Inspire Training will share strategies THAT WORK, and interventions they have employed to great effect in making REAL and life changing difference to relationships in caring for traumatised children.

Why Attend? • To get practical real life strategies to apply P.A.C.E and gain inspiration. • To be given the tools to solve complex relationship issues between carers and other professionals around the children we care for. • To improve the quality of family life, break negative cycles and sustain placement longevity. “We need real practical help!” Does this sound familiar?
ADVERTISER FEATURE
Real Life Therapeutic Parenting Foster Carers and adopters usually trudge in to our training, feeling worn out, drained and rather like they would prefer to be spending this precious free time relaxing instead! When they leave they are inspired, enthusiastic and say; 'It’s like the lights have gone on! I now believe I can really do this'! 'Everything now makes sense. I feel truly inspired'. 'I wish I had had this training years ago. It will make such a difference to me'. The reason? I adopted 5 siblings with attachment difficulties, 17 years ago. Once the children were all reunited and placed with me, traumatic issues from their birth family began to resurface more, and I found myself on a crash course about Attachment, Trauma and Therapeutic Re-parenting. With shame I remembered all the adoptive and foster families I had inadvertently patronised as a well-meaning Social Worker. Now I understood what it was like to live with children with Attachment Disorder! They taught me how to be a
therapeutic parent, and what attachment disorder meant. I then took all the strategies I had learned and opened my own fostering agency, Fostering Together Ltd. (Ofsted 'Outstanding 2013-2014). Within the agency, our Foster Carers became high level specialists in therapeutic parenting through our training. We knew that we needed to give more carers the tools they really needed to heal children, so I then started Inspire Training Group, and began delivering training to lots of fostering agencies and local authorities. As a Therapeutic Parent I learned the importance of routines and boundaries, never being vague, being 100% reliable, as well as the necessity to always be thinking outside the box and about the effects of the children's early missed nurture. I also learnt, and now teach all about how the children need a different kind of parenting. Take all the star charts and throw them away! It has been extremely tough to try to get all the children to where they need to be, and there have been many days where it
all seemed too much. I have learned about secondary trauma, or 'compassion fatigue'. This is when the carer literally 'runs out of care'. I now help foster carers and adopters to recognise this and give them strategies to overcome it. The most important thing was to break the 'cycle of abuse' and to help my children to form reciprocal relationships. I became a Granny three months ago and my daughter, aged 20 is an absolutely fantastic mum. My main motivation now, is to help as many foster carers and adopters as I can to achieve the same, or better, feel inspired to make a real difference and to become dedicated therapeutic foster carers and adopters themselves. Inspire Training Group are running a free workshop for foster carers, those who would like to foster, and adopters at Hilton Hotel, Chilworth, Southampton on 29th September 2014 10am – 2.30pm. To book on this free course call 03301 222062 and ask for Miranda or text ‘Fostering’ to 88802. Places are very limited. 3

Baking...or just cooking? I’m not much of a TV watcher as I rarely find anything that really grabs my attention. However I’ve recently found two programs that have me hooked. The first is The Great British Bake Off. I’m a newcomer to it having only caught the final three episodes of the previous series. But when the current series started, I was there, as were over 7 million other armchair critics. It’s clearly caught the country’s imagination, and one of our advertisers Cakecraft (page 85) who supply a wonderful range of baking tools, are seeing a significant upturn in the number of people coming through their doors, wanting to join in the fun. The second program couldn’t be more different: it’s Breaking Bad. This is no Cath Kidston, flowery (or floury) aprons set. Rather it’s shocking, nervewracking, at times harrowing and completely compelling. It’s a show which the expression ‘Binge TV’ is made for, although it’s quite definitely not family viewing. If you’ve seen Breaking Bad by the way, you could say that it does have something in common with The Great British Bake Off …they’re both about cooking. Hah! Student Success Congratulations to Barton Peveril Sixth Form College students on their excellent results announced in August (see page 23). My son goes there so I am a bit biased, but I think it’s an excellent college not only for their academic success and lovely campus, but also for their nurturing of the students’ personalities. As us ‘grown-ups’ know, good grades alone are not enough to make you excel in the real world. Barton has some open evenings for students in October, and also have a range of evening courses for adults about to start. As diverse as learning Japanese or Tap Dancing!

GARDENING
A Fresh Look at Conifers By Pippa Greenwood All year round colour in your garden
As the planting season is very much upon us, it is time to take a fresh look at conifers, they’re a lot more versatile and considerably more attractive than you may have realised, and a great way to add colour, texture and living sculpture to your garden 365 days of the year.
Yes, these evergreen plants have great garden potential so take a look at some of the great ways that conifers can be used in gardens, with several hundred different cultivars of conifer to choose from in the UK, there really is one to suit every situation!
Dwarf Conifers There are lots of conifers which really are dwarf, and reach a maximum height of 1m (3ft). These are obviously particularly useful for small gardens and backyards and will often add a great extra dimension to a rock garden or a small-scale border. They may need an occasional trimming, but generally hold their shape well. Recommended: Picea abies ‘Little Gem’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Gnome’ , Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Minima Aurea’, Cryptomeria japonica ‘Vilmoriniana’, Picea abies ‘Nidiformis’
Tall and Narrow Blessed with serious style many of the columnar or tall, slim conifers look especially stunning when used to create a screen, or to add height to a mixed border or a shrub 8
border. Being rather like a living sculpture they are also good grown as a single specimen tree in a lawn. Use these as a splendid evergreen focal point at the end of a path. Recommended: Taxus baccata ‘Fastigiata Aurea’, Juniperus scopulorum ‘Skyrocket’, Thuja plicata ‘Fastigiata’.
Pyramid-shaped Conifers With their relatively wide bases and narrow tops, pyramidal conifers can bring welcome shape, texture and evergreen colour to your garden and look lovely grown as a single, specimen tree in the lawn, and are often useful if carefully positioned to hide an eyesore. Recommended: Picea albertiana ‘Conica’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Yvonne’ or Thymus occidentalis ‘Yellow Ribbon’
Spherical Conifers With their prominently rounded shape these conifers naturally produce a sculptured look and are perfect for growing either side of a gateway or house entrance. They also look stunning in a mixed border, adding colour, texture and interest when many of the other border ingredients are below ground.
Recommended: Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Sunset’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Minima Glauca’, Thuja occidentalis ‘Danice’
to bring structure, texture and offseason colour, or a backdrop for the flowers of other plants in the container.
Ground-Cover Conifers
Recommended: Juniperus compressa ‘Compressa’, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Ellwood’s Gold’, Cryptomeria japonica ‘Sekkan-Sugi’ , Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Springtime’, Pinus leucodermis ‘Schmidtii’
Ground cover is great for hiding low-lying eyesores, such as manhole covers an evergreen groundcover hides them all year long. Low growing conifers also work well for covering steep slopes and edging paths and beds. They will help to keep weeds at bay and are extremely low maintenance.
Conifer Planting & Growing Tips Make the planting hole a minimum of 1m wide by 30cm deep and incorporate plenty of bulky organic matter such as garden compost, proprietary planting mix or well-rotted manure.
Recommended: Juniperus squamata ‘Blue Coat’, Juniperus conferata, Juniperus communis ‘Compressa’.
Conifers for Containers Conifers can look great either on their own (especially when planted with a few small bulbs around their roots, to add splashes of seasonal colour) or in a mixed planting where they help
Tease or spread out the roots well and backfill the hole with garden soil mixed with planting compost. Make sure that only the roots are below the soil surface, water in well.
Keep the soil moist at all times, especially during late spring and summer when drought is likely. Feed in April using a proprietary fertiliser to keep the growth good and ensure it is a good colour. Trim conifers regularly but remember if you cut back into old or brown growth you’ll run in to trouble as they don’t produce dormant buds and you’ll end up exposing all the old growth. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a great range of gardeningrelated items including stylish ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ Gift Cards, Handmade pottery herb planters, Pippa’s favourite weeding tool, signed books and lots of seriously useful garden items.

BEAUTY
Explained: The Science Behind Skin Care By Helen Taylor
How many times have you been completely baffled by some scientific sounding jargon when you’ve gone to buy a new anti-ageing cream? Unless you were top of the class in chemistry, you probably don’t know your AHAs from your Ceramides.
So that’s why we’ve compiled our guide to the most common ingredients you’ll come across today. Once you’ve read our skincare glossary you’ll not only understand the terminology, but you’ll be able to find the best cream for your skin’s needs as well. Antioxidants serve to protect skin from those damaging free radicals to which our skin is exposed on a day-to-day basis. Free radicals - or oxidants are unstable molecules which are caused by environmental factors like smoke, pollution and UV rays. Free radicals are responsible for causing those annoying visible signs of ageing like lines and wrinkles. Vitamin E, Vitamin C and green tea are some of the most common antioxidants. Vitamin E has great moisturising properties and makes skin soft and smooth, whereas Vitamin C
14
helps to diminish the look of brown age spots and hyper pigmentation, green tea is a strong antioxidant and a staple ingredient in most antiageing products. Hyaluronic acid, when applied topically, gives the skin a fresh, smooth look and helps it to maintain moisture - which is vital for youthful looking skin. It’s a naturally occurring carbohydrate in the body, but levels diminish with age, especially after you reach 40. Ceramides help in the fight for youthful looking skin thanks to their ability to prevent water loss and promote skin-cell renewal. They’re commonly used in moisturisers as they effectively re-hydrate dry skin. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are naturally occurring acids, commonly found in citrus fruits (citric acid), dairy products (lactic acid) and
sugar (glycolic acid). They work to aid the skin’s natural exfoliation process by loosening dead surface cells. When applied in the form of cream to your face, AHAs reduce fine lines and unclog pores. Glycolics work similarly to AHAs - they speed up the process the skin goes through to shed dead outer cells, which in turn reveals new, smoother skin cells Collagen is found naturally in the skin, the protein maintains the skin’s elasticity and keeps it looking plump. Over the years though, the body’s production of collagen drops dramatically. Used in many anti-ageing creams, collegan is found to be a very effective water-binding ingredient.
Retinoids are derived from Vitamin A. They have been found to help to renew the skin and stimulate collagen production, minimise the appearance of wrinkles and bolster the skin’s thickness and elasticity; which makes them a popular ingredient in antiageing creams. Growth factors are used to help to build collagen and diminish lines and wrinkles, whilst softening the skin. Their natural function in the body is to control cell growth in different areas. Soy isoflavones are a type of plant hormone thought to be useful in treating dark spots by blocking the pathway of melanin. They can aid in preventing collagen loss in

postmenopausal women as they have an effect on skin that is similar to oestrogen. Copper makes an appearance in some anti-ageing products as it is thought to promote the production of collagen and elastin - two of the most important factors in younger looking skin. Hydroquinone is useful in suppressing pigment producing enzymes in the skin, thus fighting age spots. It’s therefore, often recommended by experts to lighten those dark spots on the skin.

Problems on the M3 We have drawn the attention of the Highways Agency to problems on the M3 between junctions 12 and 14. Quiet Please: We have been campaigning for quiet tarmac on the M3 for a long time. The current level of road noise is one of the worst in the country and affects health and quality of life. (More info at www. quietplease.org.uk) Slower speeds might help: Could ‘flexible speed limits’ on the M3 help to keep traffic moving? Traffic moving at a slower speed instead of stop/ start at peak time works much better. It keeps traffic moving, helps reduce pollution and noise, and hopefully reduces accidents. This seems to us to be a good way of controlling traffic. U turns: Because of the congestion and speed, vehicles often do U-turns in Leigh Road (Junction 13), having mis-read the signage on the motorway. We have asked the Highways Agency to survey the signs on the M3 to see whether something can be done to avoid vehicles coming off and going back on at this busy junction. HISTORY
What happened in... October 1964? Average price of a house was £3,360 Petrol cost about 4/6d a gallon
At Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, on 15th October, Craig Breedlove, set a new land-speed record of over 520 mph. Just seconds later he set another (still unbroken) record for the world’s longest skid – nearly six miles! His parachute brakes failed and the car travelled another six miles before crashing into a lake at 200 mph. He managed to exit the car without even getting wet. Craig is currently working on a project to take a car powered by two jet engines to 1,000 mph (mach1.4), although the 77-year-old won’t be driving it himself. No, don’t all rush, he already has a driver. 1st: The first section of the high speed rail link between Tokyo and Osaka was opened. It had an operational speed of 170mph; ‘coasting’, as Craig Breedlove would probably call it.
Three of the bestselling singles this year were: (There’s) Always Something There To Remind Me - Sandie Shaw I’m Into Something Good - Herman’s Hermits Oh Pretty Woman - Roy Orbison 36
8th: Baby, I can drive my own car! Richard Starkey, better known as Ringo Starr, passed his driving test. 10th: Yoshinori Sakai carried the Olympic torch into the stadium in Tokyo to open the Summer Olympics. Yoshinori was born in the outskirts of Hiroshima on 6th August, 1945, the day the atomic bomb was dropped. This choice of runner was a symbol of Japan’s reconstruction and
commitment to world peace. 12th: The USSR launched Voskhod 1, the world’s first spacecraft to carry more than one person and the first not to take spacesuits and helmets (I know the feeling, I’m always forgetting stuff). The three-man crew landed the next day after sixteen orbits of Earth. 14th: At the age of 35 Martin Luther King Jr. became the youngest ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. 15th: The Labour Party, led by Harold Wilson, won the general election, ending thirteen years of Conservative Government. American composer/songwriter Cole Porter died aged 73. 16th: China successfully exploded its first atomic bomb. 29th: The Star of India, an almost flawless ‘double-sided’ star sapphire the size of a golf ball was part of a haul stolen from the American Museum of Natural History. The gang responsible were jailed and the gems were recovered – all except one. The Eagle Diamond is still missing. Short Shorts by Patrick D Cousins is a collection of short stories available as an e-book for £1.99. Rainbows, Dreams and Angels is a double novella from Amazon. You can hear the song on You Tube.

In August, Mrs Doreen Wellfare, a much respected member of our community sadly passed away. Mrs Wellfare represented the Borough’s Hiltingbury Ward for thirty eight years making her the Council’s longest serving lady member and was elected Mayor of Eastleigh in 1980. She was also awarded the Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Eastleigh in November 2008 in recognition of her service to the Borough Council as a past Mayor, and her other public service roles for the community. She was first elected to the Council in 1970 when it comprised the areas of Chandler’s Ford, Eastleigh and Bishopstoke. She took a leading interest in housing and one of residential homes in Eastleigh town centre is named after her. During her Mayoral year she raised what was then a record amount through her charity appeal to help fund the purchase of the Wessex Body Scanner. She also launched the borough’s first glass recycling bank and welcomed Eastleigh built locomotive 828 back to the town for its historic restoration. Mayor of Eastleigh Cllr Tony Noyce said “We are all deeply saddened by the news that Doreen has passed away. She was highly respected and a great servant to the residents of the Borough of Eastleigh. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this sad time.” 44

ADVERTISER FEATURE
Celebrating 15 Years in the Community What Jonathan Rees Estate Agents first opened their doors in their home town of Chandler’s Ford in 1999, they had just 11 properties let and managed. 15 years on, the business has certainly grown. Now ‘tried and tested’ by over 400 hundred landlords, they have approximately £100million worth of property under management Jonathan himself still heads up the agency which he started in 1978 (I know, surely not? He doesn’t look old enough!) making him probably the most experienced agent in Chandler’s Ford. Jonathan said: “I have always loved agency, whether its sales
or lettings. It is the personal contact with people which gives me the most satisfaction, always trying to make their lives better. His wife Rosemary works also in the business with him, acting as a ‘sounding board’ and reigning in some of his more ‘exotic’ ideas! Of course, with that level of business, extra help is needed. There is a dedicated team of staff now numbering 13 including ‘weekenders’, with a combined experience of over 150 years. Rosemary said: “To celebrate our 15 years in business and as we are a family firm, we entertained all the staff and their families at Marwell Hall for a day out in August. Everyone really enjoyed it, despite the best efforts of hurricane Bertha. It was a great way to say thank you to them all.” Jonathan Rees Property Services have
46
recently refurbished their offices at 100 Winchester Road. One of the improvements to make their client’s properties stand out from the crowd is ‘light box’ displays given interested prospective purchasers a much better view of the property before they even visit. The interior of the office has also been re-fitted to be more welcoming to visitors, with a reception area and on the first floor, a private office for both team and client meetings. “Working in a community and with local people means we are able to give back to that community and provide help for local charities such as Hampshire Air Ambulance, Age Concern and also to clubs such as Chandler’s Ford & Itchen Valley Rotary, who carryout invaluable work. We also sponsor the May Day Fryern Funtasia and for the first time this year the Hiltingbury Extravaganza on 14th September (see the centre pages)”, said Jonathan. “We are looking forward to the next 15 years as Chandler’s Fords letting and estate agent. Call in and see us or we will come to you, no matter what your property needs”

LIFE BEGINS
To Many Phish In The Sea... By Kate McLelland Looking at my inbox, it’s a wonder that I’m not in serious trouble with a lot of people. “HM Revenue and Customs” emailed me several months ago and asked me to go through my tax return - attached to the email - and reply immediately. I ignored them. Then I received two further emails, one about a tax rebate and one confessing to an “operational error” that meant I had overpaid my tax and was due a refund. I deleted them. It’s the same with my friends. They email me in crisis from various holiday locations in Fiji, Barcelona or Rio de Janeiro, but I turn my back on their desperate pleas for help: “We were mugged in an alley by a gang of thugs on our way back from shopping. All our money, phones and credit cards were stolen,
52
including our jewellery. We’re financially strapped and I’ll be grateful if I can get a loan of £1,750.” “International bank transactions take 7 working days to be effective and I can’t wait. I need you to help me with £2,550 to pay my hotel bills and get home.” All emails originate from my friends’ actual addresses and are signed with heartbreaking messages such as: “All hopes on you, Joanna” or “Our lives are in your hands, John.” After reading this, you’d be justified in imagining me as an unscrupulous multi-millionaire – careless of personal relationships and too rich to bother with a tax rebate. Let me put your mind at rest: all these emails have been sent by criminals trying to get my money or steal my identity (or both). It’s easy to laugh at the more extreme examples – for instance, when “the Chief Executive of Facebook” sends you an email that includes the immortal line: “You where picked by an Advanced automated random computer search from the Facebook in other to claim your £1,000,000.00 GBP”, or when a strangely-coloured bank logo
appears to have been pasted onto a standard email document by a five-year-old. The generic term for these attempts at online extortion is “phishing”, but if all fraudsters were that easy to detect, there would be very little internet fraud. Unfortunately many internet “phishers” are considerably more skillful in their approach. One recent scam uses a sign-in page that is identical to the one used by Google Drive to request your password. You’ll receive an innocent-looking email entitled “Documents” with a link that will take you to a page that is identical in every way to the one you use to access your Google Docs. Only the most eagle-eyed user would spot the fact that there are tell-tale typographical errors in the drop-down menu in the corner – a small mistake the fraudsters failed to pick up and the only one that suggests something is wrong with the page. We’re all so busy these days that it’s easy to assume the officiallooking communication that arrives in your inbox is the real thing, but there are a few rules you can follow to make sure that you don’t become a victim.
1. Never respond to emails requesting personal financial information. Reputable organisations don’t ask for passwords or account details in an email. Don’t be fooled by messages such as “Urgent – your account details may have been stolen” or “Your account has been frozen”. 2. Always visit a bank’s website by typing the bank’s URL into the address bar Phishers try to lure people to link to a fake site (“myonlinebank.co.uk” rather than the correct site “myonlinebank.com”) by asking them to click on a link in an email. It’s always safer to type in the bank’s address yourself. 3. Keep a regular check on your online accounts. Make sure you check your
statements frequently. If you spot any suspicious transactions, report them to the bank immediately. 4. Check that the website you are visiting is a secure one You can tell that you are dealing with a secure site if the start of the address “http://“ includes an “s” for “secure”, as in “https://“. You should also check whether a little lock icon appears on your browser’s status bar. These signs indicate that the site is using encryption to hide your data, but you should continue to exercise caution - just because a site uses encryption it doesn’t guarantee that it’s legitimate. 5. Be careful with emails and personal data Don’t give away PINS or passwords or any personal information. Don’t ever

write down your passwords or use the same password for multiple accounts. 6. Keep your computer secure by setting up a firewall and installing and updating antivirus protection software. Don’t be tempted to open suspicious-looking emails. 7. Report suspicious activity Crimestoppers has a site where you can learn about different types of fraud and find out how to report them: http://gameoffraud. crimestoppers-uk.org These are general guidelines but remember that just as technology continues to develop and improve, so will the skills of the phishers. That leaves you with one golden rule: if an online communication arouses even the slightest suspicion, don’t open it.

Your Legal Options For Divorce Q: I agreed to my ex-husband’s terms for our divorce last year to keep things amicable and straight-forward. My friends keep telling me the court order is really unfair on me. Can you help me have it changed?
Rachel, Southampton
A: No. Sorry Rachel, but however much I wish it weren’t, the answer really is ‘no’. Only in the most exceptional circumstances can legal professionals such as myself make the case for the terms of a divorce that has been agreed by the Court to be changed in retrospect. Unfortunately, yours is not an unusual case. Women regularly come to us asking similar questions to yours. Perhaps their former
husbands had the stronger personality, perhaps it was felt they had all the power from earning and controlling the money, but so many women reach agreements to get situations over with in the short-term, and then live to regret them. Of course it isn’t just men. Many women have been able to make demands on ex-husbands using access to and custody of children as a negotiating tactic if things got difficult or nasty, and men have agreed to conditions in their divorce they later wish they hadn’t. I would be foolish to ignore one of the main motivations of agreements such as these between couples is to avoid involving people such as myself, but I honestly don’t know why this is the case. The fact that people would rather trust those they wish to divorce than experienced professionals whose job it is to look out for their best interests, is a fact that causes me a great deal of both confusion and frustration. Our job is to ensure that the individuals in our care are treated fairly and walk away from a relationship as well looked after as possible. That’s it. That’s what we do. Now that Legal Aid is being withdrawn from all cases
other than those involving domestic violence and child custody, I am worried that more couples will seek to ‘save money’ by entering into agreements that later turn out to be one-sided and unfair to one of the parties. I can say that hiring legal representation is an investment in your future, I can say that we are here to protect people and guide them through the process, but I suppose people only really believe me when they are in a situation such as yours and by then, Rachel, it is too late. If agreements are made between a couple informally, then a solicitor can get involved to negotiate a change in terms and make them official, but once the Court has made its Order, that is it. Absolutely final. Game over. I am so sorry to hear of your situation, Rachel, but I am hoping that my responding to your question publicly might help others avoid suffering any injustice you might be. Yours is a very important example of how, without professional advice, the desire to keep things amicable between couples can lead to the possibility of one side being manipulated and taken advantage of. News from Chandlers Ford & Winchester MP Steve Brine This September I will be organising a second ASKtheNHS event, this time focused specifically on obstetric care and maternity services. It will be a chance to hear about potential changes at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in this key area and to ask senior clinicians the tough questions I know we all have. As a parent of two little ones myself, Susie and I certainly have many! The meeting will be 10-12 on Saturday 20th September in Winchester. Please check www. stevebrine.com/asktheseries for further details and how to register. The other thing I have done every Summer outside of election year itself is hold my Summer Tour.
This year it contained more dates than ever but the idea was the same; to get out and meet as many constituents as possible while Parliament is in recess and when the BBC like to tell you all MPs are on the beach! For 2014 I once again held a special ‘street surgery’ at the Fryern Arcade (pictured) with local councillors and it was a great success. Thank you so much to the many local residents who stopped to chat about a wide range of issues. Finally, readers in Hiltingbury will be pleased to know I am working with Cllr Judith Grajewski as well as Parish Council Chair, Margaret

Pick A Side Apple or Android? Is Apple where it’s at, or are Android gadgets better buys?
Apple is due to launch the latest, greatest iPhone this September along with iOS 8, the latest version of its smartphone and tablet software. The phone will have a bigger screen and a better camera, but one thing won’t change: like all Apple gadgets, it won’t be cheap.
Apple isn’t the only game in town, though. Google’s Android system has been updated too, and Android phones and tablets from the likes of Samsung, HTC, LG and Sony are often just as pretty and just as powerful as anything Apple makes - and in many cases they’re a good bit cheaper too. Android isn’t quite as simple or as elegant as Apple’s iOS, but there’s not much in it and where Apple only makes a handful of devices, with Android there are dozens of phones and tablets to choose from. Unless you’re a big Apple fan then, is Android the smarter choice? Unfortunately it’s a bit more complicated than that. Apple and Google don’t just want to be your friend when you buy a phone or a tablet. They want to be part of your entire life. They want to be the companies you from whom you buy your music, movies, TV programmes and books, the companies who provide your in-car entertainment and navigation systems, the companies who handle all your messages, voice and video calls, the companies who
62
connect all of the appliances in your home and who track your health and fitness. By the end of this year both firms will have smart watches or wristbands that monitor your vital signs, settop boxes that stream music and video to your TV, software that connects to cars from the likes of Volvo, Nissan, Audi and Mercedes, music and movie streaming services and home automation systems - and that’s just the stuff we know about. This means you need to consider the bigger picture. It’s not just about the particular phone or tablet you want to buy, but what techy types call the ecosystem: the various things that the phone or tablet connects to and gets content from. For example, if you fancy Apple’s clever Apple TV system, you won’t get the best from it unless you also have an Apple phone or tablet; if you want to
use an Android smart watch, it’ll work best with an Android phone; if you’re a fan of iTunes Match you can’t use it on Android, and so on. Consider what your friends, family and colleagues use. Apple’s iMessage offers free SMS and MMS messages (and soon, voice messages too), but only to other iMessage users - and iMessage isn’t available on Android. FaceTime offers free video calling, but it can’t call Android users (although Google’s alternative, Hangouts, does work on Apple devices. As a rule of thumb Google services work on Apple kit but not vice-versa. Increasingly, then, choosing a phone or tablet is more like picking a football team to support or voting for a political party: the available choices all do essentially the same thing, but they do it in very different ways - and your choice might colour your life for many years to come.

HOME & INTERIORS
On The Wall By Katherine Sorrell
What’s on your walls? Create character and add atmosphere with a finish that’s as simple or eye-catching as you wish, says interiors expert Katherine Sorrell
Choosing a wall finish is a question of combining personal choice and practicalities. Naturally, while some finishes are hands-off-don’t-touch delicate, others are ideal for protecting walls from knocks and bumps, muddy paws and sticky fingers; some are meant only for perfectly smooth walls, while others are great at disguising blemishes. Find the right type of finish, then decide how colourful, patterned and textured you want it to be. A plain white wall, for example, may be just the ticket for showing off your collection of snow globes or tin toys, or as a counterpoint to bright cushions, throws and other accessories. On the other hand, you may want an exciting wallpaper that draws the eye to a feature wall, or adds pzazz to an otherwise boring room. Suffice to say that a change of wallcovering can transform cold into cosy, boring into beautiful and out of date into instantly cool.
Preparing your walls 1. Your wall should be as smooth as possible, so cut away and replace any bulging, loose or crumbling plaster, strip off old wallpaper and fill any small cracks or holes. 2. Allow new plaster to dry. Before painting, prime it with watered-down emulsion. 3. If you plan to wallpaper over new plaster, coat it with sizing solution or watered-down wallpaper paste as well. 4. Hang lining paper horizontally (this is called cross-lining) to disguise any remaining blemishes before painting or wallpapering.
Ideas for feature walls • Peel-off stickers. Instant transformation. Available in all sorts of designs, small or large, from simple outlines to complex illustrations. • Wallpaper with a huge, graphic pattern and bold colours can be overwhelming for a whole room,
PAPERING KNOWHOW It’s best to decorate the ceiling and woodwork before you start papering. Make sure you buy enough paper to complete your project – there are plenty of online calculators that will help you, allowing for pattern repeats and wastage. Check that the batch numbers are the same on all the rolls, or you may come a cropper with slight colour variations. Use the paste recommended by the manufacturer. As a general rule of thumb, the heavier the paper, the easier it will be to hang and the longer it should last. 66
but is a great focal point on just one wall. • Paint effects are right on-trend. Try modern styles such as broad horizontal stripes or a dip dye effect. • Maps (old or new) are goodlooking and educational. Simply paste straight on to the wall. Try sheet music, wrapping paper and pictures enlarged on a photocopier, too. • Digital images can be enlarged as much as you like. Why not use one to cover an entire wall? • Wallpaper samples, vintage or modern, can be pasted up as a colourful collage. On the same theme, why not employ different colourways of the same pattern for an impressive and unusual effect?
Conventional, machine-printed designs are easiest to get hold of, usually inexpensive and simple to put up. But there is a whole world of wallpaper choice out there, from natural woven fibres and light-reflecting metallic papers to interactive papers that you can colour in or add stickers to, hand-blocked papers, threedimensional designs incorporating crystals, sequins or tiny LED lights, digitally printed papers made to your own design and even magnetic wallpapers that work as a noticeboard.
A world of wallpaper
Vinyls are durable and easy to put up, often coming pre-pasted. They can be used anywhere, but are especially suitable for kitchens and bathrooms. Some
Wallpaper is oh-so-hot right now, and it’s a brilliant way to add interest to any room, be it ever so subtle or dramatically different.
Types of wallpaper Standard decorative wallpapers are ideal for areas that don’t suffer from moisture or severe wear and tear.

are textured. Washable wallpapers have a transparent coating to make them wipeable. Embossed wallpapers feature a raised, textured pattern and are meant to be painted. Blown vinyls are similar. Flock wallpapers feature a velvety texture in stencil-like designs. Foils are metallic wallcoverings. They vary from a gentle sheen to almost mirror-like. Natural wallcoverings include grass, silk, wood veneer, hessian and cork. However, they can be delicate and difficult to clean. Recycle it! You’ve decided to have a clearout, and find yourself left with piles of ‘stuff’ without a home. How do you move it out of your home, and onto somewhere more useful? 1. Charity shops The Hospice Shop in Chandlers Ford takes both electrical items and furniture and will even collect larger items of furniture. Help the Aged in the Fryern Arcade, and the Marie Curie Cancer shop near the library both accept general bric-a-brac. 2. Gumtree/Friday Ads Both Gumtree and Friday Ads allow you to list for free, even with pictures. You can look on Google images for the item and use that as the picture rather than trying to take one yourself. 3. Dress Agencies For ladies clothing that you feel is still worth something, consider using a dress agency. My favourite is Labels in Bishop’s Waltham, but prebook if you want take clothes in. www.labelsdressagency.co.uk. 4. Freecycle Do a Google search on Freecycle Eastleigh. It couldn’t be easier, you don’t even need to put a picture, just a brief text description of what you are willing to give away and you’ll receive emails from people willing to come and collect your unwanted goods. 5. Recycling Banks Too many to list here, but often near supermarkets most of which will take glass bottles/jars and clothes/textiles. 6. Recycling Centre Eastleigh’s Household Waste Recycling Centre on Woodside Avenue is open from 8am to 7pm until 30th September, and from 1st Octber, 8am to 4pm, 7 days a week. In addition to the materials taken by the Recycling Banks, the ‘tip’ will also take wood, electrical, paint, garden waste and soil and rubble. For a full list www.tiny.cc/thetip. 68

HOBBIES
The Buzz of Helping Our Natural Environment by Jacob Thorson The buzzing of a honeybee is a familiar, timeless sound that we immediately associate with summer, and it’s fascinating to watch bees at work, gathering nectar that will eventually be turned into honey. As they as they bob in and out of the flowers in our fields and gardens, they pollinate 80% of the plant species in Europe, including most fruits and vegetables. The sound of the honeybee may be timeless, but sadly 20 bee species are already extinct and time may be running out for some of the remaining 267 species in the UK. This is because changes in farming practices over the years have led to the disappearance of many wild flowers from their natural habitat. In the summer a group of charities came together to launch the Great British Bee Count. As part of this initiative the charities produced a mobile phone app and asked 70
For the hive it is all about location, location, locations!
the public to record bee sightings. Participants were asked to identify the species of bee and record its habitat so the information could be analysed by the National Biodiversity Network. It’s worrying in the extreme to think that these remarkable insects may one day disappear altogether from the landscape, and that perhaps explains why beekeeping has recently enjoyed something of a revival. While the UK has its share of commercial bee farms, most beekeepers are dedicated amateurs who maintain their hobby out of concern for the environment and a deep fascination with the life of the hive. There are three main types of bee – bumblebees, honey bees and solitary bees, but it is the honey bee that beekeepers commonly look after in an ‘apiary’ (the name for a place where bees are kept). There are several different strains of honey bee, some of which are more docile – and therefore easier to manage – than others. If you are thinking of starting up as a beekeeper the first consideration should be the location of the hive. Do you have a garden or piece of land nearby where you can easily feed and maintain your bees? Can you place it in a location away
from wind and in full or partial sun? Is the presence of the hive likely to disturb your neighbours? Even if the bees pose no direct harm to others, you should bear in mind that their presence may still cause anxiety to people living nearby. Beekeeping is a form of livestock management and looking after an apiary can at times be demanding and heavy work. It’s advisable to consider taking a recognised course such as those offered by the British Beekeepers’ Association (http://www.bbka.org. uk). The Association has branches all over the country, offering introductory sessions designed to tell you everything you need to know about setting up an apiary. In many areas where the course is run you will be given the opportunity to have direct contact with bees, so you can decide whether beekeeping is really for you before you invest in the bees and equipment you need. A hive is a miracle of organisation, where bees take on different roles to support their community. Worker bees forage for food, build the honey comb, feed the larvae, keep the nest clean and defend it from predators, while queen bees mate with drones, producing up to 1,000 eggs per day to form new colonies. The drone’s role is to
mate with queens from different hives but unfortunately the drone dies after mating. It’s important to feel confident about handling bees before you proceed to set up an apiary, as the initial costs can be quite high. Essential purchases are a hive (there are various types and designs of hive, including the ‘Heritage’ model for people who want to integrate their hives into a traditional garden layout) together with various components and accessories, including a veiled Bee Suit with special hygienic gloves - to protect both you and the bees - a hive tool to help you move the frames and a ‘smoker’ to calm the bees when they become disturbed. You’ll need to start out with a five or six frame nucleus (referred to as a ‘nuc’ by beekeepers) and gradually expand your colony as you become more experienced.
You should always purchase bees from a reputable bee breeder: it’s better to buy queens that have been bred within the UK as imported queens may carry diseases. Ask around for recommendations but if you can’t contact a local beekeeper then you can look up sellers in specialist magazines such as Beecraft (a 12 month subscription costs £16 for online or £27 delivered). If you join your local beekeeping association you may be able to buy your bees locally
from a fellow keeper. What you choose to do with the honey from your hive is, of course, up to you. One hive can produce up to 60lb (27kg) in a good season, however an average hive will offer a surplus of around 25lb (11kg). There are other products – such as beeswax and royal jelly – that can also be sold, which goes to show that beekeeping is not only a great hobby: it can be a great business, too!
SWEET ON HONEY 27 Sep (1:30 to 5pm) & 28 Sept (10:30am to 4pm) Sir Harold Hillier Gardens, Romsey The best that Hampshire Beekeeping Association has to offer at their annual honey show. Screening at St Francis Ovarian cancer can occur at any age but the typical symptoms are often vague. These include bloating and abdominal discomfort, which can occur in healthy women, or with less serious conditions. Early stage ovarian cancer (stage 1) has an extremely good outlook. It can often be successfully treated and result in a 90% cure rate. By using a combination of ultrasound and blood testing it is possible to detect up to 80% of ovarian cancers. Medcare Plan Ltd is offering an opportunity to attend screening for ovarian cancer, which is not routinely available on the NHS. The screening cost is £175 and dedicated screening clinics begin in September on Saturday mornings at St Francis Surgery, Chandlers Ford. Both you and your GP will be informed of the results. If the test shows any abnormality, your GP can arrange further investigation or a consultant can arranged, at your expense, within 5 working days with a private gynaecologist who specialises in this field. And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes
I have a blended family. I don’t mean one night I went mad, chopped them all to bits with an axe then heaved their dismembered corpses into a giant Moulinex. What I actually mean is Sarah and I have four kids between us. And no, it’s not Piccadilly Circus in our house, it’s Grand Central Station. “Dad, I’m just going out.” “But Rob, you’ve just come in.” “Yes I know, I’ve come in to say I’m going out. Bye.” (slam). “Dad, will you take me to the cinema?” “Emma, what are we going to see?” “I’m going to watch The Hunger Games.” “Half way through the movie, will I feel like a Lyons hot dog?”
Eyebrows up, chin down, “So… that’s a no?”
Don’t think door banging is confined to the entrance to our castle; all the internal doors take a hammering. I am an expert in counting down the slams.
Amateur. And so another week begins - football, gymnastics, swimming, cinema, proms, cheerleading, sleepovers, horseriding.
“Dad! That’s so unfair! Right! Fine.”
Have you ever tried to organise a parent’s lift rota on Facebook? It’d be easier to start a protest flash mob outside a G8 summit.
“Three, two, one …(slam!) Ooh, right on the money.” Sarah was impressed. “You’ve got that down to a tee.” “Here, do you want a go?” “OK”
“A what? Dad you’re not coming, you’re just giving us a lift.”
Right on cue, Evan popped his head round.
I get ready to take Emma to the cinema in my trusty Mondeo Ghia (half leather trim, heated seats). Now, do I have everything? Keys, coat, shoes, glasses….ready. Beep! Beep! Hang on, who is that outside sounding their horn?
“Dad, can I have a lift on Friday?”
“It’s OK, Rebecca’s Mum’s here, she’s taking us now, mix up, bye!” (slam). 74
I sit back down in my coat. Ollie (the dog) sees that I am now wearing my anorak and trots off to retrieve his lead. He drops it at my feet and gives me his, “Well, come on!” look. We make it to the front porch just as the heavens open. “I’m taking Ollie out, bye!” (slam).
“No problem, where to, your girlfriend’s? The cinema?” “Glasgow.” “Glasgow?” “I’ve got tickets to see The Sausage Knotters.” “Glasgow?”
“I’m not entirely sure the Mondeo is up to it.” “Fine!” Sarah delayed her countdown just a touch too long - “Three…..two (slam), oh damn!”
No one tells me who is picking up who. Emma was in the back seat ready to go to Duke of Edinburgh (It was a meeting about his Award, he hadn’t called round to see if she was playing out) and I was just about to set off when a Chelsea tractor with blacked out windows skidded to a halt on the pavement in front of us. A strange creature with Gucci bug eyes and a mouth like a salmon was at the wheel. I shrugged. The creature shrugged back. Emma looked at me and shrugged. We all shrugged. Then the creature sped off, beeping her horn and pouting rude words
at me. “Who was that?” “Rebecca’s Mum, I think she was supposed to take.” “Well nobody told me.” Then, a miracle, a gift from the gods. Rob passed his test. We were so proud, his Mother was overjoyed. A whole new world opened up. Lifts to the pub, lifts to the game, lifts to the pub; my life was coming back to say hello! Delirious, I rang my insurance company. “Good morning, I’d like to add an additional driver to my policy.” “Additional driver’s age?”
“That will be an additional premium of one hundred and thirty pounds.” “Really? That’s very reasonable.” Long summer nights at our local watching other couples throw car keys at each other filtered into my mind. “Yes, that additional premium takes you to your renewal date which is next Saturday.” “Ok, and how much is it for the year? “One moment please…five thousand eight hundred and fifty nine pounds, and thirty one pence.” “You what?! Five thousand – “
“Seventeen.” “Two hours.”
“..Eight hundred and fifty nine pounds thirty one pence. With a nine hundred pounds excess.”
“One moment please”. A pause while the computer flicked over into improbability mode.
“But….the car is only worth eight hundred quid. So, what am I actually paying for?”
“How long licence held?”
“…Peace of mind?” It was my birthday last week. I came home and everyone was in the front room grinning. I sat down, Rob pushed Olly off my lap and handed me my present. A pair of driver’s gloves and some furry dice. Everyone fell about. A car horn blared outside. “That’s not that Rebecca’s scary Mum again is it?” “No. Come on Dad, we’re taking you to dinner.” Outside, a minibus. We all piled in. What’s this - free food and a lift home? Priceless. You see, it doesn’t take much…. Follow Tom’s family life at groomsdaybook.com

MOTORING
Mitsubishi PHEV By James Baggott, editor of CarDealerMagazine.co.uk It’s not very often a car comes along with the promise of ‘changing the game’ – but that’s exactly what Mitsubishi believes its new plug-in hybrid Outlander will do. We took it for a spin on and off road to see if we can believe the hype. What is it? It’s an SUV with a seriously clever powertrain that combines a 2.0-litre petrol unit with battery technology. On pure electric the car can travel up to 32 miles, even at motorway speeds, and when the batteries are depleted an engine takes over to keep you motoring. All that clever technology has huge benefits too such as no road tax, Congestion Charge exemption, and just 5% BIK for company car drivers. But that’s not all – you get all this with NO price premium over the equivalent diesel model. That’s an industry first and to put it into perspective, Volvo’s plug-in hybrid V60 commands an £11,000 premium over the diesel. What’s under the bonnet? It’s not what’s under the bonnet that matters but what’s hidden in the floor; a wedge of batteries. As the plug-in name suggests you can top these up every night, for around £1, from a normal three-pin plug. If you do no more than 30-odd miles a day, and top the car up every night, you’ll never use the fuel in the tank. On those occasions when a longer trip needs to be made, you can use the electric range and then rely on the petrol unit to power the wheels, 78
Combines a 2.0 litre petrol unit with battery technology
which in itself will do 48mpg. The switch between the two units is seamless. Officially the combined economy is 148mpg, but this will vary depending on where you use it and how often you charge the batteries. What’s the spec like? The bottom of the range model gets 18-inch alloys, cruise control, air-con, leather steering wheel, reversing camera, Bluetooth and a lot more. On higher spec models there’s a mobile phone App (Apple and Windows) that lets you change the heating settings, view current range and even operate the headlights and horn remotely. Also, it’s worth remembering this is a proper off-roader with 190mm ground clearance, four-wheel drive and Mitsubishi’s renowned reliability. Any rivals? Not really. This is the first true plug-in hybrid SUV. The closest thing to a rival comes from Volvo, in the shape of its S60 plug-in hybrid – but remember that costs nearly £50,000, and commands a £11,280 premium over the equivalent diesel. The Outlander PHEV starts at a ridiculous £28,249. What’s it like to drive? In EV mode it’s near silent and although the petrol unit is a little revvy when it kicks in, it’s not nasty. It’ll hit 60mph in 11 seconds, which is quicker than the diesel, and reaches a top speed of 106mph. It’s all very refined though and wind and road noise is kept to a minimum. There are
lots of clever tricks up the PHEVF’s sleeve too – like the ability to hold a charge and use the petrol engine instead at the touch of a button, and the ability to recharge back to 80 per cent when left on tick over for just half an hour. Our only complaint would be a rather hard ride. The AOL Cars Verdict The biggest winners are company car drivers who effectively get a £10,000 pay rise a year if they’re higher rate tax payers, plus free fuel. Business owners are winners too as they can write down the full cost of the car in the first year. If you’re a normal car driver then the benefits of EV motoring, no road tax and Congestion Charge exemption will be equally attractive. And remember this is all wrapped up in a comfortable, highriding, go-anywhere off-roader. Our guess is Mitsubishi won’t be able to make them fast enough…

RECIPE
Dutch Apple Pie The buttery pastry for this deep dish pie is made with a mix of selfraising and plain flours which gives it a soft and cake-like texture. If you prefer a crisper pastry use all plain flour. Choose crisp sweet dessert apples such as Cox’s Orange Pippins or Discovery.
Ingredients:
Now get started...
• • • •
1. To make the pastry, sift the plain and self- raising flours into a large bowl and add the diced butter. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour to make fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and beaten eggs and mix to a soft dough. Knead very lightly until smooth then wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 1 hour.
• • • • • • • •
200g plain flour 150g self raising flour 175 g unsalted butter, diced 150g caster sugar plus 1 tbsp for sprinkling 2 medium eggs, beaten 400g dessert apples, peeled, cored and sliced 75g raisins 75g light soft brown sugar 1 tbsp corn flour 1 tsp ground cinnamon 2 tbsp milk Whipped cream, to serve
TIP Replace the apples with sliced pears or a mixture of summer berries such as blackberries, raspberries and blueberries.
Serves 8 84
2. Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan/gas 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to pre-heat. 3. Roll out two-thirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line the base of a 23 cm round loose-based fluted flan tin. 4. Toss the apple slices in a bowl with the raisins, brown sugar, cornflour and cinnamon then layer in the pastry case, pressing down gently. Roll out the remaining pastry and cut into strips. Arrange in a lattice pattern over the apples. Dab the edges of the strips with a little water and press firmly to seal. 5. Brush the top of the pie with milk and sprinkle over caster sugar. Place the flan case on the preheated baking sheet and bake for 35-40 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold with whipped cream.
