Have I got a deal for you I’ve noticed over the years that bargaining is not a thing that many Brits do. Being a largely reserved bunch, we accept the price as is, and buy online rather than speaking to people. Still, who doesn’t love a deal and there’s money to be saved for those that ask.
Sometimes you don’t even need to ask, especially in a competitive market like phone or utility services.. I was looking recently at changing my phone and broadband provider. I’d narrowed down my supplier of choice, was at the point of pressing the ‘go’ button on their website, when I realised there was something I wasn’t clear about. So I phoned them up. I didn’t mention that I was just about to buy online, but having discussed my query the salesperson then made me an offer of six months at half price. I can understand the logic; I might have just hung up and still not quite pressed the go button, and with the offer he got a ‘yes’ from me. So I’m thinking ‘how good is that’? But if he was prepared to give 6 months at half price without being asked, why didn’t I ask if he could give me more? I didn’t even think of it, that’s why! It’s a game though. If I’d phoned with my query and opened with ‘I’m about to buy online but have a question…’ I’d likely have been offered nothing because I’d already said ‘I’m going to buy’. Whilst you aren’t about to start haggling with the shops in West Quay, or asking for a discount on a loaf of bread in the supermarket, spotting the opportunity to save a few pounds here and there is a worthwhile effort. Just don’t be offended if the seller gives a firm no!

LIFE BEGINS
Confronting the Cold Some Simple Tips to Keep Safe and Warm Over Winter By Kate McLelland Over 24,000 people will be so badly affected by the cold this winter that their lives will be at risk. The charity Age UK has estimated that 1.7 million older people in Britain cannot afford to heat their homes, and over a third of those people have admitted to living mainly in one room to save on energy bills. In an affluent country such as ours, it’s truly shocking to realise there are people who can’t afford to stay warm in winter. But it’s also surprising to learn that we Brits have some of the least energy-efficient homes in Europe. Many winter deaths and illnesses could be avoided if we had better insulation in our houses. In future we can only hope that all new homes will benefit from good insulation and “green” technology, but the energy efficiency of millions of existing houses could be improved by simple techniques such as cavity insulation. You can find out whether you are eligible for a government grant towards home improvements by using the Energy Grants Calculator at www. gov.uk. The government also provides 6
one-off payments to help with fuel bills. People born on or before 5 July 1952 will get tax-free, automatic payments of between £100-£300 if they are receiving the State Pension or another social security benefit (not including Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, Child Benefit or Universal Credit). You can learn more about Winter Fuel Payments by calling 08459 151515 (8.30am-4.30pm, Monday to Friday) or visiting www.gov.uk/winter-fuel-payment. The Cold Weather Payments Scheme offers top-up payments of £25 to people who receive certain types of benefit (you can check your eligibility at www. gov.uk). Payments will kick in if the temperature drops to an average of 0ºC or below for seven consecutive days between 1st November 2014 and 31st March 2015. If you’re not eligible for government support, you can still take
action to keep heating bills down. Compare your current gas and electricity supplier’s prices with other providers at www.uswitch. com: you might be able to save up to £383 by switching. The expression “Every little helps” may have been hijacked by one of our leading supermarkets but it’s particularly true if you can’t afford to heat your house. Here are some more practical steps you can take to keep the cold at bay:
Clothing and exercise It’s better to wear several thin layers rather than one thick one, because each layer traps warm air close to the body. Choose clothes made from fleecy fabrics, wool or cotton. It may seem strange to wear a hat and scarf indoors but a lot of warmth is lost through the head and neck, so it’s a sensible way to guard against heat loss. Wear warm clothes in bed, including thermal underwear and bed socks: you could even keep your hat
for curtains, and even keyhole covers on doors can significantly reduce the amount of cold air that enters your home.
on in bed if it’s really cold! Try not to sit still for long periods of time, but if you have to sit, keep your feet off the ground and cover yourself with a shawl or a blanket.
Keep windows and doors (even internal doors) closed. Set your central heating to the right temperature: your main living room should be around 21ºC (70ºF) and your bedroom should be around 18ºC (65ºF). In very cold weather it’s more energy efficient to extend the period that your central heating stays on from morning to night than to turn the thermostat up.
If you allow yourself to become seriously chilled, your energy levels will wind down, making it even more difficult to keep warm. You can prevent this by getting up and moving around, at least once an hour.
Energy saving tips Draw your curtains as soon as it gets dark to stop the heat escaping. Have the central heating system regularly serviced to ensure that it is working as efficiently as possible, keep the chimney swept, check that the stopcock is working properly and take sensible steps to insulate against draughts. Thermal linings
Switch TVs and microwaves off at the wall rather than leaving them on standby, and don’t add any more water than necessary when boiling the kettle.
Food and drink Drink plenty of hot drinks throughout the day. Make sure you have regular hot meals that include carbohydrates such as potatoes, rice, pasta and bread. Have porridge with hot milk for breakfast and soups and stews for lunch and dinner. Keep healthy by eating fruit and vegetables. All this may sound rather depressing but on average the UK only experiences a maximum of five or six really cold days each year. While it’s difficult to face those freezing temperatures, it helps to know that our winter woes will quickly be forgotten as soon as the spring sunshine appears.

News from Chandlers Ford & Winchester MP Steve Brine Chandler’s Ford MP Steve Brine has secured major resurfacing work for the M3 motorway which he described as ‘absolutely fantastic’ news for thousands of his constituents. He says: “New Roads Minister John Hayes has written to me to confirm the Highways Agency will bring forward plans to resurface the M3 between junctions 9 and 14. The work will be done during the period 2015-2017 and will encompass all three lanes and the hard shoulder. “I have campaigned to bring forward the resurfacing work since my election in 2010 (and before) and last year took local councillors, as well as representatives from
Shepherds Down School in Compton, to meet the Minister at the Department for Transport in London. I have met no fewer than three roads ministers in the past four years to lobby on behalf of our area. “We had been told the carriageway passing through Winchester and Chandler’s Ford was unlikely to be resurfaced until 2020 at the earliest but I couldn’t accept that because noise from the motorway is seriously impacting on people’s lives in large parts of my constituency.” “This work has been carefully agreed with the Highways Agency to build what is required maintenance of the carriageway
into the urgent need to address noise pollution. It is absolutely fantastic news for thousands of my constituents and, while we should not be tricked into thinking road surface is the sole cause of motorway noise, the lower noise surfacing material will significantly help.” You can find out much more about my work as your local MP, in Winchester and Chandler’s Ford, via www.stevebrine.com or on 01962 791110..

The Best Christmas Gadgets For Him Buying gadgets can be tricky: if you’re buying for a grownup there’s a very good chance that they’ve already bought the gadgets they want. But don’t despair, because it turns out that there are lots of gadgetrelated gifts you can buy for the man who has everything. A good place to start is with a case. You can spend hundreds if you want something from a name designer, but firms such as TuffLuv make really nice vintage leather Kindle cases for around £40. And of course you can get leather cases for other devices such as laptops and tablets too. If he hasn’t already got a tablet, there are plenty of alternatives to the all-conquering iPad and iPad Mini. Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD (£89) is good for ebooks and movies, and a range of affordable Windows 8 tablets have been launched by the likes of Asus, Acer and Toshiba, all below £200. If he fancies himself as the next Jamie Oliver, Belkin’s Chef Stand and Wand (£29) is a smart gift idea. It’s a tablet stand designed specifically for the kitchen, enabling him to see the recipe (or the tutorial videos if he’s using 12
cooking apps or YouTube) without getting it covered in food. If he’s more of an outdoor cooking type, iGrill’s range of smartphoneconnected thermometers (from around £34.99) give him a new toy to play with while he’s burning burgers. One of the more unusual new gadgets we’ve seen is the PlayBulb, a bluetooth speaker that’s also an LED light bulb. The £59 device is controlled via an iPhone and Android app that enables you play music and, er, turn the light on and off. For sporty types there are stacks of gadget gifts, such as the Fitbit Flex activity tracker (£75), the Zepp motion sensor for tennis players (£129), Garmin’s Forerunner GPS watches (£89) and the TomTom Multi-Sport GPS Watch (£149). If you really want to delight a gadget fan, this year’s hot technology is the smartwatch - of which LG’s G Watch R is one of the nicest. The price hadn’t been announced as we went to press but the Androidcompatible smartwatch is likely to be keenly priced -
not least because Apple has its own smartwatch, which is likely to be a big seller this Christmas. If he’s already shelled out for a smart watch, how about a drone? Parrot’s AR.Drone 2.0 (£224) is a smartphone-controlled quadricopter, a flying drone that can stream high definition video back to the owner’s phone or tablet. There are drones to suit all budgets, from the £36 Quadricopter X4 to drones costing more than £600. Many bigger drones are designed to carry GoPro cameras, which are small high definition cameras that can be attached to almost anything. Our current favourite video, a YouTube hit, was made by strapping a GoPro to a dog’s collar and then letting it sprint down to the beach for a swim, but we’ve seen GoPros strapped to bike helmets, to remote controlled cars and even to musical instruments. Expect to pay from around £199. You don’t have to spend lots of money for a great gadget gift, though. The excellent Aeropress coffee maker produces brews that rival the world’s most expensive coffee machines, and you can pick one up brand new - for around £25.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Chandlers Ford & Eastleigh areas and Justin is finding that his
approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve
done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

The Christmas Truce by Alison Runham
Christmas Eve 1914. The Western Front. Weeks of persistent rain have given way to a freeze, mud is turning to ice and Pope Benedict’s call for a Christmas ceasefire has fallen on deaf ears; fighting has continued throughout December. But today, in many places fighting has been sporadic and half-hearted. Staff Sergeant Clement Barker is huddled in his trench with his fellow Grenadier Guards. They’ve received a little Christmas cheer recently: letters and gifts from home, including cards from George V, sweets from Princess Mary, and plum puddings. Across No Man’s Land, the German troops whose celebrations traditionally focus on Christmas Eve rather than Christmas Day, are putting candles on tiny trees they’ve received from home. The sound of their carol singing drifts over the English trenches as they break into Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht (Silent Night). “The trenches were a blaze of Christmas trees,” one soldier recalled, “and our sentries were regaled for hours with traditional Christmas songs.” This is happening at other places too, and some English troops respond. “They finished their 18

carol and we thought that we ought to retaliate in some way, so we sang The First Noël... they all began clapping; and then they struck up another favourite of theirs, O Tannenbaum,” wrote another young soldier. Back in Sergeant Barker’s trench, the soldiers receive a surprise visit from a German soldier. “He said that if (we) did not fire, they wouldn’t in the morning.” When morning comes, after some cautious showing of heads trust is established. English solders venture into No Man’s Land to retrieve and bury their dead, and when no shots are fired, they begin laughing and talking. Soon the Germans join them, shaking hands and exchanging gifts, and then “a football is kicked out of our trenches, and Germans and English play football”, Barker wrote. Henry Williamson, who later wrote Tarka the Otter, is also at the Western Front on Christmas Eve, patrolling just 50 feet from enemy lines. In an interview for the BBC’s series The Great War, he too recalled football matches, but these were played behind German lines and he made no mention of British and German troops playing together. However, despite the myths surrounding
Truce football matches between the two sides, some are welldocumented in letters home. Two soldiers of the 6th Cheshires described a huge, free-forall match that took place in Wulverghem in Belgium, where No Man’s Land was less damaged by shell fire. Williamson also described how the truce started for him and his fellow soldiers: “we crept out, trying to avoid our boots ringing on the frozen ground, and expecting any moment to fall flat with the machine guns opening up. And nothing happened.” There, too, the Germans sang Silent Night before inviting the English troops closer. Williamson’s unit suspected a trap at first and were cautious, but were soon exchanging gifts. These are heart-warming moments for Barker and Williamson, but similar scenes are occurring at many points along the Front. Cigarettes, rations and uniform buttons are exchanged, some English ex-barbers give German troops a haircut and one English trench receives a German chocolate cake, together with a ceasefire request and an invitation to an impromptu concert. “Just think,” wrote one soldier to his family,
“while you were eating turkey I was talking and shaking hands with the very men I had been trying to kill a few hours before!” The truce at Williamson’s position held for four days. No Man’s Land was “grey and khaki... they were smoking and talking, shaking hands, exchanging names and addresses for after the war, to write to one another.” But then orders arrived for fraternisation to stop. The Germans, too, were told senior officers would be arriving, and sent a message across to the English: they would have to fire their machine guns, but would fire high to try and avoid hitting anyone. Barker and his men enjoyed peace for a little longer as well. “Night came and still no shots. Boxing day the same, and has remained so up to now,” he wrote a few days later.
Gradually, open fraternisation lessened and fighting resumed. Captain J C Dunn, Medical Officer in the Royal Welch Fusiliers, wrote a poignant account of how hostilities resumed at his position. “I fired three shots in the air and put up a flag with “Merry Christmas” on it, and I climbed on the parapet...[the Germans] put up a sheet with “Thank you” on it, and the German Captain appeared on the parapet. We both bowed and saluted... he fired two shots in the air, and the War was on again.”
So why do we find the 1914 Christmas Truce especially memorable and moving? Perhaps because in the midst of a war that cost over 10 million lives, it was, as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle said, “one human episode amid all the atrocities.”
Truces had happened before. During the Crimean War and the Peninsula War, troops from both sides sometimes socialised and shared rations around the same fire, and during the Boer War there were football games too.

Your Legal Options For Divorce Q: My husband and I have
decided to divorce. I’ve never worked or handled any of our finances, feel completely out of my depth and am scared I am going to end up losing out. What can I do?
information may be leaving you feeling vulnerable.
Would the family have benefited from pay rises in the near future?
Scandalous cases such as that of oil tycoon Michael Prest who despite being ordered to pay £270,000 a year to his ex-wife Yasmin, reportedly paid her just £150 a week because his money is being allegedly ‘hidden’ in offshore bank accounts, are very much the exception to the norm (that legal battle is said to have already cost £3 million in legal fees with accusations of Prest establishing a ‘cheat’s charter’ for divorcing husbands.)
The other crucial issue is the fact that you do not work. Did you give up a career to be a wife and/or mother? Have you qualifications, skills or experience in a particular area? If you do have children, depending on their age and the care needed, what time will you have to be able to go back to work? I once acted for the mother of a disabled child who needed full time specialist care at home, which inevitably precluded her from being able to go out to work.
Unless your husband is a multibillionaire businessman, you should have no such worries, but I can tell from your question that you are feeling anxious and alone, so you must find help in managing your situation.
Claire, Chandlers Ford You need a matrimonial solicitor acting for you for two very To start with, Claire, you need important reasons. The first is to to remember two things. The first establish finances. You don’t say how long you have been married, is that the main objective of the or whether you have any children, divorce process is for two people but these factors need to be taken to leave a marriage of reasonable into consideration when planning length as near as possible to for the continued wellbeing of all the lifestyle they had when they members of your family. were married. The second is
A:
that it is not your responsibility to discover your husband’s financial information – there are professionals, procedures and laws that will do all that for you. With a recent raft of cases being reported about wives being cheated out of their husband’s fortunes, I can see how outside
Your husband needs to give details of what he earns, spends on the household and any debts from mortgages, loans or credit cards that have been incurred over the course of the marriage. Attention will also be paid to your husband’s future prospects. Is he on a successful career ladder?
All these details need to be compiled, examined and presented, initially in mediation between you and your husband and potentially in court. It may seem intrusive, but all these matters are treated with the utmost confidentiality and need to be presented to anyone who has to make a decision about your future. You will most likely find that once your solicitor has asked all these questions, gathered information and explained your position, you will be able to see more clearly and hopefully gain some confidence from the understanding of your situation. In cases such as yours, investing in legal advice is the best way to ensure that you get the life you are entitled after the end of a marriage because once an order is made, there is no going back. light around and instantly make the room seem bigger. The larger the mirror, the thicker it needs to be, so it’s often a good idea to get professional help to attach it securely.
Polished plaster A centuries-old Italian technique, also known as Venetian plaster, involves applying several thin coats of plaster and polishing with wax. The finished result boasts a lovely depth of colour and can resemble marble, stone or suede.
Fabric Choose your fabric, line it, stretch it, and staple it to battens fixed to the walls. There’s no way around it: this traditional technique is expensive. It looks amazing, however, and is helpful in insulating against cold and noise.
Composites and laminates They may seem dull, but in fact sheets of plastic laminate or solid composite have decorative potential. As they are waterproof and require few joins, they make an especially good choice for bathrooms.
Leather Costly but eye-catching and incredibly luxurious, leatherclad walls possess enormous character, while their patina, like that of a quality shoe, will develop over time. Apparently, they are even sound- and fireretardant.
Cork Cork sheets and tiles offer many appealing qualities, from being warm and soft to the touch to having insulating and soundproofing benefits. What’s more, they are highly
environmentally-friendly. A range of modern colours, patterns and textures is available.
Sheet metal Fancy an unusual wall installation? Then opt for sheets of metal – steel, copper or aluminium, say. Finishes include different textures, laser-cut designs or even designer rust and, depending on their patina and arrangement, the end result could be either overtly industrial or sleek and upmarket. MOTORING
Top Five Sports Cars By James Baggott, editor of CarDealerMagazine.co.uk Most people spend all their lives dreaming of owning a sports car – but for a lucky few that dream can sometimes become a reality. After years spent gazing longingly at every Ferrari and Porsche that drives by, finally strolling into a dealership to shell out on one for yourself can be a life-changing event. But when you’ve spent years scrimping and saving to own one, when the time comes to choose which one to put your money down on, the decision can be rather tricky to make. Here we’ve tried to help by picking the top five you might want to consider. Ferrari 458 Italia Price: From £178,526 If it’s a Ferrari you’re after there really is only one you should be considering – and that’s this, the 458 Italia. Not only does it Lotus Exige S
36
Ferrari 458 Italia
have looks that can kill from 100 paces, but it has an incredible 4.5-litre 562bhp V8 engine, a top speed of 202mph and can hit 60mph in a brain-melting 3.2 seconds. There’s no wonder many consider this to be the motoring nirvana. Porsche 911 Price: From £73,509 Practicality isn’t generally high up on the agenda when buying a sports car, but with four seats in a Porsche 911 you might just be able to convince your better half that’s it’s the perfect family car. Ok, who are we kidding, that’s never going to happen, better then to focus on the fabulous flat-six engines and incredible handling. The 911 has been the definitive go-to sports car for generations and the latest “991” model is no different. Well worth a look. Jaguar F-Type Coupe Price: From £85,000 It took three decades for Jaguar to finally build a successor to its legendary E-Type – but the wait was worth it. The F-Type, which comes in soft-top and
coupe guises, is not only stunning, but brilliant to drive too. There are three versions available: V6, V6S and V8S. We’d opt for the latter which combines a glorious exhaust note with stonking performance from the 542bhp 5.0-litre V8. Lotus Exige S Price: From £54,235 Let’s forget luxury for a minute and just go for something a little bit bonkers and a lot of fun. The Lotus Exige S covers all that. It doesn’t have leather, in fact you’re lucky to get a radio, but this is not a performance car to be snubbed. It has a mid-engine 3.5-litre V6 engine that will propel the wildlooking machine to 60mph in just 3.8 seconds and is guaranteed to put a smile on anyone’s face. Just don’t expect to be comfortable. Toyota GT86 Price: From £25,110 Yes, we’ve lined up a Toyota against supercar glitterati, but before you scoff, hear us out. The GT86 may not have the kudos of a Ferrari, but if you’re looking for sports car thrills on a budget it’s worth considering. Starting at just £25,000 you get a huge amount of car for your money like the entertaining 2.0-litre Boxer D-4S engine, smart styling and seat-ofyour-pants driving thrills.

A Christmas Message from Churches Together in Chandler’s Ford ‘Being Human’ Christmas is undoubtedly a special time of year, but it is often quite a frantic time too. Our ‘To Do’ lists seem endless and the mountain of cards waiting to be signed grows year-on-year. We spend more, eat more, travel more, get stressed more … we even go to church more! I begin to suffer from Christmas fatigue about half way through November – and that’s just at the prospect of what looms. Each year we find ourselves asking the same question: is this what Christmas is really all about? To answer that question it’s important to recall the central event of the Christmas story. Forget the angels, and the shepherds, the gifts and the idyllic stable scene. Forget even the baby in the manger wrapped
tightly in pure white cloth on a bed of golden hay. The central event of Christmas is the gracious activity of God who chose to be revealed in the most direct and vulnerable way possible: as a fellow human being. As John’s gospel puts it, ‘the Word became flesh and lived among us’. The mega-story of Christmas is God’s choice to be human. To live our lives, experience our joy, feel our pain, understand the drag of temptation and yet inspire hope through compassionate living. The significance of Christmas doesn’t stop there; it is confirmed through how Jesus lived his life. This man Jesus taught that to be truly great one must first be the servant of all. That in the grand scheme of things the first will be last and the last first, that we
must love our neighbours and even our enemies as ourselves. It’s about being fully human, and how our attitudes can be wonderfully transformed when we learn to love and show compassion to others. Isn’t that what Christmas is really all about rather than the busyness, expense, stress, and excess we often get tangled in? Instead, by allowing the festive season to prompt an attitude of loving-kindness we can actually draw closer to God and one another as a result. Wishing you all a happy and peace-filled Christmas, Tim Written on behalf of Churches Together in Chandler’s Ford by the Rev Tim Searle, Minister at the United Reformed Church.
‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.’ John Chapter 1, verses 1-5 (NRSV) ‘For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.’ Isaiah Chapter 9, verse 6 (NIV)

GARDENING
I’m Dreaming of a Green Christmas by Pippa Greenwood With Christmas just around the corner, there is always plenty to do. True the garden side of things may be a little less busy than usual, but everything else seems to be going into overdrive.
I love giving presents, but only when I think that the recipient will really enjoy receiving it - whether that gift is a thing of beauty or something totally practical. With gardening as one of the nation’s top pastimes, I’m sure you’ll know more than a few gardeners so here are a few ideas for things which I am sure most green fingered friends would be delighted to receive. If you know a newish gardener or someone who has recently taken on a garden then the basic garden tools are always well received, especially if you choose good quality, sturdy ones. So think fork, spade and rake – yes, they are difficult to wrap but worth the effort. For anyone gripped by the Grow Your Own bug and who’d appreciate a helping hand you could give one of my ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood ‘ gift cards – they choose the veg they want to grow and I send them out, at the right time for planting and accompanied by weekly advice and tips emails….it couldn’t be simpler! Find out more at www. pippagreenwood.com Weeding is always an issue so a hoe is useful or for smaller spaces (such as in between plants, in gravel, between paving, in asparagus beds or to tackle weeds
54
within planters) try the hand held red-handled weeders – I think they’re indispensable. Small but always appreciated gifts could include a few packets of vegetable seeds. Although many garden centres are currently crammed full of tinselly, twinkly items for the festive season, most already have a good number of seeds in stock. Choose some particularly scrumptious varieties of vegetables or for those who are more concerned about looks than taste, how about some flamboyantly colourful flowers to brighten up their garden? If you want to spend a bit more and the person loves growing things from seed, a heated propagator makes a fantastic gift. With tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and many of the fancier ornamentals needing to be sown soon, it’ll be a gift put to use straight away. Gardening gloves too are something that any gardener can always have more of. Particularly useful are some of the gauntlet style gloves which are perfect if you have to tackle a pruning job on a thorny plant or one with really rough or sharp leaves. Totally practical, but gauntlets can make even a really unpleasant job so much easier – I even used mine to harvest holly for decorating the house last Christmas. Alternatively,
there are many lower-priced types of gloves available with gripping pads on the fingers or with leather toughened strips across the knuckles to make sure that your hands don’t get too much of a beating while you are out in the garden. Classic greens, ravishing reds or funky florals, gloves are definitely not boring. Many gardeners and nongardeners alike love having birds in the garden. They not only help to keep certain pest numbers down, but they also add an extra charm to the garden environment. How about a peanut feeder, nest box or perhaps even a bird table; there are many designs available from the modern to the rustic. For the husband, wife or partner who is less inclined to help with the tough jobs in the garden, give them a gentle nudge by gifting a brand new garden fork and spade; but if you feel that they really are
beyond help, then admit defeat and give them a garden lounger or perhaps even a hammock? As container gardening continues to rise in popularity, another idea is to give a few gorgeous looking containers - either empty for the friend or relative to decide what to put in it themselves, or make them into a complete gift by planting them up with a selection of plants and under planting them with bulbs which you know will bring extra delight next year.
any indoor plant from a garden centre during cold weather, it is essential that you protect it thoroughly on the journey from the garden centre to your car and from your car into your house as even a tiny exposure to cold drafts and low temperatures can cause a lot of damage…….oh, and happy Christmas from me too!
Finally, don’t forget the plants themselves. Garden centres are currently crammed full of a delightful array of plants, mainly with houseplants being perfect for providing bright colour indoors at this time of year – take a look at the poinsettias, cyclamen, indoor azaleas and jasmines to get an idea of just some of the plants that would be great to give as gifts and remember when you buy

Lizzie and Cokie are sadly victims of cruelty and neglect. They have been rescued and are now in care, where they are responding well to love and attention. They are around 11 years old. Both have very sweet placid characters and would so appreciate a happy future with owners who will give them the love and security they rightly deserve. Anyone who would have the patience for them considering their unhappy past and has a safe area with a garden for them when settled, please contact 02380 435855. There are a number of beautiful cats in foster care in need of their loving forever home.

HISTORY
What happened in... December 1966? Average price of a house was £3,840 Petrol cost about 5/- 3d a gallon
Walt Disney Snow White 1937 Trailer Screenshot
For billions of children worldwide, from the Twenties until…well, for happy ever after, Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a special piece of magic from Walt Disney. Born in December 1901, this entrepreneur, business magnate, cartoonist, animator, voice actor (a big thank you from Mickey Mouse), producer, director and screenwriter spent most of his life not just fulfilling his own dreams but creating dreams for countless generations to come. Part-way through producing The Jungle Book, on December 15 1966, Walt Disney died of lung cancer. According to rumour his body was cryogenically frozen pending a cure for the disease. Well, who wouldn’t want to believe that Walt Disney is in suspended animation? 1st: Following the declaration of independence from Britain, Rhodesia’s Prime Minister, Ian Smith, and Harold Wilson held talks aboard HMS Tiger, in the Mediterranean, with no positive outcome.
Three of the bestselling singles this year were: Green Green Grass Of Home, Tom Jones What Would I Be, Val Doonican Good Vibrations, The Beach Boys 60
8th: The USA and the USSR signed a treaty prohibiting nuclear weapons in outer space. 21st: Russia launched Luna 13, which made a soft landing on the moon three days later (Is another atmosphere, eg the moon’s, technically ‘outer space’? I just wondered).
23rd: The final episode of Ready Steady Go! was broadcast. This programme had been a regular feature of Friday evenings since August 1963 and the viewing figures peaked on 20 March 1964, when the Beatles were interviewed, before performing their then current hit Can’t Buy Me Love, as well as It Won’t Be Long and You Can’t Do That. The first screening of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, starring Clint Eastwood, took place in Italy. American audiences would have to wait another twelve months to see it and it didn’t premiere in London until ’68. This film was memorable as much for its evocative music as anything else. 24th: I bought my first three-piece suit, off-the-peg from Burton, for £14.10/-. It was a bit short in the arms but as long as I kept my hands in the pockets it didn’t show. 31st: I went swimming in the Thames at midnight. Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Fortunately I was rescued by a passing police launch and spent the first few hours of 1967 in A&E. My three-piece-suit was ruined. A very merry Christmas to both of my readers; and please buy my books from Amazon: Rainbows, Dreams and Angels is a double novella and Short Shorts is a collection of short stories and humorous articles.

And Another Thing... Christmas Shopping by Tom Hughes It was that time of year again, when the late autumnal chill turns to a sharper, wintery shiver. “Tom?” “Mmmm?” “What are you doing this Thursday? “I’m busy.” “Doing what.” “Er, I have to creosote the dog.” “Don’t be silly and stop hiding behind the paper. On Thursday we need to go … late night Christmas shopping.” “Listen, I hate Christmas, and I hate Christmas shopping. I’m like the condemned man shopping for rope. I’m a grown adult, I can make my own choices in life, so please find someone else, and that my dear, is my final, final word.” The Trafford Centre car park was heaving as we bumped the Mondeo up onto the pavement and joined the happy throngs. As soon as we entered, Sarah headed straight for the Christmas decorations. “Now Tom, do you think we need another Santa to stand in the corner of the front room?” I turned around and stared at the 70
rosy cheeks and glassy eyes of the little fat man with the white beard. I felt like punching him. But instead I just pulled at his realistic whiskers. “Er, do you mind?” “I’m most terribly sorry,” I immediately apologised as the chubby old chap backed away from me, his furious wife in tow. “Tom, what have I told you about not wearing your new glasses? Look, this is going to be a long night so let’s just get on with it.” “I’ll tell you what - let’s split up. You give me a list and we can finish in half the time.” Sarah’s eyes narrowed as she ripped her brown envelope in half. “Ok ... but don’t just go to Waterstones and browse for hours.” “As if.” The film section at Waterstones was bigger than I remembered, with huge glossy tomes full of scenes from my favourite films. One Spielberg book was as weighty as it was marvellous. But at forty quid I couldn’t justify the price. I looked over the book to see the whiskered old man whom I mistook for Santa
meekly shuffling along behind his wife. He looked over at me, our differences forgotten as I held up my list. A moment of male bonding amongst the manic dash for presents. Then, as I replaced the Spielberg book, he gave me a strange, conspiratorial wink. The next destination was the perfume counter in Debenhams. A scary looking woman with cartoon eyebrows blocked my path. “Paco Rabanne?” “No, Tom Hughes, but pleased to meet you.” I offered my hand. The sales lady tried to look annoyed, but her plastered face couldn’t quite manage it. “No sir, it’s a perfume ... pour l’homme.” The sensual pout took me aback - who was this raging fire of pure epicurean femininity? Fingering the exotic bottle of scent, I rummaged for my list Uncle Barry, aftershave. Perfect! “How much, madame? “£44.50 sir.” I was in Boots when Sarah rang. “Did you buy Barry’s aftershave?” “No.” “Why?”
“Because I haven’t time to remortgage the house. Have you seen the price of Paco Rabanne?” “The Hugo Boss is on offer.” “No chance.”
“Is that it?”
“Because he dressed the Nazis.” “Tom, I don’t think we have time to discuss the ethics of Christmas - just go and buy something, anything.” I trudged back to my Gallic friend and handed over thirty quid for a tiny silver bottle of what to me smelt of catnip. I met Sarah at a generic coffee emporium. Weighed down with bags, she flopped onto the bench as I brought her a restorative skinny latte. “You’ve been busy.” “Well, I just want to finish and go home. Where are your presents?”
“Right, make yourself useful. Carry these, time’s marching on, let’s go.” Now reduced to a mute pack mule, I followed Sarah dutifully around the stores, sulkily accepting bundle after bundle of sparkly loveliness. And, before I knew it, it was Christmas morning and time to open our presents. Sarah had told me what to buy her and when she
opened her box gave me a polite look of mock surprise. Then I opened my present - it was the Spielberg book.
“Well, I was distracted, the old man with the beard ....” Sarah, half standing, slurped her coffee.
“Why not?”
“Here.”
I held up my little aftershave bag.
“How did you know I wanted this?” “I just had a feeling.” The doorbell rang. It was Uncle Barry looking for his bottle of catnip. Everyone ran out to greet him. From the hall I heard a rousing “Merry Christmas!” Now alone, I glanced over at the corner of the room, where sat a chubby, red faced Santa. So Sarah had bought one after all? And do you know something? If I didn’t know better, and if I wasn’t on my third Bucks Fizz, I could have sworn he winked at me....

Have You Heard Of Thornden Hall? If you have heard of Thornden Hall, a 400 seat theatre in Chandler’s Ford, then you would be in the minority. For whilst Thornden Hall has recently celebrated its tenth birthday, and is now galloping through its eleventh year of concerts, choirs and conferences, it is still relatively unknown to the people of Chandler’s Ford. Add to these events the visiting theatre companies and in house musicals, and now live broadcasts from the National Theatre Live and the Royal Opera House, and it’s clear to see that Thornden Hall is busier than ever.
The Hall was originally built, under the direction of Head Teacher, Dr Robert Sykes, to provide a visually and acoustically stunning performance space that the school and community could use and share. Thornden Hall is now becoming a renowned theatre, enjoyed by arts groups around Hampshire and even utilised by the National Theatre Live and the Royal Opera House. To keep up with this thriving development, Thornden has recently upgraded its technical systems for the live broadcasts to optimise the viewing experience. 78
This little bubble of culture in the heart of Chandler’s Ford is expanding as the Hall, led by a small and devoted team, takes on new hirers, productions and theatrical experiences, all of which are open to the community that support Thornden Hall. And supporting the community is something that Thornden takes great pride in. It is home to Thornden Community Wind Band and Thornden Community Choir, holding weekly rehearsals and regular concerts throughout the year. Eastleigh Area Schools Orchestra and the Hampshire County Youth Orchestra (known as EASO and HCYO respectively) have also found their home at Thornden, as have Stagecoach Theatre Arts, a group for aspiring young performers who can dance, sing and act to their hearts’ content in the rehearsal rooms that surround the auditorium throughout the weekend. What better way to support the community, though, than to provide a stage for students to learn, create and perform as they take part in school productions throughout the year. With two plays and one large scale musical as part of the annual line up, as well as numerous concerts featuring the Thornden Wind Band and other musicallyinclined students, everyone at Thornden School is given the chance to
get involved - both on the stage and as part of the stage crew. But this only skims the surface! Groups from around the county continue to descend upon Thornden Hall and add to the cultural mix that creates a full and varied programme that appeals to all ages. This is enhanced by the new season of live events from the National Theatre and Royal Opera House. The season kicked off in September with NT Live’s murderous Medea and was followed by the Young Vic’s acclaimed adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire. Treat yourself and your paramour to L’elisir D’amore from the Royal Opera and take the family to Wonderland, courtesy of the Royal Ballet, with Alice’s Adventures this Christmas. So the next time someone asks you if you have heard of Thornden Hall you can say that, actually, yes, you have, and it’s definitely worth a visit very soon.

Never leaving our customers in the Cold In 1993 James Walker decided to walk away from his job as a service engineer because he realised that he could do a better, more reliable and economical job for people by working on his own. So he set up First Call Heating and 21 years later is still looking for ways to improve his company and help his customers when they realise that the dreaded boiler has given up the ghost. First Call Heating are now a local, well thought of, heating company operating from their showroom in Falkland Court, Chandlers Ford. They train and employ local engineers and only cover the SO and PO postal areas and are always ready to respond in that critical situation when the boiler fails and your home is starting to feel like Iceland. They have always been great at responding to customers needs when their boilers breakdown, being rated at 9.9 by customers on the Checkatrade website. With a competitive hourly rate and a good supply of local parts, boilers were never “cold “ for long, however with a service like this there is always a price to pay and with the average boiler repair being between £150-£ 250 its 16 94
sometimes difficult to find that sort of money straight away. With his years of experience and through listening to our customers engineer Ben Rood helped us devise the new plans with the perfect solution, 3 simple plans that are easy to understand and cover the cost of an average breakdown, no matter how any times a year it goes wrong and are now available on monthly direct debit. The top level of cover is “Total Care”, like the name suggests it totally covers all boiler, controls, hot water cylinder, radiators pipe work and everything associated with the heating system, all this for just £21.99 per month which includes a full annual boiler service. Some people only want to cover the boiler and controls, this is where “Boiler Care” steps in, like the name suggests it covers all the boiler components and associated controls, competitively
priced at just £15.99 per month again including a full annual boiler service. First Call Heating fit around 300 boilers a year all of which come with guarantees of up to 10 years, they have thought of this too and now offer “Heating Care” which tops up the boiler guarantee to include the radiators, valves and associated pipework etc, all for just £12.99 per month again including the annual full boiler service as required under the boilers guarantee. To find out more about the great boiler cover from First Call Heating visit firstcallheaing.co.uk or call today on 02380262690 and“ Relax they have it covered “
