Hello and Welcome At the time of writing my editor's letter this month, spring has - at last - arrived. My apologies if, by the time you read this a week later, it appears to have departed again! I generally don't write about the weather, after all you can see it for yourselves. But having lifted my head above the clouds I now realise that throughout the winter (the loooong winter) people have been out there planning events knowing that the cold couldn't last for ever. So more than usual we have a great selection of outdoor activities to draw your attention to - The Southampton Maritime Festival, North Baddesley Village Day, National Open Gardens and other delightful fairs and days out. In addition, we’ve listed all the events we know about even if a little further afield on our website DiscoverCommunity.co.uk. Of course with the warmth and sunshine comes growth in our gardens. Although sitting out in the sun for half an hour in late April was joyous, that was only the case when my eyes were shut. When I opened them I saw a winter of neglect in my garden with some shrubs standing naked
of leaf, never to be clothed again, and others moving into any vacant space they could find at an alarming rate. Initially it was quite satisfying pulling up a few weeds and trimming the odd tree (albeit that kitchen scissors didn't do much of a job, the secateurs having disappeared in the garage). But once the pile of waste built up, arms were scratched and ankles bitten, my enthusiasm for actually finishing the job disappeared behind a cloud. Yes I admit, I scuttled inside and went straight to the gardening section in here. From a tidy up to a redesign, we really have some great local people to help out. Tania PS: The front cover this month is taken at Beaulieu in the New Forest.

DISCOVER SHORT STORY
Short Story The May Day Parade Cyril helped the May Queen and her two attendants climb onto the straw bails in the trailer. The girls, clutching posies of wild roses and gypsophila, looked lovely in their white dresses and floral crowns. “Hold on tight to the bailing twine,” Cyril repeated sternly. Ten years ago an attendant had not heeded his advice and that had been a sorry sight. Cyril clambered into the tractor and started the ignition. With a blast of fumes and noise, they left Glebe Farm and began the bumpy journey down the muddy track towards the main road, where the marching band were tuning up their instruments. Clouds were hanging over the village after last night’s heavy rain, but promised to burn off by lunchtime, when Cyril has plans to be sitting outside the Nag’s Head with a pint of bitter as his reward. As he pulled off the farm track the marching band fell into formation in front of them, and the parade began. Cyril followed the band up Chapel Lane. He took the job of chauffeuring the May Queen very seriously. He had even worn his best overalls for the occasion. People were out, lining the streets. The previous year, for the Jubilee, many villagers had worn masks of Her Majesty, and Cyril thought it was the strangest sight he had ever seen. But this year, things were different again. He could see folk squeezed onto the pavement ahead of him, waving their flags and cheering, but as the tractor approached, the flags drooped and the cheering fell silent. They frowned at him. Anyone would think they had never seen a May Day Parade before, and had no idea how to behave. “They can’t be from ‘round here”, Cyril thought. Mrs Cramp, from the Post Office, called something up to him. Her words were lost over the rumble of the engine, but her expression was not. “Poor gal looks peeved”, Cyril thought. “She’s thinking

the same thing as me – funny crowd”. As he turned towards the Village Green he slowed down so that everyone could have a good look at the trailer. The local school children had spent all morning decorating it with balloons, tissue paper flowers and bunting. A few young kids waved their flags, but most people just stood and stared. “Miserable bunch”, Cyril muttered to himself. He’d never seen such an unappreciative crowd. Finally he turned onto the Green. The Brass band started ‘When the saints go marching in’ and Cyril drove his precious cargo between the cream tea stall and the bouncy castle. He gave the horn a friendly peep and switched off the engine just as the marching band did one final turn. The music trailed off as though the trumpets had suddenly run out of air, which was an unusual way to end the song, Cyril thought. Straightening his cap, he jumped down from the tractor to attend to the May Queen. To his astonishment she wasn’t there. Nor were her two attendants, or the trailer and bails of straw. Somewhere between Glebe Farm and the Green the whole lot had vanished. The sun peeped shyly from behind the clouds just as, red faced and panting, the May Queen and her attendants came running onto the Green, their posies drooping and their dresses dripping with mud. There was a cheer of relief from the crowd and the band played ‘We’ll meet again’. The landlord of the Nags Head handed a crestfallen Cyril his pint. “Well done, lad”, he said, unable to stifle his laugh. “And for next year’s parade, try to remember to hitch the tractor to the trailer first”. Charity Football Day The National Citizen Service (NCS) is a nonmilitary, voluntary national service for 16 and 17-year olds in England. The scheme takes place in the summer and autumn and in both cases begins with a residential visit to an activity centre which coincides with school holidays.. After this volunteers create a social action project to raise awareness of a particular issue. Eighteen Barton Peverill students aged 16-17 have been participating in the scheme and in order to complete the award they have organised a charity fundraising event. On the 2nd June there will be two five a side football tournaments taking place at the Mountbatten School in Romsey. There will be one in the morning from 10am to 1pm for 15-17 year olds with a £100 prize, and one in the afternoon from 2pm to 5pm for 18+ with a £250 prize and corporate cup. The entrance fee for teams to enter the tournaments is £30 and

North Baddesley Village Day North Baddesley village day is a free day out for the family. It takes place on the recreation ground in North Baddesley on 18th May 2013. Bringing together charities, groups and businesses it is a great family day out, with arena events including the return of the popular Dog Dancing and Kids Rome petting farm, both kindly sponsored by the Parish Council. There are also several new events for this year. The very popular beer tent is kindly provided by The Bishop Blaize in Romsey. The event is not for profit, so any money made from our Grand Raffle will be donated to North Baddesley groups and charities. Cat behaviour is a fascinating area. Unlike dogs, cats are much more independent and rely strongly on body language to communicate. This is one of the main reasons why cat behavioural problems are still less frequently reported in veterinary practice, as they are much more difficult to interpret. In today’s society more and more people are opting to share their lives with furry felines, making most areas very densely populated with cats. As cats are very territorial this inevitably causes emotional stress which cats can show in urine spraying, vocalising, fighting, over grooming etc. Not only stress, but pain and other causes can show as changes in the cat’s behaviour and sometimes be misinterpreted as being “naughty” or “getting old”. If you’ve noticed any of the above mentioned behavioural changes or others in your cat, please don’t hesitate to contact us. In most cases with identifying the underlying cause for the behaviour we can help you and your feline friend. Cats@Seadown, 023 8027 5011

Porsche Panamera GTS It’s the Noel Edmonds of the car world: Some love his fuzzy patch of facial hair, while others detest his banker-bothering ways. Much like the Panamera. OK, not a lot like the Panamera, but you get my point, sort of. This baboon-bottomed, super-sized porker isn’t for everyone. It’s big, brash and in your face – and this jazzed up GTS version is even more raucous. But is it too jazzy? We find out...
What is it?
It’s Porsche’s executive-transporting-super-giant machine with added fizz-bang-wallop. The GTS sits below the Turbo, but is still ludicrously swift for a car and as long as your average P&O ferry. Slightly harder, sportier and more involving, the GTS is for punting pen-pushers to the office with a bit more vigour and involvement.
What’s under the bonnet?
Under its Bergerac-esque conk is an utterly brilliant 4.8-litre lump lifted from the Panamera S. In GTS guise, it gets a bit more stomp – up 30bhp to 424bhp with torque at 520Nm. This is mated to a brilliant, self-shifting seven-speed ‘box which makes for rapid getaways. Despite its bulk, it will rival a BMW M5 in the 0-60mph sprint, covering it in 4.5s whilst going on to hit 174mph top whack.
What’s the kit like?
Suitably impressive, but like all Porsches you’ll pay through the nose for it. This test model had a whopping £15,159 worth of options on it. The red paint cost £2,517 alone, then there’s £3,197 for the dynamic chassis control and torque vectoring plus ceramic brakes cost a scary £5,924. You even pay £295 for the heated seats.
Any rivals?
Oh, you betcha. All premium manufacturers have a rival or two. BMW could flog you an M5 or a 7 Series, Audi has an S8 (which is awesome), Jaguar an XJ probably in R trim. And Mercedes would no doubt sell you something slightly duller like an
20

S Class. But what you really want from them is something with an AMG badge. Anyway, you get our point – there’s lots of choice.
Is it any good?
In a word, yes. I was thinking of ending things there, but that wouldn’t have been much of a review. The GTS is quite possibly the best Panamera available. It’s rapid, incredibly entertaining, engaging to drive and sounds fiery. There are three driving modes, but I can’t remember them all as the only one you really want is Sport Plus. It sounds better, it goes quicker and the steering feels crisp. On the road, the four wheel drive makes it feel planted and it’s one of the comfiest cars over distance I’ve tried for a long time.
The verdict
I want one... and I wouldn’t have said that about a Panamera before I drove the GTS version. For someone who likes involvement in their daily drive, but comfort to boot, the GTS ticks a lot of boxes. The looks won’t float everyone’s boat, but they certainly grew on me over my week with the barge. However, you’re going to need pretty deep pockets to enjoy this Porsche as the options alone cost more than three Dacia Sandero’s! But I know which I’d rather have on the driveway.

Bring in the May One of the best indications that summer is about to arrive is when Britain’s hedgerows explode with the pink and white blossoms of the hawthorn. The hawthorn is one of those quintessentially English trees: although quietly unobtrusive for most of the year, it bursts into spectacular life in the late spring, with flowers crowded so densely together they look like snowfall. In the autumn it glows with clusters of red berries. No wonder the tree features so strongly in ancient folklore. The old name for hawthorn was “may” and the flower of the may tree has long been considered a symbol of hope. It even gave its name to The Mayflower, the famous ship that sailed from England in 1620, transporting a stalwart band of pilgrims to build a new life in America. As its alternative name suggests, hawthorn was central to ancient May Day celebrations. The old Celtic festival of May Day was known as ‘Beltane’ after the Celtic god of light, or the sun. The beginning of summer was also celebrated in Ancient Rome at the Floralia festival (dedicated to the flower goddess Flora), which took place at roughly the same time. May Day celebrations in Britain were probably a hybrid of both traditions mixed up with Druidic tree worship, and the introduction of Christianity did little to dispel these pagan traditions. On the first day of May, villagers would wake at daybreak and roam through the countryside, gathering flowers and hawthorn twigs to decorate their houses. A maypole – usually the trunk of a birch tree, stripped of its branches and decorated with ribbons and flowers - was set up in the middle of the village green. In olden times maypoles were constructed with three rings on the top - the highest and smallest was made of hawthorn. The community danced around the pole, singing

traditional songs, while the men of the village performed Morris dances and the prettiest girl, dressed in floral garlands, was crowned Queen of the May. Occasionally a May King was also chosen, and the pair ruled over the festivities. In Elizabethan times, the king and queen were given the names ‘Robin Hood’ and ‘Maid Marian’. These celebrations were derived from ancient fertility rituals and the ‘greenwood marriages’ that took place provide clear evidence of this. Often young girls came home from their country rambles with more than a garland of flowers. As one observer wrote: “I have hearde of tenne maidens whiche went to set May, and nine of them came home with childe.” May Day festivities reached their height in England during the Middle Ages but in 1644 the Puritans passed a law which made them illegal. This attempt to repress the celebrations eventually failed, mainly because they were too deeply rooted in rural culture. When the monarchy was restored some years later and Charles II came to the throne, people all over the country put up maypoles as a sign of loyalty to the crown. For the next two hundred years the old customs continued, but interest in May Day traditions began to fade. They enjoyed a brief revival in the Victorian era but any connection to fertility rites was deliberately overlooked and maypole dancing was reduced to an innocent children’s game. Sadly by this time the hawthorn – once the embodiment of hope for the coming summer – had also lost its significance, becoming just another tree in the British landscape. By Kate McLelland

Frustrated with how your PC or laptop is performing? We regularly get customers contacting us reporting that the computer they purchased years ago has become very slow and almost unusable. Sometimes in desperation and on advice from a friend or even their telephone/ broadband provider, they have run their system install disk and wiped the machine clean. The problem here is that whilst on occasion what is termed a format/reload is necessary in order to resolve system problems, it does wipe everything off of the hard drive, including all the saved documents such as letters, photographs and programs. But in the majority of cases it isn’t necessary to take that drastic a measure. The reason systems become slow are varied but more often than not it is simply the result of an accumulation of temporary/junk files, redundant registry items and memory sapping software. As each item of software updates (especially some internet security applications) the amount of disk space or memory required to run it gets more demanding and can end up making the system work much harder than it is capable of. There are good and bad utilities available on the internet that promise to ‘speed up your PC’ but some are in fact riddled with malware – particularly where they are offered free of charge - and end up causing more problems than they are worth. In over 90% of the cases that come into our workshop, we are able to carry out a cleanup of the system that the ordinary Windows tools fall short of. Also with RAM memory being so much cheaper, we can install additional modules to make the computer run much faster and more efficiently. By removing memory hungry software and replacing it with leaner alternatives (often free)
it is possible to ease the burden on your system even further and there are other useful tips and measures that can make a real difference to how your computer runs. So if you are frustrated with how your PC or laptop is performing, just remember that from time to time we all need a bit of looking after or an energy boost and it doesn’t always mean that if your computer is running slowly then it has to be replaced. Southampton Maritime Festival The Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology on behalf of the Southampton Heritage Federation is delighted to announce the Southampton Maritime Festival, taking place on Sunday 5th and Monday 6th May 2013 at the Ocean Cruise Terminal, Southampton. This exciting new event promises to celebrate the long and proud maritime heritage of Southampton in style. Never before has an event of this scale been seen in Southampton! The Festival will be taking over the docks and water within Dock Gate 4 to bring you a whole host of activities and attractions that hark back to the Second World War with a 1940s theme. There will be a wide range of historic vessels in attendance, including a flotilla of Dunkirk Little ships, numerous displays and demonstrations and even a Lancaster bomber fly over. With so much going on, it’ll be sure to keep the whole family entertained! A highlight of the festival will be the arrival of the Steam Tug Challenge as she returns to Southampton, fresh from her recent Heritage Lottery Funded refit. Challenge, a veteran of the Second World War, will be accompanied by a flotilla of Dunkirk Little Ships. His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent, patron of the Dunkirk Little Ships Restoration Trust, will also attend. Heritages buses will provide a park and ride service to the docks from the city centre throughout the event and the SS Shieldhall will offer cruises up and down Southampton Water. Amongst the numerous displays and demonstrations over the course of two days will

be Second World War re-enactors, vintage Rolls Royce cars, and the Historical Diving Society demonstrating ‘Hard Hat’ or Standard Diving Gear. Visitors will be able to try their hand at controlling Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), see the Pufferspheres from the National Oceanography Centre, and learn more about Southampton’s historic trams. They can explore the various exhibits and stalls of heritage organisations and traders or take a pit-stop at one of many eateries while enjoying the live music and entertainment. The fleet of historic vessels will be moored alongside the terminal, waiting to tell their colourful stories. As well as being a fantastic day out for all the family, Southampton Maritime Festival will raise awareness of the city’s rich seafaring traditions. The Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology is urging local residents in particular to get involved; whether people wish to enjoy the attractions or join in as a valued volunteer, they can help make the festival an event for Southampton to be proud of. The Festival is sponsored by Associated British Ports, Southampton and Williams Shipping. It is supported by Southampton City Council and the National Oceanography Centre. Your Legal Options For Divorce Q: My husband and I have decided to divorce. I’ve never worked or handled any of our finances, feel completely out of my depth and am scared I am going to end up losing out. What can I do?
Claire, Hamble
A: To start with, Claire, you need to remember
two things. The first is that the main objective of the divorce process is for two people to leave a marriage of reasonable length as near as possible to the lifestyle they had when they were married. The second is that it is not your responsibility to discover your husband’s financial information – there are professionals, procedures and laws that will do all that for you. With a recent raft of cases being reported about wives being cheated out of their husband’s fortunes, I can see how outside information may be leaving you feeling vulnerable. Scandalous cases such as that of oil tycoon Michael Prest who despite being ordered to pay £270,000 a year to his ex-wife Yasmin, is reportedly paying her just £150 a week because his money is being allegedly ‘hidden’ in offshore bank accounts, are very much the exception to the norm (that legal battle is said to have already cost £3 million in legal fees with accusations of Prest establishing a ‘cheat’s charter’ for divorcing husbands.) Unless your husband is a multi-billionaire businessman, you should have no such worries, but I can tell from your question that you are feeling anxious and alone, so you must find help in managing your situation. You need a matrimonial solicitor acting for you for two very important reasons. The first is to establish finances. You don’t say how long you have been married, or whether you have any
children, but these factors need to be taken into consideration when planning for the continued wellbeing of all members of your family. Your husband needs to give details of what he earns, spends on the household and any debts from mortgages, loans or credit cards that have been incurred over the course of the marriage. Attention will also be paid to your husband’s future prospects. Is he on a successful career ladder? Would the family have benefited from pay rises in the near future? The other crucial issue is the fact that you do not work. Did you give up a career to be a wife and/or mother? Have you qualifications, skills or experience in a particular area? If you do have children, depending on their age and the care needed, what time will you have to be able to go back to work? I once acted for the mother of a disabled child who needed full time specialist care at home, which inevitable precluded her from being able to go out to work. All these details need to be compiled, examined and presented, initially in mediation between you and your husband and potentially in court. It may seem intrusive, but all these matters are treated with the utmost confidentiality and need to be presented to anyone who has to make a decision about your future. You will most likely find that once your solicitor has asked all these questions, gathered information and explained your position, you will be able to see more clearly and hopefully gain some confidence from the understanding of your situation. In cases such as yours, investing in legal advice is the best way to ensure that you get the life you are entitled after the end of a marriage because once an order is made, there is no going back. by Catherine Maxfield

DISCOVER LIFE BEGINS
Life Begins Facing up to those milestone birthdays For my 30th birthday party I sent out blackedged cards that looked exactly like funeral invitations. My guests were asked to wear funeral attire and when the day arrived I gleefully transformed my flat into something resembling a funeral parlour. There was great hilarity as the first guests – clad entirely in black - started to arrive, but as more and more ‘mourners’ gathered in my living room, the mood changed and people began talking in subdued whispers. At the end of the evening I vowed never to celebrate another milestone birthday again. Having missed my 40th because I was working abroad, I came under increasing pressure from friends and family to mark my 50th birthday “properly”. So how should you approach those important milestone birthdays? Individuals from the Baby Boomer generations of the 1950s and ‘60s often celebrate their milestone birthdays in spectacular fashion: jumping out of airplanes, reuniting with lifelong friends or arranging events in exotic locations. If the date is fast approaching and you’re not sure how to meet the challenge, you have three basic options: a) Pretend it’s not happening. Gone are the days when it was possible to pass under the radar when a key event such as a birthday or anniversary fell due. You know that great little app that sends you a reminder about everyone’s birthdays: “It’s Gareth’s birthday next week and he’ll be 45 years old”? Well I hate to break the news, but you’re not the only one who signed up for it. There’s nowhere to hide in the 21st century. b) Agree to all suggestions You know what it’s like: as soon as a number nine appears on your birthday cake you’re under immediate pressure to “do something special” the following year.
40
C A L L D I S CO V E R M AG A Z I N E S O N 02 3 8 02 7 6 3 61
One way to deal with well-meaning suggestions is to nod in agreement, then do nothing. As the date draws near you can fob people off with lines such as “I tried to reserve a table for fifteen but the restaurant’s completely booked up now”. However, if your friends and relations are the proactive kind, then be warned: this tactic may result in multiple celebrations. c) Go for it Your third option is probably the most straightforward one: simply seize the opportunity that this special birthday presents. Whatever milestone may be coming up, you can only pass it once in your life so you might as well have fun as you do so. Enjoyment is the key word here – this shouldn’t be the kind of gathering where you start to worry whether to invite your dreary cousin Monica who always cries after two glasses of wine. Choose a venue that you like, or an activity that you really enjoy and bring everyone along with you. If you haven’t much money then a big picnic in your local park may be better than squeezing your family round an expensive restaurant table: you’ll only spend the evening dreading the moment the bill arrives. Although most of us shudder at the prospect of entering another decade, a milestone birthday presents a unique opportunity for you to reflect on your life and celebrate with the people you love. If my 30th birthday taught me anything, it’s that resistance is useless: when faced with that milestone date you might as well give in and party with good grace. By Kate McLelland

Awbridge, Dunbridge & Mottisfont Walk Walk Distance 4.2 miles A downloadable pdf of the walk and enlarged map is availabe at www.discovercommunity.co.uk
Historical Notes The lake at Awbridge Danes was excavated in the 1920s to provide work for the local unemployed, each man being paid one shilling (10p) a day and a loaf of bread. Roman occupation of the area is confirmed by tiles, pottery and coins being found at Awbridge House, dating from the late roman period of AD 307. The names Danes Road and Awbridge Danes record the presence of Danish occupation of the area, possibly from the 11th or 12th centuries. Mottisfont church is a Grade I listed building originally of 12th century origin that initially claimed pastoral responsibility for Mottisfont, Lockerley and Broughton. Its earliest parts predate Mottisfont Abbey. Among its artefacts, the church contains a 17th century clock which has no face and no pendulum. Its movement derives its energy solely from hung weights and a bell is rung on the hour. Which hour is of course anybodies guess. The modern road that runs between Awbridge, Lockerley, the Tytherleys, Broughton and the A30 was originally a turnpike {toll) road in the mid 18th century. Similarly, the short stretch of road from East Dean joining this road was also a toll road.

Professional Tree Surgery & Hedge Trimming Sound advice from Josh Laurence of J.L. Tree Care It is the time of year when we turn our attention once more to our gardens and trees. But does your tree have a TPO?
WHAT IS A TREE PRESERVATION ORDER?
Tree Preservation Orders, also known as TPOs were introduced in the late 1940s to enable Local Planning Authorities to protect important trees. The orders can be made on single trees, groups of trees, areas of trees or whole woodlands. TPO laws prohibit the cutting down, uprooting, topping, lopping, wilful damage or wilful destruction of trees without prior consent from your Local Planning Authority.
WHY YOU SHOULD CHECK IF YOUR TREE HAS A TPO?
Pruning or cutting down protected trees without the appropriate consent can result in prosecution and a maximum fine of £20,000 for each offence. If you are unsure if your tree has a TPO or if you are living in a Conservation Area, always check first with your local council.
Josh Laurence of J.L. Tree Care Proficiency Test Council Certificate). You could even ask to see the Contractors NPTC card which is proof of competency in a range of skills, including the safe use of chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders, tree climbing and aerial rescue. Choosing a Tree Surgeon wisely will result in your trees being safely and expertly kept in top condition. Josh Laurence, J.L Tree Care ‘Professional Tree Surgery & Hedge Trimming’ Tel: 02380 862975 / 07919886166
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR TREE DOES HAVE A TPO?
You can usually still carry out work to your tree as long as you first submit a written application to the Authority. These application forms, along with helpful guides are found on your local council’s websites. After you have submitted your application the council will view the tree and make a decision within 6-8 weeks, informing you what work is permitted or not. A good Arborist will guide you through the process of TPO applications, advising on the correct terms and tree surgery methods required, increasing the likelihood of you receiving prompt permission from your local authority.
CHOOSING A PROFESSIONAL TREE SURGEON
Tree surgery is a highly skilled and dangerous operation, don’t be tempted to do the work yourself, invest in employing a professional Arborist (Tree Surgeon). Ensure you choose an experienced and insured contractor who is fully qualified in Arboriculture, holding a NPTC (National We b: d i s c o v e r m a g a z i n e s .c o .u k , S a l e s : ke v i n @ d i s c o v e r m a g a z i n e s .c o .u k

Garden Hide and Seek by Pippa Greenwood However much effort you make with your garden, you can be sure that there will still be a few things that look awful. You may have made (or hope to make) beautiful borders, sensational shrubbery and lots more besides, but how do you cope with those things you just cannot seem to hide? A washing line: It may be essential but it rarely adds to the appeal of the garden. If yours is like mine and consists of two large poles with a line between them, try growing a pretty climber up the poles. If you use a self clinging plant such as variegated ivy it will do its own thing without any form of additional support. Alternatively make a chicken wire, trellis ‘box’ or frame around the posts and then allow the climber to scramble up, using plant ties if necessary too. Summer flowering clematis will look great or you could make a seasonal display for summer only using pretty climbers such as sweet peas. If you do use one of the more vigorous climbers then be prepared to do some intermittent pruning to ensure that it does not use your washing line as a plant support. A decrepit shed or moth-eaten garage: Garden buildings may be useful but all too often they are also a real eyesore. Sometimes a thorough scrub of the walls will do the trick, or why not make a feature out of the shed or garage and

re-paint it – perhaps using a masonry paint or wood paint that tones in with existing garden structures, the colour of your window frames or perhaps simply a colour that tickles your fancy. Consider erecting a trellis on one or more of the vertical surfaces and grow a selection of favourite climbers up it to make an even more attractive feature. If the garden is inclined to be a little gloomy then it helps if you paint any surfaces such as garage or shed walls with a paler colour – it is amazing just how much light this will bounce back into your garden. Heating fuelled by gas from a huge cylinder or oil from a large green tank: I’m the owner of one of the mammoth green metal tanks and as much as I enjoy a well-heated house I detest the tank and because it has to be sited in an accessible position so it can be re-filled with relative ease; you cannot lose it in the depths of the garden. I use hazel wattle hurdles to hide ours, which are perfect as they also match with the adjacent boundary fence. You could use standard fence panels in the same way and again planting them with climbers or scramblers will help. Whatever you do, make sure that you check on it from time to time and remove excessive climber growth so that the tank remains accessible. Is it the neighbouring garden that harbours

the eye sore which makes you want to retreat back into your house? Something nasty next door is of course even harder to conceal but why not add a layer of trellis to the top of your existing fence and then use climbers once it is in position. Hold the trellis in position using batons of wood attached to the existing fence posts or special post-joining metal sleeves that you can buy from your fencing supplier or garden centre. you can create a range of different looks to suit your gardening style. Another option is to erect a pergola or arch to obscure or break up an unsightly view or the eyesore in their garden and adding plants will help to add a bit more height and soften the outline. If you combine some of your favourite flowering climbers with some evergreen planting too, you should even achieve good effects during the seasons when the leaves have fallen from many plants. THE CHANDLERS FORD DIRECTORY LOCAL NEWS & VIEWS
Fryern Farewells A number of the Fryern Arcade businesses have either closed or are about to close in the near future. Each of the shop owners have wanted to send their personal thanks to the residents that have supported them over the years. First Raffo’s hair salon: Debbie Raffo started work as an apprentice hairdresser for Mary Cook in 1969. The salon was then called La Mar. When Debbie started work there she was just 15years, that’s 44 years ago. 21 years ago Debbie took over the salon, renaming it Raffo’s Hair Studio. The lease on the Salon has however now expired and will not be renewed. Debbie & her husband Paul would like to thank the staff and clients for their support and loyalty over the years. Southern Jewellers left the Fryern Arcade on Saturday 23 March after serving Chandlers Ford for 15 years. The unit has been a jewellers for a total of 36 years having originally been a branch of Unwin’s, the wine merchants. “I’ve
been working here for 31 years, “ says Christine (right), “and seen many generations come in over that time. Ann Wren (left) took the shop over 15 years and would like to thank all her loyal customers for their warm wishes and luck for the future. Fryern Dry Cleaners Fryern Dry Cleaners closed on the 5th April after their lease also expired. Karen has worked in the shop for 25 years but 3 years ago, bought the business with partner, Steve Sheath. “Customers can still use our services in Romsey by dropping off and picking up garments at First Class Dry Cleaners on Hiltingbury Road.” says Karen who wants to thank Chandlers Ford residents for their past custom and hope to continue to serve albeit from a different location. Paul’s Patisserie on the Hiltingbury Rd also closed during April but only temporarily. The shop needed refurbishing and the existing owner decided that it was time to hand over the reins to a new owner rather than undertake the big project himself. The new shop will also be a patisserie but at the time of going to print we had no further information.
Thornden Tennis Tournament Success Thornden Tennis Club held a Junior tournament over half-term which attracted over 100 young tennis players from all over the area – Hampshire, Wiltshire, Surrey, Dorset, Sussex and Buckinghamshire. There was tough competition in all age groups and it was good to see fair play and sportsmanship in action, not to mention that the weather was kind. It was interesting to note that boys far out-numbered girls on this occasion. The tournament was organised by Head Coach Paul Scullard, refereed by Chris Whiting from LTA, and sponsored by A&A Business Supplies. Thornden Tennis Club would like to thank all those who took part and gives congratulations to winners in the following categories:

DISCOVER MONTHLY FEATURE
9 May 1671 Colonel Blood Steals The Crown Jewels Robin Hood, Dick Turpin, Blackbeard – outlaws, highwaymen and pirates always seem to have exercised a romantic fascination on the British. One such bloodthirsty brigand who might have entered the canon but hasn’t is Thomas Blood, an Irish-born adventurer who deserves to be better known if only because almost all of his daring coups were farcical failures. Blood was born in 1618 to a landed family in County Clare. In the Civil War he joined the Royalists, but as a Presbyterian quickly realised he was on the wrong side and went over to the Roundheads. He seems to have done well in Cromwell’s army (although it’s said his rank of Colonel was self-awarded), and when the war was over he was granted confiscated Royalist lands worth £500 a year. Unfortunately for Blood, the Monarchy was restored in 1660 and his lands were returned to their original owners. Bankrupt and furious, he and a gang of similarly dispossessed desperadoes tried to kidnap the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, the Duke of Ormonde, by storming Dublin Castle. It was his first fiasco: most of the gang (including his brother) were rounded up and hanged, while Blood fled to Holland. In 1670 he had another crack at Ormonde, who had moved to London. Blood mustered another gang and tried to kidnap the duke in broad daylight. Ormonde’s servants easily fought them off, though; and once again the gang paid the price while Blood escaped, with a £1,000 reward on his head. A few months later he popped up again, this time dressed as a vicar and, accompanied by a fictitious “wife”, befriended the 77-year-old keeper of the Crown Jewels, Talbot Edwards, who had the regalia in his cellar in the Tower of London and showed them to visitors for a fee. While there, the “wife” pretended to suffer a stomach cramp, so Edwards and his wife fussed over her and gave her a glass of brandy. Thus a connection was made; and over the

ensuing weeks Blood visited often, gaining the old man’s Unknown man, formerly known as confidence and Thomas Blood, by Gerard Soest. even contracting Picture held in National Gallery. a marriage between Edwards’s daughter and his (again, fictitious) nephew. On the morning of 9 May 1671 he brought some confederates to see the jewels and, while his “nephew” kept Mrs Edwards and the daughter occupied upstairs, hit the unsuspecting Edwards over the head with a mallet and started stuffing the regalia into a sack. Which proved too small. While Blood bashed one of the crowns flat with his mallet, one gang member tried to break the sceptre in two and another stuffed the orb down his trousers. The plan had been to walk out as innocently as they’d walked in, but at this point Edwards came round and started yelling. There was no plan B. The gang tried to run but were soon caught. And then a strange thing happened. Blood demanded a personal audience with the King – and received one. And instead of waving him off to Tyburn, Charles II set him free and even granted him a pension. Conspiracy theorists maintain that this shows that the perennially cash-strapped King was in on it; but if he had been, surely he would have shut Blood’s mouth for good at the business end of a rope? Perhaps the Merry Monarch just found the blundering bandit too hilarious to hang. Blood spent the rest of his life peacefully in London, even attending court sometimes, and died in 1680. It’s a shame he’s not better known – perhaps someone should make a film of his life. A farce. By Ted Bruning

DISCOVER LOCAL NEWS & VIEWS
News from
Chandlers Ford and Winchester MP Steve Brine
There has been renewed debate in recent weeks as to whether there IS such a thing as society; most of it in the wake of Baroness Thatcher’s passing. This is odd, not least given the former Prime Minister never uttered such words but for the record, I (and she) know/knew there is. And if we ever needed proof, I always think we could do a lot worse than look very close to home here in my Winchester and Chandler’s Ford constituency. One great example is a new group I have been helping, set-up to act as a forum for local parents with children on the autistic spectrum. The Winchester Autism Group (or W.A.G for short) is doing good things and providing support for a growing number of my constituents, including those from Chandler’s Ford. I joined them shortly after Easter for coffee to meet members and hear of their experiences with the education system and other public services. If you think W.A.G can help you, please get in touch with them via www.facebook.com/ WinchesterAutismGroup The May local elections mean I have been out and about knocking on doors more than usual in my part of Chandler’s Ford, Hiltingbury and North Millers Dale and it’s been interesting to talk with constituents about the economy, Europe and a range of other national issues but the subject of rats is seemingly never far away. I am working hard liaising with Eastleigh Borough Council and the Water company on behalf of residents who have been in touch with me about this local menace. If you have a problem and can add to my evidence stack, please get in touch as this is genuinely upsetting a great many people and we need to stay on the case; steve.brine.mp@ parliament.uk Turning to Westminster and I am currently leading a big Parliamentary inquiry into breast cancer, its causes and effects as well as the

way older women are handled when they are unfortunate enough to contract the disease. I am Chair of the All-Party Breast Cancer Group, which is one of the most active in Parliament. If you are affected or know someone who is by the condition, you may be interested to take a look at my special web-page www.stevebrine.com/ breastcancer via which you can also follow the progress of the inquiry. Secondly, I held a special debate recently on the subject of police cautions for young people. Of course I believe young people should be punished according to the rule of law, like anybody else, when they do wrong but how we respond to often low-level bad behaviour by youngsters has the potential to blight the rest of their lives by giving them a permanent black mark no matter how they have behaved before or since. Personally, I don’t think our country can afford to, in effect, put some young people on the scrap heap before they had ever had a chance and it seems the Government agrees with me – even if it was after a rather useful ruling from the courts! A change in the law is imminent and if I helped even a little bit, I am pleased. Finally, I may see some of you at the Funtasia which returns to Fryern Recreation Ground on the afternoon of Monday 6th May. Please join me in keeping your fingers crossed for some sunshine as some of us are still drying out from last year! Lots more going on - in the constituency and in Westminster – and you can catch-up on much of it via www.stevebrine.com.
