There’s also a new automatic gearbox thrown into the mix. Some models get a switchable four-wheel drive system. One press of a button on the centre console sends 30 per cent of the car’s power to the rear wheels, while a second prod locks the centre diff and splits power 50/50 front and rear. The ASX’s small dimensions always meant it was good to drive, but road noise was a bit of a let it down. These new 2014 models come with improved sound deadening, which has helped a little, and the bouncy ride of previous ASXs has disappeared thanks to retuned suspension. That’s not to say it’s a perfect driving experience though. The steering still lacks crispness, there’s a fair degree of body roll and the ASX is sadly just not as

refined or as comfortable as a Kia Sportage or Skoda Yeti. Mitsubishi has splashed out on upgrading the interior. There are some more up-market plastics, “piano black” materials now adorn the dashboard and the top spec ASX4 gets that aforementioned panoramic glass roof, which makes the cabin wonderfully light and airy. But despite Mitsubishi’s efforts, compared to rivals, the interior still lacks a certain sparkle. That said, with revised pricing, unique styling and an enviable reputation for reliability, the ASX certainly deserves a second look if you’re in the market for a crossover – and if the sales figures are anything to go by, there’s a high chance that’s most of you. The range kicks off at £14,999, while the range topping ASX4 2.2 (tested here) is £23,899.

Model: Mitsubishi ASX 4 2.2 Di-D 4WD Auto Price: £23,899 Engine: 2.2-litre, fourcylinder turbocharged diesel Power: 148bhp, 380Nm Max speed: 118mph 0-60mph: 10.6s MPG: 48.7mpg Emissions: 153g/km
