It should be the first week of September when you receive your magazine this time round. Schools and colleges are heading back, and summer holiday memories are fading as quickly as your tan, no doubt. Tania Houston
Melanie (my business partner) and I had great plans to have a nice leisurely summer. However it was not to be! A too-good-to-ignore business opportunity unexpectedly came up just before I went abroad on the 6th July, meaning that I did have to do some emailing and phone calls (and poor Melanie had a ton of extra stuff to do as well as ‘holding the fort’). However the result is that we have just launched two additional magazines covering Locks Heath and Fareham, bringing the total to 10 editions. You might imagine that DO YOU USE A SMART PHONE? behind the scenes, Discover Magazines is a big office To save our contact details direct to your smart phone, use with staff, cars and shiny I-nigma QR code reader APP computers. But far from it, all and scan for instant download. of us in the team work from home, some local, some not. With the wonders of technology we have been able to set up systems that wouldn’t be any better even if we were in the same room. What I’m saying is that if you are thinking of starting a business – and more people do in September and January than any other time - renting an office or taking on the commitment of staff isn’t always essential. If I could offer two tips to start out with they would be firstly, use one of our advertisers to set up your technology (look under Computer Services in the index); and secondly go to peopleperhour.com to find freelancers (or to become one yourself).
Tania PS: Of course if you do start your own business, there’s no better place to advertise that than here! Romsey Chandlers Ford Southampton Southampton West Winchester Southampton East Hedge End Meon Valley

A SHORT STORY
The Cream Jug Story by Jackie Brewster
Cheryl said,
him in spite of herself.
“You know what I’d like to try? Potholing.” You could have knocked Ken down with a feather. He said,
Ken thought they’d finally come to blows when Frank insisted she wear a safety helmet. It was all very well for him but Ken knew how long Cheryl spent on her hair every morning. She gave that mop more attention than she gave him. Reluctantly, she clipped the thing on muttering about health and safety gone mad. Ken didn’t dare let her see him laughing.
“Where’s this idea come from?” She explained that Donna tried it recently and had been raving about it ever since. Cheryl never liked to be outdone by Donna. That’s sisters for you. Ken joked, “Aren’t you worried about breaking a nail?” And she said tartly, “Sometimes, Ken, you’ve just got to get a bit dirty.” He was surprised and said, “Fine, you arrange it.” So he left it with her. They turned up on the day at a car park on the edge of Bower Crags and met the instructor, a nice lad called Frank. There was also a couple from Kidderminster and an older chap who never spoke. Frank took one look at Cheryl’s peep toe mules, and said, ‘You’ll need to change your footwear.” He offered her some battered Wellington boots, which she pulled on most begrudgingly. Then Frank handed them all a set of waterproof overalls. Cheryl turned very sulky. Ken tried cheering her up by pointing out that her linen slacks were dry clean only, and it was better to be safe than sorry. She had to agree with 8
They assembled at the mouth of the cave and Frank gave an introductory talk on potholing. Ken wished Cheryl could have paid more attention but she was texting Donna. She insisted she could text and listen at the same time. ‘Who’s she trying to kid?’ Ken thought, ‘Cheryl can’t listen even when she’s not doing anything at all’. Finally Frank said, “Right we’re ready to go in.” Cheryl looked up from her phone and asked, “Is that where we’re getting the clay from?” He looked surprised and said, “Yes, there’s lots of slippery clay in these caves, so go steady now.” Cheryl nudged Ken gleefully saying,
One by one, crocodile-style, they entered the mouth of the cave. Cheryl did Ken proud. She squeezed through every tight passageway, crawled on her hands and knees, and even dragged herself along on her stomach, getting absolutely filthy with not a peep of complaint. Though Ken was right at the back and couldn’t hear a word anyone was saying anyway. But Cheryl did it, and that’s the main thing. “You’re a star Cheryl!” Ken said, as they emerged, squelching, into the daylight. Yet Cheryl seemed bewildered. “When do we get started on the potter’s wheel?” She frowned, looking around. “Why would we need one of them dear?” Ken asked gently, concerned the darkness had affected her mind. “I thought we were going potholing,” she snapped. “That’s right, and we did,” he said. “Potholing, caving, spelunking – call it what you like.” Her mouth dropped open,
“Donna never got her clay from a cave.”
“I’ve only gone and mistaken potholing for pottery making,” she said, turning pale. “All I wanted was to make a cream jug like the one Donna made.”
Ken had no idea what she was on about, but was pleased that they were finally one up on Donna.
“You could still make a jug,” Ken replied. “After all, you’re wearing enough clay.”

Neutering Cats Did you know there are an estimated 2 million stray cats in the UK? Females can be become pregnant again soon after giving birth (before weaning), so without intervention the UK cat population would soon be out of control. Neutering both male and females cats is so important, not just for the purpose of birth control, but also for a multitude of health benefits and prevention of unwanted behaviour like spraying and fighting. Cats can reproduce from as young as 4 months of age, hence we advise that cats are neutered between 4-6 months of age, depending on circumstances. Here at Cats at Seadown neutering costs as little as £47.34 for a male and £65 for a female (conducted under general anaesthesia) including routine postOP checks Certain Charities, such as Cats Protection League, offer financial assistance to help with the costs of neutering.

PROFESSIONAL SERVICES
Finance Save Money Now Winter might seem like some time away but you can save money by preparing for it now. Some services and products have lower prices while the weather is warmer and there are still offers on insulation and boilers so start work now before winter arrives and the prices go up. Switch your bills now It’s a great time to switch to a cheaper provider as the major providers typically start to increase their prices any day now, just in time for winter. Find a copy of your last gas and electricity bills, go to the energyswitching page on Moneymagpie. com and find a cheaper deal for yourself. It’s often worth considering one of the smaller suppliers to obtain a better price. You could save up to £60 a year by moving to a smaller supplier. Sainsbury’s Energy, First Utility, Ovo Energy and The CoOperative Energy all trumped the major suppliers for cheaper tariffs in early 2013.
12
Make hay while the sun shines
If you want to stick to one of the major suppliers you may be eligible for discounted bills through the government’s ECO (Energy Company Obligation) scheme. The ECO scheme offers heating and insulation improvements for low-income and means tested households. You’re eligible for the scheme if you receive certain benefits; see www.gov.uk/energycompany-obligation for the full list. You can apply through the Energy Saving Trust on 0300 123 1234. Once you have switched to the best-priced deal, the next step is to make sure your home retains heat with the efficiency of an oldtime dragon. Boilers If your boiler is coming to the end of its life, now is a good time to have it replaced. Most boilers over 15 years old can be repaired to keep them working, but they will be less efficient than modern ones. Even factoring in the cost
of a new boiler you could save money by replacing it now. Also, you could receive up to £270 cashback for updating your boiler through the new government energy improvement scheme, The Green Deal Cashback Scheme. The scheme will give you money back if you make energy efficiency improvements in your home such as installing a new boiler, having loft or cavity wall insulation done, improving heating, draught proofing, double glazing and installing renewable energy such as solar panels. The Green Deal is available to households in England and Wales and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. You can apply even if you are renting privately or in social housing providing the landlord can pay for installations costs. Firstly, have a Green Deal assessment carried out on your property which will provide you with a report of what could be improved. Then agree to a quote or Green Deal plan with a Green Deal Provider. You can find them online
through www.greendealorb.co.uk/ consumersearch. Once you have agreed the quote, apply for the Green Deal Cashback Voucher at www. gdcashback.decc.gov.uk. Make sure you have the work completed before the voucher expires and you’ll receive your cashback within 30 days. Insulation Now is a great time to get upto-date insulation as it’s a quiet period for installers. Insulation materials are also much cheaper to buy in the summer and early autumn when the demand is low, so it’s worth checking out B&Q or Homebase. Efficient insulation can cut the cost of heating and cooling by 40%, while loft insulations save an average 20% on your energy bills annually. Don’t forget you can also find loft
insulation vouchers on websites like Groupon as well as applying for the Green Deal. Draught-proofing Draught-proofing is one of the cheapest and most efficient ways to save energy in your home. The Energy Saving Trust claims you can save £55 a year. You could save more money by taking the DIY route; materials should set you back around £100 while a professional might cost double this. Some older properties with single glazing will be more difficult to draughtproof however and if you are not comfortable with your DIY skills, hiring a professional could save you money in the long run. Check with your home insurance policy before carrying out work yourself to ensure that you are covered for any mishaps.
Plumbers Summer and early autumn is a slower time of year for plumbers so you could find the rates more favourable, and you’ll also be able to get the work completed quickly. Have any pipe repairs or radiator work done now to eliminate cold spots and fix wasteful dripping taps. It’s also worth having the plumbers in just to check everything is ship shape for winter. By Jasmine Birtle, Moneymagpie.com. Moneymagpie.com has up to date information on hundreds of ways to earn a bit on the side and boost your income – and more are being added every week. There is also a wealth of information on best-buy financial products, plus heaps of articles to help you be a clever consumer and make the most of your money.

Saving SS Shieldhall The Solent Steam Packet Ltd (TSSP) is a Southampton based charity, with its main objective being to preserve the SS Shieldhall in operational condition. SS Shieldhall was built in the Clyde Shipyards and launched there 1955. She had a long and successful first career with Glasgow Corporation carrying treated sludge out to sea and, in the summer, taking passengers on pleasure trips. Bought in 1977 by Southern Water she was finally withdrawn from commercial service in 1985 but saved and purchased for £20,000 in 1988 by TSSP. She is maintained and operated entirely by volunteers and resides in Southampton’s Eastern Docks. TSSP was recently awarded a £1.4 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund South East.
TSSP MD, Graham Mackenzie said: “This grant means that in addition to her silver anniversary, we can look forward to celebrating her ‘golden anniversary’ too. However, Graham points out that the award represents just the start of saving Shieldhall: ‘It is critical that support for the ship continues through our programme involving volunteers, members, donors, events and functions. We’d be delighted to welcome anyone who would like to support and get involved in the project.’ To apply to be a volunteer please call Graham on 07751 603190, or e-mail: graham@ss-shieldhall. co.uk.

UPFRONT & PERSONAL
The People Behind Your Local Businesses Kay Murrant was feeling a little down after a family death, and a friend insisted on dragging her out to a flower arranging event at the local village hall. Little did she know at the time that this would lead to the start of a whole new way of life for Kay and her family. Watching the flower arranging demo that night inspired me. I returned home to my husband and three boys determined to make the most of my life. I convinced my husband that with our youngest son going off to school, now was the perfect time to follow my passion of flowers. I had always created floral arrangements for the family but started creating centre pieces for friends’ parties and special occasions, gradually building up my knowledge and confidence. This could easily have been enough to keep me busy (my husband certainly hoped so) but pre-family I had run my own sign writing business and I knew I could do more. I was fortunate that I had been able to be a full time mother while the boys were babies, but now I needed to do something for me.
So, I enrolled on an intensive floristry course in London, run by world renowned florist Jane Packerand so began the arduous daily commute to London. The long days proved a swift and steep learning curve for us all (my husband and sons had to master the oven, washing machine and vacuum cleaner!) The course taught me to became more aware of the importance of seasonal flowers and foliage, through to the complexity of wiring full shower bridal bouquets. Newly qualified I set up Pomp and Petals, creating a studio and website, slowly building my reputation for a bespoke design service. I feel truly privileged to provide flowers for weddings and only take on one wedding per day to ensure first class service. I then ran a successful Christmas Wreath Making workshops and now I regular run floral workshops throughout the year. I really enjoy passing on skills and sharing my love of flowers and take great satisfaction in seeing happy people take home their own floral creations, inspired to try further designs at home. The boys have all helped with
Kay Murrant
the business; I'm waiting for my eldest to pass his driving test so he can start delivering the bouquet orders. I feel so lucky to be able to follow my passion and look forward to many years of making people smile. After all who doesn't love receiving flowers, although sadly this is no longer a pleasure I experience myself: my husband says how can he possibly buy me flowers now!

HAMPSHIRE WALKS
Exton Walk Walk Distance approx 6.5 miles from the Shoe Inn Exton lies just off the A32 Droxford to West Meon road in the Meon Valley. Park in the Shoe Inn (SO32 3NT) car park located on Shoe Lane. Authorisation to park is required (01489 877526). Alternatively, drive through the village almost back to the A32 and park in the small lay-by opposite the entrance to Manor Farm. This walk is described from the Shoe Inn. On leaving the pub, turn left towards the church, follow the lane through the village for 200 yards to a ‘T’ junction and turn right. Keep straight on until you join the main A32. Cross the road onto a footpath signed “No through road”. Cross a footbridge over the Meon River. Trace this path for around 400 yards and with barns in front of you and a path joining from the left, turn left along the signed ‘South Downs Way’. Cross a section of wooden duckboards and walk along the narrow footpath between hedge and tree lined fields that narrows down to a gully and climbs steadily for some 600 yards. *Climb some wooden steps up to the disused railway track bed and turn left; walkers and cyclists can be seen heading up from the right from Wickham. Beacon Hill on your left and Old Winchester 20
Hill on your right are occasionally glimpsed through the trees. Keep going straight for approximately 1200 yards ignoring other paths and tracks until you descend onto a minor road. Cross the road and climb the opposite bank to return to the track bed. Continue along the track for a further 1800 yards until it passes under a road bridge. Access to this road is by walking further along to a footpath joining from the left for another 200 yards then turning left back on yourself up the slope to the road above. Turn left and walk along the road past Hayden Barn Cottage on the left. The road climbs steadily
uphill for some 600 yards. Approaching the top of the hill, turn right onto a gravel track signed ‘Peake Farm’ and also signed as Monarch’s Way. Follow this track towards the farm for a good 1000 yards. At a left hand bend, ignore the track going straight on into a field. Follow the track around towards the farm, passing some fields with show jumping fences and stables for the local horses. At the farm buildings, turn sharp right onto a waymarked footpath running between fields. The path emerges onto a metalled road to Peakes Farm. Turn left at the road. Walk approximately 50 yards then turn right along the side of a barn. Follow the path around the end of the barn and then along the left hand boundary of a field. Turn left through a gateway at the field boundary to join a concrete and tarmac farm track.
Follow the signed path left along the right-hand boundary of a field, which switches half way up into a field requiring the walk to continue on the left hand edge. The path climbs steadily uphill, but offers some stunning views across mid Hampshire, Old Winchester Hill and surrounding areas. At the top of the rise, turn left along the field fence line and follow the path as it turns right along the left hand side of the field. At the end of the field, turn right onto the South Downs Way footpath leading away from Old Winchester Hill. The path meanders downhill alongside field boundaries with chalky conditions underfoot and some 1500 yards of twisting decent.
HISTORICAL NOTE... In 940 AD, the village of Exton carried the name of East Seaxnatune meaning the farmstead of the East Saxons.
At the bottom of the hill, turn left into woodland. Follow the path left ignoring paths merging from the right.
The 13th century church of St Peter and Paul was heavily restored in 1847.
*Climb some wooden steps to the railway track bed. Cross straight over and descend more steps onto the footpath used on your outward journey (as shown in the dialogue marked).
In 1801, the population of Exton was 224. By 1901 it had grown slightly to 299 persons but reduced again to 230 in 2001.
Follow the footpath back to the A32, cross the road into Church Lane and retrace your steps back to your car. A downloadable pdf of the walk and en enlarged map is available online at www.discovercommunity.co.uk
The Meon Valley railway line was opened for business in June 1903 to connect Alton to Fareham and Gosport. It was one of Hampshire’s least successful railway enterprises and closed in 1955.

ADVERTISING FEATURE
It’s Where the Others Fall Down! When your fence is damaged by weather, or even just deteriorates through age, it’s expensive and troublesome to maintain or replace it. Chances are you’ll have mature plants hindering access, and digging up the ground may damage the roots of your precious shrubs. As we come into the autumn, you can be pretty much guaranteed that we are going to see some ‘lively’ weather in the coming months. According to MetOffice statistics October and January are the two gustiest months of the year in this area, closely followed by March, then November, December and February. And if there’s one part of your property that doesn’t like wind it’s your garden fence. So, if you are going to do a replacement, you need it to last. This is where a new breed of boundary fencing comes into its own.
22
Colourfence is made of high tensile steel making it extremely strong but also very lightweight. It is a very practical alternative to traditional wooden fencing as it will not warp, corrode or peel and can stand up in winds of up to 130 miles per hour. Furthermore it has a tough painted finish that lasts many times longer than wood. With a 25 year guarantee, Colourfence is virtually maintenance free except for the occasional hose down. The product has won accolades and awards including a Gold Award at the RHS Blenheim Place Show as part of a show garden, and a Silver Award in the 'Best Labour Saving Product or Service' category of The National Gardening Awards 2004. Do it once, and do it right - call Colourfence today!

Weed Attack Weed?
Ask a dictionary the definition of a weed and you’ll read that it’s ‘a plant growing in the wrong place’. Ask a gardener, and they’ll tell you that weeds are often the number one menace in their garden. Some weeds are pretty, some less so, but one thing they all have in common is that they are indeed growing where you don’t want them, and may be causing your garden plants to suffer. So if you want to wage war on those pesky weeds, and stand a chance of winning, take a look at my multi-pronged attack strategy.
by Pippa Greenwood

Off with their Heads
white flower heads.
Whatever the weed problem, it’s essential to prevent them from setting seed as most weeds are very efficient at building up their numbers by seed. So even if you don’t have the time to sort the weed out properly, make sure you cut off its head before it has a chance to even start to set seed. The old saying that ‘one year’s seed is seven years’ weed’ isn’t far from the truth.
Spaghetti roots Some weeds like couch grass, bindweed and nettles have amazingly resilient and farreaching underground stems or roots. If you’ve just taken on a new plot of land, be it a garden or an allotment, there is a good chance that it’ll be riddled with at least one of these spaghettirooted weeds. Whatever you do, don’t succumb to the temptation to use a powered cultivator or rotovator as this will chop the roots in to little bits and end up spreading and increasing the problem in the process.
Stop Stowaways When you’re next shopping for plants in your local garden centre or nursery make sure that you only bring home what you want, not those pesky weed stowaways that often lurk on the compost surface. I always do a bit of weeding before buying: especially for weeds such as the innocent looking hairy bitter-cress (Card-amine hirsuta) with their tiny rosettes or leaves and pretty little
Lawn Louts Lawn weeds such as dandelions and daisies are difficult to control as unlike the taller weeds, these rosette-forming plants won’t be harmed as you mow the lawn. One of the best methods is to tackle them with a sturdy old kitchen knife or a daisygrubber tool. It may be a slow process but will allow you to dig them out individually.

Dream Rides
Local events
Concorde Classics Car Show Concorde Classics Car show is a Charity Classic, Sports and Super car show being run in the wonderful grounds of The Concorde Club, Stoneham Lane, Eastleigh, Hampshire SO50 9HQ. All proceeds from the show go to Naomi House Children’s Hospice near Winchester. This year the show is on Sunday 8th September 2013. The show offers a huge variety of cars on display from vintage to modern supercars. Boasting a racing paddock featuring F1 cars, huge display of Ferrari’s and your chance to ride in a car of your dreams in our ‘Dream Rides’ area this is a day not to be missed. A special draw this year will be the appearance of a genuine F1 car as the star attraction. This actual F1 car is a Benetton 1993 B193b driven by Michael Schumacher and Ricardo Patrese during 1993. It’s a great day out, even if you aren’t really into cars, although with such a variety there has to be a car that appeals to everyone. Still there are trade stands, a BBQ and a live Jazz band playing throughout the day. And don’t be surprised to spot celebrities popping in to take part. Open 10am to 4pm Adults £3 Children £1 Free Parking. 02380842453. Visit the web site for more information at www.concordeclassics.co.uk. 40

31 Years Experience
You Are Not AloneThe Benefits Of Getting Legal Advice
Over the past few years, I have noticed a dramatic increase in the number of women who have agreed to their ex-husbands’ terms for divorce to keep things amicable and straight-forward, have since felt what the court ordered is unfair and then come to ask me what I can do to have it changed. However much I wish it weren’t, the answer is always the same ‘absolutely nothing’. Only in the most exceptional circumstances can a solicitor such as myself make the case for the terms of
a divorce that has been agreed by the Court to be changed in retrospect.
from a relationship as well looked after as possible. That’s it. That’s what we do.
Perhaps their former husbands had the stronger personality, perhaps it was felt they had all the power from earning and controlling the money, but so many women reach agreements to get situations over with in the short-term, and then live to regret it.
Now that Legal Aid is being withdrawn from all cases other than those involving domestic violence and child custody, I am worried that more couples will seek to ‘save money’ by entering into agreements that later turn out to be one-sided and unfair to one of the parties.
Of course it isn’t just men. Many women have been able to make demands on ex-husbands using access and custody to children as a negotiating tactic if things got difficult or nasty, and men have agreed to conditions in their divorce they later wish they hadn’t.
I can say that hiring a lawyer is an investment in your future, I can say that we are here to protect people and guide them through the process, but I suppose people only really believe me when they are in a situation that cannot be reversed and, by then, it is too late.
I would be foolish to ignore one of the main motivations of agreements of this kind between couples is to avoid involving people such as myself, but I honestly don’t know why this is the case. The fact that people would rather trust people they wish to divorce than experienced professionals whose job it is to look out for their best interests, is a fact that causes me a great deal of both confusion and frustration. Our job as solicitors is to ensure that the individuals in our care are treated fairly and walk away
If agreements are made between a couple informally, then a solicitor can get involved to negotiate a change in terms and make them official, but once the Court has made its Order, that is it. Absolutely final. Game over. I do hope that people reading this article now understand that without professional advice, the desire to keep things amicable between couples can lead to the possibility of one side being manipulated and taken advantage of. by Catherine Maxfield

Discover Hampshire’s Heritage
Every year on four days in September, buildings of every age, style and function throw open their doors. It is a oncea-year chance to discover architectural treasures and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities that bring local history and culture to life.
So much to see and do Free of charge and right on your doorstep, Heritage Open Days is an event for everyone, whatever their background, age and ability. From castles to city halls, tunnels to tower tops, police cells to private homes, workshops to woodland walks, the variety of places and ways to discover them are endless.
Opening doors, eyes and minds Heritage Open Days celebrates what makes local communities and neighbourhoods special. By stimulating curiosity and discovery, the event connects people with their local places and helps foster a sense of belonging and pride. 64
Roots After a first pilot in Gosport proved a success, the now defunct Civic Trust established Heritage Open Days in 1994 as England’s contribution to the European Heritage Days. Starting out with some 700 sites, Heritage Open Days has since developed into Britain’s largest and most popular grassroots heritage event, with participation more than doubling during the first decade of the millennium. This year the focus is on the people who create history – from lords of the manor to shopkeepers, factory owners, merchants and monarchs. What’s great about Heritage Open Days is that it celebrates everyone equally, from shepherds to millionaires, and the
contributions they have made to our heritage landscape.
Local Events There is so much happening for Heritage Open Days that it’s impossible to list everything here. There is a particularly full program of events in Gosport which you can see at www. gosportheritage.co.uk. Details of all events both locally and further afield can be found on www.heritageopendays. org.uk. Here’s a selection of a few that we think are particularly interesting. Bursledon Brickworks Industrial Museum Swanwick Lane, SO31 7HB Come along and see the last remaining steam driven brickworks in the country. http://tinycc/bursledonbrickworks. 12th September only.
“Heritage Open Days is the perfect way to round off a scorching summer in England,” says Loyd Grossman, Patron of Heritage Open Days. “Everyone loves taking a peek behind closed doors and Heritage Open Days offers the chance to discover stories from the past in every city, town and village around the country.”
St Alban’s Church Open Day & 8th Anniversary Exhibition Tulip Road, SO16 3BB Church open for viewing. Talks and tours. Open tower climbing the tower at one’s own risk! All original features retained, including relics from medieval priory. Church hosts one of the largest and oldest Grand Organs in Hampshire, parts of which date from 1750 and were played by Handel. A picture quiz for families and toys on site. Refreshments available. 14th September only The Town Hall A fantastic chance to visit the Civic Wing of Gosport Town Hall to view items, which are not usually visible to the public. These include artifacts such as beautiful silverware, magnificent paintings and the other unusual and historic gifts. 12th September, book 023 9252 2944 or email tickets@ gosportheritage.co.uk. Below Victory’s Water Line Join one of HMS Victory’s tour guides for a unique chance to go below the water line. Around Britain 5 Famous Trees 1. Boscobel, Shropshire Boscobel House in Shropshire was once home to The Royal Oak, the tree in which Charles II hid whilst fleeing from the Roundheads after the Battle of Worcester in 1651. The original tree was destroyed in the 18th century, but one of its descendants, now 300 years old, stands in its place. 2. Fortingall, Perthshire A yew tree in the Perthshire village of Fortingall is almost certainly the oldest tree in Europe, with estimates of its age reaching a staggering 5,000 years old – it would already have been 1,000 years old when the Pyramids were built. 3. Hatfield, Hertfordshire On 17 November 1558, Elizabeth Tudor was sat beneath an oak tree in the gardens of what is now Hatfield House when she received news that her sister Mary had died, and that she was now Queen of England. The tree, now known as the Queen Elizabeth Oak, is found on the Hatfield coat of arms. 4. Runnymede, Berkshire King John signed the Magna Carta beneath the Ankerwyke Yew in Runnymede, Berkshire, in 1215. It is also thought that the tree served as a meeting place for Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn in the 1530s. 5. Southwell, Nottinghamshire The first Bramley apple was grown in Southwell in Nottinghamshire from a seed planted by MaryAnn Brailsford in 1809. The apple takes its name from Matthew Bramley, a local merchant who bought the garden containing the tree in 1846. © Taken from The British Isles: A Trivia Gazetteer by Paul Anthony Jones, out now.

Want to get fit without joining a gym, make new friends, get some fresh air, or try something new? The local Breeze Rides are an ideal start for women and mums who are looking to get back on a bike, as a confidence booster, and the perfect way to introduce an active lifestyle into your routine. The rides are leisurely introductory rides, using mainly cycle paths and quiet lanes, aimed to get ladies back on their bikes again, (whether it's months or years since you've ridden a bike), in a supportive atmosphere. The routes are gentle, with few hills, and some of us walk up these! The rides take between an hour and an hour and a half. The aim is to have a social outing and make new friends locally. A rewarding treat of coffee and cake in a cafe is always part of the fun. Visit www.breezebikerides.com for more information. The local volunteer leader (Chandlers Ford and surrounds) is Mary on 02380 252003 who’ll be happy to answer any questions.

10th Anniversary of Chandlers Ford Railway Station reopening – 13 October 2013 It doesn’t seem that long ago since trains were reintroduced to Chandlers Ford, but in fact this October marks 10 years since the town’s station reopened. In this period the number of people using Chandlers Ford Railway Station has steadily increased with many seeing the train service as a better way of travelling into Romsey, Eastleigh and Southampton, as well as further afield. The free car park at the station acts as a great incentive for using the trains, as do the regular and reliable services and the relatively cheap fares, which compare favourably with car travel and parking costs. The addition in recent years of a second hand book service, a station coffee stall and leisure walks and cycle rides has 72
also been greatly welcomed. In order to celebrate the success of Chandlers Ford railway station, the Three Rivers Community Rail Partnership will be holding a 10th anniversary celebration event on Sunday 13 October 2013 between 1300 and 1600 at the station. The event will include school art competitions, children’s entertainment, quizzes, local nature walks and cycle rides, cycle maintenance workshops and much more. The Partnership’s volunteers, who have helped keep the station clean and tidy over the past few years, would also like to encourage the local community to get involved in the celebrations by: • Providing craft, art or food stalls on the day to demonstrate Chandlers Ford’s local talents • Providing any memories or
photographs of the old or new Chandlers Ford Station for a public exhibition in the booking office • In the spirit of the Great British Bake Off, coming up with a new Chandlers Ford cake, which incorporates local history, ingredients or a unique Chandlers Ford character. • Helping out with the planning or running of the event on the day. If you have any other ideas we could utilise as part of this celebration or if you would like to get involved with this event in other ways please contact Mark Miller, Three Rivers Community Rail Partnership Officer on 07900 103296 or markmiller10@tiscali.co.uk or www.facebook.com/ threeriversrail We look forward to seeing you there.

Past projects have included the purchase of IT equipment and currently we are providing financial assistance with the building of a Sensory Garden. Our work is extremely worthwhile and much appreciated by those who rely on the centre for companionship and activities in a caring environment. The current Honorary Secretary and Treasurer is retiring next March after a long and most distinguished stint. The Committee is looking either for two people, one to be Secretary and one to be Treasurer, or for one person to fulfil both roles. The work might well suit people recently retired and not yet fully committed to new activities, or to someone in part-time work. If you would like to know more about these opportunities, do please get in touch with Mr Derric Webster on 02380261949. Hugh Benham, Chair of Friends of HEXAGON
